- 0:00We're back with Sally Watkins now from the folks in rowing club Sally, Now,
- 0:03how was your Gata day? Big day on Sunday? How did it
- 0:06go? We had a very successful regatta this year. The weather wasn't too
- 0:12kind to us with regards to the rain that we did have a few showers
- 0:17but mainly seavers fairly flat all day, wasn't too hot, which would have
- 0:22been really difficult to row several races with the temperature high, and our club
- 0:28won quite a few races, so it was a very successful day. So
- 0:33how many clubs come along? We've got the four from kent hern Bay dealed
- 0:38over and then of course Folkston. Then we move into Sussex. We had
- 0:42bex Hill, Hastings, we had Shoreham, Worthing and Eastbourne and then I
- 0:50don't think this week we had south Sea I remember seeing. So that's pretty
- 0:53I mean at the beach down there, it isn't like huge, is it,
- 0:56you know? And it must have been pretty cramped. Was it lucky
- 1:00that we had quite a flat flattened beach this year? We'd got the guys
- 1:04with the you know shingle moving to flatten it off and we fitted everybody in
- 1:14so the weather was kind of again. So you made the decision. When
- 1:17did you make the decision? Captain made decision on Saturday early afternoon because it
- 1:23was set to be northerly and light winds. There was no chance of it
- 1:26moving around strong south. So you have to keep in close touch with all
- 1:32these other clubs. They're kind of the secretaries or whatever back down the coast.
- 1:36They're all waiting to see an update, are they. Once upon a
- 1:40time people used to have to ring each club to advice, and the umpires
- 1:46coming from different clubs to advise them. Mithagat was on or off. Now
- 1:51there's obviously several WhatsApp chats and captain's chats on chat, so you only had
- 1:56to put and also Facebook all out there. Okay, so you said you
- 2:01had some good results, and so tell us about your club members. How
- 2:05did they do on Sunday in the year. We've got a really good men's
- 2:09junior crew. They had previously a few of them got different combination. This
- 2:15year. They have won the Open. Last year at Folks and Champs they
- 2:21won the Open men's Junior force and two of them plus a youngster came along
- 2:28who's previously a novice up up to this Sunday and another lad we sort of
- 2:34change over. There's about six that jump in and out to make the four.
- 2:38They hadn't won. They won one at the first regatta, but unfortunately
- 2:44the boy had popped under the boat, which is illegal, so they were
- 2:46disqualified. Then they lost a couple, then they were in the lead when
- 2:52the boat got swamped by Way at bex Hill, and after that the regatta
- 2:55was canceled, but that was taken that they didn't qualify as so this time
- 3:01they won easily. So that was our first men's junior four win. Two
- 3:06of them Billy and Sam. They've won five men's junior pairs now so if
- 3:13Hastings hadn't been canceled, we hope they would have won the car A Championship
- 3:16on Sunday, but we hope with Dover on this week they will win that
- 3:21championship. Then Maddie Y Brown who is a Folks and Hive girl. She
- 3:29comes back every year for a birthday and for folks on Agata. She's based
- 3:31in Slovenia and she was a novice and she worked a way up through Folkston
- 3:36Club. So she won the junist girls. Having won last year the novice
- 3:43ladies' gulls. She's now a junior and she won on Sunday, and I
- 3:47think they've got a good entry. They got second in the no so yeah,
- 3:55she won her second and she was rowing with another senior, Sarah,
- 4:00and they got third. In the senior women's pairs, we had senior women
- 4:06were fourth, the women's masters were third, the Masters fifty, the Open
- 4:12Masters where we got men and women in the same boat, they were third,
- 4:15the Open Masters forty fourth. We had novice men go out crew,
- 4:23which it was their first for two of them. It's their first ever Regetta
- 4:28and they rode an amazing race and they were fourth and they were up there,
- 4:30so we have high hopes for them. The novice women, we've had
- 4:34two that have been rowing novice for a couple of years and we had two
- 4:40new women that just come along this year and they finished really well. That
- 4:44was their first race. We've got junior women crew with two novices. They
- 4:49did really well, a few issues, but they came sixth. Sam from
- 4:54the women junior boat, he went up last year to junior skulls and he
- 4:59came fourth. A lot of people actually had five races on the day,
- 5:03so a very busy dayn't work. And at the end of the day we
- 5:08had a mixed quad, so the big boats get rigged up eight oars and
- 5:15we had ten in the race and we had two entries and we did really
- 5:18well with the first so excellently. Do you find that there are if you
- 5:24like, catchment areas and clubs that are kind of you know, strong livery
- 5:29year when they come over to sid to see you. There are some clubs
- 5:31out there that they find the rowers every year. Some stay the durations,
- 5:35some have been rowing for twenty thirty years. I think, you know,
- 5:40we've got people in the boats are like seventy but they've got the experience.
- 5:44Deal is a very strong club, but they're seniors. Were at Henley Henry
- 5:47Trials. Shoreham's are very good club. They've got the river aided to row
- 5:51in the winter when it's rough, so they're very fortunate and they've got unis
- 5:56around them. So there's definitely clubs out there that have got an advantage over
- 6:00us. Yeah, for training, so you go back indoors on the urgos.
- 6:06Okay, So the it sounds like the had a fantastic day and did
- 6:10the Red Arrows happen to get in the way just as we had prize giving.
- 6:14We were rushing prize giving, having had such a long program to get
- 6:17in because of the football starting at five. But just as prize giving happened,
- 6:21the Red Arrows went over saying games that must have been a great organized
- 6:26especially for the brigatta. Of course you took the credit for that. Note
- 6:30Yeah, yeah, kid, right, So let's get back to the club
- 6:34in question. Now, how's it going generally down the club? How's your
- 6:39membership? And how can people water training nights? How can people get in
- 6:42touch those that wish to row? They can come down on a Sunday morning.
- 6:47This Sunday all most of us are going to be ecked over, hopefully,
- 6:50but Wednesday nights from six go online all the instructions there. We've got
- 6:57very good website focused on rowing club socially. People don't have to row,
- 7:00or they can just socially row. Don't have to compete this, No,
- 7:05no, we're not pushing people into a voat. It's a thriving club.
- 7:11We had a waiting list for a social members and that and we've had open
- 7:14days for rowing and we've had some good you know, feedback and some good
- 7:17rowers coming along this year. Right, So how was the after party and
- 7:23the the after party a lot of drinking and the football and England you know,
- 7:29got through and then there was music laid on, so dancing partying.
- 7:32It was a very good day. So a few sick notes going in Monday,
- 7:35I should think, Sally, is anything else you want to add before
- 7:41we go. We did have the opportunity this year of applying to become a
- 7:47gb Coastal Sculling Academy and effectively we have got the go ahead, so you
- 7:55know that's going to be on the website and we had the opportunity of people
- 7:58coming. We've got the fast link from London. Anyone that wants to train
- 8:01for the coastal scarling, which is a different type obviously to people that are
- 8:05rowing on the river or generally different type of boats, a stronger boat with
- 8:11you know the water can flow out easily, no sinking in those hopefully,
- 8:16and it is going to become part of the Olympics in four years time.
- 8:18Wow, So things are looking good down at the club then aren't they.
- 8:22Yeah, Oh, Suny, thanks for giving up your time today and well
- 8:24it's just been an interesting chat and I love hearing this because it's a sport
- 8:28I don't know much about, and although I've been down there on regatta days
- 8:33and it just looks like absolute chaos, I'm sure there's some order about it.
- 8:39Yeah, of course. Anyways, so thank you once again, Sally.
- 8:41Let's hope the rest of the regatta season is a success. Thank you,
- 8:45Thank you, Kevin,
