- 1:00Guys, let's get started. I wanted to do a video.
- 1:02This is Monica. A shorter video I think like let
- 1:05me grab some water guys. This is more like a shorter
- 1:07video than I normally do. I wanted to just do a video on
- 1:10the the autism meaning because we we hear the term.
- 1:14We hear the words autism. Yeah.
- 1:15Yeah. OK, OK.
- 1:16But then we we never really take the time to go, OK what does
- 1:18autism mean? Like what what is the meaning.
- 1:21And. And I just thought I'd go over a
- 1:24little bit about what autism is. And so anybody who's watching
- 1:27this for research purposes, this may be absolutely perfect for
- 1:29you guys. But anybody who's watching us,
- 1:31because you watch every video I put up, I love you from the
- 1:33bottom of my heart, Thank you so much for supporting me.
- 1:36You're the real MVP. So what is the meaning of
- 1:39autism, right? Or what is autism?
- 1:41What is the, what is the autism meaning?
- 1:44So we should really start at the beginning, right?
- 1:47So autism is a neurodevelopmental condition
- 1:50that impacts the lives of people who are impacted by a condition.
- 1:55It's characterized by the inability to fully function in a
- 2:00social environment through communication and sensory
- 2:05triggered issues. So it's kind of like there's a
- 2:07triad of impairment, which is social issues, communication
- 2:09issues, social issues, communication issues and living
- 2:13in with functions of executive functions, living in the reality
- 2:16of functions, executive functions.
- 2:18So it impacts a lot of areas of the world because it's
- 2:21neurological. It impacts your ability to
- 2:23communicate with the world around you, basically.
- 2:25That's that's the premise of it, right?
- 2:27And autism currently impacts the lives of one in 100 people here
- 2:30in the United Kingdom and even more so one in 60 people in the
- 2:33United States, which is quite a high number.
- 2:35And it seems to actually be on the rise.
- 2:37There's probably a lot more people, but just who are
- 2:39undiagnosed for one reason or another.
- 2:42But the interesting thing about autism is, like I said at the
- 2:44beginning, it's a neurological developmental condition.
- 2:46It's not a mental health disorder because people think
- 2:50that autism and mental health disorder, when actually it's
- 2:52neurological, even though it is taken care of by mental health
- 2:54teams, It's not mental health, it's neurological, which is
- 2:59fascinating, Which also means that there's no cure for autism
- 3:02and we don't know the cause of it, which is also fascinating.
- 3:05So moving on from that, autism comes from a Greek word.
- 3:09So the word autism comes from Greek word called autos, which
- 3:13is basically alone or the South or you know, alone.
- 3:17Basically the word and autistic people that seem to be by
- 3:20themselves a lot, you know, so neurotypical people or people
- 3:24who are not autistic seem to be quite social although they'll
- 3:27gravitate towards social groups and stuff.
- 3:29But people who are on the autism spectrum will gravitate to being
- 3:31on their own, which is that self aloneness and which is again the
- 3:35auto for autism. But the name actually used to be
- 3:39called early Infantile Autism and Kennel Autism because back
- 3:43in the 1940s which is when the condition was actually started
- 3:47to be studied. So it wasn't actually until
- 3:491940s the condition wasn't actually studied properly and it
- 3:53was Leo Kenner and Hans Asperger who started studying this.
- 3:56But it wasn't until the late 80s, early 90s they actually
- 3:59started using it as a diagnostic criteria for people with these
- 4:03kind of impairments in their life.
- 4:05Now this is all really fascinating and the two main
- 4:07players, like I said in this was Leo Kenner and Hans Asperger.
- 4:11Now Leo Kenner dubbed the the term early infantile autism, but
- 4:17then obviously had to drop the early infantile because they
- 4:19realized that autism was like this lifelong thing that impacts
- 4:21everybody. So it can just be for children.
- 4:23And then took lifelong and then it became autism.
- 4:25But then it also was nicknamed Kanner syndrome.
- 4:27And also in the 80s and 90s after Hans Asperger passed away,
- 4:31we saw his body of research then uses diagnostic criteria and
- 4:35then called people in in that bracket Asperger's syndrome
- 4:39which is very very interesting. I found that just absolutely
- 4:41fascinating. So that is typically the the
- 4:45kind of the, the meaning behind autism and and the kind of where
- 4:47it came from. Not if you think that you have
- 4:49anything to add that would help this video in the comment
- 4:52section down below to help the community pop it down there.
- 4:54I read every single comment and if you like this video please
- 4:57give a thumbs up, share it if you think that would help and
- 4:59I'll see you in the next one. Guys.
- 5:01Peace.
