Latest / Halo Territory: A Los Angeles Angels Podcast / RED SOCKED: Angels suffer second straight series sweep and now have MLB's worst record at 36-55
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Well, Hey Angel fans, and welcome back to Halo territory.
- 0:12Speaker 2: I and Mike D.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Giovanna, former La Times Baseball writer and host of the show,
- 0:16Speaker 1: joined by my regular co host Mark Trumbull, the former
- 0:18Speaker 1: Angel slugger. Well, there's another rough series for the Angels.
- 0:22Speaker 1: They were swept by the Boston Red Sox. They have
- 0:26Speaker 1: now lost six games in a row as we tape
- 0:29Speaker 1: here on Monday morning, twelve of the last nineteen since
- 0:32Speaker 1: June fourteenth, and they have fallen to a major league
- 0:35Speaker 1: worst thirty six and fifty five and eleven games back
- 0:39Speaker 1: of the Seattle Mariners in the American League West. They've
- 0:43Speaker 1: scored thirteen runs in their last nine games. Mark, We've
- 0:48Speaker 1: seen this before and all too often in Anaheim. Is
- 0:52Speaker 1: this the start of the Halo's annual summer swoon?
- 0:58Speaker 2: No way, Oh, I can't can't be Uh, I don't know.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Do you know?
- 1:03Speaker 3: I know?
- 1:04Speaker 2: This isn't they were on this team is? It's hard
- 1:08Speaker 2: to predict. I'm waiting for one of these goofy Angel
- 1:12Speaker 2: games where they score a ton of runs out of
- 1:14Speaker 2: nowhere against a good starting pitcher. But that really hasn't
- 1:18Speaker 2: happened as much recently. They were lighting up the world
- 1:24Speaker 2: a week ago and now it's cold as ice. They
- 1:27Speaker 2: got a couple of guys, uh, you know, Grissom and
- 1:30Speaker 2: Parazza last thirty games. Don't don't don't look if you're
- 1:36Speaker 2: you know, into the number is two o six for
- 1:38Speaker 2: Grissom and two oh four for Parazza. Not getting on base,
- 1:42Speaker 2: not slugging. So uh, two guys that were pretty integral
- 1:47Speaker 2: to the success earlier have gone cold, and uh, there's
- 1:51Speaker 2: not enough other guys to pick up the slacks. So
- 1:53Speaker 2: the offense is really scuffled. And the starting pitching against
- 1:56Speaker 2: the Red Sox was was not great.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you mentioned those two guys, and it's interesting
- 2:01Speaker 1: they got shut down by the Red Sox. Lefty Friday
- 2:04Speaker 1: Night didn't look like his stuff was all that great.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Rangers for his starts, and he does come out because
- 2:09Speaker 1: of an injury on Sunday night in the third inning,
- 2:13Speaker 1: but it really puts a ding in your lineup. They've
- 2:16Speaker 1: been pretty adamant about sticking to this platoon thing with
- 2:20Speaker 1: you know, Walton and Meckler usually starting against righty's and
- 2:24Speaker 1: Parazza and Grissom against lefties. But at Parazza and Grissom
- 2:27Speaker 1: aren't hitting. Ooh, that really takes the sting and the
- 2:31Speaker 1: bite out of your offense against right hand left handed pitching. Now,
- 2:36Speaker 1: one guy who certainly can help against left handers is
- 2:39Speaker 1: a young man named Mike Trout, who is scheduled to
- 2:42Speaker 1: return from a I believes a right hand string string
- 2:46Speaker 1: uh for Tuesday series opener in Texas. Grayson Rodrie, as
- 2:51Speaker 1: the pitcher the Angels acquired from the Baltimore Orioles over
- 2:54Speaker 1: the winter's supposed to be a real integral part of
- 2:57Speaker 1: this rotation, has not happened yet. He supposed to return
- 3:00Speaker 1: from a back injury to start Friday series opener at Minnesota.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Mark of these two guys enough to maybe it's not
- 3:09Speaker 1: turned things around, maybe at least stop the bleeding.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Who says they're bleeding, it's not. I mean, it's it's
- 3:17Speaker 2: really not out of characters for the seasons as a whole.
- 3:21Speaker 2: It's just you know, cold streak. But I think that
- 3:24Speaker 2: there are two very quality players. One's a Hall of
- 3:27Speaker 2: Famer in waiting and one could be an excellent starting
- 3:33Speaker 2: pitcher that has had, you know that the health issues
- 3:37Speaker 2: and some inconsistencies, but the stuff has looked good. I
- 3:40Speaker 2: think that it's uh, you know, I'd be happy to
- 3:42Speaker 2: have those two back. But the question for you is
- 3:45Speaker 2: who's gonna provide protection for Trout in that lineup?
- 3:49Speaker 1: Hmm, well, I think it's strange. I was. I was
- 3:55Speaker 1: at the last two games, and it seems like the
- 3:59Speaker 1: guy who netto has gotten a little better offensively. I'm
- 4:03Speaker 1: not saying he's the guy who's gonna protect him, but
- 4:06Speaker 1: the guy who has probably delivered the most quality at
- 4:10Speaker 1: bats per capita at bat is Donovan Walton. It's like,
- 4:15Speaker 1: you know, he came off the bench hit at an
- 4:17Speaker 1: RBI double last night. I think he had a hit
- 4:20Speaker 1: off the nice hit the you know, Saturday night. It
- 4:25Speaker 1: just seems like he's putting really good quality at bats together.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Now.
- 4:28Speaker 1: I think if you're facing a lefty, you got your
- 4:31Speaker 1: probably your best option is Hojre Solaire, maybe Joe Adell
- 4:37Speaker 1: in the three spot and Solaire fourth Against alrighty, I
- 4:41Speaker 1: think you're gonna stick with Nolan shan Well and that
- 4:44Speaker 1: three spot like they were most of the season. I
- 4:46Speaker 1: don't know what other options they have.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Really.
- 4:50Speaker 1: When Perazza was hitting, when Grissom was hitting, I think
- 4:54Speaker 1: those two guys were decent options in the three or
- 4:58Speaker 1: in the middle of order spots. I don't know. I'm stumped.
- 5:02Speaker 1: I don't envy Kurt does the Zuki's job, you know,
- 5:06Speaker 1: filling out that lineup on a nightly basis, when your
- 5:08Speaker 1: options are so.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Limited, it is, it is tough. I don't know. Joey
- 5:14Speaker 2: Dell is an interesting one. I mean, it seems like
- 5:17Speaker 2: it gets three hits fairly often, yet the numbers really
- 5:21Speaker 2: don't move. The ops south of seven hundred still expanding
- 5:26Speaker 2: the zone a bit too much, well amongst others, but
- 5:31Speaker 2: it's odd. It just seems like he's getting I mean,
- 5:35Speaker 2: there's enough production to but I guess there Gooby had
- 5:38Speaker 2: mentioned on the telecast a lot of singles, so the
- 5:42Speaker 2: extra base hits haven't been there. The Slugan is going
- 5:45Speaker 2: to be down on base percentage has never been a
- 5:47Speaker 2: strength of his, so that's terribly surprising. But I guess
- 5:53Speaker 2: this is a guy that really relies heavily on the
- 5:56Speaker 2: power side the production. He is hitting the ball hard,
- 5:59Speaker 2: he's finding hit good pieces of hitting, but you know,
- 6:03Speaker 2: to get that ops into that range that you'd like
- 6:06Speaker 2: to see it, he's got a you know, it's the
- 6:08Speaker 2: opposite of a lot of the early approach. I don't
- 6:11Speaker 2: really know, because he's a better overall hitter. I think
- 6:13Speaker 2: he just isn't driving the ball like he did last year. Yeah,
- 6:15Speaker 2: I totally agree. It's Joe's a strange one for me.
- 6:18Speaker 2: This year.
- 6:19Speaker 1: He's hit a couple of homers and you think, oh,
- 6:21Speaker 1: here comes that power surge we saw last year, and
- 6:24Speaker 1: it just hasn't materialized. But then you know, you'll see
- 6:27Speaker 1: a nice line drive hit to right field, maybe a
- 6:30Speaker 1: double to the gap in right center, you know, one
- 6:34Speaker 1: hundred and ten off the bat to left field, maybe
- 6:37Speaker 1: a four hundred and thirty foot home run. But I
- 6:40Speaker 1: just think the consistency hasn't been there. The reasons for that,
- 6:44Speaker 1: I am not an expert. I just know he's much
- 6:47Speaker 1: more capable of he's more capable of capable of delivering
- 6:51Speaker 1: a much much more offensively then he has been this
- 6:54Speaker 1: season so far. And you know, we'll get into this
- 6:57Speaker 1: little later, but you have to wonder how that would
- 7:00Speaker 1: packed his value at the trade bedline. That's gonna be
- 7:03Speaker 1: a tough read for other teams to make as we
- 7:07Speaker 1: approach that. Let's dig into a little more of this
- 7:10Speaker 1: Red Sox series. The Angels really had no answer for
- 7:13Speaker 1: Wilson Contreras, the Red Sox first baseman who had a
- 7:17Speaker 1: three run homer off Sam Altegary in the first inning
- 7:21Speaker 1: of Saturday Nights eight one win and another three run shot,
- 7:25Speaker 1: this one traveled four hundred and forty six feet to
- 7:28Speaker 1: left center off Ryan Johnson in the third inning of
- 7:31Speaker 1: Sunday Night seven to five win. Mark with the Angels
- 7:35Speaker 1: playing with fire, pitching so aggressively to this guy.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Nine oh ps, not an all star. That's probably gonna change.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Glad Blady Girge has already dropped out of the game.
- 7:50Speaker 2: I'd be stunned if I know it's Kurtz and Rice
- 7:53Speaker 2: right now. But man Contreras looked the part. There was
- 7:59Speaker 2: a base open at one point. I don't know. I
- 8:02Speaker 2: think it was last night's game. Yeah, maybe the Angels
- 8:07Speaker 2: were trailing by three runs or so. And I said, well,
- 8:10Speaker 2: I assume you're just gonna walk it. I mean, you've
- 8:14Speaker 2: already learned the hard way twice and those were not cheapies.
- 8:18Speaker 2: I mean, but that's what it looks like to be.
- 8:21Speaker 2: When people say hitterish, it's a definition of it. If
- 8:24Speaker 2: you watch the way he took his bats this weekend.
- 8:27Speaker 2: He was all over everything. The timing was there, he
- 8:29Speaker 2: didn't look fooled at all, and if you made a mistake,
- 8:32Speaker 2: he absolutely punished it. This Red Sox team, I previewed
- 8:36Speaker 2: them briefly before the series, just kind of a throwaway
- 8:40Speaker 2: that they hadn't been a good team offensively this season.
- 8:44Speaker 2: They you know, last place in their division, and overall
- 8:48Speaker 2: I hadn't. I hadn't seen them with my own eyes,
- 8:50Speaker 2: though covering the Angels, you hadn't seen the Red Sox yet.
- 8:53Speaker 2: That team, How they're in last place is a mystery,
- 8:57Speaker 2: because they played some nice baseball, They played nice defense.
- 9:00Speaker 2: They're starting pitching obviously was quite good. They were able
- 9:03Speaker 2: to pick up or Suarez had a short start due
- 9:06Speaker 2: to the injury. Their bullpland looked just okay, not great.
- 9:10Speaker 2: But the Angels were overmatched by a team that I
- 9:14Speaker 2: had pretty low expectations. But I think the Red Sox
- 9:17Speaker 2: have a lot more potential if they can keep anything
- 9:19Speaker 2: like this up.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Yeah, like most teams, they've had their share of injuries.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Patrick Sandovali, former Angel pitchers, on his way back making
- 9:26Speaker 1: some rehab starts. Rome and Anthony still on the Andrew
- 9:30Speaker 1: list for them, so you know, they may be a
- 9:32Speaker 1: team point that's heading in the right direction for some reason.
- 9:37Speaker 1: You know, the Angels seemed to be a magic lookxir
- 9:40Speaker 1: for some teams. That looks like the Mariners got right
- 9:43Speaker 1: after they swept the Angels last week. You know, Boston
- 9:45Speaker 1: has to go on to face the White Sox and
- 9:47Speaker 1: then there I think they finished their trip against the
- 9:49Speaker 1: Mets so and the White Sox are much improved. But
- 9:52Speaker 1: now the Red Sox seems to have turned things around
- 9:54Speaker 1: in Anaheim, so at least the Angels have that going
- 9:57Speaker 1: for him. Hey, we're going to take a quick break
- 9:59Speaker 1: for word from our sponsors and we'll be right back
- 10:01Speaker 1: with more Halo territory.

- 10:07Speaker 4: path to help your child succeed at home, looking to

- 10:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I did. I liked it a lot. All my
- 10:17Speaker 3: kids have done it before. It's an opportunity for them
- 10:21Speaker 3: to stay at home and enjoy school just as much.
- 10:24Speaker 3: They learn a lot, and this is an opportunity for
- 10:27Speaker 3: families that are on the go too as well. They
- 10:29Speaker 3: have to understand Listen, can't be at a regular school
- 10:32Speaker 3: at all times. I need my child to be doing this,
- 10:35Speaker 3: whether it's an athletic career, whatever stature they are at.
- 10:38Speaker 3: And we loved every second of it, and I think
- 10:41Speaker 3: it is an easy opportunity for some children.
- 10:43Speaker 4: K twelve offers tuition free, accredited online public education for
- 10:47Speaker 4: students in K through twelve, all in a setting that

- 11:02Speaker 4: K twelve dot com slash foal.
- 11:06Speaker 1: And welcome back to Halo territory with Mark Trumbull and
- 11:09Speaker 1: Mike D. Givanna. Now, the three runs he sock scored
- 11:12Speaker 1: on that Concurrasus home run Sunday night, we're all unearned
- 11:16Speaker 1: after zachno booted Wheelera bray U's routine grounder for his
- 11:20Speaker 1: major league leading fourteenth hour of the season. Now that
- 11:25Speaker 1: O had been, in my mind, playing a lot better
- 11:27Speaker 1: defensively over the last week or two, some really great
- 11:31Speaker 1: plays the routine plays are looking really solid. Was this
- 11:37Speaker 1: a momentary lapse on his part, Mark, or any reason
- 11:40Speaker 1: for concern when you saw that play?
- 11:45Speaker 2: Just a baseball play, I think he. I'd agree with
- 11:48Speaker 2: your comments that things happened in improving the routine plays
- 11:52Speaker 2: have been made with more consistency, and that's obviously a
- 11:57Speaker 2: good thing. So I think all things are headed in
- 12:00Speaker 2: the right direction. Interesting article by your former employer, the
- 12:05Speaker 2: La Times. I saw kind of a fun story on
- 12:08Speaker 2: the I guess the Pokemon and that seems to be
- 12:15Speaker 2: it's brought the team some luck. Multiple guys are into it, uh,
- 12:19Speaker 2: and kind of a fun piece there. If people didn't
- 12:22Speaker 2: catch that.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Yeah, let's just put it this way. Kind of a
- 12:25Speaker 1: fun piece is one way of looking at it. Mark,
- 12:28Speaker 1: And you're your glass is pretty half full today, So
- 12:32Speaker 1: good for you, Mark, good on. Good for you for
- 12:34Speaker 1: taking that really positive approach to that article. Well, you know,
- 12:40Speaker 1: the Times doesn't provide much changes coverage, so at least.
- 12:43Speaker 2: They that unfortunately used to get both papers growing up,
- 12:48Speaker 2: Register and the Times and look forward to the sports section. Yeah,
- 12:53Speaker 2: this isn't a documentary piece, but I guess that's just
- 12:58Speaker 2: kind of where we fill in. You could there's there's
- 13:00Speaker 2: if you want, you know, with that format used to
- 13:04Speaker 2: get a couple of different opinions. Now like on the broadcast, Uh,
- 13:07Speaker 2: yesterday showed a lot of the fans, the energetic fans
- 13:12Speaker 2: that uh, you know, the Tarpsoft crew, and I don't
- 13:15Speaker 2: think Peacock is restrained by any of it. I'm not
- 13:19Speaker 2: sure they exactly. I assumed they were hip to mostly
- 13:23Speaker 2: what was going on, but uh definitely gave them, you know,
- 13:27Speaker 2: more more notice and they didn't do the greatest job
- 13:30Speaker 2: drowning out the U audio. So that was there, and
- 13:34Speaker 2: it seems to be it's not going anywhere. I wonder
- 13:38Speaker 2: if the momentum is going to keep up or what.
- 13:41Speaker 2: But uh, it was a.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Little honestly, been surprised it's been sustained as long and
- 13:46Speaker 1: as forcefully as it has. You know, I was out
- 13:49Speaker 1: there Saturday and Sunday, and I get up to the
- 13:52Speaker 1: games regularly in my you know, uh, freelancing for AP
- 13:57Speaker 1: and every game, you know, you look up and and
- 14:00Speaker 1: you know those sections are empty. All of a sudden,
- 14:02Speaker 1: the last one in the upper deck is starting to
- 14:04Speaker 1: fill up, and you know, you look up five minutes
- 14:08Speaker 1: later and the word I use to describe it is.
- 14:11Speaker 1: The crowd is just metastasizing. It just grows and grows
- 14:15Speaker 1: and grows. And they've been nice where three sections have
- 14:17Speaker 1: been full of the tarpsoft crew and to sell the
- 14:21Speaker 1: team chance and the Yankees suck chance, which is interesting
- 14:25Speaker 1: to hear when the Yankees aren't in town and USA.
- 14:28Speaker 1: It's just a whole mix of chance. And you know
- 14:33Speaker 1: a lot of these guys are probably having a lot
- 14:36Speaker 1: of fun and probably an adult beverager three good on them.
- 14:39Speaker 1: But you know, the soul of the or the intent
- 14:44Speaker 1: and the thrust of the movement has really been able
- 14:47Speaker 1: to maintain itself. And that's you know, to sell the
- 14:49Speaker 1: team chance. Now all poking fun at my former employer's side.
- 14:55Speaker 1: They do still have a serious baseball right around staff
- 14:58Speaker 1: named Bill Shakan, who wrote a really good story in
- 15:00Speaker 1: Monday Morning's paper about John Mozeylock, the interim GM. We'll
- 15:05Speaker 1: talk a little bit about that either today or in
- 15:08Speaker 1: our next show. So they still do some good things,
- 15:14Speaker 1: and I don't know what to make of these fans.
- 15:16Speaker 1: You know, Artie's in one thing Shaken mentioned in that
- 15:20Speaker 1: in most conversations with Artie, selling a team has not
- 15:24Speaker 1: come up. He's most seems convinced that Artie is in
- 15:29Speaker 1: this for the long haul. So I don't know how
- 15:32Speaker 1: much longer this sell the team thing is gonna last,
- 15:36Speaker 1: But I don't know if it's putting a big dent
- 15:39Speaker 1: in Artie's plans as of now. And remember, he does
- 15:43Speaker 1: turn eighty years old this year. Interesting thing to watch,
- 15:47Speaker 1: but kudos to those fans for at least trying to
- 15:50Speaker 1: keep up the pressure. Let's talk a little bit more
- 15:53Speaker 1: about this SoC series. Mark, do you have any other
- 15:56Speaker 1: takeaways from this?
- 15:57Speaker 2: I wanted to ask you, Yeah, a question of what
- 16:00Speaker 2: do you see with the development of both Sam Aldergary
- 16:04Speaker 2: and Ryan Johnson at starting pitchers. Both these guys are
- 16:09Speaker 2: up and down. Johnson We've covered quite a bit Alde
- 16:13Speaker 2: Gary as well, giving them starts. The pitches great out poorly.
- 16:18Speaker 2: That's the only way to put it. Alde Gary the
- 16:22Speaker 2: other day, actually his curveball graded pretty well. Didn't use
- 16:26Speaker 2: it that much, wasn't pounding the strike zone. What he
- 16:29Speaker 2: does well is he gets soft contact what he's going well,
- 16:32Speaker 2: but too many free passes, too much nibbling. Johnson has
- 16:37Speaker 2: turned into kind of a Dan Herron, a poor man's
- 16:42Speaker 2: Dan Herronkomp, you know, throwing mainly just the cutter and
- 16:47Speaker 2: a split finger. The velocity that was mid nineties. We
- 16:52Speaker 2: talked a little bit about that. You know, he's more
- 16:55Speaker 2: of a ninety two when he throws a sinker, which
- 16:57Speaker 2: doesn't rate very well, actually not well at all, So
- 17:00Speaker 2: he's kind of gridlocked. And maybe it's just one bad inning.
- 17:04Speaker 2: You could kind of make that narrative, but I don't
- 17:07Speaker 2: know if either of these two guys. I think they
- 17:09Speaker 2: need to do, you know, something to further boost their development.
- 17:14Speaker 2: And both of them have huge differences on their release
- 17:17Speaker 2: points seven degrees, so alt gary on has change up
- 17:21Speaker 2: thirty seven degrees on his four team forty four, Johnson's
- 17:25Speaker 2: thirteen degrees on his split twenty on his cutter. So
- 17:28Speaker 2: that that arm difference and that the release point when
- 17:31Speaker 2: you see especially Alde Gary I think is tipping with
- 17:34Speaker 2: his glove as well to accommodate the changeup grip. And
- 17:37Speaker 2: I think Wayne might have even hinted on the broadcast
- 17:40Speaker 2: it looks like they knew what was coming, or canterraros
- 17:42Speaker 2: or whatever. That's what you're seeing. You're seeing a good
- 17:45Speaker 2: major league hitter that's picking up on something in real
- 17:48Speaker 2: time and seven degree arm difference that you know, it's
- 17:51Speaker 2: the release point you pick up on that. I've said
- 17:54Speaker 2: it before. Sonny Gray is an example. He's got seven
- 17:56Speaker 2: pitches or something and he is the it's on his
- 18:00Speaker 2: change up. I think he's over the top quite a bit,
- 18:02Speaker 2: which is counterintuitive, but it's his worst pitch statistically over
- 18:07Speaker 2: the years too. He doesn't use it that often, but
- 18:10Speaker 2: most of the really good pitchers you want to be
- 18:11Speaker 2: about two degrees difference. Seven is too big difference, and
- 18:15Speaker 2: I think that's partly or mainly why these guys are
- 18:19Speaker 2: not able to disguise their off speed pitches.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Yeah. I just think it's the Angels are in that
- 18:25Speaker 1: really uncomfortable position of having to use guys in the
- 18:27Speaker 1: big leagues who are not ready for the big leagues.
- 18:29Speaker 1: I think he could make that case with two of
- 18:31Speaker 1: the Both of those guys Aldo Gary walks are really
- 18:35Speaker 1: hurting him. I mean, he walked two guys ahead of
- 18:37Speaker 1: Contoursa's homer in the first inning Saturday night. You know,
- 18:42Speaker 1: you don't walk those guys. Maybe a limit the damage. Maybe,
- 18:44Speaker 1: you know, Contrarast is a little bit inevitable the way
- 18:47Speaker 1: he's hitting right now. Maybe that's a solo home runstead
- 18:50Speaker 1: of a three run shot and Ryan Johnson home man.
- 18:53Speaker 1: We we've talked about his development quote unquote, and the
- 19:00Speaker 1: actually with the plan with the sam Blum and I
- 19:03Speaker 1: just echo a lot of his thoughts is this kid's
- 19:06Speaker 1: been up and down, up and down. I just wish
- 19:08Speaker 1: to keep him in one place for more than a
- 19:11Speaker 1: couple of months, to let him get comfortable, let him
- 19:13Speaker 1: develop into the picture he's going to be, and they
- 19:15Speaker 1: have to figure out with him at some point if
- 19:18Speaker 1: he's going to be a starter or if he's going
- 19:20Speaker 1: to be a reliever. And I think the stuff we're
- 19:23Speaker 1: seeing from him right now is more an indication to
- 19:26Speaker 1: me that his future might be in the bullpen. What
- 19:29Speaker 1: do you think.
- 19:31Speaker 2: As a starter, he's kind of a junker, He's soft tossing,
- 19:38Speaker 2: relying a lot on chase. The stuff as it is,
- 19:42Speaker 2: it's going to be tough to get guys out in
- 19:44Speaker 2: the strike zone. I am one of the last people
- 19:48Speaker 2: that wants to talk about, you know, throwing harder, throwing harder,
- 19:52Speaker 2: But this is a candidate that you know, you get
- 19:55Speaker 2: the metrics, don't lie. Throwing harder is harder to hit.
- 20:00Speaker 2: And if he's gonna be a guy that's throwing low nineties.
- 20:02Speaker 2: It just with the lower arm slot. I still see
- 20:06Speaker 2: him as a seventh eighth inning guy coming in attacking. Yes,
- 20:11Speaker 2: he's gonna get the swing and miss. That's where you
- 20:12Speaker 2: want to chase more so than in a starting pitcher
- 20:16Speaker 2: relying on it. Because the teams, like you know, a
- 20:18Speaker 2: lot of the Yankees type teams, Dodgers, very selective. They're
- 20:21Speaker 2: gonna they're gonna lay off those pitches by that second
- 20:23Speaker 2: at bat. And these guys are not giving any length.
- 20:26Speaker 2: Uh So you have some of the bullpen arms that
- 20:28Speaker 2: are you know, having to go back to back, which yes,
- 20:31Speaker 2: they're able to go back to back. But like sil
- 20:35Speaker 2: Seth coming in the other night, maybe we'll get to
- 20:37Speaker 2: that later. But he had pitched the night before in
- 20:41Speaker 2: a game that wasn't particularly close out of probably necessity
- 20:44Speaker 2: with alde Gary going so short, and then kind of
- 20:48Speaker 2: got lit up yesterday. Didn't look too happy about it. Yeah.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Now it's time for daily Dingers, presented by FanDuel.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Mike Worse Gold is the angles offense. Can't buy one,
- 21:08Speaker 2: but this is the time. Who are you picking?
- 21:11Speaker 3: Uh?
- 21:12Speaker 1: You know, I don't think I'm going out on a
- 21:14Speaker 1: limb here, But Mike Trust supposed to come back from
- 21:17Speaker 1: a hamstring injury this week and be in the lineup
- 21:19Speaker 1: Tuesday for the series opener at Texas. He's always hit
- 21:25Speaker 1: very well in Texas, so Mike Trout is my daily
- 21:28Speaker 1: Dinger pick for Tuesday Night's game. Joining the action is easy.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Just make your free pick on who's hitting a home
- 21:36Speaker 1: run in their game, and if you're right, you'll get
- 21:38Speaker 1: a profit boost to use on your next bet for
- 21:40Speaker 1: a chance at extra winnings. It's just another reason why
- 21:44Speaker 1: FanDuel is the home of home runs. Head over to

- 22:16Speaker 5: Gambling problem call or text one eight hundred gambler.
- 22:21Speaker 1: And welcome back to Halo territory with Mark Trumplin, Mike d. Givannah. Yeah,
- 22:25Speaker 1: I was really surprised they brought still Step into that game.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Saturday night was an eight to one Red Sox eventual win.
- 22:35Speaker 1: I went back and looked it had been three days
- 22:37Speaker 1: since Chase pitching a game, and I know, for a
- 22:40Speaker 1: reliever who's used to pitching as much as he does,
- 22:44Speaker 1: that's a little bit of a on the long side
- 22:47Speaker 1: for a layoff. But to me, you know, he's one
- 22:51Speaker 1: of your top two, top three relievers right now, why
- 22:56Speaker 1: use him in that game if he really needs to,
- 22:58Speaker 1: you know, get some work in, do a little touchy
- 23:01Speaker 1: feel bullpen, you know, in the ninth thing, try to
- 23:04Speaker 1: get a feel for an amount. Don't overwork yourself so
- 23:06Speaker 1: you make yourself, you know, full strength and available for
- 23:09Speaker 1: the next day. You know, it's hard to judge everything
- 23:13Speaker 1: the Angels are doing because they're not in a pennant race,
- 23:15Speaker 1: you know, they're not there's no real long term plan like, oh,
- 23:19Speaker 1: we got to have this guy ready for October. That's
- 23:22Speaker 1: that's the huge difference. So like covering the Angels and
- 23:24Speaker 1: the Dodgers, everything is done within the context in la
- 23:28Speaker 1: of you know, how is this going to prepare us
- 23:30Speaker 1: for October? You don't have that situation Anaheim, so it
- 23:33Speaker 1: is different. But man, you know you got to you
- 23:35Speaker 1: got to ration your best relievers. In my mind, and
- 23:38Speaker 1: Chase Silseth should not have been in that game.
- 23:43Speaker 2: He was, you know they called down. Yeah, he was
- 23:46Speaker 2: the guy that he's been putting a tough situation this year. Yes,
- 23:49Speaker 2: he's allowed the most inherited runners, but he's also been
- 23:52Speaker 2: out there all the time. He's the go to guy.
- 23:55Speaker 2: He's basically the toughest part of the order. Generally Bachmann
- 23:58Speaker 2: is now too, but it hasn't been an easy road
- 24:03Speaker 2: for him this year. They're not giving him, you know,
- 24:05Speaker 2: these outings that are against the bottom of part of
- 24:09Speaker 2: the order and et cetera. He's he's having to go
- 24:12Speaker 2: get it. He's done a great job in my opinion,
- 24:15Speaker 2: as a guy that's you know, still somewhat new to relieving.
- 24:18Speaker 1: In that role.
- 24:19Speaker 2: And they're going to be you know, on the tarra
- 24:21Speaker 2: had A had A had a poor outing. Uh, it's
- 24:24Speaker 2: gonna happen. It was bound to happen. You learned from it,
- 24:28Speaker 2: You move on. I mean, it's not that big a deal.
- 24:32Speaker 2: What do you think you know, Yates, are you finally
- 24:34Speaker 2: coming around to the idea he's throwing the ball a
- 24:36Speaker 2: little better? Well, he seemed like you were convinced when
- 24:39Speaker 2: I brought up the stats against righties.
- 24:41Speaker 1: But yeah, well he seems to be in every game
- 24:43Speaker 1: where there's a plus or minus five. Now I'm not
- 24:47Speaker 1: sure if he's ever gonna pitch in a high leverage
- 24:48Speaker 1: situation again. Uh, the Angels have to close. Oh, I
- 24:54Speaker 1: don't think so. I don't think so, Mark, Am I
- 24:59Speaker 1: coming aroun? Yeah? You look better, but he has He
- 25:02Speaker 1: has not pitching many high leverage situations lately. So I
- 25:05Speaker 1: don't know what to make of it. Let's see him,
- 25:06Speaker 1: you know, close, Let's see him not two or three
- 25:10Speaker 1: saves in a row, and then I'll make my decisions.
- 25:13Speaker 1: So close the show by talking about you know this
- 25:18Speaker 1: this time of year, things happen and teams, you know,
- 25:22Speaker 1: especially I'm not so much teams with people in the
- 25:24Speaker 1: media like, oh my god, now there they were buyers.
- 25:28Speaker 1: Now they're sellers. They're sellers, now they're buyers. You know,
- 25:30Speaker 1: A three game winning streak this time of year, or
- 25:32Speaker 1: losing streak this time of year can really alter things.
- 25:36Speaker 1: We're still a little less than a month away from
- 25:38Speaker 1: the deadline, but the Angels lost six in a row.
- 25:40Speaker 1: They've fallen way back in the West. They have the
- 25:43Speaker 1: worst record in the league. Do the events of this
- 25:46Speaker 1: past week alter what the Angels should do with the
- 25:48Speaker 1: trade deadline in your mind? Or is it just confirm
- 25:51Speaker 1: what you already feel like they should do.
- 25:54Speaker 2: I don't know what's changed.
- 25:58Speaker 5: It.
- 26:00Speaker 2: I don't know what they're gonna do, is my I
- 26:03Speaker 2: I'm interested as everyone else is, and certainly we're not
- 26:08Speaker 2: gonna get any leaks as to what Moe's plan is.
- 26:12Speaker 2: Mostly like, we can speculating stuff, but a guy like that,
- 26:17Speaker 2: and the last thing you want is is things, you know,
- 26:21Speaker 2: some leaky sieve and rumors and nonsense. So whatever the
- 26:24Speaker 2: plan is, he's going to keep it. He's doing a
- 26:27Speaker 2: great job following off some tough questions when asked about
- 26:32Speaker 2: what yeah, I mean. But he's honest too, He's not
- 26:34Speaker 2: he's not giving those answers that when you know, you
- 26:38Speaker 2: read them and you think, wow, this guy has a
- 26:40Speaker 2: disdain for either the fans or the media. Whatever he's
- 26:44Speaker 2: he's doing the best he can to give, you know,
- 26:46Speaker 2: honest answers. And yes, they're coming up with a plan
- 26:49Speaker 2: and it's going to have to appease both sides. The
- 26:52Speaker 2: owner who's the one that's paying for things. And I think,
- 26:56Speaker 2: uh Mo, doesn't you know we've talked about he really
- 27:01Speaker 2: he doesn't care about getting fired tomorrow. He wouldn't change
- 27:06Speaker 2: his career one bit. But he is here to help.
- 27:10Speaker 2: He's identified that this is a franchise that is not
- 27:13Speaker 2: hitited in the right direction, hasn't been for a while.
- 27:15Speaker 2: I think there was a fan with an interesting sign
- 27:20Speaker 2: saying that Seam has been rebuilding for a while. I
- 27:24Speaker 2: don't know if you have that or not, but.
- 27:26Speaker 1: Well, I wasn't going to close the show with it,
- 27:28Speaker 1: but since you mentioned it, I have to give props
- 27:31Speaker 1: in a shout out to this fan. So let me
- 27:33Speaker 1: set up a situation. I was actually watching the game
- 27:35Speaker 1: Friday night on TV. It's the eighth inning. I think
- 27:38Speaker 1: it's a pretty lopsided Red so I forget to score
- 27:42Speaker 1: whatever the Red Sox are winning. Big Jose Siri hits
- 27:45Speaker 1: a home run the right center field and the TV
- 27:48Speaker 1: pans to the gap above the wall, and this is
- 27:52Speaker 1: what we see on our telecast, so you can see
- 27:56Speaker 1: there's a fan on the right, he's got his hand.
- 27:58Speaker 1: I don't know if he made the catch or not,
- 28:00Speaker 1: but this fan's holding a sign rebuilding since twenty ten.
- 28:05Speaker 1: And you can tell he was determined to get this
- 28:07Speaker 1: sign on TV because as the ball, as the flight
- 28:10Speaker 1: of the ball is heading what must have been very
- 28:13Speaker 1: close to him, he just holds a sign right in
- 28:16Speaker 1: front of his face with no fear while the fans
- 28:19Speaker 1: nearby are scrambling for the home run ball. And I
- 28:24Speaker 1: just have to give this fan props for his persistence.
- 28:29Speaker 1: What would you what would you? How would you describe
- 28:32Speaker 1: this fan? Mark? And did you notice that when you
- 28:34Speaker 1: were watching?
- 28:36Speaker 2: Committed? Very committed. I don't know where they got the
- 28:40Speaker 2: year from. There's probably some you know fact, you know, like.
- 28:47Speaker 1: Twenty sixteen, more like twenty sixteen.
- 28:49Speaker 2: You know they did win a Yeah, well, okay, so
- 28:51Speaker 2: two thousand and nine with the you know, the playoff run,
- 28:54Speaker 2: A very good team, very competitive team. I'd like to
- 28:57Speaker 2: think that the teams I was on with, you know,
- 29:00Speaker 2: I don't know, it's very tough because sometimes you don't
- 29:05Speaker 2: know if it's more like the high school fond memories
- 29:07Speaker 2: of you know, we you know, we're just so much
- 29:11Speaker 2: better than what we're currently watching. But I do know fundamentally,
- 29:14Speaker 2: and this is a topic I think we'll explore a
- 29:17Speaker 2: little bit. But what has happened. I think with Mexico
- 29:20Speaker 2: opened up some roster spots, quite a few roster spots actually,
- 29:24Speaker 2: and where a lot of the veteran players have gone
- 29:28Speaker 2: that route as opposed to staying with these organizations. And
- 29:32Speaker 2: these guys are fundamentally sound. They're the players that you know,
- 29:37Speaker 2: as long as the game has been going, we're the
- 29:39Speaker 2: ones that we're filling in and whatnot. But the rosters
- 29:42Speaker 2: are very young. The development at the big leagues. Some
- 29:45Speaker 2: of the sloppy play that is just you know, it's
- 29:48Speaker 2: all too ordinary now and it's not as big a deal.
- 29:52Speaker 2: So it's definitely I think for former players you see
- 29:56Speaker 2: the strong opinions on social platforms and whatnot, it's very
- 30:00Speaker 2: tough because you try. I don't have any interest in
- 30:04Speaker 2: arguing with people about it, but I will say it
- 30:07Speaker 2: does look a little bit different. I guess the only
- 30:09Speaker 2: last point. Did you know who saved the game for
- 30:11Speaker 2: the Rockies yesterday?
- 30:13Speaker 5: So?
- 30:13Speaker 1: Uh, it was a guy named either Justin Romano or
- 30:17Speaker 1: Justin Romano. I think that was it.
- 30:21Speaker 2: It might be his cousin Jordan's as well, but uh yeah, yeah,
- 30:28Speaker 2: just out of my head, that's what happens. Man, Jordan Romano,
- 30:32Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Jordan. Uh two quality uh appearances for the Rockies.
- 30:38Speaker 2: So he's back in the big could be nothing, but
- 30:41Speaker 2: he is back in the closers role.
- 30:43Speaker 1: So that was interesting to me. And yeah, uh go halos.
- 30:48Speaker 1: All right, Hey, we're gonna close the show with that.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Remember we do have Halo Territory merchandise on the Halo
- 30:55Speaker 1: Territory YouTube website. You can also go to a Halo
