- 0:41Speaker 1: John Jay, zero inbox day, which sounds like less of
- 0:44Speaker 1: a holiday and more of a nightmare for you. How
- 0:46Speaker 1: many unanswered emails currently in your inbox?
- 0:49Speaker 3: Can you let me know there?
- 0:51Speaker 6: You guys, you want to bet? Is it over 10,000
- 0:53Speaker 6: or under 10,000?
- 0:54Speaker 3: I think it's over 10,000.
- 0:55Speaker 4: I think we're under.
- 0:56Speaker 3: I think we're over. Even though he's tried to clear
- 0:58Speaker 3: them out. I.
- 0:59Speaker 4: I have cleared my successfully, but I'm at 3,500.
- 1:01Speaker 5: I've been in the hundreds of thousands before.
- 1:04Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:06Speaker 6: Do you guys see this Buzzfeed article?
- 1:10Speaker 2: It's hilarious.
- 1:12Speaker 6: It's kind of like people have started realizing, am I
- 1:14Speaker 6: doing this just because this is how everyone's always done it?
- 1:17Speaker 2: What?
- 1:18Speaker 6: I don't want to do it that way. So they
- 1:19Speaker 6: put out these piece of like the things people are
- 1:21Speaker 6: doing that are, they're ditching societal norms. They realized they
- 1:24Speaker 6: never actually agreed with, for instance, Sleeping in separate bedrooms,
- 1:29Speaker 6: even if they're happily married. It's like, why do we
- 1:30Speaker 6: have to sleep in the same bedroom? Same bed.
- 1:33Speaker 4: Why do we have to sleep together?
- 1:34Speaker 3: The sleep divorce. We've talked about that a lot.
- 1:36Speaker 6: And it's gotten so popular that like sleep divorce has
- 1:39Speaker 6: kind of become a thing. And we've heard a lot
- 1:40Speaker 6: of people say they've ditched that societal norm and it's
- 1:43Speaker 6: worked for them. So they also have chimed in with this,
- 1:47Speaker 6: not answering the phone just because it rings. Just because
- 1:51Speaker 6: you call me and I see your call doesn't necessarily mean.
- 1:54Speaker 3: I have to pick it up.
- 1:55Speaker 4: Unless you're in a place where they can see you.
- 1:57Speaker 4: That's the part that's embarrassing.
- 1:59Speaker 6: Then that would maybe just be rude.
- 2:00Speaker 4: If you're out and about.
- 2:02Speaker 6: Leaving a party without doing the 20 minute goodbye. This
- 2:05Speaker 6: is a big John Jay. You haven't ever really conformed
- 2:07Speaker 6: to that societal norm. This is one I cannot do.
- 2:10Speaker 6: I've tried to stick out before and I just feel
- 2:12Speaker 6: rude and I have to say goodbye to everyone.
- 2:14Speaker 2: I actually just went to a wedding where the DJ
- 2:17Speaker 2: announced like, hey, like. The bride and groom are so
- 2:20Speaker 2: happy that you're here. But if they're out dancing on
- 2:22Speaker 2: the dance floor, like, just leave. Please don't come and
- 2:25Speaker 2: say bye.
- 2:25Speaker 3: And take them out of the moment. Yeah.
- 2:28Speaker 1: That's weird.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Just leave. They're super thankful that you're here.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Send them a text tomorrow morning. But do not interrupt
- 2:33Speaker 3: the dance floor. Wow.
- 2:35Speaker 6: That kind of makes sense because they want to keep
- 2:36Speaker 6: the flow and everyone excited.
- 2:38Speaker 5: So you have a list of things that are normal
- 2:40Speaker 5: in society, but we want to stop doing them.
- 2:42Speaker 6: There's societal norms that people have decided to ditch because
- 2:44Speaker 6: they don't agree with them anyway.
- 2:46Speaker 5: So like off the top of my head, there's one
- 2:48Speaker 5: that always bothers me and it is the one where
- 2:50Speaker 5: you have to wait for everyone to be served at
- 2:51Speaker 5: a restaurant before you eat.
- 2:52Speaker 4: Yeah. I just want to get my food and eat.
- 2:55Speaker 6: Manners, right?
- 2:56Speaker 1: I know. Well, I think you can say man is
- 2:58Speaker 1: for all of these things. I feel like if you ask, hey,
- 3:01Speaker 1: can I start? Most people would say yes. But what
- 3:03Speaker 1: about the person who says, no, I'm not comfortable with that.
- 3:05Speaker 1: You need to wait for it.
- 3:06Speaker 4: Well, that's usually my wife.
- 3:07Speaker 5: Or if I start, she'll be like, you can't start
- 3:09Speaker 5: until you're ready.
- 3:10Speaker 4: My wife says, and I don't know if this is true.
- 3:12Speaker 4: You wait till everybody gets served for you. But if
- 3:14Speaker 4: you're at a buffet.
- 3:15Speaker 5: As soon as you come back from your food, you
- 3:17Speaker 5: can go, hey, you don't have to wait for everyone
- 3:18Speaker 5: to sit down.
- 3:18Speaker 2: That makes sense.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Interesting.
- 3:19Speaker 2: I feel like if it's you and one other person,
- 3:21Speaker 2: you should probably wait until they get their food. But
- 3:23Speaker 2: if you're at like a big 15-person dinner, you might be.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Able to get away with it.
- 3:26Speaker 1: What about this one? When somebody asks you a question,
- 3:28Speaker 1: they just want you to say, yeah, that's great. When
- 3:30Speaker 1: they're like, hey, how are you? I just want to say, well,
- 3:33Speaker 1: my knee really hurts and I'm dead inside.
- 3:35Speaker 3: How are you? Actually answering.
- 3:37Speaker 6: The societal norm is saying, yeah, good, but you actually
- 3:40Speaker 6: want to tell them.
- 3:40Speaker 3: They want you to hear.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Good, how are you?
- 3:42Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what they want.
- 3:43Speaker 4: You want to tell them the truth. Yeah, I want
- 3:45Speaker 4: to tell them the truth.
- 3:46Speaker 6: So another one on the list is not forcing kids
- 3:49Speaker 6: to hug relatives. This is like, I'm like such a hugger,
- 3:53Speaker 6: but I also have seen this all over, like, my
- 3:56Speaker 6: Instagram algorithms and stuff like that. If like your kids
- 3:58Speaker 6: don't want to hug someone, don't make them hug someone.
- 4:00Speaker 6: And that does totally make sense to me. So the
- 4:04Speaker 6: next societal norm that people are saying we're done with,
- 4:06Speaker 6: we didn't even agree with it in the first place
- 4:08Speaker 6: was not making small talk with strangers. If I don't
- 4:10Speaker 6: want to talk to you, I'm just not going to
- 4:12Speaker 6: talk to you. If it's awkward in the elevator.
- 4:13Speaker 4: Oh, well, I'm a big fan of that one.
- 4:17Speaker 3: How are you going to make friends if you don't
- 4:19Speaker 3: talk to strangers?
- 4:20Speaker 6: Well, sometimes those strangers, maybe those strangers don't even want
- 4:22Speaker 6: you to talk to them.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Right.
- 4:24Speaker 6: Either way. The next one is saying no without giving
- 4:29Speaker 6: a big explanation. It's like something that's really hard for people.
- 4:33Speaker 6: And that's also something really hard for people to accept
- 4:36Speaker 6: because sometimes they're like, they just said no.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:38Speaker 3: They didn't even explain why.
- 4:39Speaker 4: I struggle with that.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Like, I think I deserve an explanation.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:42Speaker 4: So you're saying that, explain that one to me.
- 4:46Speaker 6: So- There is like a phrase now that I think
- 4:49Speaker 6: is trying to help people who are trying to do this.
- 4:51Speaker 4: That it's okay to say no.
- 4:52Speaker 6: No is a complete sentence.
- 4:54Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, okay.
- 4:55Speaker 6: So you can say no without going, no, because I
- 4:58Speaker 6: have to go here, here, and here. You could just say, no,
- 5:00Speaker 6: I can't do that.
- 5:01Speaker 3: That's true.
- 5:01Speaker 6: And that's a hard one for people to do.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Because like, what if you don't have anything to do
- 5:05Speaker 2: and you just want to chill?
- 5:07Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Because I get in that and then I like start
- 5:08Speaker 2: coming up with a story that I'm going to tell them.
- 5:10Speaker 2: And then at that point, now I'm just lying to you.
- 5:12Speaker 3: You might as well just go.
- 5:15Speaker 4: Exactly. Right.
- 5:16Speaker 6: So the next one is not keeping relationships with family
- 5:20Speaker 6: members just because they're family. Apparently that is a societal
- 5:23Speaker 6: norm that people say, I didn't agree with in the
- 5:25Speaker 6: first place. So if I don't want to be around you,
- 5:28Speaker 6: I don't care if you're family.
- 5:29Speaker 5: Heck yeah.
- 5:29Speaker 2: I am with that one and I stand 10 toes
- 5:31Speaker 2: down on that.
- 5:32Speaker 5: I like to not have to hold the door for
- 5:34Speaker 5: someone when they're that... too uncomfortable distance far away.
- 5:37Speaker 3: And then you have to hit the little trot.
- 5:39Speaker 1: No problem.
- 5:40Speaker 5: I got to hold it in a way. Now I
- 5:41Speaker 5: look at him like, hey, hurry up a little bit
- 5:43Speaker 5: because I'm closer right now.
- 5:44Speaker 3: What do you say? Hey, no problem at all. What
- 5:46Speaker 3: about this? What about when somebody's super late and you're like, oh,
- 5:48Speaker 3: no worries. There are worries. You're 40 minutes late.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Worries.
- 5:51Speaker 4: Oh, believe me. I don't say no worries.
- 5:53Speaker 3: I know you don't.
- 5:54Speaker 4: I know you don't.
- 5:55Speaker 6: John Jay makes it known that there are definitely worries.
- 6:01Speaker 6: This one is going to dinner or movies alone. It's
- 6:03Speaker 6: a societal norm to always be with someone. But if
- 6:06Speaker 6: I want to do things alone, I am doing them alone.
- 6:09Speaker 6: says these people on this BuzzFeed article. The societal norms
- 6:13Speaker 6: of people say, I know this is what people have
- 6:15Speaker 6: always done in the past, but I'm not doing it
- 6:17Speaker 6: because I didn't agree with it in the first place.
- 6:19Speaker 4: I love that.
- 6:19Speaker 2: I love a good solo happy hour.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I don't like that my wife always wants to stop
- 6:24Speaker 1: and get a bottle of wine to bring to somebody's
- 6:26Speaker 1: house party. Like, if you invited us over, you'd probably
- 6:29Speaker 1: have a bottle of wine.
- 6:30Speaker 4: You'd probably don't need ours.
- 6:32Speaker 6: That's just being nice. You don't want to show up empty-handed.
- 6:37Speaker 4: Yeah, you're right, though.
- 6:38Speaker 3: I am the gift to your party.
- 6:42Speaker 4: That was great, Kyle.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Thanks.
- 6:44Speaker 4: That was fun. What would we do without BuzzFeed? Nothing.
