- 0:00Speaker 1: Lori Valo day Bell is a former beauty contestant.
- 0:05Speaker 2: She lost her mind.
- 0:07Speaker 3: She thinks she's a resurrected being in a god.
- 0:11Speaker 4: Anybody you spoke to who knew Laurie back then said
- 0:14that she was like the mother.
- 0:16Speaker 5: Of the year.
- 0:17Speaker 6: So what makes her a danger to herself? And two
- 0:19others threatened they murdered me, kill me.
- 0:22Speaker 7: We're gathering together as saints, as brothers and sisters and
- 0:26preparing for the second Coming of Christ.
- 0:29Speaker 5: She threatened to murder you.
- 0:31Speaker 8: Yes.
- 0:31Speaker 6: Six months later, Valo was shot and killed Lise.
- 0:34Speaker 9: They found a man with gunshot wound who was later
- 0:37pronounced dead.
- 0:38Speaker 7: The first death that kicked off this multi state mystery.
- 0:41Speaker 10: Inside is Lorie Valo's husband dead on the living room floor.
- 0:45Speaker 5: What happened today? How did they get to.
- 0:48Speaker 2: She said, you're not Charles. I don't know who you
- 0:50are what you did with Charles, But I can murder
- 0:52you now with my powers.
- 0:54Speaker 5: So how does she pose a threat to your children?
- 0:57Speaker 6: Laurie? Where are your kids? They've been missing for four months.
- 1:01Speaker 10: Do you have nothing to say now?
- 1:03Speaker 6: Laurie da Bell appears to be somebody else.
- 1:06Speaker 1: She has two missing children. JJ Vallo, Tylee Ryan.
- 1:10Speaker 2: I don't know what she's going to do with them.
- 1:11I don't know she's going to flee with them.
- 1:13Speaker 5: She's going to hurt him, all right? This house or
- 1:15the one with the flashing lights out there?
- 1:18Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 1:19Speaker 3: Car drolled one? Well care?
- 1:27Speaker 11: Oh my god.
- 1:34Speaker 1: It all started on January thirty first, twenty nineteen, when
- 1:38Charles Vallow was still alive and had just returned from
- 1:41a business trip to find he was locked out of
- 1:43his own house with no sign of his wife Laurie
- 1:47or his kids JJ and Tylee. His car had also
- 1:50gone missing, and a large sum of cash had been
- 1:52withdrawn from his bank account. So when an effort to
- 1:54get some answers, he called nine to one one.
- 1:57Speaker 5: So what's going on tonight?
- 1:59Speaker 2: I can't get touched the bots? About kids?
- 2:01Speaker 5: How old are your kids?
- 2:02Speaker 3: Six and a half and sixteen? She lost her mind?
- 2:08Speaker 2: Had the house to say it.
- 2:09Speaker 3: She thinks she's a resurrected being in a god and
- 2:13remember one hundred and forty four thousand.
- 2:15Speaker 2: She's come to Jesus is coming next year.
- 2:17Speaker 6: So what makes her a danger to herself? And two
- 2:19others threatened the murder me, kill me. She's threatened to
- 2:22murder you yes, she said, you're not Charles.
- 2:25Speaker 3: I don't know who you are what you did with Charles,
- 2:27but I can murder you now with my powers.
- 2:29Speaker 5: Is this just all recent or has it been going on?
- 2:32Speaker 2: Been going about four or five years. It's gotten really
- 2:34really bad lately. She goes at a temple every day
- 2:36and speaks with Marona and Jesus Christ. The last couple
- 2:39of dations. I'm not Charles. You're not Charles, your Nick Schneider.
- 2:44Speaker 1: According to Laurie, Nick Schneider is an evil spirit who
- 2:47has possessed Charles's body, and he believed these threats against
- 2:51his life were very real. In the last few years,
- 2:54she had become obsessed with the teachings of a man
- 2:57named Chad Dabell, a man well known for right dogmatically
- 3:01and teaching his thoughts about the end of days, the
- 3:03second Coming of Christ, and other more unique concepts like
- 3:07evil spirits and zombies. Both Chad and Laurie were also
- 3:11members of Preparing a People, a cult who were preparing
- 3:14for the second Coming of Jesus Christ and the end
- 3:17of the world as we know it. Laurie also believed
- 3:20she was a member of the one hundred and forty
- 3:22four thousand, a group of high priests who will administer
- 3:25the everlasting Gospel to the world in its last days.
- 3:29She also believed that every human was on a scale
- 3:32between light and dark, and the darker one's spirit was,
- 3:35the more dangerous they were to her and her beliefs.
- 3:39Laurie had actually become so involved in this new religious
- 3:42belief that Charles had become concerned not only for himself,
- 3:46but his two children as well.
- 3:48Speaker 2: She said to me, Charles's stuff is gone. Charles stuff
- 3:51is gone.
- 3:52Speaker 5: And how long you've been trying to get in touch
- 3:54with the kids. So how does she pose a threat
- 3:57to your children.
- 3:58Speaker 2: I don't know what she's going to do with them.
- 4:00She's going to flee with them.
- 4:01Speaker 3: She's going to hurt them. And today she said, come
- 4:03take the kids. I don't care what happens to me.
- 4:05I just want to see my boys, okay. And she's
- 4:07got a pickup order.
- 4:08Speaker 1: A pickup order can be obtained after one parent fails
- 4:11to deliver a child to another parent. As Charles has
- 4:14not heard from his kids in days, he felt he
- 4:16had no choice but to take action. The cops then
- 4:19helped Charles get back in the house, but it was
- 4:21too late, as Laurie and the kids were gone. The
- 4:24very next morning, Charles called nine one one again, this
- 4:28time directing them to a hotel in Gilbert, Arizona, where
- 4:31he believed Laurie was hiding out with JJ and ty Lee.
- 4:34This time, though, Charles had managed to obtain an emergency
- 4:37mental health petition, a note that would require Laurie to
- 4:40check into a mental health institution and undergo assessment.
- 4:44Speaker 6: What's going on?
- 4:45Speaker 3: Why is she hear you?
- 4:46Speaker 12: I hear?
- 4:47Speaker 2: Are you staying here?
- 4:48Speaker 5: With her.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Long stories? She's had kind of a blood to me
- 4:53on upcount to support as much as I could, But
- 4:55it's gotten really, really bad.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Right, She's had it right, she says, I'm Nick Snyder.
- 5:01A paper over Charles's body and Charles had been killed.
- 5:04I'm going to kill you. You're murdered today or to.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Buy Charles had already tried to find Laurie earlier that
- 5:10morning by turning up at JJ's school, but despite seeing
- 5:13her car in the parking lot, there was no sign
- 5:15of her at all. However, she had left her purse
- 5:18in the car, so Charles took it in hopes that
- 5:20it would stop her from getting away. This works perfectly
- 5:23as she walked into the Gilbert police station later this
- 5:26same morning to report her missing purse. But her version
- 5:30of events was much different.
- 5:32Speaker 13: So this morning, when I took my son to school,
- 5:34but she was waiting somewhere and like stole my verse
- 5:37out of her, my hope her So my phone and
- 5:39my wallet, my money and my everything was in there.
- 5:42Speaker 5: What is it like that motivates him doing this kind
- 5:46of stuff? It did?
- 5:47Speaker 1: He say?
- 5:47Speaker 10: One?
- 5:47Speaker 13: I caught him cheating and.
- 5:49Speaker 8: I had evidence, and I told him about it.
- 5:51Speaker 7: And he travels a lot for.
- 5:52Speaker 13: Business, so I told him that it told him not
- 5:55to come home and that his stuff would be gone,
- 5:57and that his.
- 5:57Speaker 7: Car would be gone.
- 5:58Speaker 2: And as.
- 6:01Speaker 1: She claimed that she'd caught Charles having an affair and
- 6:04told him not to come home, locking him out of
- 6:07the house and taking his car, the first of many
- 6:10carefully fabricated lies that would not only ruin Charles's life
- 6:14but end it. Police informed Charles that he can't steal
- 6:17Laurie's property, no matter what the motive. A deal was
- 6:21then formed between them, saying that if Charles returned her purse,
- 6:24then the police would immediately follow up with the mental
- 6:26health petition, but Eventually, it went through and Laurie underwent
- 6:30her assessment. However, in two hours, Laurie was released with
- 6:33the doctors finding no issues at all. This decision sentenced
- 6:37Charles to death and put his kids lives in jeopardy.
- 6:41Charles filed for divorce, and six months later, his body
- 6:45was found at Laurie's house with two gunshot wounds across
- 6:48his body. The fate of his children was now in
- 6:52the hands of their delusional and dangerous mother.
- 6:57Speaker 5: Apparent gunshot. He's right here in the living room.
- 7:02Speaker 10: Firearm is going to be in the front door, in
- 7:04the front bedroom, laying on the ground next to a case.
- 7:06Speaker 5: You want to stay here?
- 7:07Speaker 1: I get this guy's When Charles's body was found, An
- 7:10investigation determines the shooter to be Alex Cox, a man
- 7:14who just so happened to be the brother of Lori Valo.
- 7:17Speaker 2: What's going on?
- 7:18Speaker 14: What happened?
- 7:18Speaker 5: He came with me with a bat. Was he living
- 7:21here or visiting? He came to pick up the sun? Okay,
- 7:24is the sun inside?
- 7:25Speaker 2: No?
- 7:26Speaker 5: My sister took him to school, okay.
- 7:27Speaker 10: So it was just you at the house, yes, and
- 7:29he came How long? What time did he come to
- 7:31pick up, pick up the Sun. Okay, so you know
- 7:36who he is?
- 7:37Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, okay, No, I.
- 7:39Speaker 14: Think they were talking earlier than she left, and then
- 7:42he got into him with me, like, what what do
- 7:45you mean?
- 7:46Speaker 1: Alex seems very vague in his answers and says he
- 7:49can't remember exactly what happened other than the pair simply
- 7:53got into a fight. But those kinds of answers aren't
- 7:56going to satisfy the cops, especially when there's a dead
- 7:59man involved.
- 8:00Speaker 14: So you both so you get in an argument.
- 8:02Speaker 5: What is it over? All's over my sister?
- 8:04Speaker 14: He was, he was getting physical with her, and so
- 8:06my niece came out with her bat, and then he
- 8:08took the bat away.
- 8:09Speaker 10: From what I thought, you said your niece left. She
- 8:11did before, So before before your your sister and your
- 8:15niece left. At some point, your sister and her husband
- 8:19are arguing verbal argument, and then your niece pulls out
- 8:23a bat.
- 8:24Speaker 5: He was getting closed and she came out to defend.
- 8:27Speaker 3: My sister, your niece, yes, okay, and then she poked
- 8:31at him and he took it away, okay.
- 8:34Speaker 6: And then he's he's coming back and me and you
- 8:36stick out the bat and.
- 8:37Speaker 2: What are you doing, and where are you at it?
- 8:39Speaker 5: Where are you both living? And then I turned around
- 8:43and he hit me in the back of the head
- 8:44of the bat. I went to my room and got
- 8:46my gun.
- 8:47Speaker 10: So you went to your room, meaning you're staying Yeah, okay,
- 8:51you brought your brought a gun with you.
- 8:53Speaker 5: Do you always bring a gun? Okay?
- 8:55Speaker 10: Why did you stay just in your bedroom closing the door?
- 8:57Speaker 5: Is that something you didn't think about it or you
- 8:59didn't heard him?
- 9:00Speaker 1: This final statement should actually have torn down Alex's entire argument,
- 9:05as it technically proves this wasn't self defense at all.
- 9:08When Alex went to his room to grab his gun,
- 9:10he should have been able to usher his family inside,
- 9:13close the door, and stand his ground from there. Instead,
- 9:16he grabbed his gun and without a second thought, ran
- 9:19straight up to Charles and shot him. But at this
- 9:22point there were still so many looming questions the cops
- 9:26decided to bring in all parties back for an interrogation
- 9:29to try and get to the bottom of it all
- 9:31and figure out exactly what happened to Charles.
- 9:34Speaker 10: Start when you think.
- 9:35Speaker 15: It makes a little sense, okay, So so we moved
- 9:41into this housetreet so because he offered to get me
- 9:44out here where all my family is.
- 9:45Speaker 7: When we're in Houston. We had decided to separate or whatever.
- 9:49So he's like, long, pay for house for you and
- 9:52for JJ and whatever, because he's all about Jjay.
- 9:54Speaker 6: He's never felt til.
- 9:57Speaker 7: Because we adopted him together. He says, greating you we
- 10:00adopted him as Okay, he came away first, moved in
- 10:03and brought me stuff from Houston like a U haul
- 10:06and then he hasn't been back. But it's all these
- 10:08threats on my phone all the time, you know.
- 10:11Speaker 15: Like whatever, all these things.
- 10:13Speaker 7: And then he told me what kind of throats just
- 10:16he's alling mad me right, and he doesn't want a divorce,
- 10:20So I don't like him and I don't want to
- 10:21do him. So that's just how it is. So we
- 10:24married for fourteen years and for fourteen years and him
- 10:27being horrible to her, like he's in huge freights of her.
- 10:31Speaker 9: Yeah, blah things anyway.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Immediately, Laurie describes Charles as a man with violent tendencies
- 10:37who had a history of aggression against the women he
- 10:40had married. If she can convince detectives that Charles had
- 10:43a temper, it would make their version of events even
- 10:45more plausible.
- 10:46Speaker 7: So he went back to the Houston US and he's like,
- 10:49I'm coming on Wednesday night and I'm going to come
- 10:51pick up Juji and take him to school Thursday and
- 10:53pick him up Thursday and taking Friday whatever.
- 10:55Speaker 6: I said.
- 10:55Speaker 7: Cheesy wanted to come to the house, and I said,
- 10:57you can't come stay at this house because you can't
- 10:59get along Tyler. She's a miner and she.
- 11:01Speaker 8: Has a little hair.
- 11:02Speaker 7: Yeah, so you because he gets in huge rights up
- 11:04there and she hates him, and so I'm like, you
- 11:07can't stay at the house. So I would book your
- 11:09hotel because he stays in hotels all the time because
- 11:12he travels for business and the business pays for it.
- 11:14Speaker 6: What does he do.
- 11:15Speaker 7: He works with teachers and their retirement plans. But he
- 11:18goes to them that there's works in California. He has
- 11:21like books of business in the right areas and so
- 11:24he just goes wherever. I kind of just gets to
- 11:26have freedom that he doesn't have to stay home and
- 11:28Rada and take care of so she needs, yeah, an
- 11:30excuse her.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Right.
- 11:32Speaker 7: We came over in the morning and he's like banging
- 11:35on the door.
- 11:36Speaker 2: I'm like, all great, here you go.
- 11:37Speaker 7: You know, and then did you a cycle? Dad? And
- 11:42then he was like my friend to me, was like
- 11:45holding me. He's like you're hot day, give me too
- 11:46in school and I was like, it's okay, dad and kids.
- 11:49Speaker 15: Just driving to school somewhere. You know, I'm just trying
- 11:51to make it whatever.
- 11:53Speaker 7: Yeah, calm. And then he's just being real smirky and
- 11:58he like jerky, you know to me. And I was
- 12:00like they can write him or whatever. And so he
- 12:03was like, I mean the brother was served with you. No,
- 12:07he had stayed with me last night because I was
- 12:09worried he was going to come over and over has
- 12:11trouble with He just wanted someone else there, like my
- 12:14brother there, because I trust my brother.
- 12:17Speaker 1: They would claim self defense as the reason Charles was killed,
- 12:20and as the cops continue to question Laurie, they start
- 12:23to believe this even more.
- 12:25Speaker 8: He grows nuts. He's gone nuts on us a lot
- 12:27of times.
- 12:28Speaker 7: Ten and I've had to leave with JJ over the years,
- 12:30probably five times in just staying. I was all for
- 12:32two days because you don't.
- 12:34Speaker 6: Know what's going to set him up.
- 12:35Speaker 7: Like she's mad at me for always like going back.
- 12:38Speaker 3: But we had JJ.
- 12:39Speaker 7: He's special needs and it's really hard, like it's even
- 12:42higher to take him revintion.
- 12:43Speaker 10: So you thought, I don't want to.
- 12:46Speaker 8: Put words in your mouth, but you thought it was
- 12:49possible that he was.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Going to hurt you.
- 12:51Speaker 7: Absolutely, it was gonna hurt me entily, Okay, not JJ,
- 12:54You've never j J. And he hurt my brother like
- 12:58he was going ballistic about it.
- 13:01Speaker 5: Was that, okay.
- 13:03Speaker 1: An angry husband losing his temper during a divorce is
- 13:06not uncommon, and feuding couples often come to blows, making
- 13:10her story more and more convincing. But according to Charles's
- 13:13ex wife, Cheryl, this was not the man she knew.
- 13:17She says they were married and divorced and not one time,
- 13:21not one second, was he ever physically threatening to me,
- 13:25directly contradicting what Laurie is saying.
- 13:28Speaker 8: You say he goes nuts, that means that can mean
- 13:30a lot of different things.
- 13:32Speaker 7: So physical violence, he's never really besides like grabbing as
- 13:37and pushing us and I like punching ups or something.
- 13:40Speaker 6: But he looked tightly.
- 13:41Speaker 8: He has gotten physical.
- 13:42Speaker 7: Okay, he went like he was going to hit her,
- 13:44but then I got into them. So this morning comes
- 13:47back in because acond I haven't give a song. He
- 13:50was screaming at me give this song. He was very
- 13:52worried about whatever was on his text that he did
- 13:54not want me to see. And so I was just
- 13:57holding it there and he was screaming at me. And
- 14:00so Tyler came out of her room upset, and she
- 14:03had a bat, and she told him to leave her
- 14:05mother alone, like right, so she was really whatever he's
- 14:09screaming at her, don't you take me with that bat
- 14:11of all blah. And then my brother heard.
- 14:14Speaker 8: All the commotion because he was in there then, and
- 14:16so he came out into the main room and he's
- 14:21yelling at and so Tyler.
- 14:25Speaker 1: I guess, I don't know she swung at him.
- 14:27Speaker 7: Or what, but he like grabbed the bat from Tyly
- 14:29and then went to them hit tightly with the bat.
- 14:32Speaker 6: It was, and I was right there.
- 14:33Speaker 7: They were right there, and my brother grabbed him from behind,
- 14:37like just to stop him from it entirely. They got
- 14:40into the thing. He's hitting him with the bat, and
- 14:42they're on the ground like grappling around or whatever. And
- 14:46then your.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Brother with the bat wall they were grappling and.
- 14:50Speaker 1: So, yes, but there are lingering questions left by the investigation,
- 14:56one such example being that the autopsy ruled one of
- 14:59the gunshots in acted while Charles was on the ground.
- 15:02Imagine being in a situation where you have no choice
- 15:05but to shoot someone. You'd probably freeze up and you'd
- 15:08do anything you could to avoid anything but incapacitating them
- 15:12instead of finishing the job. So it seems strange that
- 15:15Alex decided to shoot Charles a second time when he
- 15:18was already flat on the ground. Furthermore, it also seems
- 15:22strange that it would take almost forty five minutes for
- 15:25anyone to call nine one one, although she claims it
- 15:27was down to shock. This is conveniently just enough time
- 15:31to concoct an alternative version of events and a solid
- 15:34story to give to the police.
- 15:36Speaker 5: Okay, so you you hear there you step up.
- 15:38Speaker 14: What's the first thing that you see Charles choosing any lurio?
- 15:41Speaker 8: Okay?
- 15:42Speaker 5: Had Tyler already gotten the bat? Did hear he have
- 15:46the back?
- 15:46Speaker 7: Okay?
- 15:47Speaker 1: So Charles is coming towards Lowrie or George Way.
- 15:50Speaker 3: And I showed him back.
- 15:51Speaker 5: Okay, I said, what are you doing?
- 15:54Speaker 14: Because he's coming at her aggressively.
- 15:55Speaker 5: Okay, it's the big news.
- 15:56Speaker 7: I wasn't going so he's coming there or you know,
- 16:00you shoved him back whatever right after that.
- 16:02Speaker 5: So I went into the bedroom. He was saying, dramming
- 16:04down and I came back.
- 16:05Speaker 14: I said, put that bat down. He's like, what are
- 16:07you going to do? So you're gonna cretain? Night was like,
- 16:09no one, I'm just gonna defend myself. So you put
- 16:13that bat down and he goes, no, yout what't like that?
- 16:15And he came at me, okay, and he already hit
- 16:17me in the head. She gave him how many times
- 16:19would you say? You told him to like put them
- 16:21back down?
- 16:22Speaker 11: Once?
- 16:22Speaker 5: Once?
- 16:23Speaker 7: Okay, and then he started advancing towards he is who
- 16:27shot you?
- 16:27Speaker 1: Fire?
- 16:28Speaker 5: I fell a couple.
- 16:30Speaker 1: One of Laurie's friends later reported that Laurie had said
- 16:33Alex believed her theories about Charles being possessed by evil,
- 16:37and the reason he was at the house at the
- 16:38time of death is simple. He believed Charles was going
- 16:41to try and kill Laurie and moved in with her
- 16:44to help keep her safe.
- 16:45Speaker 7: I didn't see the shot at her, and that I
- 16:47came back around and I saw that he was on
- 16:49the ground and it was freaking and so I was
- 16:54just freaking out, and I just lived into Mama, and
- 16:56I'm like, I've got to go to the kitchen.
- 16:58Speaker 11: You just go back and get to the kids.
- 17:00Speaker 12: I just like, I gets the.
- 17:01Speaker 7: Kids, and so I just went outside and to see
- 17:04if they were in there. Okay, I want them coming
- 17:06back in the house when all that, so I don't
- 17:08and Tyler was like looking at me, it was like
- 17:11the crazy eyes, like what just happened? And I told
- 17:14her to get in the car and went her to
- 17:16ToJ to school.
- 17:17Speaker 8: And I just when you came back in and you
- 17:21saw him on the ground, where was your brother?
- 17:23Speaker 6: Did you see him where he was at?
- 17:25Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 17:26Speaker 11: He was right in front of him.
- 17:27Speaker 15: Did your brother say anything to you at all?
- 17:30Speaker 6: Do you remember?
- 17:31Speaker 12: No?
- 17:31Speaker 6: We were both just in shock.
- 17:33Speaker 7: Like it was just I mean I had anything. I
- 17:36went out with the kids just to check on them first,
- 17:39and I was going to come back in maybe, but
- 17:41I didn't. I was like, I just have to get
- 17:43him to school and call the police.
- 17:46Speaker 8: You know, did you you were your brother say anything
- 17:49at some point about calling the police or calling nine
- 17:52one one?
- 17:52Speaker 2: Do you remember?
- 17:54Speaker 12: Yeah?
- 17:54Speaker 7: He called me okay and he said, are you taking
- 17:56guj his school? And I said, yeah, we need to
- 17:59call the police. Ood, okay, okay, So you.
- 18:03Speaker 15: He called you when you didn't come back inside, basically right, because.
- 18:06Speaker 7: I was like in the car per minute, and then
- 18:09I was like, what can I do?
- 18:10Speaker 1: It looks on the surface that an enraged Charles storms
- 18:14the house and started shouting at Laurie. Alex decided to intervene,
- 18:17fearing for his sister's life, but what started as a
- 18:20disagreement quickly turned into a fight, one that would end
- 18:23with Charles lying cold on the ground. And ty Lee
- 18:26seems to back up what Laurie and Alex said when
- 18:29she tells her version of events.
- 18:30Speaker 4: I opened the door and it was my stepdad and
- 18:35he was just screaming at both of them, like and
- 18:39so I just kind of sucked the vakeela out there,
- 18:41and then he like he just grabbed it, and so
- 18:44I fell to it around and then my uncle kind
- 18:48of like I saw him take step back.
- 18:50Speaker 11: So my uncle and then grabbed him and kind of
- 18:53took him back.
- 18:54Speaker 4: So we couldn't do anything, and so my mom said
- 18:56to you with JJ, and so I ran out the door.
- 19:00Speaker 11: And then I kind of just stood there, and then
- 19:02eventually my mom came out, and then I heard the noise,
- 19:07which I know what it was now, but it sounded
- 19:10like someone took it and hit it really hard against
- 19:13the floor. So I just wanted to make sure that,
- 19:15like my stepdad didn't do anything to my uncle and stuff.
- 19:19Speaker 7: And so she was like, no, that's fine, like we're
- 19:21just going to take to new school and only okay.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Despite Charles's lack of a violent history and how many
- 19:27times Alex nearly slipped up on scene, Laurie's story, coupled
- 19:31with ty Lee's perspective, was enough for detectives to officially
- 19:34rule this as self defense. But the death of Charles
- 19:38Valow was just the tip of the iceberg, and investigators
- 19:41quickly discovered that Laurie had become entangled in the world
- 19:44of a seedy cult that would turn this seemingly perfect
- 19:47mom into a stone cold killer. Laurie Nate Eaton with
- 19:50East Idaho News, can you tell me where your kids are?
- 19:54Where are your kids?
- 19:56Speaker 3: No comment, They've been missing for four months.
- 19:57Speaker 1: You have nothing to say.
- 19:58Speaker 13: Listen, just tell people what's happening.
- 20:00Speaker 7: There's people around the country praying for your children, praying
- 20:03for you.
- 20:03Speaker 12: Guys.
- 20:03Speaker 7: Why don't you give us answers.
- 20:05Speaker 2: That's great.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Just days after Charles's death, Laurie decided it was time
- 20:09for a change and moved the entire family across the
- 20:12country to Rexburg, Idaho, a strange choice at first until
- 20:17you realize that this was the hometown of Chad da Bell,
- 20:20and Laurie was now living minutes away from a man
- 20:23who had not only convinced her that her husband was evil,
- 20:26but was now beginning to spin the same evil stories
- 20:29for her kids as well. But this is when detectives
- 20:32met Melanie, Laurie's best friend and another member of her cult.
- 20:36She was there to spell all the sordid details on
- 20:39their ideology and the beliefs that could soon lead to
- 20:42the death of Laurie's kids.
- 20:44Speaker 12: Chen said that it's some childhood friend that Charles had,
- 20:48and that he died and then he came back as
- 20:51he didn't ever relieve he was an unclaim sparaently got
- 20:53trapped on earth, and he was now attached him for years,
- 20:56and he'd been studying him, right.
- 20:58Speaker 9: It's behaviors and stuff like that, and so then he
- 21:01pushed his.
- 21:01Speaker 5: Spirit out by and took over.
- 21:02Speaker 7: That's what he said.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Push Charles's spirit.
- 21:05Speaker 12: Yeah, so his spirit now moved on, So she believed
- 21:08that he was that Charles was gone. He was already gone,
- 21:10so she was treating him like he was a said Snyder.
- 21:12Speaker 1: This is all extremely confusing, but simultaneously eye opening, as
- 21:16it gives us a direct window into what Laurie believed
- 21:19about her own family. Apparently she thought Charles was possessed
- 21:23by a dark spirit, and by that point he was
- 21:25already gone. The problem is she thought the scene for
- 21:28her children Charles had corrupted them and they'd turn into zombies.
- 21:33Speaker 5: So you mentioned zombies.
- 21:35Speaker 9: Yeah, was that ever a turn that you were exposed
- 21:39to by them?
- 21:41Speaker 5: Okay, tell me more about the zombies that.
- 21:43Speaker 12: She had dream once and birthquake, having a new town
- 21:46people that fell there.
- 21:47Speaker 9: If they were able to get rid of all the
- 21:49zombies in the world, then those zombies won't get into
- 21:53those dead bodies and come back.
- 21:55Speaker 6: Number one.
- 21:55Speaker 9: I shouldn't mat but she's like, Okay, here's the United States.
- 21:57Speaker 2: We're going to prayer.
- 21:58Speaker 9: Let's find out how these zombies are in Arizona. Okay,
- 22:01there's twenty thousand. Yeah, I don't remark the number Joe
- 22:04saw out there.
- 22:05Speaker 12: And then she'd say a litle prayer, whatever word she'd
- 22:08come up with us she thought were powerful, and then
- 22:10he would check, oh, so many, I look like you
- 22:12can't could help find out. So then that was her
- 22:15way in my opinion, you know what I saw this
- 22:17was just through a prayer that these people would pass away.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Laurie believes that if the earth was to truly be pure,
- 22:23all the zombies had to be killed. Chad also began
- 22:27to feed Laurie more and more fantastical lies about how
- 22:30the world worked, including ascension, translation, and the ability to
- 22:35meet with God himself.
- 22:36Speaker 12: Then they had a skill of zero one hundred percent
- 22:39how much you could trust people.
- 22:41Speaker 9: I was supposed to be like ninety seven percent. They
- 22:43are always building me up anyway.
- 22:44Speaker 12: She would sometimes share like, oh.
- 22:46Speaker 9: This person at that ORSA, that's not trust for this percent.
- 22:49And that was their book game about all the maybe
- 22:52you know or don't know vibrations.
- 22:54Speaker 12: So vibrations, yes, I'm aware of that too. So according
- 22:57to how he would check, he's penulum being on. I
- 23:01didn't know about the beginning, but any one thousand was
- 23:03just to mean if you got to one thousand, that
- 23:05means you translated, or your beginning, your translation. And then
- 23:09as you get higher in your vibration, you could portle
- 23:12at some point.
- 23:14Speaker 9: Maybe to remember what she could say twenty five hundred
- 23:16maybe here, something like that. And so the more you
- 23:19went to the temple of your vibration would increase. So
- 23:22it's like this is like your light would increase that
- 23:25kind of like, if that makes sense.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Laurie had become convinced she could speak to Jesus and
- 23:30appeared to be consumed by Chad's work. Not long after,
- 23:34their relationship began to heat up, and they even started
- 23:37their religious podcast together that showed, frankly, just how insane
- 23:41she had become.
- 23:44Speaker 7: I too have seen the resurrected Jesus Christ, and he
- 23:47has told me my mission, and.
- 23:49Speaker 14: He has sent me to help people and lift.
- 23:52Speaker 3: Them in their missions.
- 23:54Speaker 1: Over time, Laurie had become more outspoken with her beliefs
- 23:57of zombies and began to tell her friends about how
- 23:59many people had been consumed by evil spirits and demons.
- 24:03Laurie then started telling her friends that her son JJ's
- 24:06behavior had changed and that he had started telling her
- 24:09he loved Satan, as well as becoming more disruptive in
- 24:12the home. Had police listened to Charles Vallo when he
- 24:15feared for JJ and Tylee's lives than they could have
- 24:18prevented this series of tragic events that followed. Only days
- 24:22after moving to Rexburg, Laurie, Alex, JJ, and Tylee visited
- 24:26Yellowstone Park. This was the last time anyone saw Tylee alive.
- 24:31Things became even stranger on September seventeenth, twenty nineteen, when
- 24:35JJ was spotted running into his Idaho home on a
- 24:38neighbor's door, caam never to be seen again. Months later,
- 24:42people started to realize that they hadn't heard from JJ
- 24:45in a long time, and Charles's parents called nine point
- 24:48one to alert the police of his disappearance. Laurie was
- 24:51caught lying to officers on November twenty sixth after they
- 24:54had made a welfare check on JJ. According to Laurie,
- 24:57her son was with her friend Melanie back in Arizona,
- 25:00but Melanie not only denied having him, but she also
- 25:03told police Laurie had asked her to lie and pretend
- 25:06to officers JJ was staying with her. Then in December,
- 25:10Alex died suddenly. His death was ruled as natural causes,
- 25:14but the amount of death and strange occurrences involving Laurie
- 25:17was reaching impossible levels of coincidence. By this time, police
- 25:21were also extremely concerned for the welfare of JJ and
- 25:24ty Lee, so Laurie was served an order in January
- 25:27twenty twenty forcing her to prove that they are safe
- 25:30and well. However, the deadline came and went, and Laurie
- 25:33was arrested three weeks later and placed on a bail
- 25:36of five million dollars. But even after the arrest, both
- 25:40Laurie and Chad remained silent and refused to give up
- 25:43any information on the kids. But finally, a further five
- 25:46months later, the police would get their answers when detectives
- 25:49initiated a search of Chad Dabell's property. There they found
- 25:53the bodies of JJ and ty Lee. JJ's body was
- 25:57found wrapped in duct tape and placed in a plastic bag,
- 26:00while tig Lee had been dismembered and burned in a
- 26:03fire pit before being buried
