- 0:28Amber Kuhn: Hello TPR nation. This is Amber Kuhn. I'm back
- 0:30with our Follow up Friday to recap this week's episode
- 0:33highlights and action items. On Monday, Matt was joined by Dan
- 0:37Murphy from Commonwealth. He's the head of wealth strategies on
- 0:41their executive team and is also practicing advisor. Dan joined
- 0:44that to talk about the transformational growth they've
- 0:47had in their firm and the different angles advisors can
- 0:51deliver value to their clients. Dan said clients, in general,
- 0:54want a more personalized experience than they've had in
- 0:57the past, and that technology will continue to change and
- 1:01disrupt and enhance what advisors do, and that what's
- 1:04even more important than before is that clients have trust and
- 1:07transparency in working with an advisor. Matt and Dan discussed
- 1:11how things that used to be considered high level value are
- 1:14now becoming table stakes, and advisors need to have in depth
- 1:18conversations with their clients. Model social self
- 1:21planning, as Dan defines, is truly focused on. It's more
- 1:24about confidence and goal achievement and working together
- 1:27in the relationship. As far as how Dan trains advisors on his
- 1:31team, on these skills and having these in depth conversations, he
- 1:35talked about three core pillars, the first, and he said the
- 1:38biggest is mindset shifting to a new, better way to do things.
- 1:42The second is operations and what does good planning look
- 1:45like. And the third is a platform and what tools are
- 1:48advisors using that the client is seeing throughout the
- 1:51process. Dan spent some time talking about the concept of the
- 1:55experience economy and how economies change over time,
- 1:58along with what end consumers value and expect. So for
- 2:01advisors, if you don't adapt to this and you're only focused on
- 2:04doing things quickly and efficiently, you're going to be
- 2:08left behind. So Dan teaches advisors that they aren't just
- 2:11providing a service or commodity, but those things
- 2:14delivered in a way that's personalized to the client and
- 2:17creates a memorable and positive experience. They talked about
- 2:21the involvement of AI and technology related to this as
- 2:24well, and how ultimately, these things will likely provide good
- 2:27technical answers, but they can't provide the connection or
- 2:31empathy with a person. Dan said a part of that connection really
- 2:35comes from being able to ask good questions, stay curious and
- 2:38really try to understand what someone is asking. He said,
- 2:41Don't rush to give an answer without getting to the heart of
- 2:45the matter with a client and the intention behind the questions
- 2:48they have. Dan said, advisors need to remember why they're in
- 2:52this business and that they're here to service and help, but
- 2:55this means being deeply present and caring in conversations with
- 2:59clients. He said, advisors need to focus on building an
- 3:02experience versus just offering a service. That experience will
- 3:06either be positive or leave clients looking for a better
- 3:09experience elsewhere. It's about time well spent. Let's get into
- 3:13action items. Go to a really nice restaurant in your city and
- 3:16then go to the divious place and make a list of the 10 to 15
- 3:20things that are different in one experience versus the other, and
- 3:24then apply that same thing in your office. Now, on top of
- 3:27that, consider what happens before you step into the
- 3:30restaurant and your office and what happens after. And then
- 3:33remember that planning isn't a one time event. So look at the
- 3:37touch points you have with your clients and the experience
- 3:40you're providing on Thursday, Jamie discussed the dreaded head
- 3:44trash that's holding you back marketing yourself as an
- 3:47advisor, and the fees you charge. But to get started, she
- 3:50talked about the different stages an advisor goes through.
- 3:53The first thing the growth stage, which she mentioned in
- 3:57previous podcasts. And this is Lynn. The only thing you should
- 4:00be focused on is marketing and growth. But with marketing, it
- 4:04encompasses so many things, and it should be whatever gets you
- 4:07on a platform to share your expertise. So everything works,
- 4:11but you have to work it. But marketing also means delivering
- 4:14an exceptional client experience. Jamie also spent
- 4:17some time talking about value adds, and how this is something
- 4:21that takes time. You need to make sure that you have the
- 4:24necessary information to generate the value add, and you
- 4:27also need to make sure that it works the way you want, and that
- 4:31your team understands it as well. So for newer advisors, if
- 4:34you've never done a value add, start with the end result and
- 4:38back into it, and don't try to do four at once. But again, if
- 4:41you're in the early stages of growth focus on perfecting your
- 4:45marketing and client experience and expectations. Now, when you
- 4:48get to that next stage, the freedom stage, Jamie said,
- 4:51advisors have the money to do the things they want, and
- 4:55they're wanting to take more time out of the office and do
- 4:58more delegating and also increase their revenue. And with
- 5:01the Empire stage, which Jamie has also referenced as
- 5:04enterprise as well. It's not just about delegation, but also
- 5:08about training other advisors. And everyone should be doing
- 5:11things the same way. You don't have to say things exactly the
- 5:15same, but you want a common vocabulary, and you want to
- 5:18follow a similar strategic plan for clients, Jamie said she sees
- 5:21most advisors get stuck with that head crash between the
- 5:25growth and freedom, because she said they don't believe they're
- 5:28delivering any value. As an advisor to justify asking
- 5:31someone to pay a fee, she pointed out, and this should
- 5:35come as no surprise to anyone, she doesn't work for free, but
- 5:38neither should you. Jamie's comfortable with what she's
- 5:41charging, because she knows the value she's providing, but the
- 5:45moment she doesn't feel she's providing value, she either
- 5:48graduates the client or she does an assessment, she'll list out
- 5:52things about her that make her one of a kind and one of many.
- 5:55And what she's found when other people start doing this
- 5:58assessment is that they start to get in their heads and think
- 6:02they have to be unique or different, that they're just one
- 6:05of many. But you need to remember that just because
- 6:08people are looking for a similar service you might offer compared
- 6:12to someone else, it doesn't mean they want that service from
- 6:15someone else. So with the assessment, she said, don't get
- 6:19discouraged by what makes you one of many, but take the time
- 6:22to write out when a client hires you, what are you going to
- 6:26deliver, and what areas of financial planning are you going
- 6:29to cover? And you just keep rotating through that list as
- 6:32you meet with your clients, because our lives are constantly
- 6:36changing, and you get to come in as a problem solver, listen to
- 6:39their questions and concerns, and if you're doing all these
- 6:43things, and you need to be comfortable knowing that there's
- 6:46going to be an exchange of value, and that exchange of
- 6:49value is that you're taking care of things for them. Jamie said,
- 6:53don't look at someone and say that they can or can't afford
- 6:56you. Your price is what it is, and don't discount it. So if
- 7:00you're struggling with delivering value or with the
- 7:03hedge trap, what you're charging, then write it down and
- 7:06make yourself a checklist of what you said you were going to
- 7:09do and what you did. If you did what you said you were going to
- 7:13do, then you shouldn't have any problems charging what you said
- 7:17you're going to charge, because it's your client's choice to
- 7:20hire you. That wraps up this six recap. So TPR nation, if you're
