- 0:16Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:18Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:21Speaker 1: a hater. It is that time of week where we
- 0:23Speaker 1: have a guest join us, coming to us live from
- 0:26Speaker 1: San Antonio, East Fresno's own Bruce Bowen.
- 0:31Speaker 2: What's going on?
- 0:32Speaker 3: You know what? I'm not going to let you do it.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Starting off with East Fresno. You know I'm from West Fresno.
- 0:37Speaker 3: It's West, my bad. No, you did that on purpose, man.
- 0:40Speaker 4: No, I didn't.
- 0:41Speaker 2: See, this time I did do it on purpose.
- 0:42Speaker 3: That's what you do. I read the comments. People, all
- 0:46Speaker 3: they want to do is hear us go back and forth.
- 0:48Speaker 3: They want to hear me talk about, you know, I'm
- 0:51Speaker 3: going to get you and all that stuff. But you
- 0:54Speaker 3: know it's West Fresno.
- 0:55Speaker 4: But you know what?
- 0:55Speaker 1: What makes it so bad is I was like, I
- 0:57Speaker 1: messed it up last time, but I'm not going to mess.
- 0:59Speaker 2: It up again. And then I came out here and
- 1:02Speaker 2: I messed it up again.
- 1:03Speaker 3: That's what we doing.
- 1:04Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Cause I'm happy to see you.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:10Speaker 2: This is always a good time. But we got you
- 1:13Speaker 2: back here.
- 1:14Speaker 3: I got, look here. I got this.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Okay. This is my calming teeth.
- 1:18Speaker 2: That's what you need.
- 1:19Speaker 3: My calming teeth. Only when I deal with you.
- 1:23Speaker 1: See, here's the worst thing about it, man. Bruce doing this,
- 1:25Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying? Because, you know, when I'm
- 1:27Speaker 1: trying to get Bruce, it ain't going to be about
- 1:28Speaker 1: what side of Fresno. It's all the same Fresno to me.
- 1:30Speaker 2: I don't know no better. You know, like, well, I'm
- 1:32Speaker 2: going to get you. I'm going to get you. I
- 1:34Speaker 2: wanted to start off. Look, this is the thing.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Bruce Bowen, San Antonio Spurs legend, retired jersey. He was
- 1:41Speaker 1: nice enough to let somebody borrow it, but I bet
- 1:44Speaker 1: you ain't going to do that again, right? retired jersey
- 1:47Speaker 1: number 12 up there in the rafters it's been a
- 1:50Speaker 1: down few years for the spurs um it ain't down
- 1:54Speaker 1: no more man like like when you watch this team
- 1:57Speaker 1: what do you think because this is here's what i
- 2:00Speaker 1: think is interesting and is a little bit different is
- 2:02Speaker 1: the spurs had the luck of two superstars who were
- 2:06Speaker 1: perfectly built for san antonio right david robinson into tim
- 2:10Speaker 1: duncan and Victor is similar to them, but Victor got
- 2:15Speaker 1: a different kind of star power and wattage to him.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Like he's not he is of a much different personality
- 2:22Speaker 1: than those guys are. But it still feels like this
- 2:25Speaker 1: is San Antonio Spurs basketball.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Well, yes.
- 2:28Speaker 3: And to Victor's credit, I think San Antonio has been
- 2:32Speaker 3: blessed with, I think, great thinkers of the game, high IQ,
- 2:37Speaker 3: big men. Now, I've played with some big men that
- 2:40Speaker 3: that elevator didn't quite get to the penthouse level. But
- 2:45Speaker 3: to think about how they have gone about things, Victor
- 2:49Speaker 3: wanted to be here. Now, you think about this. A
- 2:53Speaker 3: guy that's able to go to an organization that has
- 2:55Speaker 3: had successful foundation players, why wouldn't you want to? But
- 3:01Speaker 3: on top of that, still staying true to who he
- 3:04Speaker 3: is as far as his evolution goes. and his IQ
- 3:07Speaker 3: to seek out knowledge in different places and not be
- 3:11Speaker 3: afraid to tap into some individual that may be monks.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Let me go spend some time in China to learn
- 3:20Speaker 3: different things about how I can center myself in this
- 3:25Speaker 3: great league that we're in. How can I seek knowledge
- 3:29Speaker 3: from some of the former players that big men would
- 3:33Speaker 3: never think about seeking knowledge from? Hey, Jamal Crawford, I
- 3:37Speaker 3: like how crafty you were with the basketball. Hey, can
- 3:40Speaker 3: you give me some time? Obviously, Hakeem allows you on.
- 3:45Speaker 3: But just to say that one thing about Tim and
- 3:49Speaker 3: David that I've always appreciated is how they've been comfortable
- 3:54Speaker 3: in their own skin. And that's what you see in Victor.
- 3:57Speaker 3: You see him comfortable in his own skin, but being
- 4:00Speaker 3: so much different from a standpoint of, certain things that
- 4:04Speaker 3: turn him on, certain things that turn him off. But
- 4:07Speaker 3: at the same time, he has that same IQ of
- 4:13Speaker 3: wanting to be a better version of himself.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Let me tell you, and I want to get back
- 4:18Speaker 1: to talking about current Spurs, but as you mentioned that,
- 4:20Speaker 1: it got me thinking about something.
- 4:21Speaker 2: I was talking to somebody about this the other day.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Because of one bad playoff series, I feel like we
- 4:28Speaker 1: have really slept on what David Robinson was like, like the.
- 4:32Speaker 2: High end of David Robinson.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Like even you, where you play with him after the
- 4:35Speaker 1: back injury, you go look at the advanced numbers. David
- 4:38Speaker 1: Robinson was still David Robinson just at 25 minutes a game.
- 4:42Speaker 3: You know, you talk about the first big man that
- 4:45Speaker 3: would beat guys up and down the floor. You know,
- 4:49Speaker 3: you look at his frame and this is what I
- 4:51Speaker 3: think Wimby had, had to deal with. People look at
- 4:55Speaker 3: his frame and say, ah, He can't handle this. He
- 4:58Speaker 3: can't handle that. But all of a sudden, what you
- 5:00Speaker 3: see on the floor with Wimby is something that's truly special.
- 5:04Speaker 3: But you're not accustomed to seeing that from somebody with
- 5:07Speaker 3: his build. David had that build. But more importantly, he
- 5:14Speaker 3: didn't allow the bigs to beat him up so much
- 5:18Speaker 3: because he learned how to utilize his strengths more than
- 5:22Speaker 3: anything else. So I have a big guy that wants
- 5:25Speaker 3: to guard me on the block. Dave would take him
- 5:27Speaker 3: out to that wing and catch and rip right through
- 5:29Speaker 3: him and get to the basket. At that moment with
- 5:33Speaker 3: him and Avery Johnson, how many guys were running the
- 5:37Speaker 3: floor like Wimby does and what Dave was able to do?
- 5:40Speaker 3: And they're just pointing at the rim. I mean, in
- 5:43Speaker 3: full transition mode, not one of those things where you
- 5:46Speaker 3: could see the lob coming, but a certain play in
- 5:50Speaker 3: transition where that becomes part of the weapons that you
- 5:54Speaker 3: use when it comes to your offensive game. Davis ability
- 5:57Speaker 3: to block shots and stay with wing players at that time.
- 6:01Speaker 3: It was something we never had seen before. So to
- 6:04Speaker 3: see him do it, I mean, only other slender guy
- 6:07Speaker 3: was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar that I can think of, or, or
- 6:11Speaker 3: Ralph Sampson, who was more, I think in the lines
- 6:15Speaker 3: of what Wimby is, but at another level and, and
- 6:19Speaker 3: less upset about being that guy. Um, Only say that
- 6:24Speaker 3: because it seemed like Ralph Samson was always fighting somebody.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Like, why you so mad at.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Me, brother? I mean, come on.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Ralph in the NBA finals.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Our guy, Howard Bryant, you know, he grew up as
- 6:35Speaker 1: a Celtics fan. He hated Ralph Samson so much.
- 6:38Speaker 2: So much.
- 6:41Speaker 3: But, you know, that's the beauty of this is that
- 6:44Speaker 3: Dave was not a guy that was, well, when I played,
- 6:47Speaker 3: I did this. That, you don't ever hear from Dave.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Dave was about what he could do to I think
- 6:54Speaker 3: more importantly, add to his longevity in the game. And
- 6:59Speaker 3: I played two years with him and it was interesting.
- 7:02Speaker 3: I had heard the yoga that he did. And so
- 7:07Speaker 3: I said, Dave, tell me about the yoga and what
- 7:09Speaker 3: it does for you. And Dave hopped into a position. Oh,
- 7:14Speaker 3: and I was like, you're right. And I'm saying to myself, like, man,
- 7:18Speaker 3: that looked like your abs really gotta be strong to
- 7:22Speaker 3: do that. You know, meaning, please don't ask me to
- 7:25Speaker 3: do it, Dave. But what he was doing, I think
- 7:30Speaker 3: he was ahead of time as far as the way
- 7:32Speaker 3: you have to take care of your body being that
- 7:35Speaker 3: size so that you don't wake up with knots in
- 7:38Speaker 3: your muscles and things of that nature. But he was
- 7:42Speaker 3: funny in how he did things as well. Dave, he
- 7:45Speaker 3: would just say, uh-uh, when you thought you were driving
- 7:48Speaker 3: in to get, oh, no, not that one. No, you
- 7:51Speaker 3: got to try that again. And it's just, it was
- 7:54Speaker 3: humorous to me. But at the same time, he was
- 7:58Speaker 3: sending a message that, hey, I may not talk trash
- 8:01Speaker 3: like these other folks, but I do have something to
- 8:05Speaker 3: say about whether you score or not. And so you
- 8:08Speaker 3: think about that and you look at me being able
- 8:11Speaker 3: to press up on guys, knowing that I had Dave
- 8:14Speaker 3: back there. And even Dave, at his final two years,
- 8:19Speaker 3: was still better than a whole lot of others that
- 8:22Speaker 3: were in A-prime. Yeah.
- 8:24Speaker 1: The thing that I find interesting between David and Victor
- 8:26Speaker 1: is Victor is a much ornery character. Like, Victor seems
- 8:30Speaker 1: to be, as my buddy Joel Anderson says, motivated by spite.
- 8:36Speaker 3: See, and that's the beauty of Dave. Dave's a strong,
- 8:39Speaker 3: devout Christian. And Dave would bless you, brother, for feeling
- 8:43Speaker 3: that way about me. And I'm still going to give
- 8:46Speaker 3: you 30 and 15. And whereas Victor, like, this is
- 8:51Speaker 3: the thing. I couldn't stand it when reporters with little
- 8:57Speaker 3: snide remarks, yeah, but you seem to walk up under
- 9:00Speaker 3: him while he was shooting. Can you believe that, Bomani?
- 9:03Speaker 3: They would say stuff like that on the low and
- 9:06Speaker 3: it bothered me and I couldn't do much about it
- 9:10Speaker 3: because I didn't have that intention of what they saw,
- 9:15Speaker 3: but they would immediately say things like, oh, he tried
- 9:19Speaker 3: to do that. He's a dirty guy. Now, that being said,
- 9:23Speaker 3: I heard that, but I didn't say anything to it.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Whereas Victor has heard all the folks talking about, ah,
- 9:31Speaker 3: just take him on the block. He can't do nothing
- 9:35Speaker 3: because all you have to do is be physical with him.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Draymond knew that that was the only, that was the
- 9:41Speaker 3: last line of defense he had on him is to
- 9:44Speaker 3: try to be physical with him. Two years ago, Victor
- 9:47Speaker 3: probably would have tussled with somebody trying to show how
- 9:50Speaker 3: strong he is. Now, He sets them up to utilize
- 9:54Speaker 3: their strength against them. And what happened when you press
- 9:58Speaker 3: up on him on that underneath out of bounds play
- 10:01Speaker 3: he spins and he's catching it for an and one
- 10:04Speaker 3: that's the ultimate get back in that particular moment as
- 10:07Speaker 3: far as i'm concerned.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Take that Now, how good are the rest of them dudes? That's,
- 10:12Speaker 1: I think, the most interesting question. Because, I mean, we
- 10:15Speaker 1: got a pretty decent idea about De'Aaron Fox, who I
- 10:17Speaker 1: think has done a good job of recognizing that, like,
- 10:21Speaker 1: you playing with the guy, right?
- 10:24Speaker 2: Like, don't lose track of what really matters. But he's
- 10:28Speaker 2: been good.
- 10:29Speaker 1: They got all these young dudes, but I feel like
- 10:32Speaker 1: they could win the West, but everybody got the same point,
- 10:34Speaker 1: and it's a fair one. They've never won anything, like
- 10:36Speaker 1: a single solitary playoff series.
- 10:39Speaker 3: And that's fair, Bomani. It really is. And that's always
- 10:42Speaker 3: been my thought process with this group prior to it
- 10:45Speaker 3: coming together quite like it is now. I always have
- 10:48Speaker 3: shared with people that you need experience. You need that
- 10:52Speaker 3: failure to teach you more than anything else. Case in point,
- 10:57Speaker 3: this last game against the New York Knicks, they had
- 11:00Speaker 3: 11-game win streak. And what stood out to me in
- 11:04Speaker 3: that little moment was... Okay, what happens to most is
- 11:10Speaker 3: when you get on a win streak, you become more
- 11:13Speaker 3: concerned with the W's than how you went about being
- 11:17Speaker 3: the best you could be and taking whatever happened. Now
- 11:23Speaker 3: on those win streaks, this is why coaches are so
- 11:26Speaker 3: thrilled when they come to an end. Now you will
- 11:28Speaker 3: start listening to me again. Now I can coach you
- 11:31Speaker 3: again because before I could coach you and we got
- 11:34Speaker 3: on a win streak, And then it became skipping steps
- 11:38Speaker 3: to get a W. We saw steps skipped in that game.
- 11:42Speaker 3: And in those steps that were skipped, I'm sure Mitch
- 11:45Speaker 3: was able to go back and film and say, hey, fellas,
- 11:49Speaker 3: look at this. Look at how we just tried to
- 11:52Speaker 3: get Wimby the ball in a rush and didn't really
- 11:54Speaker 3: take note of how he was being played and how
- 11:58Speaker 3: we could counter to maybe there's someone denying him. Those
- 12:02Speaker 3: are the little things that those lessons of losing a
- 12:07Speaker 3: win streak or losing a game you're able to learn from.
- 12:11Speaker 3: In the playoffs, it becomes more heightened. Now you see
- 12:14Speaker 3: so many things that only one that maybe have a
- 12:17Speaker 3: little bit of a playoff experience that I can think
- 12:20Speaker 3: of at the top of my head is Fox.
- 12:23Speaker 2: And Harrison.
- 12:23Speaker 3: Harrison Barnes. And Harrison Barnes, exactly. And what you have
- 12:28Speaker 3: in those two are so valuable. The things that they
- 12:31Speaker 3: can bring to the table are so valuable for a
- 12:33Speaker 3: guy who's excited. You know, Vassell, excited. Kelton Johnson, excited.
- 12:40Speaker 3: Being able to get to that point and feel like,
- 12:45Speaker 3: oh my goodness, this is what they're talking about. Because
- 12:48Speaker 3: I remember my first year in the NBA, I went to,
- 12:54Speaker 3: it was my second year, I believe it was, I
- 12:57Speaker 3: go to the Lakers, they're still at the forum, and
- 12:59Speaker 3: they're playing the Portland Trail Blazers. And that's when the big,
- 13:04Speaker 3: he was a tall, skinnier version, bouncy guy that went
- 13:10Speaker 3: to Iowa State. Coutinho, no, not Coutinho.
- 13:13Speaker 2: No, Kelvin Cato.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Kelvin Cato. When Shaq dunked on him, but you bring
- 13:20Speaker 3: up that clip, but when Shaq dunked on him, That
- 13:23Speaker 3: was a moment where Calvin Cato realized that his defensive
- 13:28Speaker 3: rotations needed to be a tenth of a second quicker.
- 13:35Speaker 3: The fact that he was rotating late because he's never
- 13:39Speaker 3: been in that environment and the way that Shaq stretched
- 13:44Speaker 3: out on him, I still think about this one. And
- 13:48Speaker 3: just the way it happened, I saw it coming. I'm like, uh-oh, uh-oh.
- 13:52Speaker 3: And boom, it happens. Also during that time, that's when J.R.
- 13:56Speaker 3: Ryder told the press, said, I own Eddie Jones. And
- 14:01Speaker 3: every time he scored, he would pull his jersey a
- 14:04Speaker 3: little bit like, I got heart, Eddie doesn't. And so
- 14:08Speaker 3: all these different things go on during the course of
- 14:11Speaker 3: playoffs where the game slows down and there's a focus
- 14:15Speaker 3: that happens. teams aren't coming up with new plays, but
- 14:18Speaker 3: it's about the execution of the plays that they have
- 14:22Speaker 3: where you're saying, oh my goodness, this is truly special. So,
- 14:25Speaker 3: you know, you look at being that it's Victor had
- 14:30Speaker 3: a rookie of the year and not Vassell, but....
- 14:35Speaker 2: Castle.
- 14:36Speaker 4: Castle.
- 14:37Speaker 3: What they have, Castle's ability to learn on the fly
- 14:41Speaker 3: because I look at Castle as far as his ability
- 14:44Speaker 3: to make the change in defense and I remember last year,
- 14:47Speaker 3: there were a couple of times he opened up a
- 14:50Speaker 3: little bit on certain guys and that gave them a
- 14:52Speaker 3: driving way. Now he's become more physical and he's starting
- 14:55Speaker 3: to really enforce his will on the defensive side, let
- 14:59Speaker 3: alone the offensive side. You look at Harper, what he's
- 15:02Speaker 3: able to do. We have so many different valuable options now. Now,
- 15:08Speaker 3: when it comes to playoff basketball, who's able to play
- 15:12Speaker 3: their role to a tee, who's able to understand how
- 15:15Speaker 3: important it is to follow a game plan and how
- 15:19Speaker 3: necessary it is to pay attention to detail. Those are
- 15:23Speaker 3: the things, those are the things that you learn during
- 15:25Speaker 3: the course of that time. But I feel like they
- 15:28Speaker 3: can win a series and learn from that series and
- 15:33Speaker 3: learn how more important things are because of that. It
- 15:36Speaker 3: doesn't happen often, but I think that they're capable of
- 15:40Speaker 3: doing that. All right.
- 15:41Speaker 2: If you had to pick somebody in the West right now, though,
- 15:43Speaker 2: which way are you going?
- 15:45Speaker 3: Well, I think it's hard. to not pick the champions,
- 15:49Speaker 3: especially when they're in first place. So it's always going
- 15:53Speaker 3: to be them. But I think even in the fact
- 15:57Speaker 3: that if Spurs and OKC meet up in the Western
- 16:00Speaker 3: Conference Finals, the only edge I would give OKC is
- 16:05Speaker 3: the fact that they've been there before.
- 16:07Speaker 2: Now, where are you on Denver?
- 16:10Speaker 1: Cause I still think they got the best play on Denver.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Cause I still feel like, oh, you're not here in Denver.
- 16:15Speaker 1: You're not here boy.
- 16:16Speaker 3: You know, it's just, it's, and I only have to
- 16:18Speaker 3: say this because they're missing the key component that you
- 16:22Speaker 3: never see. Right. You never see Jokic get out of character. And,
- 16:30Speaker 3: and what transpired in that, in that OKC game, I
- 16:34Speaker 3: look at it from a standpoint of, no, you're the three,
- 16:38Speaker 3: three time MVP. that can't happen to you. And I
- 16:44Speaker 3: know people are going to say, well, he's human and
- 16:46Speaker 3: he got to, sometimes you just have to. And I'm
- 16:49Speaker 3: just saying, as far as the edge of you having
- 16:53Speaker 3: something over someone else, you can never allow a moment
- 16:56Speaker 3: to happen where you're saying things like, oh man, I
- 17:01Speaker 3: lost my cool. And now everyone knows that I'm human.
- 17:08Speaker 3: And Because sometimes it's just that mental edge that you
- 17:10Speaker 3: have as an athlete, as a basketball player, football player,
- 17:13Speaker 3: whatever it is. That's where you keep your edge. Whereas
- 17:16Speaker 3: like a player like Kobe, he kept the edge on
- 17:19Speaker 3: a lot of guys because of the mental aspect of
- 17:22Speaker 3: not allowing them to ever feel like they got in.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Yeah, like this is.
- 17:27Speaker 1: I feel like Denver's got the they've done it before.
- 17:29Speaker 1: We talked about this the other day. It's like we
- 17:31Speaker 1: give Minnesota no credit for the fact that they've been
- 17:33Speaker 1: knocking on the door these last two years, right? I
- 17:36Speaker 1: don't think that they're champions, just to be clear, but
- 17:38Speaker 1: it is interesting. Anthony Edwards, he's like, I've seen all
- 17:42Speaker 1: my heroes, and I've taken them all down at least once.
- 17:46Speaker 4: Right?
- 17:47Speaker 2: Every single one of them. He's like, I had something
- 17:51Speaker 2: for all of them.
- 17:52Speaker 3: That's scary for... a team going up against him because
- 17:58Speaker 3: he can rally the troops, and there hasn't been many,
- 18:04Speaker 3: rallying the troops kind of like Kobe, kind of like MJ.
- 18:11Speaker 3: It was interesting to see their growth without Cat because
- 18:15Speaker 3: it becomes a different team. And yes, they're more wide open,
- 18:20Speaker 3: but at the same time, I know we give the
- 18:23Speaker 3: French boy a hard time down low, But he's still
- 18:28Speaker 3: able to get things done on the defensive side.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Right. He's a good player.
- 18:34Speaker 3: Yes. He's a good player. Maybe it's because Shaq keeps
- 18:40Speaker 3: talking about him so bad. It's because everybody.
- 18:42Speaker 1: I don't think any player in the history of the
- 18:46Speaker 1: NBA has ever been less respected in the course of
- 18:50Speaker 1: what will be a Hall of Fame career than Rudy Colbert.
- 18:54Speaker 3: You know... And again, when you think of Rudy Gobert,
- 18:59Speaker 3: do you ever think of highlights?
- 19:01Speaker 2: No.
- 19:03Speaker 3: I just saw the last one. Draymond Hattie. And it's
- 19:07Speaker 3: that picture of him. You didn't see him like, you
- 19:12Speaker 3: better get off me trying to choke me. It was like...
- 19:17Speaker 3: That's the part. But then you watch them in that
- 19:24Speaker 3: game in Denver. I'm watching them like, Rudy, why do
- 19:30Speaker 3: I feel this way? But again, it's part of the whole.
- 19:35Speaker 3: It's Shaq. It's the pictures that we see. It's the things.
- 19:40Speaker 3: It's the low lights that we see instead of the highlights.
- 19:45Speaker 3: And he is, so getting back to facing that, team
- 19:50Speaker 3: with a leader like, ooh, man, AD is just, he,
- 19:58Speaker 3: and I think what stands out about Anthony Edwards right
- 20:01Speaker 3: now is that whole confrontation with the coach. People made
- 20:06Speaker 3: more of it than they should have, but There's many
- 20:09Speaker 3: a times coaches are gonna say pass, hit the open man.
- 20:12Speaker 3: But to see his fire, like, no, I got this.
- 20:18Speaker 3: This is what I do. Yes, it is. But when
- 20:22Speaker 3: you have someone open, it's that moment with Michael Jordan
- 20:27Speaker 3: and Pax. And when Phil Jackson says, Michael, who's open?
- 20:32Speaker 3: And he says, Pax is open. Then get him the ball.
- 20:37Speaker 3: And next thing you know, in L.A., Michael does it once.
- 20:41Speaker 3: Michael does it a couple of times. But it's what
- 20:45Speaker 3: Michael created first and foremost that we understand what he's
- 20:49Speaker 3: able to do before he starts getting it to the
- 20:52Speaker 3: open guys. So I think this is what's scary about
- 20:56Speaker 3: Anthony Edwards is that what he's doing, as you said,
- 21:00Speaker 3: taking down everybody. When you see LeBron James, now listen
- 21:03Speaker 3: to LeBron at the All-Star game. Hey, man, I love
- 21:07Speaker 3: what I see in AD. I want him to keep going.
- 21:10Speaker 3: Now you got people that you've had on the hit list,
- 21:14Speaker 3: so to speak. Now they're giving you compliments like that? Ooh,
- 21:19Speaker 3: that's scary, Bomani. That's why you never heard me say
- 21:22Speaker 3: nothing positive other than the generic, He's a great competitor.
- 21:27Speaker 2: That's what he does.
- 21:29Speaker 3: You're not going to hear me praise no Vince Carter.
- 21:34Speaker 2: You and Vince.
- 21:35Speaker 3: You're not going to hear me praise no Ray Allen.
- 21:38Speaker 1: We wouldn't hear you praise Vince Carter because you just
- 21:41Speaker 1: not go praise.
- 21:42Speaker 2: We wouldn't hear you praise Vince Carter right now.
- 21:45Speaker 3: Sure. I think he was the most talented guy. He
- 21:49Speaker 3: just didn't have that. that other piece that was necessary
- 21:53Speaker 3: some people say the Wizard of Oz I like to
- 21:55Speaker 3: say the Wiz you know ease on down ease on
- 21:59Speaker 3: down the road what I love.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Here what I love here is that you were like
- 22:04Speaker 2: I will.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Compliment him knowing the whole way that in the tuck
- 22:09Speaker 1: you was coming right behind it but talk about that
- 22:13Speaker 1: man's ticker.
- 22:15Speaker 3: Well I'm on the right time right There's no better
- 22:20Speaker 3: time than the right time.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Like, I'd love to get your list because Vince is
- 22:27Speaker 2: the only one that I know.
- 22:28Speaker 1: Like, nobody excites you quite like Vince when it's time
- 22:31Speaker 1: to talk about what ain't.
- 22:33Speaker 3: Well, you know, Vince has some choice things to say.
- 22:37Speaker 3: And I just felt like in our time, Ray Allen,
- 22:43Speaker 3: he could have talked to me too. But Ray and
- 22:45Speaker 3: I were good. It's just, it was a spirit of competition. Whereas,
- 22:51Speaker 3: I look at what, and this is all jokes aside,
- 22:56Speaker 3: Vince was the most talented guy. Like, playing that position,
- 23:02Speaker 3: he had bounce. He could shoot the ball. It wasn't like,
- 23:05Speaker 3: back up, back up. He can't shoot. That wasn't the case.
- 23:09Speaker 3: Vince got kicked out of a game with me, and
- 23:12Speaker 3: he had, like, 38 points. Like, I remember Manu in
- 23:16Speaker 3: the locker room right after the game said, Bruce, I
- 23:19Speaker 3: don't care what you say. You could talk about my mama.
- 23:23Speaker 3: I got 38 on you. I'm going for a career
- 23:25Speaker 3: high on you. But that was the difference in Manu and, say,
- 23:30Speaker 3: Vince Carter. Vince allowed those moments of emotions to get
- 23:34Speaker 3: to him. And who ends up winning? The cooler head
- 23:39Speaker 3: always wins. The cooler head always prevail. So I understood that.
- 23:44Speaker 3: So if I know how to push your buttons, then do-do-do-do-do-do.
- 23:48Speaker 3: Set to blow up in the third quarter at this point. Engage.
- 23:54Speaker 1: It's so fun to know that you weren't accidentally like this.
- 24:03Speaker 2: You were really doing the math.
- 24:07Speaker 3: I tell you, man, I would sit and listen. I
- 24:11Speaker 3: observe because I think I like to observe people and
- 24:15Speaker 3: how they do things. But I remember being at a
- 24:19Speaker 3: place and it's the summertime and this is a star
- 24:24Speaker 3: in the league. And he tells me, hey, you know,
- 24:28Speaker 3: every time we play, you kind of you hit me
- 24:31Speaker 3: a little bit after the shot. You're not supposed to
- 24:33Speaker 3: do that. I said, oh, I'm sorry. My bad. That's
- 24:38Speaker 3: my bad.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Very tough.
- 24:40Speaker 3: Oh, shoot. He don't like it when I.
- 24:45Speaker 4: Man, when these guys started saying all this stuff, I'm recording.
- 24:50Speaker 3: Like, really? Oh, my goodness. I'm getting back to the
- 24:56Speaker 3: crib like, yo, guess what I just found out? In
- 25:01Speaker 3: those moments, it's like, in the most adverse situation, fourth quarter,
- 25:07Speaker 3: let me see How true this is. Let me poke
- 25:12Speaker 3: the bear a little bit. Next thing you know, man,
- 25:15Speaker 3: I'm getting such a reaction. I didn't know that. But
- 25:18Speaker 3: I only knew because they shared that with me.
- 25:22Speaker 2: They just told you, huh?
- 25:23Speaker 3: So thank y'all.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Coming up next, we're going to find out what Bruce
- 25:27Speaker 1: Bowen thinks about what's going on in L.A.

- 29:31Speaker 2: with Bruce Bowen.
- 29:33Speaker 1: I guess this is what, I want to talk to
- 29:35Speaker 1: you about the Lakers, but I just had.
- 29:36Speaker 2: This moment where I thought about this.
- 29:38Speaker 1: The Clippers are the most interesting defense team that isn't
- 29:41Speaker 1: really winning.
- 29:42Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 29:43Speaker 3: Why you got... You know I got fired for my
- 29:45Speaker 3: comments with the Clippers. You know that.
- 29:48Speaker 2: I thought you... I thought that you would let that go.
- 29:52Speaker 3: No, no, no. I didn't say I was mad about it.
- 29:54Speaker 3: I just said, you know... I did. I did.
- 29:56Speaker 4: I did.
- 29:57Speaker 1: I did. See, this is what was happening right now.
- 30:00Speaker 1: I know you're such a stand-up dude that I can
- 30:02Speaker 1: trust you to be fair, right? Because what is interesting
- 30:06Speaker 1: about it is.
- 30:06Speaker 2: They looked terrible. Then they looked great. Then they gave
- 30:12Speaker 2: up on the season.
- 30:13Speaker 1: But Kawhi Leonard has been incredible this year in a
- 30:17Speaker 1: way you rarely see for a guy playing on a
- 30:20Speaker 1: team that doesn't matter.
- 30:22Speaker 3: Well... I think because of all the stuff that's going
- 30:25Speaker 3: on around Kawhi, it's been one of those situations where
- 30:28Speaker 3: Uncle Dennis is like, hey, man, look here, we can't
- 30:31Speaker 3: back it in. We still got a job to do.
- 30:36Speaker 3: And it goes to that part of professionalism that he's displaying.
- 30:43Speaker 3: But at the end of the day, it's how the
- 30:46Speaker 3: foundation is within that organization. I think they have a
- 30:51Speaker 3: great coaching staff. Great, Coach. B. Shaw, my man, you
- 30:56Speaker 3: talk about hero, mentor, all that. You have that in him.
- 31:03Speaker 3: He knows how to connect with players. Now you got
- 31:06Speaker 3: Jeff Van Gundy as an assistant who loves the game
- 31:10Speaker 3: of basketball. You know, the Van Gundys, period. They just,
- 31:15Speaker 3: they're born with knowledge of the game. And Ty Lue,
- 31:19Speaker 3: NBA champion, NBA player, a champion as a player, you
- 31:25Speaker 3: have what's necessary there. But then you have Mr. Frank.
- 31:30Speaker 3: That's where, like, everything has to line up in a
- 31:36Speaker 3: way accordingly that's going to continue to allow you to build.
- 31:40Speaker 3: The fact that they, I love that they got ahead
- 31:42Speaker 3: of the situation with James Harden, but it still puts
- 31:47Speaker 3: them back in that scenario of, what are we talking
- 31:50Speaker 3: about here?
- 31:51Speaker 1: Come on.
- 31:52Speaker 3: Sometimes the Clippers just can't not get clipped because they
- 31:57Speaker 3: the Clippers.
- 31:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 32:00Speaker 1: But hey, the Lakers, I say this, the Clippers, it's
- 32:04Speaker 1: been an interesting season that they could wind up getting
- 32:07Speaker 1: out to play in and feel good about themselves if
- 32:10Speaker 1: they got there, right? I don't think there's anything that
- 32:12Speaker 1: could happen to make the Lakers feel good, right? Like
- 32:15Speaker 1: you have Luka Doncic, you have LeBron James, and you
- 32:19Speaker 1: guys will be lucky if you win two games in
- 32:21Speaker 1: the first round.
- 32:24Speaker 3: Bomani, there's this thing, and I say this to all
- 32:28Speaker 3: leaders when I'm coaching, whether it's corporate setting or giving
- 32:32Speaker 3: a motivational speech or coaching my 14-year-old group. To whom
- 32:38Speaker 3: much is given, much is required. So you've been blessed
- 32:43Speaker 3: with a certain skill set. And because you've been blessed
- 32:48Speaker 3: with a certain skill set, it is so important that
- 32:52Speaker 3: you do all the little things that others will be
- 32:58Speaker 3: able to see a leader in you that they can
- 33:01Speaker 3: get behind. Allah, you have LeBron James on the same
- 33:06Speaker 3: team with Luka. Luka could look at LeBron and say, man,
- 33:09Speaker 3: look at what he's done with his body for the
- 33:13Speaker 3: amount of time he's been in the NBA. Usually by
- 33:18Speaker 3: somebody's 38th year, or I should say being 38 years
- 33:22Speaker 3: of age, you no longer see cut up. You start
- 33:26Speaker 3: to see a little fluff going on that muscle because
- 33:29Speaker 3: they're not working out like they used to. But that's
- 33:32Speaker 3: the example that you see in LeBron, getting out on
- 33:35Speaker 3: fast breaks. If he turns it over now, I mean,
- 33:40Speaker 3: if there's anybody that gets a pass, it's a 40-year-old
- 33:43Speaker 3: getting back on defense. But when I see someone steal
- 33:48Speaker 3: the ball from Luka, and he barely attempts to get
- 33:52Speaker 3: back or he's chatting with the ref because he feels
- 33:54Speaker 3: like he's been wronged. He hit my hand before he
- 33:57Speaker 3: hit the ball. That's where I have the issue of
- 34:01Speaker 3: you are a leader. What message are you sending to
- 34:05Speaker 3: your teammates on the bench? When you don't go hard
- 34:09Speaker 3: because you didn't feel like you got the fair call,
- 34:13Speaker 3: I have an issue with that because I've been around
- 34:16Speaker 3: some greats that it didn't matter Okay, that's what you
- 34:20Speaker 3: want to do? You fouling me. Okay, but they're not
- 34:23Speaker 3: going to call it? All right, I'm not going to
- 34:25Speaker 3: go complain to the official. I'm going to go right
- 34:28Speaker 3: through your nose in order to make my point. Tim Hardaway,
- 34:32Speaker 3: I mean, before he got up in age, competitor. Went
- 34:38Speaker 3: at guys. Oh, yeah, that. Yeah, that. The UTEP two-step.
- 34:44Speaker 3: Watching him. Watching Zoe knowing all he got is a
- 34:48Speaker 3: jump hook. He gonna jump hook you to death or
- 34:51Speaker 3: he gonna dunk on you. But the spirit of competition,
- 34:56Speaker 3: you notice I didn't bring up my other two centers
- 35:00Speaker 3: that just would outthink you, outmaneuver you, and Tim Duncan
- 35:03Speaker 3: and Dave Robinson. That doesn't need to be said. But
- 35:07Speaker 3: to watch a guy who is a critical piece, especially
- 35:12Speaker 3: after what he's gone through in order to get there,
- 35:15Speaker 3: you would think that from that failure of being traded,
- 35:19Speaker 3: that it showed Luka that, man, I need to get
- 35:22Speaker 3: myself together. I need to make sure that that version
- 35:26Speaker 3: of what they saw in Dallas is not a version
- 35:28Speaker 3: they'll ever see with me as a Los Angeles Laker.
- 35:33Speaker 3: But what I see is some of that remnants of
- 35:36Speaker 3: what used to be still showing up.
- 35:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought this was going to be show and
- 35:40Speaker 2: prove here.
- 35:42Speaker 3: Well, think about this. The beginning of the year, he
- 35:45Speaker 3: came in a little slimmer.
- 35:47Speaker 2: Yeah. It did happen.
- 35:52Speaker 3: But, you know, old habits die hard. I get it.
- 35:55Speaker 3: But he can, with his talent, with his skill set,
- 36:00Speaker 3: he should be doing, I mean, it should not be
- 36:03Speaker 3: clips of us asking or watching J.J. Reddick, you know,
- 36:08Speaker 3: trying to talk to him and he pouting and things
- 36:11Speaker 3: like that. Again, Come on now. It's something to call it.
- 36:14Speaker 3: It's something to call accountability in this. But Manu, you
- 36:18Speaker 3: have a boss to answer to. You can't ever think that,
- 36:22Speaker 3: oh man, shoot, I'm the one. Now you may feel
- 36:24Speaker 3: like you're the one, but you can't ever act like
- 36:27Speaker 3: that when you're not bringing what you're supposed to bring
- 36:30Speaker 3: to the table or else they will what? Find someone else.
- 36:35Speaker 3: And I know that that sounds harsh, but in reality,
- 36:40Speaker 3: that's truly what it is. or you become handcuffed by
- 36:44Speaker 3: a player and his lack of effort from time to time.
- 36:49Speaker 3: And you don't want an organization like that. Those organizations
- 36:53Speaker 3: don't accomplish much in life.
- 36:55Speaker 1: Now I want to go to the East and I've
- 36:57Speaker 1: talked about this on the show and I've talked about
- 37:00Speaker 1: this with you a little bit, but we didn't really
- 37:02Speaker 1: get into it. I'm curious because you have much more
- 37:05Speaker 1: experience as a, obviously as a professional basketball player, I
- 37:08Speaker 1: can only assume that if the Celtics bring Jason Tatum back,
- 37:13Speaker 1: everybody medical involved somehow thinks that this is okay. Okay
- 37:18Speaker 1: and a good idea are two different things. I would
- 37:21Speaker 1: have never dreamed of bringing him back out there this year.
- 37:25Speaker 1: they seem like they're going.
- 37:26Speaker 2: To do it.
- 37:27Speaker 1: And like the idea is, and I'm curious what you
- 37:29Speaker 1: think about this is if Jason Tatum was going to
- 37:31Speaker 1: come off the bench and be Vinnie Johnson and just
- 37:33Speaker 1: gun for 15 minutes a game.
- 37:35Speaker 2: Okay.
- 37:35Speaker 1: Maybe that works, but I don't, I don't know how
- 37:38Speaker 1: you just drop Jason Tatum in coming off an Achilles
- 37:41Speaker 1: with as much uncertainty as we'll have about what that
- 37:43Speaker 1: means about what he has to provide. And everybody like,
- 37:46Speaker 1: I just feel like you look around. I'm like, Oh,
- 37:48Speaker 1: this is normal to everybody. I feel like I'm the crazy.
- 37:51Speaker 3: It, Well, first of all, thank you for giving me
- 37:54Speaker 3: that experience of being a player. You know, it's very
- 37:58Speaker 3: rare that I get those kind of compliments from you, Bomani.
- 38:01Speaker 3: But I like to go back to this. Celtics years
- 38:08Speaker 3: ago had a player by the name of Isaiah Thomas.
- 38:12Speaker 3: And he had an incredible year. He was building up,
- 38:16Speaker 3: carried the team, dealing with so many emotional things. He
- 38:20Speaker 3: lost his sister. and just certain things in life was
- 38:23Speaker 3: taking a toll. But he gave his all to that organization,
- 38:26Speaker 3: playing hurt. Now, as time went on, they found out
- 38:32Speaker 3: that maybe he shouldn't have been playing. And I get it.
- 38:37Speaker 3: This is a business. But at the same time, I
- 38:41Speaker 3: started off today, you and I were talking. I talked
- 38:44Speaker 3: about how as you get older, you got to be
- 38:46Speaker 3: able to conform with the newer nuances of whatever the
- 38:50Speaker 3: game is, whether it's new offensive plays, whether it's different
- 38:54Speaker 3: ways of handling a medical staff. But your investment is
- 38:59Speaker 3: Jason Tatum. Jason Tatum is not a guy that comes
- 39:02Speaker 3: off the bench. Jason Tatum is an individual that's going
- 39:06Speaker 3: to have the ball in his hands for quite some
- 39:08Speaker 3: time because of how good he is. Now, if it's me,
- 39:13Speaker 3: I'm looking at it from the standpoint of I want
- 39:16Speaker 3: to protect my assets. Is it better for me to
- 39:19Speaker 3: have him now or let's start off with a week
- 39:22Speaker 3: of training camp and go from there next season? Right now,
- 39:27Speaker 3: they have a flow with how they do things. I
- 39:30Speaker 3: play for the Miami Heat and I remember when Alonzo
- 39:33Speaker 3: Mourning started coming back to practice, he sat out because
- 39:36Speaker 3: of the whole kidney issue and never knew if he
- 39:39Speaker 3: would play again. But then he showed up at practice
- 39:43Speaker 3: and he was doing conditioning drills and things like that.
- 39:46Speaker 3: Then he started practicing with us And at this time,
- 39:50Speaker 3: Anthony Mason, rest his soul, was an all-star for us
- 39:54Speaker 3: and our team MVP. He was playing the four position.
- 39:58Speaker 3: Brian Grant was at the five. I was at the three.
- 40:01Speaker 3: Eddie Jones at the two. And Tim Hardaway was at
- 40:03Speaker 3: the one. And so Zoe starts practicing with us. And
- 40:09Speaker 3: I'm like, hmm, Zoe's coming back. I don't know what
- 40:13Speaker 3: to think of it because I'm the player. All I'm
- 40:16Speaker 3: looking at from standpoint is, Hey, it's Zoe. He's going
- 40:19Speaker 3: to give us what he used to give us. Well,
- 40:21Speaker 3: Zoe was coming off of a kidney transplant. And because
- 40:27Speaker 3: of that, there were certain things we just didn't know
- 40:29Speaker 3: if he would ever get back to that player. So
- 40:33Speaker 3: I say that to share this. We start, we play
- 40:36Speaker 3: a game. We're incorporating Zoe back in. Mace is unhappy,
- 40:40Speaker 3: not because he doesn't like him, but because the flow
- 40:43Speaker 3: of the game changed. Now the ball was no longer
- 40:46Speaker 3: in Mace's hands. and Mason making decisions. Now, Zoe is
- 40:51Speaker 3: pounding the ball, getting to his shot, and it's created
- 40:55Speaker 3: a disruption. Now everyone is suffering because of that. Maybe
- 40:59Speaker 3: Zoe shouldn't have come back during the season quite like
- 41:02Speaker 3: he did. Now I say, looking ahead, what if now
- 41:06Speaker 3: Jalen's not able to get to touches, or not even Jalen.
- 41:09Speaker 3: It's going to be a role player that's not going
- 41:11Speaker 3: to get touches because Jason is taking a bulk load
- 41:15Speaker 3: of the shots. It's nothing against Jason Tatum. It's just
- 41:20Speaker 3: the disruption that happens during the course of a season,
- 41:23Speaker 3: or let alone the chemistry of what you guys got going. Again,
- 41:28Speaker 3: let me state this because somebody's going to hear this,
- 41:30Speaker 3: Bruce Bowen, and say that Jason Tatum shouldn't play because
- 41:33Speaker 3: he's terrible. That is not what I'm saying. He has
- 41:36Speaker 3: to go through a litany of different things. Do we
- 41:39Speaker 3: trust the explosion again? And all the things of what
- 41:44Speaker 3: happens during the course of games. How do you make
- 41:46Speaker 3: the adjustment? I don't know if that's necessarily the thing,
- 41:49Speaker 3: but if it's me, I'm protecting my asset, especially in
- 41:52Speaker 3: today's game, and utilize this year off to allow him
- 41:57Speaker 3: to kind of get his body back together and see
- 42:02Speaker 3: the game in a different light.
- 42:04Speaker 2: Let me tell you, this is my feeling.
- 42:06Speaker 1: If you're not going to play Jason Tatum 36 minutes
- 42:08Speaker 1: a game, I don't think you can put him in
- 42:10Speaker 1: front of Joe Mazzulla because that is a crazy person
- 42:13Speaker 1: who really only knows how to go hard. And I
- 42:15Speaker 1: say this as a compliment. Like, I can't believe how
- 42:17Speaker 1: much I've come to, I don't know this man, but
- 42:19Speaker 1: I've come to love.
- 42:20Speaker 2: Him, right?
- 42:20Speaker 1: Like, I appreciate, there's an outright sincerity and he's trying
- 42:24Speaker 1: to win all of this.
- 42:25Speaker 2: You know, he a little different.
- 42:27Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 42:30Speaker 3: We like to call it no fluff.
- 42:32Speaker 2: Yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 42:34Speaker 1: All he knows is what is directly in front of him.
- 42:37Speaker 1: That is all it is. But you're not going to
- 42:40Speaker 1: give him Jason Tatum and he'll be like, cool, I'll
- 42:41Speaker 1: just play him 10 minutes. His brain does not operate
- 42:45Speaker 1: like that.
- 42:46Speaker 3: Can I just give you this? When Joe was at
- 42:50Speaker 3: West Virginia, he didn't play a lot his freshman year,
- 42:53Speaker 3: sophomore year. He didn't play a whole lot. But he
- 42:56Speaker 3: got to start against Kentucky in the NCAA tournament, I
- 42:59Speaker 3: believe it was. And they beat him, and he has
- 43:01Speaker 3: 17 points. But what he talked about in his post-game interview,
- 43:06Speaker 3: it wasn't, yeah, you know, coaches finally realized what I
- 43:10Speaker 3: could do, and I'm just happy I got a chance
- 43:12Speaker 3: to do it. That wasn't what he said. What he
- 43:15Speaker 3: talked about, he said, my freshman year, because of our length,
- 43:19Speaker 3: I said, man, we could be a really good 1-3-1
- 43:21Speaker 3: zone team, and if we could just incorporate things because
- 43:25Speaker 3: of our length. My point in all that? as when
- 43:29Speaker 3: others are trying to get buckets, he's thinking about the
- 43:32Speaker 3: game at another level. No fluff. He is about that
- 43:37Speaker 3: life of how can I make this group better? Oh,
- 43:41Speaker 3: he's with me? Let's go. 38 minutes. Absolutely. 30 plus minutes.
- 43:45Speaker 3: Because with coaches that are always thinking of making it better,
- 43:50Speaker 3: they do not like seeing players that can't play suit
- 43:53Speaker 3: up because they will make the mistake of saying, so-and-so,
- 43:56Speaker 3: get in there for so-and-so. So for him, He doesn't
- 43:59Speaker 3: need to see Jason at all if he's not going
- 44:02Speaker 3: to utilize him. Once he starts seeing Jason, now it
- 44:06Speaker 3: starts happening. Sorry.
- 44:10Speaker 2: And then somebody got to be the one to try
- 44:11Speaker 2: to explain.
- 44:12Speaker 3: It to him. Who going to out-explain? Who going to
- 44:17Speaker 3: out-explain why this is not good? Brad can't even do it.
- 44:20Speaker 1: Yeah, Brad can't even explain that to him. And look,
- 44:23Speaker 1: I give Brad credit. Ime, I think, was a fairly
- 44:26Speaker 1: obvious hire. Or that was one that a lot of
- 44:29Speaker 1: other people would have made. Now, when he hired Mazzulli,
- 44:31Speaker 1: he was in a position where he kind of had
- 44:32Speaker 1: to because Ime, right?
- 44:35Speaker 2: And I thought in year one, we were like, hey,
- 44:36Speaker 2: I don't know about this.
- 44:37Speaker 1: And in year two, when they brought Cassell in as
- 44:39Speaker 1: an assistant, I don't know about you, but my thought
- 44:41Speaker 1: was your replacement is right there if you don't get
- 44:45Speaker 1: this straight. And nope, it's worked. And then this year,
- 44:48Speaker 1: this has been coach of the year level stuff that he.
- 44:52Speaker 2: Has managed to done. Dude, got to give it to Brad.
- 44:54Speaker 2: Brad was like, nah, I think I see something in
- 44:57Speaker 2: this dude.
- 44:57Speaker 3: Well, you think about Brad's mindset, how he thinks the
- 45:02Speaker 3: game and how he's a great thinker of the game.
- 45:05Speaker 3: Even at Butler, you know, what he was able to
- 45:07Speaker 3: do there. So I think it gets kind of brushed
- 45:13Speaker 3: off to the side of when they were putting a
- 45:16Speaker 3: staff together, what Brad saw in Joe. He saw that
- 45:22Speaker 3: person that we see now. And a lot of times
- 45:25Speaker 3: in these situations, Brad is so proud of what Joe
- 45:29Speaker 3: has been able to accomplish, not because it's tagged to him,
- 45:34Speaker 3: but because these are the things that Brad saw. And
- 45:38Speaker 3: Brad didn't know if Joe would ever get an opportunity
- 45:41Speaker 3: within the Celtic organization To be able to do this. Now,
- 45:46Speaker 3: that's not to say that Joe wouldn't have gone elsewhere
- 45:48Speaker 3: and maybe had a head coaching opportunity. But within this organization,
- 45:54Speaker 3: no one knew that the whole email deal would happen
- 45:56Speaker 3: the way it did. So more than anything, Brad is
- 46:00Speaker 3: thrilled with the mind that he knew Joe had because
- 46:04Speaker 3: we're talking about a guy in college again. nobody. I
- 46:07Speaker 3: know my teammates weren't thinking about no doggone 1-3-1. I
- 46:13Speaker 3: had some thugs. I had a guy hit our coach
- 46:16Speaker 3: one time at practice.
- 46:18Speaker 2: At Fullerton?
- 46:19Speaker 3: At Fullerton.
- 46:20Speaker 1: Man, that was the.
- 46:20Speaker 3: Last time I saw that brother. When he punched me, pow!
- 46:23Speaker 3: And he walked straight out of the gym. Now, the
- 46:26Speaker 3: coach was over there like, you, you, you, you, you, you. Yeah,
- 46:30Speaker 3: I'm like, nah, coach, he went that way. Oh, coach,
- 46:33Speaker 3: your eyes are a little crossed right now. But That
- 46:37Speaker 3: was the last time I saw that player. But, you know,
- 46:41Speaker 3: I had players like that. Guys weren't thinking on that
- 46:44Speaker 3: level of like it's only been few that I've been
- 46:48Speaker 3: on the bench with. Like Jack Vaughn is another one
- 46:50Speaker 3: that that is a great thinker of the game. And
- 46:53Speaker 3: to see him go back to Kansas now and and possibly,
- 46:57Speaker 3: you know, lead that group. It only makes sense.
- 47:01Speaker 1: I want to ask you about the Pistons because I
- 47:03Speaker 1: know Bruce Bowen well, and I know the kind of
- 47:05Speaker 1: team that Bruce Bowen going to like.
- 47:07Speaker 2: And that is a Bruce Bowen team right there. I
- 47:09Speaker 2: see you can't even sit still talking about him.
- 47:12Speaker 4: I can't.
- 47:13Speaker 3: I will say this. I'm going to go another direction.
- 47:16Speaker 3: Of course, what Bickerstaff is doing there, I love it
- 47:20Speaker 3: because he's just come in and connected with those guys.
- 47:23Speaker 3: I think when it comes to NBA, it's truly about
- 47:26Speaker 3: your connection with players. And it starts with Cade Cunningham.
- 47:31Speaker 3: I saw K when he was a sophomore in high school.
- 47:34Speaker 3: I used to work this or observe. I said work
- 47:37Speaker 3: on accident. Whoops. But the Nike league camp, man, and
- 47:41Speaker 3: he would, he would compete against all these guards. And
- 47:44Speaker 3: at that time it was Jalen green. He and Jalen
- 47:46Speaker 3: green were the one, two, one, two. And K would
- 47:50Speaker 3: come down, man, get an M one. And you know, everybody. Okay.
- 47:57Speaker 3: Get hit. He just turned around, run back on defense.
- 48:00Speaker 4: And.
- 48:01Speaker 3: I saw it in him his senior year, then I
- 48:03Speaker 3: saw it when he was at Oklahoma State. And I'm
- 48:06Speaker 3: so proud of that group because of what he has
- 48:10Speaker 3: as far as the leadership there. Detroit has always had
- 48:14Speaker 3: great leaders. Joe Dumars, Chauncey Billups. And now you enter
- 48:20Speaker 3: into the mix as players on the floor, Cade Cunningham.
- 48:25Speaker 3: You take Amir, not Amir Johnson, it's his twin.
- 48:27Speaker 2: No, you're talking about Assar. Who?
- 48:30Speaker 4: Man.
- 48:31Speaker 3: I'm like, how did you get two kids with all
- 48:34Speaker 3: that athleticism? Him going up against Jalen Brunson last year has, again,
- 48:43Speaker 3: I talked about we only learn in our failures. That
- 48:46Speaker 3: moment in time will always be in his head. And
- 48:51Speaker 3: that's only going to make him better. The big man
- 48:53Speaker 3: down low. Man, I almost want to call him Orlando
- 48:56Speaker 3: Woolridge because he looks so much like him with that zero.
- 49:01Speaker 3: You talk about enforcer, you gotta have somebody that got
- 49:05Speaker 3: your back, man. And he for sure got everybody's back.
- 49:09Speaker 3: Let him come on in here. I'll show you what
- 49:11Speaker 3: I'm gonna do to him. Well, he got guys scared
- 49:13Speaker 3: to drive the ball.
- 49:15Speaker 2: Well, and then they bring Stewart off the bench.
- 49:17Speaker 1: Like, it is amazing It is amazing that the Pistons,
- 49:20Speaker 1: this is the third incarnation of this model that they
- 49:23Speaker 1: have broken out of a team.
- 49:25Speaker 3: It works. Omani, it works for them. I can't think
- 49:30Speaker 3: of another organization other than San Antonio where you put
- 49:33Speaker 3: a centerpiece as far as a big man and you
- 49:36Speaker 3: build around it. It's the hard work. It's the lunch pail.
- 49:41Speaker 3: I'm bringing my hard hat. It's those things that work
- 49:45Speaker 3: in Detroit. You don't have Detroit as a, hey, we're
- 49:49Speaker 3: going to get up and down. We want to shoot 27,
- 49:52Speaker 3: 43s a game. No, that ends up just a bad
- 49:55Speaker 3: team in the East. We have enough of that. So
- 49:58Speaker 3: you get a team that can buy in on that
- 50:01Speaker 3: aspect of things. We're going to work hard. We're going
- 50:03Speaker 3: to do everything that we need to do with purpose.
- 50:07Speaker 3: And I love what Bigger Staff and his staff is
- 50:09Speaker 3: doing down there with that.
- 50:11Speaker 2: What do you think about your man Stewart?
- 50:15Speaker 3: Which one?
- 50:16Speaker 2: Isaiah.
- 50:17Speaker 4: Oof.
- 50:20Speaker 3: I mean, Bomani, it seems like there's always mess. But
- 50:30Speaker 3: the thing is, he got a little Ron Artest in him.
- 50:36Speaker 3: from the standpoint that it was like, hey, hey, hey,
- 50:38Speaker 3: come on back over here. Don't go over there. Don't
- 50:40Speaker 3: go over there. But he's like, nah, nah, nah.
- 50:42Speaker 2: I got to go over there. Nobody ever called the
- 50:46Speaker 2: cops on Rod.
- 50:48Speaker 1: That dude put his son's car on the cops.
- 50:54Speaker 3: So, but now I know we joke about it and
- 50:59Speaker 3: that's all it is, ladies and gentlemen. It's jokes because,
- 51:02Speaker 3: but Somebody is able to connect with him. And this
- 51:08Speaker 3: was his way to get in. And yes, you are
- 51:12Speaker 3: an enforcer as well. But let's, as they say with
- 51:19Speaker 3: deli meats, let's curate it to a point where they're
- 51:23Speaker 3: not calling the po-po. Yeah.
- 51:28Speaker 2: We got to stop there.
- 51:30Speaker 1: Because at first, I was judging that man for calling 5-0.
- 51:33Speaker 1: And then I think it was Obi-Wan who hit me
- 51:35Speaker 1: up and was like, nah, he the one that's in
- 51:37Speaker 1: this situation. Apparently, it sounded like he had been told
- 51:42Speaker 1: that it was on-site in perpetuity.
- 51:48Speaker 3: I know we come from that generation where there was
- 51:52Speaker 3: a fight, but then they let it go. I think
- 51:55Speaker 3: the worst... The worst one was Doug Christie and Rick Fox,
- 52:01Speaker 3: two light-skinned brothers.
- 52:02Speaker 2: It was beige rage. It was a lot of beige rage.
- 52:07Speaker 3: I'd never heard that word, beige rage. But I mean,
- 52:12Speaker 3: they really took that thing to another level because we
- 52:18Speaker 3: pretty boys ain't supposed to do that. But can you
- 52:21Speaker 3: imagine some of those folks that's like, yo, dog, I'm
- 52:23Speaker 3: out of the mud. I don't care about this. When
- 52:26Speaker 3: a person says they don't care or say less, that's
- 52:34Speaker 3: bad news to me. That's bad news to me. But
- 52:37Speaker 3: there was a player, he went to Wake Forest, played
- 52:44Speaker 3: with the Heat, Johnson.
- 52:46Speaker 2: James Johnson. James Johnson know Kung Fu, one of them.
- 52:50Speaker 3: Man, look at him. I would probably apologize him if
- 52:56Speaker 3: I fouled him. Hey, brother, look here. I am so sorry.
- 53:00Speaker 3: That was not intentional. The only other person I could
- 53:04Speaker 3: think of in that situation was Charles Oakley. Oak still
- 53:08Speaker 3: might smack you. I was at the Bellagio one time,
- 53:14Speaker 3: and we were on a craps table, and Oak just
- 53:16Speaker 3: got back into the Bellagio. And we gambling, and we
- 53:20Speaker 3: having a good time. Now, Oak got a bunch of
- 53:22Speaker 3: chips that he's putting on the come line. And this
- 53:27Speaker 3: is new to me. I only know Blackjack. I know
- 53:29Speaker 3: how to count to 21. Okay. So I take one
- 53:33Speaker 3: of my chips and I put it down there like, hey.
- 53:37Speaker 3: And 12 came up. So 12 pays like 30 to 1,
- 53:41Speaker 3: the odds there. And so they give Oak all his chips.
- 53:47Speaker 3: And I said, what about mine? And the guy was like,
- 53:50Speaker 3: you put it down too late. And Oak said, y'all
- 53:53Speaker 3: better pay my boy his money or else ain't nobody playing.
- 53:56Speaker 3: And I was like, they gave me my chips, Bomani.
- 54:03Speaker 3: I left. I was like, mm-mm, mm-mm. No, no, no, no.
- 54:10Speaker 3: I just, there's just a mm-mm. And he was helping
- 54:14Speaker 3: me out.
- 54:14Speaker 2: Yeah, that's about it. He scared the Jesus out of me.
- 54:17Speaker 2: That time he was helping you out.
- 54:21Speaker 3: That's the part where it's like, ooh, man, what if
- 54:24Speaker 3: he was mad?
- 54:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 54:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I will say this. You've been to Cade Cunningham.
- 54:30Speaker 1: I watched Cade Cunningham play one game in college. It
- 54:33Speaker 1: was at Oklahoma State. It was either the conference tournament.
- 54:37Speaker 2: Or it was the NCAA tournament. I can't remember which.
- 54:40Speaker 1: And what always stuck out to me was after every play,
- 54:43Speaker 1: he was the bring it in dude. And I watched
- 54:45Speaker 1: how fast all those other dudes ran to him. when
- 54:49Speaker 1: he brought it in. And I was like, oh, we
- 54:52Speaker 1: got something going on here. Like a Mike Conley type
- 54:54Speaker 1: of situation. Where I wasn't, he's a better player than
- 54:57Speaker 1: Mike Conley. At that time, I wasn't sure exactly how
- 55:00Speaker 1: good he was. Like my question for him at the
- 55:01Speaker 1: NBA was, like it was with Mike Conley. Your team
- 55:05Speaker 1: has to be a certain level of good for you
- 55:07Speaker 1: to get the Mike Conley benefits out of it.
- 55:10Speaker 2: But if y'all are sorry, Mike Conley can make you better.
- 55:12Speaker 2: But if you're good, Mike Conley can help make you
- 55:15Speaker 2: very good.
- 55:17Speaker 3: And I think that's because of all the noise surrounding
- 55:23Speaker 3: him going to Oklahoma State. Oklahoma State had hired his
- 55:26Speaker 3: brother the year before. And at least that's what I
- 55:30Speaker 3: remember in that scenario. But you cannot put a price
- 55:36Speaker 3: tag on leadership. Leadership is something that's not about the
- 55:42Speaker 3: price tag. It is who the individuals are. You brought
- 55:47Speaker 3: up a great point in Mike Conley. There are a
- 55:50Speaker 3: lot of people that felt like Mike Conley shouldn't be
- 55:53Speaker 3: in the NBA. There are people that thought less of
- 55:57Speaker 3: him because he played with Greg Oden in college, as
- 56:01Speaker 3: well as the AAU scene. But what you've been able
- 56:04Speaker 3: to see from Mike Conley was something that has always
- 56:07Speaker 3: been who he was. He's been a great leader wherever
- 56:10Speaker 3: he's been. And so when we talk about Cade, You
- 56:15Speaker 3: talk about a leader that's tough. You know, when they
- 56:19Speaker 3: played the San Antonio Spurs and he chucked Wimby, it
- 56:24Speaker 3: wasn't all like, no, ref, he ran into me. No,
- 56:27Speaker 3: he's like, yeah, I did it. And that's what you
- 56:31Speaker 3: want from your leader. But also the leader that he
- 56:34Speaker 3: hit also knocked down a three the very next play. Yeah. Yeah.
- 56:42Speaker 1: I got one last thing with you, Bruce Bowen, before
- 56:44Speaker 1: we get out of here, because we were talking about
- 56:45Speaker 1: what's going to happen with the Celtics if they bring
- 56:48Speaker 1: Jason Tatum back. And just speaking hypothetically here, if Bruce
- 56:54Speaker 1: Bowen was playing out there with Jason Tatum, would it
- 56:58Speaker 1: be the second quarter or the fourth quarter?
- 57:01Speaker 3: Oh, boy.
- 57:02Speaker 1: Not that you would kick him in the back of
- 57:03Speaker 1: the leg, but like... Just leave it in the air.
- 57:08Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? Like, like, like, like, let it,
- 57:10Speaker 2: let it, let it.
- 57:11Speaker 3: No, no, no. This, this, this is another one of
- 57:13Speaker 3: those great questions you have. You know, um, you said
- 57:19Speaker 3: if I was playing today, right today. Okay. Uh, again,
- 57:24Speaker 3: I love your work, Bomani. I mean, I think you are,
- 57:26Speaker 3: you know, it's no surprise that you are where you are. Um,
- 57:33Speaker 3: being at it's me and, and, You know, I've been
- 57:38Speaker 3: known to get close to guys. Jason Tatum, I have
- 57:43Speaker 3: a lot of respect for. And because I have a
- 57:46Speaker 3: lot of respect for him, I'm going to play hard
- 57:48Speaker 3: against him. Now, this is Bruce Bowen, 32 years old.
- 57:51Speaker 2: Okay.
- 57:52Speaker 4: Or 28.
- 57:52Speaker 3: I understand that they watching me. I understand. So, I'm
- 58:12Speaker 3: going to try and play a physical game and continue
- 58:23Speaker 3: to stress that I know that they're watching me. I
- 58:27Speaker 3: got you. I got you. I got you.
- 58:29Speaker 4: Officials!
- 58:30Speaker 3: Officials! Hey, I can do this.
- 58:34Speaker 1: I just had so many flashbacks to you and that
- 58:38Speaker 1: number 12 when you went like this.
- 58:40Speaker 2: Like if they put a statue of you in front
- 58:42Speaker 2: of the building, it's going.
- 58:43Speaker 3: To be you going just like this. Have you seen this, man?
- 58:46Speaker 3: Wearing that jersey.
- 58:47Speaker 1: You're out here looking like a mob trying.
- 58:50Speaker 2: To make a scene. What are you talking about?
- 58:52Speaker 3: Well, my answer is because officials are taught that if
- 58:58Speaker 3: they see this action, they call fouls. So if my
- 59:02Speaker 3: hands are here... In.
- 59:05Speaker 4: Boston.
- 59:10Speaker 3: I'm going to show my hands. And more importantly, Bomani,
- 59:15Speaker 3: because of the rules of the game today, Harper got
- 59:23Speaker 3: called for a flagrant one. He contested the shot and
- 59:32Speaker 3: Jalen came down next to his foot. Bruce Bowen would
- 59:37Speaker 3: be as he contests and I come down before either
- 59:41Speaker 3: running away so that they can't say that I did
- 59:44Speaker 3: something illegal. Yep.
- 59:46Speaker 1: Because it wasn't illegal where Bruce Bowen played. And then
- 59:50Speaker 1: in today's day and age.
- 59:52Speaker 3: I need to drink my tea.
- 59:53Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm just saying, man, you know, what are you saying?
- 59:57Speaker 3: Bomani?
- 59:58Speaker 2: What are you saying?
- 59:59Speaker 1: Some people got things named after him. Sometimes it's a statue.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: Sometimes it's a building. Sometimes it's a park. Sometimes it's
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: a rule. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: You know what? I told my therapist that you would
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: do this. You would do this around this time. But
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: I'm not even fazed by what you're saying, Mama. I'm
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: not even fazed by what you're saying. I just seem
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: to have a rash right now because all the forgiveness
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: that I've given you. And brother.
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: You a legend, brother. You a legend. I'm giving you
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: credit for being a legend.
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: No, no, no. See, you just pouring gasoline and alcohol at.
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: The same time on the fire. You a legend. They
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: should have named the airport after you. But instead, they
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: just decided to give you a rule.
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: Actually, though, to be fair, it's the Zaza rule. It
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: ain't even the Bruce Bowen rule. It's the Zaza rule.
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: Well, what did Zaza do?
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: Hello.
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: When it happened to me, y'all don't talk about when
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: it happened to me. See, it happened. Look, it happened
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: to me with Baron Davis. Now what? Yeah, you're right.
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: You're right.
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: You know what? We need to take that up.
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: I don't like your tone right now. No, no, no.
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: You're just doing that to comply.
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: You know what? Not as you mentioned, you're right. It's
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: the Bruce Bowen rule because they did it to you. See, see, see, see, see, see.
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: Take that compliment, Bruce Baldwin. Take that compliment.
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: That is not what I'm doing. That is not what
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: I'm doing. I know it's not.
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: I know it's not.
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: I tell you this, Bomani, I really do enjoy talking
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: to you sometimes. But it seems like it always go
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: a certain direction with you.
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: But I bring it back to love. You know what
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: I'm saying? Oh, there it is. That's my man. That
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: was just.
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: I was waiting for the chef in you to bring
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: it back. You know, you just did your marinade with me.
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: And now, you about to go burn up, I mean,
- 1:02:00Speaker 3: cook some stuff.
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: Yeah, but that is Bruce Bowen, my brother. It is
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: always a pleasure, man. I appreciate you joining us.
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: Absolutely, brother.
