Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_02: Hey guys, welcome back to Screen Care Anarchy.
- 0:02SPEAKER_02: This is your host, Zekta, and I'm really excited about the brand that we're interested in today because I think they're truly creating a new niche in the beauty industry.
- 0:10SPEAKER_02: And with all of the different categories that we hear about every day, it's really hard, I think, as consumers to understand what they mean and where we fit in, right?
- 0:19SPEAKER_02: And where we fit into all of these big boxes that are created.
- 0:23SPEAKER_02: And I think that's where I'm very interested in this brand.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: So without further ado, I want to introduce you guys to the founders of Clear Skincare, Kristen and Samuel Shaw.
- 0:31SPEAKER_02: Welcome to the show, Kristen and Samuel.
- 0:33SPEAKER_02: I'm so excited to host both of you.
- 0:35SPEAKER_03: Hi, thank you so much.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Hello, good morning.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: We're so excited to be here.
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know I'm excited to have you guys.
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: I would love to learn more about both of you and your journey to creating Clear if you can walk us down memory lane and maybe share that whole process with us.
- 0:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we would love to.
- 0:51SPEAKER_03: So actually, the process for Clear began back in 2014.
- 0:57SPEAKER_03: I was pregnant with my first child.
- 1:00SPEAKER_03: And during that time, I was on the market for that clean stretch mark cream.
- 1:05SPEAKER_03: So I became more mindful during that time about what I was putting in and on my body.
- 1:11SPEAKER_03: And during that time, I was scavenging the aisles of beauty products and couldn't find any stretch mark cream that was clean or didn't have fragrance in it.
- 1:22SPEAKER_03: And also they were so expensive.
- 1:25SPEAKER_03: During that time, I started formulating with my mother-in-law, who is an aesthetician and has been in the industry for over two decades.
- 1:35SPEAKER_03: And we were just mixing butters at home.
- 1:38SPEAKER_03: And then very soon after that, we realized that if we were really serious about taking something to market, that we needed to get a chemist involved.
- 1:48SPEAKER_03: And at that time we reached out to a chemist.
- 1:52SPEAKER_03: Um, she had previous experience with L'Oreal, and she was out in Vermont.
- 1:57SPEAKER_03: We formulated a fantastic stretch mark cream with her, but as life would have it, my husband was going through nursing school and then we had our baby.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: And so the whole yeah, so everything kind of got put on hold during that time.
- 2:13SPEAKER_03: It wasn't until 2020 when the pandemic hit, and just like many other people, uh, time kind of slowed down for us, and we were able to pick back up on this skincare journey.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, that's really cool that you guys really had like this need that you're trying to fill.
- 2:31SPEAKER_02: It's interesting you mentioned stretch marks because a while ago, like a few years ago, my brother actually asked me about do you know anything that is out there for stretch marks?
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: And I remember distinctly being like, no, you know, like there's not.
- 2:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:47SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 2:48SPEAKER_03: Actually, we thought about that too in that time frame.
- 2:51SPEAKER_03: Uh, we had my husband included men who want stretch mark cream for several different reasons too, even muscle growth.
- 2:59SPEAKER_03: And so it was definitely a need.
- 3:00SPEAKER_03: This was kind of before Clean Beauty had really blown up, you know, back in that time.
- 3:06SPEAKER_03: But then we kind of put it on the back burner until 2020.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: No, I mean, I think that there's definitely a need in the industry, like, you know, and the I said this a little bit in the intro was, you know, and I think there's a need to really define the categories that we have right now in this space, you know, because I think that a lot of consumers like they want to find what's best for them and say, for example, natural beauty or clean beauty, but it's just those are very broad terms at this point, in my opinion, you know?
- 3:35SPEAKER_02: And so, like, I just think a lot of people like they get lost and they they don't know if it's a fit for them because I think the names also don't really resonate anymore.
- 3:46SPEAKER_02: I mean, for me, I know like a while ago, like maybe five, six years ago, I would look at clean and I was like, okay, well, I guess I understand the concept, you know, like it makes sense.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: But even then it was like overwhelming to figure out like, okay, you're saying you're clean, but like what does that mean for me as a consumer in terms of like my needs, you know, like in terms of what I'm trying trying to target.
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: So like I think that's where I really want to discuss what your thoughts are on just how our industry is approaching this and how you guys are kind of paving the way into this more thoughtful space.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, it's it is, and it's overwhelming as consumers to, like you said, to be able to identify and then understand what that actually means to the company that's telling you it is clean or to the retailer that's putting it in this section.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: So we tried to come from an angle of having full transparency.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: You know, we have a history in you know, trying to eat healthy vegetarian or vegan lifestyle and just be really mindful of our personal lives in that way.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: So we wanted to portray that while being able to provide some clarity for customers of um what actually meant to us.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: And, you know, for us, it came down to you know, sticking to our values and being able to learn and identify what it actually means to have clean ingredients.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: And I'll let Kristen speak to that a little bit because you know, the journey for us to one learn because we were very new to ingredients and understanding where to get them, and then okay, they're selling it to us, but where is it actually coming from and how safe is it when it was actually created?
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: So these were you know nuanced things that we fell into and we had an interesting experience.
- 5:24SPEAKER_03: For us, I think when we dove back into it um in 2020, we were really going through the processes and meeting with manufacturers and suppliers and raw material.
- 5:35SPEAKER_03: We quickly learned while clean beauty doesn't really mean it's clean through the whole chain of supply and demand.
- 5:44SPEAKER_03: And so I think for so many, clean means something different, but as like a broad term, a lot of people identify with it as just like non-toxic ingredients.
- 5:54SPEAKER_03: There's a bit of transparency and safety, prioritizing ingredients that are considered safe for both the user and the environment.
- 6:02SPEAKER_03: But when it comes to thoughtful beauty, I believe it takes the principles of clean beauty a step further by incorporating like a holistic approach to the product formulation and brand philosophy.
- 6:14SPEAKER_03: So for us, it's really sustainability, ethical sourcing, inclusivity, community impact, and like socioeconomic pieces that are really incorporated into the brand's philosophy and all of those things.
- 6:29SPEAKER_03: As we were going through this process and meeting with, say, a raw material supplier, and you we request their safety data sheet, and we see that they smear the product in a rabbit's eye.
- 6:43SPEAKER_03: We just couldn't feel good about making the claim that we were cruelty free if our supplier doesn't have the same practices or beliefs as us.
- 6:54SPEAKER_03: And so we were presented with a lot of challenges from and pushback from manufacturers.
- 7:00SPEAKER_03: You're not gonna find it, you're not gonna find somebody, a lot of that.
- 7:04SPEAKER_03: And it just took a little bit more time, but it was something that you know we had to stick true to.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, I really like that you brought that up because I think a lot of times, and I don't think it comes from a bad place, but I think a lot of new entrepreneurs make the mistake of just blindly trusting that you know, the ingredients and the packaging or whatever you need for the product, it's coming from a place where you would approve.
- 7:27SPEAKER_02: But like when you dive deeper and you look closer, you know, it becomes apparent that there might not be these same practices being, you know, followed on multiple levels of this whole process of creating a brand.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: So I think you've really, really brought up a very novel idea here, which is that there is a lot more accountability that goes into creating a brand in the beauty industry now than it did before, because people do care about, you know, is it truly vegan, is it truly natural, is it cruelty-free?
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, they want the consumers really want that.
- 7:58SPEAKER_02: And I think for brands, there's a real, it's a heavy burden, right?
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: And you guys have it on your shoulders, but if you do it right, it goes such a long way in terms of developing consumer trust, in my opinion, because then we can say that, yeah, no, the clear skincare, I know for a fact, is not testing on animals.
- 8:17SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 8:17SPEAKER_02: Like not at no point, you know, have they done that.
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: And so that matters.
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: And I think it's a real message to send out to the beauty industry, you know.
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: So I I really applaud you guys for that.
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: That's really cool.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, thank you.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: And just going down on the note of you know, the ingredients and safety, and it was, you know, we experienced this with the suppliers of these ingredients, and then fortunate to work with our chemist Rachel Ho.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: You know, maybe we'll get an opportunity to talk about her and how helpful she was.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: But some insight that we learned is working with manufacturers, apparently, when you're looking to scale ingredients and scale products, commonly they'll add ethoxalates or authoxylated ingredients to help with stability as you're sizing up.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: And we're like, well, that doesn't really align with us.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: We have to know to even ask these questions.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: Apparently, in the industry, there's some level of, hey, we just had to add this.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: So knowing to ask these questions in the forefront, which is so so helpful.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Um, and it was again another opportunity for us to stick to our values and stick to what was important to us, while fortunately understanding that this was a possibility and it would, you know, would it change our product, but it would then, you know, change its you know safety profile and and all the things that we like to talk about.
- 9:29SPEAKER_02: No, I think that's so such a valid point as well, because I a while ago I had interviewed a manufacturer and we were discussing this topic as well from the manufacturing side, Sam.
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: And what was brought up was exactly what you said, which is that there are many brands out there that even for manufacturers, they're like, Well, why don't you ask us what options we have?
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: Because like they'll they'll just be like, no, we want the cheapest option.
- 9:54SPEAKER_02: And the manufacturers, even like some of the ones that are really doing it right, they'll be like, Well, honestly, if you ask our opinion, this is a better option, even though it might not be the most cheap or you know what I mean, whatever, like cost friendly for you, in the long run, this is the better option, whether it's an ingredient or like, you know, if it comes to testing or whatnot, there are manufacturers out there that also align with what you're, you know, what your guys are saying.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: And so I know that it's a real topic that just does hasn't surfaced enough in our industry, and it needs to, you know what I mean?
- 10:25SPEAKER_02: It needs it really needs to at this point.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: So yeah, it does, it really does.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: And you think uh our industry right now, where to some degree it's become there's so many turnkey operations out there where somebody that has you know their idea, which is wonderful from one perspective, but then it puts a lot of risk as to the quality, obviously, of the products that are being put out because they're just, you know, we have set ingredients, this is you can pick and add, and you know, so it's become a higher responsibility, really, I feel like for companies that you know have some longevity and are persevering against a lot of brands popping up and making claims.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: And so it's been a great experience and it's been one that's opened our eyes up to a lot of learning.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: Bet, I bet that's been it's been very eye-opening.
- 11:11SPEAKER_02: I I want to know more though.
- 11:13SPEAKER_02: You had mentioned your your chemist, and I would love to learn more about the actual formula if you guys could dive into that a little bit.
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: You know, what really went behind creating how many iterations did you have to go through before you got it um the way you wanted it?
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think uh working with Rachel.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, we interviewed, I don't know, how many different chemists, at least 30, 40 chemists, and you know, at first we were just googling things like contract chemists or beauty chemists and found you know websites.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: So we were able to work with Rachel Ho, which she is working at a at Paula's Choice now.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: And at that time, she was an independent contractor and had already won some awards with Youth of the People.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: So we were uh super excited to have that opportunity.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: And so we really leaned on her um a lot to be able to guide us into the safety and to the selection.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: We had some ideas and we wanted to be as authentic, as plant-based as possible.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: We wanted to use new technologies to be able to figure out, for example, how to add maybe a color that comes from you know a basil flower extract or from turmeric root, which is some of the ingredients that we use, um, or china berry.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: So kind of dove into it with her to guide us in that way, um, while keeping in mind, okay, what do we actually want to do?
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: What do we want this product to do?
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: Which, and then to answer your questions, I don't know how many iterations it took.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: I think let's say at least 23, if I remember the labels on the bottle.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: So, you know, unfortunately during that time, we had we had time.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: That was one of the, you know, one of the things that people had a lot of during 2020.
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: You know, when people are are crafting a product, I always wonder, like, yeah, it must take a lot to really nail it down, especially when you're being very conscious about the ingredients and you know, where you're headed.
- 12:56SPEAKER_02: You know, overall, it's I can imagine it being very difficult to come to that final point where you're like, okay, now it's perfect, you know.
- 13:03SPEAKER_03: So Yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 13:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, she was instrumental.
- 13:07SPEAKER_03: We leaned on our partners um heavily as we're not experts in the industry at all, but there was real passion there.
- 13:17SPEAKER_02: Now I want to actually talk about I think a topic and see what your thoughts are on it, because you know, I think right now where we are in the especially in the skincare realm, I think there's definitely a lot of greenwashing going on.
- 13:29SPEAKER_02: I I think it's important to discuss this because, you know, people really throw around the term greenwashing.
- 13:35SPEAKER_02: And um, I think what you guys are doing is a real testament to how we should be approaching it, the whole realm of clean beauty, green beauty, because at the end of the day, it's really about what did you actually do to make sure that you took the right approach?
- 13:49SPEAKER_02: You know, it's not about what did you put on your packaging?
- 13:52SPEAKER_02: You know, it's more about did you actually do your homework.
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: So what are your thoughts on this whole, like this whole thing that's happening in the industry where people are truly greenwashing?
- 14:00SPEAKER_02: You know, they're they're kind of advertising something that's not really there.
- 14:04SPEAKER_03: Actually, for me, it was, I knew when we got into the industry that it had existed, but to the extent I I didn't know it wasn't clear until we started interviewing our partners.
- 14:19SPEAKER_03: And it was really discouraging, I would say when you're meeting with somebody and you have a vision, it was really important to us at the beginning.
- 14:30SPEAKER_03: We we were considering doing compostable or outer packaging or seeded paper packaging where the consumer could then plant the package and then it would turn into like some flowers or something like that.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: It would turn into a clear flower.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: We weren't able to formulate that.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: So it didn't work.
- 14:51SPEAKER_03: Um but we thought that idea was interesting.
- 14:54SPEAKER_03: And we actually had a manufacturer suggest he didn't even have recycled paper options, but he suggested uh to us to actually print on the paper to make it appear seated.
- 15:10SPEAKER_03: And it was, I was so taken back during the call and had to end it um right there afterwards because sorry, sir, but you have the wrong person in mind in front of you.
- 15:20SPEAKER_03: That's not us.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: And so um, it was just really concerning to have had several of these kinds of conversations with professionals, suppliers, manufacturers in the industry.
- 15:33SPEAKER_03: So, you know, they're trying to earn your business, they're trying to get you to save money to go with them and persuade you into making that decision, but it meant more for us to take even a less of a margin or decrease our margin to produce something that wasn't going to be impacting the earth negatively and also important just to for our values.
- 16:00SPEAKER_02: I mean, I can't imagine having to deal with that.
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: Like you call somebody and they're like literally telling you to lie.
- 16:05SPEAKER_02: Like that's crazy.
- 16:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 16:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: It was wild.
- 16:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's wild.
- 16:10SPEAKER_02: Like, I I don't understand why, you know, that even exists.
- 16:13SPEAKER_02: Like at the end of the day, like, and this is something I mean, I've had this opinion as well as a consumer, is that you know, there needs to be a lot of transparency when it comes to like who's manufacturing things or and who's like behind because the thing is the brands I really believe in my heart brands come from a place, like especially smaller, like new brands, they come from a place of true, like they want to do it right.
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: Like they really do.
- 16:37SPEAKER_02: And the problem is on this like level of like when you go to the like you said, Kristen, when you go to the professionals and you ask them for these options and you're getting these kind of answers, like that's crazy.
- 16:49SPEAKER_02: You know, like someone needs to be there to check them.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: Like, what are you guys offering?
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: And why are you offering options that shouldn't even be options?
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: You know, like if you're gonna lie and say that, oh, this is something that can mimic what you want, that's huge, that's a huge problem, you know.
- 17:05SPEAKER_02: And I think it really adds to this whole idea of how now the whole space of skincare and beauty is getting regulated, right?
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: Because we're we're regulating all these things, but then there's still so much that is like going unseen, I feel like, you know?
- 17:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's it was really eye-opening for us too, unfortunately.
- 17:23SPEAKER_03: It gave us even more purpose to continue down this path to do things the right way and just sharing the process with people to educate them.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, I'm glad that you're doing it the right way.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: And I really love the brand.
- 17:35SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think that at the end of the day, like I'd rather see a brand like clear and have, you know, solid offerings than just brands that are churning out products every single year, like 20 products a year.
- 17:48SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 17:48SPEAKER_02: And you don't know, you don't know where these products are made, you don't know anything about them, you don't know like, you know, who was behind it.
- 17:55SPEAKER_02: Like it just, I don't know.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: As a consumer, it's a turn off to me.
- 17:58SPEAKER_02: I believe in that personal connection with, you know, if you're gonna shop a brand, you're gonna vote with your dollars as a consumer.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: You should understand why you're buying what you're buying.
- 18:07SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 18:08SPEAKER_02: And so like I really love the brand.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: I think you guys have made, you know, two wonderful products, the cleanser and the moisturizer is really lovely.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: And I love the uh cosmetic clutch, by the way.
- 18:18SPEAKER_02: I was telling every everyone listening, I was telling uh Kristen and Sam before the interview, I love the cosmetic clutch.
- 18:24SPEAKER_02: It's really roomy and it's just so nice for travel.
- 18:27SPEAKER_02: So keep that one in mind too as you're shopping.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: I appreciate that.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, thank you very much.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: And you know, to your point, you know, releasing lots of products, and you know, we're excited because we have you know a few more products that we're have on the calendar to to be released over over the next uh we think in 12 to 12 months or so.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: But um the whole idea of you know 10 to 12 products a year, and is it something that we compare it to like fast fashion and just the mass amounts of like either clothing that's being created, it it kind of reminds me of that in a way.
- 18:58SPEAKER_02: It's a problem though.
- 18:59SPEAKER_02: I I feel like it's just like it's too it's overload, you know what I mean?
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: And also like, I don't know, I I'm more of a consumer that likes to like actually sound kind of cheesy, but I like to bond with my products, you know what I mean?
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: Like if I really love and I fall in love with a cleanser or I fall in love with a moisturizer, I like to stay to that, you know what I mean?
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: I stick to it.
- 19:17SPEAKER_02: And it's hard to do that when you see a brand that has like 80 products, you know what I mean?
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: And and next year they'll have a hundred.
- 19:25SPEAKER_02: So, you know, it becomes a little difficult to navigate.
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: And I think a lot of the misunderstanding in our industry has kind of come from that.
- 19:32SPEAKER_02: So I'm glad that you guys are taking it slow, but you're doing it right.
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: Like, I I can tell you honestly, from my end as a consumer, it goes a long way for a lot of us.
- 19:39SPEAKER_02: So truly hats off to you.
- 19:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:41SPEAKER_02: Well, I I've really enjoyed this conversation, and I hope everyone listening, you guys check out Clear Skin Care.
- 19:46SPEAKER_02: We're gonna be linking everything in the notes, the show notes.
- 19:49SPEAKER_02: So definitely check out the links, but also, you know, definitely support them, guys.
- 19:53SPEAKER_02: You know, support the brands that are doing it right.
- 19:55SPEAKER_02: I can't say that enough.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: I've said it before on our show many times, where I strongly believe that as consumers, we do have to vote with our dollars.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: We have to go and find the brands that are like going that extra mile because that's how we're gonna pave a road for a safer industry.
- 20:12SPEAKER_02: And so I really encourage all of you, check out the brands that are doing that.
- 20:16SPEAKER_02: Clear is definitely one of them.
- 20:17SPEAKER_02: And like I said, I love the vitamin C moisturizer, it's a really solid moisturizer, and the jelly cleanser is really lovely for pretty much everybody, you know.
