- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Imperfect Impulse with Brie O'Connor.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Hey, I'm your host, Brie O'Connor.
- 0:08Today I'm going to try and do just a mini episode because I'm
- 0:13technically still on
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: break,
- 0:14but a few things have bubbled up in my attention and I want to
- 0:20bring this to the
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: group as something to meditate on.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: I'm going to start with a little story.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Back when my youngest was just a baby, we had an event.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Now there's 10 years between my eldest and my youngest children.
- 0:37So we often went to these parties with the parents of my eldest
- 0:44child's friends.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: That was our social group of the moment.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: And we're at this birthday party or something for...
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: or maybe it was an end of the school year party.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: At any rate,
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: we were at somebody's house,
- 1:01a bunch of fifth grade kids running all over the joint and
- 1:06doing fifth grade
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: things.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: And,
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: a couple of younger siblings,
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: but most of them in,
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: probably second or third grade.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: So the age range was from second to fifth.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: And the adults are all talking and
- 1:22having drinks in the kitchen,
- 1:24and my baby,
- 1:26at the time,
- 1:27she cries,
- 1:28so I go to attend to her.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: Now,
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: it's at this point,
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: and the story picks up from my husband's perspective,
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: because I did not hear this,
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: but my husband thought that this was hilarious.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: One of our friends that was standing next to my husband,
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: he looks at the baby,
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: and he looks at Tom,
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: and he says,
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Oh,
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Are we still doing this?
- 1:55Just because our children were getting older that that
- 2:00experience of being around
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: an infant was over and couldn't quite imagine anyone else in that space.
- 2:11That phrase comes to mind as I was wandering around Instagram
- 2:17and checking out some
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: of my friends and what they're up to these days.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: And boy, a lot of people are getting new headshots.
- 2:27And in doing what I do,
- 2:31I have a large group of collaborators and friends and
- 2:37acquaintances who
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: And they span from 20 to 80.
- 2:43So as I'm looking at all of these active friends of mine all
- 2:50dropping new headshots
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: into their IG accounts,
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: and I'm noticing that a lot of these younger women are...
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: have at least one photo where they are lustily staring at the camera.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: And that thought entered my head, like, oh, are we still doing this?
- 3:16And it's something that I've always had a difficult time
- 3:20navigating because I never
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: quite fit into that lusty archetype.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: It's not a natural fit for me, and if I do,
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: do it, it feels weird, possibly a little repulsive.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Maybe that's just me.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Not that I think I couldn't do it or that I don't have it in me.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: It's just not a natural place for me to be.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: And I'm wondering about this desire of
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: I'll readily admit that encountering a face,
- 4:00it feels like that face is looking at you with some kind of
- 4:05thirst or hunger,
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: is automatically appealing to the nervous system.
- 4:12And it doesn't matter if you're necessarily sexually attracted
- 4:15to that person.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: There is something that is appealing,
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: especially if the shine on the cheekbone is in just the right place.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: Sorry about that ding.
- 4:27But I'm also curious that these photographs are being posted by
- 4:35women who would
- 4:37normally suggest that the male gaze is not something that they
- 4:44want to play to.
- 4:45And this brings me to a much deeper question about how we
- 4:51represent feminine desire.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Quite frequently,
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: you'll see these young women who are,
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: in the peak of their physical form.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: They're often dancers, very active, and, you know, I'm not a prude.
- 5:09I don't mind if you want to show off your body,
- 5:14if that's a thing you want to do.
- 5:18But these boudoir photos and a young woman in a presumably
- 5:24boyfriend's button-down
- 5:26shirt sitting and nothing else and sitting amongst some rumpled
- 5:32covers in a fresh
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: morning light.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: There's no mistaking the message of that photo.
- 5:39That photo invites you to imagine that that's your bed and your
- 5:45shirt and your window.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: And there's this young girl there for you.
- 5:53And not that I want to stop,
- 5:55because I do find a lot of these photos beautiful.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: I love pinups, man.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: There's something joyful and fun in them.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: But I don't know if we have ever...
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: truly examined what female desire looks like outside pleasing men.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: And it just makes me curious.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: Now, I remember going to see Eyes Wide Shut, not knowing what to expect.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: I'm sitting in the theater and I
- 6:24I don't remember much of that movie other than thinking it was
- 6:27a load of horseshit.
- 6:30But there's a moment when Nicole Kidman starts going into this
- 6:34monologue as they're
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: getting ready for their evening.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: And it's this long, drawn-out, quiet monologue.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: And for a second, I perked up and I went, oh, wow, this is...
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: This is exciting.
- 6:52This is touching on the nature of female desire and what that
- 6:57might be like in a
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: singular perspective.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: And no, that's not what the movie was about at all.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: My hopes were dashed soon after.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: And I don't have answers for this at all.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: I'm just curious and I want to pose this as a creative question.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: What is the true nature of female desire?
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: What does it look like?
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: And I don't want to be pornographic about it.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: Because that's a really easy place.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: An easy exploitative place that we go to.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: And that's why this conversation is so tricky.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: So I'm posing it to you.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: What is...
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: self-aware, self-possessed female desire look like?
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: And have we ever seen it?
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: I'm curious.
- 7:56I'm curious what that might entail and how that might enter a
- 8:02story somewhere.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: Maybe I'll percolate on it for a while myself.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: We'll see what happens.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: That's it for our mini episode of The Imperfect Impulse.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: I want to let you know of a few things we've got coming up.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: On May 30th,
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: we are taking part in Reading Resistance series,
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: which will be happening at the Old Stone House in Brooklyn on May 30th.
