- 0:44Speaker 2: Jedi Master John Mills, John.
- 0:47Speaker 1: What is that behind you?
- 0:50Speaker 2: Exactly? Well, it's actually it's a galactic interpretation of my
- 0:54Speaker 2: favorite piece of heart, which is actually going to be
- 0:58Speaker 2: Edvard Munch's the Scream in this case to represent the
- 1:03Speaker 2: existential angst of the fact that I have a holographic
- 1:07Speaker 2: CG thing as part of my costume. Actually, huh so
- 1:13Speaker 2: you know, yeah, Well, I'm just hoping these drinks don't
- 1:17Speaker 2: have nanobots that make me act all Cray Cray in
- 1:20Speaker 2: this episode.
- 1:21Speaker 1: I hope not.
- 1:22Speaker 2: I hope not.
- 1:23Speaker 1: That would I mean, if you're if you're drinking that

- 2:00Speaker 1: walking through the Mandalorian, we're at an episode called Guns
- 2:03Speaker 1: for Hire directed by Bryce Dallas. Howard and Bocaton and
- 2:08Speaker 1: Den Deijarn are on a mission to find her old troupe,
- 2:16Speaker 1: which had been taken over and left her by the
- 2:19Speaker 1: wayside because you know, she couldn't hold on to the
- 2:23Speaker 1: Dark Saver it was given to her, and therefore she
- 2:26Speaker 1: was not the leader that they were looking for. Gosh,
- 2:30Speaker 1: let's just get right into it, man, dude. This episode
- 2:34Speaker 1: feels so schizophrenic because there's two completely different sides to
- 2:40Speaker 1: this episode. One feels like an episode of Star Trek
- 2:44Speaker 1: that we might experience in a twenty two episode twenty
- 2:47Speaker 1: four twenty six episode season where you've got so much
- 2:51Speaker 1: time on your hands and you're just kind of exploring
- 2:54Speaker 1: the universe, and the other is completely connected to the
- 2:58Speaker 1: rest of the Mandalorian story that we've been telling, and
- 3:02Speaker 1: I don't quite know, even in the rewatch, just exactly
- 3:06Speaker 1: how to make these two fit.
- 3:11Speaker 2: I enjoyed it more on the rewatch, maybe because my
- 3:16Speaker 2: earlier disappointment was not possible. But I think you hit
- 3:21Speaker 2: the nail on the head there. This is a difficult
- 3:23Speaker 2: episode because if we still lived in the era of
- 3:27Speaker 2: the twenty four twenty two episode season, then an episode
- 3:32Speaker 2: like this is one twenty fourth of the time. And
- 3:35Speaker 2: I'm much more forgiving about sort of, you know, having
- 3:38Speaker 2: a side quest like this where it's like, oh, this
- 3:40Speaker 2: is silly fun, but okay, it's a palette cleanser between
- 3:43Speaker 2: the more serious episodes. Sure, it's a bottle episode, which
- 3:47Speaker 2: I think is what everybody would call a Star Trek
- 3:50Speaker 2: episode like this, where it's like it's pretty much self contained, right,
- 3:53Speaker 2: even though you have a prologue and an epilogue that
- 3:55Speaker 2: tie into the rest of it. Yeah, okay, right. X
- 3:59Speaker 2: File had episodes like that too, where you know, when
- 4:02Speaker 2: they had the long seasons and everything, where it was like, yeah,
- 4:05Speaker 2: you know what, the Fluke Monster has nothing to do
- 4:07Speaker 2: with the overall mythology and you just kind of like it,
- 4:09Speaker 2: or the Share episode or anything like that. It doesn't
- 4:13Speaker 2: have to do with the big alien mythology and government
- 4:15Speaker 2: conspiracy stuff. It's just it's the X Files. We're going
- 4:18Speaker 2: to do stuff like this. I think what makes this
- 4:21Speaker 2: episode doubly frustrating is because we feel like we lost
- 4:26Speaker 2: time with the earlier episode with Doctor Pershing, because that
- 4:31Speaker 2: felt like a side quest episode constructed just like this one,
- 4:36Speaker 2: where it opens up, Oh, yeah, I'm fully invested. Then
- 4:39Speaker 2: it cuts over to something and I'm like, oh, is
- 4:41Speaker 2: this just world building? Oh? This feels like it's tied
- 4:45Speaker 2: into Rangers of the New Republic, okay, Oh, and then
- 4:49Speaker 2: the end feels tacked in. This follows the same structure,
- 4:54Speaker 2: and I think that's its biggest problem is in the
- 4:58Speaker 2: context of an ADEP season, I don't know why I'm
- 5:03Speaker 2: having a stunt casting episode like this, because I'll go
- 5:06Speaker 2: ahead and I'll throw out there to you. The first
- 5:10Speaker 2: time I watched this, seeing Lizzo and Jack Black, I
- 5:16Speaker 2: just was taken completely out of it. Now, we've had
- 5:21Speaker 2: nostalgia casting before. Christopher Lloyd occurs in that in that context,
- 5:28Speaker 2: Michael Been exists in that context. There's there's a little
- 5:33Speaker 2: stunt casting that happens.
- 5:35Speaker 3: But.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Jack Black and Lizzo are just too recognizable, and it's
- 5:41Speaker 2: just it's sort of like a brain break that happens
- 5:43Speaker 2: with me. Did that happen with you too?
- 5:48Speaker 1: With Lizzo more so than with Jack Black, Bainley, because
- 5:52Speaker 1: you know, at least Jack Black, I think, is kind
- 5:56Speaker 1: of playing this over the top character that feels like
- 6:00Speaker 1: you could meet him in the Clone Wars. Lizzo's acting
- 6:05Speaker 1: here is just so wooden that there's just not a
- 6:10Speaker 1: lot to it, and I think that really does pull
- 6:12Speaker 1: you out and make you just picture who this is
- 6:16Speaker 1: in real life. But I agree too, it's like, even
- 6:20Speaker 1: for all that Jack Black is doing, these are names
- 6:24Speaker 1: that are so big that they just they bring you
- 6:27Speaker 1: out of Star Wars, right, they bring you out of
- 6:31Speaker 1: the universe far far away. And I would say too,
- 6:38Speaker 1: it probably would have helped if Jack Black had basically
- 6:42Speaker 1: been playing the character that Christopher Lloyd is, so he's
- 6:49Speaker 1: not playing something you've seen.
- 6:50Speaker 2: So often.
- 6:53Speaker 1: And this kind of chriacture of himself at this point
- 6:56Speaker 1: that he just continues to play, and had Christopher Lloyd
- 7:01Speaker 1: playing the character that Jack Black.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Is playing, it's interesting. I think it would have.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Fit much much better in the episode, and it would
- 7:10Speaker 1: have made it feel more cohesive, because again, you have
- 7:16Speaker 1: them sort of playing a little bit against type, and
- 7:19Speaker 1: I would have liked that more.
- 7:21Speaker 2: And I agree with you, like.
- 7:25Speaker 1: It is an incredibly interesting thing to want to exploit
- 7:28Speaker 1: the explore the idea of droids and their lives and
- 7:33Speaker 1: their rights and all that. I think that's really interesting.
- 7:37Speaker 1: But again, this also feels like half an episode that
- 7:41Speaker 1: should have been in Rangers of the New Republic YEP.
- 7:45Speaker 1: And the other half of this episode is just incredibly
- 7:48Speaker 1: important for everything we're doing with the Mandalorians. And you know,
- 7:53Speaker 1: I loved seeing the battle droids.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Again.
- 7:55Speaker 1: I loved getting to, you know, go to the Droid
- 7:59Speaker 1: bar and learn about out non a penth Day or
- 8:01Speaker 1: whatever they call it that they kind of like Drew, Yeah,
- 8:05Speaker 1: Repente exactly. It's like a prison planet but for your
- 8:11Speaker 1: body as a droid and less frozen though. But yeah,
- 8:18Speaker 1: like all of that, and in the same way, like
- 8:21Speaker 1: what's so fascinating because we watching this episode, they steal
- 8:25Speaker 1: so much from Harry Potter. The droid's whole identity is
- 8:29Speaker 1: basically house elves. Yeah, they gave us life, and we
- 8:34Speaker 1: want to serve them. That's what makes us happy, you know,
- 8:37Speaker 1: And of course you know that's not and Harry Potter,
- 8:39Speaker 1: you know, wizards don't give house elves lives, but their
- 8:42Speaker 1: whole lives are revolve around serving their masters, and the
- 8:48Speaker 1: same thing with droids.
- 8:49Speaker 2: And then of course you know the Dark Sabers.
- 8:53Speaker 1: We talked about it way back when we crossed over
- 8:56Speaker 1: with the six or two Club, I think previously when
- 8:59Speaker 1: we talked about season. But it's the Elder one and
- 9:02Speaker 1: so it's just like there's a lot of this that Again,
- 9:06Speaker 1: it's not that it's bad in the sense that we
- 9:08Speaker 1: want to explore these things. They are interesting watching dinn play,
- 9:12Speaker 1: you know, talk to ug knots and because of the
- 9:14Speaker 1: experience and all that stuff's not bad. It just feels
- 9:19Speaker 1: out of place in an eight episode season. Like you said,
- 9:24Speaker 1: you know, if we were even maybe doing ten episodes,
- 9:27Speaker 1: maybe this feels less awkward because having that stop would
- 9:33Speaker 1: have been like it sees at episode six, right, and
- 9:36Speaker 1: then you have four more episodes after that to really
- 9:38Speaker 1: build that finale. You know, here there's only two episodes
- 9:42Speaker 1: after this.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Well, I mean, but additionally, you know, one of the
- 9:49Speaker 2: criticisms that was leveled I think unfairly toward the Mandalorian
- 9:53Speaker 2: is you know, oh, it felt like a video game episode,
- 9:56Speaker 2: like all the you know, he shows up, he's given
- 9:59Speaker 2: a quest, completes the quest, he gets the next thing
- 10:02Speaker 2: to continue on to the next level. I think that's
- 10:05Speaker 2: a completely unfair thing. But this one what's frustrating is
- 10:08Speaker 2: even if you wanted to accept that as a valid criticism, Oh,
- 10:12Speaker 2: you have to go complete this request for me to
- 10:14Speaker 2: give you permission to go do this thing that you
- 10:15Speaker 2: could do without asking me. Well, that's silly.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Yeah, what are they going to do to stop them?
- 10:21Speaker 1: They don't have an army.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Right, we don't have a military, but you can't go
- 10:25Speaker 2: see them what Like that doesn't even make sense. And
- 10:30Speaker 2: it again, I definitely think this is one of those
- 10:33Speaker 2: Rangers of the New Republic episodes that got subsumed. They
- 10:37Speaker 2: just didn't want to throw away the work. And I
- 10:40Speaker 2: don't hate the episode, that's the thing. I don't even
- 10:43Speaker 2: hate the Lizzo and Jack black Stuff. It's cute, it's
- 10:47Speaker 2: it's frivolous. The only frustration comes from the fact that
- 10:52Speaker 2: it burns so much time, and especially as we go
- 10:56Speaker 2: forward when we meet the spies and we go to Mandalor,
- 11:00Speaker 2: I get frustrated all over again because I'm like, man,
- 11:03Speaker 2: I wish I had that hour because I could have
- 11:05Speaker 2: spent it with these guys and found out even more
- 11:07Speaker 2: about what they were doing instead of having them be
- 11:09Speaker 2: in like one episode with an opportunity to talk about themselves.
- 11:15Speaker 2: That's really frustrating to me. That's very difficult, and it's
- 11:23Speaker 2: one of those things where again I don't if anything.
- 11:28Speaker 2: What I like about the episode is the fact that
- 11:32Speaker 2: it has a very and I know people will grown
- 11:35Speaker 2: when I say this, but it has a very holiday
- 11:37Speaker 2: special feel to it where it's just bonkers. It's just crazy.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Is they're just doing crazy space stuff because why not?
- 11:48Speaker 2: And it's silly and it's not taking itself seriously cool.
- 11:52Speaker 2: I don't have a problem with that. It's just awkwardly
- 11:56Speaker 2: wedged in there. And I even think that having the
- 12:02Speaker 2: opening part with the guns for hire, this is another
- 12:05Speaker 2: episode where like I look at the story editing possibilities,
- 12:09Speaker 2: and I'm like, man, this is something that that little
- 12:12Speaker 2: teaser should have actually happened earlier in the season. Like
- 12:17Speaker 2: as we go through the season, I get even more
- 12:19Speaker 2: of a sense of like I could pick a part
- 12:21Speaker 2: pizza pieces of this and re edit the season together
- 12:24Speaker 2: and it would have gone a lot better, I think.
- 12:27Speaker 2: And the thing is, this is somebody who's not a
- 12:29Speaker 2: professional editor, So throw away my opinion if you want to.
- 12:33Speaker 2: But I look at this and again there's a whole
- 12:37Speaker 2: ton of puzzle pieces and I just think they that
- 12:40Speaker 2: the puzzle doesn't come together in the right way. I
- 12:43Speaker 2: think this episode can even work in the context of
- 12:46Speaker 2: an eight episode season if yep, things are juggled a
- 12:52Speaker 2: different way.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that. In rewatching the season, one of
- 12:57Speaker 1: the things that I've come down to, which is this
- 13:02Speaker 1: is this.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Is really interesting.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Like so you know, over the years, when we've revisited
- 13:08Speaker 1: the sequel trilogy, it's been fascinating to see just kind
- 13:11Speaker 1: of my original reactions be solidified for me in the
- 13:17Speaker 1: sense that from the moment this season ended, Season three ended,
- 13:22Speaker 1: and even it was as it was going on as
- 13:24Speaker 1: it was originally airing, it just felt misedited together story wise,
- 13:30Speaker 1: it felt like it needed to be rearranged, and you
- 13:33Speaker 1: had the pieces to be able to do that. And
- 13:37Speaker 1: what that would have taken was either fixing where things
- 13:41Speaker 1: happened story wise in different episodes, or it would have
- 13:47Speaker 1: taken more of maybe an interweaving. But I think either
- 13:50Speaker 1: one of those, you could have done this and still
- 13:53Speaker 1: made it work with what you had. Story wise, it
- 13:57Speaker 1: just need to be reordered. And because again, like you said,
- 14:06Speaker 1: I don't like just hate anything in this episode other
- 14:11Speaker 1: than I think just some of the casting choices, which
- 14:13Speaker 1: I think just really hurt the episode, and you can't
- 14:16Speaker 1: do anything about that with that casting choice other than
- 14:19Speaker 1: just bear it. But there is stuff to like in
- 14:24Speaker 1: this again, the droid things. That's kind of fascinating and
- 14:30Speaker 1: it's a fun thing because you know, ever since we
- 14:33Speaker 1: you know, saw Solo and you had L three and
- 14:37Speaker 1: that kind of thing, it brought droids to life in
- 14:39Speaker 1: a way that we never really thought of, I think,
- 14:43Speaker 1: and so this kind of plays on that what is
- 14:47Speaker 1: a droid's life really like? And yeah, and you know,
- 14:52Speaker 1: can they be redeemed if they're quote unquote and evil
- 14:54Speaker 1: droid with evil programming?
- 14:56Speaker 2: Which gosh, I.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Mean that whole aspect is just like that's meta and
- 15:01Speaker 1: it could have been something really interesting if you would
- 15:03Speaker 1: explored it, like in a Clone Wars episode.
- 15:06Speaker 2: I think the problem is that.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Just it in this season and the way and where
- 15:11Speaker 1: it is, it just doesn't work the way they want
- 15:14Speaker 1: it to.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Yeah. I agree, And I think that's basically pretty much
- 15:21Speaker 2: all there is to say about the season or not
- 15:24Speaker 2: the season. Well, I all there is to say about
- 15:27Speaker 2: the episode in a very large sense where it's like
- 15:31Speaker 2: like I don't want to beat up on it, like
- 15:32Speaker 2: even talking about the casting. I agree with you, Lizzo
- 15:37Speaker 2: isn't well suited for what this role is asking. But
- 15:42Speaker 2: I'm not mad at Lizo about it. I'm not dragging Lizzo.
- 15:47Speaker 2: This is just a choice. I wouldn't have turned it down.
- 15:51Speaker 2: They gave her the opportunity to do this. I want
- 15:53Speaker 2: to said yes too, who wouldn't And it's not her
- 15:57Speaker 2: fault in that sense. She is trying her best. If anything,
- 16:03Speaker 2: I would lay it at the feet of Bryce Dallas
- 16:06Speaker 2: Howard because I happen to be in the Roger Ebert camp.
- 16:11Speaker 2: It's the job of the director to get the performance
- 16:14Speaker 2: you need from the talent you have, and therefore, if
- 16:19Speaker 2: there's any shortcoming in Lizzo's performance, it's not just her fault,
- 16:25Speaker 2: it's actually the fault of the director, because the director
- 16:28Speaker 2: should be able to get the performance there, or at
- 16:33Speaker 2: least something that can be edited around in such a
- 16:36Speaker 2: way that it doesn't feel as efficient well.
- 16:41Speaker 1: And I think that the other part about this that
- 16:43Speaker 1: is frustrating is that the whole aspect with the man
- 16:47Speaker 1: Ilurians is great. You know, the fight between Bocaton and
- 16:57Speaker 1: wool what's his name acts and acts fantastic, right. The
- 17:05Speaker 1: bringing together of the Mandalorians. You know that bo had
- 17:09Speaker 1: put so much time and effort to putting in together,
- 17:12Speaker 1: you know, at but now she's taking what she had
- 17:15Speaker 1: done previously and bringing all the Mandalorians back together. And
- 17:20Speaker 1: it's just like that part of the story is just
- 17:24Speaker 1: so wonderful, and it feels as though that that should
- 17:29Speaker 1: have been the main focus of the entire episode because
- 17:32Speaker 1: it's so pivotal to the storyline of the Mandalorian and
- 17:39Speaker 1: the Mandalorians, as we've talked about throughout this season. And
- 17:44Speaker 1: I think that's the other frustration that I feel. It's
- 17:46Speaker 1: like the other side of the episode fills so feels
- 17:52Speaker 1: so frivolous compared to the really important thing that's happening
- 17:57Speaker 1: here at the end of this episode, which then gets
- 17:59Speaker 1: short shot rift because we only have seven minutes to
- 18:04Speaker 1: deal with it in a forty five minute episode.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's it, it is and look, I'll yes,
- 18:13Speaker 2: the stuff with the droids is very interesting, But at
- 18:16Speaker 2: the same time, I could understand why a more casual
- 18:22Speaker 2: fan than you and I would feel frustrated and even
- 18:25Speaker 2: a little lost because they're bringing battle droids into this
- 18:30Speaker 2: and it's yeah, okay, it's a it's a prequel era thing.
- 18:34Speaker 2: But that's even a little bit disorienting for somebody who's
- 18:38Speaker 2: a cash because they're they're gonna look at that and
- 18:41Speaker 2: they're gonna be like, wait, I thought we were in
- 18:42Speaker 2: a different era. Wait what Yeah, because the Arab blending
- 18:46Speaker 2: doesn't always work as well. I speak from personal experience
- 18:50Speaker 2: that the Ara blending doesn't always uh work well when
- 18:53Speaker 2: I talk with people where they're like, wait, when when
- 18:58Speaker 2: is this happening? Yeah, because I thought that belonged to
- 19:00Speaker 2: that era because people look for the visual stuff that happens,
- 19:04Speaker 2: So even changing the types of droids that they had
- 19:08Speaker 2: would have I think helped the episode and sprinkle in
- 19:12Speaker 2: some battle droids, but don't have so many battle droids everywhere. Yeah,
- 19:16Speaker 2: it's a delightful thing for me. I thought it was great,
- 19:19Speaker 2: but I understand why it makes it a little harder
- 19:22Speaker 2: to access for a more casual fan.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Yeah, it is one of those episodes where you know,
- 19:32Speaker 1: it feels like it could have been a thing that
- 19:38Speaker 1: I would have had hours to talk about, and instead,
- 19:43Speaker 1: because we're truncated the important part, it's just it feels
- 19:47Speaker 1: like a less important episode, even though the end of
- 19:49Speaker 1: this is pivotal to the end of the season where
- 19:52Speaker 1: we're going in the next two episodes, and so that's
- 19:56Speaker 1: just a strange thing. And so I don't know, I
- 20:00Speaker 1: what do you rate this episode?
- 20:02Speaker 2: Honestly, it's gonna buy default have the lowest rating. I
- 20:05Speaker 2: think I'm going to give this season, which is two
- 20:07Speaker 2: and a half, because again, there are parts here that
- 20:11Speaker 2: I enjoyed like on their own. And when I rewatched this,
- 20:14Speaker 2: I rewatched it with my kid and she had fun
- 20:19Speaker 2: with it. Again, I always encourage people to watch a
- 20:22Speaker 2: show with a kid. The kid should be the part
- 20:27Speaker 2: of you inside that the show was talking to. And
- 20:31Speaker 2: you know, ten year old me would have been far
- 20:33Speaker 2: less critical of it, but I got to come into
- 20:36Speaker 2: this a little more critically and look at it and
- 20:39Speaker 2: be like, yeah, you know, I don't fault the pieces.
- 20:44Speaker 2: I just fault the way it came together. And I
- 20:46Speaker 2: think there were opportunities, especially in the context of the
- 20:49Speaker 2: season as a whole, where they could have taken the
- 20:51Speaker 2: pieces of this, including the stuff on Peloton twenty five
- 20:58Speaker 2: or whatever the planet's called. Yeah, I'll never remember this name,
- 21:03Speaker 2: but like, just rearranging pieces could have made it work
- 21:09Speaker 2: a lot better. So where do you land with it? Yeah?
- 21:13Speaker 1: I think that's well said. You know, the fact that
- 21:15Speaker 1: this is unfortunately like a two and a half, because
- 21:17Speaker 1: I do think it's like half a good episode. And
- 21:21Speaker 1: the reason I say that is because it's the half
- 21:24Speaker 1: that matters. We actually get less than half the episode
- 21:27Speaker 1: to deal with it, but the other part does have
- 21:30Speaker 1: enough interesting aspects that it's like, I'm not sad that
- 21:34Speaker 1: we went there. I'm just frustrated we went there right now,
- 21:39Speaker 1: And so you know, I think that, yep, it's just
- 21:45Speaker 1: where we are, and We've got two more episodes this
- 21:48Speaker 1: season to talk about, and then I'm just really interested
- 21:53Speaker 1: to see where we end up because I do remember
- 21:57Speaker 1: those being strong together as like a duology for the
- 22:03Speaker 1: finale for season three, and so I can't wait to
- 22:07Speaker 1: get to them. But John Gosh, you know, we've had
- 22:10Speaker 1: so much Mandalorian talk. We've talked about mal as well
- 22:14Speaker 1: recently talked about that whole season. Mando and Grogu is
- 22:18Speaker 1: just about to come out. So if people want to
- 22:20Speaker 1: talk Star Wars, where would they find you.
- 22:23Speaker 2: I'm always happy to talk to Star Wars. Look for
- 22:25Speaker 2: me online as Kessel Junkie. I love talking on Letterbox
- 22:29Speaker 2: and good Reads. So on May twenty first preview night,
- 22:34Speaker 2: if you want to find out what I thought about
- 22:35Speaker 2: Mandalorian and Grogu, look to Letterbox because that'll be the
- 22:39Speaker 2: first indication of how that conversation is going to go.

- 23:30Speaker 2: So please check out all of those shows.
- 23:33Speaker 1: But as always, John, you know, I think ooh ooh,
- 23:37Speaker 1: I think they're having I think we're having brunch here
