- 0:13Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Driven Athlete Podcast.
- 0:15Speaker 1: We've got a really cool guest with us, jackson Worley, the local legend football player.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Thanks for coming in, man.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Thanks for having me.
- 0:23Speaker 1: For sure, I'm looking forward to it.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Cool, I know that.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Um, you know you're busy, dude.
- 0:31Speaker 1: You're home for summer for a little bit.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Yes, sir, right, um, tell us where you're at school now what you're, what you're playing for sure.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for having me on for sure.
- 0:36Speaker 2: And uh, troll university is where I'm at right now playing football.
- 0:39Speaker 2: So smaller d1 school in alabama right now.
- 0:43Speaker 2: So I was up there.
- 0:44Speaker 2: My first semester Was done in the fall and then just got done in the spring ball.
- 0:49Speaker 2: So home for a little bit now.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Cool, so you just finished your freshman year.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 0:54Speaker 1: At a major D1 program, which is really cool, right?
- 0:57Speaker 1: Fun experience so far.
- 1:00Speaker 2: It's been a really interesting experience, for sure, yeah, yeah, a lot of ups and downs, but it's been a really interesting experience, for sure.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, a lot of ups and downs, but it's been a good learning process.
- 1:08Speaker 2: For sure, yeah, cause you learn a lot about yourself, especially going away, cause mom and dad are not there.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Yeah, totally your own.
- 1:12Speaker 2: It's a big change, totally.
- 1:14Speaker 1: So, and you're from uh, so we originally met because, um, well, I coached with you, right.
- 1:19Speaker 1: I coached you at King's Academy in Wellington, right, and you played football there, um, and then you got a lot bigger, getting healthy, getting some D1 looks, and then was able to sign with Troy, which is awesome, uh, and I share your story with people I don't I don't mention your name, of course keep things confidential, of, just like there is hope.
- 1:40Speaker 1: If there's a major issue going on, right, which you've elected to share with everybody, right, yes, sir, we could talk about it to help encourage other people.
- 1:48Speaker 1: But anyway, just an encouraging statement of like, even though these challenging things are going on, that doesn't mean that you're you're, you're forever doomed.
- 1:55Speaker 1: You know what I mean.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Like, totally, we can improve stuff and like work on stuff and like get things better and gradually progress.
- 2:00Speaker 1: You know what I mean absolutely, which, for you, has been really cool, you know, um to now d1 football player man, it's awesome, tight end, right.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Um.
- 2:08Speaker 1: So first year is done.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Compared to high school, how has the uh scheduling been?
- 2:15Speaker 2: and like practices and meetings and school and all this stuff so I'd say the biggest difference probably is like high school, the summertime is like the big like be up at this time, go to workouts early in the morning, you're done at 10 o'clock.
- 2:28Speaker 2: You know, eight to 10 o'clock was kind of the time we did in the summer, and then once you get to the fall, you know you're, you know, doing a weight training class sometime in the afternoon and then practice.
- 2:37Speaker 2: College was like you're up six o'clock, we're at the field through through summer, we're done at a certain time.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Go back in the afternoon, we have more meetings and then the fall time.
- 2:48Speaker 2: We were up at five o'clock and then we had the workouts and then we had some meetings and then practice.
- 2:55Speaker 2: So it's a lot more busy.
- 2:57Speaker 1: I would say that it's more like more structured schedule, totally more military style I would say that yeah, that's what I've heard, yeah um, and you know my lower level, I, because I played due to football, my experience was somewhat similar, probably not not as intense, you know, um, but uh, so you guys had workouts first thing in the morning for the fall semester, right, and summer you would work out first thing in the morning and then you would have meetings after that, right, and then you would have classes in the fall and then after that in the afternoon you have practice.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Yes, sir, that's exactly right.
- 3:28Speaker 1: So then what time would you get?
- 3:29Speaker 2: done with practice.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Yeah, probably around.
- 3:32Speaker 2: I would say six, six o'clock, 5, 30 is okay.
- 3:36Speaker 2: So, and then after that you know it's homework and then some extra work.
- 3:40Speaker 2: If you want to do that, yeah, and then repeat eat some food, eat.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Crush food for sure yeah, you got to put the weight on?
- 3:47Speaker 1: Yeah, totally man, it makes sense.
- 3:51Speaker 1: I believe it Summertime.
- 3:53Speaker 1: You're going to go back to Troy for summer workouts in a month, correct?
- 3:58Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Right now it's May you have a month we're doing rehab stuff and getting your body right, doing your own workouts, going back to king's academy today to meet, see some people and work out.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Yes, sir, so they're gonna go back for workouts in june, um, and the structure is the same as last summer, where it's like 6 am, wake up, work out first and then go back and have lunch, come back and have football meetings or conditioning and stuff.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Well, we haven't gotten the schedule yet, but that's what we did last year.
- 4:27Speaker 2: I would assume it's probably really similar, just because I mean you get different coaches coming in.
- 4:33Speaker 2: It's probably going to be around the same schedule and just different types of workouts, the way we do stuff.
- 4:37Speaker 2: But Coach Parker, our head coach, and he came from the offense coordinator at Notre Dame, coach, and he came from the offense coordinator at Notre Dame.
- 4:46Speaker 2: He he's come in and he's carried the culture over.
- 4:48Speaker 2: You know, we've, at Troy, won back-to-back Sunbelt championships, so nice.
- 4:50Speaker 2: He's come in and I think we're gonna, probably I think we're gonna do it again.
- 4:53Speaker 2: He's set a great culture continuing that.
- 4:55Speaker 2: So I think it'll probably be really similar to what we did last year.
- 4:59Speaker 2: What kind of culture would you describe it to be like?
- 5:02Speaker 2: I'd say tough for sure.
- 5:04Speaker 2: I think it's a tough culture, um, and everyone cares for each other, respects each other and we're hard working.
- 5:10Speaker 2: I would definitely say that, just from the workouts and just, you know, even just doing spring ball, I think we've come a long way since just beginning of january.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Cool, that's awesome so sunbelt champs is the goal.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Fall 2024, absolutely.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Who's going to be your biggest challenge?
- 5:28Speaker 2: I don't pick one team, I think you know it's one week at a time and we just take it like that.
- 5:32Speaker 2: That's great.
- 5:34Speaker 1: That's awesome, man.
- 5:34Speaker 1: If somebody were to challenge the Sunbelt and be like who would be the runner up, do you think?
- 5:43Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 5:43Speaker 2: I don't want to say teams, but I think everyone is in that conference.
- 5:48Speaker 2: It's a good conference, competitive.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Everyone brings it every single week.
- 5:51Speaker 2: There's no weeks off.
- 5:53Speaker 2: You have to be ready every single week.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Good, I like your answer.
- 5:56Speaker 1: It doesn't matter, we're going to every week, week to week Exactly.
- 5:59Speaker 2: That's awesome man, that's cool, um culture, wise, practice structure, practice intensity compared to high school, what's it like?
- 6:10Speaker 2: Yeah, that's, let's see.
- 6:10Speaker 2: So I would say it's probably like the durations a little bit.
- 6:12Speaker 2: It's not as long, I don't think just because high school a lot of guys.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Well, at least at kings we'd have guys playing on both sides of the ball, so everyone is kind of just working for those two hours and, like you get some breaks here and there.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Some people are subbing in and out.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Like college I'm a tight end, I'm just with the offense the whole time.
- 6:33Speaker 2: So you're super focused and specialized, locked in there.
- 6:36Speaker 2: There's more indie time.
- 6:37Speaker 2: There's more time for just to focus on that, because offense and defense are split.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Yeah, so it keeps things more efficient time-wise.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Right Totally does offense defense are split.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Yeah, so so it keeps things more efficient, time-wise, right?
- 6:47Speaker 1: Mm-hmm, totally does so.
- 6:47Speaker 1: So it's a lot more focused and specialized, streamlined for your particular specific position.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Yes, sir, versus like well, now it's time to shift gears and practice defense right, or like go over our defensive stuff right, there's more time to just lock in on just offense, so it doesn't need to be as long.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Yeah, that's good that's good.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Um, what about conditioning?
- 7:04Speaker 1: Do you guys do a lot of conditioning at practice, or was like earlier in the day in your workouts?
- 7:08Speaker 2: um, I'd say the conditioning was more than like the before spring ball started, the only time we really did.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Uh, the conditioning work is like you know, you mess up or something like get on the line like a punishment yeah, time to run, time to pick up, just pick up, exactly.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Because that's always a question.
- 7:25Speaker 1: It's like oh man, major League, it's got to be really intense and workouts and stuff.
- 7:29Speaker 1: So it definitely sounds very structured.
- 7:31Speaker 1: They set you guys up for success.
- 7:33Speaker 1: For sure.
- 7:33Speaker 1: They don't want to overwork you guys, I would assume, right.
- 7:36Speaker 2: I mean, the practice is intense, though, Don't get me wrong, I've only been able to do a few just due to injuries in the fall time.
- 7:48Speaker 2: But, um, from what?
- 7:48Speaker 2: I saw in the spring and what I've done in the fall, it's, it's very intense, so there's really no need to.
- 7:50Speaker 2: You know, do some half gassers or you know 60 hour sprints or anything like that at the end of practice, because you're just, you're getting your conditioning while you're doing the practice, gotcha that's a good way to put it.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Yeah, um, what about classes?
- 8:01Speaker 2: like compared to high school.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, not as long.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Yeah, like not as many classes, I should say, because high school, you know, you go all day from, like you know, sometimes eight o'clock to three in the afternoon and then college.
- 8:15Speaker 2: You just got my spring semester.
- 8:17Speaker 2: I had three classes Monday, wednesday, friday and then Tuesday, thursday.
- 8:22Speaker 2: I had no classes, nice you can focus on football.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Yeah, and your workouts and stuff.
- 8:27Speaker 1: What about nutrition?
- 8:29Speaker 1: About eating?
- 8:29Speaker 1: Do the coaches really harp on you guys for making sure you eat enough?
- 8:34Speaker 1: Eat the right stuff?
- 8:35Speaker 2: Yeah, they do.
- 8:36Speaker 2: They make some weight gain shakes.
- 8:37Speaker 2: They did that last year too.
- 8:38Speaker 2: The strength staff we have now with Coach Bauer he's done a good job giving us the stuff that we need to eat and stuff to make sure that we're ready to be on the field.
- 8:51Speaker 2: So but yeah, coach has always been texting like make sure you eat something you know some extra calories in.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Yeah, Good, that's good, cause you'll put you so much energy for everything you guys do.
- 8:59Speaker 1: You know you have to replenish that and you'll areall are growing so much still too.
- 9:03Speaker 1: You know, putting on weight, weightlifting, practice, all that stuff.
- 9:06Speaker 1: You know, was it like that for you at Quincy Good question, so kind of.
- 9:12Speaker 1: It was definitely a lot more from what you're describing.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Fall camp was definitely intense, you know, training camp, training camp is intense.
- 9:20Speaker 1: You're living, eating, breathing, sleeping, football from 6.00 AM till 6.00 PM, you know, and you're so tired you just like go to bed at seven.
- 9:29Speaker 1: You know what I mean.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Um, but there, with it being a lower level, d two program, um, people, the, the playmakers that took it intense, you know.
- 9:43Speaker 1: That took it seriously.
- 9:44Speaker 1: They would obviously play more and excel more, you know.
- 9:46Speaker 1: So it's just on you.
- 9:48Speaker 1: You know, if you want to be a playmaker and be a starter and like do well, then it's.
- 9:53Speaker 1: It's ultimately on you to put the work and the effort in.
- 9:57Speaker 1: You know what I mean Totally.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Um, I would imagine similar for you guys, just more coaching staff and checking in and checking up on on kids yeah, pretty much.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Yeah, gotcha, but anyway, yeah, that's that, that's.
- 10:10Speaker 1: And there were definitely a lot, the a lot of athletes and players on our team that, um, they didn't take it seriously, you know, and then they would complain that they weren't playing yeah.
- 10:23Speaker 1: I'm like what do you expect?
- 10:24Speaker 2: You definitely got to put the work in you got to put some work in.
- 10:31Speaker 1: It's like you're not performing what makes you think that you're all of a sudden going to be super respected and then just put it in the game or in practice.
- 10:35Speaker 1: They'd be bummed and upset that they're not getting reps in practice with the ones or the second string and they're just getting skipped over.
- 10:44Speaker 1: And I'm like what do you expect?
- 10:45Speaker 1: You know, totally.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Uh, you gotta.
- 10:47Speaker 1: You gotta show the coaches what you could do.
- 10:49Speaker 1: You gotta show up and have a good attitude and put some good effort in.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Do the workouts, get bigger and stronger?
- 10:55Speaker 1: And if you come back overweight, you know, or like sloppy and then not in the best physical condition, is that going to impress the coaches to be like you know what?
- 11:04Speaker 1: I still believe in you.
- 11:05Speaker 2: It's like well, so far what I've seen, I'm not really super confident that you can like pull your weight in the game, you know, and practice it's consistency yeah, totally yeah, just being consistent, just doing the work, extra work as well, on your own, because if you do, if you just do what's required, then it's like you know you're not going to get too far, just meeting minimum standards.
- 11:25Speaker 1: That's no, totally man, and I think that applies with almost everything.
- 11:31Speaker 1: You know what?
- 11:35Speaker 1: So school-wise, what's?
- 11:35Speaker 2: your what subjects seem to interest you the most.
- 11:36Speaker 2: I'd say good question.
- 11:38Speaker 2: I'd probably say it's not a class that I've done like with the university, I guess but it's more so with the strength staff.
- 11:46Speaker 2: We have these things called strength labs and it's where our head strength coach and our assistant strength coach will take, you know, the other assistant strength coaches, and then we'll go and sit down, they invite players in, yeah, and they'll go over different types of training methods that they've used in the past.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Just educate us, us on that, and I found that to be the most interesting one.
- 12:07Speaker 1: So exercise, science, strength conditioning.
- 12:10Speaker 2: I guess you could say that that realm.
- 12:12Speaker 2: I haven't taken any actual class like that.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Well, not yet.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Not yet.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Just finish your freshman year, you'll get there Exactly, but the ones that we've done on the side that's been the thing that's interested me the most.
- 12:32Speaker 1: That's cool, um, and that's always, I feel like, for um, young students, student athletes, that are finding their direction of like what academic direction they want to go.
- 12:35Speaker 1: You know, the little experiences like that are huge.
- 12:36Speaker 1: That's what shapes like oh, that's cool, that's interesting.
- 12:39Speaker 1: You know, I didn't even know that was a thing.
- 12:41Speaker 1: And then they like dive more into that little subject and they go a little bit further and then they continue that path and they're just like it's because they're interested in it and they're good at it, or they like it naturally.
- 12:49Speaker 1: That's anyway those little like random internship observation opportunities or just extra things like that's interesting, right, right, I would definitely recommend to like continue pursuing that path, you know for sure, yeah, I'll probably.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Maybe, as May this next year, I might take some more classes in that area, just because just going in those sitting down in those little meetings is interesting me at times.
- 13:10Speaker 2: So there you go.
- 13:11Speaker 1: That's, that's the answer.
- 13:12Speaker 1: You know that's it.
- 13:13Speaker 1: That's um.
- 13:14Speaker 1: We will spike the interest in the direction.
- 13:16Speaker 1: You know that's cool.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Um, so describe like life during season in the fall.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Um were saying you have workouts before school or early in the morning, right, so you're waking up at what time?
- 13:31Speaker 1: You said five.
- 13:32Speaker 2: That was last year.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Yeah, we had these things called the warrior group and that was with all the freshmen, younger players would go in, that Then the older guys would come in Offense.
- 13:42Speaker 2: I think was I think, well, we'd wake up at 5, and then our workout would start at 5.50.
- 13:47Speaker 2: And then the older group would come in at 6.50 and then 7.50.
- 13:51Speaker 2: So we were like, you know, first year you got to put in the hours, you got to do what you got to do.
- 13:58Speaker 1: So the upperclassmen get the privileges of coming in later to sleep in more.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Yep, yes, sir, that's understandable privileges of coming in later to sleep in more?
- 14:03Speaker 1: Yep, yes, sir.
- 14:03Speaker 2: It's understandable.
- 14:04Speaker 2: They earned it.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Yeah, totally.
- 14:05Speaker 2: And then we'd have class, like I said, and then the meetings and then practice, gotcha, okay.
- 14:10Speaker 1: And then you'd be done.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Then you would study, review some notes and stuff, crush food and then wake up and do it again For sure.
- 14:17Speaker 1: What about weekends?
- 14:18Speaker 1: Because games on Saturdays right?
- 14:20Speaker 1: So do you have walkthroughs in on Fridays?
- 14:21Speaker 1: I would assume yes, sir.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Describe walkthrough day.
- 14:27Speaker 2: It's, I mean, definitely not as intense.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Obviously we just walk out with helmets and then the cleats.
- 14:30Speaker 2: We call them run throughs, that's what we called them last year.
- 14:32Speaker 2: I like that better than walk through.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Yeah, because walk through just like, hey, we're just here to do it, but then the run through we just kind of the stretch, we'd go through the routine and then we'd split offense defense, run through some plays there, basically just make sure everything's ready to go for the game on Saturday.
- 14:54Speaker 2: That's what those were like.
- 14:55Speaker 2: They lasted maybe about an hour hour, 10 minutes, something like that Gotcha.
- 15:00Speaker 2: And then Saturday I didn't get to experience this at all because you know the injuries, but they would, everyone would go on Friday night to the hotel and then, you know, wake up Saturday game day, arrive on the bus and then, you know, go play.
- 15:15Speaker 2: And then Sundays we'd have like just a wellness check or something like that, and then some film At the training room, mm-hmm, and then some film afterwards, gotcha.
- 15:23Speaker 2: So, and then some film At the training room.
- 15:24Speaker 1: Mm-hmm, and then some film afterwards, gotcha, and then after that you have the rest of the day to chill, recover.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Yes, sir, eat some more food, eat, eat, and then start over again on.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Monday Yep, that's the theme.
- 15:33Speaker 2: College is eat.
- 15:35Speaker 2: Yeah, totally Make sure.
- 15:36Speaker 2: And then the season for you guys.
- 15:46Speaker 2: You have how many regular season games did you guys have last last season?
- 15:48Speaker 2: Usually 12.
- 15:49Speaker 2: Well, we we finished 11 and 3, so we had one bowl game and then the conference championship.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Okay, so regular season 12, yeah, and then two playoff or like two like postseason stuff.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Right, who'd y'all play in the bowl game?
- 15:57Speaker 2: we played uh, duke, that's right.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Birmingham bowl yeah, that was good, man, y'all played good.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Yeah, we did.
- 16:03Speaker 2: You know bowl week was interesting, it was.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Um, I mean, there Y'all played good, yeah, we did.
- 16:05Speaker 2: You know bowl week was interesting, it was.
- 16:06Speaker 2: I mean, there's definitely some perks.
- 16:08Speaker 2: You get to it, you know you get to.
- 16:10Speaker 2: You know it's not as it's not like a game week per se just because there's, you know you're in a different place, that you know you go out to special spots to eat and stuff like that.
- 16:20Speaker 2: So it's definitely fun though.
- 16:27Speaker 1: It's that.
- 16:27Speaker 1: So it's definitely fun, though it's a cool experience, mm-hmm, and all you guys hanging out like at the hotel and oh yeah, it was awesome, that's really cool.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Well, okay, so describe.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Then you were a high, you know, highly recruited, coming out of high school tight end.
- 16:33Speaker 1: For now to Troy.
- 16:36Speaker 1: I remember meeting the coat, the tight end coach, at Troy.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Yes, sir, this was two years ago.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Right, this is 20, would like dad not.
- 16:42Speaker 1: It was 2022 season.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Um, the uh, we're going to fall camp.
- 16:48Speaker 1: Right, you went for summer workouts and then fall camp started, right, and then what you tore?
- 16:53Speaker 1: Your acl.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Is that correct?
- 16:54Speaker 2: yeah, so I think it was like five days or maybe, maybe a week and a half.
- 16:58Speaker 2: I think it was a couple weeks into the camp and then that happened.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Yeah, okay gotcha um and you were what happened.
- 17:04Speaker 2: You were cutting during a route running around yeah, just cut wrong, you know, just like something crazy, just a freak accident, yeah, but I've definitely the recovery process.
- 17:13Speaker 2: You know I've learned a lot.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Definitely, like you can get better at little stuff, you know, you don't, you don't have to just sit around and do nothing.
- 17:32Speaker 1: You can, you know, throw a tennis, know stretch a little bit.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Once you're cleared to do that, mobilize.
- 17:34Speaker 1: So yeah, so the surgery was August of last year, is that right?
- 17:35Speaker 1: Right, so we're coming up on like 10 months.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Um, how's it going to be feeling now?
- 17:38Speaker 2: A lot better.
- 17:38Speaker 2: I mean it's.
- 17:39Speaker 2: It's cool to see the progress and how it works.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Like a month ago or two months ago definitely wouldn't be doing the stuff I'm able to do now.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:47Speaker 1: So then you'll come in next this coming season as a medical redshirt freshman and then full go Right.
- 17:54Speaker 1: As long as you're pain free and you're doing your thing, You're going to participate.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Which is what?
- 17:58Speaker 1: we're here now for, exactly, we'll work on some stuff to get you right and then set you up for treatment when you go back to school with your trainer and the other physical therapists that are on in the area.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Right, yes, sir, and they get you 100 um.
- 18:10Speaker 1: So rehab wise, right um, through the fall semester and then spring semester.
- 18:18Speaker 1: When would you go get treatment?
- 18:21Speaker 2: like we said, when I get treatment, when, yeah, um well, fall, it was a little different fall because the injury had just happened.
- 18:28Speaker 2: So I would say just sometime in the morning, around maybe eight to nine, thirty ish, okay, somewhere around there.
- 18:37Speaker 2: And then, depending, I have some physical therapy in the afternoon on certain days, I think twice a week, I think it was okay.
- 18:44Speaker 2: So I think it was like tuesday th go up in there, do that for maybe an hour and a half, you know, from like one to two maybe something like that.
- 18:53Speaker 1: So you were getting.
- 18:53Speaker 1: I mean, every day you're going to the trainer pretty much, oh yeah, and then twice a week also physical therapy, Right, so you're going sometimes twice a day, but also every day.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Right, that's how it started out.
- 19:03Speaker 2: And then it just kind of slowly backs down.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Then it's once a week at physical therapy and then it's like just in the training room, and then now it's just, you know, start running again.
- 19:13Speaker 1: Start running routes, that type of thing, nice.
- 19:14Speaker 1: So now we're at the point you're running some agility stuff, some impact things like plyometrics, right Mm-hmm, and then progressing from there.
- 19:21Speaker 1: Absolutely, that's good.
- 19:22Speaker 1: So let's talk about when I first met you, which was you were a junior or actually you were finishing your sophomore year in high school, right, yeah, springtime, going spring ball, and that was the first year that was, or the first moment, I was coaching with kings, um.
- 19:38Speaker 1: And that's when I met you on the sideline because you were hobbling around, right, right, um, and I appreciate you sharing your story, right, um.
- 19:46Speaker 1: So, if you can, I, you want your story, right, um.
- 19:47Speaker 1: So, if you can, I, you want me to explain, yeah, go ahead, okay.
- 19:51Speaker 1: So what I remember and you tell me this is accurate what I remember you saying you just had had, um, that this was in like April, so December of that previous year.
- 20:00Speaker 1: You were having a lot of back pain, right, yeah, and they discovered a unstable spondylolisthesis, which is, for the folks that you guys listening it's when one vertebrae, usually the lowest one, l5, sometimes L4, depending on the situation migrates more forward or anteriorly and it can be unstable and there's a risk for a lot of the neural structures to get involved with, like the spinal cord and other nerve roots and of course, all the soft tissue that connects there and the muscle tissue and all that stuff can get really painful and it's like it's not going away.
- 20:32Speaker 1: So for a young athlete where they're very mobile or maybe hypermobile in some areas, there's a high risk for spinal anesthesia to just start developing and then it can worsen and at the very worst end it can have fracture, which is at the pars intraarticularis, which is a landmark within the vertebrae, and then the spinal cord can be at risk, right.
- 20:53Speaker 1: So from my understanding, you had an unstable spinal lobstesis at 05, and they fused L45 and S1.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, and then after that that was in December of 2020.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, and then after that that was in December of 2020.
- 21:07Speaker 1: 2020.
- 21:08Speaker 1: Yeah, and then come April, when I met you, in the meantime you had knee pain and you had had a meniscus not a meniscectomy meniscus surgery.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Yeah, they cleaned out my left knee, that's what it was.
- 21:20Speaker 2: There was some stuff floating around, so they cleaned it out.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Okay, so you had a major fusion, multi-level back fusion in december and then a left knee scope a couple months later, right.
- 21:30Speaker 1: So when I met you and I was like here's this tall dude, you know like I heard he's like a really great athlete and he's just like kind of like hobbling around the sideline, you know, and I'm like so I was talking to you, right, uh, and you explain all that stuff was like what you know, right.
- 21:44Speaker 1: I was like what are you getting treatment?
- 21:45Speaker 1: He's like still hurts.
- 21:46Speaker 1: I can't really do this.
- 21:47Speaker 1: So I still having some nerve referred pain which is a very common thing after a major back surgery, to have referred residual nerve pain issues, pain irritation, I mean your left knee was bothering you.
- 21:58Speaker 1: It was just week or two, right, which is normal after surgery.
- 22:00Speaker 1: So your left knee was bum and your back was still giving you pain and nerve pain, right, and you're like I want to play football and I'm like this is gonna be.
- 22:07Speaker 1: This is tough, you know.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Hey, I'll do everything I can to help, of course, because we live vicariously through our patients, because we played sports in the past and we want to see people fulfill and get back to crushing sports, of course, and playing and not be hobbled by injuries.
- 22:20Speaker 1: So I spoke to your mom, explain the issue again, more details about it, and then we started working together that summer, right, and you were like coach, coach volstead, I want to play, man, I want to play this fall.
- 22:32Speaker 1: And I'm like, oh, you're a lot of pain, you know, like let's wean into this and see how it goes.
- 22:37Speaker 1: I'm not going to say no, of course I.
- 22:39Speaker 1: We want you to play, that's the goal.
- 22:41Speaker 1: I just don't want to set unrealistic expectations, because their knee was also giving you trouble and your other knee was to give you some trouble, right?
- 22:48Speaker 1: Yeah, if I remember correctly, and they're debating a surgery on that knee and I was like, dude, wait just just like it was just wait.
- 22:53Speaker 1: I remember that there's some compensation things going on.
- 22:55Speaker 1: You know your your right knee could be compensating because your left knee weakness and your back pain.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Let's just work on some stuff, see where it goes right.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Let's not jump on the table yet for a new surgery again.
- 23:05Speaker 1: But anyway, dude, like you were doing really well, starting those improvements pretty quickly, and if I remember correctly, you played in a second game of the season.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Yeah, you dressed out in the first game.
- 23:17Speaker 2: I played special teams.
- 23:18Speaker 2: Actually, that first game, oh, you did play.
- 23:19Speaker 2: I remember that, dude, that's even better.
- 23:22Speaker 1: So you played Right and you did well.
- 23:24Speaker 1: I think you were the leading receiver that season, Something like that.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember specifically your first game that you played offense more purposefully was the second game of the season and we were away, I think, at.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Somerset.
- 23:36Speaker 1: Somerset, yeah, and you had a kick return for 50 yards or something, trucked some guy.
- 23:42Speaker 1: At the end you had a FOMO recovery and a touchdown and a couple receptions.
- 23:46Speaker 1: You had a FOMO recovery and a touchdown and a couple of receptions, right, and I was like dude, we're back.
- 23:49Speaker 1: You know this is awesome.
- 23:50Speaker 1: I remember looking at your parents on the sideline and just being like high five, you know it was awesome.
- 23:55Speaker 1: Um, but anyway, so then you did well that season, right, you met you.
- 23:58Speaker 1: You had some ups and downs, of course, things like come and go, you know, pain, whatever.
- 24:12Speaker 2: What do you remember about that season?
- 24:14Speaker 2: What do you say?
- 24:14Speaker 2: What do you remember about that season, my junior season?
- 24:15Speaker 2: Yeah, like you said, it was some ups and downs for sure, and you know I gotta give it to you for sure, just because I mean you helped me out so much during that season.
- 24:19Speaker 1: I definitely I say this I mean, I don't know if I would have been able to play if I didn't come here, so and y'all helped me out a ton, so thank you for that well, I appreciate that but we're just glad to help yeah, because we, like I said, we live vicariously through our patients and we, like man there's, there's no reason why, like a otherwise healthy young athlete, can fix to work on some stuff, to get back you know what I mean to playing some at least you know what I mean.
- 24:43Speaker 1: There's usually a solution.
- 24:44Speaker 1: Things don't hurt for no reason, like, like, we got to figure this out, you know Right, but anyway, but yeah, that season it started out, you know, kind of slow.
- 24:53Speaker 2: I think we had talked about, you know, coming back maybe week eight or something like that.
- 24:58Speaker 2: Week seven like halfway through the season, yeah, you know, maybe we'll be full speed by then.
- 25:02Speaker 2: And then, you know, know, like you said, the week two, week one, we're back at it.
- 25:10Speaker 2: So and you know I have to give praise.
- 25:11Speaker 2: You know Jesus as well, just, you know, I think, during that time, like, like you said, the ups and downs and just putting my faith in him, and you know, my dad always says, work like it depends on you and pray like it depends on God.
- 25:22Speaker 2: So, um, I think that was definitely something that helped me out that season.
- 25:27Speaker 2: That's awesome, that's cool um the uh you.
- 25:31Speaker 1: I remember you the very last game of the season we, it was a, we lost.
- 25:35Speaker 1: It was a playoff game, if I remember.
- 25:37Speaker 1: It was like to go into the playoffs and we didn't yeah, we missed the playoff, benjamin I think it was.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Oh, they made the second last game of the season, but you were, you had some back, you were doing well, you're crushing it.
- 25:46Speaker 1: And then season, but you were, you had some back, you were doing well, like you're crushing it.
- 25:48Speaker 1: And then we noticed that you were limping but you kept playing.
- 25:51Speaker 1: You didn't say anything, um, and you had like a reception at the end of the game and like you were like off.
- 25:56Speaker 1: You were like done, you know, you're back, but I remember being like man, this guy's a warrior, you know, but anyway, so you played, the whole season was awesome, right?
- 26:11Speaker 1: So then I'm like, all right, this spring, you know, let's just work on.
- 26:12Speaker 1: This is heal, you know, let's let's recover, stabilize everything, the heck out of everything, work on all these mechanical compensations and work out, get strong, right and build up, because you have one more season, right, senior year, and this is where, like, you came off a really good season.
- 26:24Speaker 1: You're junior.
- 26:24Speaker 1: If you have aspirations, which you told me, to play college football, I'm like, dude, we need to, we need to focus, you know, and, like you know, be mindful to not like set the stage for things to get worse, you know, I mean or just relapse, of course.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Um and then and you did right, you're really good.
- 26:41Speaker 1: And then the next season was senior year.
- 26:42Speaker 1: Did really well again.
- 26:44Speaker 1: Battled some ankle stuff, some back stuff occasionally, but did well enough and opened some eyes right to get some, some talks with some schools right for sure.
- 26:54Speaker 1: Besides troy, who else was chatting with?
- 26:56Speaker 2: you.
- 26:57Speaker 2: I mean I'd chat with a couple other schools, but troy was my only offer.
- 27:01Speaker 2: So I was very, very blessed when that opportunity came, and I think that was back in June when that offer was, and so we had talked about it for the end of June, end of July, and then committed July 31st.
- 27:16Speaker 2: I think it was Well there, at least you could verbally commit Going into your senior year.
- 27:21Speaker 1: Going into the senior year, you were committed to Troy before you even started your football season.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Right, that's awesome.
- 27:25Speaker 2: So, yeah, very blessed, very thankful for that, though.
- 27:28Speaker 1: That's cool, man.
- 27:28Speaker 1: It's a dream, dude, you know that's a dream, Congrats.
- 27:31Speaker 1: So there you now.
- 27:32Speaker 1: You're there, right, right, step backs happen.
- 27:35Speaker 1: Acl tear doesn't mean you're done forever.
- 27:36Speaker 1: Like rehab, the heck out of it.
- 27:38Speaker 1: No-transcript athletes, right, that are in high school, whatever debating like, well, do I play college sports or not?
- 28:17Speaker 1: I'm like dude, do it because it's yielding character traits that have to be forged, you know, and earned.
- 28:25Speaker 1: That will carry you for sure, um, and help you ascend in whatever direction career path you go in the future of like hard work, discipline, grit, consistency, consistency, like you mentioned for sure, willingness to do things that other people are unwilling to do.
- 28:40Speaker 1: It's going to set you apart for your career and for everything.
- 28:43Speaker 1: And also I mean parenting, right, and we have kids in the future right, as a role model for your kids, ascending in your career, professionally pursuing challenging things, your own fitness and workout programs as you continue to age right, like I'm, you know, mid thirties now and like I still, I want to really focus on that.
- 29:00Speaker 1: You know, for all those same reasons and some of the stuff I remember in college has trickled into that it's been the foundation of, like, all those character traits that I hope to, you know, project you know, what I mean, but anyway, so that's awesome, man, Like it's only going to help you in the future, Absolutely All right.
- 29:16Speaker 1: So this, uh, here's my question.
- 29:18Speaker 1: Right Cause you did it, you got a D one scholarship.
- 29:21Speaker 1: You're there.
- 29:21Speaker 1: What recommendations would you rec would you have for high school kids playing sports now basketball, football, baseball, whatever right.
- 29:29Speaker 1: What would you recommend if they have aspirations to play college sports?
- 29:33Speaker 2: Like I said first, consistency, that's for sure, but I mean just not to get down.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Like, even if you're not where you want to be at the moment, whether that be for injury or if you need to work on a skill more, I would say, stick to it and just don't give up at all, that's for sure, because I mean life will hit you, but as long as you stay the course, keep your faith right, you know, and put God first, I think everything works out in your favor.
- 30:03Speaker 2: If you do that, that's awesome.
- 30:05Speaker 1: I agree with all that.
- 30:05Speaker 1: Yeah, totally true.
- 30:07Speaker 1: And the consistency, right, right, just keep working.
- 30:15Speaker 1: You know, I think that's just one more day, you know that's what I've always heard in the past too.
- 30:18Speaker 2: Yeah, we have a core value at a troy.
- 30:18Speaker 2: We call it compete, and what's tied to it is go get one more.
- 30:22Speaker 2: So, and that applies for everything like we're doing sprints, go get one more.
- 30:27Speaker 2: You know, if you're tired and you, you know there's one more route to run, go get one more.
- 30:33Speaker 2: That's always.
- 30:33Speaker 2: That's something that coach parker has told us there, and I think it's very true.
- 30:37Speaker 2: So love that.
- 30:39Speaker 1: That's awesome um the I imagine, uh, you're.
- 30:44Speaker 1: You know, I remember in college fatigue right, just being tired.
- 30:47Speaker 1: I'm like I can't sleep enough.
- 30:50Speaker 1: You know, naps were gathered at all times, you know, at any time possible.
- 30:54Speaker 2: That is one thing I've learned in college.
- 30:56Speaker 2: I never napped in high school yeah, never did.
- 30:58Speaker 2: And then I get to college and it's like, anytime you can get a 20 minute nap, 30 minute nap, it's like I'll take it, I'm out, yeah, I know exactly what you're talking about.
- 31:06Speaker 1: I would get yeah.
- 31:07Speaker 1: So you recommend power naps?
- 31:09Speaker 2: I would say 20, 30 minutes I think is good.
- 31:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I would only do it if I was like in between class.
- 31:14Speaker 2: If I had the time.
- 31:15Speaker 2: Yeah, but most days I couldn't.
- 31:17Speaker 2: So if I had the opportunity I would take it.
- 31:20Speaker 1: But yeah, I remember, I remember coming between classes.
- 31:24Speaker 1: You know, if I had like a class on this side of campus and the other side of campus and I was able to like in between go to my dorm or something like that, right, I would like get a snack and I'm like I have 10 minutes.
- 31:32Speaker 1: I'm laying down, I'm taking a nap, you know, I will set my alarm for nine and a half minutes.
- 31:38Speaker 2: I'm taking a nap, you know right, yeah, and I have this little, this little bike at troy, so electric bike.
- 31:43Speaker 2: So I'm going from class to class and then, like you said, if you have like a you know few minutes, 20 minutes, it's like I'm right back real quick.
- 31:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm gonna lay down, yeah, fall, sleep.
- 31:53Speaker 1: Those are the best naps, you know.
- 31:54Speaker 1: It's like if you're very tired and like just make it happen real quick, you know.
- 31:58Speaker 1: Uh, that always felt pretty good after it refuels you?
- 32:02Speaker 1: yeah, I think it does, yeah yeah, so napping for sure, that's that's something you recommend.
- 32:06Speaker 1: Yeah, 20 minutes.
- 32:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I definitely napped in high school for sure, really Occasionally in class.
- 32:12Speaker 1: I'm sorry, but I would get home.
- 32:15Speaker 1: You know, if I got out of school early, you know I'd go home and I would grab lunch real quick and I'd nap for an hour, right.
- 32:31Speaker 2: And then go back to school for practice.
- 32:32Speaker 2: I was definitely a napper, you know.
- 32:33Speaker 2: Yeah, in high school you did you play.
- 32:34Speaker 1: I know you played a football, I think basketball and then volleyball as well, yeah, and baseball and baseball Dang.
- 32:37Speaker 1: So I was fortunate, um, yeah, I mean.
- 32:38Speaker 1: So I played um.
- 32:39Speaker 1: My junior year I was battling some back issues I had battled.
- 32:42Speaker 1: See, this is where all this motivation comes from my enthusiasm and passion to helping athletes and active people in general.
- 32:50Speaker 1: Starting in late middle school, I had battled Osgood-Slaughter's disease is what it's called.
- 32:54Speaker 1: It's just growing pains, right, and it's just like a knee pain.
- 32:57Speaker 1: My knees always hurt and they were super tender and sensitive and I was told there's nothing I can do about it, which there is.
- 33:04Speaker 1: You can work on stability and mechanics and like work on stuff to make it less aggressive or make the situation worse.
- 33:10Speaker 1: But I didn't know that, you know, I didn't know.
- 33:13Speaker 1: So I just powered through, right.
- 33:15Speaker 1: So I battled knee issues, just knee pain.
- 33:18Speaker 1: It just bothered me.
- 33:18Speaker 1: I was hobbling around, um.
- 33:20Speaker 1: And then, sophomore year in high school, I had battled some intermittent back issues.
- 33:23Speaker 1: It's it seemed like sacroiliac joint instability and like low back hypermobility.
- 33:28Speaker 1: Okay, super fixable.
- 33:29Speaker 1: We fix that with kids all the time, right, you're one of them, right, um, it's like jay gets involved.
- 33:36Speaker 1: And I was hobbling around.
- 33:38Speaker 1: I missed half of my jv basketball season as a sophomore, because my back was bothering me and that'd be in there in the weight room, because I was like I want to, I'm getting behind, I want to work on some stuff, right, and I'll do bench, I'll do upper body stuff.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Coaches are like what are you doing, volstead?
- 33:51Speaker 1: You know like if your back hurts so much, then how can you work out?
- 33:53Speaker 1: And I'm like dude, I'm not doing lower body, it just hurts when I sprint, you know.
- 33:57Speaker 1: So I wasn't getting.
- 33:57Speaker 1: There's no benefit of the doubt, you know.
- 34:03Speaker 1: I'm like here.
- 34:04Speaker 2: It's like you must be faking it.
- 34:05Speaker 1: I was like dude, do you think I'm faking it?
- 34:06Speaker 1: You know so anyway.
- 34:08Speaker 1: So then I battled back issues like that Junior year.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Same intermittent back stuff would come and go um and still occasional knee issues.
- 34:15Speaker 1: But that's definitely a lot better.
- 34:16Speaker 1: My growing pains were pretty much gone at that point.
- 34:18Speaker 1: Same battle, some back stuff, but fortunately I was pretty healthy my whole senior year.
- 34:26Speaker 1: So anyway, with all being said, um, my, my junior year I played football.
- 34:31Speaker 1: We won the state championship that year.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Season went pretty deep and I was battling back stuff, so I did not play basketball that year and I waited until baseball season and I played baseball.
- 34:41Speaker 1: I was a middle relief pitcher, okay yeah, the long all I can haul, I can see that.
- 34:47Speaker 1: And then my senior year I played football again.
- 34:49Speaker 1: We didn't go as deep.
- 34:51Speaker 1: I was able to play basketball.
- 34:52Speaker 1: So I played basketball that year right after football, just jumped right into it, and then I decided to play volleyball instead of baseball.
- 34:59Speaker 1: My senior year.
- 35:00Speaker 2: That's what that was, okay, yeah.
- 35:01Speaker 1: So I lettered in all four varsity sports.
- 35:03Speaker 1: I played two.
- 35:04Speaker 1: My junior year I decided to not do baseball.
- 35:06Speaker 1: My senior year I played volleyball instead, and the reason was because I had some buddies and friends that were playing volleyball and I was like it could be more fun.
- 35:15Speaker 1: I didn't really want to just be a relief pitcher.
- 35:17Speaker 1: I was like, well, let me do volleyball.
- 35:19Speaker 1: I had played in middle school, so I had the foundations and I went to tryouts and a really influential coach, um, who recently passed, unfortunately, he was a big influence.
- 35:29Speaker 1: He, uh, at tryouts was like he's like dude, if you let me work with you, I'll get you a D one scholarship of volleyball.
- 35:37Speaker 1: At this time I was like six, five.
- 35:38Speaker 1: I was like one, 95.
- 35:39Speaker 1: I was thin, slender, you know, skinny, uh, but I could, I was athletic, I could jump, you know, and I could hit.
- 35:45Speaker 1: So the guy was like dude, if you, let me work with you, I'll get you a D1 scholarship.
- 35:48Speaker 1: And he did.
- 35:49Speaker 1: I got after it.
- 35:50Speaker 1: I worked hard and I practiced.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Everything you're describing, you know, this coach was.
- 35:54Speaker 1: He believed in me and he saw something in me and I really appreciated that and I had been getting recruited for football because.
- 36:01Speaker 1: So I was looking at schools that would let me do both.
- 36:05Speaker 1: I was like, why not play both?
- 36:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:07Speaker 1: So I needed to find it was a narrow gap because I was like they need to have a football program and a men's volleyball.
- 36:13Speaker 1: Men's volleyball is not exactly super popular compared to baseball or football or basketball.
- 36:17Speaker 2: Especially back then, right, Because I don't think it was.
- 36:19Speaker 2: I mean, it's not that not too popular now, it's still not popular.
- 36:23Speaker 1: Not as much.
- 36:23Speaker 1: You know what I mean.
- 36:24Speaker 1: It's definitely a little more.
- 36:25Speaker 1: But there's hubs.
- 36:26Speaker 1: There's like the New England area, like Penn State is an example of powerhouse in men's volleyball.
- 36:30Speaker 1: So the New England up there there's Midwest Illinois, missouri, ohio and some Indiana and then the West Coast, which is like California and that's it.
- 36:39Speaker 1: Yeah, so there's like those little hubs been recruited by those regions of state, mostly Midwest colleges, and I got two offers both were football and volleyball to play college, which was cool.
- 36:52Speaker 1: So I was submitting all these tapes and talking to coaches and like here's my volleyball tape, here's my football tape, talking to both coaches.
- 36:57Speaker 1: Um, and fortunately, one of the schools that that volleyball coach was influential, knew had some connections at Quincy University and they were a D1 volleyball program and then football at the time it was duly fitted to NAIA and D2.
- 37:13Speaker 1: So I was able to play both.
- 37:16Speaker 1: So we leveraged both and talked to both coaches and they're like we'll give you.
- 37:20Speaker 1: So I got a football scholarship, I got a volleyball scholarship and I got an academic scholarship.
- 37:25Speaker 1: That's awesome.
- 37:26Speaker 1: So I was able to play both sports.
- 37:27Speaker 1: That's cool and the really cool thing and other thing I recommend for young athletes too that like multiple, multitask, multi-sport for sure.
- 37:35Speaker 1: Like you play basketball right, that translates right.
- 37:39Speaker 1: Like some aspects of basketball translate to be a better athlete in football and some football aspects translate to be better athlete in basketball.
- 37:51Speaker 2: And it's like so it's multi well-rounded.
- 37:53Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 37:53Speaker 2: Totally yeah, growing up, my dad always made me play a different sport than just football you know, he said let's go play baseball or basketball.
- 37:58Speaker 2: Those are kind of the three I stuck to.
- 38:00Speaker 2: Yeah, but yeah for sure, definitely play multiple sports I agree that I completely.
- 38:04Speaker 1: Yeah, cool, um, but anyway.
- 38:06Speaker 1: So that's my story about sports and stuff and some of the uh behind um underlying motivations of why I decided to go to sports rehab route as a sports physical therapist, cause there was like a lot of things that I missed and I'm like man that's fixable.
- 38:21Speaker 1: I just didn't know, right, I wasn't able to have the guidance or the the way to help it.
- 38:27Speaker 1: You know what I mean, right, um, and I, yeah, it was just a bummer.
- 38:30Speaker 1: So now I'm like I can help people, especially athletes, active people.
- 38:33Speaker 1: You know, yeah, um, but anyway.
- 38:36Speaker 1: So, underlying message for you, then you would agree young athlete, hey, I want to play d1 sport.
- 38:42Speaker 1: I want to play college.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Right, cool, work on consistency, just work hard, get after it, know what you're good at and not good at.
- 38:50Speaker 1: Work on your skills that you can improve on Totally.
- 38:53Speaker 1: Is that accurate?
- 38:53Speaker 1: And then don't be afraid to play multiple sports.
- 38:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I would totally say that, yeah, play baseball, play whatever it is, I mean in high school, that's kind of your time to do it when you get to college.
- 39:04Speaker 2: I mean I know someone, that Troy, that plays baseball and football, but it's, you know, it's pretty rare to do that.
- 39:10Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, but I mean I would say high school, yeah, take advantage of it, because that time you know coming I can't believe it's already gone for me, you know.
- 39:18Speaker 1: High school time.
- 39:19Speaker 2: Yeah, high school.
- 39:29Speaker 1: It so, but it was fun though.
- 39:29Speaker 1: That's yeah, man, that's awesome For now.
- 39:30Speaker 1: Then, wrapping this up, okay, what for young, for freshmen coming into college to excel right and win favor of the coaches and the team and like do well.
- 39:44Speaker 1: What recommendations do you have for incoming freshmen?
- 39:52Speaker 2: Yeah, set yourself apart, for sure.
- 39:53Speaker 2: Sure, don't just follow the crowd, don't just do the minimum, like I was saying earlier, don't just do what's required of you.
- 39:56Speaker 2: Um, put in the extra work.
- 39:57Speaker 2: Um, something I learned in college was you know, take advantage of you know opportunities where you can just go in and maybe get an extra stretch in or do a little more mobility, stuff like that.
- 40:08Speaker 2: Um, because before I would just go and just, you know, try to work out twice a day and you know, try to twice run in a day, something like that.
- 40:16Speaker 2: But you know, take advantage of you know opportunities to recover as well something I've learned, um, and be ready for sudden change as well.
- 40:23Speaker 2: That's something else.
- 40:24Speaker 2: What do you mean?
- 40:25Speaker 2: Like, if I guess you could say, schedule wise, if you're planning on, you know the coaches may say you know, we're just going to do this, this and that.
- 40:33Speaker 2: Like, hey, we're gonna work out this time, run it this time.
- 40:37Speaker 2: They may throw some extra meetings in or times may change a little bit here and there.
- 40:41Speaker 2: So I would say that sudden change as well, be able to adapt, yeah, that's a good way.
- 40:46Speaker 1: Just roll with the punches.
- 40:46Speaker 1: Yeah, great point.
- 40:48Speaker 1: I would agree with that for sure.
- 40:50Speaker 1: Awesome man, we're going to follow you, troy.
- 40:53Speaker 1: Football 2024.
- 40:55Speaker 1: I'm excited for football season.
- 40:57Speaker 1: I mean, the draft was what two weeks ago?
- 40:58Speaker 1: Something like that.
- 40:59Speaker 1: Like, here we go, we're getting close, almost that time again.
- 41:08Speaker 1: We're almost there.
- 41:09Speaker 1: I always love the beginning of football season, man.
- 41:09Speaker 1: Um, I always feel like I I boost up my workouts, like in july and august, because my football season's coming up.
- 41:12Speaker 2: you know, it's just like brain to my brain yeah, totally no, I'm looking forward to it, man, I'm putting in the work now and then get ready for the season coming up, so I'm looking forward to it a lot.
- 41:21Speaker 1: We'll follow up.
- 41:22Speaker 1: We're gonna follow you guys and see how you're all doing, and Best of luck, man.
