- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, guys, welcome to another episode of Eating Wild Broke.
- 0:02Speaker 1: I'm your host, Coley Witt, and today we have very
- 0:05Speaker 1: special guests, Alex Media in the building. Usually I do
- 0:09Speaker 1: not read bios or anything, but this is very short,
- 0:12Speaker 1: but I want you guys to get a full encompass
- 0:14Speaker 1: of what Alex does. So. Alex Media is a filmmaker
- 0:17Speaker 1: and producer recognized for his work across major comedy and
- 0:20Speaker 1: digital platforms. He's a co host of Flagrant Podcasts, which
- 0:23Speaker 1: we all know and love, the director of Andrew Schultz
- 0:26Speaker 1: Netflix special Schultz Saves America, producer on the Brilliant Idiots podcast,
- 0:32Speaker 1: co owner of WTF Studios, where we are today. We
- 0:34Speaker 1: are not in studio, so he will not be cooking
- 0:37Speaker 1: for us, and which is a full service production facility,
- 0:41Speaker 1: which if you've watched any of our remote remote episodes
- 0:44Speaker 1: we always tape at WTF. We don't cheat on him
- 0:48Speaker 1: unless he is overbooked, which today he was slightly overbooked,
- 0:54Speaker 1: very very overbooked, And so I cheated on him for
- 0:57Speaker 1: like a micro one session down the street, and I
- 1:00Speaker 1: came right back to where I belong WTF Always I
- 1:02Speaker 1: forgive it. Yeah, I had no choice.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Forgive, but we fixed that problem. We're adding another space
- 1:09Speaker 2: we did.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Okay, I'm in. You know, I'm going to speak some
- 1:12Speaker 1: other good things into fruition for La too. You know,
- 1:15Speaker 1: we'll see. But anyways, before we get into Alex's story,
- 1:33Speaker 1: we got to know what you and I are going
- 1:35Speaker 1: to be eating today.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Okay, So my struggle meal. When I was young, I
- 1:40Speaker 2: had a lot of cereal because I didn't know how
- 1:42Speaker 2: to cook. And to this day, to this day, I
- 1:45Speaker 2: still don't know how to cook.
- 1:47Speaker 1: So you still don't know how to don't know how
- 1:49Speaker 1: to cook? Okay.
- 1:50Speaker 2: I make two things I could do steak like a
- 1:55Speaker 2: nice restaurant sake.
- 1:56Speaker 1: And I love how you added that you could really
- 1:59Speaker 1: do this steak, you know, like not.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Just regular steak, like good stick cut steak. And a
- 2:04Speaker 2: mac and cheese. My mac and cheese. I took my
- 2:06Speaker 2: mom's recipe, I improved it a little bit, and I
- 2:08Speaker 2: make it one time a year Thanksgiving.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Wow. Yeah, I love how you also semi hated on
- 2:14Speaker 1: your mom in that bit.
- 2:15Speaker 2: No, I mean, I gotta give it a credit. It's
- 2:17Speaker 2: not like I came up with the recipe, but I
- 2:18Speaker 2: took her recipe.
- 2:19Speaker 1: And improved it though. Okay, so not only did you
- 2:23Speaker 1: improve her dish, I'm wondering how Yeah, go ahead open it.
- 2:26Speaker 1: We're gonna be eating it. So Alex has a nice
- 2:29Speaker 1: twist to his honey nut cherryos. I have never had this.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Go ahead, tell tell everybody what we're doing to this honey.
- 2:37Speaker 2: So when I was young, I also like sweets. I
- 2:39Speaker 2: had a problem with sweets up until about a year
- 2:42Speaker 2: ago when I was diagnosed as being pre diabetic. So
- 2:46Speaker 2: now I got I got everything.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Yeah, diagnosed, I'd be thinking I'm invincible when it comes
- 2:51Speaker 1: to candy. But it's possible.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's a problem. It's anything sweet in the house.
- 2:55Speaker 2: It's gone in like five minutes. But now and now
- 2:57Speaker 2: I got it under wrapt. So this might send me,
- 3:00Speaker 2: you know, relas me. But Okaynat, I don't.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Oh, he does have it. Okay, the sarment. So we're
- 3:06Speaker 1: gonna do the So are you gonna live large tonight? Yeah? Yeah, okay, okay.
- 3:12Speaker 2: So we got the terials and then I would either
- 3:16Speaker 2: add sugar or honey, but the honey. I would steal
- 3:21Speaker 2: the packets from McDonald's cause they would have the honey
- 3:23Speaker 2: packets that you would get. Oh yeah, yeah, but it's
- 3:35Speaker 2: better with the honey, cause honey cheerios. You know, you
- 3:37Speaker 2: gotta stay on bread.
- 3:38Speaker 1: I've never done this, so go ahead.
- 3:41Speaker 2: So you got stay over here. So you gotta lightly
- 3:48Speaker 2: lightly drizzle, but you have to cover all the surface
- 3:52Speaker 2: area and then once you do that, oh yeah, it
- 3:57Speaker 2: don't matter, it's all going the same place.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Okay.
- 4:00Speaker 2: So yeah, nice little circular motion. You gotta cover all
- 4:04Speaker 2: the top. Yeah yah, you should have saw it. You
- 4:11Speaker 2: should have saw my frosted flakes. Yuh, like I used
- 4:15Speaker 2: to cover it and sugar. It's crazy. Also, they're not
- 4:19Speaker 2: gonna be able to hear you.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Okay, so I didn't know if you were like black
- 4:23Speaker 1: post or whatever, but I was like, you know, what.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Are you wearing a wireless bike?
- 4:28Speaker 1: No?
- 4:28Speaker 2: Oh, they're not gonna be able to.
- 4:32Speaker 1: I forgot.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Yeah, we doing podcasting alright. But then it's very important.
- 4:37Speaker 2: The same way you did that with the honey, you
- 4:39Speaker 2: have to do it with the milk. You have to
- 4:41Speaker 2: pour the milk slow and like cover the honey or
- 4:43Speaker 2: else it's not gonna like break down.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Oh okay, yeah, cause I see it grouping up.
- 4:47Speaker 2: There exactly, So you gotta like that and make sure
- 4:49Speaker 2: you get all the spots.
- 4:51Speaker 1: And when did you come up with this theory?
- 4:54Speaker 2: When when you're a kid you got mad time for.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Someone that doesn't cook, you invested a lot.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Okay, but I had a lot of cereals, so I
- 5:03Speaker 2: had taught to you don't change it. I've tried different things.
- 5:06Speaker 1: When was the last time you had this dish?
- 5:09Speaker 2: It's been years? Like cereal, I try to stay away from,
- 5:12Speaker 2: you know, the carbs. Now I'm just high protein, low
- 5:15Speaker 2: carb diet. So this is gonna be a nice low
- 5:18Speaker 2: treat for myself.
- 5:19Speaker 1: It's gonna be a treat. But I want to see,
- 5:21Speaker 1: like how much nostalgia comes from you eating this?
- 5:24Speaker 2: Oh man, this is gonna spike my insulin happily.
- 5:28Speaker 1: But you're pre pre right. Do you have to monitor
- 5:31Speaker 1: your insulin if you're Look how happy he is.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Look at that you got you gotta I'm on now,
- 5:41Speaker 2: come on now, I ain't.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Gonna I purposely tried to get the spoon with the
- 5:49Speaker 1: honey on it. I'm not gonna front. Yo, you live,
- 5:55Speaker 1: you live.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Mm after I do it, my mom's back and you know,
- 6:03Speaker 2: little change make it a little better.
- 6:06Speaker 1: I'm not gonna lie. I would totally do that as
- 6:09Speaker 1: an adult moving forward like this is really good.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I would to, and I'm probably gonna do
- 6:14Speaker 2: this when I get home now. Yeah, oh that.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Was good, Yo, that was actually really good, like really good,
- 6:25Speaker 1: impressively good shout outs to. So take me back to
- 6:28Speaker 1: that era. What was going on in the household? What
- 6:30Speaker 1: was the household looking like?
- 6:31Speaker 2: So I grew up in far Rockaway, Queens. It's not
- 6:34Speaker 2: the best. It's probably a low income neighborhood. And my
- 6:38Speaker 2: parents got divorced when I was eleven, so single mom,
- 6:42Speaker 2: household and yeah, so you know, money was always tight.
- 6:46Speaker 2: And I wouldn't say we didn't have food on the table,
- 6:50Speaker 2: but it's just like, as a person who didn't cook,
- 6:51Speaker 2: I would have to wait for my mom to come home,
- 6:53Speaker 2: and she would usually come home late from work and
- 6:55Speaker 2: we would get dinner. But up until then, you got
- 6:57Speaker 2: a fan for myself.
- 6:58Speaker 1: And this was the classic, the og classic. And when
- 7:03Speaker 1: you were getting these honey packers curious, it was like
- 7:06Speaker 1: you going home from school, You like, man, that cheriot
- 7:09Speaker 1: is gonna be hitting different today.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Oh yeah, absolutely absolutely, And.
- 7:12Speaker 1: So you would go and like grab your little honey
- 7:14Speaker 1: package that along the way I'm literally envisioned because.
- 7:17Speaker 2: You know, like you know, you would stop in McDonald's babies.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Sometimes you can get the happy meals. Sometimes you just
- 7:22Speaker 2: you know, steal some ketchup packages. There's some sugar, some money,
- 7:26Speaker 2: whatever you need.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Okay. So single parent, household kind of walk me towards
- 7:31Speaker 1: you becoming an entrepreneur, creator, filmmaker, producer. What is like
- 7:35Speaker 1: the first steps of like tingling in that direction.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Oh wow, so that came much later in life. I
- 7:42Speaker 2: never knew what I wanted to do, so I'll try
- 7:44Speaker 2: to speed through it because I've lived a lot of lives.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Like you know, back when I was younger, I was
- 7:52Speaker 2: kind of, you know, a knucklehead, like getting into dumb shit,
- 7:55Speaker 2: gang stuff, selling drugs, that type of bullshit. And then
- 7:59Speaker 2: but I also got straight a's in school, so it's
- 8:01Speaker 2: like I kind of like lived the double life. I
- 8:03Speaker 2: was like a nerd when I go to school and
- 8:04Speaker 2: then I come home and hang out with gangsters. So
- 8:07Speaker 2: it was just like I always just got experience to
- 8:10Speaker 2: a lot and not sure what I actually wanted to do.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Fast forward to when I started working, Like you know,
- 8:17Speaker 2: I was because I was an entrepreneur with you know,
- 8:21Speaker 2: drug stuff. I just always wanted to make money. So
- 8:24Speaker 2: it's like, even throughout high school, I was working, so
- 8:27Speaker 2: I would leave school. I had a part time job
- 8:30Speaker 2: at like kmart cafe or whatever, and then I got
- 8:33Speaker 2: a sales job. I didn't like that, but I was
- 8:36Speaker 2: making good money, like for some reason on telemarketing and
- 8:38Speaker 2: I could I could sell some cable.
- 8:40Speaker 1: So did you do you know if you liked the
- 8:45Speaker 1: idea of making money more or did you like what
- 8:48Speaker 1: you could do with the money more?
- 8:50Speaker 2: What I can do with the money. I like the freedom.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Okay, so you liked what you could buy with the
- 8:54Speaker 1: money or the freedom to do.
- 8:56Speaker 2: To do stuff that I wanted to do. Yeah, Because
- 8:58Speaker 2: it's like I lived in far Rockaway, which is like
- 9:00Speaker 2: about maybe like almost an hour and a half two
- 9:02Speaker 2: hour drive from Manhattan, but I would like to come
- 9:05Speaker 2: into Manhattan. So I hated that train ride, and so
- 9:09Speaker 2: I wanted a car. So in like sixteen, I was
- 9:12Speaker 2: able to buy myself a car. Yeah, an entrepreneur. Yeah,
- 9:16Speaker 2: So I was like driving into the city, driving all
- 9:17Speaker 2: my friends and stuff like that, getting into a bunch
- 9:19Speaker 2: of trouble, but you know, yeah, and what.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Was your mom feeling about your entrepreneurial ways in the
- 9:23Speaker 1: fact that you could manage money.
- 9:25Speaker 2: She never knew what you never knew?
- 9:27Speaker 1: So how did you get a car without her? Like figures?
- 9:30Speaker 2: I had a job, like I had the Kmart cafe.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Okay, okay, so you had got it so very smart. Okay.
- 9:38Speaker 1: So and she didn't catch on when you buy a car.
- 9:41Speaker 2: I mean, she didn't like the people I hung out with,
- 9:43Speaker 2: but like you know, I was. I didn't get in
- 9:45Speaker 2: trouble and I was get good grades and stuff like that.
- 9:49Speaker 2: So only child, No, I have an older sistant.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Oh yeah, okay, so you're doing your entrepreneur thing. What's
- 9:54Speaker 1: your first big legit entrepreneur play.
- 10:00Speaker 2: I feel like this studio is the one. Yeah, because
- 10:04Speaker 2: it's like I didn't know what I wanted to do
- 10:06Speaker 2: in life. I just knew that I wanted to be
- 10:09Speaker 2: happy doing whatever I did. So it's like I went
- 10:12Speaker 2: to college. I studied psychology at first, didn't want to
- 10:16Speaker 2: do that. Then I switched over to nursing. I actually
- 10:18Speaker 2: went to nursing school. I'm a graduated r N took
- 10:21Speaker 2: my end collects. I could be a nurse if I
- 10:23Speaker 2: wanted to, but now things expired. At this point I
- 10:26Speaker 2: didn't like nursing. Then I went to law enforcement. I
- 10:29Speaker 2: became a court officer here at Manhattan Supreme Criminal Court.
- 10:32Speaker 2: I did that for about three and a half years,
- 10:35Speaker 2: and then the editing thing was just fun. Like I
- 10:38Speaker 2: used to just do that, a fun little thing on
- 10:39Speaker 2: the side, where it's like me and my friends, we
- 10:42Speaker 2: would like go on vacations and I would tell all
- 10:44Speaker 2: of them, yo, send me a picture, send me your videos,
- 10:46Speaker 2: and now I would just like edit it together and
- 10:47Speaker 2: make us like a little promo real just so we
- 10:48Speaker 2: could throw it on MySpace or something like that. And
- 10:50Speaker 2: so I enjoyed doing that. I didn't know that was
- 10:52Speaker 2: necessarily a job. So then I just started to reach
- 10:55Speaker 2: out to people I liked and I admired. I liked
- 10:57Speaker 2: hip hop, and I liked comedy. And at the time,
- 11:01Speaker 2: Sipha Sounds he was DJ at Hot ninety seven, and
- 11:04Speaker 2: then he also was starting to do stand up, so
- 11:06Speaker 2: like I reached out to him initially because I was like, oh, hey,
- 11:08Speaker 2: I see you're pivoting to do, you know, stand up?
- 11:11Speaker 2: Is there any additional way I could help you? I
- 11:13Speaker 2: just offered help.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Wow, And that was like a DM.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Yeah, just a cold DM. And so I started following
- 11:20Speaker 2: him and first time ever picking up a camera, but
- 11:24Speaker 2: I just lied and said like, oh yeah, I know
- 11:25Speaker 2: how to use the camera and shit like that. I
- 11:27Speaker 2: just borrowed my friend's camera and was following him on
- 11:29Speaker 2: DJ sets, and then I would also film him doing
- 11:31Speaker 2: like a little bit of stand up and stuff like that.
- 11:33Speaker 2: And from there I kind of just like got better
- 11:36Speaker 2: at it and then met more people within an industry.
- 11:39Speaker 2: So then I met Andrew, and I started working alongside
- 11:41Speaker 2: with Andrew, and that around the time I met him
- 11:44Speaker 2: was when I was a court officer, so I was
- 11:47Speaker 2: like doing my court officer job. But then also I
- 11:51Speaker 2: would leave during my lunch break and film brilliant adiosts.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Wow.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Yeah, So I would have it because they the iHeart
- 11:57Speaker 2: building was like right across the street, so I would
- 11:59Speaker 2: like just take off my fucking vest and I would
- 12:01Speaker 2: still be in my uniform and shit and a runover
- 12:04Speaker 2: set up the cameras film brilliant Idiots run back. So
- 12:07Speaker 2: many times I got in trouble because I would come
- 12:09Speaker 2: back late from filming and.
- 12:11Speaker 1: You would have to be very Oh you said you
- 12:14Speaker 1: would be.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Late, yeaheah, I would be. I got in trouble quite
- 12:16Speaker 2: a bit.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Okay, Yeah, so you're doing this, At what point do
- 12:20Speaker 1: you start to say I'm making money doing this.
- 12:26Speaker 2: It got to a point where I just couldn't do both. So,
- 12:29Speaker 2: like I got good to the fact that a lot
- 12:32Speaker 2: of people were requesting my services and I just didn't
- 12:35Speaker 2: have enough time. And then like Andrew took me aside.
- 12:38Speaker 2: He's like, yo, I need a full time videographer. And
- 12:41Speaker 2: it's like Pete gave me an amount and it was
- 12:44Speaker 2: more than I was making at the time from the
- 12:46Speaker 2: court office job. And so I just left that.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Now, backtrack, before Andrew did that, how were you able
- 12:54Speaker 1: to set your rates? That had to been a process
- 12:57Speaker 1: for you too, right, that.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Was super difficult. Like I even to this day, like
- 13:01Speaker 2: I got an assistant or manager just because I don't
- 13:04Speaker 2: like to have those, So it was like whatever they offered.
- 13:08Speaker 1: So, yeah, the time you had started, you had started
- 13:11Speaker 1: doing it pro bono, right yeah. Yeah, and then like.
- 13:14Speaker 2: I wasn't even get paid. I don't think I didn't
- 13:16Speaker 2: get paid until probably working with Andrew.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Wow. Yeah, shout outs to Andrew.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you know, so sometimes white Man's good. Yeah.
- 13:28Speaker 1: So okay, so you're doing so you go full time
- 13:30Speaker 1: with Andrew, but you're still doing side stuff. I can't
- 13:33Speaker 1: imagine to go one hundred percent like.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Some things as favors, like I'm doing it, you know,
- 13:37Speaker 2: just because I admire or like the people's work, like
- 13:40Speaker 2: sometimes they would hit me off or something, but it
- 13:42Speaker 2: wasn't significant to leave my job type money.
- 13:46Speaker 1: So you were doing like more BTS for Andrew. When
- 13:49Speaker 1: do you start doing get the special or was the
- 13:51Speaker 1: special part of the package?
- 13:52Speaker 2: No, So when he brought me on to do full time,
- 13:55Speaker 2: that meant I followed him everywhere. So every single weekend
- 13:58Speaker 2: he was on the road doing I filmed every single
- 14:01Speaker 2: show and then I would edit the show down and
- 14:04Speaker 2: we would find clips that we can post because he
- 14:06Speaker 2: was one of the first comics to post a joke
- 14:08Speaker 2: a week like nobody else was doing that because it's
- 14:11Speaker 2: like they tore that same material. They don't want to
- 14:13Speaker 2: burn it. But he's like a genius when it comes
- 14:15Speaker 2: to comedy, and his crowd work is like unbelievable, So
- 14:19Speaker 2: we can use those crowd work moments because those are
- 14:22Speaker 2: you know, once in a it's only going to happen
- 14:25Speaker 2: that moment, so you can burn those. And so I
- 14:28Speaker 2: was filming. I was filming and editing Brilliant Idiots Flagrant,
- 14:33Speaker 2: following him on the road every weekend editing his stand up.
- 14:38Speaker 2: We were also doing another like vlog series and stuff
- 14:41Speaker 2: like that. So I was pumping out at one time
- 14:43Speaker 2: six hours of original content. Wow per week like filming editing.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Yeah, but you're also getting to travel on all this,
- 14:52Speaker 1: So I had like all these amazing perks.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Yeah, right, amazing. Yeah, I've seen all of America, even
- 14:57Speaker 2: the not so fun parts, go to America, I've seen
- 15:01Speaker 2: it all. And then traveled the world with him. Yeah.
- 15:03Speaker 2: It was dope.
- 15:03Speaker 1: And then how did you end up meeting him?
- 15:05Speaker 2: I think through Cyphus Sounds. He was a guest on
- 15:09Speaker 2: Cypher's podcast at the time. And then, funny enough, my
- 15:13Speaker 2: name's not actually Alex. I just chose a fake name
- 15:16Speaker 2: because I was in law enforcement and I didn't want
- 15:19Speaker 2: to get whatever I was doing outside to like get
- 15:22Speaker 2: me in any trouble, and so I chose a random name,
- 15:26Speaker 2: Alex Anderson. Just so happens, Andrew knows some comic named
- 15:30Speaker 2: Alex Anderson. So when I reached out to him via DM,
- 15:33Speaker 2: he thought he was talking to that other person that
- 15:35Speaker 2: whole time for about like four months. So we were
- 15:38Speaker 2: going back and forth, and he used to do this
- 15:40Speaker 2: thing where he's like, oh, thought of the thought of
- 15:42Speaker 2: the day or something like that. He would just like
- 15:43Speaker 2: walk around notice something and like film a front facing
- 15:46Speaker 2: video just to his ig stories of like funny take
- 15:50Speaker 2: on that thing. Every day I would grab it, edit it,
- 15:54Speaker 2: send it back to him and like, oh what do
- 15:55Speaker 2: you think of This just annoyed him for about like
- 15:58Speaker 2: maybe two months doing that shit, and he would like respond,
- 16:00Speaker 2: He's like, oh I like it, Oh tweak this, But
- 16:02Speaker 2: then he would never post it. I'm like, why are
- 16:04Speaker 2: you doing this? You're never going to use the fucking ship,
- 16:07Speaker 2: but you like it. He thought he was talking to
- 16:08Speaker 2: his friend that holds up.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Wow, that's why he wasn't posting it.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Yeah, that's crazy. Yeah. So then when we finally met
- 16:16Speaker 2: in person on Seipha's podcast, I was like, oh, yeah,
- 16:19Speaker 2: I'm Alex. You've been talking to He's like, so we
- 16:26Speaker 2: just have a funny laugh after that, and then he
- 16:27Speaker 2: was like, oh shit, I know, like this is what
- 16:29Speaker 2: you do.
- 16:30Speaker 1: And so then he was like all them times, these
- 16:32Speaker 1: videos I could have been using it. That's incredible. I
- 16:37Speaker 1: think a lot of people think money, money, money, But
- 16:39Speaker 1: it's just funny how like indirectly you pursuing like a
- 16:42Speaker 1: passion project ended up, you know, redirecting your past.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Yeah. I just never like to do anything I don't
- 16:50Speaker 2: want to do, and I've been blessed enough where i
- 16:54Speaker 2: haven't had to do it for that long. So like jobs,
- 16:56Speaker 2: I didn't like it, I just wouldn't stay very long.
- 16:59Speaker 1: Yeah, well you pivoted out really really. Wait, I learned
- 17:03Speaker 1: that about waitressing and fast food when I was like
- 17:05Speaker 1: a teenager. I said, oh, these are two industries you
- 17:07Speaker 1: can't be and I knew right away. I said, you
- 17:10Speaker 1: have to you have to be successful at something because
- 17:12Speaker 1: this right here is not your thing.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Yeah. But and like court officer was like a glorified
- 17:20Speaker 2: security guard and no offense to the job. But it's
- 17:22Speaker 2: like it was just so boring, Like it's like I'm
- 17:25Speaker 2: just literally standing there telling people shut up, take your
- 17:27Speaker 2: hat off, quiet down, like for eight hours.
- 17:30Speaker 1: I can't even imagine you're doing that.
- 17:32Speaker 2: Oh yeah, you.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Gotta send us like a throwback pick though.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I think I still got one up on
- 17:37Speaker 2: my Instagram scrollback.
- 17:40Speaker 1: Okay, so then at what point does so you're you're
- 17:43Speaker 1: growing with Flavorant. Now Flavorant are you a founding member
- 17:46Speaker 1: of Flagrant?
- 17:47Speaker 2: So I started it with them, but I only started
- 17:49Speaker 2: as production.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Yeah, so I'd end up on the other side.
- 17:52Speaker 2: It was honestly, I just got close with the guys
- 17:55Speaker 2: because I would see him so often and we would
- 17:58Speaker 2: have great banter. So I have extreme stage right, Like,
- 18:03Speaker 2: if you put me in front of a group of
- 18:04Speaker 2: people ask me to talk, I'm gonna have a panic
- 18:06Speaker 2: at Like, I don't like it. I don't like attention,
- 18:08Speaker 2: even this is low whatever, but I've gotten better at it.
- 18:11Speaker 2: So they just noticed, or I guess they saw something
- 18:13Speaker 2: in me where it's like, oh, you know, like he
- 18:15Speaker 2: has good things to offer to the show. So they
- 18:19Speaker 2: just added a mic in the room. So even though
- 18:21Speaker 2: I'm behind the cameras, they just had given me my
- 18:24Speaker 2: own mic. So if I added anything to the conversation, like,
- 18:26Speaker 2: feel free to do it. And so it was just
- 18:28Speaker 2: like a slow roll into it to the point where
- 18:31Speaker 2: it's like I became a voice on the show. And
- 18:34Speaker 2: then yeah, and then Andrew was just like, yo, it's time.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Stop stop hiding.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Yeah time, I love that.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I love your guys. Dynamic. I feel like he's
- 18:44Speaker 1: definitely like one believes in you and just keeps throwing like, oh.
- 18:48Speaker 2: Yeah, he's an awesome guy. He's misunderstood to a lot
- 18:52Speaker 2: of people, but he's he's an awesome person.
- 18:54Speaker 1: He means well, I can see that.
- 18:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:56Speaker 1: I don't know though, but I can see it. I
- 18:58Speaker 1: can see you know, you could tell a lot of
- 19:00Speaker 1: about people by like who they surround themselves with. And
- 19:02Speaker 1: he's surrounded with Charlemagne and everybody. You're like, okay, you good,
- 19:06Speaker 1: good people good. Yeah, you know what I'm saying. You
- 19:09Speaker 1: gotta give it. So where does WTF end up coming in?
- 19:12Speaker 2: Okay? So then so I'm working for him full time
- 19:17Speaker 2: where traveling, and then the pandemic happens, and so now
- 19:21Speaker 2: half of my work is cut because we can all
- 19:24Speaker 2: longer travel, he can't do shows, and so I'm like,
- 19:26Speaker 2: oh shit, this is a big monetary hit. Yeah, and
- 19:30Speaker 2: I'm like I need to come up with, you know,
- 19:32Speaker 2: something else, another revenue stream and then something that's like
- 19:36Speaker 2: COVID proof. So this like this came to me where
- 19:40Speaker 2: it's like, hey, working with him, I've had to figure
- 19:44Speaker 2: out how to do everything because we would just shoot
- 19:46Speaker 2: stuff guerrilla style where it's just like, hey, we're gonna
- 19:49Speaker 2: do a commercial shoot, we need this is this figure
- 19:53Speaker 2: it out? And so then I had to learn lights,
- 19:55Speaker 2: I had to learn audio, I had to learn camera.
- 19:57Speaker 2: I had to learn editing and how you learn YouTube
- 20:00Speaker 2: and stuff YouTube. Yeah, YouTube University for the most part,
- 20:03Speaker 2: and just trial and error. I definitely made some mistakes.
- 20:06Speaker 2: Document the mistakes of like me fucking up audio and
- 20:09Speaker 2: past episodes of Flagrant and just like not just missing something,
- 20:12Speaker 2: or like if a power line is touching an audio line,
- 20:16Speaker 2: you get this little buzzing in Yeah.
- 20:18Speaker 1: We had that at our studios. It is we'd be like,
- 20:20Speaker 1: unplug everything.
- 20:22Speaker 2: The power line is touching an audio line, you get
- 20:25Speaker 2: a buzz.
- 20:25Speaker 1: And mother, that's what you just cured. So many problems
- 20:29Speaker 1: for our studio right now. They'd be like, RACOLLI replace
- 20:33Speaker 1: the XLRS. Replace it. I'm like, yo, I don't think
- 20:36Speaker 1: it's the XLRS. They just don't just wake up one
- 20:38Speaker 1: day and say we're expired.
- 20:40Speaker 2: You know, a lot of it was just trialing error
- 20:43Speaker 2: and then I just got good. And so the idea
- 20:45Speaker 2: was like, hey, I been We've had to shoot our
- 20:49Speaker 2: podcast at so many studios that were shiit like really
- 20:52Speaker 2: just like bad customer service, poor conditions. I can do
- 20:55Speaker 2: this better, and so I basically emptied out my savings,
- 20:58Speaker 2: took out a little business loan, and I first spoke
- 21:02Speaker 2: about the I spoke about the idea with Weezy because, like,
- 21:05Speaker 2: Weezy's like one of my best friends.
- 21:08Speaker 1: Let me just tell you I'm not gay or anything,
- 21:10Speaker 1: but if I had like a choice to be gay,
- 21:13Speaker 1: Weezy would be my number one.
- 21:15Speaker 2: I mean she's by though, you know what.
- 21:17Speaker 1: I'm saying, Like if God forbid, like it would never happen,
- 21:21Speaker 1: like one hundred percent would never happen. You're straight all
- 21:24Speaker 1: the way. But like if someone was like, you have
- 21:27Speaker 1: to Weezy personality, Weezy on everything. Personality of course supersedes
- 21:32Speaker 1: her looks. Honestly, Weezy would be my number one.
- 21:36Speaker 2: She's my best tie. But that ship out of it,
- 21:38Speaker 2: I could like was.
- 21:41Speaker 1: She was my favorite episode of Eating While Broke and
- 21:44Speaker 1: we've done five seasons. There's another girl that now rivals her,
- 21:48Speaker 1: but Weezy. If people would be like, who's your favorite episode,
- 21:51Speaker 1: I'd be like, Wheezy, Wheezy's my fuck favorite.
- 21:55Speaker 2: Hopefully this hope, but probably not your story.
- 22:00Speaker 1: He has stories, yeah, like stalkers and ship like I
- 22:05Speaker 1: had so many problems after her episode.
- 22:07Speaker 2: I was like, oh really bad. Oh yeah that we
- 22:11Speaker 2: have a bad stalker guy and yeah, talk about it.
- 22:14Speaker 1: But no, so I wanted to hear this, this story
- 22:17Speaker 1: about how you and weazy so you hit up wheezy.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Yeah. So, And this is funny that we're having this
- 22:22Speaker 2: conversation now because I was talking with this comic last
- 22:24Speaker 2: night Alex Babbitt, funny guy, and we were like it
- 22:27Speaker 2: was like a therapy session. He's like, you know, why
- 22:30Speaker 2: do you think you have this stage fright or whatever?
- 22:31Speaker 2: And it's like I couldn't figure it out. And eventually,
- 22:35Speaker 2: long story short, we got to the point is I'm
- 22:37Speaker 2: afraid of failing, and then I'm afraid of failing in
- 22:39Speaker 2: front of people. That makes it worse. So it's like, wow,
- 22:43Speaker 2: that's deep.
- 22:44Speaker 1: That was all in want.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, like we we was going in it
- 22:47Speaker 2: and I really think that's the thing. It's like I
- 22:50Speaker 2: don't like to fail, Like I like to do things
- 22:52Speaker 2: that I feel confident or passionate about because then I
- 22:55Speaker 2: put my effort into it, and talking in front of people,
- 22:59Speaker 2: I don't feel confidence, so I never attempt to do it,
- 23:02Speaker 2: and it makes it even scarier because I'm like, oh,
- 23:04Speaker 2: I'm going to fuck up and say something wrong in
- 23:07Speaker 2: front of people.
- 23:08Speaker 1: And then it's like, yeah, So I remember the first
- 23:10Speaker 1: time I met you, like four years ago, you did
- 23:13Speaker 1: seem very shy.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:17Speaker 1: I don't even know how we did it. I think
- 23:19Speaker 1: I said something to you. Maybe you're promoting WTF. But
- 23:23Speaker 1: I got your number, but you were very shy. I
- 23:25Speaker 1: was shy to at the time, but you were shy.
- 23:27Speaker 2: I'm still shy now. I just I've gotten a bit more,
- 23:30Speaker 2: especially being in front of the camera a bit more
- 23:32Speaker 2: with Flagrant. I've gotten a little bit more comfortable. But yeah,
- 23:36Speaker 2: I'm still the shy, introvert guy that liked to just
- 23:39Speaker 2: be behind the computer screen. That's my comfort zone.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Okay, So take us back to you and weezy.
- 23:45Speaker 2: Okay, So we were drunk on a beach. I tell
- 23:48Speaker 2: her about the idea. I only feel comfortable telling her.
- 23:51Speaker 2: I don't know why. I guess I'm just comfortable enough
- 23:53Speaker 2: with her. And I knew that because she works in
- 23:57Speaker 2: the industry, she would have like ideas that can make
- 24:01Speaker 2: this thing better. And then I'm like, you know what,
- 24:03Speaker 2: I'm afraid of not being able to do this shit,
- 24:07Speaker 2: Come and do it with me, and so I really
- 24:10Speaker 2: just like I need you to help me, like make
- 24:14Speaker 2: this dream come true because I don't think I have
- 24:17Speaker 2: the capability to do it myself.
- 24:19Speaker 1: Wow. Yeah, and that's what you said to.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Her, Yeah, something, But we were talking to Beach, so
- 24:23Speaker 2: probably it wasn't as.
- 24:24Speaker 1: It's interesting that you said that because you're the one
- 24:26Speaker 1: that had the idea, you had the the seed in you.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Yeah, but then you had and you clearly were going
- 24:34Speaker 1: to go on this track, but you just wanted a
- 24:36Speaker 1: partner to Yeah.
- 24:38Speaker 2: And then also it's like she has so many like
- 24:42Speaker 2: qualities that I lack, like being able to just put
- 24:45Speaker 2: yourself out there and out going, like she's great with promotion, marketing,
- 24:50Speaker 2: all that type of stuff. Me I I just want
- 24:52Speaker 2: to be the guy who connects a bunch of cameras
- 24:54Speaker 2: and lights and hope, you know, we can get a
- 24:56Speaker 2: good picture on screen and fill.
- 24:58Speaker 1: The space, right yeah. Yeah. Because also it's a significant
- 25:01Speaker 1: investment if you started in New York, right, Oh yeah,
- 25:04Speaker 1: it's versus La La La. There's some negotiations, but New
- 25:07Speaker 1: York is definitely.
- 25:08Speaker 2: Yeah, it's rough, but yeah, we and it was just
- 25:11Speaker 2: an ideal during COVID.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Yeah, so then what's your next play? After that?
- 25:16Speaker 2: It was just perfect timing because it's like COVID, everybody's
- 25:19Speaker 2: home podcast boom is happening, so now everybody wants to
- 25:23Speaker 2: get into podcasting. So it took off after the first studio,
- 25:27Speaker 2: like within six months, we needed a second one, and
- 25:29Speaker 2: now we're like up to five in New York. And
- 25:33Speaker 2: then we have one.
- 25:34Speaker 1: We're five in New York. Yeah, how how could I
- 25:37Speaker 1: not get an extra studio?
- 25:40Speaker 2: Five in New York?
- 25:42Speaker 1: Where are the other locations?
- 25:43Speaker 2: So it's like each set I would consider one, so
- 25:47Speaker 2: this will count. And then Midtown we have two and now.
- 25:50Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah that's right, Okay, yes, you're right.
- 25:53Speaker 2: And then we just got another space in Midtown opening up.
- 25:56Speaker 2: And this one, I like, I tried something new, so
- 25:59Speaker 2: you know, like a white psych or like a white wall.
- 26:02Speaker 2: It looks like just an infinity room, So I just
- 26:05Speaker 2: built that inside of a studio.
- 26:07Speaker 1: Wow.
- 26:07Speaker 2: And then I have it like all set up for podcasting, commercials,
- 26:11Speaker 2: all that stuff. And I'm excited about this because white
- 26:15Speaker 2: Sykes you usually have to pay per thing so it's
- 26:19Speaker 2: like you can rent the space, but then you have
- 26:21Speaker 2: to pay extra for lights, you have to pay extra
- 26:23Speaker 2: for cameras, extra for audio. By the time you do that,
- 26:25Speaker 2: it's like maybe one thousand dollars for an hour. I'm
- 26:27Speaker 2: gonna do the same thing but offer it at like
- 26:29Speaker 2: four hundred dolls. So I'm just gonna undercut the whole industry.
- 26:32Speaker 2: And now you're probably.
- 26:33Speaker 1: You're gonna you're gonna be like, what app was it?
- 26:36Speaker 1: I what is it?
- 26:39Speaker 2: Steve?
- 26:39Speaker 1: When they used to steal Yeah, yeah, iTunes or whatever,
- 26:43Speaker 1: You're like, you're gonna do it again, but in video
- 26:46Speaker 1: and audio. I like that. Yeah. I used to always
- 26:51Speaker 1: wonder though, because you guys have such big, big names.
- 26:54Speaker 1: This is probably messed to ask on camera. But you
- 26:57Speaker 1: have so many you have people like my company that's
- 27:00Speaker 1: very small, and then you have some big talent right
- 27:02Speaker 1: that comes in. Do they all end up paying the
- 27:04Speaker 1: same price?
- 27:04Speaker 2: Yeah, And that was a thing that you know, I
- 27:08Speaker 2: wouldn't say we argued about, but we definitely went back
- 27:10Speaker 2: and forth, and I was like, you know, I want
- 27:12Speaker 2: to keep prices down because I definitely want our people
- 27:15Speaker 2: to be able to, you know, use the studio and yeah,
- 27:20Speaker 2: Like I just wanted accessible for everybody, and I think
- 27:23Speaker 2: that's part of why we're so busy. It's because, yeah,
- 27:26Speaker 2: it's affordable. I should rent this out for a lot more.
- 27:30Speaker 2: But I want everybody to be able to And I
- 27:33Speaker 2: personally feel good that It's like I'm providing a space
- 27:35Speaker 2: for people to, you know, try to do something and
- 27:39Speaker 2: if they take if their show takes off, it's like
- 27:41Speaker 2: that shit started here. It's like dope. And I've had
- 27:43Speaker 2: a lot of success stories of people signing pretty big
- 27:45Speaker 2: deals after they started here.
- 27:47Speaker 1: Oh please let that. Yeah, even though I was very lucky,
- 27:52Speaker 1: I did a similar thing with Dolly at La La
- 27:55Speaker 1: So I had told her during pandemic, I was doing
- 27:58Speaker 1: a legal activity with weed or whatever. Yeah, her my
- 28:02Speaker 1: company like crashed and burned, like personally of COVID, Like
- 28:05Speaker 1: I had an events company that was like the second
- 28:07Speaker 1: the NBA canceled, it was over. So I was doing
- 28:10Speaker 1: like terrible stuff. We lost a crazy amount of money.
- 28:15Speaker 1: Don't even like thinking about it. But I also followed
- 28:18Speaker 1: SBA loans, so I'm still paying board. But anyways, I
- 28:21Speaker 1: had called Dolly and I was like, I want to
- 28:23Speaker 1: do the show eating while broke but I had been
- 28:25Speaker 1: out the industry for like ten years, and I was like, yo,
- 28:28Speaker 1: you're still doing walling out this now? Mind you. Nick
- 28:30Speaker 1: was also getting canceled for wilding out at the time,
- 28:33Speaker 1: for the jew comments whatever, So I call her up like, yo,
- 28:36Speaker 1: I don't even know if I have industry contacts anymore. Whatever,
- 28:39Speaker 1: fuck with me for real. So since you just left
- 28:41Speaker 1: walling out and you probably had more plugs, you come
- 28:44Speaker 1: on board eating while broke this idea, I have, not
- 28:48Speaker 1: knowing that Charlemagne was like within six months of that
- 28:51Speaker 1: conversation making her president of Black effect to which on
- 28:55Speaker 1: a call, you know, and you see the snowball effect
- 28:57Speaker 1: of like right place, right time. But I went I
- 29:00Speaker 1: do the same thing kind of that you went through
- 29:02Speaker 1: with Wheezy, where it was like, look, I may have
- 29:04Speaker 1: a negative part. And I'm also shy about the fact
- 29:08Speaker 1: that I had been out the game so long and
- 29:09Speaker 1: then to come back and be like, hey, I want
- 29:11Speaker 1: to do this show. And by the way, guys, I'm
- 29:13Speaker 1: gonna be on the other side of the camera that
- 29:15Speaker 1: you would never expect me to be on. So you know,
- 29:18Speaker 1: it's nobody had faith I could do it or whatever.
- 29:22Speaker 2: Was it scary for you.
- 29:24Speaker 1: It was mainly scary because Dolly was like, Yo, we
- 29:26Speaker 1: should have pretty V doing and I was like, I
- 29:29Speaker 1: like pretty V. But this show needs to be real stories,
- 29:33Speaker 1: like it can't be gimmicky. We're not making fun of
- 29:35Speaker 1: this place. We're inspiring from this place. Yeah, and so
- 29:38Speaker 1: I was like, it's gonna have to be me and
- 29:41Speaker 1: I been I was pregnant and Dolly was like absolute,
- 29:45Speaker 1: not only are you going to first time, but you're
- 29:47Speaker 1: gonna be pregnant. I was like, Cardi B's rapping on
- 29:49Speaker 1: stage right now with a belly, Like I'm thank God
- 29:52Speaker 1: for Cardi B. And she flew in and was like,
- 29:55Speaker 1: we're gonna see if you can do this. And that
- 29:58Speaker 1: was scary because Dolly showed up and I was like,
- 30:02Speaker 1: scare And then she said right after I was done,
- 30:07Speaker 1: she was like, this is you. This is where you're
- 30:09Speaker 1: supposed to be at and I was like what and
- 30:11Speaker 1: she was like you you can stay.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Oh that's awesome, And I was like, yeah, that's awesome.
- 30:16Speaker 2: I'm about to embark on that journey as well. So
- 30:19Speaker 2: it's like now my next move, I'm working on a
- 30:21Speaker 2: show for myself. Yeah. So it's like we all see
- 30:26Speaker 2: the discourse online. It's like it's so polarizing, and so
- 30:28Speaker 2: this side versus that side, and it's like everybody's in
- 30:31Speaker 2: their echo chambers and stuff like that, and I don't
- 30:33Speaker 2: feel that's a good representation of what people really are.
- 30:37Speaker 2: And so this show it's like a play on old
- 30:40Speaker 2: school radio where it's just like you know, the call
- 30:42Speaker 2: in radio. You have a topic and then everybody calls
- 30:45Speaker 2: and tells us how they feel about it. But now
- 30:46Speaker 2: it's like my new age take to it is you
- 30:48Speaker 2: have to show your face, so there's no hiding behind everything.
- 30:50Speaker 2: It's all video call So it's a live show, a
- 30:54Speaker 2: live show.
- 30:54Speaker 1: Every live show live.
- 30:56Speaker 2: So I do it on YouTube every Sunday eleven o'clock
- 31:00Speaker 2: and then if you want to call in, you have
- 31:01Speaker 2: to sign up to a Patreon. So it's like I
- 31:03Speaker 2: want you to be invested if you actually want to,
- 31:06Speaker 2: you know, give your take or whatever. But everybody can
- 31:09Speaker 2: watch your free It's but it's so fun.
- 31:11Speaker 1: I get you already started it.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I've been like doing practice episodes. So here's another thing.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Afraid to fail. I've been doing practice episodes maybe like
- 31:19Speaker 2: a couple of months now, and it's like the show
- 31:21Speaker 2: is rated. I think it's amazing, and I'm just so
- 31:24Speaker 2: nervous to like announce it publicly. And here's probably the
- 31:27Speaker 2: first place that I'm talking about it publicly right now.
- 31:30Speaker 2: And so I'm nervous in this book.
- 31:32Speaker 1: Oh when you let me know when the weeks we
- 31:35Speaker 1: sign it.
- 31:35Speaker 2: But it's called A m Mornings, I probably should see.
- 31:38Speaker 1: It's crazy with all your success that you still have
- 31:40Speaker 1: this bug in you.
- 31:42Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I like just doing stuff new and that
- 31:45Speaker 2: excites me. If if I don't, if I'm not excited,
- 31:48Speaker 2: or if I don't want to do anything, I have
- 31:51Speaker 2: the luxury that I don't have to do it.
- 31:54Speaker 1: No, the bug I was talking about is that fair? Bud?
- 31:57Speaker 2: Oh? The fair?
- 31:57Speaker 1: Because you would think you would think that with all
- 31:59Speaker 1: your leads, you would say, okay, you don't have the fear,
- 32:02Speaker 1: especially even now that you've been on the other side
- 32:04Speaker 1: of the couch, you've been on the flagrant that you've
- 32:06Speaker 1: been on this side, right, Yeah, but you still have
- 32:09Speaker 1: that like scared to release fear of failure in front
- 32:12Speaker 1: of people.
- 32:12Speaker 2: Yes, so flagrant. It's an easier lift for me because
- 32:16Speaker 2: it's almost like I can imagine the cameras aren't there,
- 32:18Speaker 2: and I'm just talking with my friends that I've been
- 32:20Speaker 2: friends with over ten years now, and also Andrew and Akosh.
- 32:24Speaker 2: They're the big stars, like they drive the show. Like
- 32:27Speaker 2: I'm kind of there, you know, supplementary to them driving
- 32:32Speaker 2: the show, and so I don't feel that I have
- 32:34Speaker 2: to drive it. So it's like a lot less pressure
- 32:36Speaker 2: on me. This one. It's like, oh shit, I'm doing
- 32:39Speaker 2: a show. I'm the host. And it's like, so that's
- 32:42Speaker 2: why it's it's nerve racking.
- 32:43Speaker 1: Where do you tape your show up?
- 32:45Speaker 2: At my studio?
- 32:46Speaker 1: Here?
- 32:47Speaker 2: The Midtown one. Okay, you should see the new set.
- 32:49Speaker 1: The new set is Oh, I gotta go see. I
- 32:51Speaker 1: want to try and see it before I least the white.
- 32:53Speaker 2: Cycle and I have another side that looks so dope. Yeah.
- 32:57Speaker 2: I just each set, I just keep making better. I
- 32:59Speaker 2: love it.
- 32:59Speaker 1: I love it well, I love it all right. So
- 33:03Speaker 1: I was so you and Weezy. I thought you guys
- 33:07Speaker 1: had met through horrible, but it sounds like you guys
- 33:10Speaker 1: had a long.
- 33:11Speaker 2: Oh no, we actually we met through horrible. Yeah. I
- 33:13Speaker 2: met her because she was trying to get signed with
- 33:16Speaker 2: loud Speaker, which Brilliant Idiots is also under it's owned
- 33:20Speaker 2: by like Chris Murrow, and so I just bumped into
- 33:24Speaker 2: her and Mandy when they were like waiting to have
- 33:27Speaker 2: a meeting and they were talking with other people about
- 33:29Speaker 2: their show. So I'm just like overhearing, I was like,
- 33:32Speaker 2: oh shit, the concept this is fire, Like I can
- 33:36Speaker 2: spot good content. And at the time, they were only
- 33:41Speaker 2: doing audio, and I was like, guys, this has to
- 33:44Speaker 2: be video, Like you have to add the video component.
- 33:47Speaker 2: And they were like, well, you know, one money time
- 33:50Speaker 2: all that type of stuff. I was like, you have
- 33:51Speaker 2: to do video. Let me provide video for you. And
- 33:55Speaker 2: the first couple months I was working for him, I
- 33:57Speaker 2: was barely getting paid. So that's one of those things
- 33:59Speaker 2: where it's like even at the time I was doing jobs,
- 34:01Speaker 2: I was doing that for free or I think maybe
- 34:04Speaker 2: I was getting fifty dollars some low amount. But yeah.
- 34:07Speaker 2: But then at some point video to their show and
- 34:08Speaker 2: then their show like four x stoor like four hundred
- 34:12Speaker 2: x some.
- 34:12Speaker 1: Crazy number of course, because now you have the beautiful faces.
- 34:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm like, people need to know that.
- 34:16Speaker 1: What I thought was interesting and I thought about this
- 34:18Speaker 1: with your story was at some point you guys separate,
- 34:21Speaker 1: Oh yeah, and I think what I saw from it
- 34:24Speaker 1: as an outsider was like you established your worth, right,
- 34:27Speaker 1: you established the value you bring and then there was
- 34:29Speaker 1: obviously a disagreement, whether it was pay or or whatever.
- 34:33Speaker 2: I asked for fifty.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Dollars fifty dollars more. I love that you did it
- 34:37Speaker 1: and risk walking away because I think sometimes that triples
- 34:40Speaker 1: your value where people go. You could try to head
- 34:43Speaker 1: your bets with someone that costs less, but are they
- 34:45Speaker 1: gonna one care about it? Are they going to have
- 34:47Speaker 1: enough integrity to really care about the end product, which
- 34:49Speaker 1: you always do, Like even in my studio, we don't
- 34:53Speaker 1: have these cameras. You know what I'm saying. These cameras
- 34:55Speaker 1: are like ten times what you even know.
- 34:58Speaker 2: I like detail out like quality.
- 35:00Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, but I think that it said a lot
- 35:03Speaker 1: when you walked because it also showed that they it developed,
- 35:07Speaker 1: like we need him right and did you see that?
- 35:11Speaker 2: I did see it, and you know not, you know,
- 35:14Speaker 2: there's still my friend. But it's funny because you know,
- 35:16Speaker 2: after I stepped away, they were the show didn't look
- 35:19Speaker 2: as good. But yeah, but they figured it out, they
- 35:24Speaker 2: rebound it. They're great there. I'm actually working back with
- 35:27Speaker 2: them now. But now I'm there creative director instead of
- 35:31Speaker 2: the producer. Okay, yeah, okay, yeah, but yeah, like and
- 35:35Speaker 2: I guess it's just just how I operate, Like I
- 35:39Speaker 2: go by energy. If something feels good, I stay there.
- 35:41Speaker 2: If it doesn't feel good out Okay, I've never been
- 35:44Speaker 2: afraid to leave something.
- 35:45Speaker 1: Do you think the fear of I wouldn't. I don't know.
- 35:49Speaker 1: Obviously you had your therapy session. You're saying, but you
- 35:53Speaker 1: say fear of failure as an entrepreneur at this point,
- 35:57Speaker 1: do you really categorize it as like a fear of failure.
- 36:01Speaker 1: I can't understand the fear of failure in front of others.
- 36:03Speaker 1: I get that, I get that, but the fear of
- 36:05Speaker 1: failure as an entrepreneur if you've succeeded so.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Much, I mean, this ship could stop any moment. Like
- 36:13Speaker 2: I never feel like I did it, you know, because
- 36:16Speaker 2: it's like, hey, what if people just stop wanting the podcast?
- 36:20Speaker 2: You know, I'm kind of fucked. But yeah, like I
- 36:24Speaker 2: I think doing it, I'm more it's less fear for
- 36:30Speaker 2: me to try other like entrepreneurial you know, task like
- 36:35Speaker 2: I I can start a business. I probably have seven
- 36:39Speaker 2: businesses right now.
- 36:41Speaker 1: Awesome, that's pretty good though, it's really good. It's good
- 36:44Speaker 1: at juggling and delegating. Yes, So what were what would
- 36:47Speaker 1: what would you say are the key things that keep
- 36:49Speaker 1: you on top of the surfboard?
- 36:52Speaker 2: First would say, if you're with someone, have an amazing partner.
- 36:57Speaker 2: My fiance is phenomenal. She makes me a better person,
- 37:01Speaker 2: so that's great. And then your team, Like I have
- 37:04Speaker 2: a great assistant, he keeps me. He's probably the person
- 37:07Speaker 2: you've been talking to in emails because I just give
- 37:09Speaker 2: a passwords yeah Texas VI Texas.
- 37:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 37:12Speaker 2: But if you're talking in emails, it's not me most
- 37:15Speaker 2: of the time. But yeah, And it's just like, yeah,
- 37:17Speaker 2: just have a good team around you and surround yourself
- 37:20Speaker 2: with good people, good energy, like the same way. I've
- 37:23Speaker 2: learned so much from Charlotte and Andrew. They've had the
- 37:26Speaker 2: same good people around them like for the longest and
- 37:29Speaker 2: that's part of their success. And so I just I
- 37:32Speaker 2: see them do something and it works. I'm same.
- 37:34Speaker 1: What about cash flow and budgeting money stuff?
- 37:38Speaker 2: So I've had to learn that because coming out of
- 37:41Speaker 2: the regular corporate American world, it was like, you know,
- 37:44Speaker 2: you have a guarantee check whatever the case is. The
- 37:47Speaker 2: taxes get taken out and all that stuff. I remember
- 37:49Speaker 2: the first year where I was officially like working as
- 37:52Speaker 2: a contractor and not like a nine to five. I
- 37:56Speaker 2: wasn't putting money away for taxes, and then that first
- 37:58Speaker 2: tax bill, I was like, oh shit, like that was
- 38:01Speaker 2: a shock. Gotten a lot better at that now, but yeah, like,
- 38:06Speaker 2: thankfully this studio is working. Thankfully, Flagrance doing phenomenal where
- 38:11Speaker 2: I'm pretty comfortable and like now I'm able to like
- 38:14Speaker 2: have a little fun because it's like before it was
- 38:17Speaker 2: just for ten years straight, I just had my head
- 38:18Speaker 2: down and I was working.
- 38:20Speaker 1: But how do you balance the cash flow and the
- 38:22Speaker 1: growth of the companies with employees and payroll and all that.
- 38:25Speaker 2: So with we have like team that does all the accounting,
- 38:29Speaker 2: payroll and all that stuff. But another thing I'm really
- 38:31Speaker 2: proud about at WTF, like we pay more than everybody.
- 38:35Speaker 2: Like I've I wouldn't say recruited people, but there'd be
- 38:39Speaker 2: people that worked at other podcast studios that came here
- 38:41Speaker 2: and they're like, holy should I make double working there?
- 38:44Speaker 2: And it's like I have some engineers that made six figures. Wow, Yeah,
- 38:48Speaker 2: that's so amazing. Yeah, And like in New York you
- 38:51Speaker 2: need to make some money to survive in this state.
- 38:54Speaker 2: But yeah, we just luckily with the success of the
- 38:57Speaker 2: first one first studio. I mean we've I haven't had
- 39:02Speaker 2: to like get any outside money, any outside funding. We
- 39:06Speaker 2: just paid off the studio, made more money, opened another
- 39:10Speaker 2: studio with that money, and so we're just doing it slow.
- 39:13Speaker 2: If we were to get like a investor, we can
- 39:16Speaker 2: probably open up ten studios tomorrow. But I like it
- 39:19Speaker 2: going out of space.
- 39:20Speaker 1: Yeah, stay still, yeah, okay, well, where can everybody keep
- 39:24Speaker 1: up everything Alex? Which, by the way, I I've always
- 39:28Speaker 1: liked Alex. I like this extra X on it. I
- 39:33Speaker 1: literally always think about it whatever I see. I like
- 39:35Speaker 1: the extra ex makes so much sense, and like, what
- 39:38Speaker 1: a creative mom, only to find out that the mom
- 39:41Speaker 1: doesn't exist. I like the brand. I love it, and
- 39:47Speaker 1: the whole Alex media is just so nice awesome.
- 39:51Speaker 2: But now I know everybody knows me as Alex. Now,
- 39:55Speaker 2: like the only people will call them my real neighbor
- 39:57Speaker 2: is my mom and maybe a couple of my best
- 39:58Speaker 2: friends from childhood. No, she calls me Alex. She met
- 40:02Speaker 2: me as Alex. That's crazy.
- 40:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I like when it's funny because now I was
- 40:07Speaker 1: talking to my little brother Eagle. He's like, I know, Alan,
- 40:10Speaker 1: you know my little I was like, I don't think
- 40:11Speaker 1: he knows what we're related.
- 40:12Speaker 2: He's like, I did not know you were related.
- 40:14Speaker 1: He was my little brother and he was like.
- 40:16Speaker 2: The comedian right, yeah, I did not know.
- 40:18Speaker 1: Whenever people find out and I'm like the wits, the wit,
- 40:24Speaker 1: but yeah, yes, I call him. I describe him as
- 40:28Speaker 1: the guy that he just surprisingly hasn't gotten canceled yet.
- 40:32Speaker 1: He straddles that fan so well. He straddles that one
- 40:35Speaker 1: you know, the one wheel bike. He straddles it and
- 40:37Speaker 1: you're like, oh, somehow missed it.
- 40:39Speaker 2: Those people I love to be around the right there.
- 40:45Speaker 1: They just and you love to watch it because it's
- 40:48Speaker 1: like so great. But you're like, so maw, he's made
- 40:52Speaker 1: it out. Yeah so but and Thensama was like Alex yeah,
- 40:56Speaker 1: And I was like, yeah, I finally get to sit
- 40:58Speaker 1: down with him. But they thank you so much for
- 41:01Speaker 1: sitting down and having some cheerios with me. Yes, og classic,
- 41:04Speaker 1: and I hope to get a picture from you later.
- 41:07Speaker 2: It's honey with honey nut cheerios, It's sugar with frusted flakes,
- 41:11Speaker 2: and it's cinnamon with cinnamon toe.
- 41:12Speaker 1: Scrunch cinnamon on extra cinnamon on the cinnamon to scrunch.
- 41:16Speaker 1: Now cinnamon and sugar.
- 41:17Speaker 2: Na, Actually I would do cinnamon and.
- 41:18Speaker 1: Sugar, but now too in the containers. Now really you
- 41:22Speaker 1: can get the cinnamon sugar.
- 41:23Speaker 2: Mane Oh shit, see I should have invented that.
- 41:28Speaker 1: All right, guys, thank you so much for tuning into
- 41:30Speaker 1: another episode of Eating while broke. Keep up with everything
- 41:33Speaker 1: alex media and can you shout out the new show? Oh?
