- 0:08Super Bowl VIII was played on January 13, 1974, when the Minnesota Vikings faced the Miami Dolphins at Rice Stadium in Houston, Texas.
- 0:17Minnesota had won four straight NFC Central titles from 1968 to 1971 under head coach Bud Grant.
- 0:24They struggled in 1972 after acquiring quarterback Fran Tarkenton from the Giants, but by 1973 they were back on track with the Purple People leaders defense that only allowed 168 points in 14 games on their way to a 12-2 record.
- 0:39Miami was coached by Don Schula, who led them to a perfect season in 1972, and with only two losses in 1973, they had their eyes on a second consecutive championship.
- 0:49This audio recording is from the CBS Radio broadcast featuring announcers Andy Musser and Bob Tucker.
- 0:56For Super Bowl VIII between the Miami Dolphins and Minnesota Vikings. Super Bowl VIII from Rice Stadium, Houston, Texas on the CBS Radio Network. CBS Radio Sports presents the AFC-NFC World Championship Game between the Miami Dolphins, the AFC champions, and the Minnesota Vikings, the NFC champions.
- 1:22Hello everyone, this is Andy Musser along with Bob Tucker, ready to bring you all the action and color as the Dolphins take on the Vikings here in Super Bowl VIII.
- 1:31Today's game is sponsored in part by the front wheel drive Subaru, by Contact, the world's number one cold medicine, and by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.
- 1:43We have a gray overcast day here in Houston today, the temperature just a half hour ago listed as 50 degrees, and the wind from the northeast at six miles per hour.
- 1:55Very shortly now, the national anthem is going to be presented, and right after that I'm going to introduce Bob Tucker, who will be here handling the analysis for us today.
- 2:06Bob will have a comment certainly about Paul Warfield and his situation, but the Viking defensive squad has been introduced because the Dolphins are going to receive the ball to start the game, and I understand that they've lost only one toss all year long.
- 2:21So now we are set for our national anthem.
- 2:51The Dolphins are going to receive the ball to start the game.
- 3:00And the Vikings are going to receive the ball to start the game.
- 3:27That of course was America the Beautiful, and there is a reading going on in the field now, and now we're getting set for the national anthem.
- 3:57The Dolphins are going to receive the ball to start the game.
- 4:07And the Vikings are going to receive the ball to start the game.
- 4:35Charlie Pryde singing the national anthem.
- 4:55Well Bob Tucker, tight end of the New York Giants, is here in the booth with us today as our analyst, and Bob, everybody wants to know how Paul Warfield is going to do here today. Did you take a look at him in the free game warmup?
- 5:05Yes I did Andy, and I watched him through his warmups, and I think it's very critical. I'm going to be very surprised if we see Paul Warfield as the productive offensive receiver as we normally see him throughout the year.
- 5:20I think his hamstring injury is, I think it is serious. I've been watching him, he only did some jogging, he did some short outfalls, and I really didn't see him stretch out, and I think he's really unable to.
- 5:32And how much will that hurt the Dolphins?
- 5:35I think it's going to hurt them a lot because it's going to, I don't think it's going to stretch the Minnesota defense, the zone that much, and I think it's going to suggest a little bit more problems with the short pass.
- 5:47Here we're set for the kick, Greg Cox the kick for the Vikings, Scott taking it for the Dolphins on the seven yard line, he's up across the 20, breaks the tackle against the 30 heading outside at the 35, and he is down at about the 37 yard line, a 30 yard return by Jake Scott.
- 6:05The stop made by Terry Brown of the Minnesota Vikings, so a rather startling play to begin this Super Bowl game. Let's set the Dolphins for you offensively now as they will take over on their own 28 yard line.
- 6:22Bob Greasy is the quarterback wearing number 12, Mercury Morris at one running back, and Larry Zonka is at the other running back spot.
- 6:31The tight end is Jim Mandich, the wide receiver is on the one side is Marlon Briscoe and the other is Paul Warfield.
- 6:38In motion coming wide to the left is Briscoe, pitch to the right side comes to Morris, has a block, gets across the 40, and is down at the 42 yard line by Carl Eller.
- 6:49And let's go now with the Vikings defense.
- 6:52Eller at the left defensive end, Gary Larson the left tackle, Alan Page the right tackle, and Jim Marshall the right end. The linebackers, Roy Winston on the left, Jeff Seaman in the middle, Wally Hilgenberg on the right.
- 7:05The left cornerback is Nate Wright, the right cornerback Bobby Bryant, and the safeties, Jeff Wright and Paul Krautz.
- 7:16Second and six now for the Dolphins, they have a wide formation to the right side.
- 7:24Only man back is Zonka, gets the handoff, slants hard off the right side, and gets out to about the 44 yard line.
- 7:32Hard tackle there made by Larson and Winston.
- 7:38Larson's position on the line seems to be one of control where I think one of Eller's and Marshall and Page is one of just go right through.
- 7:52So the ball is up the Dolphins 44 yard line, and it brings up our first ball control play of the afternoon. It's third and three for the Miami Dolphins.
- 8:02Standard process now to the right.
- 8:07Warfield now coming in motion out to the left side.
- 8:10Greasy dropping back for his first pass, firing over the middle, and the pass is complete in Viking territory at the 42 yard line to Jim Mandich the tight end.
- 8:21And Bob Tucker would be well qualified to talk about that 13 yard reception.
- 8:25Yes, this was a formation to the right side with Warfield coming in motion this way, and Paul just took the zone with him over to the sideline, opened up the tight end right over the middle.
- 8:35Now the ball is at the Viking 43 yard line as the Dolphins here on their first possession have moved it across midfield.
- 8:43A very foggy day here in Houston.
- 8:46Sellout crowd of over 71,000 on hand to watch this one on the ground tomorrow, sliding off to the right side, but he's not going to get much this time.
- 8:56Heading right, he picked up practically no ground as the middle linebacker Jeff Seaman and the right tackle Alan Page are right there to bring him down.
- 9:06So it's second down at 10 yards to go for the Dolphins and let's set up their offensive line for you.
- 9:11Wayne Moore is the left tackle. The left guard is Bob Kuchenberg, the center and a very good one is Jim Langer.
- 9:18The right guard also a fine player Larry Little and the right tackle is Norm Evans.
- 9:24Jim Kick is into the backfield now for the Dolphins.
- 9:32Another running play and this is Donka. He gets one through the middle.
- 9:36First down for the Dolphins. Tracking it all the way down to the Vikings.
- 9:4127 yard line. Big hole on the left side.
- 9:44Big hole and that was a good trap by the guard Kuchenberg. Good trap on Marshall inside.
- 9:52And the pick up good for 16 yards.
- 9:58You get a guy like Donka coming through the line. You can see all the people he carries with him and he just causes all kinds of problems for that Minnesota team.
- 10:06Any team for that matter. He is so very strong.
- 10:09At the Minnesota 27 Morris back in as one of the setbacks now and he is in a slot to the left side.
- 10:15As Greasy drops back and fires out right and the pass is grabbed on the way out of bounds by Marlon Grisco.
- 10:21He is in. It is a reception at the 21 yard line. The reception to Grisco.
- 10:32Miami now in field goal range and I think this is very important especially for the start of the game.
- 10:36They took the kick off. Super field position and they're doing something with the ball.
- 10:41And the computer says when you get down there take the three.
- 10:45Got to get some points.
- 10:46It's a little early to think about that. It's second and four now at the Minnesota 21 yard line.
- 10:51A defense which gets tougher at this end of the field they say.
- 10:56Donka and Morris are the running backs. Quick opener on the left side to Donka.
- 11:01And he is down to near the 16 yard line.
- 11:05Donka hitting hard off the left side.
- 11:08Donka now has three carries good for 23 yards and he's got a first down on this play right at the 16.
- 11:15This drive started on the kickoff and a 30 yard return by Jake Scott.
- 11:22And the clock still running now with 11 and a half left to go here in the opening period.
- 11:28We'd like to join the many. Welcome I should say the many folks listening to our broadcast today.
- 11:34American forces radio around the world picking up our description of this one and everybody wants to know what happens in the Super Bowl.
- 11:41Formation wide to the left.
- 11:43First down running backs are split.
- 11:46It's like a hit one hole and back out and went in again and he gets good room down to about the eight yard line.
- 11:54Carl Eller made the stop there but Bobby offensive line of the Dawkins is really doing the job so far.
- 12:01They're doing a super job and if they keep this up through this series of downs and maybe through the next three they're going to wear down this Minnesota front four which I think is predominantly.
- 12:12The defense in essence of Minnesota ball at the eight yard line of the Vikings change a tight end for the Dolphins.
- 12:20Mark Fleming engine mandiches out.
- 12:27Second down two yards to go.
- 12:32Running play to Morris and it looks like he has the first down as he gets slightly beyond the five yard line and this is really going to set it up good for the Dolphins as they will probably pick up new downs here and be only five yards from the goal line.
- 12:47They are first and goal from the five.
- 12:49Interesting note here Andy that Miami offensive line is just coming off the ball so hard and so low that first glance at it you see that Minnesota defense they're back to three yards right off the snap of the ball.
- 13:02Five minutes of the game have gone by Vikings have yet to touch the football.
- 13:07And their last game against the Cowboys the Vikings went on a long drive to start that game.
- 13:14So it's first and goal from the five as Greasy splits his running backs Morris on the right Zonko on the left now sending Warfield in motion toward the left side it's Zonko straight up the middle and he's got the touchdown.
- 13:28Carried it in from five yards out and the Dolphins have scored first.
- 13:45They seemingly made yardage as I recall Bob on every play but one they tried so far today I think they were stacked up with the line only once now with Pearl Marlowe the whole we have Gary you're probably in to try the extra point as the
- 14:03Dolphins here in their third consecutive Super Bowl and trying to win for the second straight time a score at first the kick is up and it is good.
- 14:16So the score now the Dolphins seven and Minnesota nothing there's a timeout on the field with that score.
- 14:26Sure you My.
- 14:36First.
- 14:49Gu RGB.
- 14:50Now, and Metropolitan, we have a plan for the future.
- 14:57It's called the future is now.
- 15:02Metropolitan life knows how important the future is to you
- 15:05and your family.
- 15:06We've been preparing hard for the future
- 15:09so that your Metropolitan representative is qualified
- 15:11to help you prepare for it better.
- 15:13Because the better prepared you are,
- 15:15the better your future will be.
- 15:17I said the future is now.
- 15:19We have the current future.
- 15:22It's called the future is now.
- 15:31Nine minutes and 33 seconds left in the first period
- 15:34of the Super Bowl with the Dolphins ahead 7 to nothing.
- 15:3810 plays, 62 yards.
- 15:39It took five minutes and 17 seconds.
- 15:42Zonka got the score.
- 15:43And now we've got Weston Gilliam back deep
- 15:46as your Premier kicks off.
- 15:49Charlie West waiting at the goal line,
- 15:50takes it, comes to the 5, slants to his left at the 10,
- 15:53gets bowled over there.
- 15:54And he is stacked up at about the 13 yard line
- 15:57as the Dolphins come down and do a pretty crisp job
- 16:00of knocking him over.
- 16:02West the return to the 13.
- 16:04There was someone from Miami, Andy, that just busted right
- 16:08through the wedge.
- 16:13Minnesota wedge set up on the 15 yard line
- 16:15and just crashed right into it and caused all kind of problems
- 16:18and West just fell over.
- 16:20The Bikes will be using Chuck Foreman and Oscar Reed
- 16:23at running back.
- 16:23Fran Tarkenton is the quarterback.
- 16:27And we'll get this first play now
- 16:28as they move from the 13 yard line.
- 16:31Tingle off the center as Tarkenton takes and gets
- 16:33the Foreman who spins off a block
- 16:36and gets it out to the 18 yard line.
- 16:38Carried by Foreman and a pickup of four.
- 16:41Carol Dale is the wide receiver on one side,
- 16:44John Gilliam on the other, and Stu Voight is the tight end.
- 16:48Brady Alderman at left tackle, Ed White at left guard,
- 16:51Mick Tingle off the center.
- 16:52Frank Gallagher is starting at right guard today
- 16:55in place of the injured Milt Sundew
- 16:56who was kicked in the knee in that Dallas game.
- 16:58Ron Yarry is the right tackle.
- 17:02Second and about five.
- 17:05Two tight ends are in the game right now.
- 17:07Doug King'srider is the other one.
- 17:09Running backs are split.
- 17:10Another running play to Foreman.
- 17:12And this time he is stocked up just about in his tracks.
- 17:16Not too much to work with Foreman that time.
- 17:20Manny Fernandez, the left defensive tackle
- 17:22for the Dolphins, made the stop.
- 17:24The Dolphs line up across the line with Vern Den Herder,
- 17:27Manny Fernandez, Bob Hines, and Bill Stample.
- 17:30The linebackers are Doug Swip, Nick Bonacani, and Mike Colon.
- 17:34The corners are Lloyd Mumford and Curtis Johnson.
- 17:36And the safeties are Jake Scott and Dick Anderson.
- 17:39Ball is at the 19.
- 17:41Third and five.
- 17:45Vikings facing ball control here.
- 17:50And Tarkenton will throw for it as he rolls slightly
- 17:52to the left side.
- 17:53Hits Foreman with the ball.
- 17:54He's got it.
- 17:55He's up to the 20.
- 17:56But I don't think he has enough yardage for the first down.
- 17:59A completed pass to Foreman coming out of the backfield.
- 18:04But the Vikings will be short of the first down.
- 18:07As middle linebacker Bonacani, who led his team in tackles
- 18:09this year, and the free safety, Dick Anderson,
- 18:11combined to bring him down.
- 18:13They're going to have to front now, Andy.
- 18:18So we will be looking at Mike Eichide, who during the year
- 18:21averaged 39.8.
- 18:25Miami, in that particular play, went into their famous 353
- 18:29defense.
- 18:29And when Tarkenton rolled out to his right side,
- 18:32it just brought a hell of a lot of people over the line.
- 18:35Brought a hell of a lot of people over to him.
- 18:40For the Dolphins, Jake Scott is the deep man.
- 18:42In front of him is Dick Anderson.
- 18:44Eichide standing at his own 10.
- 18:46Gets a slightly high snap, but gets it away.
- 18:48Fairly good kick coming off to the right side.
- 18:50Knocked away from Scott as he was hit with the ball.
- 18:54And there's a mad scramble for it.
- 18:56And the Dolphins have recovered it.
- 18:58But Scott tried to take that ball in full stride.
- 19:00And it was pounced away on the 33-yard punt.
- 19:04And Scott made the recovery himself.
- 19:06And I'm sure he feels very fortunate right now.
- 19:09Terry Brown, for the Vikings, made a super play
- 19:11and causing a fumble.
- 19:12And he almost came up with it.
- 19:14This would have been a big break for Minnesota.
- 19:17So the Dolphins have their second possession.
- 19:20And they have it at their own 44-yard line.
- 19:23They've been coming up with this great field position, Andy.
- 19:27Oh, that's true.
- 19:27And they've had some big plays.
- 19:29And there haven't been many big defensive plays
- 19:32for the Vikings just yet.
- 19:35I think the Vikings are just sitting back and letting
- 19:37Miami do all the work.
- 19:39And it's hurting them.
- 19:40They're going to have to take a little bit more aggression,
- 19:42I feel.
- 19:44We've got seven minutes and eight seconds left to go here
- 19:47in the opening period.
- 19:49There's a timeout on the field.
- 19:50But we'll keep it here in the booth on this one
- 19:52and take a look at what's happened so far for the Dolphins.
- 19:55Greasy has completed both passes that he has tried,
- 19:59good for 19 yards.
- 20:01One went to Mandich and one went to Briscoe.
- 20:04But the big man so far has been Larry Zonka.
- 20:07He's got five carries for 36 yards.
- 20:10He has also been helped by Merck Morris, who has three
- 20:12carries, good for seven yards.
- 20:16The Dolphins faced only one third down conversion.
- 20:19They were so successful in moving the ball down the field
- 20:22that they only had to try one third down conversion.
- 20:24And of course, they made it.
- 20:27So Bob, I guess the big change that we'll
- 20:28be looking for in this game will be some improvement
- 20:30on Minnesota's defense.
- 20:32I would think so.
- 20:32And I think if Miami comes down and scores right now,
- 20:35it's going to have to disrupt the game plan of Minnesota,
- 20:37even this early in the game.
- 20:39Running backs again are Morris and Zonka.
- 20:41Remember now, it's first and 10 at the Miami 44.
- 20:46Slanting left is Morris, gets away from one tackler,
- 20:48gets out to the 45, gets the sky at midfield.
- 20:52And he is dragged down at his own 49 yard line by Paul Krause.
- 20:57One of the bikes penetrated very well,
- 20:59but Merck got away from him.
- 21:01That was Marshall, Andy.
- 21:03And he just came right across so fast.
- 21:05I think what happened was the tight end missed his block
- 21:09coming across.
- 21:10And Marshall just made a super play in the backfield.
- 21:12Once Morris got around him, though,
- 21:13there was nothing but daylight for about six or seven yards.
- 21:17Imagine Tucker saying that a tight end missed his block.
- 21:22That was a five yard gain.
- 21:23It's second and five now.
- 21:24The ball is just a yard shy of midfield.
- 21:27They're lined up in the I-formation
- 21:28this time for the first time.
- 21:33Reezy on a long count has both backs in blocking
- 21:36as he passes out to the right side.
- 21:38And it's complete out there to Jim Mandich.
- 21:40And Mandich is across midfield and raced out of bounds
- 21:43at the 43 yard line of the bikes.
- 21:48Jeff Wright and Roy Winston combined to shove him out.
- 21:51And so for the second time today and a first down on the play,
- 21:55the Dolphins are in the Viking territory.
- 22:00Their first position went all the way for a touchdown.
- 22:03The Vikings on their first position had the punt.
- 22:07Six minutes, 15 seconds left in the period.
- 22:14Formation comes out wide to the left side.
- 22:19Reezy looking over the defense and handing off to Mercury.
- 22:22Morris, boy, he ran into one of his blockers that time
- 22:25and still gets it down to the 39 yard line
- 22:28where he was stopped by Jeff Seaman.
- 22:31Morris is so quick.
- 22:32I think it was Larry Little that he ran fast.
- 22:35He did.
- 22:35He ran right in.
- 22:37And still came up smelling pretty good.
- 22:40He came out with about, I think, four on that play.
- 22:44So it's to the 39 of the Vikings where it's second down
- 22:47and just a little over five to go.
- 22:49We'll call it second and five.
- 22:50Jim Kick has now replaced Morris in the backfield.
- 22:54We'll sometimes use him for better blocking.
- 22:58And of course, they kind of scatter it around.
- 23:00And he throws a pretty good block
- 23:01as the handoff goes to Zaka, who gets the first down.
- 23:05And Zaka carries it down to the 31 yard line
- 23:07and picked through a tremendous block.
- 23:09Through a tremendous block and also the tight end
- 23:11through a great block in there.
- 23:12We had a cross block over on the right side of the line
- 23:16with Winston and Marshall.
- 23:18It worked out well.
- 23:19And Zaka just blew it right through there.
- 23:22He has been, too.
- 23:23Zaka with six carries and 44 yards so far.
- 23:27Down to the 31 of the Vikings.
- 23:29And who would have predicted that the Dolphins
- 23:32would be able to move?
- 23:33We don't want to say at will because some of these plays
- 23:36have not been huge gainers.
- 23:38But they've been picking up the yardage.
- 23:41Again, they stay on the ground.
- 23:43But this time, they will be stopped
- 23:44as Jim Kick gets the handoff.
- 23:46And Alan Page was right there.
- 23:49And the Minnesota fans who are on the other side of the field
- 23:53today run up their first real yellow the afternoon.
- 23:59This is one of Page's assets where he comes across the line
- 24:02so fast, which causes really all the problems for the passing
- 24:05game.
- 24:05On the running game, if you're going to trap him inside,
- 24:08which Miami has been doing with Zaka's been getting
- 24:10the yardage up the middle, leaves the area wide open.
- 24:13This time, it worked out well.
- 24:15He lost three yards on that play and kick stays into the game
- 24:18for a second and 13.
- 24:19Zaka, the other running back, both receivers way out wide.
- 24:23Handoff to Zaka.
- 24:25Big hole right side.
- 24:26He gets across the 25 down to the 22 yard line.
- 24:30And Zaka picks up another 13 yards.
- 24:34Nate White, the left cornerback, was called on to come up
- 24:36and stop that.
- 24:37This is going to be close enough for a measurement,
- 24:40I believe, to see if they have a first down.
- 24:43Greasy really fooled the Minnesota defense that time.
- 24:46I think they're going to be able to get a second down.
- 24:49Minnesota defense that time, I think Minnesota's playing
- 24:51past so much.
- 24:51The linebackers, just as a snap of the ball,
- 24:54flew out of there so fast with just a simple draw play.
- 24:57Big hole on the right side.
- 24:59They're measuring for the first, and it looks like it's going
- 25:02to be an inch short from where we view it.
- 25:04Here at Rice Stadium, our broadcast booth is high above
- 25:07the field, right at the 50 yard line.
- 25:09And it's just a little bit short.
- 25:11So it'll be third down, and I'll tell you,
- 25:13it's just an inch or so.
- 25:15That's the Viking 22 yard line.
- 25:17So this is a big play for that Minnesota defense right now,
- 25:20because they have been tested.
- 25:22I think if we had a little bit more field to work with,
- 25:26plus Miami's fine, is very happy to be on the 20 yard line.
- 25:30But with all the running they've been doing,
- 25:32I think they might try to play action fast.
- 25:35Possibly not right here, though, on the 22 yard line.
- 25:38Morris back in, his kick comes out, and two tight ends in
- 25:42for the Dolphins, as they have both Fleming and Mandich in.
- 25:45So normally that indicates a running play.
- 25:48They don't need much.
- 25:49It's third down.
- 25:50And if they don't get it here, of course,
- 25:52we'll see a field goal try, probably.
- 25:55But Grant crossed this up a few times in the game at Dallas.
- 25:59And off's like it, he's got it in some.
- 26:02He bowls all the way down inside the 15 yard line,
- 26:06and he's going to make it easy for us if he keeps running like that.
- 26:09There won't be that many measurements today.
- 26:11Call it the 14 yard line, and another first down.
- 26:14Let's pause five seconds for stations to identify themselves
- 26:18along the CBS radio network.
- 26:23This is WBBM Chicago.
- 26:28Eight first downs for the Dolphins so far,
- 26:31and they've really been moving.
- 26:32They're at the 14 of the Vikings,
- 26:34and they have another new set of downs right now
- 26:37as they split the running backs.
- 26:40Bob Griese behind Jim Langer calling,
- 26:43looking for a pass route over the middle.
- 26:45Briscoe has it right on the goal line.
- 26:48He has been stopped at the one yard line.
- 26:52A super catch, Andy, by Briscoe.
- 26:54Down about four or five yards and sliding in.
- 26:57Caught it on about the two.
- 26:59Someone clotheslined him there from Minnesota.
- 27:01I don't know who it was, but holding onto the ball,
- 27:03and he just did a super job.
- 27:05I believe that was Nate Wright, the left cornerback of the Vikings,
- 27:08so it's another first down,
- 27:10as Griese now is four out of four for 40 yards,
- 27:13so it's been Griese and Zonka today.
- 27:16And now they're only a yard away from another touchdown
- 27:19with still 219 remaining in the opening period.
- 27:24Let's set them up.
- 27:25Morris on the left, Zonka on the right.
- 27:30Griese takes the snap.
- 27:31Hands to Jimmy Kink.
- 27:32Jim Kink piles over,
- 27:34and I don't know whether he got it or not.
- 27:37They're stacked up on the goal line.
- 27:39He's awfully close, but there's been no signal.
- 27:42No getting on the way.
- 27:44Seemed to me, Andy, that he did make it in,
- 27:46but he was knocked back.
- 27:47I think they're going to place the ball
- 27:49maybe two or three inches away.
- 27:51I thought he got in, too, but we saw no signal, so we held up.
- 27:57Second down and goal from very close at hand.
- 28:02Zonka and Kik are the running backs at this stage.
- 28:06They use Morris for the open field area.
- 28:09So it's second down now.
- 28:11Zonka on the left, Kik on the right.
- 28:13Coming in motion is Warfield.
- 28:15The handoff to the second man, Kik, and again stacked up,
- 28:18but touchdown this time.
- 28:20He just did sneak it over for the Dolphins' second touchdown.
- 28:29A very important drive for Miami that time,
- 28:32and to get more points on the board,
- 28:34is really going to put Minnesota in trouble right now.
- 28:37Well, they've got to be discouraged.
- 28:39There's no question about that.
- 28:41I'm sure they didn't anticipate a 14-point deficit this early in the game.
- 28:46Strange the way these games go.
- 28:48The trend could change in a hurry, but so far it's been all Miami.
- 28:52All Larry Zonka.
- 28:54That's right, and a little Bob Greasy, too,
- 28:56and here's Garrow Eupremian out of the hold of Marl.
- 28:58The extra point is tacked on, and so with a pause in the action now,
- 29:03the score reads, Miami 14 and Minnesota nothing.
- 29:09Subaru, it saves you money.
- 29:11Subaru, it saves you gas.
- 29:13Subaru, you had front-wheel drive.
- 29:15Subaru, it's built to last.
- 29:17It's got a quad-assonable engine,
- 29:19and a VZ2.
- 29:20We could sell it on gas mileage alone,
- 29:22but you're getting more car with a Subaru.
- 29:26If you want to keep going these days,
- 29:28you've got to have a car that makes every gallon of gasoline count.
- 29:32Front-wheel drive Subaru gets around 25 miles to the gallon on regular,
- 29:36and some owners report getting better than 30.
- 29:39Now, since the average car gets about 13 and a half miles to the gallon,
- 29:43if you switch to Subaru, chances are good you could cut your gas cost almost in half.
- 29:49Test drive the 74 Subaru today.
- 29:52With its peppy quad-resonable engine that gets you around 25 miles to the gallon,
- 29:57it'll keep you going.
- 29:59It's got a quad-assonable engine,
- 30:01and a VZ2.
- 30:03We could sell it on gas mileage alone,
- 30:05but you're getting more car with a Subaru.
- 30:12With Bob Tucker, Andy Musser at the Super Bowl this year in Rice Stadium, Houston.
- 30:16And the Dolphins have gone on consecutive 10-place scoring drives.
- 30:20This most recent one worth 56 yards,
- 30:23and the times were almost identical, too.
- 30:26The one drive took 5.17.
- 30:28This most recent one 5.46.
- 30:30You have Permian to kick off now to West and Gilliam.
- 30:33Coming down to West at the 6-yard line.
- 30:36Heading left at the 15.
- 30:38Has a little room at the 20.
- 30:39And is banged at the 25.
- 30:41As a flag is dropped at the 20,
- 30:43he is driven out of bounds by Ed Newman,
- 30:46a reserve guard for the Miami Dolphins.
- 30:48A 20-yard return.
- 30:50But remember, we do have a flag thrown on this one,
- 30:53and we'll check the outcome.
- 30:55Only a minute 13 left here in this opening period,
- 30:58and it's been a stunning period as the Dolphins have just taken control.
- 31:03A holding call has been assessed to the Vikings.
- 31:09And so instead of taking over out around the 25,
- 31:12they're going to mark this one back.
- 31:15And the yard line for the Vikings now will be back at the 10-15-yard penalty.
- 31:21This field position isn't exactly what Minnesota had in mind right now.
- 31:25It seems like when things start going bad, they really go bad.
- 31:29So they've got to dig themselves out of a hole.
- 31:32And I suppose in a case like this,
- 31:34they'll be just as glad to see this period end
- 31:36and get a chance to operate the other way and maybe change something around.
- 31:40So the Vikings start right out at their own 10-yard line.
- 31:47Oscar Reed and Chuck Foreman are the running backs.
- 31:50Tarkenton wants to throw, rolling right, flares it out, hits Foreman,
- 31:54second completion to Foreman.
- 31:56At the 16-yard line, Foreman is driven out of bounds.
- 32:02Dick Anderson, the free safety of the Dolphins, drove him out right at the 15,
- 32:06a gain of about five, second down and five yards to go.
- 32:09Clock was stopped because the play went out of bounds.
- 32:12A team has never come to the Super Bowl for a second time without winning.
- 32:14A team has never come to the Super Bowl for a second time without winning.
- 32:17And, of course, as you know, the Vikings were losers a few years ago to Kansas City in 1970
- 32:19And, of course, as you know, the Vikings were losers a few years ago to Kansas City in 1970
- 32:22by a score of 23-7.
- 32:24by a score of 23-7.
- 32:25The Dolphins are trying to do what Green Bay did in the first couple of games.
- 32:27The Dolphins are trying to do what Green Bay did in the first couple of games.
- 32:33Second and five.
- 32:35Second and five.
- 32:35There's a handoff to Oscar Reed running way out to the left side.
- 32:37There's a handoff to Oscar Reed running way out to the left side.
- 32:40And Oscar is getting only a yard or so up to about the 17.
- 32:45Manny Fernandez, who had 67 tackles during the regular season,
- 32:50the ranked second on the Dolphin defensive squad, brings him down here.
- 32:54Minnesota seems to be making the grid blocks,
- 32:57but the pursuit of Miami defense is really causing a lot of trouble from Minnesota right now.
- 33:03Talking about tackles by Fernandez, he had 17 in the Super Bowl last year.
- 33:08Third and three for Minnesota.
- 33:11In motion now comes Foreman to the right side.
- 33:14Tarkenton back to throw, rolls right over the middle, and he has his tight end.
- 33:19Doug Pinsrider, a rookie from Minnesota, and he has the Arctic for a first down.
- 33:24He couldn't make a better catch than that, Andy, and two men around him.
- 33:29He was in heavy traffic, that's right.
- 33:33Very important first down for Minnesota now.
- 33:36What's the key to that, Bob? You've got to watch the ball and not worry about the people?
- 33:41That's what they tell you to do anyway.
- 33:44Well, we've just heard the gun, and it ends the first quarter with the score.
- 33:48Miami Dolphins 14, Minnesota Vikings nothing.
- 33:52If you're thinking about a winter vacation, thank you for watching the show.
- 33:57If you're thinking about a winter vacation, think about this.
- 34:00Florida offers you a greater variety of fun than any place else in the world.
- 34:05White beaches and lush greenery, and blue waters and luxury hotels and water sports and cruises,
- 34:11and golf and horse racing, and great restaurants and spectacular attractions coast to coast,
- 34:16and well, there's just no place else like Florida.
- 34:19And Delta Airlines can fly you to all the fun.
- 34:23Delta has nonstop flights to Florida from most major cities, New York, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia,
- 34:29Detroit, to name just a few.
- 34:31And this winter, Delta has wide rides 747s, DC-10s, Tri-Stars, and the new 727s
- 34:38to fly you nonstop to Florida's major resort cities.
- 34:42And Delta also flies to other fun spots, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Bermuda,
- 34:47plus ski gateways like Montreal and Bangor in Burlington.
- 34:51For reservations, see your travel agent or call Delta, the airline run by professionals.
- 34:56Delta is ready when you are.
- 34:59Andy Musser with Bob Tucker here at Rice Stadium, Houston.
- 35:05And maybe the possession chart in the first quarter tells the story as well as anything,
- 35:09because Minnesota had the ball only 3 minutes 47 seconds,
- 35:13the Dolphins had it 11 minutes and 13 seconds.
- 35:16And offense really is the best defense you have.
- 35:19Minnesota has yet to sustain a drive, and they just did get their first first down.
- 35:25So I think they're going to have to chew up some time, move it down the field,
- 35:30not really lose their poise and try and go up top because they are down 14-0.
- 35:35And I think Fran will take them along very well here.
- 35:39Former teammate of yours, Fran Tarkenton, is quarterbacking the Bikes,
- 35:43and they have the ball now at their own 27-yard line.
- 35:46Tarkenton is 3 out of 3 for 15 yards, and he has now a first down.
- 35:52Now the Vikings are moving to our left.
- 35:56As we view the action here at Rice Stadium, handoff to Foreman,
- 35:59bowls across the 30 as he hits the right side of his line and gets to the 32-yard line.
- 36:05Nick Anderson, Dolphin Free Safety, who led the league in interceptions this year with 8, makes the tackle.
- 36:13To the 32-yard line, it's now a second down and 5 yards to go.
- 36:19Vikings, a very good offensive team during the year.
- 36:22Tarkenton had a super season completing 62% of his passes.
- 36:27Didn't throw to his backs that often, but he has such good receivers,
- 36:30he didn't find it necessary or advantageous to do so.
- 36:35Second and 5 from the Viking 32, and this time it's Oscar Reed
- 36:41kicking into the line, peeking off to the right side,
- 36:44and getting to the 35 where Manny Fernandez and Bob Matheson were there to bring him down.
- 36:51By the way, Tuck, when we see Matheson in there, they call it the 53 defense because that's the number he wears.
- 36:57Is there any other thing we should know about that 53 defense?
- 37:00Well, the number he wears, 53, certainly coincides with the defensive call,
- 37:05but really they have three defensive linemen up front,
- 37:09bringing an extra linebacker, which is number 53,
- 37:12and they give him five linebackers instead of the original three.
- 37:17It's a Minnesota ball control situation now at the 36 on a third and one.
- 37:23Handoff Reed dives, looks like it's going to be very close because it was a long one.
- 37:29I think he did pick up a yard, but he may not have had enough for the first down.
- 37:34I don't think he made the first down.
- 37:35I don't think so either.
- 37:37He got all he could out of that play.
- 37:40He dove into the air on the right side of the line.
- 37:43The Viking players are indicating that they are short.
- 37:46I see Grady Alderman indicating to his bench so that they could be thinking about the strategy that he feels they did not make it.
- 37:53They're going to be short a good yard.
- 37:55They are.
- 37:57So they have a fourth down, and I'm sure the strategy here will dictate a punt.
- 38:07Mike Eishide is being sent in to do the putting.
- 38:10He will be putting for the second time in the game.
- 38:14And the Dolphins are sending Jake Scott back as the deep man,
- 38:17and Dick Anderson will be the safety in front of him.
- 38:20Scott back at his own 23-yard line and still backing some.
- 38:24Eishide standing at his 21.
- 38:26The snap to him is perfect.
- 38:28There's not much of a rush, and he gets away a high lingering kick taken by Scott at the 22.
- 38:34No fair catch goes to the 25 and gets to the 28-yard line.
- 38:38Pretty good move by Scott, who disdains the fair catch.
- 38:4343-yard punt, 7-yard return by Scott.
- 38:47Great coverage that time by Minnesota.
- 38:51And now we're back on Miami with the offense again,
- 38:53and they're going to, I think, try and wear this Minnesota defense down.
- 38:57And there's a timeout on the second quarter with the score.
- 39:00Miami Dolphins 14, Minnesota Vikings nothing.
- 39:05Give your hand to a friend, give your heart to your heart,
- 39:10give your cold, the contact, the sooner the better.
- 39:15Hey, I'm back. How's that cold?
- 39:17Rotten. Get the contact?
- 39:19I got everything. Contact, cold tablets, going to sleep?
- 39:22Oh, no.
- 39:23Honey, it's all cold medicine.
- 39:25Well, sure, but it only takes one contact for up to 12 hours continuous relief from sneezing, drifts, congestion.
- 39:31For that I'd need six of your cold tablets.
- 39:34Two every four hours.
- 39:35Or three ounces of nighttime liquid.
- 39:37One every four hours.
- 39:38Or just one contact. The tiny time pills do it.
- 39:41Well, it's all cold medicine.
- 39:43Those others contain anti-parietic analgesics, the liquid, antitusses, and alcohol.
- 39:48They're not in contact.
- 39:49Six or three or one.
- 39:51I'd choose the one contact.
- 39:53Me too. And I'll be away with the cold.
- 39:56Give your cold, the contact, the sooner the better.
- 40:02Six or three or one.
- 40:04When you catch a cold, take contact only as directed.
- 40:11First and 10 for the Miami Dolphins. They are on their own 29-yard line.
- 40:15We play two minutes of period number three as Briscoe comes in motion wide to the right.
- 40:20Quick flip in the backfield to Morris. Heading to the right side has Theroux.
- 40:23He's got a total of 35 hits by line and is driven out of bounds at the 42-yard line
- 40:29as Morris has picked up a first down for the Dolphins.
- 40:3313-yard game.
- 40:34And that's just a super runner, Andy. A super runner in Morris.
- 40:36When you have a one-two punch like Donka and Morris and the damage they do, it's just incredible.
- 40:42The Minnesota defense has the key on Donka and trying to stop his power.
- 40:46And then you give the ball to a guy like Morris who just outwits and outquicknesses everyone.
- 40:52And they'll play like we just saw here.
- 40:54It's true. They're a perfect combination.
- 40:56And then when you think you have a gym kick to spell them, it really is amazing.
- 41:00So it's again a first down out at their own 42-yard line.
- 41:04Dolphins in gear for the third time. It's Donka heading wide left this time.
- 41:08Has a block, gets across the 45-yard line.
- 41:11And will be stopped right about that point by Jimmy Marshall and Wally Hilgenberg.
- 41:16The 14 points scored in the first quarter by the Dolphins ties the Super Bowl record.
- 41:22It was done in the third quarter by Green Bay in 1967.
- 41:27In the 1967 game, of course, that was the first game.
- 41:31And Green Bay defeated Kansas City 35-10.
- 41:35At the Miami 45-yard line, and Jim Kick is in.
- 41:39Replacing Mercury Morris on a second and eighth.
- 41:45Kick is on the left. Donka on the right.
- 41:48Greasy dropping back to throw.
- 41:50He's got a big rush and he's going to be trapped.
- 41:53Alan Page was there to trap him and Royal Winston was there to make sure.
- 41:58As they nailed Greasy for the first time today.
- 42:01This was a blitz, Andy, and no one touched Page.
- 42:05I think both the center and the offensive guard went for the blitzing Jeff Seaman.
- 42:11And Page just came in untouched.
- 42:14I don't think Greasy had time to turn around.
- 42:17Saw Page staring him in the face.
- 42:20Loss of 10 yards on the play. So it's third and 18.
- 42:25And for the first time today, the Dolphins will be really tested.
- 42:28They've had a few other ball control plays, but this one is a real test.
- 42:32They line up wide to the right and they have the running back split.
- 42:36In an almost sure passing situation.
- 42:39Except they've got those great backs.
- 42:41Here goes Greasy dropping back.
- 42:43He's going to fire, looking long over the middle.
- 42:45He's going for Briscoe and it's incomplete.
- 42:48Briscoe all the way down the right sideline at the 25-yard line.
- 42:53Had drawn double coverage.
- 42:55From right, that would be Nate Wright and Paul Krause.
- 43:01Paul Krause made a super defensive play there.
- 43:04Briscoe really had the ball in his stomach and Krause came across and just knocked it away.
- 43:09Beautiful pass by Greasy that time.
- 43:13So for the first time today, we're going to have to see the Dolphins punt.
- 43:17And that would be Larry Seifel who averaged 42.3 during the year.
- 43:22And Bobby Bryant is the deep man back at his own 24-yard line for the Vikings.
- 43:30Here's the punt.
- 43:32Seifel gets it off slightly to the right side.
- 43:34Fair catch called by Bryant.
- 43:37And he's got it at the 27-yard line.
- 43:4038-yard kick.
- 43:42The fair catch, Andy, was the result of a great rush that time to block the kick by Minnesota.
- 43:49There's a timeout here in the second quarter with the score, Miami 14, Minnesota nothing.
- 43:58The sun is shining, things are going, things are going well with you and me.
- 44:20And the
- 44:23people who know the future is long.
- 44:28And metropolitan life, we have to plan the future because the future is long.
- 44:37Metropolitan life knows how important the future is to you and your family.
- 44:42We've been preparing hard for the future so that your metropolitan representative is qualified to help you prepare for it better
- 44:49because the better prepared you are, the better your future will be.
- 44:53And metropolitan life, we have to plan the future because the future is long.
- 45:07We started out with such excitement here today, I don't think we ever gave you the officials working the game.
- 45:12Ben Drythe is the referee today.
- 45:15Ralph Moorcroft is the umpire.
- 45:18Leo Miles is the head linesman.
- 45:20Jack Fetty is the line judge.
- 45:22Stan Javie is the back judge.
- 45:24Fritz Graf is the field judge.
- 45:28Well, the Vikings have the ball now at the 27, their best field position to start today in their third possession of the afternoon here in the second period.
- 45:36And they're going to stay on the ground as Foreman heads wide to the right side, slices back nicely and gets just shy of the 30 yard line.
- 45:44The rookie who played his college ball at Miami of Florida, Chuck Foreman, gets it out to the 30 yard line.
- 45:52Take up a three, second down and seven yards to go.
- 45:57Foreman today, four carries for 13 yards at this moment.
- 46:04Eleven minutes and five seconds left here in the second period and it's 14-0 Miami.
- 46:11It's a big thing. It's possible the Minnesota Vikings conceivably could have an edge in this department.
- 46:17The statistics don't necessarily reveal that though.
- 46:21So we have a third and 18 for Minnesota.
- 46:25Tarkenton again dropping back, putting everybody in motion now rolling out to the right, fires the ball along the sidelines.
- 46:32It is caught but out of bounds.
- 46:34A reception made by King's Ryder, the rookie tight end, but he caught the ball out of bounds.
- 46:41Great reception there, Andy, and Tarkenton's really upset.
- 46:47Well, Bob, they really teach you to pay attention to where you are, don't they?
- 46:53Yeah, but you have to catch the ball first, Andy.
- 46:58It was a great reception.
- 47:00If you concentrate on the end line, you're not going to concentrate on the ball and the best thing you can do is just try and catch the ball and hope you're in bounds.
- 47:07A replay of that play seems to indicate he might have stepped out of bounds and then come back in.
- 47:12So here's the punt and it's going to be a long one by Eyshaw.
- 47:16Jake Scott taking it and fair catching at his own 34-yard line.
- 47:20So the Vikings have had the punt all three times they've had the ball today.
- 47:27Eyshaw has had punts of 33, 43, and 46 yards.
- 47:35So with 10 minutes and three seconds remaining in the second period, the Dolphins get another crack.
- 47:40This will be their fourth possession.
- 47:42They scored the first two times and they punted the last time.
- 47:48At their own 34-yard line, Marky Remaris and Larry Zonka, the running backs, breezy the quarterback.
- 47:56Warfield is still in the game. He's the wide receiver on the left.
- 47:59Briscoe wide on the right.
- 48:02And the tight end is Jim Mandich.
- 48:06Here is Zonka getting a hole on the right side and getting out across the 35 and to the 36 and he may have two yards on the play.
- 48:17Gary Larson and Carl Liller get together to bring him down.
- 48:20And a flag has been dropped on the play.
- 48:23And we saw the wide receiver on the right side, Marlon Briscoe, come in motion back towards the play at that time.
- 48:30Right, and this brings us to Minnesota defense.
- 48:33I think we're going to get a penalty against Minnesota for a personal foul, I believe.
- 48:38I think they're getting a little frustrated out there and someone threw a punch, I believe.
- 48:42You know, probably what's happening is that the Viking defense feels like they've got to get the job done.
- 48:47It's up to them to keep the Bikes in the game.
- 48:52Two penalties for 30 yards against the Vikings.
- 49:00This one records a first down for Miami and moves the ball across midfield and puts it at Minnesota's 49-yard line, just across midfield.
- 49:11We understand the penalty was on Kingsrider.
- 49:17Excuse me, Hylgenberg, Wally Hylgenberg, here is Greasy to throw, firing out to the left, and he's got Warfield.
- 49:24Warfield makes the reception driven immediately out of bounds at the 43-yard line by Bobby Bryant.
- 49:31And Warfield that time, Andy, looked real good. He didn't look like he had a hamstring pull there.
- 49:36Maybe what I said in the beginning of the game really doesn't have that much merit right now.
- 49:42The only thing that we can say, Bob, as newsmen covering the game, we're kind of glad for things like sparrows in the locker rooms
- 49:50and hamstring pulls because they keep it lively the week prior to the game.
- 49:57Second down, four yards to go for Miami.
- 50:02Running backs are set off to the right side. It's Zonka, slanting off to the right, getting to the 40-yard line,
- 50:08and he's grabbed there immediately by Jeff Seaman and Roy Winston right at the 40-yard line of Minnesota.
- 50:15Let's check the Zonka figures today because he's been the workforce. 11 carries, 71 yards for Larry Zonka.
- 50:25I think most of the yardage is going to be made up the middle today.
- 50:29Andy, both teams play a safety zone defense, which makes it a little bit more difficult to run around the end.
- 50:35The safety man staring you right in the face, he is the force man, whereas in a man-to-man, he'd be back watching pass.
- 50:41Miami, two out of three in third down conversions. They face one here. It's third and one at the Minnesota 40-yard line.
- 50:50Second man through will carry it. Morris, big hole. He has it with no doubt at all.
- 50:55Goes all the way down to the 30-yard line where he is stopped by the last man available, Paul Kraus.
- 51:01That's the second time today where they've been in a third and one, and they've picked it up with plenty to spare.
- 51:07And the man who made that play, Andy, was Zonka. He made such a super fake into the line.
- 51:11Everyone from Minnesota went after him. Morris just sneaked right through there and found a big hole, two or three yards beyond the line of scrimmage.
- 51:21The first downs tell the story here today, too. Miami, 13, Minnesota, one.
- 51:28So from the 30-yard line of the Vikes, the pressure is on the defense here, as Greasy has new downs to work with.
- 51:37And he'll give to Zonka, who comes across the right, gets his head up. They can't stop him. He goes to the 22-yard line.
- 51:43Another eight-yard pick up for Zonka, and he is just today impossible to bring down.
- 51:49Zonka, 79 yards and a dozen carries.
- 51:54You know, that play just accents Zonka's power. He should have been stopped really for a one-yard gain by Gary Larson,
- 52:00but just plowed through him, just twisted and turned, ended up making eight or nine yards on the play.
- 52:10Paul just shy of the 21-yard line, so we'll call it second down and one yard to go.
- 52:20Pretty soon we'll start going to the Super Bowl record book here and look up the rushing figures,
- 52:25because Zonka is having a whale of a day. And here he goes again, straight up the middle, but he won't have anything this time,
- 52:30except Jeff Seaman, the little linebacker out of Stanford, their first draft choice, knocked him down.
- 52:38Alan Page that time played that play perfectly. Just shot to the inside, right where Zonka was running.
- 52:47Now it's third down and still a yard to go, a longer yard than it was before really.
- 52:53Seven minutes and seven seconds left in the second quarter of Super Bowl Eight on a foggy day here in Houston.
- 53:00The way this fog's rolling in, you'd think we were by a body of water, which we are not.
- 53:04Jim Kick is into the backfield now, and they've lined up into an eye formation with Kick the Deepman, Zonka up front.
- 53:10The handoff to Zonka. He barrels across the right side. He is stacked up right on the 20-yard line,
- 53:16and from here it's going to be very close. I think they're going to have the chains brought out.
- 53:22I think he's short a half a yard, Andy.
- 53:26The Dolphins think so too. As a matter of fact, they're not even going to bring the chains out.
- 53:30And so it looks from here as though it's going to be field goal time.
- 53:35Our first attempt of the day, Garrow Eupremian handles that shore for the Dolphins during the season,
- 53:42and he did it on 25 of 37 attempts for 113 points, counting his extra points.
- 53:48He didn't miss any. Earl Morrill is his holder. He will set it up at the 28-yard line.
- 53:54Almost straight away. 28 for Garrow, a sidewinder from Cypress. Kick is in the air. That kick is good.
- 54:0428-yard Garrow Eupremian field goal advances the score now with a timeout on the field.
- 54:12The score reads, Miami 17 and Minnesota nothing.
- 54:16You hit the road, and the road hits you. With loss of stability, loss of control, Gabriel makes a shocking difference.
- 54:31With shock absorbers that keep tires on the road, keep cars under control.
- 54:36Now there's Gabriel Striders, the heavy-duty shock guaranteed for as long as you own your car.
- 54:44Lifelong Striders are made for the way you drive. For a smooth ride, adjust to regular.
- 54:50For better ride control, adjust to firm. For extra-hard driving, there's extra firm.
- 54:56Regular, firm, extra firm. Triple-ride Striders, the shock you adjust for the way you drive.
- 55:03Maramont guarantees Striders against defects and wear-out for as long as you own your car.
- 55:08Present proof of purchase to dealer for replacement. Labor costs not included.
- 55:14Gabriel, for the shocking difference.
- 55:22Six minutes and two seconds remaining in the first half. Miami with 153 yards so far with their 17 points, and Minnesota held to only 27 yards.
- 55:31That last scoring drive took seven plays, 45 yards, and consumed another four minutes.
- 55:37Here's Garo Eupremian to kick off, and it bounces at the seven-yard line and goes over the head of Gilliam, who is back to receive it, and goes out the backside of the end zone.
- 55:48That'll be a touchback, and the Mikes will take over on the 20-yard line.
- 55:54Well, Tuck, we really didn't expect the game to be dominated by either side coming in.
- 55:58No, not this early, certainly. In Zonka, they're just, Minnesota's just unable to stop Zonka.
- 56:03In fact, the only time they have stopped him is when he doesn't have the ball, and then Morris has it, and he's gaining yards.
- 56:09The rushing record for the Super Bowl is 121 yards set by the Jets, Matt Snell, back in the 1969 game.
- 56:17The running backs are split for first down. Tarkenton going to give to Foreman.
- 56:21Foreman sweeping wide right gets by one tackler, but picks up only about a yard.
- 56:27Most of his yardage was laterally to the right. Chuck Foreman stopped by Doug Swift, left linebacker of the Dolphins.
- 56:37Under five minutes and 40 seconds remaining in the game, and a super halftime show is set for the fans here at Rice Stadium,
- 56:44as we have a sellout crowd of 71,882 watching on what for this time of the year has to be a cool day in Houston.
- 56:52It's 50 degrees. It's second and eight.
- 56:55Again, the backs are split, and Tarkenton drops back to throw this time, fires over the middle, and that ball is incomplete.
- 57:02It may have been tipped. It was intended for Chuck Foreman coming out of the backfield, and one of the Dolphins may have tipped it.
- 57:09Almost intercepted, Andy. It went right through Foreman's hands, as I see it from here. Minnesota really needs a big play right now.
- 57:15They've got to get their confidence back.
- 57:18I think Matheson touched that ball. Now in the third down conversions, the Bikes only one of four. They face one now.
- 57:28It's third and eight. Ball at their own 22-yard line.
- 57:32I'm looking for a pass to the tight end over the middle.
- 57:36Okay, Bob Tucker, let's see if it does develop that way. Tyke and Stu Voight, number 83, lines up on the right side with the backs split.
- 57:43Let's see if Tarkenton knows his number.
- 57:46Fran dropping back. He's looking that way, and the pass is to Voight, and it's caught.
- 57:51Stu is on the ground, and now he gets up, and he advances to the 39-yard line, and it's great to have a tight end as a color man.
- 57:59Seventeen-yard gain. How'd you know that?
- 58:02Well, that's that 3-5 defense, and you take your back. I've noticed they've done it before, and on the Giants, we do the same thing.
- 58:08You send the tight end over the middle down about 14 yards. Your backs come through the line and just spread out to the both sidelines.
- 58:13It just opens up that tight end.
- 58:16Advanced to the 39-yard line, and it gives the Vikings a first down, and certainly a morale boost, too, because there hasn't been much to cheer about from their side so far
- 58:25with four and a half to go here in the first half.
- 58:29Fake the handoff now. Lob pass coming out and dropped on the left side by Oscar Reed.
- 58:35The pass was thrown slightly behind Reed as he flared out on the left side.
- 58:41I said, right, I'm sorry, as they faked the running play, but Oscar could not hang on. Incomplete a pass.
- 58:51Second and ten. Great defense by Miami. Had Oscar caught that pass, I don't think he would have made but a yard.
- 58:59This is the Vikings' fourth possession of the game, and they have putted the three previous times they had the ball.
- 59:07The Dolphins have had the ball four times, and they have scored on three of those four. Two touchdowns and a field goal.
- 59:16Second and ten, Minnesota. Running play, Foreman. He is stopped, or does he get away?
- 59:22Vernden Herter had him behind the line of scrimmage, and then he managed to get back right to the line, but a great grab by Vernden Herter, the left defensive end from Central Iowa.
- 59:33Great play by Vernden Herter, and if he would have got outside, he would have had a lot of yards. Nothing but wide open spaces there for a good ten yards.
- 59:42Matheson back in for the Dolphins, and they take Colen out, the right linebacker.
- 59:49Pretty good job that time by Foreman, too, to avoid the trap in the backfield.
- 59:55Now it's third down and just shy of ten for the first. Tarkenton will throw for it. Looking to the right side, he delivers, and the pass is caught.
- 1:00:03Reception by Stu Voight, and he is tackled and brought down across midfield at the Miami 46-yard line.
- 1:00:15That again the same play, Andy, and with the tight end over the middle, what's going to happen is that free safety down the middle is going to have to come up and cover that tight end.
- 1:00:23And then what we can look for is a deep ball down the middle to the inside.
- 1:00:28Vikings rolling now with two consecutive third down conversions.
- 1:00:33The ball to the 46-yard line of Miami, and with 3.15 on the first half clock, the Vikings seemingly are rolling for the first time today.
- 1:00:42In motion comes Oscar Reed to the left. Tarkenton to throw out that way, and he completes the pass to Gilliam.
- 1:00:48He does a hook as he gets inside the 45, but he's not going to gain much yardage. He goes to the 43-yard line as he tried to hook around Mike Cullen but couldn't pull it off.
- 1:00:58Cullen, right linebacker, brings him down.
- 1:01:01That was a quick screen to Gilliam over here on the left-hand side, and we only had one blocker and two Miami defenders, so he had a cut back inside, did the best he could.
- 1:01:12I think he did a great job getting three yards out of that play.
- 1:01:15For the Vikings, this is their first trip into the Miami territory today.
- 1:01:21And very shortly, possibly after this play, we'll be getting the two-minute warning.
- 1:01:26Foreman going in motion to the right. Tarkenton dropped the ball, scrambled back, and picked it up.
- 1:01:33And he will not lose any yardage, but he was pounced upon immediately as Tarkenton dropped the snap from center that time, and the ball will now be spotted at the 45-yard line.
- 1:01:44Simply dropped the snap from McTinglehoff, one of the fine centers.
- 1:01:50Rookie Jim Lash, a receiver, is into the Viking lineup now.
- 1:01:55And we're getting the two-minute warning. A timeout on the field with the score of the Dolphins 17 and the Vikings nothing.
- 1:02:03Subaru, it saves you money. Subaru, it saves you gas. Subaru has front-wheel drive, and Subaru is built to last. It's got a quadrizonal engine, handles easy, too.
- 1:02:15We can sell it on gas mileage alone, but you get more car with a Subaru.
- 1:02:20Subaru is a car with a lot going for you, like front-wheel drive and around 25 miles to the gallon.
- 1:02:26Subaru gives you a peppy quadrizonal engine and around 25 miles to the gallon. Subaru gives you a rack and pinion steering, fully independent suspension, and around 25 miles to the gallon on regular gas.
- 1:02:40If you think we want you to remember how great Subaru gas mileage is, you're right, because Subaru has a lot going for you.
- 1:02:47And at around 25 miles per gallon, it'll keep you going. Test drive the new 74 Subaru today.
- 1:02:55It's got a quadrizonal engine, handles easy, too. We can sell it on gas mileage alone, but you get more car with a Subaru.
- 1:03:08Seventeen, nothing, Miami, and it would seem to me, Bob Tucker, that it would be very important psychologically for the Vikings to get something here with two minutes to go in the half.
- 1:03:17I think they have to put something on the board here, even if it is three, it's got to be something. Down 17 points going in at halftime coming out of the third quarter is a little bit big to chew off anyway, I think so.
- 1:03:31They're having their very best offensive thrust of the afternoon. They're on the 45-yard line, and of course you get a chance to work with the clock a little bit here with two minutes remaining in the half.
- 1:03:41Tarkington up over center, and he's going to throw it for it now. Tark back into the pocket, plenty of time, heaving long, looking for Gilliam. He's got him inside the 20-yard line.
- 1:03:50Gilliam sliding across the field from left to right, and he is stopped inside the 15-yard line. A 30-yard pass completion.
- 1:03:59This is the play I just spoke about, Andy, where that free safety did come up and cover the tight end over the middle.
- 1:04:05Tight end occupied him, and Gilliam was open down in the middle, down the post, where normally that free safety would be. He would have picked off that pass.
- 1:04:12The only one thing that went wrong with that play was that Gilliam could not get out of bounds, and so the Vikings have had to use a timeout here to stop the clock, but I'm sure they don't mind, because they are down at the Miami 15-yard line, and they need it badly.
- 1:04:25Brown is exploiting that Miami defense very well. Of course, this is one of the great things he does.
- 1:04:31Can we say that in the first part of the game, it was a feeling-out process for the Vikings?
- 1:04:38I think so. I think so. I think psychologically, Miami had a feel that Minnesota really had to come out and beat them, and Minnesota, in essence, really had to be the aggressive team, and I think they were feeling themselves out, and I think now they really have their feet on the ground, Minnesota, and they're going to play football, I hope, for the rest of the game.
- 1:05:01All right, one minute and 46 seconds remaining in the first half. We've told you that it's 50 degrees here today, and the average 30-year temperature on this date here in Houston is 53, so I guess we don't have it so bad today.
- 1:05:13First and 10 for the Vikings as Tarkenton splits his running backs. They probably set up several plays here. Fakes a running play, rolls into a hole and falls on the right side, inside the 10, and down to the 8-yard line. Tarkenton called his own number.
- 1:05:29This is something I've yet to see Frank Tarkenton do. He did call his own number. He had no intent of passing on that play, and I think it was a good play because as he has been rolling out to the right, the defense has been dropping off, and he just tucked the ball under his arm and just took off.
- 1:05:43You're right, Bob. He did not intend to pass at all, and now he needs only two yards for the first down. Oscar Reed to go for it, but not this time. Stacked up on the 10-yard line, and the Vikings have taken another time out to stop the clock, saving the precious time.
- 1:06:00A minute and 13 seconds left in the half, and the ball will be spotted now on the 8-yard line.
- 1:06:08Fran won at 6 that time, didn't he, Andy? I see him taking on those defensive people. Normally you'll see Fran, when he is running, to go down and take what he can get and try and protect himself in a way. He just took on those defensive people, looking for their goal line.
- 1:06:23He's desperate after 13 years, Andy.
- 1:06:25Yeah, that's right. I think we should talk a little about Fran because he's an amazing story. He's a brilliant person, and this is his first playoff experience this year in his 13th season out of Georgia, and he is hungry.
- 1:06:38He is, and I'm glad to see Fran have the opportunity to do this. He has a super team around him, a team that got him here. Of course, it works in both directions.
- 1:06:46The quarterback's got to help everyone else, and everyone else has got to help the quarterback. I know Fran is a little dejected right now. He can't put any, he's having difficulty putting points on the board.
- 1:06:57Miami has a 17-point lead on him, but this is a familiar situation to Fran Tarkenton, and he's the kind of quarterback you can count on to bring you back.
- 1:07:06Tarkenton has gone to the sideline to talk with Clint Grant, and Nick Bonacani, the middle linebacker and defensive specialist of the Dolphins, has gone over to talk to Don Schulis.
- 1:07:17So both sides have their strategy set now, third and three, with a minute 13 left in the first half at the eight-yard line of Miami.
- 1:07:28Tarkenton sets them up. Reid informing the running backs, and the handoff goes to Oscar, slanting off to the left side. He hangs onto the ball and gets just shy of the five-yard line.
- 1:07:39They'll spot it back at the six now because he kind of bounced forward there, and they will now be short a yard here.
- 1:07:48This poses a real problem now for Minnesota. They're down 17 points. They have to put something on the board. Do you go for three and get at least three, or, you know, seven is so much better.
- 1:07:59What are they going to do here? It looks to me like they are going to go for the seven points.
- 1:08:03Yes, they are, and incidentally, Bernd and Herter, the left defensive end of the Dolphins, left slightly coming off the field, replaced by number 72, Bob Hines.
- 1:08:13Six-yard line. It's fourth down. They're going to go for it. Let's see how they do it.
- 1:08:22It's a bunched-up formation, very tight. Handoff to Oscar Reid, and he will not get it.
- 1:08:28Backed up on the five-yard line. And the Minnesota Vikings turn the ball over to the Dolphins on down.
- 1:08:38I thought he had it, Andy. He bounced around inside, hit a couple of his own men, tripped over one of his own men, and really kept them from making the first down.
- 1:08:46This has got to hurt Minnesota. They had to put some kind of points on the board.
- 1:08:50It's easy to say right now in second guess, you go for the three, where you can put something on the board, but I can understand their decision. I would have probably, myself, gone for the seven.
- 1:09:00Actually, there was a fumble on that play in that stack up there, and Jake Scott made the recovery. Of course, the Dolphins would have gotten the ball in any event, and at the exact same position.
- 1:09:10So it's the five-yard line. Thirty seconds remaining in the first half, and I'm sure that we're not going to see very much out of the Miami Dolphins right here.
- 1:09:20They'll probably just run one play, and that's the first half end.
- 1:09:25And that one play will go to Larry Zonka, who heads straight up the middle, and it's been that kind of a day for Zonka. He still picks up about three yards.
- 1:09:35Well, I think we'll see time run out here, Andy, and Miami is certainly in the driver's seat.
- 1:09:41I think I misread Zonka's direction, too, a little bit. There was no gain on that play.
- 1:09:46That Minnesota drive was 13 plays, covering five minutes and 26 seconds, and the Vikings are playing out the strategy here by calling a timeout in hopes, of course, that there might be a fumble here and that they can pick up the ball and have one quick thrust at it.
- 1:10:01The game clock shows 12 seconds left here in the first half, a half which has been almost totally dominated by the Miami Dolphins, trying to win their second consecutive Super Bowl.
- 1:10:13Well, I don't think they'll be celebrating too much at halftime yet. This Minnesota team is one that can come back, but they've got to be very loose. I'm sure they're very delighted with that 17-point lead. Minnesota is going to have to change some things around.
- 1:10:28Orr Warfield has just come off to the sideline for the Dolphins. He will not be in this last play.
- 1:10:35And I believe he was replaced by Howard Twilley.
- 1:10:41No, they've taken him out for a double tight end. They have Mandich and Fleming both in the game.
- 1:10:48At the five-yard line, another handoff. Again, it goes straight up the middle. And Zonko with the carry. Again, he is not going to get very much, and this time time will run out.
- 1:11:02So there's the gun, sounding the end of the first half with the score, Miami Dolphins 17, Minnesota Vikings nothing.
- 1:11:11We're ready for the second half kickoff. This time the Vikings will get the ball first. Epermian approaches it, moving two-hour left.
- 1:11:19The deep men are Weston Gilliam. A low catch by Gilliam right at the goal, comes to the 10-15 point. He's got some room. The flag is down as he rolls up the right sideline.
- 1:11:28He's across midfield. He's at the 40. He's across the 35 of Miami, and he has driven out of bounds at the 34-yard line.
- 1:11:36But a flag is down way back, and it's going to go against the Vikings, a clipping call.
- 1:11:42We're going to have clipping against Minnesota, and I don't know. This is, you know, I've experienced this all year with things that are happening to the New York Giants.
- 1:11:51You know, we get our confidence back and come out enthusiastically and try and get something done. You get a great return like this all the way down to around Miami's 30-25-yard line.
- 1:12:01You end up with the football back on your own ten.
- 1:12:04That was a 65-yard return by Gilliam, and what's he have to show for it?
- 1:12:11A 15-yard penalty.
- 1:12:14So, officially, he'll be given a, what, a 10-yard return?
- 1:12:19I believe so.
- 1:12:20A 20-yard return with a penalty.
- 1:12:24Anyway, the ball is back on the 10-yard line.
- 1:12:30And it's first and 10-4. The Vikings have their own 20.
- 1:12:34They'll stay on the ground with Foreman trying to go outside right, and he'll gain three yards as he takes it out to the 13-yard line.
- 1:12:40Chuck Foreman, who averaged 4.4 yards every time he carried the ball during the regular season.
- 1:12:49Tim Foley made the tackle. Tim now playing at the left wingback spot.
- 1:12:55Mumford had started there. So, from the 13-yard line, the Vikings now have a second and eight.
- 1:13:07Chuck Foreman and Oscar Reed are the running backs, and they're out on the I-formation at the moment.
- 1:13:12Brandt targeted the quarterback, a man who has never been injured in 13 years, rolling to the right side, throwing back across the grain, nearly intercepted, finally caught by Foreman.
- 1:13:22But I want to tell you that Mike Colen almost caught that ball, and if he had, touchdown.
- 1:13:29Was that Colen? I believe it was Matheson.
- 1:13:32Well, whoever. We almost had seven points the other way.
- 1:13:36Boy, that's for sure.
- 1:13:38Oh, what a play.
- 1:13:41So, the ball stays at the 13-yard line.
- 1:13:50In third down conversions, four of eight for the Vikings. They've got one here.
- 1:13:56A third down, eight-yard situation. Will Tarkenton go to the air?
- 1:14:01Probably. Backs are split. Now Foreman heading in motion to the right side.
- 1:14:06Tarkenton rolls back that way. He wants the throw. He's being pursued by Fernandez, and he is dragged down by Manning.
- 1:14:13A loss back to the six-yard line. The second trap today against Tarkenton.
- 1:14:21Miami's team just seems unstoppable right now, and that really, that kickoff return and the setback really put Miami down, or Minnesota down.
- 1:14:31Well, they're going to have to punt now on a fourth and 13, and it's not going to be an easy punt.
- 1:14:37Eyshide will be back up against the end of the goal line.
- 1:14:40Actually, to make sure now, he's not standing quite back that far, but he's not back as far as he would like to be to make a punt.
- 1:14:47And we have Jake Scott, the short man for Miami. Dick Anderson, the deep man.
- 1:14:53Here's the punt. Super punt.
- 1:14:55Heading back across midfield. Great punt taken by Scott at the 45. Gets the midfield, gets to the other 45, and he is down at the 43-yard line of the Vikings.
- 1:15:05And so as a result of their stellar defensive play, Miami will have great field position.
- 1:15:11That was a 50-yard punt and a 10-yard return.
- 1:15:14Miami's still in the driver's seat right now with this great field position, as opposed to where Minnesota had the great field position.
- 1:15:21Again, going back to that penalty, I hate to harp on it, but it really set Minnesota back.
- 1:15:2843-yard line of Minnesota. So Miami takes over now. We're just underway here in the third grade, and it's been a Dolphins' day.
- 1:15:37This seems to be their bowl. Somebody wanted to rename this the Dolphin Bowl because they have dominated it the last couple of years.
- 1:15:45Here is Morris heading off to the left side. Seaman has a hold of him, and the game will be only one yard as middle linebacker Seaman drags him down.
- 1:15:53Second down and nine yards to go.
- 1:15:56These Dolphins, they've been here so often. Speaking of that interesting thing, I spoke to one of the novelty and souvenir salesmen in the hotel,
- 1:16:03and he was upset that Miami was here again because apparently the people who bought novelties and souvenirs one and two years ago brought the same ones back this year, so they're not really buying from him.
- 1:16:14He'd like to see two fresh teams every year, as right.
- 1:16:18Second down, nine yards to go. Running back, split for the Dolphins. They have a wide formation to the right. Warfield in the hole on the right now heads in motion to the left side.
- 1:16:26Greasy on a cross-buck play, gives to Zonka, and he's got pretty good yardage as he slams from left to right and gets to the 38-yard line where again Jeff Seaman is the man called to bring him down.
- 1:16:38And they're opening up big holes in the middle of that line. It's now third down and five yards to go.
- 1:16:44Zonka at that time looked like he was going to get more than he actually got. Minnesota closed very fast.
- 1:16:50In third down conversions, Miami three out of five.
- 1:16:54Best line from the Super Bowl is about left guard Bob Cuchenberg who has a footlong metal rod in the bone marrow of his left arm to repair a fracture, and Cuchenberg says,
- 1:17:02I'm getting better reception on my car radio. You'd believe that. I wonder if he's tuned in this afternoon.
- 1:17:09Greasy drops back, his seventh pass of the day. Wide left down the sideline. It is caught. Warfield caught the ball while skidding down.
- 1:17:19And the game goes all the way to the 11-yard line. A 27-yard pass play and an amazing catch by Warfield.
- 1:17:26Just a great pass by Greasy, a great catch by Warfield. And this is the second time that Greasy has thrown right into the zone of Minnesota.
- 1:17:34The first time it was broken up by Paul Kraus, but this time great reception by Warfield.
- 1:17:39You know, it's amazing. Greasy has only thrown the ball seven times today. He's good on six out of his seven.
- 1:17:45He's got 73 yards. It's almost like he doesn't need to pass, but when he does, it's successful.
- 1:17:53This Miami team is a real machine. First and 10 at the 11, which is really an advantage because they can maybe pick up a first down there where the yardage gets tough.
- 1:18:03Slanting off to the right side, the running back Larry Zunka, and he gets down to the eighth-yard line.
- 1:18:08Carl Eller, left defensive end, brings him down there. Help from Roy Winston, linebacker on that left side.
- 1:18:16And we'll call it the seven-yard line as the ball is across and cleanly into the territory beyond the eighth.
- 1:18:24Second down and seven yards to go. Zunka, 18 carries, 86 yards.
- 1:18:33Longest game of the day for Zunka was 16. And so the Dolphins, who scored on their first two possessions of the first half, are threatening to do it again.
- 1:18:45Only one setback now. Greasy wants to throw, looking to his left, now scrambling to his right.
- 1:18:50He's rolling. He still wants to throw. He's being chased. He is driven out of bounds at the five-yard line.
- 1:18:57A two-yard gain for Bob Greasy, who definitely wanted to throw that time, but never could discover a receiver. Roy Winston chased him out.
- 1:19:07Had a lot of time to throw that time, Andy. He did sprint. I thought he was going to run it.
- 1:19:12The daylight then slowed up a little bit, looking for a receiver. Decided none to warn anyone around.
- 1:19:20And Page finally ran him down or caused him to go out at the five.
- 1:19:25Now, key play. Third down, four yards for the first, but five yards from a touchdown.
- 1:19:33Nine-thirty-eight left to play here in the third period. And this team threatening to score.
- 1:19:38Miami already leads at 17 to nothing. Running backs are Morris and Zunka.
- 1:19:45Minnesota almost offside. Skipped to Morris. Wide left. He's being pursued. He's not going to make it.
- 1:19:50A flag is down, and Mercury Morris is driven out of bounds at about the 14-yard line.
- 1:19:56Bobby Bryant, the quarterback, drove him out, a flag thrown on the play long before the completion of the play.
- 1:20:04And it looks as though the penalty will be against Minnesota. It's a holding call against the Vikings.
- 1:20:13This is a crazy penalty down in here. How do we get a holding call against the Vikings?
- 1:20:18It would seem to me with the crack back, as Morris tried to run that left side, the penalty would be against Miami for clipping, but it's not.
- 1:20:25Miami has not been penalized today. For Minnesota, this is their fourth penalty and 37 yards.
- 1:20:32What a break for Miami. This is going to bring about a first down.
- 1:20:35The penalty called on number 58, Hilgenberg.
- 1:20:38We're told that right linebacker Wally Hilgenberg was the guilty man here.
- 1:20:43The ball being placed at the eight-yard line. And it's a first down. Defensive holding is an automatic first down.
- 1:20:55So, first and goal from the eight-yard line.
- 1:20:59Not bad, Andy, third and four. They lose three yards and get a first and ten.
- 1:21:04And he's doing that without a calculator, folks. Even though they make them down here in Texas.
- 1:21:12Jim Kick is in the backfield now.
- 1:21:15First and goal for Miami from the eight-yard line, Minnesota.
- 1:21:19They've taken Morris out, so they have the stronger of the two running backs muscle-wise in there right now, Kick and Zonka.
- 1:21:26From the eight.
- 1:21:30Breezy hands to Zonka. Behind, Kick's block goes to the five.
- 1:21:33And he is tripped up right short of the goal line. They'll mark it at about the two-yard line.
- 1:21:38Bobby Bryant stopped that play as it's getting very close to being another score for the Miami Dolphins.
- 1:21:44They have been so tough. And their drives are taking up time, too.
- 1:21:48Nine minutes and 15 seconds remaining here in the third period.
- 1:21:52Big hole that time for Zonka. He took advantage of every bit of it.
- 1:21:56He's been tough today. I don't know how you can imagine a running back being any tougher than he is today.
- 1:22:02Ninety-one yards he has now.
- 1:22:07Second down at the two-yard line.
- 1:22:11Breezy turning around to check his running backs. Looks as though he's almost talking to Zonka.
- 1:22:16Now he hands off to Zonka, heading right side. Touchdown, Larry Zonka!
- 1:22:21His second touchdown of the afternoon.
- 1:22:24And the Dolphins, if they hadn't already, have now established clear superiority in this game.
- 1:22:30And that was short power, Randy. He was hit on the two-yard line and just pulled his way right through.
- 1:22:36A two-yard score for Larry Zonka, who had taken one in from the five-yard line earlier in the game.
- 1:22:44Jim Kick scored a one-yard touchdown, and now it's Garo Yapermean in,
- 1:22:49with Earl Marl holding to try to add the extra points.
- 1:22:53Eight-forty-four left in the third period.
- 1:22:57Yapermean tries it. It is good.
- 1:23:01There's a pause in the action with the score of Miami Dolphins 24, Minnesota Vikings nothing.
- 1:23:09Give your hand to a friend, give your heart to your heart, give your cold, the contact the sooner the better.
- 1:23:19Hey, I'm back. How's that cold?
- 1:23:21Rotten. Get the contact?
- 1:23:23I got everything. Contact, cold tablets, endosylic.
- 1:23:26Oh, no.
- 1:23:27Honey, it's all cold medicine.
- 1:23:28Oh, sure, but it only takes one contact for up to 12 hours, continuous relief from sneezing, drips, congestion.
- 1:23:35For that I'd need six of your cold tablets.
- 1:23:37Two every four hours.
- 1:23:38Or three ounces of nighttime liquid.
- 1:23:40One every four hours.
- 1:23:41Or just one contact. The tiny time pills do it.
- 1:23:44Well, it's all cold medicine.
- 1:23:46Those others contain antipyretic analgesics, the liquid, antitusses, and alcohol. They're not in contact.
- 1:23:52Six or three or one. I'd choose the one contact.
- 1:23:56Me too. And I'll go with the cold.
- 1:23:58Give your cold a five-contact, the sooner the better.
- 1:24:05Six or three or one. When you catch a cold, take contact. Only as directed.
- 1:24:11At Houston with Bob Tucker, Andy Musser describing the Super Bowl, which is a dolphin affair right now.
- 1:24:1924 to nothing. Zonka, 20, carries 94 yards, two touchdowns.
- 1:24:23He ties an individual Super Bowl record, as does Miami, with three touchdowns rushing as a team.
- 1:24:29Yepeemian's kick will be a little short, taken on the five-yard line by Gilliam.
- 1:24:33Let's see if he can do it again. Gets away from a tackler at the 10. Comes to the 15.
- 1:24:37Slants back at the 20 toward midfield. Stacked at the 25-yard line.
- 1:24:43Gilliam trying to put some magic into it. He gets a 20-yard return.
- 1:24:47He had a 65-yarder nullified by a clipping call the last time around.
- 1:24:53And how frustrating this must be for Minnesota.
- 1:24:55Miami seeming to do things, anything, pass, run at will, and Minnesota fighting for their lives to get a first down.
- 1:25:02Let's see if Minnesota can do something about it here.
- 1:25:06Ball is at the 26-yard line of Minnesota. Running backs are split.
- 1:25:12Looks as though Dale lined up on the wrong side. Now he comes to the left and goes into the slot.
- 1:25:18Darkington dropping back into the pocket. Now comes up.
- 1:25:21I don't know whether this was a draw or not, but he gets to the 30 and gets stacked out there at the 31-yard line by Bob Matheson.
- 1:25:29If it was a quarterback draw, Bob, he went back awfully deep.
- 1:25:32No, I don't think it was a quarterback draw. He had every intention of passing that time.
- 1:25:36Saw a hole open up for him and took what he could get.
- 1:25:39And he got it up to the 31-yard line, a gain of five.
- 1:25:43Second down, five yards to go.
- 1:25:46And a lot of coming back to do for Minnesota, a team with a great season.
- 1:25:51Twelve victories and two defeats. Two playoff wins to go with it.
- 1:25:55But not much to hang their hat on today. Darkington flares one out to the right side.
- 1:25:59It's complete to Foreman, gets to the 35. Foreman's still on his feet at the 40.
- 1:26:03And Foreman is down to the 41-yard line. He'll have enough yardage for the first down.
- 1:26:09Five first downs for the Vikings today with 7.35 left in the third period.
- 1:26:21And wherever you're listening to our CBS Radio Network broadcast today, we certainly hope that you're enjoying it.
- 1:26:26Although, if you're rooting for the Vikings, that might be stretching a little.
- 1:26:35First down now for Minnesota. They had one good drive toward the end of the first half, but they just couldn't cash it in.
- 1:26:41Draw play. Up the middle comes Oscar Reed, gets across the 45 and is stopped now at the 47-yard line.
- 1:26:48As Reed picks up the yardage to the point where Jake Scott brings him down.
- 1:26:53He got six. Second down and four yards to go.
- 1:26:59Minnesota seemingly opening it up here. Quick screen play before.
- 1:27:04This previous play dropped the middle. Let's see what we have now.
- 1:27:08A very gray overcast day here in Houston. They're calling it fog.
- 1:27:14And generally unpleasant. Tarkenton again rolling out to the right.
- 1:27:19That pass was tipped, but it's complete to Oscar Reed out to the right side.
- 1:27:22There's a complete pirouette to try to get away from the tacklers.
- 1:27:25And does indeed get back to the line of scrimmage.
- 1:27:28He was fortunate he didn't lose any yardage on that one.
- 1:27:32And had there been a Miami interception there, again there would have been clear sailing ahead.
- 1:27:37And Miami is seeming to play all pass, all pass.
- 1:27:40They have that 3-5-3 defense in there as I see it most of the game.
- 1:27:45They're not playing Minnesota's run hardly at all. Basically pass.
- 1:27:49Of course in this situation down 24 points. It's not out of the ordinary.
- 1:27:55Looks like Matheson might have had a chance at that one.
- 1:28:00Third and five for the Vikings. And they'll go for it on the ground and they will not get it.
- 1:28:05Oscar Reed is stacked up and if anything Oscar lost the yard as he headed straight up the middle.
- 1:28:11And again Bob Matheson is there for the tackle.
- 1:28:16So at the 46 yard line the Vikings have been stopped.
- 1:28:22They had to punt. Well let's see. They have punted four of the five times they've had the ball prior to this.
- 1:28:31And the other time they lost it on downs.
- 1:28:35Minnesota is unable to make that big play.
- 1:28:38That's right Bob. Eyshite standing at his own 31. Gets the ball delivered to him and hits it fairly short.
- 1:28:44It's a high punt but not carrying too long but takes a great roll for the Vikings.
- 1:28:48As it hit on the 20 and now bounces all the way down to the 10 yard line.
- 1:28:52And then starts to roll back the other way. They will blow it dead at the 11.
- 1:28:56So that punt although it didn't do a very good job in the air it turns out to be a 33 yard punt.
- 1:29:02A time out on the field with the score. Wyoming Dolphins 24. Minnesota Vikings nothing.
- 1:29:10Subaru it saves you money. Subaru it saves you gas.
- 1:29:13Subaru has front wheel drive. A Subaru it's built to last.
- 1:29:17It's got a quadri-signal engine. Handles easy too.
- 1:29:20We can sell it on gas mileage alone but you can get more car with a Subaru.
- 1:29:26If you want to keep going these days you've got to have a car that makes every gallon of gasoline count.
- 1:29:32The front wheel drive Subaru gets around 25 miles to the gallon on regular.
- 1:29:37Some owners report getting better than 30.
- 1:29:40Now since the average car gets about 13 and a half miles to the gallon.
- 1:29:44If you switch to Subaru chances are good you could cut your gas cost almost in half.
- 1:29:49Test drive the 74 Subaru today.
- 1:29:52With its peppy quadri-signal engine that gets you around 25 miles to the gallon.
- 1:29:57It'll keep you going.
- 1:30:00It's got a quadri-signal engine. Handles easy too.
- 1:30:03We can sell it on gas mileage alone but you get more car with a Subaru.
- 1:30:10The Miami Dolphins have the ball back again with five minutes and three seconds left in the third period.
- 1:30:18They scored the only other time they had at this half.
- 1:30:20However this time they're back at their own 10 yard line.
- 1:30:23Staying on the ground and heading up the right side is Mercury Morris.
- 1:30:27And he will gain yardage to the 14 yard line.
- 1:30:29A pick up of four for Mercury.
- 1:30:32Carl Eller brings him down there. Mark it at the 14.
- 1:30:35And it's second down and six yards to go.
- 1:30:39I've seen a lot of one man tackles by Minnesota and it seems that if any of these running backs get beyond that one man tackler they've got a lot of open space.
- 1:30:47Miami blocking has just been super. Especially in shutting off the pursuit by Minnesota.
- 1:30:56Bob Greasy has been a master today.
- 1:31:00Handing off frequently to his running backs and passing almost perfectly.
- 1:31:04Here's Zonka again. Huge hole up the middle.
- 1:31:06And he gets it to the 28 yard line.
- 1:31:09He's got another first down.
- 1:31:11And Zonka now with a 14 yard pick up goes over the 100 yard mark.
- 1:31:16He has 108 yards now on his 21 carries this afternoon.
- 1:31:21And that's that same play we've seen so often this afternoon.
- 1:31:23A sprint out by the quarterback and a counter play back inside the Zonka.
- 1:31:27And Minnesota hasn't stopped it yet.
- 1:31:30The Zonka has been something.
- 1:31:32Spotted at the 27 yard line. A first down for Miami.
- 1:31:38And the crowd now here at Rice Stadium being told what we told you and that is that the Zonka is over 100.
- 1:31:45Here's a handoff that never got too far.
- 1:31:49He did get the ball to Zonka.
- 1:31:51And Zonka was stacked up in his tracks this time by Jim Marshall and Gary Larson.
- 1:31:56And two yards will be lost on that play.
- 1:31:59And quarterback Greasy was also tackled as the defense did not want to take a chance on the fact that he had not given up the ball.
- 1:32:06Jim Kek comes into the backfield as Morris leaves.
- 1:32:12Only one more football game left in the season and that's a week from today, the Pro Bowl game,
- 1:32:17which is always a little anticlimactic after a Super Bowl.
- 1:32:23And we want to mention that the Pro Bowl players are going to be practicing in San Diego even though the game is going to be played in Kansas City.
- 1:32:30The weather is so bad there. Here's a running play again to Zonka.
- 1:32:33Gets back to the 30 yard line.
- 1:32:38Middle linebacker Jeff Seaman is there to bring him down.
- 1:32:43The Super Bowl being anticlimactic, I wish I were going. It wouldn't be anticlimactic for me.
- 1:32:50Yeah, maybe I misspoke because the players who are involved probably don't feel that way.
- 1:32:54Many of them don't. It certainly is a good time.
- 1:32:56I've been to the Pro Bowl several times as a spectator and they have a nice week.
- 1:33:05Miami with a third and seven from the Dolphins 30 yard line.
- 1:33:09Formation is strong to the left with the back split.
- 1:33:11Griesi gives it to Zonka straight up the middle and he will not have the yardage for the first this time as he gets it out to the 33.
- 1:33:20But Paige and Larson are waiting for him there and the Dolphins are going to have to punt for only the second time today.
- 1:33:28They punted the third time they had the ball in the first half and they are putting here on their second possession here in the second half.
- 1:33:36They lead the game 24 to nothing.
- 1:33:40Bobby Bryant, a single deep safety for the Bikes.
- 1:33:45Seipel standing at his own 18 yard line awaiting the snap.
- 1:33:51It comes to him.
- 1:33:53And a high punt comes down at the 40 yard line of the Bikes then bounce forward and so it is down by the Dolphins.
- 1:34:03And there's a pause in the action with the score.
- 1:34:06Miami Dolphins 24, Minnesota Vikings nothing.
- 1:34:10Sinus flares up. Sometimes your whole face aches.
- 1:34:15When you need occasional help, get Sinov tablets, the Sinus medicine.
- 1:34:20Sinov works with a full dose of pure aspirin for sinus headache plus a sinus drainer for congestion.
- 1:34:27That's how Sinov helps sinus pain while you drain.
- 1:34:31Help sinus pain while you drain.
- 1:34:34Take Sinov only as directed.
- 1:34:37S-I-M-E-O-S-F. The Sinus medicine in the bright red box.
- 1:34:46With Bob Tucker and Andy Musser at the Super Bowl with 1.34 left in the third period.
- 1:34:51And after what was only a 24 yard punt by Seipel, the Vikings get another chance to start their way back into this thing as they have good field position, their own 43 yard line to start their drive.
- 1:35:03This is possibly their best field position all day.
- 1:35:07They have not had a drive here in the second half.
- 1:35:10They had a great 65 yard kickoff return to begin the half, but it was nullified by a clipping call.
- 1:35:18This is their third possession of the second half and they had to punt the previous two times they had the ball.
- 1:35:26At their 43, first and 10, Tarkenton splits his running backs.
- 1:35:35Taks the snap, rolls to the right, has good blocking, delivers over the middle, completes the foreman.
- 1:35:40He is at midfield and now he is brought down at the 49 yard line of Miami.
- 1:35:45And again Andy, this 353 defense.
- 1:35:48I think we're going to see a lot of passing, a lot of completion to the Minnesota backs.
- 1:35:54Charge on the pass from Tarkenton to Foreman.
- 1:35:58Nearing the end of period number three.
- 1:36:03Foreman has caught five balls today for 21 yards.
- 1:36:09A second and three here with again the back split.
- 1:36:12Ed Maranaro has the ball just into the game, runs around the right side.
- 1:36:16And he may be close to getting the first down before he was driven heavily backward by Manny Fernandez, another on the tackle.
- 1:36:23But it depends here where they spot that forward progress.
- 1:36:26He could have the first down as the second year man from Cornell, who was their second draft choice last year,
- 1:36:31enters the game as a running back for the first time.
- 1:36:34And the Vikings do indeed have the first down.
- 1:36:41You know Andy, you've really got to compliment this Miami front three and not the front four.
- 1:36:46They are playing their 353 and I would tend to think there would be more yardage gained by Minnesota running, but it just hasn't been that way.
- 1:36:55At the Miami 46 yard line.
- 1:36:58Vikings first and 10. They've got to get moving and they eat plenty.
- 1:37:02Tarkenton back to throw for it.
- 1:37:03Slanting to the left side off the fingertips of Foreman.
- 1:37:06And they were lucky that slipped to the artificial surface here before it could be picked up by Curtis Johnson, who is very near to making an interception.
- 1:37:16Second and 10.
- 1:37:19This by the way is the standard AstroTurf, although it is a new installation.
- 1:37:25They had AstroTurf here on this field before, but this particular copy was put down just prior to this season.
- 1:37:38Lights have been on since before the game started.
- 1:37:41And Marinaro is again in the Viking backfield along with Oscar Reed as Foreman is out.
- 1:37:47Second and 10.
- 1:37:50Marinaro considered to be a better receiver than Foreman.
- 1:37:53And Tarkenton is going to throw. Now he scrambles to his right.
- 1:37:56Now he releases and coming back to get that ball on an amazing recovery was John Gilliam, who came back at least seven yards to make that catch.
- 1:38:05And that's the end of the third quarter with the score.
- 1:38:09The Miami Dolphins 24, Minnesota Vikings nothing.
- 1:38:15Subaru it saves you money. Subaru it saves you gas. Subaru has front wheel drive. Subaru it's built to last. It's got a quadrizonal engine.
- 1:38:24Handles easy too. We can sell it on gas mileage alone, but you can get more car with a Subaru.
- 1:38:31Subaru is a car with a lot going for you, like front wheel drive and around 25 miles to the gallon.
- 1:38:37Subaru gives you a peppy quadrizonal engine and around 25 miles to the gallon.
- 1:38:43Subaru gives you a rack and pinion steering, fully independent suspension, and around 25 miles to the gallon on regular gas.
- 1:38:51If you think we want you to remember how great Subaru gas mileage is, you're right.
- 1:38:56Because Subaru has a lot going for you. And at around 25 miles per gallon, it'll keep you going.
- 1:39:02Test drive the new 74 Subaru today.
- 1:39:06It's got a quadrizonal engine. Handles easy too. We can sell it on gas mileage alone, but you get more car with a Subaru.
- 1:39:16Along with Bob Tucker, Andy Musser at Rice Stadium in Houston for the final 15 minutes of the Super Bowl.
- 1:39:25We haven't even talked about the possibility of going into overtime if there's a tie.
- 1:39:29And with the 24-0 score right now, I guess we'll save that one for later if at all.
- 1:39:34Minnesota hasn't had that much to cheer about, Andy. And it just goes to show you the poise and the confidence of the Miami team.
- 1:39:40They come out from the opening kickoff and just played their game of football and they scored 24 points doing it.
- 1:39:47No trickery really involved. They're just a super football team.
- 1:39:53They are the professional football version of the 1950-ish Yankees who dominated their era in baseball.
- 1:40:02And the Dolphins appear to be doing the same. They lost their first Super Bowl, you know.
- 1:40:06Came back and won the next time.
- 1:40:09And only the Green Bay Packers under Vince Lombardi have won consecutive Super Bowls, but the Dolphins appear to be en route to doing that today.
- 1:40:19Minnesota with the ball right now at the 44 of Miami. And Tarkenton again drops back into the pocket.
- 1:40:25He's had pretty good protection, fires over the middle, and he has a completion at the 28-yard line to Stu Voight, the tight end,
- 1:40:31which gives Tucker a chance to come in here.
- 1:40:34I like that play against the 3-5 defense. And you really do. His tight end does have a lot of room, especially with that free safety dropping back deep in the middle.
- 1:40:42You do have all kind of room in there. Stu made a very good catch on that one, too.
- 1:40:47Ball is at the 29-yard line, a first down.
- 1:40:55Seven first downs for Minnesota, but 17 for Miami.
- 1:41:00Again, Tarkenton wanting to throw, lost it softly to the right side, complete to Gilliam, and he steps out of bounds at the 20-yard line.
- 1:41:08Gilliam knew he had no room to work, so he just stepped out.
- 1:41:11Great timing pass by that time by Fran, and he let the ball go way before Gilliam had turned around.
- 1:41:16As soon as he did turn around, it was right there.
- 1:41:19A very softly thrown ball.
- 1:41:22Tarkenton today, 14 of 18 for 125 yards. You certainly can't complain about his percentage.
- 1:41:33But, as Bob mentioned earlier, no real big plays for Minnesota today.
- 1:41:39A second and one is coming up here with the running back split, and Tarkenton wants to throw for it, firing long to the left side,
- 1:41:45over the head of rookie Jim Lash from Northwestern, our third-round draft choice this year, who was out wide on the left but had no chance for the ball, covered by Curtis Johnson.
- 1:41:56Now, Bob, I would expect that Fran would go to the more typical call and go on the ground to pick up the down.
- 1:42:02That's third and one.
- 1:42:04I would think so, too. I think we might see something a little bit outside or off tackle here as opposed to up the middle for this one yard.
- 1:42:12They've brought an extra tight end in.
- 1:42:15Ball is right on Miami's 20-yard line.
- 1:42:17It's been the Miami defense today that has yielded at times but has never broken, as they lead 24 to nothing.
- 1:42:25And they stopped a tremendous drive earlier in the game, right at the end of the first half.
- 1:42:30Here's the play. Coming to the right side, Oscar Reed on the carry.
- 1:42:34He's got the first down and room to spare as he lugs it to the 13-yard line.
- 1:42:38Oscar the fullback, who averaged four yards every time he touched it during the regular season, was stopped by Jake Scott.
- 1:42:45But it is one of the few big plays for Minnesota today.
- 1:42:48And that's the play Minnesota's been trying to run all day, right up to that off-tackle position and trying to get outside with it.
- 1:42:54And this time Reed faked going outside, cut back in and then went out around the defender.
- 1:42:59Very good play.
- 1:43:00Reed has carried nine times for 20 yards.
- 1:43:03First and 10 at the Miami 13.
- 1:43:07Tarkenden sets the running backs wide apart.
- 1:43:13Droughts back into the pocket, looking to the left side.
- 1:43:16The pass is complete and driven out of bounds as Jim Lash at the three-yard line.
- 1:43:22And the rookie from Northwestern has made two key catches in this drive.
- 1:43:27That's the spot normally occupied by the veteran, Carol Dale.
- 1:43:31And we're going to have a measurement here to see if the bikes have another first down.
- 1:43:38They're going to be close from here, Bob, which seems as though they're a little short.
- 1:43:43They're a little short.
- 1:43:44I think they're short by about the length of a football.
- 1:43:47In fact, they're not even going to measure right now.
- 1:43:53Another good pass by Fran.
- 1:43:55And he's really having a pretty good day, I think.
- 1:43:57We are, by the way, located on the Miami side of the field.
- 1:44:01The fans over on this side are already declaring themselves number one,
- 1:44:04and there are beginning to be a few incidents in the stands here as we take a look at the next play.
- 1:44:10Tarkenden over Tinglehop, rolling to the right side.
- 1:44:13Plenty of blockers wants to take it himself.
- 1:44:15And goes!
- 1:44:17He looked like Larry Zonko that time, man.
- 1:44:19That was that play we saw in the beginning.
- 1:44:22Quarterback roll out.
- 1:44:25He's got it all under his arm and headed for that goal line.
- 1:44:30Fran Tarkenden from the three-yard line carries it in himself for the touchdown.
- 1:44:35And the Vikings are on the board for the first time today with 13.25 left in the game.
- 1:44:42It's been a frustrating afternoon for them, and they've got to feel a lot better now,
- 1:44:46although the comeback still has a long way to go.
- 1:44:48And here is Fred Cox, who kicked 33 consecutive extra points during the year,
- 1:44:53tacking on another one here with 13.25 left in the game.
- 1:44:58There's a timeout on the field with the score of the Dolphins 24 and the Vikings 7.

- 1:45:59Just say where and he'll take it from there.
- 1:46:02Delta is ready when you are.
- 1:46:05And Bob, with the Vikings trailing so severely here, despite their score,
- 1:46:13can we look for them to try an onside kick?
- 1:46:16I wouldn't be surprised.
- 1:46:17Miami is looking for it.
- 1:46:19Minnesota huddled up like they're going to do it, so let's see.
- 1:46:22Morris and Scott are the deep ones as Cox tries it.
- 1:46:25It is a swip kick.
- 1:46:26It goes across the 50.
- 1:46:27There's a scramble for the ball.
- 1:46:28And I think the Vikings have it.
- 1:46:30Minnesota has it.
- 1:46:31Minnesota has pulled it off.
- 1:46:34A swip kick by Brett Cox, and he put it almost perfectly.
- 1:46:38And Terry Brown, a reserve safety scramble across the 50 and picked up the ball.
- 1:46:45And the Vikings have new life, and Bob, it's got to charge them up.
- 1:46:48It's got to charge them up.
- 1:46:49And that kick really wasn't that good a kick by Cox.
- 1:46:52It was more of a line drive kick, and it looked like Mathison stuck his foot up.
- 1:46:58And now, Bob, we're getting an onside call on the play.
- 1:47:02I didn't even see the flag thrown, frankly, but it looks as though they're going to kick it again.
- 1:47:09And, of course, that's a tough assignment to ask a guy to go out there and do that again.
- 1:47:14So many things have to go right on the swip to make it work.
- 1:47:17You get the impression that today isn't Minnesota's day.
- 1:47:20Boy, that's true.
- 1:47:21You know, with a 65-yard kickoff return nullified by a penalty, and now a swip kick recovery nullified.
- 1:47:31The Vikes are really hurting.
- 1:47:33Now, of course, there's a five-yard penalty involved here, too.
- 1:47:36That doesn't mean so much.
- 1:47:37The ball goes back to the 35.
- 1:47:39And Cox will be called upon to try it again, if indeed that is their strategy.
- 1:47:44Here again, the ball only has to go 10 yards.
- 1:47:48So now recovery can be made at the 45 or across the 45 in their own territory if Fred can pull it off.
- 1:47:55Let's see what he does.
- 1:47:57Well, he lays into a low one.
- 1:47:59It's not a squib kick. It's picked up on the 18-yard line by Scott.
- 1:48:02Scott gets up to the 25, runs left at the 30, still on his feet at the 34-yard line,
- 1:48:08where he is nailed and nailed hard right at the 34.
- 1:48:12A 16-yard return by Scott.
- 1:48:18And Doug Sutherland made the tackle.
- 1:48:23Shula anticipated the on-site kick that time, I think, has run four or five men where people used to playing around with the football, all his backs and in.
- 1:48:33Dolphins getting the ball for the third time here in the second half.
- 1:48:37They scored once and punted once.
- 1:48:44They're getting it at their own 34-yard line.
- 1:48:48Breezy handing off to Zonka. He's been the big man today, and here come a few more yards as he goes straight up the middle.
- 1:48:54Zonka carrying to the 37-yard line.
- 1:48:59Pick up a three, second down, seven yards to go.
- 1:49:04Let's check Zonka's figures right now. 24 carries, 116 yards.
- 1:49:12Hank Goldberg is doing a good job on our statistics here today, and Harley Peterson is helping us out as a spotter,
- 1:49:18and Harley's doing a great job, even though he's not very happy about it. He's the business manager for the Vikings.
- 1:49:26Second and seventh for Miami, bringing Briscoe in motion back to the right side.
- 1:49:32And a handoff comes out the right way to Morris, but he's going to get nowhere.
- 1:49:36He even tripped over Zonka that time as he tried to get out to the right side, and that's about as fancy a play as you'll see Miami try to run.
- 1:49:43Roy Winston made a real good play on that one.
- 1:49:46He did, on a left-side linebacker.
- 1:49:49Well, Miami's into a third down and long right now, and really, what they didn't want, I think they would have been perfectly happy to pass the time
- 1:49:56from going down the field and run the ball, but now they're going to be, they are in the position right now, trying to gain 10 yards.
- 1:50:03I think they're going to have to go up top.
- 1:50:06They've been good on five of seven third down conversions. Jim kicked back into their backfield now, and this will be a tough one.
- 1:50:12It's a third and nine. Probably they will go up top to pass.
- 1:50:18Briscoe back into the pocket.
- 1:50:21Now rolling up the middle, gets to the 35, gets to the 40. He has dropped at the 40-yard line, and he will not have the first down.
- 1:50:29He made about four yards after dropping way back, and Wally Hilgenberg and Jeff Wright get together to stop him.
- 1:50:39A punt coming up by the Dolphins for the third time in the game and the second time here in this half.
- 1:50:50Seifel has made punts of 38 and 24 yards today.
- 1:50:56Bobby Bryant, the deep man for the Vikings, standing at his own 20. Seifel standing at his 25.
- 1:51:04Minnesota going for the block here.
- 1:51:07Couldn't quite pull it off. Seifel gets a beauty away. What a sailor.
- 1:51:11And Bryant is not going to feel this one, and it stops on the one-yard line, and the Dolphins have sounded it on the line.
- 1:51:17That was a tremendous kick, a 59-yard Seifel punt, and then they were able to down it before it went into touchback territory.
- 1:51:27There's a pause in the action with the score of Miami 24, Minnesota 7.
- 1:51:33The sun is shining, things are growing, things are going well with you and me. Future time together, a rich world right together.
- 1:51:48And things look like they can be. We're helping more than a million people, more than a million people who know the real you is now.
- 1:52:03And Metropolitan life, we are the brand new future, it's all about you, who is now.
- 1:52:12Metropolitan life knows how important the future is to you and your family.
- 1:52:17We've been preparing hard for the future so that your Metropolitan representative is qualified to help you prepare for it better.
- 1:52:24Because the better prepared you are, the better your future will be.
- 1:52:28Metropolitan life, we are the brand new future, it's all about you, who is now.
- 1:52:39Seifel!
- 1:52:41Andy Musser and Bob Tucker at Rice Stadium in Houston.
- 1:52:44The conclusion of the Super Bowl, 1047 left and a 24 to 7 Miami lead.
- 1:52:50Let's watch the action now as the Vikings take over at their own three yard line.
- 1:52:54Tarkin's standing in the end zone, fires it out to the left and it's complete at the 12 yard line.
- 1:52:59The Maranaro fights his way out to the 15 and that's about all he can get.
- 1:53:04And it's kind of scary to see a pass in that territory because if it's picked up, you know it's going right on in.
- 1:53:09It really is, but Fran really has to open things up now and he's got to take the chance, he's got to get upfield as fast as he can.
- 1:53:1612 yards on the pass lane.
- 1:53:19First down on the play, out to the 15 yard line is Maranaro and Tarkin combined for a gain of 12.
- 1:53:27Now it's the Vikings 15 yard line.
- 1:53:31Again Tarkin's in dropping back.
- 1:53:33He's got a chance to get a pass and he shoots to the left side, but he under throws this time and at the 35 yard line it's incomplete as Jimmy Lash was the intended receiver.
- 1:53:45Tarkin's an unhappy, complaining to the referee about something on that play.
- 1:53:52Tarkin's in his 16 of 22 this afternoon, 146 yards.
- 1:53:59Tarkin's in Miami with a 3-5 defense, anticipating pass all the way.
- 1:54:07Maranaro and Reed continue as the running backs.
- 1:54:10The reason I'm sure the foreman is out and Maranaro is in is because then is a better receiver.
- 1:54:15And here's a running play.
- 1:54:16Reed getting a great block and a good hole up the middle as he comes across the 20 and out to the 24 yard line as Oscar Reed got about as good a hole in the middle of the line as the Vikings have opened today.
- 1:54:28Frank Gallagher.
- 1:54:30Those linebackers just turned around and flew out of there and it was a quick draw play to Reed.
- 1:54:35In fact Reed was running forward and the linebackers were still had their backs to them and running the opposite way for an instant anyway.
- 1:54:43Third and one for the Vikings.
- 1:54:47He ball control play for them.
- 1:54:49They must hang on to it with nine minutes and counting here left in the game.
- 1:54:55Tarkin to Novartingelhoff takes it, gives to Oscar Reed, slants across the 25 out to the 26 and it looks like he's got the first down.
- 1:55:03And it took a second and third effort to do it.
- 1:55:08Right he appeared to be stopped and twisted and got it.
- 1:55:11So the Vikings keep the ball.
- 1:55:14On third downs.
- 1:55:16They're 50% down, six out of 12.
- 1:55:21But that clock has got to hurt them.
- 1:55:24They do get their game together.
- 1:55:25It's now under the nine minute mark and they trail at 24 to 7.
- 1:55:29At their own 26.
- 1:55:31Tarkin getting a big rush but steps up and passes complete to Reed and then he drops the ball.
- 1:55:37Oscar had it at the 30 and as he was tackled it squirted out of his arms.
- 1:55:43Doug Swift, the linebacker had him and he dropped the ball.
- 1:55:48That three man Miami rush is really causing Tarkin a lot of problems.
- 1:55:52Minnesota has five men to block three and those Miami defensive front three are really doing the job, believe me.
- 1:56:01Reed leaves the field now and he is replaced by the veteran Bill Brown in the backfield for the first time.
- 1:56:0713 years out of Illinois and as tough a running back in his time as there ever was.
- 1:56:14From their own 26, Marin Arrow and Brown.
- 1:56:17But Tarkin tends to throw plenty of time over the middle.
- 1:56:20He completes it to Brown at the 34 yard line and Brown is downed at that point.
- 1:56:26Swift and Matheson combining for the stop.
- 1:56:32That play was good for nine but Minnesota is still going to be short of the first.
- 1:56:37It will be third on a long one.
- 1:56:42And the clock running.
- 1:56:44Bob Hines coming in for the Dolphins on defense and leaving the field is Matheson.
- 1:56:51Let's see if they stay on the ground.
- 1:56:53It's a running play.
- 1:56:55It went to Brown and he went straight up the middle and I don't know.
- 1:56:58I believe he's going to have it.
- 1:57:05Yes, they are signaling first down.
- 1:57:08Eight minutes even.
- 1:57:09Lots to play on the game but that clock is running and the Dolphins have the lead 24 to 7.
- 1:57:15They scored the first two times they had the ball in the first half.
- 1:57:18Led 17 to nothing by halftime.
- 1:57:21Added a touch in the third period and they've just dominated the game.
- 1:57:27That's the best way you can say it.
- 1:57:29Tarkin wants to throw.
- 1:57:30Has time.
- 1:57:31Firing long left and one ahead.
- 1:57:33A fly goes down at the 40 yard line as Marin Arrow was the intended receiver.
- 1:57:38But he was nailed by Tim Foley a clear split second before the ball was in his arms.
- 1:57:45The most obvious passing experience I've ever seen.
- 1:57:49We don't need the replay of that one, do we?
- 1:57:55Tim Foley who has been injured and out of the Dolphins lineup several times this year probably has his timing just a little bit off.
- 1:58:02And well, he has the satisfaction of getting a hit.
- 1:58:05Minnesota is going to have to get some bigger yards out of this drive.
- 1:58:09I'm sure Miami doesn't mind having Minnesota come down and gain three, four, five, six yards at a pop.
- 1:58:15They're losing just too much time.
- 1:58:16They're not going to get back in the game doing it.
- 1:58:18And by the way, that's the first time today that Miami has been penalized.
- 1:58:23First and 10 for the Vikings.
- 1:58:25Tarkin's inflaring it out to the right side.
- 1:58:28It goes to Marin Arrow across the 45, across midfield, down the other 45, inside the 40.
- 1:58:33Playing a tug of war with Johnson and he gets dragged all the way down to the 32 yard line.
- 1:58:40And maybe some more yardage ball beyond that.
- 1:58:44That was incredible, the tug of war going on between Marin Arrow and I believe Curtis Johnson.
- 1:58:50A 27 yard game.
- 1:58:52Marin Arrow made a super run on that play.
- 1:58:54And you know, they put him in there for the passing game and they feel he is better in the passing game than in the running game.
- 1:59:00But right there he showed me quite a bit in his running.
- 1:59:04A first down for the Vikings who are finally rolling but probably too late.
- 1:59:10They're at the Miami 32 yard line.
- 1:59:13Tarkin's going to stick to the air.
- 1:59:15He's heaving long to the left side.
- 1:59:17Way, way into the corner.
- 1:59:18It is incomplete.
- 1:59:19Lash the intended receiver.
- 1:59:22And he threw double coverage from Johnson and Scott in the corner.
- 1:59:26Scott number 13 and Johnson 45, preventing the stolen.
- 1:59:32Now second and 10, back at the 32 yard line.
- 1:59:36Lash after that long run goes to the bench and Carroll Dale takes his place.
- 1:59:42Scott made a fine play for Miami right there.
- 1:59:44Fran rolling to the right and looking like he was going to throw a short pass to the right.
- 1:59:48Two cross country really, deep to the left.
- 1:59:51And Scott turned around and got back there plenty of time.
- 1:59:55Seemingly a long huddle by the Vikings.
- 1:59:58And the Miami crowd, which is closest to our microphone, shouting defense, defense.
- 2:00:04Maranaro and Brown continue as the setbacks, mostly for blocking.
- 2:00:09Tarkin tends to throw plenty of time.
- 2:00:11Over the middle he goes and it is incomplete at the goal line.
- 2:00:15He threw that ball in between Voight and Gilliam.
- 2:00:18Apparently Voight was the intended receiver but it fell incomplete.
- 2:00:22Tarkin's upset with himself right here on this play.
- 2:00:28The ball I think slipped off his fingers and he had Voight open.
- 2:00:31The ball was just wobbling around and went way over his head.
- 2:00:36Tarkin's in with a Super Bowl record now of 18 completions today out of 27 tries.
- 2:00:42A further example of how statistics can be misleading because his team is hurting.
- 2:00:48He personally scored the Vikings' only touchdown when he rushed it in.
- 2:00:52And now he faces a third and ten situation.
- 2:00:54Lash back as the wide receiver again on the left side.
- 2:00:58Undoubtedly Tarkin did the throw here as he dropped back.
- 2:01:02Looks left, waits, now fires left side and it is intercepted at the goal line.
- 2:01:07Curtis Johnson has the ball on the interception.
- 2:01:10The first turnover of the day.
- 2:01:12He is dragged out at the ten yard line as Tarkin has topped up the ball for the first time.
- 2:01:18Gilliam was the intended receiver but Johnson picked it off.
- 2:01:22I don't know Andy but it looked to me like Gilliam stopped running coming across the field.
- 2:01:26It looked like a real good pass and for some reason or other Gilliam just pulled up and the interception was made.
- 2:01:34The first interception we've had today.
- 2:01:36There have been a few fumbles but they've, well one of them was turned over actually.
- 2:01:41Jake Scott made a recovery for the Dolphins but it came with only 30 seconds remaining in the first half
- 2:01:48and it was on a fourth down play when the ball would have gone over anyway.
- 2:01:51So this is our first pure turnover of the day.
- 2:01:56And with that turnover it looks like some of our fans here are making an early exit.
- 2:02:02You know some of the people have been taunting us from right below our booth here thinking apparently that we are the Viking broadcasters.
- 2:02:09And I wish my friend Joe McConnell who is the Minnesota broadcaster would stand up.
- 2:02:15At the ten yard line.
- 2:02:23Miami taking over and they will now try to go onto a drive here that will probably stay on the ground and run the clock.
- 2:02:32Sanka up the middle and he gains even more yardage.
- 2:02:35He's amazing. He goes across the 15 to the 17. Jim Marshall brings him down.
- 2:02:40And Sanka has just had a tremendous day. We now have him at 124 yards on 25 carries.
- 2:02:49It is the record. We were talking earlier about Matt Snell having held the old record at 121 yards set in 1969.
- 2:02:58So give on that carry gives Sanka the new record. Make it a hundred and twenty three as we recalculate.
- 2:03:06Second and three for Miami.
- 2:03:12Another running play again at Sanka sliding to his left getting across the 20 to the 22 yard line.
- 2:03:19Alan Page and Jeff Seaman together to bring him down. And it hasn't been easy to bring Sanka down today.
- 2:03:25You know it's just been pure pleasure to watch him run. It's amazing a man that size who does have all the power of a bull and uses it is yet agile and is able to pick his way into that line.
- 2:03:37If something gets blocked up he can reverse his field so quickly and just pick his way through there and ends up with substantial yardage.
- 2:03:45The crowd cheering because they've been told to play late which you already know and that is about Sanka's Super Bowl rushing record.
- 2:03:52A first and ten for Miami.
- 2:03:57Running play to kick. He slams along the left side and it's obvious now Bob that they are trying to just consume this clock which has less than five minutes running.
- 2:04:07They're going to just try and use some time as they go up the field here. They'd like to bring it down to the two minute mark and if they have to give the football up then well I think that would be you know they'll be pleased with that.
- 2:04:16Certainly like to keep it to the entire four thirty nine on the clock now.
- 2:04:22So Fran Tarkin in his first trip to a Super Bowl and in championship play will be frustrated but he's not a quitter.
- 2:04:29But it's going to be a tough one to swallow because he wanted this one very badly and the Dolphins are going to win this one almost for sure.
- 2:04:36Sanka gets another try. Won't get too much this time. Stacked at the twenty four yard line in his own territory by Eller and Siemens. But that clock just keeps moving relentlessly on.
- 2:04:49Four ten and running right now. Miami very conservative now just running the ball right into the line.
- 2:04:56Let's pause five seconds for stations to identify themselves on the CBS radio network.
- 2:05:01WBBM Chicago News Radio 78.
- 2:05:09Miami trying to become only the second team to win back to back Super Bowl something that is not easy.
- 2:05:16Green Bay did it at the inception of the AFC NFC Championship Series which at that time was the AFL NFL.
- 2:05:24And off to Larry Saka and a big hit against Greasey in the backfield and a fly was thrown.
- 2:05:31Looked to me like Alan Page was in on Greasey and he really leveled him and a fly was thrown away from the play.
- 2:05:42Just typical of Minnesota all afternoon. They finally did stop that play up the middle with Sanka where the quarterback rolls out and gives that counter back.
- 2:05:50And Page just chased after Greasey and just threw him, bounced him really off the turf and Alan is very upset.
- 2:05:56They're going to get a fifteen yard penalty. Yeah. It's going the other way though.
- 2:06:00The penalty here is going to be against Cuchenberg for trying to retaliate against Page.
- 2:06:06I beg your pardon. No. We saw Cuchenberg hit Page but the penalty does go against Minnesota.
- 2:06:12So it is on the hit of Greasey.
- 2:06:17Put the ball at the forty yard line. Move it back to the forty.
- 2:06:22And Twilley replaces Briscoe as a wide receiver for the Dolphins.
- 2:06:28But with that penalty Miami should certainly get the ball down to two minutes in their position.
- 2:06:34And they're announcing that the penalty was on Page.
- 2:06:42Keep it on the ground they do. And the running back again is Sanka heading out to the forty five yard line.
- 2:06:50Stopped there by Marshall and Wally Hoganburg.
- 2:06:55Paul Warfield being relieved of duty now as he comes to the sideline.
- 2:07:00Getting a big hand. Sanka today twenty nine carries on to thirty five yards.
- 2:07:05Let's take a look at Warfield. Two receptions for thirty three yards.
- 2:07:13Dolphins at their own forty five. A second and six situation faces them.
- 2:07:19Two fifty six left in the game.
- 2:07:24Kick gets the hand off. Starts out wide right. Cuts back inside.
- 2:07:28And gets just shy of midfield. He will be leveled at the forty nine yard line in his own territory.
- 2:07:35And the man who did the leveling. Basically Gary Larson also Paul Krauss.
- 2:07:43Two minutes and forty five seconds left in the game.
- 2:07:47A game clearly dominated by the Dolphins almost from the outset.
- 2:07:50Their early running plays were the plays that dominated the game and set the pattern for this one today Bob I'd say.
- 2:07:57I don't know what's going on here right now. There hasn't been a timeout called.
- 2:08:04It's not the two minute warning yet.
- 2:08:07There might have been a penalty on this play Andy.
- 2:08:10They didn't see a flag again but they have called a personal foul against Miami.
- 2:08:15And also against Minnesota.
- 2:08:17Yeah so it's going to be nullified. The play will be nullified.
- 2:08:23I should say the penalty is nullified. The play stands as is.
- 2:08:28The penalties are off setting.
- 2:08:33We've had only one field goal attempt today. It was successful in the second quarter.
- 2:08:38Yefremian lined up for a twenty eight yarder and made it.
- 2:08:41Now they're bringing the chains on the field to see if the Dolphins have their first down here.
- 2:08:46I think the players who made up that penalty are Kuchenberg and Page.
- 2:08:50I think they're having their own battle on the field. They're really going at it.
- 2:08:57The penalties were called after the play. They are short. Just inches short of the first down.
- 2:09:03Third and inches.
- 2:09:05I think Page is just furious he was called for a penalty earlier against Greece.
- 2:09:10Kuchenberg is trying to help out and retaliate a little bit.
- 2:09:13We're seeing a little action. In fact we're seeing a lot of action.
- 2:09:19On the field.
- 2:09:26On the fifty yard line.
- 2:09:33Five of nine and third down conversions.
- 2:09:35And now cracking across the Viking line appeared to be Page and Miller followed him across too.
- 2:09:42So flags were thrown immediately and the play never got going.
- 2:09:47Offside called against Minnesota.
- 2:09:50And this is going to give Miami another first down.
- 2:09:54Well we'll have to get the locker room conversation on that but there may have been some deception down there to try to draw that.
- 2:10:00Six penalties against Minnesota. Good for sixty yards.
- 2:10:10Twenty first downs for the Dolphins.
- 2:10:16Two forty five left.
- 2:10:18The clock never got started on that last play so now the ball is at the forty five of Minnesota.
- 2:10:25Miami splitting its running backs. Jim Tick getting a carry but he is into a huge pile of humanity along that left side of the line.
- 2:10:33And will gain very little yardage. About a yard.
- 2:10:37Gary Larson credited with the tackle on that.
- 2:10:42Second down and nine yards to go and we are rapidly approaching the two minute mark.
- 2:10:47You know Bob you have to say now in all honesty it's amazing how often this championship game between the two best teams in football has been a less than competitive affair.
- 2:10:58You know and I really thought this game was really going to accent the true meaning of Super Bowl where we had we have really two very powerful teams and it's just unfortunate that Minnesota couldn't get it together.
- 2:11:11Sticking again to the ground Larry Zonko wide to the left side.
- 2:11:15Zonko across the forty yard line and down to the thirty eight.
- 2:11:20And that will be the last play before the two minute warning. Actually the clock stopped at one fifty eight.
- 2:11:25Hilgenberg and Bryant getting together to bring him down.
- 2:11:31Taking a look at some of the figures now.
- 2:11:34Zonko in rushing.
- 2:11:35Ferdy carries one hundred and forty one yards.
- 2:11:39So he clearly has the record. He's got the twenty yards on the record right now because Matt Snell's old record was one hundred twenty one.
- 2:11:46And he has also tied the record for the most attempts.
- 2:11:50Snell has tried it thirty times back at sixty nine and he's got thirty right now.
- 2:11:55And you can hear the chant in front of us Bob we're number one.
- 2:11:58We're number one and I don't know who's going to beat this Miami team Andy.
- 2:12:03Maybe the Giants will be here next year.
- 2:12:06Well Minnesota just walking around out there right now.
- 2:12:13They're really frustrated and I'm sure that they expected to give a better game than this.
- 2:12:19Last year Miami beat Washington fourteen to seven but really it was a clear domination of the game.
- 2:12:25And that final score would indicate the year before Dallas defeated Miami handily by a count of twenty four to three.
- 2:12:33Probably the best Super Bowl competition wise was in nineteen seventy one when Baltimore defeated Dallas sixteen to thirteen.
- 2:12:40Bob you have a note?
- 2:12:41Yes and here's something Andy Larry Zonko has been named winner of Sport Magazine's Most Valuable Player Award for Super Bowl eight.
- 2:12:48He will receive a charge of fourth card a luncheon to be held in New York City.
- 2:12:52He succeeds teammate Jake Scott of the Miami Dolphins.
- 2:12:55Previous Super Bowl winners were in nineteen sixty seven Bart Starr of Green Bay and in nineteen sixty eight again Bart Starr of Green Bay.
- 2:13:04Nineteen sixty nine Joe Namath of the Jets.
- 2:13:07Nineteen seventy Len Dawson of Kansas City.
- 2:13:09Nineteen seventy one Chuck Howley of Dallas.
- 2:13:12Seventy two Roger Stavack and of course last year Jake Scott.
- 2:13:17So congratulations to Larry Zonko.
- 2:13:19Andy certainly deserves it.
- 2:13:21I don't know how you could vote for anybody else the way things have gone here today.
- 2:13:24Sending Twilley in motion toward the left side but it will be a handoff to Zonko who now has the record for carries as this is his thirty first attempt on the thirty second attempt on the afternoon.
- 2:13:37And he lugs the football to the thirty five yard line of Minnesota.
- 2:13:42Alan Page and Jim Marshall bring him down at that point.
- 2:13:46Clock running and fresh as little the Vikings can do about it now.
- 2:13:50What a super job the Miami offensive line is doing.
- 2:13:54You know Minnesota was keen on Zonko and they just were unable to stop them all day.
- 2:14:00And that's a credit to the blocking up front.
- 2:14:02They got the ball on this drive by way of that interception.
- 2:14:05They are now going for a fourth and one.
- 2:14:07Miami trying to keep the ball.
- 2:14:09They don't want the Vikings to touch it again.
- 2:14:10So here they go fourth and one at the Minnesota thirty five Zonko the big guy.
- 2:14:15Of course he's got it.
- 2:14:16What would you expect?
- 2:14:18The whole kind of day Zonko is having today had to get it otherwise the Hollywood scriptwriters would have had to change it when they make the film of it.
- 2:14:24That's right.
- 2:14:25And he just took a dive over the line and I think if he would have just decided to get big yards he could have got it.
- 2:14:30There was a big hole right up through there.
- 2:14:32What a football player.
- 2:14:36We mentioned it now Zonko is being taken from the game to give the fans a chance to give him their own personal ovation.
- 2:14:44He's getting it.
- 2:14:45He deserves it.
- 2:14:48Don Nottingham the human bowling ball takes his place.
- 2:14:53He suffered a broken nose on a one punch fight on New Year's Eve.
- 2:14:57Jim Kick on the carry gets inside the 30 and is down at the 28 yard line.
- 2:15:02As Kick has also done a very workman like job today.
- 2:15:05And Andy I think that's going to be the last play of the game.
- 2:15:08We have only 19 seconds left to go and we are about ready to crown the Miami Dolphins winners of Super Bowl 8.
- 2:15:18Miami's really substituting now.
- 2:15:23They're counting down four three two one.
- 2:15:27The game is over and the Miami Dolphins are the champions of the pro football world.
- 2:15:33They have won the Super Bowl for the second time running.
- 2:15:36Only the second team ever to do that.
- 2:15:38Way back at the start of the series the Green Bay Packers did it by defeating Kansas City at Oakland of the A.F.L.
- 2:15:44Well that's the end of the game and the final score is the Dolphins 24 the Vikings 7.
- 2:15:50We'll be back with a recap in a moment.
- 2:15:54Don't let that dream vacation turn into a nightmare.
- 2:15:58Those extra added loads on your camper or trailer or boat or even bulky luggage.
- 2:16:02They can all start your car tilting and swaying leave you fighting for control.
- 2:16:07That's no vacation for you.
- 2:16:09So you put that load where it belongs.
- 2:16:12You put the load on air adjustable Gabriel hijackers.
- 2:16:15Take a load off wagon.
- 2:16:17Get a lift you see.
- 2:16:20Take a load off camper.
- 2:16:22And put the load right on me.
- 2:16:27Gabriel hijackers the air adjustable shock absorbers you feel like a tire.
- 2:16:32Gabriel hijackers can lift loads up to a thousand pounds on campers wagons and cars while helping to maintain a safe level ride.
- 2:16:40That's hijackers to take a load off your mind as well as your camper wagon or car.
- 2:16:46Take a load off wagon.
- 2:16:49Get a lift you see.
- 2:16:51Take a load off camper.
- 2:16:54Gabriel hijackers the shocking difference.
- 2:17:00We're Bob Tucker and Andy Muster at Rice Stadium in Houston to wrap it up.
- 2:17:04And looking back over it there was a clear domination as we've been telling you by the Dolphins.
- 2:17:08Although strangely enough the second half was a standoff at seven points apiece.
- 2:17:12So we've got to go back to the first half to find out where this game was won.
- 2:17:15And you have to go right back to the very beginning of it because the Dolphins scored the first two times they had the ball.
- 2:17:20Zonko on a five yard touchdown and they got it back by way of a punt.
- 2:17:25And Jim Kicks scored on a one yard touchdown.
- 2:17:27They later after having to punt the ball on the next series themselves added a field goal to give them a 17-0 halftime lead making the second half a one touchdown standoff for each side.
- 2:17:37Let's get some observations on the game from Bob.
- 2:17:40Well as far as Minnesota's concerned you know and I know the feeling only too well.
- 2:17:44They were just unable to put it together this afternoon.
- 2:17:47They were not productive on offense.
- 2:17:50Their defense was unable to control Miami's offense.
- 2:17:53And it just resulted in a scoring opportunity after scoring opportunity for Miami.
- 2:18:00And of course Miami took advantage of their field position right off the bat.
- 2:18:04As we mentioned they scored twice right in the first quarter.
- 2:18:07Both times they got the football which had to set Minnesota back.
- 2:18:11And I think they lost their poise a little bit.
- 2:18:14And they tried to regain their confidence as they went back on the field.
- 2:18:17I think feeling their way, hoping something would happen, hoping someone would make the big play.
- 2:18:22And it just never came about.
- 2:18:23They had their opportunity I think for a big play in the opening of the second half when they ran down.
- 2:18:28They took the opening kickoff.
- 2:18:31Gilliam took it all the way down to the Miami 25 yard line only to be nullified by a penalty which brought it back to their own ten.
- 2:18:38Coming out the second half and starting like this was just typical of the day Minnesota had in front of them.
- 2:18:45Miami on the other hand were just the powerful super football team that they've always been in the past.
- 2:18:54And they truly are the super champions and deserve the Super Bowl 8 crown really.
- 2:19:02I don't really know who's going to beat them.
- 2:19:04You know they just seem to pass at will and run at will.
- 2:19:08No one can stop them.
- 2:19:10I think if they would have tried harder and they didn't have such a lead in the beginning they could have scored more points.
- 2:19:15That's possible.
- 2:19:16The next team to get a chance to beat them by the way will be the college All-Stars.
- 2:19:20After we take a few months off the All-Stars will get their shot at the Miami Dolphins and it's going to be tough.
- 2:19:27Such a machine they are that this afternoon they were penalized only one time for a total of four yards.
- 2:19:33And of course the individual hero has to be Larry Zonka.
- 2:19:36He received the game MVP award as voted by Sport Magazine.
- 2:19:40And he winds up according to our figures here with 145 yards on 33 attempts.
- 2:19:46Both of them are new Super Bowl records.
- 2:19:49Bob Breezy on the other hand not called on to pass all that often.
- 2:19:53He passed the ball today only seven times but he completed six of them.
- 2:19:57In the conference championship victory over Oakland he put the ball in the air only six times.
- 2:20:01So such a great team surrounding Breezy that his skills really haven't been called on that often.
- 2:20:07He had 73 yards in the air today.
- 2:20:09Fran Tarkenton of course particularly passing so frequently toward the end of the game wound up putting it in the air 18,
- 2:20:18or excuse me, completing 18 of 28 attempts for 182 yards.
- 2:20:24He also had the one interception at the end which the Vikings, which the Dolphins then took possession of the ball following that interception and never again gave it back.
- 2:20:34And there were six minutes and 24 seconds left at the time that happened.
- 2:20:38And that was the kind of day it was for Miami here today.
- 2:20:41So our congratulations to the Dolphins.
- 2:20:44It's been a long football season through 17 games including the championship here.
- 2:20:49And they certainly deserve everything that they have coming to them which is certainly a well of a party beginning right about now.
- 2:20:55Bob, it was fun working with you and I congratulate you for doing a great job when you first came as an analyst here
- 2:21:00and we'll look forward to seeing you back in the field next year.
- 2:21:02Thank you very much Andy and I wish we could be more controversial.
- 2:21:05I wish we had a little bit more even game on the scoreboard if it would have been a little bit more fun for us.
- 2:21:10We didn't have too much to fight about today, did we?
- 2:21:12No, I'm glad our booth wasn't on the Minnesota side of the field.
- 2:21:15That was one of the things that really worked out well.
- 2:21:17At least we had the Miami fans in the background.
- 2:21:20So there you have it.
- 2:21:21The 1974 Super Bowl champion is Miami over Minnesota.
- 2:21:26The final score again 24 to 7.
- 2:21:28Andy Muster along with Bob Tucker.
- 2:21:30Our spotters have been Harley Peterson and Hank Goldberg.
- 2:21:34Our technician Bob West from KTRH, our CBS radio affiliate here in Houston.
- 2:21:39And our executive producer of the game, Frank Miller.
- 2:21:42All of us saying so long.
- 2:21:44Let me present now the commissioner of the National Football League, Pete Rozell,
- 2:21:48to make the presentation to honor Mr. Joe Robby and the Don Schiller.
- 2:21:52I think the visual impact of today's event, Don, makes any verbal description quite inadequate.
- 2:21:59It was obviously an extremely impressive win and tremendous credit to the entire organization.
- 2:22:05Joe, the group you put together, starting with this outstanding coach and an amazing group of football players.
- 2:22:12Congratulations and I think that it certainly equals last year even though you went clean last year.
- 2:22:19Your Super Bowl win I think was more convincing today.
- 2:22:21Marvellous job by the entire golf team. Thank you very much.
- 2:22:25Thank you commissioner.
- 2:22:26Thank you.
- 2:22:27Listen, I'd just like to say a couple of things about the trophy.
- 2:22:33Of course I mentioned last year what this trophy means and what the man meant that made all this possible.
- 2:22:40But I'd just like to say a couple of things about our football team.
- 2:22:45In the four years that I've been down in Miami, every year this team has gotten a little bit better.
- 2:22:50The first year we got to the playoffs and got beaten to playoffs.
- 2:22:53The next year we made it to the Super Bowl, but we were frustrated.
- 2:22:56We got beaten to Super Bowl.
- 2:22:58And then last year, 17-0, the Super Bowl, everything else.
- 2:23:02And I didn't think that anything else could ever be any greater than that.
- 2:23:06But this year, even though we lost two ball games, for this team to be able to go back to back,
- 2:23:12and there's only one other team that ever did that, Bart, the old pack.
- 2:23:16And I just feel so proud of this team because I think, again, it's gone one step beyond what it did last year.
- 2:23:23Last year was fantastic, but the accomplishment this year of going back to back against the competition that we've had to go against
- 2:23:30just makes me so proud of our football team, the coaches, the entire organization.
- 2:23:35I'm just a part, I'm proud to be a part of it. Thank you.
- 2:23:39Thank you, Don. Mr. Robbie, how about a few words from you?
- 2:23:41Yes, all you skewers have gone through, and that's a quite a record for me.
- 2:23:45Last year I was asked what we could do for an encore after going 17-0, and I said, well, what's wrong with 34-0?
- 2:23:52This afternoon I'm perfectly satisfied with 32-2.
- 2:23:56But unimaginative people keep asking me that same question, what if you beat Minnesota this afternoon?
- 2:24:01Well, all I can say to them now is, now we'll strive for consistency. We want to make this habit for you.
- 2:24:07There are two million people in me, Paradise area of South Florida, who share in this great triumph with us.
- 2:24:14And 10,000 of them were out here this afternoon.
- 2:24:17One of the Minneapolis people said, you've got the wildest fans I ever saw, and that was before the game started.
- 2:24:22We're mighty happy. If you'll join us tonight over at the Marriott, why, we'll try and get you happy with us
- 2:24:30because this is another great moment for the Miami Dolphins. Thank you very much.
- 2:24:34Thank you very much, Mr. Robbie. Thank you, Dean. Congratulations here.
- 2:24:38Let's see, we have Bob Greasy here, and is Coach Schuyler left already?
- 2:24:42I told Chad to go back there to Bob, congratulations.
- 2:24:46Thank you very much. It's hard to realize that it's over and we've won it all week long.
- 2:24:52It's a preparation type of thing, and you're concerned about going out and doing it, and then you don't know you're going to win.
- 2:24:58A lot of people feel very confident, and we certainly did, but until you go out and play the ballgame,
- 2:25:02it just hasn't hit me yet. It will later, I'm sure.
- 2:25:05All right, John Schuyler, I believe, has a question for you, Bob.
- 2:25:07Bob, I thought you faced a great deal of the time today on offset defense by Minnesota.
- 2:25:12Did you use quite a few audibles? You seemed to attack it perfectly.
- 2:25:16Well, not really, John. We studied pretty well. We kind of knew what they were going to do.
- 2:25:22As far as, they didn't use a lot of odd fronts before, but we knew what we could do and knew how to block them.
- 2:25:27We don't use that many checkoffs during the ballgame.
- 2:25:30We feel like the few times you can check off the better, because any time you do all the lies,
- 2:25:35and all 11 people have to get it, and there's a chance that somebody may not get it because of the crowd noise
- 2:25:41or they may think you said a number that you didn't say.
- 2:25:44So the best way to do it is to prepare so thoroughly that you don't have to use checkoffs.
- 2:25:49All right, we do have, yes, Bart Stark.
- 2:25:51Bob, would the same apply to the pass if you threw the briscoe down the goal line?
- 2:25:54Was it rather than an audible something you just anticipated their coverage to be in?
- 2:25:58Right, Bart, and I'm sure you've done it many times.
- 2:26:00You get in a certain situation on the football field and you have a pretty good idea of what they're going to be in,
- 2:26:05and they were glitzing on that situation, and all the linebackers and the strong safety was accounted for,
- 2:26:10and it was a slam into Marlin and he made a good catch out of it.
- 2:26:14It's just a matter of knowing what they're going to do at a precise time.
- 2:26:18Wade Walker.
- 2:26:20Bob, Larry Zonka has stated that you have a great understanding of the running game,
- 2:26:24and I know he likes it for that being a running back.
- 2:26:26Now, two weeks ago against Oakland you threw very few times, and this afternoon you threw seven times,
- 2:26:30but most of those came early.
- 2:26:32Did you feel that going into today's game that you may have to throw more against Minnesota than you have in the past?
- 2:26:37As we did against Oakland, we were prepared to throw a lot more,
- 2:26:40but I felt the tempo of the game, the way we got out way in front, the running game was going well again,
- 2:26:45and just the things that I thought the way the game should be called, we did it this way.
- 2:26:50We had a lot of pass plays on.
- 2:26:52They got a good rush, and some of our offensive linemen, Wayne Moore in particular, was banged up a little bit,
- 2:26:58and I thought the best way to handle it was to get positive plays rather than try and throw a lot
- 2:27:04and maybe get thrown for losses of the yardage.
- 2:27:08All right, Pete Redflap.
- 2:27:10It seemed in the first half that you were using Warfield sparingly,
- 2:27:15and of course maybe during the week you had to shift the emphasis of your passing game to the other side
- 2:27:20using Briscoe a little bit more, not knowing whether Warfield could really stretch out or not.
- 2:27:24And in the third quarter, that nice split of the zone to Warfield,
- 2:27:27anything take place in the first half? Warfield told you, look, I've tried it, it's okay?
- 2:27:32No, yeah, exactly. I was talking to Paul all the time because early in the game I didn't know
- 2:27:36whether he would be full strength or half strength or how he would be able to run.
- 2:27:41So I didn't know whether to lead him like he usually runs or not,
- 2:27:44but he came back and said that he was running pretty well and just about up the par, and so we got together.
- 2:27:49But I did let him have a few plays in the first quarter to test it out.
- 2:27:54Bart Starr, we have a scramble here first. We'd like you to comment on if you would, Bob,
- 2:27:59since this was kind of rare to see you doing this. What happened in this fixed situation?
- 2:28:06I forgot.
- 2:28:08Now this was supposed to be a pass to Paul on the left, and they probably scouted us and saw that we'd like to go to him down there,
- 2:28:14and they got him covered pretty well.
- 2:28:16I mean, of course, you don't want to give the ball up down there on an interception,
- 2:28:19so I just thought the best thing to do was keep it and run for what I got and come up and line up again and try to score the next time.
- 2:28:25All right. Well, thank you very much, Bob, and congratulations again.
