- 0:01Speaker 1: The Hauraki Big Show with Jase, Mike and Keezy. Tune
- 0:04Speaker 1: in weekdays at 4 on Radio Hauraki.
- 0:07Speaker 2: The Red Hot Chili Peppers on the Hauraki Big Show
- 0:11Speaker 2: with Pugs and Mogi. And we've got our first big interview, Mogi.
- 0:15Speaker 3: This is it.
- 0:15Speaker 2: We've hit the big leagues with Aotearoa Music Royalty. We've
- 0:18Speaker 2: got the fellas straight out of West Auckland. Blind Spot
- 0:21Speaker 2: have joined us in the studio.
- 0:22Speaker 3: How are you going, boys? How are you, boys? Good
- 0:24Speaker 3: to be here. Thanks for having us. Thanks for coming in. Fellas, look,
- 0:28Speaker 3: I've got a long history with you, but this is
- 0:29Speaker 3: the first time I've chatted to you, Shelton. Damo, we
- 0:32Speaker 3: know each other a little bit in other areas. The
- 0:35Speaker 3: first time I came across you guys was I was
- 0:38Speaker 3: hitchhiking from Levin. I'd just moved back from Australia. I'd
- 0:42Speaker 3: spent about four and a half years there. Sorry about that.
- 0:46Speaker 3: And I lived in Levin, so that's why I was there.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Sorry about that as well, mate. So I was hitchhiking
- 0:52Speaker 3: back and forth from Levin to Wellington. And I was
- 0:55Speaker 3: in Ōtaki and I got picked up just outside Ōtaki
- 0:58Speaker 3: and this woman was asking me, you know, what my
- 1:02Speaker 3: background was and all this. I said, I've just moved
- 1:04Speaker 3: back from Aussie. And she goes, oh, have you heard
- 1:06Speaker 3: Blindspot before? And I said, no, this was 2003. Oh, wicked.
- 1:10Speaker 3: And I was like, no, I haven't heard it. And
- 1:12Speaker 3: so she put on Blindspot for me and we listened
- 1:15Speaker 3: to that for the duration of the ride. A hell
- 1:18Speaker 3: of a time. She was a fantastic woman. Sounds like her.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Great taste in music. A psychiatric nurse from Porirua. Strong
- 1:28Speaker 3: as an ox she was. Hell of a lover. But
- 1:34Speaker 3: 2003 is a big year for you guys. And then
- 1:37Speaker 3: the follow-up album, Just as Massive. You know, I'd love
- 1:40Speaker 3: to know what your experiences were back in those days
- 1:44Speaker 3: because that was, I came back from Aussie and New
- 1:47Speaker 3: Zealand music was just It was a good time, man.
- 1:51Speaker 3: It had just gone through the stratosphere, right? Yeah, it
- 1:52Speaker 3: was a wicked time.
- 1:53Speaker 4: It was a bit of a golden era for New
- 1:54Speaker 4: Zealand music, to be honest.
- 1:56Speaker 3: And in every single genre. Yeah.
- 1:58Speaker 4: We had some really big bands, man, doing some really
- 2:00Speaker 4: cool stuff.
- 2:01Speaker 3: I mean, our memories of that are pretty rough. Yeah.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Pretty blurry. We kind of hit it pretty hard. Sex, drugs,
- 2:07Speaker 3: rock and roll, the whole deal. Absolutely. It was good times, though,
- 2:10Speaker 3: I think. Yeah, man.
- 2:13Speaker 5: I think the one thing that I think I'm most
- 2:16Speaker 5: proud of is when you hear stories like that. regardless
- 2:19Speaker 5: of the level of truth. No, is that like we
- 2:22Speaker 5: earned the right for people to go, hey, you should
- 2:24Speaker 5: check this band out? Oh, yeah. Because I remember what
- 2:26Speaker 5: it took, man, when I found, like, listen, Fugazi and
- 2:29Speaker 5: all those old bands, I'd be like, if you found
- 2:31Speaker 5: something good, you wouldn't gatekeep, you'd share it.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Oh, 100%. It's cool to hear that, man. Yeah, and
- 2:35Speaker 3: that was through all of our sort of upbringing as well,
- 2:37Speaker 3: like through, I don't know what your guys' involvement was,
- 2:39Speaker 3: but skateboarding, there was like, there was Lagwagon and Pennywise
- 2:42Speaker 3: and there was just that skate punk sort of era
- 2:45Speaker 3: and you, if you found something, that nobody else knew about,
- 2:48Speaker 3: you couldn't wait to share it.
- 2:50Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Because, you know, it wasn't something that was being played
- 2:52Speaker 3: necessarily on the radio.
- 2:54Speaker 5: No, man, same with me for hip-hop, man. You know,
- 2:56Speaker 5: there was early days run DMC and that, but when, like,
- 3:00Speaker 5: Black Sheep turned up or Farside, like, that was that
- 3:03Speaker 5: same era for me.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:04Speaker 5: It was with Pennywise, but then there was... you know,
- 3:06Speaker 5: and Rodney Mullen skating to like, I can't remember who
- 3:09Speaker 5: it was.
- 3:10Speaker 4: You'd find a lot of songs on those old skate
- 3:12Speaker 4: vids and stuff like that. I remember Deftones coming out too,
- 3:15Speaker 4: like the first album, Adrenaline. I was like, when I
- 3:17Speaker 4: found that, I was like, what the hell? Like, it
- 3:18Speaker 4: changed my life kind of thing, you know, as cliche
- 3:20Speaker 4: as it sounds.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Exactly. And that's where you sort of found the music
- 3:23Speaker 3: as well, right, was just like there might be even
- 3:25Speaker 3: like on the skateboarding video games or anything like that.
- 3:29Speaker 3: And then you'd find that one tune and then it's like,
- 3:31Speaker 3: holy shit, these guys have got three albums out. Now
- 3:33Speaker 3: we get to go and deep dive on that.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:36Speaker 3: But those touring days must have been unreal. The big
- 3:38Speaker 3: day outs.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Yeah, man, they were cool. We played our very first one.
- 3:42Speaker 4: We got told to go on.
- 3:43Speaker 3: We opened it.
- 3:44Speaker 4: And we got told to go on stage and there.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Was no crowd in front of us. I'm like, what
- 3:47Speaker 3: do you mean?
- 3:48Speaker 4: We were like, they were still queuing outside and we started.
- 3:51Speaker 4: And then the sight to just watch them all pack
- 3:54Speaker 4: in was so cool, man.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Did you get on the Australian leagues with that as well?
- 3:57Speaker 5: No, we never did, man, which was a real bummer
- 4:00Speaker 5: because we did quite a bit of work in Aussie.
- 4:02Speaker 5: But I don't know, maybe it just wasn't right at
- 4:04Speaker 5: the time. But yeah, it would have been cool to
- 4:05Speaker 5: do some of those tours because I know Scribe got
- 4:06Speaker 5: on a few. Yeah, yeah.
- 4:09Speaker 3: And that was like with him as well same era
- 4:11Speaker 3: you guys would have been turning around with him completely
- 4:13Speaker 3: changing the face like I remember being over in Aussie
- 4:17Speaker 3: and he made Australian hip hop cool. Yeah. It was
- 4:21Speaker 3: completely unacceptable in Australia to be a hip hop artist. Yeah.
- 4:25Speaker 4: We played on Big Day Out with him as his
- 4:27Speaker 4: backing band.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Oh, really?
- 4:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:29Speaker 3: And the New Zealand Music Awards, one of the early ones.
- 4:31Speaker 5: It's on YouTube somewhere, right?
- 4:32Speaker 3: Yeah, we're trying to find that stuff. It's pretty cool.
- 4:34Speaker 4: We're doing the backing music for a couple of Scribe
- 4:36Speaker 4: tracks and stuff. So we had those relationships with all
- 4:39Speaker 4: the hip hop guys, the Decepticons and Savage and all
- 4:42Speaker 4: of that. That'll come and jump up on stage. We're
- 4:44Speaker 4: really kind of like, clicking with that kind of cross
- 4:46Speaker 4: genres and stuff.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. It's great.
- 4:48Speaker 5: It's a great time. Again, skateboarding thing, man. We're open
- 4:50Speaker 5: to all of it, you know? Yeah.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Now, fellas, you've got a new tune that you're going
- 4:54Speaker 2: to spin for us on the show today. Is there
- 4:56Speaker 2: anything you want people to know before we play it?
- 4:58Speaker 2: And then we'll come back and chat about it.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 5:01Speaker 5: I think, you know, like it's like anything, you know,
- 5:03Speaker 5: we're kind of, I guess the sort of the meaning
- 5:07Speaker 5: or the, you know, the intent behind the song is
- 5:09Speaker 5: that you know, to be in a relationship, no matter
- 5:12Speaker 5: what that relationship is, whether it's family or a girlfriend
- 5:15Speaker 5: or a wife or a partner or whatever, like, to
- 5:17Speaker 5: get somewhere good, you've got to kind of be resilient
- 5:19Speaker 5: enough to get through all those small cuts and slices
- 5:21Speaker 5: that can destroy some relationships. So I guess that's kind of,
- 5:25Speaker 5: for me, where the name of the song came from, Stitches,
- 5:28Speaker 5: is you've got to kind of sew it up and
- 5:29Speaker 5: keep going, you know?
- 5:30Speaker 6: Yeah, totally.
- 5:31Speaker 3: All right, let's give it a rip.
- 5:32Speaker 2: This is Blindspot Stitches of Radio Hauraki.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Oh, g'day, Matt. Oh, hi, mate, yeah.
- 5:39Speaker 6: Look, if you want the chance to win all our
- 5:42Speaker 6: on-air competitions and stuff and get amongst the live conversation,
- 5:47Speaker 6: tune in to the Hauraki Big Show, four to seven
- 5:51Speaker 6: weekdays on Radio Hauraki and iHeartRadio.
- 5:55Speaker 1: The Hauraki Big Show with Jase, Mike and Keezy. Tune
- 5:58Speaker 1: in weekdays at 4 on Radio Hauraki.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Tune, fellas.
- 6:04Speaker 2: That is Blindspot Stitches. It's brand new on Radio Hauraki.
- 6:07Speaker 2: You're listening to The Big Show. We've got the boys
- 6:09Speaker 2: from Blindspot in studio with us. Now, you were just
- 6:11Speaker 2: telling me that people can't buy that song right now
- 6:14Speaker 2: unless they get a ticket to your gig.
- 6:15Speaker 6: They can't listen to it.
- 6:15Speaker 3: It's not on Spotify yet.
- 6:16Speaker 4: So the only way you can hear that song is
- 6:18Speaker 4: at radio or if you buy a ticket to our
- 6:20Speaker 4: show online.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Power Station, November 7th.
- 6:23Speaker 4: We'll send you a free download of the track. And
- 6:25Speaker 4: then we're dropping it at streaming platforms October 23rd.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Fantastic. Are you doing a wider, obviously a wider tour? Look,
- 6:33Speaker 3: I'm going to get this out of the way. When's
- 6:34Speaker 3: the album? Oh, man. Come on, man. You're getting there.
- 6:37Speaker 5: We're not far off, man.
- 6:38Speaker 3: We had a session this morning. Not far off starting
- 6:40Speaker 3: or finishing?
- 6:41Speaker 5: Finishing.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Okay, good.
- 6:42Speaker 4: Six years in the making, man.
- 6:45Speaker 3: It's taken a while.
- 6:46Speaker 4: One more song to finish and then a couple more
- 6:48Speaker 4: interludes and it's wrapped up.
- 6:49Speaker 3: So we're trying. So if you need any interludes, fellas,
- 6:53Speaker 3: you know, any chat in between the songs, in the
- 6:55Speaker 3: songs like a Ben Stiller sort of thing or Flint Biscuit,
- 6:57Speaker 3: you know, just shout out. That's what we're looking for.
- 6:59Speaker 3: We can help you.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Get old Mogi on it.
- 7:01Speaker 3: It's called Volumes, isn't it, the new album? Yeah, that's right.
- 7:04Speaker 3: It will be called Volumes, yeah. That's an interesting idea
- 7:06Speaker 3: for a song as well when you're in a relationship.
- 7:09Speaker 3: And how long have you been....
- 7:12Speaker 5: You need to know this. I know we've been married
- 7:14Speaker 5: for 22 years. Holy shit.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Maybe 23.
- 7:15Speaker 5: I think we've been together like 24. And I've had
- 7:17Speaker 5: about 22 girlfriends in one year.
- 7:20Speaker 3: You're missing some zeros there. So when you were right
- 7:34Speaker 3: in the heart of things taking off, you got hitched. Yeah, yeah. Holy.
- 7:39Speaker 5: You know, and yeah, did all the things.
- 7:42Speaker 3: Far out.
- 7:43Speaker 5: Did all the things Shelton wasn't doing.
- 7:44Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. Yeah, night and day. Night and day.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Are some of those stresses from that career taking off,
- 7:49Speaker 2: some of those stitches you were talking about in the
- 7:51Speaker 2: last tune, like the little things that you have to
- 7:53Speaker 2: be able to heal from? Yeah.
- 7:55Speaker 5: Yeah, right. You know, I think it's that thing when
- 7:57Speaker 5: you're young, you– every cut is the biggest cut you've
- 8:02Speaker 5: ever had and you know it's like the world's ending
- 8:07Speaker 5: and it's all over but as I guess you know
- 8:10Speaker 5: with age and time and resilience you kind of get
- 8:13Speaker 5: to the point where you're like you get pretty thick
- 8:15Speaker 5: skinned you know and you realise that The good far
- 8:18Speaker 5: outweighs any of the bad.
- 8:19Speaker 3: And starting again is such a pain in the ass.
- 8:21Speaker 3: I mean, I've been giving this a lot of thought, but,
- 8:23Speaker 3: you know, you have to chop it all in. Who's
- 8:25Speaker 3: got the time, man? I'm moving to the bush. And
- 8:29Speaker 3: then the other thing is that on the other side
- 8:31Speaker 3: of all of that hard stuff is that you actually
- 8:34Speaker 3: get stronger and you realise that you can get through
- 8:36Speaker 3: the hard stuff. So whenever the tough stuff comes along,
- 8:39Speaker 3: it's like, well, we've sort of, you know, we've been
- 8:41Speaker 3: through this so we can get through it again.
- 8:43Speaker 5: Well, when you're younger, it feels terminal, you know.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 8:46Speaker 5: It's all over. It's all done. But if you can
- 8:48Speaker 5: kind of, you know, and probably it's a credit to
- 8:50Speaker 5: my wife's patience, probably.
- 8:51Speaker 3: How many times have you slammed a door and stomped
- 8:53Speaker 3: down a driveway there, Damo?
- 8:54Speaker 5: Oh, many, many.
- 8:55Speaker 3: I used to come and stay at my house a
- 8:56Speaker 3: few times back in the day.
- 8:58Speaker 5: Yeah, that is what I stayed at my dad's, you know.
- 9:00Speaker 5: But that's the thing. But that was, much of that
- 9:02Speaker 5: was on me, man. Oh, I know.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Not on you.
- 9:03Speaker 3: I know. But how childish you can be as well.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:06Speaker 3: And it always is. Like, my missus is, you know,
- 9:08Speaker 3: 10 years younger than me, but 20 years more mature.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:12Speaker 3: I eventually come around to a way of thinking and
- 9:14Speaker 3: it's infuriating. Yeah. But with the sound of the new album,
- 9:19Speaker 3: what I love about that single was instantly recognisable as Blindspot. Wicked.
- 9:25Speaker 3: What I kind of have an issue with, and I
- 9:26Speaker 3: respect every artist's right to mature over the period of
- 9:30Speaker 3: their lives, it's just a shame that sometimes I have
- 9:32Speaker 3: to listen to it. So an example would be the
- 9:34Speaker 3: last couple of Arctic Monkey albums.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 9:36Speaker 3: Which to me feel like they should be solo albums.
- 9:39Speaker 3: But is that something that's important to you guys or
- 9:41Speaker 3: does it just come naturally, this is what we sound like?
- 9:44Speaker 3: Or do you rope each other in?
- 9:45Speaker 4: Well, I think because there was a good break for
- 9:48Speaker 4: a while where we broke up and went off into
- 9:50Speaker 4: different things. So it kind of felt like we didn't
- 9:53Speaker 4: finish our story. So we didn't kind of sit there
- 9:56Speaker 4: and pour out all these bunch of different albums. We
- 9:58Speaker 4: went through a lot of like, I guess, almost heartbreak
- 10:01Speaker 4: as well, being away from each other and the stuff
- 10:02Speaker 4: we put.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Each other through for all of that.
- 10:04Speaker 4: So we had stuff and stories to tell through that too,
- 10:07Speaker 4: and we still are, you know what I mean?
- 10:09Speaker 3: I remember commenting on the Facebook post back in the
- 10:11Speaker 3: breakup days. I was involved, man. Yeah, yeah, there you go.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Wanted you guys to sort it out, man. It was
- 10:17Speaker 3: really sad. Yeah, yeah, totally. Well, it's awesome to have
- 10:20Speaker 3: you back together. I'm stoked that you got the single
- 10:22Speaker 3: out and on the verge of an album. Hurry up
- 10:24Speaker 3: and get it out this summer, would you? Let's go. Fellas,
- 10:27Speaker 3: thank you so much for coming in. Thanks a lot, guys.
- 10:29Speaker 2: If you want to have a hoon on that tune again,
- 10:31Speaker 2: we do have it up at horeki.co.nz. But for tickets
- 10:34Speaker 2: to your gig, I can see them at AAA Ticketing.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Is that right?
- 10:37Speaker 2: That's correct. Yeah, perfect for that show there, the release party.
- 10:41Speaker 3: Fellas, thank you again. Cheers, guys. Thanks a lot. Awesome.
- 10:43Speaker 5: Cheers.
