  [rock music] Dirty bikes arrive.
• 0:05
[rock music] Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey there now. Hey, everybody, it's- Hey, hey.
• 0:23
Oh, you know... Full Spectrum Cycling. So 290. Yeah, it's like a 190. This is the one we're, this is the one we're doing today. Wow. Seems like just a while back it was 190, like two years ago. Something like that.
• 0:38
[laughs] Like 100 shows ago, something. Oh my gosh, was it windy out there today? Oh, yes. 10 minutes. Yeah, that's an understatement. 10, 10 extra minutes to get over here.
• 0:49
But- That's how long it takes to get across that bridge... 40 some degrees versus last week's minus- It was-... 10. I saw 48 degrees today. I had the gloves off. So I don't know. The gloves are off. The gloves are off.
• 0:59
Shout out to Jake gave for giving me a ride home last week, it's... Ooh, that'd a sucked. [laughs] Oh, that'd a sucked. Oh, yeah, it was cold last week, wasn't it? Oh, Jesus. Yes, yes, yes.
• 1:07
Well, this is the winter of, mm, silly, silly weather. Malcontented weirdness. [laughs] Weirdness. Have no idea what's going on with the weather this week, month, year, day. Uh, talked to- Ah, it's pretty charming...
• 1:18
Sealy Dave, I think, today or yesterday, one of the two. 21 below up there in Hayward, Wisconsin. Ooh. Man. Put on the long johns. Overnight. Yeah. He's been doing some good stuff.
• 1:29
He's got a story up about studding stuff, boots and shoes and tires and things and stuffs. With these? Well, no. Not yet. No. Because I haven't sent them to them yet. Ah. But this is a, this is an interesting thing.
• 1:44
So these things are pedals. Here, I'll show you guys. Ooh, those look like pedals, and they even say pedals on them. And they are called Inverse. Can you guess why they are called Inverse? They're not cleated?
• 1:56
They have no pointy things to whack your shins with. Oh. Whoa, that's a big pedal. Oh. Well- Yeah, yeah, that's like- Remember those big pedals you tested out a long time ago? No, I, I still have them on the low side.
• 2:08
Yeah, those things were, like, extra this way though. Yeah, they're rectangle. Oh, I kinda like these. Yeah, me too. So I, uh- Yeah, mine are thin. Well, about the same.
• 2:15
This, this is from a company called Nine Point8 up in Canada. Eh. Eh. Uh, and the deal is that... You can add your own studs? [laughs] You stud your shoes. Oh.
• 2:28
Not the pedal, so then you don't get your shit messed up by whacking your shins with the pedal. Yeah, but then how do you walk with your shoes on? Like a duck. Poorly. Mostly. I don't know. I suppose.
• 2:40
Also, they have these things. Little cleaty things.
• 2:44
Which originally I thought was a really super cool idea, 'cause I thought they clicked into the SPD, but these just replace your SPD cleat with- And give you little study cleats... with, with little studs. Gotcha. Yeah.
• 2:57
Well, no, the- It's got some girth to it... the one I have on the low side- That it also- They have, they have the little, uh, the little, uh, pegs- Yes... in it.
• 3:07
So w- I've no- when I ride, depending on the shoe I'm wearing, I can f- like, feel- Push down and feel it?... feel it. Yeah. Do, do a rever- you know, like, without putting too much tension one way or the other.
• 3:18
It's like, "Oh, no, you, you're, you're in there." That's cool. That's cool. Yeah. So- Like, like a very passive clip in. Right. You know?
• 3:24
And, and th- that's the same thing with my favorite pedal, until I'm gonna try these out, is the VP Aim, because it has, it has- Is it the, like, concave one? Yeah, exactly. Yeah. That's, that's a neat pedal.
• 3:35
It seems like it has a little dip. It does have a little concaveness. Unless it's an optical illusion. But, but- No, and I did, I did s- I did test them on the bottom of my...
• 3:44
Obviously, I haven't mounted them on a bike yet, but, uh- But, but Greg- We, we-... when I add them to my carbon fiber bike, it's going to double the weight. Shut up, you. [laughs] Uh, I just thought it was a good idea.
• 3:55
I mean, I don't care about heavy pedals, but these are heavy and I- And you know-... like these a lot...
• 3:59
so Dave, um, has been, uh, well, he was testing a bunch of different systems, from the just pull it on over your shoe, to s- like Icebugs, and there's a couple other shoes, and one of them even has, like, a flip-out cleat on the heel that you can flip it back in then when you go inside so you don't have, you know- Interesting.
• 4:21
Like you flex-... like if you had a, like a really nice hardwood floor. Right. Exactly. So I'm, I'm... You know, it's always been a thing with, like, I've got...
• 4:28
I don't know, they're probably 10 years old now, the Keen, uh, Summit County boots.
• 4:33
I have, I have studs in the bottom of the boots, which are very similar to these, and they work great to keep you from falling down on the ice. Mm-hmm.
• 4:42
Uh, just have to remember they're on your feet when you go in the house, or the bar, or the post office, 'cause they are super slippery on a granite floor, I will tell you that much. [laughs] I'll bet.
• 4:55
So I'm looking forward to trying these, and, uh, I'm gonna use those same Summit Counties, I think, 'cause they already have a couple studs in them.
• 5:02
I just kinda went perimeter on those, just for traction, and this is gonna be, like, more- Yeah... ball of the foot because of the pedal. But I'm... You know, you can use them without the studs, and they are- Oh, yeah...
• 5:13
and they're pretty s- Totally... and they're sticky. The durometer, that's a technical term for how sticky the rubber is. How sticky they are. Uh, it, it's fairly s- Shit. Now you're just making up words...
• 5:22
it's fairly stu- it's fairly, uh, soft. Very derp, derp. May I open this to look at this? Yeah, go ahead. Uh, he s- he sent us some stuff. I'm, I'm g- This is for fatbike.com too, by the way. [laughs] It's...
• 5:33
I'm just kinda wheezing off the fatbike.com juice right now. Wheezing off the juice. Uh, I'll tell you later about fatbike.com wonderfulness, uh, I got coming for- Okay, this is even cooler. Look at this.
• 5:44
It comes in its own little container. Oh, those are the studs. Yeah. Wow. Right on. Um- And watch, here they go, pew. Yeah. [laughs] They're gonna be all over the floor.
• 5:53
And then you're walking around before you go to bed at night and you, y- you stub your toe on the dang old stud, right? So when you had that blue thing in your hand before, that's what goes on there.
• 6:03
The handle Oh, okay... that you thought was a pipe. Well, I saw it in the picture. [laughs] I didn't think it was a pipe, but- Yes, you did, too. I did say it looked a little- Tony's conc- Oh, look at this...
• 6:14
Tony's concentrating super hard on that. This is really a neat idea. Look at that setup. Yeah. And then you wind them into the, the bolt head. Right. Like a corkscrew.
• 6:22
I mean, it is similar to a grip stud in a way, which are what's on my, uh, Keens. But, uh, hey, guess what? Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, I got a button to push over here. Oh, I like these. Pushing my button.
• 6:33
I'm pushing somebody's button. Hey, welcome to the radio program caller. Who do we have- Woo... on the line? Hi, uh, this is Mark Peterson from Ogden, Utah. Whoa. There's Mark Peterson from Ogden, Utah.
• 6:45
So Mark Peterson, we were just talking about these new pedals that, uh, these guys at 9.8.ca would be the correct website to go to. You gotta check them out. Hey.
• 6:56
They have flipped the script on where you put studs so that you don't- It's kinda genius... so you don't whack your shin with your freaking, you know, pointy, study pedal thing.
• 7:07
The studs go on the bottom of your shoe if you wanna use them, or you just use the pedal. It's a flat pedal, too. Well, it's tradition to smash your shins up with your pedals.
• 7:15
Well, a- and you just have to look at my shins or, uh, maybe Tony's shins or- My shins are pretty beat up... so, so, who's got the- Everybody has the Jaws- Or Ken... has the Jaws moment.
• 7:24
Uh, yes, let's get better our shins. All right. This is genius. Is this not a rite of passage of some sort? Yeah. Well, you, you know who's got the most bashed up shins I've ever seen? Drink to our legs. I, I- Zito...
• 7:33
drink to our legs. He's got bashed up shins. How are your shins, Mark? Are your shins bashed up a little bit? Oh, they're destroyed. I was a skater- [laughs]... in the '80s and, uh, the mountain biking.
• 7:45
Between those two things, my shins are just hamburger. Yep. Yeah. Between that and my knee, I've got like three knee caps on my left knee.
• 7:51
So why, so why have we been torturing ourselves for so long when these guys had this idea in their back pocket the whole time? That, that's genius. [laughs] Are they expensive? I don't know. I don't know.
• 8:00
Maybe it's just progress- Uh, I think the pedals retail for 69 bucks... and that's just technology... which isn't bad. And then, you know, the, the studs, I don't know.
• 8:06
I don't have all the MSRPs yet, but these will be on fatbike.com in a day or two, 'cause I gotta do a... And make sure you don't wreck any shit when you put that back together. Yeah.
• 8:16
'Cause I still have to do an unboxing video of these. Yeah. Come on now. I only have- Do it like a professional... I only have three other pairs to mess with, [laughs] so.
• 8:24
If one of you clowns wants to do a review on these things too, I would be happy to lay some pedals upon you, but you have to write some words. You can't just profile around with them. Right.
• 8:35
Why are you looking right at me? [laughs] Tony, do not steal those. Steal what, Greg? That- Slow and steady won the race. It only took a couple years.
• 8:45
[laughs] Well, you know, to do a, to do an extensive review, you do need to, uh- Yeah. These are, this is, this is a genius idea. [laughs] I wanna try them without the studs first. I do, too. Totally.
• 8:55
And then just, you know, go from there. Um, hey, anyway- Hello... welcome to the program, Mark. How's it going out there in Ogden, Utah? Oh, um, uh, highs and lows, ups and downs. You know, gutters and strikes. Well.
• 9:10
[laughs] So- How you feeling? Let me, let me tell you a little quick bowling story, if you like. Right. Gutters and strikes, stripes, strikes. I got a bowling story for you.
• 9:19
Uh, the high school I went to had, I think, six or eight bowling lanes, maybe, from the '30s. They were as old. You had a high school with bowling alleys? Shorewood, dude. Yeah. Still had- That's cool.
• 9:30
They still have bowling alleys- Wow... at Shorewood. Really? I'm asking Cleon. Well, here's the trick, though. If you get a 7-10 split and you're on the right alley, you just- Hands down...
• 9:40
you just wing that sucker down the gutter and it'll pop out right at the end, and you can get it every single time. Nice. [laughs] Wow. Uh, yeah, I don't think that's actually American Bowling Congress approved, but
• 9:53
potentially. I have no idea. Now it's the- Yeah, probably not. Probably not. Now it's the- How, how have you guys been doing? It's the press briefing room for Shorewood...
• 10:00
have you guys been staying healthy or have, have you guys been getting sick? Uh, those two clowns on the other side of the table had the plague a couple times or once or twice or something.
• 10:05
Yeah, I had it like two weekends in a row- I, I, I've been-... which was weird. Oh man, I lost so much weight. My self-induced sickness is only from having more beer than I need to. Oh, no.
• 10:12
No, I- I didn't have enough whiskey. I think that was the- Fair enough... the problem. Could have been. No, I- I mean, there's a... I mean, yeah, it's, you know, playing with mercury.
• 10:21
But I mean, it's like you just need enough just to fend off the plague. Yeah. No, there's something going on. Oh, yeah. It's pretty brutal. I say it because everyone around here has just been getting sick like crazy.
• 10:32
Like, everyone I know has just been catching the flu- Mm... a cold, one thing after another, and that kind of leads into some of my news about myself.
• 10:40
I found out I have an autoimmune disease, I just don't know which one. It might be lupus. That's what they're aiming at. Ooh. Wow. No kidding. Yeah, we know you've been struggling with a few things- Yeah, yeah. I-...
• 10:50
in Ogden, so. Well, I've struggled with things since I was in my, um, late 20s, early 30s, and I didn't know, ever know why.
• 10:59
Uh, people just always thought, like, "Dude, you get sick way too often," and I even told myself, "Dude, you're sick way too often. You've gotta be a hypochondriac." But no. [laughs] Right, right, right.
• 11:08
I found out I have an autoimmune disease. Uh, well, I hope they get that- And, um, so like-... figured out, because that, that would suck...
• 11:14
I told you I had some, well, I told you I had some big news that I wanted to share, um, with everyone, and it's official. Fatbike, uh, Films is done. It's over. Oh. I've sold the website. I'm going to shut down the page.
• 11:29
It never, ever developed into anything, and if it decides to develop into something in the future, then I'll name it something else. Yeah. Fair enough. Like, like markmakesmovies.com. M, M, M. Triple M. Yeah. Yeah.
• 11:41
Something like that. Like, here's some more bike stuff. Well, I, I mean, you do know that I, I reacquired, or actually not reacquired 'cause I always had it, fatbike.com. So we're, we're doing...
• 11:54
I don't know if you've been to the site lately, but we're doing a lot of good stuff over there again. Uh, and not just, uh, you know- I'm looking at the site right now. That, that trike on there is pretty awesome.
• 12:03
It got stolen? Have you had any word? Yeah. What's the deal? Ah, it's James'. Yeah. Unfortunate, but true. They stole the trike, too? They stole the trike, too. Yeah. [laughs] Just, the, the guy- Oh...
• 12:15
so he had his, uh, he had his Schlick Ape stolen after the River West 24, so six months later, the other, the... That was a pretty cool project bike. Um, so- [laughs] Yeah...
• 12:26
so we got, we got that trike from a guy- When it boing-oing-oinged- Yeah... boing-oing-oinged when I- So-... rode it. Well- [laughs] I was like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait a minute." Right.
• 12:33
We, we got that trike from a guy that wanted it to be, like, a rolling billboard for his restaurant. We did a bunch of work on it. We put the, you know, the fat rims and tires and all that stuff on it.
• 12:44
We had it powder-coated professionally, blah, blah, blah. And then we were just testing it inside the shop here, which, I mean, it's a pretty good size building, so you could ride up and down the- Yeah...
• 12:54
hallway and stuff with it. And it just kept getting, like, this- Sure... the, the head tube angle kept getting slacker and slacker. [laughs] Yeah. And we're like, "That's not right." Oh, no. Boing-oing-oing.
• 13:05
So it- Boing-oing-oing. So, yeah, it was kind of on the back burner for quite a while, and James came up with a, like, a- Is that why there's a shackle between the seat tube- Exactly... and the down tube? Right, yeah.
• 13:14
Is that why there's a shackle in the picture? Yeah. Yeah. That, that would take care of that issue- [laughs]... of it folding up on itself into a little compact [laughs] little box. A fold- A non-folding folding bike.
• 13:23
Yeah, yeah. [laughs] Who knew you had- Oh, my God... a folding trike? Yeah, totally. [laughs] Who would've thunk such a thing? Um, but yeah, so that's something that there's only one of those.
• 13:31
It has a Tom Teasdale fork on the front of it. You know, there's, nobody else has one of those bikes. Wow. So if that thing's anywhere in this country,
• 13:39
somebody ought to see it and say- Well- Probably in the Milwaukee River... stop it. Yeah. Why do you say words that are hurtful? 'Cause that's probably where my North Pine is, too.
• 13:49
C- can you imagine that thing with an e-bike motor on it? Yeah. [laughs] Yes. How much fun it would be to roll around on that with the assist on it? And, and- Oh, that'd be fun...
• 13:58
I did, I did have a guy that bought, I th- I think he bought a, uh, Bafang, like, the 250-watt hub motor for a trike, and he had, and he had made, like, gears and stuff for it to work.
• 14:11
And I never saw if he finished the project- Hmm... 'cause he was a DIY guy. But yes, I could see that with a motor. So he was gonna run it as a mid-drive?
• 14:18
He was gonna ru- he was gonna run it as a hub motor for the- In-... back wheels- Yep, in the middle with a diff... but it would be with a diff, yeah. Not- Yeah... built into the wheel.
• 14:27
It's an interesting idea, and it's, theoretically, it seems like it would work fine. It would, I don't know. But- Yeah. If, if, if you ever got it finished, I'd like to see it.
• 14:33
But you could also just throw a front hub on it and call it done. Yeah, right. Why, why, why- Right... make things harder than they need to be? Right. Exactly. Oh, gosh.
• 14:45
Hey- Um- Do you wanna, do you wanna- I, I, thank you guys. How are you guys doing? Uh... How is everyone in the room feeling? How are, how's your lives? How are you? We're, it's, it's finally warm.
• 14:54
The weather, the weather got [sighs] better, 40s. Got into the 40s. There's no fucking snow here. And I'm enjoying the 40s. We don't have any snow either, dude. Yeah. No fucking snow.
• 15:04
But it's just been cold and dreary- Oh, it's been below, like, 10 below in windchill... and just, it hits, it hits, it hits the vibes. So I'm feeling a little better today.
• 15:13
Yeah, it was 48 degrees according to the automobile I was driving today- Yeah. [laughs] Right, yeah... not the bike I was riding. I was able to get over a bridge.
• 15:19
A lot, it was windy as hell, but I was able to, well, I had to take my gloves off for a different reason, and I was like, "You know what? I'm gonna keep my gloves off." Yeah, it was nice. It is, today is nice.
• 15:28
This'll be the first time I've been able to ride without my gloves on me in- Since fall... months, months, months. Yep. Yeah. So. We've had really weird weather. So do you guys like pogies or gloves? Uh, yes.
• 15:41
Are you gloves or pogies? Yeah, sometimes a combo- Yes... platter. I'm, I'm just gloves. Yeah, I, depends on the weather. I'm, I'm pogies and gloves or straight, I swear by pogies. Um, I don't- I swear at them.
• 15:52
[laughs] On- once you've, once you've ridden, like, 10 miles with pogies on in relatively bad weather, you won't look back. Yeah. I think I still have a couple pairs that I've just...
• 16:02
It's easier- I almost, I almost had-... it's easier to put gloves on.
• 16:05
I- I agree, but when you have a bike with pogies on and you grab it, and then you have gloves to boot, oh, God, it's like the most comfortable riding ever. Are you saying a boot? I did not say a boot. I said to boot.
• 16:16
[laughs] It's tonyberger.ca. I am now. Yeah, right? Totally. I am now. [laughs] You have davelunds.com and tonyberger.ca.
• 16:24
I, I, I see where you're coming from because I would like to set up, I think I'm g- I will set something up on my bike that always has my layers- Right... in the bag because I don't wanna wear a backpack necessarily, but
• 16:39
I wanna have some layers because I don't wanna overheat, don't wanna underheat, don't wanna be cold. Right.
• 16:44
And also- To be honest with you, that's exactly what I've done over the years, is, is I've made a kit for each one of my bikes. There's a tool bag for each one of my bikes. Yeah.
• 16:52
So I'm not switching tool kits from bike to bike. Right. That one- They've always got the tools... definitely, 100%. They've always got a spare tire, and I've always got the spare clothing inside of the bike bag on them.
• 17:00
That's a good call because I do d- I do the- But the-... I do the tube and tool thing, for sure, especially on the Omnium that has a 20-inch front wheel and a 700C rear wheel, so- [laughs]...
• 17:09
you know, you gotta carry your stuff with you. Yeah. But, um, I haven't done it with the clothing yet, and I think that's a mistake, and I'm gonna rectify that situation. That's your New Year's- Yeah. Yeah... revolution?
• 17:19
I don't know what that even means. It's funny you should say that because I don't have tires for the
• 17:27
Electra- or the Xtracycle, and I do need to carry a spare tire and couple of tubes 'cause I got a 20 rear and a 26 front. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Hey, how do you, how do you like your Xtracycle?
• 17:39
I've known a couple people with them, and they swear by them. They're like, "They're, they're the best."
• 17:42
Um, well, I've had two Free Radicals, which is the kit that you add onto the back of a bike, and I have switched it over to probably- Bikes... six bikes.
• 17:52
Um, but I, you know, uh, I'll go back to someone stole my cheap Chinese electric cargo bike, and I was so pissed because they got my nice ostrich saddle, and they got my nice Moloko handlebars. Oh.
• 18:09
But I got- Lame... this Electra- I got this Xtracycle EdgeRunner For 400 bucks [laughs] Yeah, it was like a steal, for sure... and Greg and I took it apart, and it, the bottom bracket grease was brand new.
• 18:23
Um, we added a Bafang 750 mid-drive to it, and I, it's one of the nicest bikes I've ever owned. I rode it to Sheboygan and back, which is 80 miles- Awesome... um, with the e-assist. It was absolutely stunning.
• 18:39
Um, it's a great, it's a great grocery getter. Um, it's a car replacement all day long. Yeah. That's- I mean, exact- I'm, I'm sure that- Exactly...
• 18:48
I'm sure that's why the original owner bought it, too, but then they didn't go the- Right... extra mile to actually replace the car. [laughs] Well, they left the car seat on the back. [laughs] The baby seat.
• 18:56
He, yeah, it was covered in cobwebs. [laughs] Mark, you'd have loved it. I show up at the guy's place. He's got, he's asking 500 bucks for it. He knows it retails for 2,200 bucks.
• 19:07
I show up, it's covered in cobwebs and both tires are flat. He doesn't know how to put air in the tires. [laughs] That's when I realized, "Okay, clearly this bike isn't stolen."
• 19:18
So I put air in the tires for him, and I took it for a ride. He wanted 500 bucks. I pull $500 out of my pocket. He's like, "Well, how about you just give me four?" [laughs] I'm like, "500 is like-" What? "...
• 19:30
totally stealing this bike." Yeah. But okay. Right. The, don't tell the guy what- Right... he wants to save 400. It's, you know, hydraulic discs. Yeah, don't mess with his chi, dude. Right. You know, eh.
• 19:39
Hydraulic discs, one by nine drivetrain. Uh, it, it's a fantastic ride. It's stable as the day is long. Yeah, it, it was, it's, it's...
• 19:49
Yeah, my, it sucks somebody stole my bike and I'd like to kick them in the nuts really hard, but- Well, there's a lot of people you want to kick in the nuts, I'm sure...
• 19:55
but at the end of the day, I made out really well on this. I just really miss my Selle Anatomica ostrich saddle. Awesome, awesome. You just, yeah, your ostrich saddle. [laughs] That ostrich saddle was badass cool.
• 20:07
I know, you're like, h- when we s- [laughs] when we were with JP last week at the swap, I'm like, "Do you have any more of those ostrich saddles?" [laughs] Has it, has it rebalanced the universe between the two?
• 20:14
What's that? Has there, has it rebalanced the universe between the two? Yeah, absolutely. [laughs] Absolutely, and I do have other Selle Anatomicas- Awesome. Awesome... they're just not ostrich.
• 20:24
And it is a, it, it is just an inc- for, for an 80-mile ride, it was like zero fatigue. You know, I'm like, I got off it, I went into the pool- Awesome... and hung out with my kid.
• 20:35
You know, it's like, this is pretty cool. That's awesome. Yeah. Yeah. After an 80-mile ride, you know, uphill- Awesome... a little bit. All right. Mark, you know what's going on with us. What's going on with you?
• 20:44
I know besides Fat Bike Films is officially not official anymore, uh- Done. It's just done. It's done... I, I've seen, I've seen, uh, well, I've seen a couple of your recent videos.
• 20:53
You are kind of refurbing the fleet or just- Yeah... kind of tuning up the, the bikes that you already own, seems like.
• 21:02
Well, I, I do a yearly tune-up on all my bikes and I try to go through them, 'cause what, what good is a bike if you can't ride it? Mm-hmm.
• 21:07
Like, if it's just like beat up or anything, or if you're selling them, someone shows up to buy it- [laughs]... and it's flat, doesn't work right- Uh-huh... covered in cobwebs, you know what I mean? [laughs] Right.
• 21:17
400 bucks. And then you get 400 bucks for it instead [laughs] instead of the 2,200 that you should. Exactly. Oh, man. Exactly. Exactly.
• 21:25
[laughs] So what, what I'm currently right now, I'm, I'm doing is, uh, I'm, I'm, I've got one tune that's in the stand right now that I'm working on that is a, a paying client, but the, the rest of the time, I, I need to be making content, and I'm learning about making content m- a lot better as I go forward.
• 21:42
And so I just decided, well, if I'm gonna be selling all my bikes or some of my bikes or a majority of my bikes or pieces off my bikes, I might as well document them before I take them apart or sell them.
• 21:51
That makes good sense. Mm-hmm. So I'm going through and doing a, a, a short video segment on each and every one of them. Um, I think I've done about four so far, and I've got 33 more to go. [laughs] Okay.
• 22:06
So you have almost a whole year's worth of content right there. Well, I mean, it's, it's just a lot of years' worth of work. I put so much effort- Yeah... into these bikes, and you guys- Right...
• 22:16
know what I'm talking about when you put a ton of effort into a bike, and then it seems like you're the only one that appreciates it or you and a couple of your bros. Yeah. Well- Have, have I got a story for you. So
• 22:27
I, my winter beater- Tell me... my winter beater is a Stumpjumper ProComp, and I got a- Is that the Metal Matrix Mix? It is the Metal Matrix Mix. Metal Matrix? Yes. '90s Special? What year is that one? What year?
• 22:39
Uh, '97, I believe. '97, okay. So it- Oh, wow... I, I, years ago, converted it to a SRAM X9 one nine, one, one by nine drivetrain.
• 22:52
And those of you that know me know that I absolutely detest rear derailleurs. I'm just no good at them. I just, I, you know.
• 23:01
So last week, in the bitter cold, I'm riding this Stumpjumper to and from work because there's salt everywhere, and it's got a studded front and a studless snow rear, and it just starts skipping gears like no tomorrow.
• 23:15
Mm. I mean, just, I, and I hate the X9. Do you store it in the house? I do. Do you think maybe that the water inside the housing- Yes... melted, and then it went ice- And then, yep, and-... in there... and then it froze.
• 23:27
Yeah. So- That's what happened... on Saturday morning, I got up and I'm like, "You know, fuck this. I'm gonna make this bike work." And as much as I hate derailleurs and they hate me, something aligned,
• 23:43
and this bike shifts all nine gears like motherfucking butter. Well- I'm like, I'm absolutely stunned... like a big stick of butter. That's how they're supposed to work, Tony.
• 23:51
I know that, but I had to fill with- All it is is a spring... I fill with the cable. It's just a spring. Wing, wing, wing, wing. I put Fillmore Tenacious Oil- Wham, wham, wham...
• 24:00
on the, on the last part of the cable- Feel the best... so it slid well. I like slid well on a winter marble. That's so common. What I hate about, what I- Speaking of sliding well.
• 24:07
Yeah, uh, what I hate, uh, most [bell rings] about that bike is- One hour... where the connector is- [laughs] Dump bail... for that bolt. On the derailleur? It's hidden. Yeah. It's like hidden underneath. Ah.
• 24:17
It's a pain in the ass, but I'm really happy to say the last few days riding this bike, it's been like a, a, a breath of fresh air....
• 24:25
butt of [laughs] breath of fresh butter- Well, I got a, I got a short comment for you, 'cause I, I, I know that you hate derailleurs, and so I'm gonna bring a little old-school tech in to get rid of your hate of derailleurs.
• 24:36
[laughs] If you are friction shifting, you can trim that shit right- That I can do... up right. I can do that all day long, dude. It's perfect. I love friction. That's a piece of cake.
• 24:44
You- All you do is adjust the high and low- You could-... and you're good. We need to, we need Tony to tell us what beer- Yep... we're drinking here- Oh, yeah... 'cause we're at the top of the hill.
• 24:51
We hit the top of the hill here. Um- Um, and I was at- [laughs] I, I was doing a Costco run yesterday, and I survived for under $300. Oh. Um- Yeah...
• 25:01
not much, but close If you're gonna drive all the way out there- There you go... you might as well spend it. There you go. Right. So finally, our Costco- Get a pound of mayonnaise... right.
• 25:09
Um, finally, or- [laughs] Or in my case- Which does last more than a beer- Three-... in the fridge up there. [laughs] Yeah. O- or my case, three pounds of yogurt. Um, but I got the- Nice...
• 25:19
Kirkland Helles-style lager, which is actually a Deschutes. It's 4.5%. It's- Pretty tasty... it's absolutely delicious for- It is pretty tasty. Yeah... I, it was either $11.00 a 12-pack- Really?... or $13.
• 25:36
I can't remember what it was- Mm... but it was cheap. Yeah, yeah, a buck a beer, essentially. Right. Yeah. And I'm willing to, I, I- Is Kirkland something that's only, like a-... my regret is only buying 12. What's that?
• 25:45
Is Kirkland something that's only, I think, on the w- on the East Coast, like back East? No. No, it's a Costco thing. Kirk- Kirkland is a Costco brand. Yeah. Yeah. Okay, got it.
• 25:53
If you got Costcos there in the old, uh, Ogden area, the greater Salt Lake, uh, Basin, you will have Kirkland. But not every Costco carries every product. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. So yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
• 26:07
I believe you bought- It's like an Aldi, Trader Joe thing. But again, I feel- It's a dynamic of things... they had a pallet of this, and I got a 12-pack. [laughs] And I'm like, "Mm."
• 26:13
You just had the forklift put it in your cart. [laughs] Well, I didn't even know, I, well, I, I didn't realize it did have, like, Kirkland, like the- And then Deschutes though too, the big Deschutes lo- Well-... logo.
• 26:23
[laughs] Big. Big, no. Oh, on the 12-pack- Good enough... 12-pack itself, it's big Well- No, it's almost like a Dale's Pack It In. Right? Pack It In, yep. 12-pack.
• 26:31
Oh, does it have the, does it have the pipe- It doesn't... the pipe- No, it doesn't, almost... the pipey point? Eh, it's close enough. But it's a very drinkable, easy drinking 4.5. Easy drinking. Easy.
• 26:41
But in, in big letters, lager. Don't say it. So it's trying to be as- It's been twice... generic as possible. What? And I said the K-word. You said the fir- I- So- First name was said twice. Zeeto? And nope. No.
• 26:53
And the last name was said twice. Thank God. So we're- Oh... really on the razor's edge. Oh, yeah, I forgot about the shoes. All right. He had. I was like, "Dude, stop it." Oh.
• 27:01
Hey, here's something I wanna mention real quick. [laughs] 'Cause I had a bunch of show notes, and we didn't talk about any one of them yet, except maybe, nope, those weren't even on the...
• 27:08
Those pedals are badass though, 9.8.ca. Anyway, uh, there's a mustache competition and beard competition coming up at the old Uptowner here in a couple of weeks. I think that would be- Wait, what?...
• 27:20
a month and a half-ish. Yeah, we got six weeks to go full beard. Yeah. Nice. Or whatever. Yeah. Uh- I can pull it off... the first y- I- The first year I did it, I got a third place.
• 27:30
The next year, I was like, "I'm gonna fucking nail it." Nothing. [laughs] Just nothing. But- Nothing. I, I had facial hair. I know, more than my core muscle. Did you, did you wax on it? Did you wax it?
• 27:42
Well, uh, y- you can, yeah, you can do whatever you want, I guess, pretty much. Uh, I didn't have a stylist the second time. [laughs] You gotta wax it into some cool style or something. Yeah. Beards.
• 27:49
But you actually have to, you have to do a, a runway walk. Yeah, you have to kind of do a, sort of a- It's a performative art thing too... right.
• 27:56
It's like, if you don't look like a lumberjack, go fuck yourself, uh- [laughs] You know? Kind of, yeah. And, and get your handlebars away from me. But you wearing a plaid shirt.
• 28:03
I'm certainly not gonna do a handlebar mustache. That's just stupid. Well, yeah. What? What, what I, well, I did the monkey tail- Yeah... all the way up, and so- JK did the monkey tail. That was pretty good...
• 28:14
and into the hairline. And dun-dun-dun-dun-dun. So they created the What the Fuck category. Which you won. Which I just won. Obviously.
• 28:22
[laughs] Yeah, 'cause that was the only, the only year they ever had the category, and I won, just 'cause they had- All right... they had the color printer right there just to do it. Okay.
• 28:30
And- Mark, I gotta ask you a question here. Here it comes. Have you been, uh, doing any- Sure... anything, are you doing anything on the Blue Sky thing yet?
• 28:38
Have you gotten your social media, you know, grip on Blue Sky yet? I am working on transferring over, because I think I wanna go Blue Sky.
• 28:50
I have been avoiding Facebook and kind of YouTube in a lot of ways because of, you guys know why. Yeah, of course. Mm-hmm.
• 28:56
But, um, I want, I've heard people say they're going to Blue Sky because it's, it's not gonna be the way it was under Zuckerberg or whoever the Ningleberry that is. Dingolf, Dingolf Ritz. [laughs] Made it.
• 29:07
And, um, yeah, yeah. And so, yeah, I, I'm going that direction. That's my plan. Um, I'm still going to keep my feet in YouTube and Facebook.
• 29:19
Obviously, YouTube's a long-term thing, but Facebook is, it's been there for a long time. I'm just not nearly as active in it as I used to be. I just- Yep...
• 29:26
kinda got tired of the idea that these guys are making money off of me somehow. Off of your, off your creativity, your content, your, you know.
• 29:36
It's like, yeah, why are you giving them all your intellectual property, dude? Right. Uh, and, and that's where- Yeah... so, so I just checked today.
• 29:44
I think within the next couple of days, if it isn't already happened, Blue Sky will have 30 million users. Wow. And it's growing at- Wow... right now, it's growing at about two new users per second.
• 29:56
So it's m- ramping up pretty quick. The bots are active. Yeah. Well, there are no- Well... well, there are- Blue Skynet is ready. There, there may be bots, but they're not, they are actively not promoting that.
• 30:07
They, there's no advertising on it yet. And I've been, I've been watching a lot of stuff with the, both the COO and the CEO of Blue Sky. Both women, both very smart. Both want to make this a,
• 30:21
a very friendly place, not a- Vitriol... yeah. It's, we're not gonna- Interesting... have any of that crap. They'll hate feed? Well, so here's the deal with it, though. If you wanna control your feed, you can.
• 30:34
You can block any- Any hashtag, you can block any word, you can do anything you want, or you can make a collection of all the things you love and make a feed.
• 30:44
Like, I made one for fatbike.com because, well, we wanna be on there. Right. And it's, it's, you know- Right...
• 30:51
it's, it's small because there's not a ton of people on there yet, but over time that will be all people that are into fat biking, you know? So it's just, um- Exactly. Exactly... you can, you can control your,
• 31:03
uh, how you consume your- Media, yeah... media. Yeah. So, uh, yeah. So we'll- So Ben, do you remember when you were out here in Utah? I d- Barely... you know, you know how much I love Utah, dude.
• 31:15
Uh, uh- You know my family is, it, my family- Oh, yeah, I got that. Wait a minute. That's my damn state. I for- I, I for- [laughs] I forget what movie it was, but by God damn it, I am New Mexico.
• 31:25
I didn't, I didn't want to buy your costume. No, I am Utah, mother... [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] So- [laughs] You make me piss sometimes... what, what I'm saying is, is when you were out here- [laughs]...
• 31:34
the last time I physically saw you, you told me that the, the up and coming platform was gonna be Twitter. Yeah. Well, I wasn't- You were like, "Oh, everyone's going to Twitter."
• 31:42
Okay, so I wasn't wrong until- You were talking about how Twitter's gonna be everything. I wasn't- Until you became a twat. Yeah. And I wasn't wrong until Musk bought it. It was- [laughs]... a pretty good thing.
• 31:51
Um, so I'm, I'm on the Bluesky thing. And, uh, also Pixel Fed. If you wanna get rid of Instagram because same Zuckerberg bullshit, uh, Pixel Fed, although much- Right...
• 32:02
much earlier in its development and not super stable and blah, blah, blah, because so many people wanna go to it- Yeah... but that is basically... So it's like Bluesky, Pixel Fed, YouTube. What else do you need?
• 32:16
And the only reason that I would keep, uh, Facebook is for event stuff. Right. Because it's still a good- Yeah... platform to- And Marketplace... and Marketplace. Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
• 32:27
And I've got a couple of years- But definitely for event, for, like, music event. Yeah. It, it just... I mean- But also, like, if we put an event on, it's a perfect place to put it- Yeah... still.
• 32:35
Speaking of events, didn't I have something on here, uh, Facebook? Oh, yeah, the mustache thing. Yeah. Uh, also, there's also punk rocking at Sabbatic and more punk rocking at Vegas, so there's stuff happening. Ah, okay.
• 32:44
And there's punk rock, uh, um, rummage sale at Polish Falcons. Oh, yeah. That's always good. Really? Oh, that's way better than X Rare Cake- That's coming up really soon... 'cause that's, like, so far away. Right.
• 32:54
I don't wanna go all the way out there. No, yeah. Wendy does a cool job. It's the 7th, 8th? The 8th maybe? Yeah, that weekend. That weekend, the Saturday after the- Did you guys see the new stuff on the wall back there?
• 33:02
I did. Yes, yes. I'm gonna have to take a picture of that, 'cause that looks pretty good. We got new artwork on the wall here, Mark. Oh, speaking of artwork, February f- 7th...
• 33:10
Fe- Fe- February 7th would be the, uh, WMSC art auction at the Pritzeloff Building, which is- Always fun... I got two tickets. I only got one, and I'm like, "Hey, where's my other ticket?" Yo, yo. There you go.
• 33:23
They didn't come as separate emails? Well, now I got a separate one so Wendy can go too. Oh. So. Speaking of MSC, who was the big winner on Monday during Billy's show? That was you. Yeah.
• 33:35
You were the one number after me, motherfucker. I was number four and eight. I was three and seven. [laughs] Ah, dick. We got the- Billy... the rhythm factor. So- So good to see Michael Shannon and Jason Behr.
• 33:48
Doing the R.E.M. Fables as a Reconstruction. Oh, wow. At Turner. That's- I didn't know- Well, I-... pay to that if I can't get in... I really thought it was gonna be at Shank, and I was, like, slightly, "Eh."
• 33:58
Oh, no, it's way better at Turner. [laughs] And, and then he's, and he's like, he's like, "No, it's at Turner." I'm like, "Oh, that made it even better." Moto Benyo.
• 34:06
Well, if the, uh, better half doesn't wanna go, you know who you got as- Right, right... number two there, sir. It's like, oh, with big, scary- That's gonna be a good-... Michael Shannon. He's Zod...
• 34:13
that's gonna be a good show. That's what... He's like, "You win." [laughs] All right. He, he didn't know it was me. I was like, "Come, son of Jor-El, kneel before Zod." Then he knew? No. Yeah.
• 34:24
N- no, he asked for my name, and then I was like, "This is Michael Ruck." He didn't l- he didn't look at the, uh- Caller ID... caller ID. Right on. All right, Mark, uh- Did you say Zod? [laughs] I always said...
• 34:35
Yeah, Michael Shannon, the guy, the actor who played Zod in The Man of Steel. Yeah. He does, and he- There we go... he travels around and plays R.E.M. There you go.
• 34:45
Uh, Mark, anything you wanna leave us with before we get out of here? I know we probably talked more than you did, but that's not really our fault. You just didn't assert yourself enough. Well- [laughs]...
• 34:55
that's all right. That's all right. [laughs] I'm a cagey guy. I'm not trying to step on anybody's- No worries. I'm kidding, dude... basically toes or verbal toes. You know, you know we all love you.
• 35:02
You're one of our- No, I know. I know... favorite guests to have, so thank you very much. Thank you. Well, I always love coming on, and you guys are awesome, but, uh, I did wanna throw out a couple things out there. Um,
• 35:12
our president-elect has done some things in the last day or so that are going to possibly cancel my insurance. Yeah. Ooh. That sucks. This is a big deal.
• 35:23
So, um, if you can help me out with, uh- Stop fucking that box up, Tony... spreading out access to my fundraiser for my medical GoFundMe, that would be hugely, uh, appreciated.
• 35:34
I don't think people understand the amount of money that is going out. I'm about to go into the dentist for the first time in a decade. Wow.
• 35:40
And they're probably gonna be removing and changing, like, at least four to six teeth in my mouth.
• 35:46
Um, this currently is partially covered under my insurance, but if this goes through, what he just signed, um, it won't be paid for, but my teeth are killing me. Oh, that sucks. I, I can't eat anything but soup.
• 36:02
I think, I think- So I need help from people... you know what?
• 36:04
I think, and I, I'm not a fan of the current administration by any stretch, but I think we have to take a just sort of a wait and see attitude because- Ah, you-... he did a lot of stuff that isn't gonna stand.
• 36:18
This bullshit will not stand. It can't, so. I hope. No. I hope. Yeah. I was kind of hoping he would go golfing a bunch and forget to do anything. He is. Well, yeah. Well. That's the problem.
• 36:31
[laughs] And all the tech billionaires are lining up like Bond villains. We, we don't... And here's the problem, we don't have a James Bond. [laughs] I got a, I got something for you.
• 36:38
We don't h- nobody has, like, "Oh, hey, okay, Daniel Craig, that was his last Bond movie." They have not established a new James Bond, and that's what's allowing all of the tech- No Kratz to be all powerful and whatever.
• 36:52
We need at least- I hadn't, I hadn't really thought of it that way, yeah... the specter of a, of a James Bond to squash these little fuckers down. Yeah. 100- So- 128%.
• 37:01
I'm willing to go with Trump because I'll tell you why. All right, the Broccoli, Cubby Broccoli family- It's no fucking anti-Semitic bullshit... I'm ready for anything.
• 37:06
I'm just looking forward to the day I wake up and find out he's dead. I know. I don't think he's gonna make his term- Oh... 'cause he's unhealthy and he's old. Robotics. Robotics. Robotics. Oh.
• 37:16
He's probably already dead. He could drive around in a wheelchair. I mean, old Leon- Mm... Leon Skunkmonk- We have a Deadpool on that one, by the way... Leon is a robot.
• 37:23
[laughs] You don't, you don't sit there and start- Dick Cheney... well, yeah, well, yeah, when you start g- uh, flailing, uh, Nazi Sieg Heils, I think you're... Something happened in the machinery.
• 37:33
Yeah, so you have- That or you're just a complete asshole- Wait, Mark, Mark... which he could be that. There was no doubt about that signal. He was throwing a Sieg Heil. No, there's no d- there's no... Yeah. 100% he was.
• 37:40
Yeah. I mean, if- D- Mark, do you have, do you have a pool for when- That's what I'm saying. He, if he's a robot and it just goes boink, boink like that. Do you have a pool? [laughs] How do we get in on this pool?
• 37:49
[laughs] 'Cause yeah, we gotta watch, yeah, Clint Eastwood the Deadpool again. I'll, I'll, I'll message you the private deeds. [laughs] Okay. All right, man. Well, thank you very much for being on the show.
• 38:02
I'm glad that you- I don't think we're gonna get those new media credentials that they were promising at the first press briefing today. [laughs] What- Is he serious?... ever. No, for sure.
• 38:11
As always, it's wonderful to see you guys. I just wanna let everyone know if they're in the, in the Utah area, please come in to Longhorn Bicycle Co., either in Syracuse or in Perry.
• 38:22
Um, I'm not gonna give you the phone numbers or addresses. You can find us. But just come find us, come hang out. Yeah. We need some business. It's slow right now. Absolutely. And thank you, guys. All right.
• 38:31
I love you all, and I hope you have a fantastic rest of the week. All right, Mark. You too, buddy. Everybody- You too, Mark. Take it easy... ev- thank you. That's Mark Petersen, everybody. Okay. Later. Bye. Bye.
• 38:41
He called in from, all the way from Ogden, Utah. All the way from Ogden. Yeah. I think that's like, uh- That's like a new timezone... 19 hours from here or something like that. As the crow flies, or? As I drive.
• 38:52
Oh, gotcha. [laughs] As I drive. Uh, well, we did it again. Yes. And I hate to say it, but, uh, this was a pretty good show 'cause, you know, Mark was on it. Right. Thanks, Mark. Stuff. And these cool pedals.
• 39:03
And those cool pedals. Uh, we'll talk about those. Somebody's got a... I, I'm testing them. Somebody's testing them. Yes. By, by the way, we're gonna give some of those away at some point in the future. Dun, dun, dun.
• 39:13
I think I got some extras to give away. What's the price point on them? I said- $70... $69. Where the fuck were you earlier? $69. Oh, you did say that. I said $70. Well... [laughs] Do you take Venmo? All right.
• 39:22
I'll buy them right fucking now. You don't have to buy them. You're gonna write a story. Then I'll buy them. So either, either you pay for them or you write a story or whatever. Both. Don't worry about it.
• 39:31
All right, uh, I think we'll be back here next week for a show- I don't like those... 291. Peewee's looking at me, that little bastard over there. With his vacant, vacant eyes. [laughs] There we go.
• 39:40
  You're missing the- [rock music]
