- 0:13[SPEAKER_02]: What's everybody?
- 0:13[SPEAKER_02]: Welcome, tutors on SI podcast.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_02]: Getting underway.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_02]: We've got our pads on here at the suitors on SI, HQ is Oklahoma has their pads on.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_02]: Finally, and they're out of the rugby fields, which is everything that you could possibly.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_02]: Well, we're gonna break it all down Ryan Chapman here.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_02]: We've got our fearless leader up in Tulsa, the man, the myth, the legend, noted Tulsa drummer, John Hoover, boss, what's up, how are you?
- 0:41[SPEAKER_01]: uh... i'm not a noted anything when it comes to drumming up now i just i'd goof around i play on the drums i do not play drums i play on the drums so there's a difference i listen to music while hitting these things that are in front of me with sticks it's pretty cool it's fun but uh... yeah man our hands are in the dirt we got sweat pouring down a box two days or thing of the past this is called training camp and they have fallen right in our lap first day of full pads yesterday that was awesome
- 1:09[SPEAKER_02]: It was good to see Carson and Ryan were out there and about along with our guy Brady who's back in the bumper, bunker, bumper, goodness.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_02]: Carson, have you not thought out?
- 1:20[SPEAKER_02]: Have you rehydrated from yesterday?
- 1:22[SPEAKER_02]: I was very, very worried for you, Abraham, Brady, all in great shape, you know what I'm right?
- 1:26[SPEAKER_02]: But it was just one of those, it's a scorcher and there's no amount of water you can drink that doesn't make you feel like a raisin at the end of a day like that.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it was a warm one and I made the mistake of wearing khaki pants, never again this time of year that is a rookie move I've been here for a little while now that one's inexcusable.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_00]: So next time it's going to be shorts, but other than that, great.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_00]: I love feeling sweaty this time of year.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_00]: That means that things are really kicking in the year.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_00]: So a few weeks away from game one.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_02]: To trade off, we will all take Ryan Avers out there in the mix.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_02]: As well of course, an Aver and Brady did collaborate on a fantastic practice observations Oklahoma sooners on SI.com is the place to be my observation though, Ryan Aver.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_02]: He was super helpful.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_02]: He came to Casa de Chapman, helped put a TV out on the back patio mainly so that my mother will be happy.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_02]: First off, she said we owe you dinner.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_02]: Secondly, the Brains are one and one in the new setup, so I need you to get those numbers a little bit better.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_03]: Well it's a small sample size.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_03]: Let the sample size get bigger and the record I'm sure will improve with the way that the braids are going.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, glad to help in any time I get on the right side of your mom and your dad, both of your parents are fantastic people.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_03]: So glad to help.
- 2:45[SPEAKER_02]: Well, at first off, I don't know what happened to me.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_02]: Secondly, it's very important that I don't need to know.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we all are asking the question.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_02]: It's important for A, right on the right side of my dad, because Aver's slow pitch softball strikes on, we'll get smaller and smaller and smaller if he doesn't.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_02]: And so, you know, we're on to you.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_02]: We're on to you.
- 3:03[SPEAKER_02]: Those Chapman's, they talk.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_03]: Hey, you got to, you know, get your advantages where you can.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_03]: But I also want to go back to Carson's talk about dress in yesterday.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_03]: I've been around this beat a long time and I don't wear shorts to these things, so I think you just got to toughen up a little bit, Carson.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no that's fair.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_00]: I've lived in my journalism career mostly in Cold places.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_00]: I've been in Wyoming, Colorado.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm pretty good when it comes to those November, December games.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_00]: The playoff game last year was nothing but man, I've got to take a little bit of time in the summer.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_00]: I play a lot of golf.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_00]: I spend a lot of time outside.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_00]: Gonna be a little bit more appropriately dressed in my opinion, but to each their own, I guess.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, listen, it's one of those that we were looking at the 10 day this morning and the first time we see something that is under a hundred is like the 25th of August.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_02]: So we're in it.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_02]: That's it.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_02]: It's not good.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_02]: The actual biggest upset usually when we're headed up to the rugby fields, which is always an exciting time year usually there's some sort of rain shower the night before because it's muddy and muggy and we avoided all of that, which
- 4:10[SPEAKER_02]: I'm sure that everyone in Norman appreciated that as they are getting after it.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_02]: We are entering the stage where I no longer a small sample size, we're starting to get some stuff in and we'll get to some of the injury updates and things like that is there are some bumps and bruises, nothing major as of Wednesday at 12 12 PM.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_02]: But I think that this is not going to shock anybody.
- 4:32[SPEAKER_02]: I think this matches up to expectation.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_02]: But it sounds like the Oklahoma defense with returning 11 guys with experience and having some additions like a coal soul and having some young guys prepared to step up.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_02]: It sounds like the so-called home of defense is making their mark early and fall camp Carson and it's one of those situations that I don't know if
- 4:53[SPEAKER_02]: Welcome, my fans are in kind of like pinch their self mode and you go back to the deep inches of recent history where you could say you lose an armace in Thomas you lose a grease in a hole in a couple of years back you lose a dating stats when you're able to replace them with more kip Lewis knowing how to keep.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_02]: It's kind of nuts that you know five years in it's almost like I don't know how many questions we have at the first 12 13 guys Brittville is going to try it off his defensive side by.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, 12, 13 guys might be conservative too.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_00]: When you look at how many players we've heard rave reviews about, I thought it was fascinating.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_00]: Kip Lewis hearing him talk.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_00]: That was one of the more along when did Kip Lewis interviews.
- 5:29[SPEAKER_00]: I thought more talkative than usual.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_00]: Really, I thought what was interesting is he talked about how the culture is just gotten that much better year in and year out.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_00]: Under Brent Venables obviously he's entering his fifth year, which is also Brent Venables fifth year just.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_00]: Hearing how they've been able to slowly make the defense better and better to the point that it is today, arguably the best defense in the SEC last year, arguably a top two three defense in college football last year.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_00]: There weren't a lot of pieces to work with.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_00]: He had inherited not such a great situation.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, under Lincoln Riley, the offense was always fantastic.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_00]: The defense, the Alex Grinch Nightmares, you name it.
- 6:14[SPEAKER_00]: That was always a problem side of the ball.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_00]: And now it's kind of flipped.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, OU fans would like the other side of the ball to be better.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_00]: But when you look at the offense wasn't great last year, the defense was that good, and that got them to the playoff.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_00]: Fan should be excited about that.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_00]: This defense is expected even without our Mason Thomas Kindle Daniels Marvin Jones Jr. Name your player who left this defense shouldn't take much if any step backwards this year, which has got to be thrilling for sooner fans.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_02]: And Ryan, I know you were you Carson, Brady Rollover there with Kip for a good deal that he was talking about yesterday and he was awesome yesterday, but I'm sure he's tired of hearing like this for the coming,
- 6:56[SPEAKER_02]: was there the very first off season like Carson saying and saw a group that poor, you know, daddy's that's been and shot white and was it David a way boo who like they just had to like go out there and play every snap and now you're talking about a group a year ago that
- 7:13[SPEAKER_02]: Kip Lewis, Owen Heinecki, Kobe McKinsey, Samuel Masiko, they were happy to rotate all of those guys in.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_02]: And on top of that Kiddle Day is a treasure pet like, it's kind of nuts for some of these guys and it's just a few of them.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_02]: But like, I Kip Lewis, who's been there since beginning to like, you're now entering the expectation area season with the expectation of last year.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_02]: It's like, we think they're going to be really good.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_02]: How good can they be?
- 7:34[SPEAKER_02]: Now it's like, yeah, if you are anything other than one of the best defenses in the country, what the heck happened.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, the expectation has changed, you know, greatly over the last few years since Kip Lewis has been around.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_03]: And that's what Brent Vinnables was brought into do is to completely transform this defense and he's done it.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, you just think about
- 7:57[SPEAKER_03]: You know, we're talking about now as Carson was talking about as you were talking about leading into that about the depth pieces and who's going to be the the second string guy at some of these spots or who's going to be the third guy who's going to be in the mix there versus.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_03]: Hey, we don't have a guy.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, there were times when you look at the corner back room and you're like, they only have one that they feel like they can put out there and, you know, be able to hold their own against a big 12 offences at the time.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_03]: Now it's completely different.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_03]: The depth is there.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, you just got to look at the line back room when you talk about.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_03]: uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh
- 8:56[SPEAKER_03]: And then I looked at yesterday, I got a chance to spend quite a bit of time watching the defense of Lyman, and especially the edge guys, but all of them, and you can just tell the difference with that group.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_03]: I know I say it virtually every time we talk about this, but that was the area where they needed to grow the most, making the move to the SEC.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_03]: And they've done that, and now it feels like it's not self-sustaining, but it's a sustainable where as a couple years ago, you were just hoping to catch, you know, lightning in a bottle with one guide, much less 11.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_02]: So no, we're not going to head ourselves here, right?
- 9:37[SPEAKER_02]: Because our Mason, second round pit, could have been a first round guy.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_02]: Sounds like he's just absolutely shredding in Kansas City, Grayson Hulton, we know that.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_02]: And while there's some questions in the dep, it felt like there were some questions that dep at some of those spots about this time last year than suddenly you see like even a market strong step in and have an impact.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_02]: And it's one of those things that I don't doubt rent venibles to defensive mind, but it's just one of those spots where it's not
- 10:03[SPEAKER_02]: something that you've been able to bank on at Oklahoma since the late 2000s right into, you know, Brent's final years where you just go, yep, I sleep easy at night knowing that the defense is going to be able to reload and not have this massive drop off.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_01]: What's cool about it is he immediately began changing the culture and here we are five years later.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_01]: It's a completely different culture.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_01]: It's now when you look at Oklahoma football,
- 10:32[SPEAKER_01]: as Brent likes to refer to.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_01]: The standard is great defense.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_01]: You play great defense at Oklahoma.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, it's possible to play great defense at OU.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_01]: What happened during all those Mike Stoops years all those Alex Grinch years and so rough and McNeil and so on and so forth.
- 10:46[SPEAKER_01]: They had great offense and they could not sustain things on defense.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_01]: They ended up being terrible on defense in a lot of areas and several years they were terrible.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_01]: So
- 10:56[SPEAKER_01]: When you put together the kind of depth that Brent has, he and his staff, and now the last couple of years Jim Nagy and his staff, have identified those guys, have recruited those guys, have landed those guys, have gotten those guys paid, and now they're starting to retain some of those guys, some of the bigger names and stuff.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, a Grayson-Holton can come in as an under unheralded three-star recruit from San Diego, was he, so the California now he's playing for the San Francisco 49ers and the reporters who covered the 49ers are saying, holy cow, this guy's really good.
- 11:30[SPEAKER_01]: He's really disruptive.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's what we saw for three years because somehow Brent was able to get that out of him.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_01]: He wasn't a big recruit, but he was able to get that out of him.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_01]: and maximize what these guys are capable of.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_01]: You spread that across the board at all the positions.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_01]: You look at defensive back.
- 11:47[SPEAKER_01]: You look at linebacker.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_01]: You look at defensive line.
- 11:50[SPEAKER_01]: All those guys have kind of followed that same trajectory.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_01]: They come in and wonder, brand-vendibles, they become better defensive players.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_02]: I did just have to stop Ryan and I know that you were here for all of it, but Todd Bates, we know he loves him, a acronym, things like that.
- 12:08[SPEAKER_02]: What do you think Todd Bates would have thought about?
- 12:15[SPEAKER_03]: I caught where you were going without about a half way through and I just brace myself for it.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_03]: I think it would probably work for him, but this is a defense that doesn't have to forget nearly as much.
- 12:30[SPEAKER_03]: as they did a few years ago.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_03]: When Fido was a thing, there were a lot of forgettable plays in that group, and you know, roughly, you know, one of the most interesting guys to be around, but the timing on that maybe wasn't the best there during that era, but there
- 12:52[SPEAKER_03]: throwing out quite a few memorable moments rather than forgettable ones on this defense under Todd Bates and Miguel Chavez, especially up front.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_02]: rough and an electric factory, but it's a lot more fun when top baits when you've got bad asses to go along with that.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_02]: And part of that's going to be the next way of the guys, right?
- 13:12[SPEAKER_02]: Of course, we talked to Nigel Smith yesterday, he's got a big fall camp ahead of them.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_02]: He talked about like being in touch with Jonah Lalu, who's now with the Raiders for the exact transition that he made for Nigel Smith.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_02]: This fall camp, he says about stacking days.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_02]: And you go back to, it sounds like two going back to,
- 13:34[SPEAKER_02]: uh... he had nothing but praise for james tank caring to the true freshman as well a it sounds like one of those spots where trump well send good reviews bishop tomis good reviews but uh... it sounds like tank character's really pushing to be in that group which uh... i think they're gonna love because it forces the best at a Nigel Smith and she was anybody else that wants to keep the freshman out of the rotation
- 13:57[SPEAKER_00]: It may be weird to say this because we know that David Stone and Jaden Jackson are going to be the starters, but I think that is one of the most interesting position groups on this team because we've heard so many good things about Nigel Smith, Trent Wilson, Bishop Thomas, Taint Carrons and even being a year one guy.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's going to be fascinating to see how they diffy up those reps early in the year with a rather easy game against DUTEP, a rather challenging game against Michigan and week two.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's going to be interesting and Nigel Smith just hearing him, how we recover from some injury things last year.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_00]: Now we finally get a chance to show what you can do.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_00]: I think a lot of people are cautiously excited for that, seeing what he and Trent Wilson can do after playing very minimally in their last couple of years here.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that's going to be neat.
- 14:43[SPEAKER_00]: Nigel Smith just hearing what he's learned from guys like David Stone, Jayden Jackson.
- 14:48[SPEAKER_00]: That's as good of
- 14:51[SPEAKER_00]: Todd Bates, the acronym guy that we all know and love.
- 14:54[SPEAKER_00]: Don't a fantastic job with this offensive line.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_00]: I think he's a really good hands to take a big step this year.
- 15:01[SPEAKER_02]: It's something to I think who is a little underrated here.
- 15:04[SPEAKER_02]: We all talked about our basin goes down.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_02]: Taylor wine steps up and PJ a little bit more under the radar, but he was playing a career highs of snaps this year.
- 15:13[SPEAKER_02]: The expectation is PJ and Danny Aquail come on, but
- 15:18[SPEAKER_02]: You look at it in the year ago, like, Jaden Jackson, all the credit in the world to him for trying to play through it, but you and I were sitting next to each other cars on the field in Tuscaloosa where you see the massive honking brace on Jaden Jackson's knee and after the, was it the second drive, you're able to just rotate it like one of the other talk about things is that Oklahoma, not just was down our Mason down the stretch last year.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_02]: They were able to withstand a guy like Jaden Jackson being way more mobile-hooven and that's.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_02]: That's just how you have to exist and how you have to survive.
- 15:46[SPEAKER_02]: If you're going to be a playoff caliber team with this kind of schedule, you've got to have your David Stones to your Jayden Jackson's, but who you also got to have those other guys stepping, because you know you're going to have to use the whole roster that defensive side of the ball.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, for sure.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_01]: And something that Ryan Aver spoke to earlier when you're down there watching the defensive line,
- 16:04[SPEAKER_01]: and the depth that Todd Bates is working with and Miguel Chavus for that matter.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_01]: He said they look different and he's Ryan said he said that several times.
- 16:12[SPEAKER_01]: Well, there's a reason they do look different.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_01]: They're all bigger.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_01]: When Bates got here, remember there was zero guys on the roster.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_01]: Zero defensive linemen on the roster, over 300 pounds.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_01]: On this roster I just counted up there's currently four which surprised me I thought that was a little bit low But some of those guys that were near 300 to kind of slim down a little bit so they went under and a couple of guys graduated who were over 300 So last year six guys on the roster who were who were big
- 16:39[SPEAKER_01]: look like and played like cc defensive lineman Oklahoma that's the one element that that was missing from this team since about 2012 2014 is you didn't have a guy on the roster who could come in like a David Stone or was so steady and so consistent like a jagen jackson or some of those guys that were on last year's team
- 17:02[SPEAKER_01]: who could make a play, Grace and Houghton, who could make a play with the game on the line against the Houston Cougars at Gailor family, Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
- 17:10[SPEAKER_01]: You need him to come in to get a safety to win the game.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they just didn't have the, they had a guy here in the had a guy there, you know, every, every couple of years, but they didn't have a stack of them waiting to go.
- 17:21[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what this team has.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_01]: They have a stack of guys coming off of last year's team as well.
- 17:26[SPEAKER_01]: A stack of guys who can go in there at any point in any game against any opponent.
- 17:30[SPEAKER_01]: play well, hold down, you know, the interior.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_01]: So that's something that this team has needed, and some of the Brent Vendibles in his crew has finally, in my opinion, have established.
- 17:41[SPEAKER_02]: And I think, too, it's important that they've also, you've got those guys on the interior, and this is no disrespect to someone like an Eric Stryker, things like that.
- 17:48[SPEAKER_02]: But the guys that you would label in a specimen category coming off the edge of, uh, when you stand next to
- 17:59[SPEAKER_02]: It looks a lot different and this is the thing with like PJ for instance.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know what he's like continues to be listed at early in my career.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_02]: I did a little bit of thunder coverage and stuff like that and there's nothing more humbling than like.
- 18:15[SPEAKER_02]: seeing just these mammoth centers that make you feel like you're like, I'm not a tall person, I'm not a big person, but I haven't felt like I'm a kindergarten in a long time, sitting next to Stephen Adams, you feel like you kindergarten.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_02]: Every time I stand next to PJ, I'm like, this guy, he, he gives off like, I'm six eight.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_02]: I'm that big in it.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_02]: I know he's not, let's just that, it was not that big, but he's one of those guys that, yeah, you look at it and go, yeah, they didn't have these,
- 18:39[SPEAKER_02]: growing around Norman here the last couple of years before print venables and I'm excited to see that kind of transition to Ryan to linebacker for instance.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_02]: Like we know Kit, we know Owen, very excited to see those guys Cole Sullivan's law excitement, but James Nesta continues to look like the transformation from dual sport guy to like, no, I'm just a football player and I'm a linebacker and oh, that's the linebacker in Marcus James who I think we can't wait to get the blue jersey off of.
- 19:05[SPEAKER_02]: I'm excited for this next way behind Kip and Owen.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I think that's going to be one of the most fascinating things to watch throughout the rest of a camp is the way that those guys develop because now that Owen Heineke's back in the fold, everything pretty much with the exception of the sort of the dual cheetahs depending on what they want out of that spot at the time, everything set.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_03]: But behind that,
- 19:33[SPEAKER_03]: They've got some guys who are really promising and you know, it reminds me a last year when we heard a lot about Taylor wine.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_03]: I know Taylor wine said that the PJ was that next guy although I think PJ's been around a little bit too much to sort of come out of nowhere like that, but who's the Owen Hayenki on this team not not the same story not the, you know, walk on coming out and know where type of guy.
- 20:01[SPEAKER_03]: But who's that linebacker who takes that next, you know, significant step?
- 20:09[SPEAKER_03]: Is it James Nesta who we've heard so much about going back to the spring?
- 20:13[SPEAKER_03]: Is it Marcus James, once he's able to get that, no contact jersey off?
- 20:18[SPEAKER_03]: Like you mentioned, is it, you know, some, some other guy, unfortunately, Taylor Hunt or
- 20:29[SPEAKER_03]: It's going to be one of the things that I'm most looking forward to here over the remainder of campus, how that position continues to develop.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_02]: car, so let's go to litigation corner for two seconds.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_02]: I need to bring you in some way smarter than me.
- 20:43[SPEAKER_02]: There is going to be a new face here in Norman pretty soon.
- 20:46[SPEAKER_02]: It sounds like reported across a bunch of spots.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_02]: Pete Nicos had as far as George was on that at Scoop.
- 20:53[SPEAKER_02]: Danny Sia, Siley, Siali coming in from Arkansas, a guy that and Wub, Sia.
- 21:00[SPEAKER_02]: Sia, Sia, Ely.
- 21:02[SPEAKER_02]: that Danny, big daddy coming in from Arkansas 6 6 3 19, whatever you want to be called, we'll call you that my guy.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_02]: One of the guys Carson that a beneficiary of the TRO that was granted a couple of weeks ago now, we had asked for it, venables about it.
- 21:22[SPEAKER_02]: media day, they said, hey, anything is possible, but someone that here's the important thing, unlike Ted Davis, for instance, Carson, who just, Michael Scott bankruptcy, I declare portal despite the fact that he had that, Danny was someone who had entered the portal was waiting on something like this, so he's, he'll be eligible to come in and give Oklahoma's a mixture depth along the interior.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's an interesting move for sure.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_00]: We didn't know if somebody from last year's team might step in like a Dominic Williams, Marvin Jones Jr. someone along those lines, but hearing him, Arkansas admittedly not known for great defense.
- 21:57[SPEAKER_00]: That team was bad last year, but their offense was really good and the defense was just consistently bad.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_00]: But looking at Danny Sayili's numbers, he was,
- 22:04[SPEAKER_00]: Fairly good for them is PFF grades were pretty good.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_00]: I believe this overall defensive grade was like a 66 so not bad.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_00]: It had a couple of tackles for loss.
- 22:12[SPEAKER_00]: But thing about D tackle, they don't need someone to step in and just play 50 snaps a game.
- 22:18[SPEAKER_00]: If this guy could play 5, 10 snaps, I have any sort of role on this team.
- 22:23[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's a win.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_00]: Having someone that's played in the SEC against really good opponents.
- 22:28[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's something that can help you too.
- 22:30[SPEAKER_00]: So just adding one more order face in that
- 22:35[SPEAKER_01]: here's the thing guys what did I just get done talking about it would be number five and six six three nineteen three hundred twenty pound guy coming in six what six to play nose guard on a team with four three hundred pounders already in the lineup uh shall we say it's huge could be huge I think if you're a cool home you're hoping
- 22:56[SPEAKER_02]: If he comes in and hey, when I add someone to a spear the center of that goal line package or like a third one, fourth and one, honestly, if he comes in and plays a ton of big snaps and it's not like one of the stories of the season across college football, probably a bad thing right as far as that probably means not kind of would you have it had the injury luck that you wanted to, but
- 23:17[SPEAKER_02]: sure something up and I think here's the important thing to who how many times going back from the start of the portal have you and I gone through various portal windows and been like hey, Oklahoma probably needs to add like a backup quarterback, but you're in a really weird spot of they like what they have on the roster.
- 23:32[SPEAKER_02]: You don't want to block a path.
- 23:33[SPEAKER_02]: How hard is it to get someone in for one year that's not really going to start?
- 23:37[SPEAKER_02]: Well, this is a guy that is looking for this kind of spot, right?
- 23:41[SPEAKER_02]: He's looking for this kind of roll car somewhere.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, if I can play
- 23:45[SPEAKER_02]: I don't do anything anything else.
- 23:47[SPEAKER_02]: And if you just use me situationally at the end of the day, I think that's kind of like a win for everybody.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_02]: And again, I don't think you don't want to expect him to come and play 35 snaps against Michigan or anything crazy like that.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_00]: No, not at all.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_00]: No one's expecting him to be a starter any point of the season, just being someone that David Soenjade and Jackson need a little bit of rest, which they very well might.
- 24:09[SPEAKER_00]: It's the SEC you play against some of the best offensive linemen in the nation.
- 24:13[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to get some bumps and bruises as a result.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_00]: Just being another guy with some of those youngsters that we've heard good things about like Smith, Wilson, Carrington, etc.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_00]: He's
- 24:25[SPEAKER_00]: is another option to throw in there, give some people some rest, and maybe it becomes a bigger role than that, maybe he is one of the more primary backups, but it's like I said a minute ago, it's really a cat-loose situation if you like for both Danyas, Danyasaiili and the Sooners.
- 24:41[SPEAKER_02]: Indeed, on the other side of the ball, just real quick, you guys were at it practice, Ryan, let's run through it real quick, sound like Tory Blaylock back dressed out, hadn't there, but not participating fully, but him being there was good.
- 24:55[SPEAKER_02]: What are we in a throwing a big panic about Michael Fassucci getting merely a precautionary day off?
- 25:02[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I don't think there's a room for panic there.
- 25:05[SPEAKER_03]: I think it obviously, I think it helps in some ways because it gives Ryan Fogé a little bit more work at the tackle spot, which we saw him work in at yesterday.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_03]: The big concern continues to be at running back.
- 25:20[SPEAKER_03]: You know, Blaylock was back out there, which was good, although wasn't going through much in the way of drills, was mostly off to the side with Jonathan Hatton, who's your, you know, the freshman who you expect to play the the most out of those two.
- 25:36[SPEAKER_03]: you know, it's one of those camp stories of the year.
- 25:40[SPEAKER_03]: I think who've talked about him last week or a couple of weeks ago, Andy Bass finally got a chance to talk to him and he's finally back out on the field and healthy after missing a couple of years.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_03]: And not saying that he's going to be a, you know, a sure fry contributor in this group, especially on the offense, but Dylan McCullough had some really good things to say about him.
- 26:04[SPEAKER_03]: And we got a chance to talk to Andy Bass about just his journey and what the last two years have been like.
- 26:13[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, the road back that's at the website, Oklahoma Sooner's on SI dot com and aim just real quick.
- 26:19[SPEAKER_02]: Something that things easy to forget because of the unfortunately back to back ACL tears for Andy Bath.
- 26:25[SPEAKER_02]: That's a guy that was already having a transition from
- 26:29[SPEAKER_02]: Heritage Halls do everything man, quarter bat.
- 26:31[SPEAKER_02]: I basically just, his position was in the end zone.
- 26:34[SPEAKER_02]: That was the 80-bass position that Heritage Hall to learn how to play running.
- 26:39[SPEAKER_02]: It's one of those things that I have to imagine or can't imagine how difficult it is to shift positions full time and not even have a sustained amount of time to implement all the things you're learning.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I know he talked to you guys about pad level and stuff like that when you've just been split in time between the practical and then the training room
- 26:59[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's been really impossible for him to find a rhythm there and he's finally starting to do that.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_03]: You know, it's funny.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_03]: Here in him talk, yesterday, you talk about the pad level and things like that and you think about pass blocking, which is so big of a piece of what running backs in this offense are asked to do and we've seen some really talented running backs not be able to get on the field consistent, not only because they haven't been able to pass block and you would think just on its face that pass blocking would be the hardest thing for Andy Bass to pick up.
- 27:35[SPEAKER_03]: because that's not something that you're doing from the quarterback spot, but dealing with Call of said that, hey, this might be our best past block guy right now.
- 27:46[SPEAKER_03]: Last week before camp started, you know, we'll see at some point what he has to say more about that or what been article to say about it, but the, you know, indications right now are good.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_03]: even if it's just a one of those fun camp stories or if it turns into a situation like uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh uh
- 28:24[SPEAKER_01]: But the fact of the matter is you cannot count this kid out.
- 28:27[SPEAKER_01]: He is extremely intelligent on the football field.
- 28:31[SPEAKER_01]: He is, he's one of those players that's elusive in a way that he sets you up.
- 28:36[SPEAKER_01]: As a defender, he sets you up and says, I'm going to make him think I'm going here, and I'm going to juke over there, whatever skills those guys use.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_01]: He manipulates the defense when he runs with football.
- 28:45[SPEAKER_01]: I know we're talking about college versus three A O, call my school football.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_01]: Two big things, two big differences, obviously.
- 28:51[SPEAKER_01]: but he's a kid that's got the skills that I think can in such certain situations help the team and translate to big plays in the SEC.
- 28:59[SPEAKER_01]: That would be something to click on SEC now on Saturday morning and here's Andy Basko in 70 yards on a on a punts sneak or something underneath a little dump off screen pass or something like that they're not expecting.
- 29:12[SPEAKER_01]: That's entirely possible.
- 29:14[SPEAKER_01]: He's got those kind of skills.
- 29:16[SPEAKER_02]: He's the designated, he's on the field, watch out for the HB toss, oh no, that's a double pass, and Andy Bass throwin' down field.
- 29:23[SPEAKER_02]: That would have been a great candidate for Josh Hyples.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_02]: We run a reverse, the first play of every game, and then it turns into a reverse pass against Texas, that just a high powered offense where it's a reverse every play.
- 29:32[SPEAKER_02]: It's stunning how that happened, how could anyone ever stop the first play of it, Josh Hype Loffins?
- 29:36[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_02]: But no, it's cool to see Andy back out there and he said to Andy too, for he taught for it was like,
- 29:43[SPEAKER_02]: 20 minutes that he was out there.
- 29:44[SPEAKER_02]: I know that I talk to be able to not care about this kind of stuff, but one of those things where that could be tough as someone that's like, I've just been waiting and waiting and waiting and he was more than gracious with everybody, which we always really, really appreciate and made it very, very cool.
- 29:58[SPEAKER_02]: It would be quite something where as it sounds like Elijah Thomas has had a pretty good second.
- 30:04[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know how to describe this.
- 30:05[SPEAKER_02]: First, we can't say, we're just going to flip the calendar and say this week's a new week.
- 30:09[SPEAKER_02]: Sounds like he's got a good second week at camp as you wrap up into that.
- 30:13[SPEAKER_02]: is this the camp for the Oklahoma kids, which later on, late stages, I would imagine that Zader Robinson gets ramped up there as well.
- 30:20[SPEAKER_02]: But Carlisle, we also got to talk to Ryan, faux J yesterday, and I think that this is going to be, we know this, right?
- 30:25[SPEAKER_02]: This is going to be one of the crucial things as we get into what can the offense be, which we're talking about here in a second.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_02]: Ryan Fogey being able to give that first tilde across, but also the fact that it sounds like he had really great things to say about heat those ideas, him and heat those.
- 30:39[SPEAKER_02]: Side ahead been battling, and also when we, you know, Brett Vinnable says, hey, we have eight to nine guys that has to see media day on the offensive line that you think can go win with.
- 30:49[SPEAKER_02]: It sounds like no a best when you're starting to count and go, okay, we know what six of those guys are.
- 30:53[SPEAKER_02]: Who are the other ones?
- 30:54[SPEAKER_02]: No a best that true Freshwood coveted.
- 30:56[SPEAKER_02]: Ryan Fogey.
- 30:57[SPEAKER_02]: another guy that is now wax poetic about the freshman from mid-loat that.
- 31:04[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's really refreshing to hear that foe J is not only able to play multiple spots, he's enthusiastic about being able to play multiple spots.
- 31:13[SPEAKER_00]: We saw how that was huge for Fibesci Wii Wii with for the end of last year with Jake Micua going down with that infection had to miss the last couple games of the year.
- 31:21[SPEAKER_00]: So that flexibility, that versatility, whatever
- 31:27[SPEAKER_00]: But I think you're right on the depth looks a lot better than maybe we expected.
- 31:31[SPEAKER_00]: We knew that this offensive line had a lot more of a foundation that did going into the 2020 five season.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_00]: Just having E-Margaret Harris coming in, Jake Mayhula.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, your youngsters like Pierre Louis, Pissouce, Fogia, but here are good things about Heathau, Zyda, Noah Best, Pete Joseph.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of the other guys, I think.
- 31:51[SPEAKER_00]: That's a big part because just like we were talking about, the ding is that the defensive linemen pick up, the offensive linemen are going to see those two.
- 31:58[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's a week after week, they're going to be facing great defensive tackles, edge rushers, it's football.
- 32:03[SPEAKER_00]: Things are going to happen.
- 32:05[SPEAKER_00]: So just having a really, really strong not only a front line, but a really strong second line.
- 32:10[SPEAKER_00]: I think is huge regardless of the five that Bill Beatonbo decides is his group in the U-Tepting.
- 32:16[SPEAKER_02]: But, and that's what's made camp so complicated so far.
- 32:19[SPEAKER_02]: Aper is almost the defense is a victim of its own success.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_02]: Defense is just like, good job, keep doing you.
- 32:28[SPEAKER_02]: Everyone wants to know it's on the offense.
- 32:30[SPEAKER_02]: And when you're looking into it, it's easy to forget that this offense is having to battle.
- 32:35[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe the best defense, they'll see, or certainly you put like Georgian Texas in that group.
- 32:40[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, he was right up there with those are the best defensive.
- 32:43[SPEAKER_02]: They'll see all year long, uh, which means that, you know, some of the good nuggets and stuff you'd like sift.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, the defense was really good today.
- 32:50[SPEAKER_02]: Well, does that mean the offense was bad?
- 32:51[SPEAKER_02]: So just being that all your defense is really good.
- 32:53[SPEAKER_02]: The question is, once they get out of camp to get to this Utah game, how good does this offense need to be?
- 32:59[SPEAKER_02]: Because I think that
- 33:01[SPEAKER_02]: going through the Riley era, everyone's expectations slash like it was just work.
- 33:07[SPEAKER_02]: Like you were treated to historic offenses.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_02]: You're just like, yeah, they should score a touchdown every drive.
- 33:11[SPEAKER_02]: That that's the bar.
- 33:12[SPEAKER_02]: How could is this unit actually need to be to get them not just back to the college football playoff, but take that next step and truly be in the mix pushing for an SEC title as opposed to like, well, they need seven teams in front of the lose even though they're in that group of two last teams.
- 33:27[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's something I actually talked to Bill Beanbow about last week and shifting the expectations of what offensive success is because a couple of things one, you know, this isn't the Lincoln Riley system and and they don't have the players.
- 33:46[SPEAKER_03]: of that level, on the offensive side, but to their point in the SEC and college football has changed so much and the expectation, the gauge of success changes so much.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_03]: This doesn't have to be a top 10 offense nationally.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_03]: They just have to be, if they can be good, if they can be good, if they can be good,
- 34:07[SPEAKER_03]: not not great.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_03]: Just good solid offensively.
- 34:12[SPEAKER_03]: I think that this team has a chance to do a lot of really special things because of how good their defense should be.
- 34:19[SPEAKER_03]: Now, you know, back, I thought last year they would take a little bit of a step back with some of the guys that they lost.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_03]: They didn't.
- 34:28[SPEAKER_03]: On paper that would be my same expectation a little bit, but that depth as I talked about earlier is something that you can develop as the year goes on and I think they've got a chance to be deep once again, but they don't have to go out there, you know, John material doesn't have to go out there and be baker may field and
- 34:51[SPEAKER_03]: You know, Tory Blaylock doesn't have to go out there and be Joe Nixon and, you know, Xavier Robinson doesn't have to be Somaje P-Rine.
- 34:58[SPEAKER_03]: And I say, Satan, you don't have to be CD glam.
- 35:03[SPEAKER_03]: They just have to be solid and be able to not turn the ball over to convert on third down and to at least have some semblance of a ground game to go with their passing game in order to, you know, be successful.
- 35:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Ray, Ray, Ray, I think you're spot on with all that.
- 35:24[SPEAKER_01]: Something to check along back in cheese, 2004, 2005 told me is that his history, you know, he's second in the high school trophy, he's a record set in quarterback at Iowa, he, and that he was offensive coordinator to owe you for a few years.
- 35:38[SPEAKER_01]: He said the quarterback really only needs to make about two or three plays per game.
- 35:45[SPEAKER_01]: Two or three plays per game.
- 35:47[SPEAKER_01]: if you're quarterback can do that and then follow the game plan the rest of the time okay something exceptional something where you look at your head coaches and given the eyes and say wow did you see that two or three times again you don't have to be brought far you don't have to be the most you know superman playing football so they need that out of john material and then we need to make sure that all this talk coming up uh... train camp
- 36:11[SPEAKER_01]: about the offensive line and the tight ends.
- 36:14[SPEAKER_01]: We need to make sure we're not being sold the bill of goods on those guys.
- 36:17[SPEAKER_01]: I want to see the Oklahoma offensive line and the Okey you tight ends perform at a high level over the course of a season 14 game season 15 game season, right?
- 36:27[SPEAKER_01]: If they do.
- 36:29[SPEAKER_01]: then this offense can be I think certainly upper third maybe upper quarter of the SEC and maybe top through it three or four you know we'll see but I think that's there probably they're ceiling maybe they don't have a ceiling but I think the best you could hope for is top third of the SEC offenses Oklahoma needs to be on that scale for this team to have a lot of postseason success
- 36:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I tend to agree with that.
- 36:55[SPEAKER_00]: Just looking at how many good teams they played this year, even if the defense is the same.
- 37:00[SPEAKER_00]: If the offense stays the same, that's probably not a recipe to make the college football play off.
- 37:05[SPEAKER_00]: So I think the Utah game more than anything, the big witness test is gonna be the running game, because I mean, you look at,
- 37:11[SPEAKER_00]: Last year's opener against Illinois State granted Illinois State a better team than you took more than likely you took arguably the worst FPS program they struggled to run against Illinois State though that gave us a pretty good picture of what the running game was going to be the most effective runs were from John Matier and obviously with his injury
- 37:31[SPEAKER_00]: how he was affected by that.
- 37:32[SPEAKER_00]: He's running game was used a less later in the year.
- 37:35[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean, that was discouraging.
- 37:38[SPEAKER_00]: I think that the running game needs to be shown in week one.
- 37:41[SPEAKER_00]: It needs to be a lot of different guys carrying it, having success on the ground.
- 37:45[SPEAKER_00]: If not, it's going to be tough for the offense to take too much of a big step.
- 37:49[SPEAKER_00]: forward.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_00]: And I mean, that sets up for a low scoring ugly.
- 37:53[SPEAKER_00]: They can still win it.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_00]: Not saying it's an automatic loss, but a week two game against Michigan that could be 10 to 7, 13 to 10.
- 38:01[SPEAKER_00]: Name your low score.
- 38:02[SPEAKER_00]: It could be really bad for the offense.
- 38:05[SPEAKER_00]: If obviously, they can't even run against a team like he used up.
- 38:12[SPEAKER_02]: And here's what I look at and as we move closer and closer to like the super conferences and all that stuff more mirroring the NFL I think it's something that a lot of people need a fellow really comfortable looking at which is what was your record in one score games a year ago if you're way out there on either end
- 38:33[SPEAKER_02]: That's usually a recipe to come back to the pack a little.
- 38:36[SPEAKER_02]: So like in the NFL, Kansas City last year, and this is an outlier for the home there, but that's used for terrible month score games.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_02]: And that's why I think a lot of people like, hey, Patrick with homes as long as he's healthy, that's probably not going to happen again.
- 38:48[SPEAKER_02]: You look at Oklahoma.
- 38:49[SPEAKER_02]: They were really good in one score games a year ago.
- 38:52[SPEAKER_02]: The Ole Miss Gaby and 8 point game, we're going to do it that as far as that goes.
- 38:55[SPEAKER_02]: But you look at the Auburn game, certainly Tennessee, Bama, that LSU
- 39:02[SPEAKER_02]: I don't begrudge anyone who just who just looks at that and says you're really good one score games a year ago This is where you can maybe come back to the middle of that.
- 39:09[SPEAKER_02]: That's where they'll you're playing with a quarter back that's injured and offense that went into kind of total mode down the stretch if your offense can just Take some natural progression some steps forward.
- 39:19[SPEAKER_02]: That's where you will hope that
- 39:21[SPEAKER_02]: your floor stays about the same and the biggest thing for me and I just keep going back to this that something I don't think we'll be able to know until probably leave the cotton bowl assuming health is the mechanic stuff's all well and good and it's important for John material but if the running game takes a big step forward if your offensive line is just giving you moments where you can breathe it opens things up town field
- 39:43[SPEAKER_02]: The biggest thing for me is, how does charm it's your balance?
- 39:47[SPEAKER_02]: I wanna be the playmaker.
- 39:49[SPEAKER_02]: I wanna have that little bit of gunslinger in you that allows you who've on the high end to make those plays like you're talking about.
- 39:56[SPEAKER_02]: That's where the plays that pop, but the out.
- 39:58[SPEAKER_02]: making the critical mistake on the back end where it goes, okay, well now suddenly it's mental airs and things like that because again, material is making mental errors before he was hurt then the issue game there were a couple of those.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just like, I think that was more of a mental error than like his hand or being able to grip the football and that it's so funny that we talk about everything else around John material.
- 40:18[SPEAKER_02]: I do think at the end of the day it's going to come back to your divins is going to give you a chance in all of these games.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_02]: Ryan can
- 40:28[SPEAKER_02]: Balance all of this perfectly and and just have a little bit more comfort because I think that's something we saw Dylan Gabriel get a lot better at and I have to go back to Dylan just because we're looking for guys that year one they say yeah I'm ready to be the core back local home, but then I think they realized this is a big deal and then going into year two and be a lot more comfortable I mentioned to see can you get that version of material and other different players that which is a lot more cool calm and comfortable and cool with being the spirit head of a massive organization which is a cool football.
- 40:57[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, they are different players, but a lot about their personalities are similar, you know, obviously, you know, Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray and that stretch of quarterbacks were just completely different type of people as much as anything, but you're right, John material, you know.
- 41:17[SPEAKER_03]: the disfaking has got to be there and and everything else is is great to talk about, but you know, when a one of those 300 pounders on the defensive line on the other side from Texas or Georgia or Michigan or whoever is right up in your face, can you make the decision like that?
- 41:36[SPEAKER_03]: to go to the right place and that's something that we didn't see him do a lot of last year.
- 41:41[SPEAKER_03]: In those critical situations, got away with some of them.
- 41:46[SPEAKER_03]: He's got to be better this year because it's going to be a lot less forgiving now in year two and with the schedule that they face and the
- 41:59[SPEAKER_03]: You know what's on the line all of that stuff is just gonna be magnified this year and that that's something I think we're not gonna get
- 42:09[SPEAKER_03]: a full answer, like you said, to probably leave in the cotton bowl, but, you know, certainly, to not till, you know, early in the season, because there's, there's another week and watch out there today, you know, when they're just, you know, wearing pads, but not doing a whole lot of really intense contact, you can't learn those things about a quarterback in those situations.
- 42:35[SPEAKER_03]: You've got to learn them in games.
- 42:37[SPEAKER_02]: And one thing too is I would assume that one of the good sides of playing a defense this good every day is in practice is that you'll she can a pretty quick gauge of what is this offense good at what is it not good at and the best teams grow throughout the year, but John I guess part of what's so tough about this offenses.
- 42:57[SPEAKER_02]: Can they afford a slow start?
- 42:59[SPEAKER_02]: I think you saw like the Michigan game a year ago.
- 43:01[SPEAKER_02]: They made a couple of big plays, but the defense dictated things there.
- 43:05[SPEAKER_02]: And it's a spot where with Georgia on the horizon and Texas, you know, beyond the biway gap to that.
- 43:11[SPEAKER_02]: It's like this group, can they do enough while if they have a slow start to get you through that stretch and you would hopefully go to them on in that stretch.
- 43:20[SPEAKER_02]: And then from there, they can expand and get better and better.
- 43:23[SPEAKER_02]: That's what makes this season so interesting
- 43:26[SPEAKER_02]: They might not have the time to grow that you're going to need to, especially as you bring in so many new pieces.
- 43:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you're right.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_01]: That's the thing about this schedule is it's so front-loaded, you've got to get out of the gate fast, you've got to be able to convert, you know, key third downs or plays in the fourth quarter, keep drives alive, keep the field go kicker on the sideline for a little bit longer, you know, you've got to wind that clock down and make sure that the team doesn't get an extra possession.
- 43:52[SPEAKER_01]: And by doing that, you've got to execute on third and third and three, you know,
- 44:02[SPEAKER_01]: season the year before but they were good enough to get to the playoff right so now the the standard has changed for me the goal the goal has shifted and that is don't just be 10 and 2 and get to the playoff this team with this defense and this head coach and the GM that they put all the all the things they put together this team has the potential in and here's something else they've got and maybe this is good maybe this is bad
- 44:30[SPEAKER_01]: They've got a lot of national buzz right now a lot of the national voices who cover college football are saying you know that we we need to look a little closer at Oklahoma Oklahoma's got a lot of this and the Oklahoma's got some of that so there's this momentum this national narrative whatever it is that suggests that Oklahoma could have a special season
- 44:50[SPEAKER_01]: It hits right now.
- 44:51[SPEAKER_01]: For me, my money, it's all on the offense.
- 44:53[SPEAKER_01]: Offensive line has got to be good.
- 44:55[SPEAKER_01]: Those tight ends have to make big plays when they come to them.
- 44:58[SPEAKER_01]: The wider severs, same thing.
- 44:59[SPEAKER_01]: Be consistent.
- 45:01[SPEAKER_01]: Don't chop off sides.
- 45:03[SPEAKER_01]: You know, don't fall start.
- 45:05[SPEAKER_01]: Don't drop eat third down passes.
- 45:08[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 45:09[SPEAKER_01]: And then they're running backs.
- 45:10[SPEAKER_01]: Just follow the holes.
- 45:11[SPEAKER_01]: If the offensive line is doing their job.
- 45:14[SPEAKER_01]: running back should have no excuses, they should have a decent to very good running game.
- 45:19[SPEAKER_01]: Put all those things together and yeah, 2026 could be a special season for you.
- 45:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I tend to agree with that.
- 45:26[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, if this offense is even possible, I think this team is very good chance of making it back to the playoffs.
- 45:33[SPEAKER_00]: They don't have to kind of that the aimers point.
- 45:35[SPEAKER_00]: They don't have to be world-beeners.
- 45:37[SPEAKER_00]: They don't have to be these high-flying Kyler-Marie Baker may field lead offenses.
- 45:41[SPEAKER_00]: They just have to be serviceable.
- 45:42[SPEAKER_00]: They have to average more points than they did last year and they have to run a whole heck of a lot better than they did last year too.
- 45:48[SPEAKER_00]: I think the first stretch is massive, especially you look at the Georgia and Texas games.
- 45:53[SPEAKER_00]: But have a lot more established offenses than say a Michigan at this point, that's a team with a new coach.
- 46:00[SPEAKER_00]: Bryce Underwood definitely has high potential.
- 46:02[SPEAKER_00]: He still looks very inconsistent and dig through out his first year in Ann Arbor.
- 46:07[SPEAKER_00]: So that game.
- 46:09[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe that is a game that the defense kind of can carry you, but you can't lean on that too far down in the line with Georgia, which has for the last several years, been the most complete, well offensively, and defensively, and the league.
- 46:21[SPEAKER_00]: Texas, even if Archmanting, isn't worthy of all of this pre-season highs been frontrunner, all of that stuff, still a good quarterback with tons of weapons at his disposal.
- 46:30[SPEAKER_00]: The defense can only do so much, obviously they can hold teams to low scores,
- 46:35[SPEAKER_00]: But in those kind of games, they're going to have to score a lot more points than they would have last year, obviously, only six points in the Texas game last year.
- 46:44[SPEAKER_00]: So they have to be better and they have to get better fairly quickly.
- 46:47[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it's like if there are still glitches in the first one through three weeks of the season.
- 46:52[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think it's doomsday, but it's got to get pretty good, pretty quickly for this team.
- 46:57[SPEAKER_00]: So make it through Fairly, at least fairly have an alarm through those first five games.
- 47:03[SPEAKER_02]: And part of what you hope with all of that is that right, for you talked about, right, that the guys that you're bringing back on the offensive line, the young guys stepping up, their ones that have been through Nealand and Bryant, Denny and understand what it means to play in those big games.
- 47:16[SPEAKER_02]: Jake Michael back again, has not a young guy, but his first year, you see he did all that in the area on here.
- 47:22[SPEAKER_02]: It's a guy that, that's a guy that,
- 47:24[SPEAKER_02]: Arkansas offensive he's been through all these venues.
- 47:26[SPEAKER_02]: He know what he knows what it looks like.
- 47:28[SPEAKER_02]: There shouldn't be a learning curve as far as the competition across from it.
- 47:31[SPEAKER_02]: It'll just be yelling together and getting going as a team.
- 47:34[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm excited to see what that thing looks like.
- 47:37[SPEAKER_02]: Carson, you mentioned Bryce Sunderwood.
- 47:38[SPEAKER_02]: Bryce Sunderwood kind of winning hand.
- 47:40[SPEAKER_02]: They've been dragged into the war of words that happens with the game of North Ryan Parker Livingston.
- 47:47[SPEAKER_02]: He's got a future in diplomacy if he wants it.
- 47:50[SPEAKER_02]: We would be remiss if we didn't
- 47:53[SPEAKER_02]: Touch on the fact that he was offered the opportunity to address, respond to anything Steve Sarkese.
- 48:00[SPEAKER_02]: We talked about the Sark comments coming out of SECBD a day, shocker, head coach at Texas would like to beat Oklahoma, regardless of if former players are on the Oklahoma roster.
- 48:09[SPEAKER_02]: But I do appreciate that Parker's been through this a couple of times, it did not was not overly concerned with taking any of the cap dip that's out there with Sark.
- 48:20[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, no doubt about it.
- 48:21[SPEAKER_03]: And, hey, I said this on our, you know, wrap up video yesterday.
- 48:28[SPEAKER_03]: Sark, that's what you want your coach to say if you're a Texas fan, just like you would want preventables to say that about somebody going to Texas.
- 48:37[SPEAKER_03]: So I get that, you know, it made some fun headlines and gave us something to talk about for a little bit.
- 48:45[SPEAKER_03]: But Parker Livingstone handled it the way that he should.
- 48:49[SPEAKER_03]: which is, hey, we've got more important things to do.
- 48:55[SPEAKER_03]: You know, what do you say there's, you know, four, four games to go before that.
- 49:00[SPEAKER_03]: You've got to worry about, although I don't know how much they're paying attention to the U-tip because we've heard the Michigan fight song yesterday at practice, but
- 49:11[SPEAKER_03]: Parker is so no doubt will be juiced for that game in the cotton ball, but he's not letting it take over right now, he'll at least wait till October to let that show.
- 49:22[SPEAKER_01]: Just just to ask me in the middle of trying to camp right now too busy to think about Texas, ask me again in October because I'll have plenty to say that would be fun.
- 49:32[SPEAKER_02]: I think he was like, can I just get through a scrimmage for him?
- 49:34[SPEAKER_02]: Can we get through a fall camp scrimmage?
- 49:35[SPEAKER_02]: I'd already camp scrimmage.
- 49:37[SPEAKER_02]: Is there any possibility that Brett Venables is not disrespecting you tap and he's just like, hell, the victors is one of our college football bangers and if I have an excuse to play, I'm going to play.
- 49:45[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I mean, I mean, we might miss where you guys must miss when they play the you tap fights on.
- 49:51[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, you got, hey, here's the real question.
- 49:55[SPEAKER_02]: If we're given a bunch of college football fight songs together, is there any shot Carson that you could pick you tips fight song out of a bag?
- 50:07[SPEAKER_02]: Cause I would not get close.
- 50:09[SPEAKER_00]: zero chance that are very few that I can pick out of a bag obviously owe you being one of them.
- 50:14[SPEAKER_00]: I'm an Arizona state alum.
- 50:15[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sure I could pick that one out of a bag.
- 50:18[SPEAKER_00]: So certainly not UTEPs.
- 50:20[SPEAKER_00]: But Michigan's it is in your room.
- 50:22[SPEAKER_00]: It's catchy.
- 50:23[SPEAKER_00]: Love or hate the Wolverines.
- 50:24[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to know that instantly knew what they were doing yesterday as we were told to be back this.
- 50:29[SPEAKER_00]: So kind of cool thing there.
- 50:31[SPEAKER_01]: UTEPs has got to be a callback to Marty Robbins in the West Texas town of El Paso.
- 50:41[SPEAKER_03]: Hey, there's a shame if that's not their fight side.
- 50:44[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you, Roland, what we're gifted, we're blessed that between, I think that some of the fight song wars that happen, OU Texas is always just two iconic ones.
- 50:55[SPEAKER_02]: You get A&M back on the schedule.
- 50:56[SPEAKER_02]: Those are ones that you can always pick A&M's band out, Florida, I think, Bama, Georgia is easy to pick out.
- 51:03[SPEAKER_02]: I think for the most part.
- 51:03[SPEAKER_02]: So we don't have to stray too far off the beat at the end of the Saturday.
- 51:06[SPEAKER_03]: And my, my Michigan and Notre Dame are on different levels.
- 51:11[SPEAKER_03]: for everybody else.
- 51:13[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, those are up.
- 51:14[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just trying to think of a non-SCC division those two obviously, USC is always in the mix there.
- 51:21[SPEAKER_02]: Of course, is that where you're going?
- 51:22[SPEAKER_02]: Because they just play the whole tie.
- 51:24[SPEAKER_02]: I appreciate that USC is just like, we can get a Grammy, we can get on a soundtrack to like win a Grammy, but also we're just going to play our traditional like battle hymns the whole time.
- 51:34[SPEAKER_00]: I throw UCLA in the mix to both of the LA schools have excellent ones, shout out to the little brother.
- 51:39[SPEAKER_00]: He picked a school that has a really good fight song, so props to him.
- 51:42[SPEAKER_01]: Also, you guys can't understand Wisconsin.
- 51:45[SPEAKER_01]: If you look at high school football, high school football marching bands, I think every name around the country might be number one.
- 51:52[SPEAKER_01]: I think on Wisconsin we'll do number two.
- 51:55[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, there were when I was over in Eastern Oklahoma, the Mescogia area.
- 51:59[SPEAKER_03]: There were a lot of schools using on Wisconsin.
- 52:05[SPEAKER_02]: can't, can't deny it, can't deny it as far as that goes.
- 52:07[SPEAKER_02]: All right, we've got to do the fights on course of the offseason.
- 52:10[SPEAKER_02]: We're going to do a real quick, just periodic update into the cause of all playoff.
- 52:14[SPEAKER_02]: This did come on Monday.
- 52:15[SPEAKER_02]: It was quickly pupued, but just not what happened.
- 52:18[SPEAKER_02]: Ross Downger was reporting.
- 52:19[SPEAKER_02]: I appreciate the verbiage on this.
- 52:21[SPEAKER_02]: ESPN is, quote, socializing.
- 52:24[SPEAKER_02]: a new model because the SEC stuck on 16, the big tin stuck on 24, they socialize like it's a pup, I guess.
- 52:31[SPEAKER_02]: That we could do a 16 team playoff and put do four play in game or add a couple of play in games to get into the 16, which would technically come through a 20 team playoff, rosted the rounds, and yes, he was like, nah, we don't like that.
- 52:45[SPEAKER_02]: It sounds like the big tin also said
- 52:51[SPEAKER_02]: Here's the thing.
- 52:52[SPEAKER_02]: I think we're to the point of like send me the email and something gets done as far as that goes.
- 52:57[SPEAKER_02]: But it is kind of insane guys that we are this far into technically the contract being up.
- 53:04[SPEAKER_02]: And I know that Greg said you told us multiple times if we all say no, it just defaults to like a one year renewal of the 12 team.
- 53:09[SPEAKER_02]: I do think it's crazy that it's August 12 and we're still just like, there is no movement.
- 53:14[SPEAKER_02]: I kind of thought those are going to get done in the spring, but I guess that's just where we are in college sports guys.
- 53:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's socializing different from workshopping.
- 53:25[SPEAKER_01]: I think so.
- 53:26[SPEAKER_01]: Pretty much the same things.
- 53:28[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think when you socialize, you find a neutral dog park that no dog claims ownership to, whereas if you workshop, you're probably sending off totally to a different place where someone else is calling it.
- 53:41[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, okay.
- 53:43[SPEAKER_01]: We're the focus groups.
- 53:45[SPEAKER_03]: We're the focus groups fit into all of this.
- 53:50[SPEAKER_02]: You guys don't want to know about focus groups.
- 53:52[SPEAKER_02]: That it, focus groups is what's happening in the house and the Senate where shocker to everyone, the conference has finally got behind one of the acts.
- 54:00[SPEAKER_02]: And this is going to just hold onto your seats.
- 54:04[SPEAKER_02]: They had to push it back because they can't get everybody on board.
- 54:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they sent it to Congress and nothing got done.
- 54:09[SPEAKER_01]: What a shocker.
- 54:10[SPEAKER_02]: Stop, I just didn't shot.
- 54:13[SPEAKER_02]: So we'll keep continue to wait.
- 54:15[SPEAKER_02]: Here's the real thing.
- 54:16[SPEAKER_02]: Do we get a version of whatever the protect college sports or a new version or an old version?
- 54:22[SPEAKER_02]: Do we get that or an actual agreement on like a multi-year playoff extension that's not just I'll just run it back for another.
- 54:30[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know which one we get first, but it seems like we're not close on either front.
- 54:36[SPEAKER_01]: Probably whatever ESPN wants.
- 54:39[SPEAKER_02]: probably indeed, which is a comfy spot.
- 54:42[SPEAKER_02]: Well, ESPN, they want to get the Tulsa little league controversy way the heck off to the side so they get to Williamsport, who were watching you, that the softball and the baseball team when both halves of the organization are in legal hot water.
- 54:58[SPEAKER_02]: This is why they didn't put Oklahoma on the front of the Thunder Jersey, so they put Oklahoma City.
- 55:02[SPEAKER_02]: So they're like, we have to do the paperwork correctly to make all this happen.
- 55:07[SPEAKER_02]: Garcin, you're not even, that was a big fight.
- 55:09[SPEAKER_02]: A long, long time ago of that.
- 55:12[SPEAKER_02]: That's why the Tulsa Precies and Game happens because existence, yeah, I don't know if that was bad.
- 55:18[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that was a whole thing.
- 55:19[SPEAKER_02]: We can get into the, that's for next off season.
- 55:22[SPEAKER_02]: We'll put that on the off season time capsule and get that going.
- 55:26[SPEAKER_02]: All right, here's our schedule for the rest of the league.
- 55:27[SPEAKER_02]: We're supposed to talk to Brett Venables, following practice on Friday, not currently scheduled to view practice between now
- 55:37[SPEAKER_02]: done with that.
- 55:37[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe one more usually you get pads on, but then after that, it just kind of gets into post-practice stuff.
- 55:42[SPEAKER_02]: So be sure if you want to see any of our practice highlights, both those videos are up on who's YouTube page, John Hoover, Media is going to YouTube, John Hoover Media.
