- 1:18Jenny Johnson runs Franklin Templeton, which manages about
- 1:22$1.7 trillion. She compared the current AI
- 1:27stock frenzy to the early days of the California Gold rush.
- 1:31She said she doesn't care if it's a bubble.
- 1:33That stopped me completely cold. This week at Abu Dhabi Finance
- 1:38Week, some of the most powerful people in global finance
- 1:41gathered to talk about AI, and they do not agree on what's
- 1:44coming. Is AI the greatest technological
- 1:48shift of our lifetime? Or is it a disruption that could
- 1:51hurt the companies that are betting on it, like Google?
- 1:53Johnson was not the only executive making bold statements
- 1:56in Abu Dhabi. Steven Schwartzman from
- 2:00Blackstone talked about doubling the electricity grid.
- 2:03Chris Hohn, who runs a $60 billion hedge fund, said the
- 2:08uncertainty is off the charts. We're going to walk through what
- 2:12each of these investors actually said, where they see the risks
- 2:16and what the infrastructure plays look like right now, and
- 2:20we'll get right into that after the short break.
- 2:24Now, the world's largest money manager spent this week in Abu
- 2:26Dhabi debating whether AI stocks are worth their prices.
- 2:30Alphabet, Meta and Oracle have all rushed to debt markets in
- 2:34recent months to fund their AI. That spending spree is adding to
- 2:39unease about possible AI bubble. The executives at this
- 2:42conference had strong opinions and they split into mainly 2
- 2:45camps. Jenny Johnson landed firmly in
- 2:48the believer camp. She dismissed concerns about
- 2:51high valuations to the scale of what's happening.
- 2:53Her argument was simple. Only about 7 stocks are driving
- 2:57the AI trade right now, but the tech itself could be one of the
- 3:01greatest shifts of our generation.
- 3:04Complaining about expensive valuations, he said, is like
- 3:07complaining that picks and shovels got expensive during the
- 3:09gold rush and misses the point. Franklin Templeton manages $1.7
- 3:14trillion, so her read on this carries a lot of weight.
- 3:18She also added that we have not begun to see the real impact of
- 3:22AI yet. It will take years before the
- 3:24tech shows up meaningfully in company earnings.
- 3:27Policy makers and economists are still figuring out how AI
- 3:30effects productivity and labor markets.
- 3:34And here's the key point. Johnson is not saying buy
- 3:37everything. She's saying the bubble question
- 3:39is the wrong question. The right question is whether
- 3:42the underlying technology will matter, and she thinks it will.
- 3:46Now Steven Schwartzman runs Blackstone, a trillion dollar
- 3:50alternative asset manager. He focused on infrastructure.
- 3:54AI now touches almost every part of economic activity, he said,
- 3:58and is creating massive capital expenditure demands.
- 4:01The electricity piece is the one that got my attention.
- 4:05Swartzman said the country would have to theoretically double the
- 4:08size of the electricity grid to support all of the AI.
- 4:12That's not a small thing that's going to cost trillions of
- 4:14dollars. To create that much electricity,
- 4:17a lot of other things have to happen across society.
- 4:20New power plants, new transmission lines, new
- 4:22regulatory approvals. And the AI build out is not just
- 4:26a software story. It's about energy now.
- 4:31Keep going with me here. Not everyone at the conference
- 4:34was bullish about this. Chris Hoen runs TCIA $60 billion
- 4:38hedge fund, and he offered a different view.
- 4:41Hoen said certain AI companies and investments do not make any
- 4:45sense at this stage. He didn't name any names, but
- 4:48his reasoning was very clear. AI will be a force of
- 4:52disruption, and disruption is not always a positive for the
- 4:54companies in its path, said Forces of disruption are
- 4:57increasing and the best universe of investments is limiting and
- 5:02shrinking. His most striking line was about
- 5:04risk. Uncertainty and risk factors, he
- 5:07said, are off the charts. That puts pressure on everyone
- 5:10trying to pick winners in this space.
- 5:14So what do we know? Right now?
- 5:16The divide is not about whether AI matters.
- 5:18Everyone agrees that it does matter.
- 5:21The divide is about timing evaluations.
- 5:23Johnson says the tech is so significant that expensive
- 5:26prices are beside the point to spend money on it.
- 5:29Hohen says prices have disconnected from reality, and
- 5:32the disruption could hurt more than it helps.
- 5:34Both manage enormous sums of money.
- 5:37Both are looking at the same data now.
- 5:41Raj Agrawal runs the real assets division of KKR, which manages
- 5:46$723 billion. He offered a middle path.
- 5:50The best AI investment, he said, is in data centers.
- 5:53That's the infrastructure layer, the physical buildings that
- 5:56house the servers. But he added a warning.
- 5:59You have to be cautious about paying big multiples that
- 6:01require growth in a specific period to get your capital back.
- 6:05That echoes what Oracle is experiencing.
- 6:08The company is investing so heavily in AI data centers.
- 6:11That is free. Cash flow will be negative for
- 6:14years, according to recent data. Hold out of that detail,
- 6:19Mubadala. The Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth
- 6:21fund, said its approach to this is to stick to investment
- 6:25principles and not chase aggressive growth.
- 6:29That's a different posture than some of the American tech giants
- 6:31are taking. And, you know, there's a Abu
- 6:37Dhabi Investment Council as well, another sovereign wealth
- 6:40fund they're still buying. They said that they like AI and
- 6:44biotech because they have been big winners.
- 6:46They they expect them to keep winning.
- 6:49The industry, they said, is in the middle of its journey.
- 6:53If you believe AI is in the middle of its growth curve,
- 6:55current prices might be justified.
- 6:58If you believe it's closer to the peak, the math changes a
- 7:01lot. Now.
- 7:03The conference in Abu Dhabi service to real tension.
- 7:05The people managing the world's largest pools of capital see AI
- 7:09as transformational. You also see valuations that
- 7:12make them very nervous. The optimists are betting on
- 7:16decades of growth. The skeptics are watching
- 7:19companies borrow heavily and burned through their cash
- 7:22reserves. Now the infrastructure investors
- 7:24are looking for the safer way in buying the data centers and the
- 7:28power plants instead of the actual AI models.
- 7:32None of these views are wrong right now.
- 7:34They just reflect different time horizons in different tolerances
- 7:38for risk. Hey, thank you so much for
- 7:40listening today. I really do appreciate your
- 7:43support. If you could take a second and
