- 0:27Speaker 1: for every hunt first like go farther, stay longer, all right, everybody,
- 0:36Speaker 1: super special guests singer songwriter Dustin Huff who also might
- 0:44Speaker 1: be known you like that just playing up? Singer song
- 0:50Speaker 1: who happens to have who happens to be the new
- 0:56Speaker 1: typical white tail record holder. Yep, I gotta get lucky sometimes, dude,
- 1:05Speaker 1: it's a big deal. Yeah, it's been nuts, man, This
- 1:08Speaker 1: past six months been crazy. Here you guys sitting with
- 1:10Speaker 1: a huff Buck T shirt on you like never like
- 1:13Speaker 1: a dude of the buck named after. Never thought that
- 1:15Speaker 1: deer hunting would turn into a business. Uh, we are
- 1:22Speaker 1: like your your friends with Luke Combs, and Luke contacted
- 1:26Speaker 1: me one night, texted me one night being like holy shit. Yeah,
- 1:33Speaker 1: and at the time, you guys thought it was a
- 1:34Speaker 1: state record. Yeah, we just thought it was state hm
- 1:39Speaker 1: m m. Yeah. He called me at two in the
- 1:42Speaker 1: morning the night I killed it. I assume he was
- 1:44Speaker 1: getting on bus call after a tour and I had
- 1:47Speaker 1: sent it the picture to Ray Fulter, one of our
- 1:50Speaker 1: buddies that we used to tour with, and he's still
- 1:53Speaker 1: tours with Luke and uh I sent Ray that picture
- 1:57Speaker 1: of the deer because I didn't post it that night.
- 1:59Speaker 1: I just tweeted, I think I killed the Indiana state record. Now, okay,
- 2:02Speaker 1: we're gonna get into this whole story. How did you think?
- 2:05Speaker 1: But real quick, why did you think it was that
- 2:08Speaker 1: just because someone rough scored it? Yeah? I had a
- 2:10Speaker 1: buddy come over that that evening after I killed it,
- 2:13Speaker 1: and he undershot it. Yeah, that's a good friend. Yeah,
- 2:17Speaker 1: he had like to thirteen, which he had never scored.
- 2:21Speaker 1: He was like his first time scoring, you know, a
- 2:24Speaker 1: big deer and what did it come in at thirteen
- 2:27Speaker 1: is what he had? But no, no, no, that's what
- 2:30Speaker 1: he had. It was two eleven and four eights net
- 2:32Speaker 1: to sixteen four or to sixteen and two eights gross. Okay,
- 2:36Speaker 1: so so he alright, so he overshot the actual Yeah,
- 2:41Speaker 1: but how did you not immediately realize because you didn't
- 2:43Speaker 1: look at National You just looked at Indiana. I just
- 2:45Speaker 1: looked at Indiana. I googled Indiana state record because I
- 2:48Speaker 1: had never looked at world records or anything. Yeah, you
- 2:52Speaker 1: felt like distinctly Indiana, And I was like, well, hell,
- 2:54Speaker 1: this might be Indiana. But and it crushed it right, Yeah,
- 2:57Speaker 1: by like eight ten inches or something. Ye tenant maybe
- 3:02Speaker 1: even more so. The only typical white tail bigger out
- 3:07Speaker 1: there is in Canada. Canada the handsome handsome buck. If
- 3:12Speaker 1: you want to know what the handsome buck looks like,
- 3:14Speaker 1: go look at Pat Durkin's truck. He's got a decale
- 3:17Speaker 1: of it on his truck. Does he need a huff
- 3:19Speaker 1: buck one? You do? Definitely as part of your as
- 3:23Speaker 1: part of your business plan, you need to get huff
- 3:27Speaker 1: Buck stickers. That'd be good. That'd be good. Yeah, Yeah,
- 3:31Speaker 1: get on that. Um, you got your guitar. No, we
- 3:34Speaker 1: brought you a guitar. Yeah, I wish you had that
- 3:36Speaker 1: whole damn dear head with you. I know, if I
- 3:38Speaker 1: could have fitted on the plane, I would have brought it.
- 3:41Speaker 1: I see it, So I guess, my hands how big
- 3:43Speaker 1: is it? I guess I could have drove my focus,
- 3:46Speaker 1: my Ford focus out here all the way. I'm gonna
- 3:49Speaker 1: ask you tone of questions about the whole store. I
- 3:51Speaker 1: got one question to ask you first, when you drew
- 3:54Speaker 1: back on it, were you thinking, damn, that's a big buck. Oh.
- 3:58Speaker 1: I knew he was huge right whenever I first see
- 4:00Speaker 1: him in the creek. He was faced, and I was
- 4:03Speaker 1: just like, this is a h deer. That's all I
- 4:06Speaker 1: was thinking, because I had never even seen a hundred.
- 4:10Speaker 1: To clarify, he killed it with a crossbow. Yeah, the
- 4:14Speaker 1: good shot placement. Thank you. Forty yards kill me with
- 4:18Speaker 1: the crossbow. Yep, hmm, we'll talk about that. Yep, yep.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Dude drown in from West Valley City, Utah. Name is Braxton.
- 4:32Speaker 1: There's a thing called is the thing happens to babies?
- 4:36Speaker 1: Braxton Hicks. Is that something happens to women? No? No, No,
- 4:40Speaker 1: that's that's a woman thing. Yeah, those like the false contractions. Yeah,
- 4:44Speaker 1: if you're a lady out there, the two of you listening.
- 4:50Speaker 1: A lot of times people come up to me in airports.
- 4:53Speaker 1: They would be like, you know, I always like it's
- 4:54Speaker 1: just dudes that come up to me in airports, right,
- 4:56Speaker 1: But then now and then a woman will come up
- 4:57Speaker 1: to me an airport and I'm like, awesome, She's like,
- 5:00Speaker 1: my husband likes your show. He was too scared to
- 5:05Speaker 1: come up. That's him over there, waving sheepishly. My husband
- 5:10Speaker 1: likes your show. Um, you ladies out there, how well, roughly,
- 5:15Speaker 1: how pregnant are you when you start having bracks and hicks?
- 5:17Speaker 1: Is it's pretty close to the end. That's in like
- 5:20Speaker 1: the eighth Yeah, I mean that's up to the finish line.
- 5:23Speaker 1: So if you're sitting there listening to the show and
- 5:26Speaker 1: you're like, oh my god, I'm going to labor, you
- 5:29Speaker 1: might just be having bracks and hicks attractions. This dude's
- 5:33Speaker 1: named Braxton, who I'm talking about. That's why I bring
- 5:35Speaker 1: it up. He's a turkey hunter. Sounds like he might
- 5:39Speaker 1: be a new turkey hunter. He might be an emerging
- 5:42Speaker 1: turkey hunter, because he says, first off, he's allergic to
- 5:49Speaker 1: pollinating juniper trees. That's important to lay out, he says,
- 5:56Speaker 1: And all of his turkey hunting, he's ever he's only
- 5:58Speaker 1: ever gotten one shot gobbil offer to jurkey, and that
- 6:02Speaker 1: was when he had he was having a reaction to
- 6:05Speaker 1: a juniper tree and sneezed and shot gobbled bird twenty
- 6:09Speaker 1: yards behind him. He started laughing so hard to bird
- 6:14Speaker 1: got away. So if we ever redo our t shirt
- 6:17Speaker 1: of ship that makes turkey gobbles? Is that even on there? Sneezes.
- 6:21Speaker 1: I don't think it's the pukin's on there? Really? Yeah,
- 6:25Speaker 1: we had a guy puke up one. He just got
- 6:29Speaker 1: a shot gobbl Since I can't really turkey call, maybe
- 6:34Speaker 1: those are the noises I should practice making when I'm
- 6:36Speaker 1: walking around. Sonic booms, sonic booms, puke in everything, Oh yeah,
- 6:45Speaker 1: twin rotor helicopters. Yanni, can you recap your story about
- 6:54Speaker 1: everything that's going on at your turkey farm, like the
- 6:57Speaker 1: whole thing, because we got a lot of feedback about it,
- 6:59Speaker 1: a lot of worries, um, but mostly about how my
- 7:05Speaker 1: hands got bread that part of it. That and and
- 7:09Speaker 1: about how they come in the house looking for their eggs,
- 7:12Speaker 1: just about them getting eaten by predators whatever you like whatever. Alright, Well,
- 7:18Speaker 1: you know, Yanni got predated by his chickens, got attacked
- 7:22Speaker 1: by Martin. He's the only guy to know who had
- 7:24Speaker 1: his chickens attacked by Martin. Yeah, and and turkeys. But
- 7:27Speaker 1: the turkeys survived, did They just lost quite a few.
- 7:30Speaker 1: One lost a chunk of her upper beak and then
- 7:33Speaker 1: she lost Wondering about that one hand that was missing,
- 7:36Speaker 1: and she lost to Martin. As far as we know,
- 7:43Speaker 1: his wife called the Martin red handed. You know, skunks
- 7:46Speaker 1: are around foxes, fox I think does the most damage
- 7:51Speaker 1: to us. Call you up real quick. I'm reading the
- 7:54Speaker 1: world's greatest book ever written called Black Range Tails. It's
- 7:57Speaker 1: Carl Malcolm's book. I own a copy to we it's
- 8:04Speaker 1: crazy because we're hunting in this area in New Mexico.
- 8:06Speaker 1: And he said, Man, you gotta read Black Range Tails.
- 8:09Speaker 1: I can't give this detail. Wake said, never mind, I'll
- 8:12Speaker 1: tell you another thing though, I was gave away in
- 8:16Speaker 1: my hunt spot like real specifically gave it away. But anyway,
- 8:23Speaker 1: now and tails and figure it out, won't It won't
- 8:28Speaker 1: work like that. So anyways, there's a dude in Black
- 8:31Speaker 1: Range Tails. There's a miner who has what what was
- 8:34Speaker 1: it like? You know how everybody used to have rheumatism
- 8:36Speaker 1: all time in the old days, mountain man miner bones,
- 8:41Speaker 1: they all had rheumatism. Yeah, So one miner had come
- 8:47Speaker 1: to another minor telling him I need a big fat
- 8:50Speaker 1: skunk in the book, and actually he tells the story
- 8:54Speaker 1: of how they wind up getting the skunk for him.
- 8:56Speaker 1: He needs a big fat skunk, and they get the skunk,
- 8:59Speaker 1: but the skunk sprays him. Then they carry the skunk
- 9:01Speaker 1: around and then they render it's fat, because you know
- 9:05Speaker 1: how like snake oil. This minor believed that skunk fat
- 9:11Speaker 1: rubbed down his joints would cure his rheumatism. And it worked.
- 9:17Speaker 1: He came back a while later and said it cleared up.
- 9:22Speaker 1: But the miner that got the skunk, he knew that
- 9:25Speaker 1: when you had rheumatism. He got on his horse. This
- 9:28Speaker 1: is eies. He would get on his horse and ride
- 9:30Speaker 1: to the hot springs and cure his rheumatism in the
- 9:35Speaker 1: hot springs like his care better. And the mountain men
- 9:38Speaker 1: would suffer. They would suffer horribly from it because they
- 9:41Speaker 1: didn't have chess waiters. And they're beaver trapping in the water,
- 9:45Speaker 1: which is right. They how did they do that? Because
- 9:48Speaker 1: they wear they'd build, they'd make buckskin pants that went
- 9:51Speaker 1: to your upper knee, and then they'd put wool there
- 9:54Speaker 1: down just to add a little insulation. So when you
- 9:57Speaker 1: see him a picture of a free trapper, and he's
- 10:00Speaker 1: outlaw buckskinning and wool lowers. But they would they would
- 10:04Speaker 1: get suffered in their knees from all that cold water,
- 10:06Speaker 1: and the he was a plaster miner, so they're working
- 10:10Speaker 1: stream beds and he would get rheumatism from the stand
- 10:13Speaker 1: in the cold water all time. Are you getting it yet? Yeah,
- 10:16Speaker 1: I'll tell you when I get it. It's very specific.
- 10:20Speaker 1: If I stop and kneel in the snow and then
- 10:22Speaker 1: walk down a steep hill, which you think wouldn't come
- 10:25Speaker 1: up very often, but it does. Oh yeah, you tell
- 10:30Speaker 1: your freaking turkey story. Well, last August we received in
- 10:35Speaker 1: the mail. I think we had to order twenty and
- 10:38Speaker 1: when they got there, I want to say that eighteen
- 10:41Speaker 1: had made it. Uh. So you opened the box and
- 10:43Speaker 1: there's two dead turkeys in. Yeah, and I think that
- 10:46Speaker 1: that attrition is expected. You know, they're just there like
- 10:50Speaker 1: days old, and you know they just you know, we're
- 10:53Speaker 1: shipped across the country where they think they came out of.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Maybe your neck of the was dust and somewhere down
- 10:58Speaker 1: around those parts, not quite the south, not quite in
- 11:01Speaker 1: the midwest, southeast, not quite right in the middle. Is
- 11:07Speaker 1: there is there ice fishing? That's how we can do
- 11:13Speaker 1: in India for how many months of the year month
- 11:19Speaker 1: month or so? Farm ponds man I don't know if
- 11:22Speaker 1: you know, but there's a thing called the ronella doctrine.
- 11:26Speaker 1: You live in the state where they can ice fish.
- 11:29Speaker 1: You don't live in the south. Really well, I guess
- 11:32Speaker 1: I'm north there, Oh Yankee, Okay, your accident just changed
- 11:37Speaker 1: when you said that and realized, gosh darn it. When
- 11:44Speaker 1: we were when we're hunting with Luke, we're laughing about
- 11:50Speaker 1: uh like they were saying, hey, they were telling Luke
- 11:54Speaker 1: and his friends were asking us to do, like, so
- 11:57Speaker 1: do your southern thing for us, And I was like,
- 12:00Speaker 1: is no way in the world in the world, I'm
- 12:04Speaker 1: gonna tell you, guys, how we goofed like the voice
- 12:07Speaker 1: we use to goof on Southerners. And they're like, well,
- 12:12Speaker 1: we have the same thing, like when we talk about Yankees,
- 12:16Speaker 1: and he does it, and I'm like, no, you're not
- 12:17Speaker 1: talking about Yankees. You're talking about people from northern Wisconsin.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Oh yeah, to filets, per salmon, big Box. I'm like
- 12:30Speaker 1: the northern ex we're up in Green Bay. Yeah, oh yeah, yeah, guy,
- 12:38Speaker 1: big Box. The turkeys. Yeah. So we uh we raised
- 12:46Speaker 1: them up and uh sold off I don't know, sold
- 12:52Speaker 1: off most of them. What'd you do with the dead ones?
- 12:53Speaker 1: In the box. It wasn't ceremonious, was no. Uh the
- 13:00Speaker 1: garbage can probably, but we raised them up and uh
- 13:06Speaker 1: sold off most of them. I think we're My goal
- 13:08Speaker 1: was to keep five. I think sold him as what
- 13:14Speaker 1: just sold turkeys? Well, whatever you want to do with them.
- 13:18Speaker 1: How big were they when he sold him? Oh jeez,
- 13:22Speaker 1: I don't know. Pretty good. I mean like a bait,
- 13:24Speaker 1: like a fall poult, you know, like a bird that
- 13:28Speaker 1: where you're like, she it's almost about Yeah, we just
- 13:31Speaker 1: wanted to kind of break even. I just put it
- 13:34Speaker 1: out on Instagram, and so I think we had Instagram. Yeah,
- 13:39Speaker 1: so you broadcast to a national audience. Yeah, and you
- 13:43Speaker 1: know what, that was a mistake because a lot of
- 13:45Speaker 1: people from far away we're like, so what would it
- 13:49Speaker 1: take to get a couple in southern Indiana. I'm like, bro, no,
- 13:53Speaker 1: it's not happening. Okay, you can if you can drive here,
- 13:57Speaker 1: you can buy as many as you want. So it
- 13:59Speaker 1: wasn't too hard. Well, I ended up selling them all
- 14:01Speaker 1: to I think there's some living in um. You know,
- 14:05Speaker 1: I think I told you I sold some to the
- 14:08Speaker 1: daughter of um Gosh, darn, I'm not gonna remember his
- 14:13Speaker 1: name now. John the turkey author that was saying that
- 14:17Speaker 1: we should have on the show that lives with his
- 14:20Speaker 1: daughter out by like three forks country. Now, they bought
- 14:24Speaker 1: some and we did that deal right in the Costco
- 14:27Speaker 1: parking lot. I just had a box turkeys, put him
- 14:30Speaker 1: in her truck and she gave me some cash and uh,
- 14:36Speaker 1: and then there's some living I think down kind of
- 14:39Speaker 1: like South cotton Wood at the mouth of Highlight Day.
- 14:43Speaker 1: And Uh. Anyways, unfortunately, uh, in the end, when I
- 14:48Speaker 1: thought I had one, I wanted one to keep one, Jake,
- 14:52Speaker 1: because we thought we would enjoy the jake in the
- 14:54Speaker 1: spring when he would gobble and strut around, you know.
- 14:58Speaker 1: And Uh, turns out I can't sex them very well,
- 15:01Speaker 1: even when they're you know, five six months old, And
- 15:04Speaker 1: so I was left with a bunch of hands, and
- 15:07Speaker 1: uh we lost I don't know a few more, and
- 15:09Speaker 1: hey we're down to two now two hands. We lost
- 15:13Speaker 1: them to a pine Martin. Um probably lost some. What
- 15:17Speaker 1: happened is I was trying to teach them the roost
- 15:20Speaker 1: in those fir trees, you know, right next to the
- 15:23Speaker 1: driveway there, and uh, so you're like gather around turkeys. No,
- 15:26Speaker 1: we threw them up in there. That one night we'd
- 15:29Speaker 1: throw her place one or two onto a limb and
- 15:33Speaker 1: then everybody else would be like okay and fly up.
- 15:36Speaker 1: It was quite impressive to see. Um. The general flying
- 15:40Speaker 1: of the turkeys that we got to watch while we
- 15:42Speaker 1: had the big flock was cool. They'd climb way up
- 15:44Speaker 1: that hill behind the house, and then when they were
- 15:47Speaker 1: done on the hill, they wouldn't walk down. They'd all
- 15:49Speaker 1: pitch and then come swooping and dive bombing in and
- 15:52Speaker 1: land right like at the garage or next to the garage.
- 15:55Speaker 1: And to see like fifteen turkeys do that together, it's
- 15:57Speaker 1: a pretty cool thing. Um. But yeah, they weren't smart
- 16:02Speaker 1: about roosting, and no matter how many times I pitched
- 16:05Speaker 1: them up there, they liked this fence. And the fence
- 16:08Speaker 1: was maybe six ft tall. I guess that that is
- 16:11Speaker 1: uh low enough to the ground where a fox can
- 16:14Speaker 1: jump up and get some part of them. And um
- 16:18Speaker 1: any who, Uh, I had a day. I came home.
- 16:24Speaker 1: I'm getting to the part where the turkeys got into
- 16:26Speaker 1: the house. Um. I come home, I go into the house,
- 16:30Speaker 1: leave what we call the service door open. It's just
- 16:33Speaker 1: like the side door into the house, and uh go
- 16:36Speaker 1: back to the truck to go grab a few things,
- 16:38Speaker 1: some groceries or whatever. And in the short little period
- 16:41Speaker 1: of time, all five her chickens and the two hands
- 16:43Speaker 1: have gone into the kitchen, and one hand has jumped
- 16:47Speaker 1: up onto the countertop where the eggs are kept. And
- 16:50Speaker 1: at this point that the turkey hands were laying eggs,
- 16:53Speaker 1: and she is with her beak sort of fondling and
- 16:56Speaker 1: rolling a turkey egg that's in a basket of eggs,
- 17:00Speaker 1: And I can see that she's specifically working the turkey
- 17:02Speaker 1: egg and not the chicken eggs that are around it.
- 17:05Speaker 1: So I thought that was kind of interesting that she
- 17:06Speaker 1: like walked into the house and literally within thirty seconds
- 17:10Speaker 1: like knew exactly where the eggs were and then was
- 17:12Speaker 1: able to pick out possibly her egg. Um. Then another
- 17:19Speaker 1: little interesting thing that we had happened was that some
- 17:23Speaker 1: wild jakes showed up a four pack originally they're down
- 17:26Speaker 1: to three now roady there there again last night, and
- 17:29Speaker 1: they actually roosted at the house last Well, he just
- 17:33Speaker 1: he hadn't had time. You didn't let me know last night.
- 17:37Speaker 1: It was late. It was too late over there for
- 17:40Speaker 1: a while, set up a tent in the yard. Um
- 17:47Speaker 1: and uh, one day, Uh, we're we're in the basement
- 17:50Speaker 1: looking at the basement windows, and uh, all the jakes
- 17:54Speaker 1: are there, and our two hands are there, and uh,
- 17:57Speaker 1: it's interesting because Jennifer thinks that our hands think that
- 18:01Speaker 1: they're chickens. And when they see those wild jake's, they
- 18:04Speaker 1: don't go, oh, you're one of us, They're like, what
- 18:07Speaker 1: are you? Like they literally could give a ship if
- 18:11Speaker 1: those jake's are there, Strutton goblin or whatever, couldn't They
- 18:14Speaker 1: couldn't give ship. They don't. They don't pay any attention
- 18:17Speaker 1: to them whatsoever. Like they wanted so little that they
- 18:22Speaker 1: wouldn't even give ship for it exactly. But sometime you
- 18:27Speaker 1: normally just want to get rid of They wouldn't even
- 18:29Speaker 1: give that for it. You got it. Yeah, thanks for
- 18:34Speaker 1: the clarification. One time, I don't know if next to
- 18:39Speaker 1: the house everybody's got this where like the grass doesn't
- 18:42Speaker 1: quite grow right up to the edge of your house
- 18:44Speaker 1: and you kind of sort of have like either a
- 18:46Speaker 1: mud or a dirt or like a dusty, dry kind
- 18:49Speaker 1: of zone where the grass kind of quits before you
- 18:51Speaker 1: hit like the concrete. You know, well, chickens and and
- 18:55Speaker 1: turkeys will like to dust in that stuff. So I
- 18:58Speaker 1: don't know if this hand was using or if she
- 19:02Speaker 1: actually laid down to get bread, but basically right outside
- 19:05Speaker 1: the window, like right under our noses. Uh, those four
- 19:09Speaker 1: Jake's bread what looked like bread her And yeah, it's
- 19:15Speaker 1: hard to say what you know, kids like those turkeys
- 19:17Speaker 1: are fighting. Oh no, no, I told my girls. I said,
- 19:20Speaker 1: listen that if when you guys talk about this, use
- 19:23Speaker 1: that word sexy and it's like super cute and all that.
- 19:25Speaker 1: I said, that's what the boys are gonna want to
- 19:27Speaker 1: do to you right there straight. Yeah, we talk about
- 19:33Speaker 1: anywhere kids, man, because they're here about it anyway at school.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Oh yeah, well, what's gonna happen Susie's you're gonna lay
- 19:45Speaker 1: down and say we just lay it all out, man.
- 19:47Speaker 1: And it was funny you start laying something out for
- 19:49Speaker 1: your kids that you think you're being a little ahead
- 19:51Speaker 1: of the game to lay it out for him. They're like, oh, yeah,
- 19:56Speaker 1: tell me something. Yeah I heard at school that what
- 20:00Speaker 1: happens is now listen while we're on the subject, No,
- 20:04Speaker 1: that's not what happens. What happens is this. But there's
- 20:07Speaker 1: nothing you can't get ahead of anything, No, not in public. School,
- 20:12Speaker 1: so we figured they may have or may not have
- 20:15Speaker 1: gotten bread. We were going to then save the eggs
- 20:19Speaker 1: and put them in an incubator. But the more we
- 20:22Speaker 1: researched it and and started messing around with it, or
- 20:25Speaker 1: didn't mess around with it because it was just gonna
- 20:29Speaker 1: be a a big investment to get into it and
- 20:33Speaker 1: to get an incubator. Yeah, we kind of had them,
- 20:36Speaker 1: and we were reading reviews on the incubators and the warmers,
- 20:38Speaker 1: and you got to turn why can't she just incubate her?
- 20:42Speaker 1: We tried, and they're yeah, they're just not into it.
- 20:46Speaker 1: They don't know enough about being turkeys. No, I don't
- 20:50Speaker 1: know or if that's part of the problem they had
- 20:52Speaker 1: when they used to try to reintroduce turkeys by putting
- 20:55Speaker 1: out domestic like like farm raised wild turkeys, could never
- 21:00Speaker 1: pull it together. They didn't know how to avoid predators,
- 21:03Speaker 1: they didn't know how to nest, and then they realized
- 21:05Speaker 1: you got to move wild turkeys to establish wild turkeys.
- 21:08Speaker 1: That's right. You can. I tell you two pieces of feedback, Yeah,
- 21:12Speaker 1: please do so one I like it was a very
- 21:15Speaker 1: long email, that's all one sentence. It's great. It's like
- 21:22Speaker 1: like McCarthy would get lost reading this um. It's a
- 21:28Speaker 1: great sentence. I can read it. But one guy wrote
- 21:31Speaker 1: in a very similar experience to you, Yanni. He lives
- 21:34Speaker 1: in the area. Hold on, is this a sentence or not? No? No,
- 21:37Speaker 1: there's two Turkey letters that are of a note. The
- 21:41Speaker 1: first one is not a single sentence. Got it. But
- 21:46Speaker 1: he lives in the area northeast of Atlanta. They hadn't
- 21:51Speaker 1: seen a wild turkey um in fifteen years. Hold that
- 21:59Speaker 1: thought from it. In the book and Barry Lopez book
- 22:02Speaker 1: Arctic Dreams, he talks about this phenomenon that happens where
- 22:06Speaker 1: you know what a fiord is. There's a thing that
- 22:10Speaker 1: will happened to whales blew the whales now and then
- 22:12Speaker 1: where they'll be working the back of a fiord, and
- 22:18Speaker 1: the fiordal freeze m hm, and so so so much
- 22:23Speaker 1: of the fiord freezes that they can't hold their breath
- 22:26Speaker 1: long enough to get from the area they've kept open
- 22:32Speaker 1: out to the open sea. So they've kept it open,
- 22:37Speaker 1: activity kept it open, and they'll be locked there quite
- 22:43Speaker 1: it could be quite a group of them, and they
- 22:45Speaker 1: just keep an area open and they can't hold their
- 22:47Speaker 1: breath long enough to get out. From the ice, and
- 22:51Speaker 1: the ice is too thick to break it. And when
- 22:53Speaker 1: this happens, here's the part that the mystery part of it.
- 22:56Speaker 1: When this happens, polar bears just materialized there and it's like,
- 23:00Speaker 1: how in the world. And I was talking about this
- 23:02Speaker 1: one time has happened in like thirteen polar bears wound
- 23:05Speaker 1: up there and they'll be like, how do they know?
- 23:10Speaker 1: How do they know this is going? We're so did
- 23:12Speaker 1: the whales die and then are on shore rot They
- 23:16Speaker 1: keep a small area open, so there's these whales are
- 23:18Speaker 1: just swimming around in a circle, alive in the water.
- 23:21Speaker 1: They're they're coming up and breathing and their activity. There's
- 23:24Speaker 1: a whole pot of them and they're able to keep
- 23:27Speaker 1: a little breathing hole open, but they can't leave because
- 23:30Speaker 1: they can't hold their breath long enough to keep to
- 23:32Speaker 1: other open water. And it's like this mystery that he
- 23:35Speaker 1: gets I was just ruling out that there wasn't like
- 23:37Speaker 1: a rotting whale car bears are killing it. But even
- 23:41Speaker 1: like if you look at like the densities of bears,
- 23:43Speaker 1: there's bears from this isn't just ones that wander by.
- 23:47Speaker 1: It's sort of like this like, how does like, how
- 23:50Speaker 1: does word get out? Are they that good at smelling?
- 23:54Speaker 1: You know? Or whatever? Hold that thought? Uh had no
- 24:00Speaker 1: wild turkeys in fifteen years. This old man had killed
- 24:02Speaker 1: one fifteen years earlier, and that was a rare sighting.
- 24:06Speaker 1: He gets some hands, He goes out and buy some
- 24:08Speaker 1: turkey hands, and bam, there's a stratter out breeding his hands. Like,
- 24:16Speaker 1: word gets out. He watched what hand got bred by
- 24:20Speaker 1: the stratter and saved her eggs and he's incubating those eggs.
- 24:27Speaker 1: He hashed them. According to that email, I ended up
- 24:30Speaker 1: hatching off the majority of her eggs that she laid
- 24:33Speaker 1: and had great success with the offspring in this breeding season.
- 24:39Speaker 1: So yeah, successfully he hatched the hybrids I would have.
- 24:44Speaker 1: I would like to name Slade. Follow up question hell
- 24:49Speaker 1: of a name is if the offspring, yeah, if they
- 24:52Speaker 1: were more like did they tend to be more wild
- 24:56Speaker 1: slash Ferrell or did they just follow the domestic around
- 25:00Speaker 1: and become barnyard birds? Ready for the single sentence? Please?
- 25:06Speaker 1: Oh you know what, there's a period here. Someone going
- 25:08Speaker 1: into add periods the whole thing. Give me the original,
- 25:18Speaker 1: the original, Oh, dude's great sense, this might be a
- 25:22Speaker 1: new song. I think it's a sentence because it didn't
- 25:25Speaker 1: have a period at the end. Okay, so it's whatever
- 25:28Speaker 1: you have. It's a passage stream of consciousness. Oh yeah,
- 25:34Speaker 1: it was great. Though. You have been talking a lot
- 25:38Speaker 1: about turkeys on the podcast lately, so I thought I
- 25:41Speaker 1: would share with you a pretty crazy story. I lived
- 25:43Speaker 1: near a creek. We say creek around from a creek
- 25:46Speaker 1: as a sound of rusty Dorr hinge makes anyway, moving on, anyway,
- 25:53Speaker 1: moving on. My wife thought a few turkeys added to
- 25:56Speaker 1: the barnyard would be a good idea to eat what
- 25:58Speaker 1: the horses, cows and pigs leave behind, and we would
- 26:01Speaker 1: eat them in the fall. So she brought home with
- 26:03Speaker 1: tom and two hens she got from a friend. They
- 26:06Speaker 1: were adults, and she thought she would just hatch them
- 26:08Speaker 1: off and raise her own. Long story short. At one
- 26:10Speaker 1: point there was six jakes and two Tom's that came
- 26:13Speaker 1: up from the creek. The struck on the two hands,
- 26:15Speaker 1: and that poor bastard Tommy was working his ass off
- 26:19Speaker 1: to defend his two hands. He had been fighting so
- 26:21Speaker 1: much most of the feathers on his breast and legs
- 26:24Speaker 1: was gone from being spurred off from the wild turkeys.
- 26:26Speaker 1: I came home from work to find one of the
- 26:29Speaker 1: hens dead. Didn't think much of it. Maybe she was
- 26:31Speaker 1: sick or who knows. A few days later I find
- 26:34Speaker 1: the second hand den with two or three of the
- 26:36Speaker 1: wild Jakes still breeding her even though she was dead
- 26:39Speaker 1: and Old Tommy joined the dark side, was joining him period.
- 26:45Speaker 1: There's a period that was a sentence that was like
- 26:47Speaker 1: an accident, Like I don't think he even meant to
- 26:50Speaker 1: put that period. It contained because the next two words
- 26:53Speaker 1: of the continuation there's supposed to be an end instead
- 26:56Speaker 1: of that period. He was joining in on the fun.
- 26:59Speaker 1: Oh sorry, so that's still the same sense. Listen, this
- 27:02Speaker 1: is not listen. Here's the thing. This is not the
- 27:05Speaker 1: dog on the person wrote because it's like everything I
- 27:07Speaker 1: need to know is here, all the details, everything I
- 27:11Speaker 1: need to know is here. You could have a guy
- 27:13Speaker 1: who's real good with a period, who could not who right,
- 27:16Speaker 1: would not be able to write this story. So this
- 27:19Speaker 1: is nothing. No comment on that it's great or would
- 27:23Speaker 1: be a natural break. She was dead and old Tommy
- 27:25Speaker 1: joined the dark Side and was joining in on the fun. Yeah,
- 27:28Speaker 1: I was saying, there might be more to the Turkey
- 27:30Speaker 1: that we have yet to learn. Talking about his hand
- 27:33Speaker 1: rooting through the eggs on his counter. But nature, along
- 27:37Speaker 1: with man kinda can be pretty brutal. Can you imagine
- 27:41Speaker 1: being bred to your death? Pretty rough way to go.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Thanks for all the good work and great educational entertainment.
- 27:49Speaker 1: You got that last sense on the bright side. On
- 27:54Speaker 1: the bright side, old tom, he was already half plucked
- 27:57Speaker 1: for the roaster, and my brother and two of my
- 27:59Speaker 1: younger cousins kill a couple of nice times that year,
- 28:01Speaker 1: right from the pasture. Heartwarming story. That look good on
- 28:09Speaker 1: a T shirt. M I'd buy it. Oh, that would
- 28:12Speaker 1: be a great T shirt. We should get permission, see
- 28:16Speaker 1: if we could print that out of Oh, dude, we
- 28:20Speaker 1: gotta do that. He send that Sam James being bred
- 28:26Speaker 1: to death? Thank you by sending that to Sam James.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Those shirts we gotta get. Can you manage this? Gran? Okay?
- 28:38Speaker 1: I wope. I gotta get my tomatoes in. So here's
- 28:42Speaker 1: here's what steps you need to take. Asked that gentleman.
- 28:44Speaker 1: If we can print it on a T shirt, you'll
- 28:46Speaker 1: get a free T shirt and then tell Sam we
- 28:48Speaker 1: just need this worked up on a T shirt. We
- 28:51Speaker 1: don't do that. I'm thinking, Hell, Vetica, we don't do that.
- 28:53Speaker 1: We should do a graphic novel. Help either T shirt
- 28:59Speaker 1: or grab now hell vedica a big block whatever thing
- 29:05Speaker 1: looks good, not like a heavy metal fine. It needs
- 29:08Speaker 1: to be like, yeah, there's a new Dustin Huff song. Maybe, yeah,
- 29:15Speaker 1: you could get a couple of lines out of it.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Probably you're gonna sing a song, right if y'all want,
- 29:23Speaker 1: man are my the way I write my initials and
- 29:26Speaker 1: heavy metal style, like the way you like to say?
- 29:29Speaker 1: Do you think that's worth? We could just make our
- 29:31Speaker 1: own Yanni. We could call it Yanni's initial font. Sorry
- 29:37Speaker 1: you always say I just thought I just wrote my initials.
- 29:41Speaker 1: When Yanni writes his initials, they're in a heavy metal fine.
- 29:45Speaker 1: I don't know what it takes to get like a
- 29:47Speaker 1: font like you want to you want to like draw
- 29:50Speaker 1: out the rest of the alphabet. Here's a here's a
- 29:55Speaker 1: question came in. This is legit question? Uh hunter from
- 29:59Speaker 1: on harry O, Canada rode in with a question that
- 30:02Speaker 1: many folks may have its like is that you editorializing? There?
- 30:08Speaker 1: Who's saying like many folks may have anything that's not
- 30:12Speaker 1: italicized as me writing kran editorializing? The question is is
- 30:19Speaker 1: he sees a lot of TV shows such as ours,
- 30:22Speaker 1: he points out, and other folks who shoot big game
- 30:26Speaker 1: and they'll they'll shoot it and then say they're gonna
- 30:28Speaker 1: leave it until tomorrow. And he's like, the way I
- 30:31Speaker 1: was brought up, you're supposed to go get an animal
- 30:33Speaker 1: no matter what and at least gut it as soon
- 30:35Speaker 1: as possible to save as much meat as possible. Am
- 30:38Speaker 1: I wrong to think that way? And am I missing something?
- 30:40Speaker 1: Or is the carcass okay to be left overnight with
- 30:43Speaker 1: the guts inside, not knowing if you made a perfect,
- 30:47Speaker 1: longer heart shot. I'm a meat hunter in Ontario, Canada,
- 30:51Speaker 1: and this has come up a lot in hunting camp conversations. Uh,
- 30:55Speaker 1: this is a great opportunity for everybody else's here besides
- 31:00Speaker 1: dust and to introduce themselves and answer this quick question quickly.
- 31:04Speaker 1: That way, my dad will be happy like that, He'll
- 31:06Speaker 1: still be a little upset that Mark Kenyon, Mark Kenyon,
- 31:13Speaker 1: Why would someone say best leave it till tomorrow? Yeah,
- 31:17Speaker 1: that's a good question. Uh. And it comes down to
- 31:19Speaker 1: the fact that not every shot is a perfect lung
- 31:23Speaker 1: or heart shot. So if you do have that perfect
- 31:25Speaker 1: shot and you're very confident that deer is going down
- 31:27Speaker 1: right away, then yeah, go get him. But if either
- 31:31Speaker 1: from your best guess of where it hit or you
- 31:34Speaker 1: actually saw where the hit was, if it was farther back,
- 31:36Speaker 1: there's certain places where you might hit a deer with
- 31:38Speaker 1: really a bow or a gun that's going to tell
- 31:40Speaker 1: you that that deer might not die right away. And
- 31:43Speaker 1: if you were to let's say, hit that deer back
- 31:46Speaker 1: towards the stomach or the intestines and then go chasing
- 31:48Speaker 1: after that deer right away, he's probably not dead yet
- 31:51Speaker 1: and you're more than likely going to bump that deer
- 31:53Speaker 1: and run it even farther away, in which case you
- 31:56Speaker 1: might not recover that deer at all. So the idea
- 31:58Speaker 1: behind because it might not be bleeding by them. Yeah,
- 32:01Speaker 1: So the idea is many times a deer like that
- 32:04Speaker 1: will bed down relatively quickly but might not die for
- 32:07Speaker 1: four or eight or ten hours. You know, that's that's
- 32:10Speaker 1: the worst case scenario, But that does happen. So in
- 32:12Speaker 1: that case, wait that amount of time, or wait till
- 32:15Speaker 1: the next morning, and then that deer is probably gonna
- 32:18Speaker 1: be right where it bettered down at first, and you
- 32:20Speaker 1: will recover that deer. Now, if it's a hot day,
- 32:22Speaker 1: you might lose some meat, and that's obviously a worst
- 32:25Speaker 1: case scenario, but it's better than not recovering the deer
- 32:27Speaker 1: at all. And if you're hunting later in the year
- 32:29Speaker 1: when it's cold out, many times that deer will be
- 32:32Speaker 1: perfectly fine. You'll be able to recover all the meat.
- 32:34Speaker 1: So I would always rather recover the deer and as
- 32:37Speaker 1: much of the meat as you can versus zero, which
- 32:40Speaker 1: is why you would wait in certain situations. I wouldn't
- 32:42Speaker 1: do it, you know, all the time. I would only
- 32:45Speaker 1: do it if you have to do it, ladies. Joan
- 32:48Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon now Mark Road an article for the media
- 32:52Speaker 1: dot com called how long should you Wait to Blood
- 32:55Speaker 1: Trailer Deer? Where he lays out all the scenario is
- 32:57Speaker 1: about like longs, guts, stomach, et cetera. Introduce yourself, spencer.
- 33:02Speaker 1: They spent New h and Mark also pointed out in
- 33:06Speaker 1: there what his uncle used to do in the nineties,
- 33:08Speaker 1: tell folks that approach. I remember, yeah, it took me
- 33:13Speaker 1: a second, but he he would always just this was
- 33:15Speaker 1: just to get a little bit of a weight after
- 33:18Speaker 1: he shot a deer. This was during gun season. He
- 33:20Speaker 1: would always bring a cigar with him, and he smoked
- 33:22Speaker 1: that victory cigar, and that would force him to wait
- 33:25Speaker 1: half an hour. So at least he give it a
- 33:27Speaker 1: little time, because the temptation. A lot of times you're
- 33:30Speaker 1: so excited you want to get out there right away
- 33:31Speaker 1: and go find it. But he always at least smoked
- 33:33Speaker 1: that victory cigar and then he knew, all right, I
- 33:36Speaker 1: gave it time. Now I can go search. My old
- 33:38Speaker 1: man was a firm believer, like hadn't like he circumstances
- 33:42Speaker 1: didn't matter. It was forty five minutes. You could walk
- 33:46Speaker 1: over and it could look like someone had gone through
- 33:47Speaker 1: the was with a bucket of paint. Minutes right, no matter,
- 33:53Speaker 1: you could you could have basically seen it stumble and fall. Yeah,
- 33:58Speaker 1: just that was it. Yeah, but that's the thing like
- 34:01Speaker 1: I had that happened, this last fault, like stumbling whirling around,
- 34:06Speaker 1: does a couple of circles. But then all of a sudden,
- 34:08Speaker 1: it looks like he's got his feet underneath him and
- 34:10Speaker 1: he rolls over the horizon. There's lots of blood. But
- 34:14Speaker 1: I'm like, you know what, you just don't know, and
- 34:18Speaker 1: like it is a good rule unless you see him
- 34:22Speaker 1: laying there with his tongue out. A friend was telling
- 34:24Speaker 1: me he gets story. He was just down fishing alligator
- 34:26Speaker 1: guards and he a guy was describing to him, how
- 34:30Speaker 1: long when your bomber goes down, how long to wait
- 34:35Speaker 1: for you set the hook? And he said, you want
- 34:39Speaker 1: to wait as long as it takes to smoke a
- 34:41Speaker 1: whole cigarette. And my friend doesn't smoke, and he pointed out,
- 34:46Speaker 1: he doesn't know what that means. He doesn't smoke, and
- 34:48Speaker 1: he said. The guy got kind of irritated and said,
- 34:51Speaker 1: I don't know. Count Hey, I feel like we're missing.
- 34:57Speaker 1: We're not answering his question. I'm not done with the question.
- 35:01Speaker 1: Can I tell you what Mark specifically wrote in this
- 35:04Speaker 1: article heart shot? I write it better than I said it.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Let me let me tell you what Mark says, heart
- 35:10Speaker 1: shot recover right away, double lung thirty to ninety minutes,
- 35:14Speaker 1: single lung or liver uh four to six hours, gut
- 35:18Speaker 1: shot eight to twelve hours. But yeah, but the deer
- 35:20Speaker 1: to have to kind of yell out what he what
- 35:22Speaker 1: happened to it? This is this is if you can
- 35:26Speaker 1: where there's a lot evidence on your arrow to to
- 35:28Speaker 1: tell you where you hit. Now, I think to even
- 35:33Speaker 1: more fully answer this if someone said, and I'll ask you, Mark,
- 35:38Speaker 1: have you ever in your life had someone know for
- 35:40Speaker 1: a fact that the deer was dead and just out
- 35:43Speaker 1: of sheer laziness say I'll go get it tomorrow. I
- 35:49Speaker 1: couldn't think of a single person I've ever met. It's
- 35:51Speaker 1: always you want to get it right now. That would
- 35:53Speaker 1: just be someone being lazy and dumb. Yeah. Uh. I
- 35:58Speaker 1: one time, eight at night kill the bowl my bow,
- 36:05Speaker 1: and it was dusk, and it was in an area
- 36:08Speaker 1: with a lot of grizzly bears, and made a decision
- 36:11Speaker 1: I'll regret. And we didn't want to open it up
- 36:16Speaker 1: until the next day because we didn't want to open
- 36:18Speaker 1: it up in the dark and let all that stink out.
- 36:23Speaker 1: And I mean it was already like getting dark, and
- 36:26Speaker 1: we were back in the pre dawn darkness and had
- 36:30Speaker 1: already lost the area around the ball joints and had
- 36:34Speaker 1: lost the tenderloins on it. And I always saw I
- 36:36Speaker 1: should have just lit a big fire, sucked it up
- 36:40Speaker 1: and got it done. And I thought it was supposed
- 36:43Speaker 1: to get cold that night, And then laying there for
- 36:44Speaker 1: a few hours, We're like, we had to hike a
- 36:46Speaker 1: couple of miles back to our gear laid there and
- 36:49Speaker 1: just like all now, I'm like, it's not getting cold's
- 36:51Speaker 1: not getting cold, and went back and just felt like
- 36:53Speaker 1: a dumbass. And I think even when it is cold,
- 36:56Speaker 1: an animal like an elk, like they trapped peat, Like
- 37:00Speaker 1: it could be twenty degrees out and you're gonna lose
- 37:03Speaker 1: me because heats just trapped inside of him. Yeah, And
- 37:07Speaker 1: it was just being like lazy and nervous and kind
- 37:09Speaker 1: of like overwhelmed by the logistics of like how are
- 37:11Speaker 1: you gonna go get all our ship and we'll be
- 37:14Speaker 1: one around the middle of the night, and like I
- 37:17Speaker 1: just made a dumb right, not something I'll do again.
- 37:23Speaker 1: Brodies here. So you feel like we answered it thoroughly
- 37:26Speaker 1: because there's that what the one thing that didn't get
- 37:30Speaker 1: mentioned is whatever you want to do, let me know
- 37:32Speaker 1: what I can go on. I am We never like
- 37:36Speaker 1: talked about when the animal is shot, like this is
- 37:39Speaker 1: like I'm assuming an animal that's shot right before dark
- 37:44Speaker 1: you do to me, I'm asking, I'm out. So Yanny
- 37:48Speaker 1: says it's time to move on. You don't want to
- 37:50Speaker 1: engage anymore. Maybe you can't clarify for me because I don't.
- 37:55Speaker 1: It's said that the question is he sees a lot
- 38:00Speaker 1: of TV shows such as ours and other folks who
- 38:02Speaker 1: shoot the game with it being a far hike to
- 38:06Speaker 1: retrieve the animal. Then they say, wait till tomorrow. What's
- 38:10Speaker 1: the explained to me what he's meaning by being a
- 38:13Speaker 1: far hike to retrieve the animal and how that plays
- 38:16Speaker 1: into the question you follow me. I'm sorry to see
- 38:20Speaker 1: I'm confused by the question and that part of the question,
- 38:24Speaker 1: and you're asking me, yeah, I declare. That's why I'm
- 38:26Speaker 1: asking if you felt like you answered it thoroughly, if
- 38:29Speaker 1: you if first of all, you have to understand the question.
- 38:31Speaker 1: I think he's I think he might be confusing two things.
- 38:34Speaker 1: That's why did you see the little addendum the addendum
- 38:38Speaker 1: I did? Or I said to know that it's dead
- 38:43Speaker 1: and just put it off till tomorrow isn't a thing
- 38:46Speaker 1: I'm aware of. And then I went on to site
- 38:49Speaker 1: a time when I did that and what circumstances drove
- 38:52Speaker 1: me to make that decision, and pointed out that I
- 38:54Speaker 1: had in fact regretted that decision. Do you feel there's
- 38:59Speaker 1: more to well? It just it still just doesn't answer
- 39:02Speaker 1: or clarify the part about like how it's like a
- 39:04Speaker 1: far hike to retrieve the animal. But I think you're wrong.
- 39:07Speaker 1: I don't know what he means where he's just like,
- 39:09Speaker 1: maybe I don't know what he means by that inflating
- 39:11Speaker 1: two things. Yeah, but nobody else either has any idea
- 39:14Speaker 1: what he's trying to say. Oh, like he's saying, you
- 39:18Speaker 1: did it because it was a far hike. He'll have
- 39:23Speaker 1: to right back in again. Do you guys know that? Uh?
- 39:26Speaker 1: Seth and Chester in the Walleye Tournament their first walleye
- 39:31Speaker 1: tournament Day one the seventy boats. They finished day one
- 39:35Speaker 1: number seven. They were hoping to do top twenty. They
- 39:40Speaker 1: finished Day one number seven their first ever walleye tournament
- 39:43Speaker 1: fishing in there. They had their fishing in their alumacraft.
- 39:49Speaker 1: We did all that begging and pleading to get him
- 39:50Speaker 1: a walleye boat. We got him a wallet boat from
- 39:52Speaker 1: a Lumacraft. So they're like a like a sponsored by
- 39:54Speaker 1: a lumacraft. Finished Day one number seven, had a couple
- 39:59Speaker 1: of problems, finished the tournament number seventeen out of seventy
- 40:04Speaker 1: five boats, but still took a cash prize. Huh how
- 40:08Speaker 1: much that? How much was it? How much is unterbucks
- 40:10Speaker 1: to conservation. Where are they? Where are they kicking that too?
- 40:13Speaker 1: They gotta wait and see. They gotta wait and see
- 40:14Speaker 1: how they do on the next ones. But those boys
- 40:16Speaker 1: first ever Walleye tournament finished day one number seven, finished
- 40:20Speaker 1: the tournament at number seventeen. Their goals to finish top twenty. Yeah,
- 40:24Speaker 1: says said he lost a monster the second day. That
- 40:27Speaker 1: would have really, they would have pushed him up. I'm
- 40:30Speaker 1: stoked for him. That's so damn good. That's a hard
- 40:32Speaker 1: body of water fish, especially when you live like six
- 40:35Speaker 1: hours away. Them to roll up there and get I'm
- 40:38Speaker 1: gonna tear that place a new one. This weekend guy
- 40:49Speaker 1: wrote in real riled up about Bighorn National Forest in Wyoming.
- 40:56Speaker 1: They're gonna they're they're looking to start charging for dispersed camping.
- 41:06Speaker 1: This is a solution brought forward two years ago by
- 41:11Speaker 1: the Get This Big Horn Mountains Coalition Dispersed Camping Task Force. Currently,
- 41:19Speaker 1: the forest requires campers to move at least five miles
- 41:22Speaker 1: after fourteen days in one location. This is just to
- 41:24Speaker 1: prevent you from being cute right and moving into an
- 41:27Speaker 1: area and then like moving to the other side of
- 41:30Speaker 1: the valley, to the other side of the meadow and
- 41:33Speaker 1: staying another fourteen days, and then moving back to the
- 41:35Speaker 1: other side of the meadow and staying another fourteen days. Currently,
- 41:39Speaker 1: the forest requires campers to move at least five miles
- 41:42Speaker 1: after fourteen days in one location. However, many campers, trailers,
- 41:45Speaker 1: and recreational vehicles are left on the mountain unoccupied for
- 41:48Speaker 1: much longer than fourteen days. I'm aware of this where
- 41:52Speaker 1: and I've I've been guilty this in the past. We're
- 41:55Speaker 1: let's say you're gonna go camping for a weekend and
- 41:56Speaker 1: you want some really cherry spot that you know about.
- 42:00Speaker 1: You drive over on Wednesday and park the old camper
- 42:07Speaker 1: or you'll get to a spot and there's nothing there,
- 42:09Speaker 1: but it's old tent mm hm, like no coolers, no walk,
- 42:15Speaker 1: like an old tent, and that dude's like basically like
- 42:18Speaker 1: my spot. You back in a few days. So that's
- 42:25Speaker 1: when I go about cleaning up the forest, you know,
- 42:28Speaker 1: and just that's when you clean up. Yeah, like, oh,
- 42:29Speaker 1: someone's forgotten old. However, many campers, trailers, and recreational vehicles
- 42:34Speaker 1: are left on the mountain unoccupied for much longer than
- 42:37Speaker 1: fourteen days, which can cause frustration for other recreationalists who
- 42:40Speaker 1: are following the rules and seeking a new place to
- 42:43Speaker 1: camp in in fourteen days. One potential solution forwarded by
- 42:46Speaker 1: the task force is the implementation of a yearly sticker
- 42:51Speaker 1: all dispersed campers would have to purchase. The sticker would
- 42:56Speaker 1: make it as as these UH personnel for Service personnel
- 43:00Speaker 1: are saying, the sticker would make it much easier to
- 43:03Speaker 1: contact users who are violating the forests fourteen day rule.
- 43:08Speaker 1: In addition, the Forest is considering extending the fourteen days
- 43:13Speaker 1: stay order throughout the year. Currently, the order extends from
- 43:17Speaker 1: June one through September thirty. When I was turkey hunting
- 43:21Speaker 1: recently up in the northwest corner of the state, I
- 43:25Speaker 1: found where a dispersed camper had basically set up a community.
- 43:29Speaker 1: I mean they were there to stay on National forest land.
- 43:36Speaker 1: I imagine that it looked like they had spent the
- 43:38Speaker 1: entire winter there. The order extends June one through September thirty,
- 43:44Speaker 1: and campers can stay in one place for as long
- 43:46Speaker 1: as they want outside of those four months. Bighorn National
- 43:50Speaker 1: Forest is currently the only national forest without year round
- 43:53Speaker 1: limits on dispersed camping. Guys real mad about it. He's
- 43:59Speaker 1: mad about the fees they want to change. What he
- 44:01Speaker 1: says is going on. The Bighorn National Forest plans to
- 44:06Speaker 1: charge in order to disperse camp on public lands. This
- 44:09Speaker 1: is an abuse of the FIG program and a blatant
- 44:13Speaker 1: shake down of public landowners. Let folks know about this issue.
- 44:19Speaker 1: Encourage them to write to their centers before the Forest
- 44:22Speaker 1: Service gets drunk on fees. Please don't use my name
- 44:26Speaker 1: or email. I gotta I gotta think on that one.
- 44:33Speaker 1: Anyone got immediate? Yeah, I don't have a problem with it.
- 44:36Speaker 1: A twenty stick are you throw on there to go
- 44:40Speaker 1: camping on national forests? What's the what's the big deal?
- 44:45Speaker 1: I agree, I'm right. I'm right there with you, Brody.
- 44:47Speaker 1: I feel that we take it for granted just because
- 44:50Speaker 1: it's public land. We think that it's should be just
- 44:52Speaker 1: a free for all. I mean, they should be for free.
- 44:55Speaker 1: But those roads that you drive in to access your
- 44:58Speaker 1: public lands with guests, what they have to be maintained
- 45:01Speaker 1: and the people that do that need to be paid.
- 45:03Speaker 1: It's not like the Forest Services rolling in cash, you
- 45:06Speaker 1: know what I mean? Yeah? I mean, did Carl Malcolm
- 45:09Speaker 1: have a new truck when you guys saw him recently,
- 45:12Speaker 1: Steve's not listening anymore. He's onto the next article. But like,
- 45:18Speaker 1: my job is to keep the show rolling. So I'm
- 45:21Speaker 1: just looking ahead, thinking, and you guys can talk about
- 45:24Speaker 1: what you need to talk about. Um, I want we're
- 45:27Speaker 1: gonna get into this big gass white tailed mini here. Mark,
- 45:29Speaker 1: what do you think you wrote a whole book about
- 45:31Speaker 1: how public lands are managed? Yeah, I think it's a
- 45:34Speaker 1: hell of a deal. I think twenty bucks for a
- 45:35Speaker 1: year worth of camping, that's pretty good. But now as
- 45:38Speaker 1: good a deal as zero. Yeah, but you could say
- 45:42Speaker 1: it remains a hell of a deal. Man. I think
- 45:44Speaker 1: it's not a bad idea that we'd be a little
- 45:45Speaker 1: more invested in them. Like you guys both said, there's
- 45:48Speaker 1: a lot of there's a lot of costs to managing
- 45:50Speaker 1: those places. Let's put our money where our more. I
- 45:53Speaker 1: think we should add like a half a cent federal
- 45:56Speaker 1: sales tax. Oh. I would support that. That would just
- 46:00Speaker 1: directly go to all public lands. I had to give
- 46:04Speaker 1: a talk down in Florida the are day, and you
- 46:07Speaker 1: know how everybody, how it's become, to use Tom mcgwain's expression,
- 46:11Speaker 1: it's become over observed Pittman, Robertson has become over observed
- 46:17Speaker 1: among hunters, right like every hunter on the planet now
- 46:20Speaker 1: likes to point out Pittman Robertson contributions, which for people
- 46:25Speaker 1: have been hiding under living under a rock. Um. There
- 46:29Speaker 1: is a federal excise tax on all guns and AMMO
- 46:32Speaker 1: and other sporting goods equipment to the tune of about
- 46:35Speaker 1: thirteen percent. So when you buy a gun or you
- 46:37Speaker 1: buy any AMMO, you're paying at exercise tax that goes
- 46:41Speaker 1: to support wildlife conservation, and most of the money comes
- 46:45Speaker 1: from recreational shooters. What is higher comes from recreational shooters.
- 46:52Speaker 1: So a new Jersey cat lady who buys a pocket
- 46:54Speaker 1: pistol is kicking into Pittman Robertson. She might also belong
- 46:58Speaker 1: to Peter, but when she bought the pocket pistol of
- 47:02Speaker 1: that morning went to wildlife work. So I don't remember
- 47:06Speaker 1: what the hell it is. Someone tell me what it is. Then,
- 47:10Speaker 1: overwhelming majority of the money is from recreational shooters, not hunters.
- 47:16Speaker 1: Where's that going with this? Oh? I was pointing out
- 47:18Speaker 1: when I gave a talk in Florida the other day
- 47:19Speaker 1: about the future of hunting. I said, I invited the
- 47:23Speaker 1: audience to ponder, can you as much as hunters like
- 47:27Speaker 1: to celebrate Pittman Robertson industry people celebrate Pittman Robinson. Can
- 47:31Speaker 1: you imagine what they would do to you today if
- 47:36Speaker 1: you said, I got an idea, right, here's my idea.
- 47:40Speaker 1: Every time you buy a gun and every time you
- 47:44Speaker 1: buy AMMO, let's make it that there's a thirteen percent
- 47:49Speaker 1: federal tax on that purchase. It would never happen, and
- 47:52Speaker 1: it'll go to wildlife habitat. Dude. They would they would
- 47:56Speaker 1: hang you. Oh dude, it would make they would hang you.
- 48:01Speaker 1: It would make the deal that went down at the
- 48:04Speaker 1: country's capital not too long ago. It would make that
- 48:06Speaker 1: look like a little rainbow gathering. I think for so
- 48:12Speaker 1: long most people hunters or recreational shooters didn't even know
- 48:17Speaker 1: they were contributing that way. You know, it's just like
- 48:21Speaker 1: a thing that became. But no, but we'd love to celebrate.
- 48:25Speaker 1: And now I'm like, okay, how would you receive it
- 48:28Speaker 1: being increased? They would hang you. It just wouldn't happen. Well,
- 48:34Speaker 1: you're seeing it with the backpack tax ideas for you know, backpackers, hikers, bikers,
- 48:40Speaker 1: The idea of doing similar tax on that kind of gear,
- 48:42Speaker 1: and year after year that keeps getting shut down. What
- 48:47Speaker 1: about a duck stamp for public lands? Like that kind
- 48:50Speaker 1: of approach. I would love it if someone now came
- 48:53Speaker 1: and said, hey, man, if you want to hunt ducks,
- 48:55Speaker 1: you gotta kick down. What does the duck stamp right now?
- 48:58Speaker 1: Do you want to hunt ducks? Actually actually bucks? Starting
- 49:01Speaker 1: right now? All goes to the feds. Yeah, but you
- 49:05Speaker 1: don't think that like, not just for ducks, but for
- 49:08Speaker 1: for public land hunters in general. Why would have to
- 49:11Speaker 1: be hunters? Why wouldn't it just be everyone who uses
- 49:13Speaker 1: public lands? Well, I think that it's even better, but
- 49:16Speaker 1: just because I think because it's not just the money
- 49:18Speaker 1: to be the administrative the administrative stuff like so for instance,
- 49:22Speaker 1: my my my wife likes to go hike the m okay,
- 49:25Speaker 1: she'd also be like, hm, I need to do what right?
- 49:29Speaker 1: It would be like an administrate because you're you're take
- 49:31Speaker 1: like hunters are. It's ingrained in hunters. If there's like
- 49:34Speaker 1: this whole regulatory structure and it's like everyone knows like
- 49:36Speaker 1: you gotta go jump through all these hoops and and
- 49:39Speaker 1: like dudes that ride their mountain bikes, they're sort of
- 49:41Speaker 1: like blissfully unaware. They're blissfully unaware of all the ship
- 49:45Speaker 1: everybody else has to do. Right, do you gotta get
- 49:48Speaker 1: a permit and past these like classes? And if you can't,
- 49:52Speaker 1: their heads and melt. Still a good idea? Sure? I
- 49:57Speaker 1: support it. I support I think it. You buy a
- 50:00Speaker 1: mountain bike, there should be every mountain bike and every
- 50:04Speaker 1: trail shoes should have a excise tax fifty big number.
- 50:09Speaker 1: But any mountain bike? What about an e bike? All right?
- 50:20Speaker 1: The huff? First? Tell us how you got How do
- 50:23Speaker 1: you get into the music business? I left my hometown
- 50:27Speaker 1: when I was nineteen, two months after graduating high school
- 50:30Speaker 1: and packed car, packed truck up, moved down to do
- 50:35Speaker 1: what you like? Moved to Nashville nineteen. Didn't no person
- 50:39Speaker 1: down there? How old are you? No? Then? What happened
- 50:42Speaker 1: when you did that? Where'd you go live? I just
- 50:45Speaker 1: had a one barroom apartment, started playing open mikes, uh,
- 50:49Speaker 1: met some people started writing Met Luke and two years
- 50:52Speaker 1: after moving to town and started going on the road
- 50:55Speaker 1: with him. Hang with it, those guys, and the rest
- 50:59Speaker 1: is history. You see like America even more. It's crazy.
- 51:02Speaker 1: So you're obviously playing guitar and singing and doing all
- 51:05Speaker 1: that stuff a good bit before you left town moved out,
- 51:09Speaker 1: like when you were in your teenage years. I mean,
- 51:11Speaker 1: I started playing guitar when I was twelve. I wrote
- 51:14Speaker 1: my first song when I was fourteen, and hold room.
- 51:16Speaker 1: You killed your first deer that's twelve, twelve years old,
- 51:19Speaker 1: killed my first squirrel when I was ten. You can
- 51:22Speaker 1: start playing guitar because of that. But you killed a
- 51:24Speaker 1: deer at twelve and started playing guitar. What was your
- 51:27Speaker 1: subject matter? What do you mean like, what was this
- 51:30Speaker 1: sort of your theme of your music? Just life, small
- 51:33Speaker 1: town stuff girls, not hunting. Oh yeah, hunting was in there.
- 51:37Speaker 1: Two trucks, hunting, fishing. Where's the guitar over there? Hey?
- 51:43Speaker 1: Over a guitar? CRN. I want you just give us
- 51:46Speaker 1: a little sample so as we get into the story
- 51:48Speaker 1: of this world record, white Tail, the beginning of it.
- 51:51Speaker 1: Whatever the hell? Any song have you written a song
- 51:55Speaker 1: about that buck yet? I have, But give us a
- 51:59Speaker 1: little liock of that. I'll play one that. Oh that's
- 52:04Speaker 1: just kind of Phili help you get set up there?
- 52:06Speaker 1: What do you need to do? Phil Goung No, he's
- 52:09Speaker 1: gonna give us a little teaser and then we'll have
- 52:10Speaker 1: a full song later, Okay, right now, it's just a teaser,
- 52:16Speaker 1: ladies and gentlemen. So you know, like the guy that
- 52:18Speaker 1: killed the world record white tail typical white tail or
- 52:21Speaker 1: sorry national typical white tail record, I should be fishing
- 52:28Speaker 1: somewhere on a boat, floating something cold. Can't you really?
- 52:35Speaker 1: In five pound largemouth? Good time? Grand? Yeah, I should
- 52:41Speaker 1: be fishing. Little teaser, little teaser. So you learn in
- 52:46Speaker 1: high school, packed up, move to Nashville. Were you surprised
- 52:52Speaker 1: when I said he started to make it? I don't
- 52:54Speaker 1: know about making it, but I mean it was just
- 52:56Speaker 1: cool to be in there. Do you have a day job? No?
- 53:00Speaker 1: Play music full time and right full time? And I
- 53:02Speaker 1: might call that making it? Yeah, I guess so, But
- 53:05Speaker 1: what you want? What do you call making it? I
- 53:08Speaker 1: don't know. Number one, that's making it for me? That's
- 53:17Speaker 1: what I want, That's that's what you're shooting for. Well,
- 53:19Speaker 1: I think there's like degrees of it. But I think
- 53:21Speaker 1: if you can, if you set out in the arts
- 53:24Speaker 1: and you get to where you don't have to do
- 53:25Speaker 1: anything else, that's making it Part one. I agree, Yeah,
- 53:30Speaker 1: but you're still hunted. You still went hunting back home yep.
- 53:35Speaker 1: Did you start Do you hunt more where you came
- 53:37Speaker 1: from or more down in Nashville, Indiana? Yeah, that's where
- 53:40Speaker 1: I'm at now. I've moved down there, But then I
- 53:42Speaker 1: moved back at like twenty four and then I was
- 53:44Speaker 1: just traveling back and forth, going every other week, every
- 53:47Speaker 1: other two weeks or so. So, yeah, I live in
- 53:49Speaker 1: Indiana now. But was that part of your plan to
- 53:51Speaker 1: go back there once you kind of got a foot
- 53:53Speaker 1: in the door. Uh, it always was. I just didn't
- 53:55Speaker 1: know how soon I would, you know, I didn't know
- 53:59Speaker 1: if it'd be thirty five. You're married. I got a girlfriend.
- 54:04Speaker 1: How long you had a girl? From? Four years? You
- 54:06Speaker 1: couldn't get married to her? Oh? Yeah, that's the that's
- 54:08Speaker 1: the next step. What's her first name? Mackayley? Okay? Uh?
- 54:13Speaker 1: What's the property you were hunting on? H five acre
- 54:17Speaker 1: hog farm? Same farm I killed my first scorel on
- 54:20Speaker 1: where I killed my first deer. Used to vaccinate hogs
- 54:24Speaker 1: on it when I was a kid. Who olds the farm,
- 54:27Speaker 1: big farmer, You shouldn't be saying that, man, Well, everybody
- 54:31Speaker 1: already knows in my hometown, there's already Pete. Well, there's
- 54:33Speaker 1: a lot more people than your home towel his name
- 54:40Speaker 1: your absolutely not. Would you not say that? I'd better
- 54:45Speaker 1: say than sorry? Yeah? Why and why are you guys
- 54:49Speaker 1: so adamant about that? Because on X makes it so
- 54:52Speaker 1: damn easy, Yanny, I could find your property in one
- 54:54Speaker 1: minute from now if I wanted, I understand, But would
- 54:58Speaker 1: you uh, well, you'd have to know my wife's name.
- 55:02Speaker 1: But that's true. What do you think is gonna happen?
- 55:06Speaker 1: Maybe maybe started, Maybe there's like a quarter mile away.
- 55:12Speaker 1: Maybe the neighbor has his farm, he's already have, he's
- 55:17Speaker 1: already I mean, people already know where it is. We're
- 55:19Speaker 1: already finding deer with their heads cut off, I mean
- 55:23Speaker 1: right outside of this property, so people in our Yeah,
- 55:26Speaker 1: it's it's terrible. So yeah, I've already been in contact
- 55:31Speaker 1: with d n R about it, and I dude, we've
- 55:33Speaker 1: already found three deer with their heads cut off after this,
- 55:35Speaker 1: So it's brutal, like they're people are are who would
- 55:39Speaker 1: be out shooting deer moving over in that region at night.
- 55:43Speaker 1: People's neighbors around have been finding people on trail cams
- 55:48Speaker 1: nate at late at night. It's crazy, all because of
- 55:52Speaker 1: a deer. So in order to not add to that,
- 55:54Speaker 1: Phil should bleep it out. Yeah, maybe we should leave
- 55:57Speaker 1: it out. Doesn't give it a body years place. It's
- 56:01Speaker 1: my dad's one of my dad's best friends. And you
- 56:04Speaker 1: grew up on that property. He did too, pretty much.
- 56:07Speaker 1: I mean once them two became buddies in high school.
- 56:10Speaker 1: I mean they were hunting together into their twenties thirties,
- 56:13Speaker 1: and whenever I came and how how would you describe
- 56:16Speaker 1: the property? I mean they raised some crops on it
- 56:18Speaker 1: or yeah, it's probably crops and timber. And what would
- 56:27Speaker 1: be like a normal deer that gets killed there? Well,
- 56:29Speaker 1: my biggest was a hundred thirty four inch that I
- 56:31Speaker 1: killed in named him Larry. And did you guys feel
- 56:35Speaker 1: like that was a big buck? Oh? That was like,
- 56:37Speaker 1: oh my gosh, I was. Yeah. I was calling my dad, Hey,
- 56:40Speaker 1: you gotta get off four man, you gotta come see this, dear.
- 56:42Speaker 1: You know. But his uh the Catur County Highway Department
- 56:47Speaker 1: and uh, but his biggest one, which was the biggest
- 56:50Speaker 1: on the property hunt and which what I was a
- 56:53Speaker 1: freshman whenever he killed that, well, so like you know, no,
- 56:58Speaker 1: I mean not even close to what got but I
- 57:00Speaker 1: mean like like good deer. Yeah, there's always good deer there.
- 57:03Speaker 1: But I mean, our only rule is fifteen inches wide.
- 57:06Speaker 1: If he looks like he's fifteen inches, you can shoot him.
- 57:09Speaker 1: And then dude does the hard farmer hunted too. He's
- 57:11Speaker 1: got other properties that he farms, and he goes and
- 57:14Speaker 1: hunts the cabin woods. It's just another another one down
- 57:17Speaker 1: the road. How many guys are hunt pretty much just
- 57:21Speaker 1: me and my dad and my nephew East and just
- 57:23Speaker 1: got into it. He killed his first deer with me
- 57:26Speaker 1: this past year. And uh he's seven, so me him
- 57:29Speaker 1: and then maybe two other guys on occasions, but pretty
- 57:32Speaker 1: much just me and my dad. Did you guys run
- 57:34Speaker 1: trail cameras out there? I don't run trail cams because
- 57:38Speaker 1: you just don't. Because you don't. I used to in
- 57:41Speaker 1: high school. Uh just never really do no more. I
- 57:44Speaker 1: just I felt like when I was in high school,
- 57:46Speaker 1: I always I would always go to where that camera was.
- 57:50Speaker 1: So I just decided I'm just gonna go deer hunting.
- 57:53Speaker 1: That's just kind of what I started doing. Does the
- 57:55Speaker 1: property have some like historical tree stands that your dad
- 57:57Speaker 1: hunted out at one time and now you hunt him? Yeah?
- 57:59Speaker 1: So I God, I know the property like the back
- 58:01Speaker 1: of my hand. So I just kind of where I've
- 58:03Speaker 1: killed dear seen deer, where Dad I killed has killed
- 58:05Speaker 1: dear senior. I just go put my climber up, or
- 58:08Speaker 1: I got four set stands on the property and just
- 58:10Speaker 1: kind of mix it up. Hunt a gun season, archery season. Yeah,
- 58:17Speaker 1: did you used to hunt with the regular bowl before
- 58:18Speaker 1: you start hunting the cross bowl? Yeah? To gross on
- 58:22Speaker 1: my shoulder, I still got him. I want to fill him. Yeah,
- 58:27Speaker 1: where are they on there? I don't want to right
- 58:31Speaker 1: back here? You can feel they just said I can
- 58:34Speaker 1: get it cut out, But it's right on some nerve
- 58:36Speaker 1: right there. But it's one's growing on the bone that
- 58:41Speaker 1: the new one is. And that's that's why I think
- 58:43Speaker 1: I can't get a bow back no more, because sometimes
- 58:45Speaker 1: it'll catch like I'll get sometimes I'll be watching TV
- 58:48Speaker 1: and my right arm will just go tingly. So can
- 58:53Speaker 1: anybody hold with the crossbow in Indian or do you
- 58:54Speaker 1: have to get like a doctor's per No, you can now. Yeah.
- 58:57Speaker 1: So I bow hunted from fourteen to like twenty, and
- 59:01Speaker 1: then I bought a used crossbow from my buddy. What
- 59:04Speaker 1: kind of crossboards you get? What the heck is Striker
- 59:08Speaker 1: Striker crossbow. So I've been using that ever since you
- 59:12Speaker 1: got a nicer one, since shooting that huffbuck. I don't
- 59:18Speaker 1: Striker hasn't reached out. I don't think they make them
- 59:21Speaker 1: no more. I think they were made by bow Tech,
- 59:23Speaker 1: but I don't think they Yeah, so huh, yeah, they
- 59:28Speaker 1: want to remake them. I guess. Now, do you hear
- 59:31Speaker 1: is there like a network of hunters in the area
- 59:34Speaker 1: where you're hearing about what's going on of this deer? No? No, no,
- 59:37Speaker 1: like like in the vicinity of this property. Yeah, and
- 59:42Speaker 1: we're in Southeast Indiana, Southeast Indiana, in the vicinity of
- 59:46Speaker 1: this property. Like, and I know that you got like
- 59:49Speaker 1: you got a one thirties buck. Okay, your old man
- 59:52Speaker 1: got a one fifties buck? What you're did you get that?
- 59:55Speaker 1: That was I was a freshman, so twenty ten maybe. Meanwhile,
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: are you hearing like, um oh, Joel blow On the
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: next place over got a one ninety Yeah you hear
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: stuff like that, But I mean it's you know, a
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: hundred fifty in hundred sixties pushing it. You're like, damn,
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: he got a hundred sixty inches deer. You know, like
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: usually about one thirty to one fifty is like the
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: big deer. It hasn't gotten better through your lifetime like
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: so many places have. Yeah, I mean it went for
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: about two years after I graduated high school. It was
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: pretty bad because we just took a ton of deer
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: off of it. When I was a kid man, I
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: was just you know, whatever it was. And so I
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: actually let it go for about two years and then
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: I started hunting it again. And yeah, so I was
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: hunting my sister's property a county over letting some just
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: I was just letting it because I wasn't seen any deer,
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: so I was just like, let's just let it go. Um.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: And then my nephew Easton started getting into it just
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: this past year, and I was like, which I had
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: hunted at the killed that one thirty four, But that
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: was the first year that I really started hunting it again.
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: Was in got back into it, hunting two weeks straight,
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: just trying to beat my one thirty four, and the
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: first shooter that walked out was moose. So on this
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: on this topic of how things have changed, a big
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: change happened in Indiana. I mean you probably know the
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: day better than maybe ten years ago. Eight nine ten
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: years ago, Indiana switched to a one buck a year rule.
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: So now all that's no matter what it was right
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: before I started hunting. So when I was twelve, it
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: was one buck, one dough and then it went to
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: like one buck two does. But before then you could
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: kill two bucks. I believe that was before I was
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: deer hunting. But so the there's been a lot of
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: talk about how much Indiana has bumped up in the
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: record books and stuff like that since switching to that.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: It's become much more of a quote unquote trophy destination
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: because those bucks. A whole lot more people are thinking
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: before shooting because they know they'll be done, and I do, like,
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: I want to shoot the first one I see, and
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: then with my second tag. Look at Michigan, you heard
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: that a lot. So that was the first buck you saw?
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: That was the first shooter I saw it. I was
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: on day seven or eight, um days. Maybe I'm jumping ahead,
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: but no, I'm gonna say it wasn't you Can you
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: wait for the for it to get ready for that?
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: Do you know what I'm I'll wait? What is it?
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: On that line of thinking? Here? Does it take us
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: back a little bit it's on the line of thinking
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: of this buck, like he said he shot. It was
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: the first buck he saw. I have a question about that,
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: but it could have been asking answer right now. Wait, yeah,
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: we're just not to the buck yet. Well I thought
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: we were, he said it was he jumped? Did he jumped?
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: I don't know what to do. The man's just a songwriter.
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: What I do with my hands. You'll end up asking
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: the same question I bet. Oh, yeah, I have no doubt.
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: I just want to like. But then you get all
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: the glory for asking. No. No, I want to ask
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: when we get to the deer. I'm not gonna ask
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: sliding the note. Sliding the note when I'm trying to
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: establish here is I'm trying to establish um to what degree.
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: There's like a rumor around town or whatever about an
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: absolute toad running around people been seeing I had never
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: even heard about him. Tell after I killed him, that's
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: what no one at church is like, holy shit, and
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: I don't know whatever. There was only two people that
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: in my area. They came by the next day and
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: was like, start showing me trail camp pictures videos. They
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: secretly knew about it. They were sharing it with us,
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: you know, like there, oh, here's a one forty we've
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: been after. But nobody knew about this deer. It had
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: been pretty quiet, but I think everybody knew about the deer,
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: just no one's willing to hear that. People were some
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: people were aware of for two to three years, were
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: aware of this deer and I didn't even but they
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: weren't blabbing about it. Yeah, they weren't blabbing about it.
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: It wasn't Did they know that we're spending a lot
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: of time on your place? No, they didn't know. I mean,
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: it was this deer was traveling so far, dude, it
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: was It's crazy. He we got confirmed eight miles whoa Yeah,
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: did this buck have a name by other people? Yeah?
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: So the guy eight miles he had him as a
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: mega time junior. Yeah, apparently five six years prior there
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: was a one that that guy killed that they believe
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: was this the sire this genetics? So I don't know,
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: Mark Ken the guy. Is he the one who named it?
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: Legati J Mark's drunk, that's like, yeah, So then I
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: named him moose after I well, actually whenever I saw
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: him coming the originally like that's a freaking moose man.
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: That's just stup. Can we can we go back to
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: the eight mile away guy? Yeah? Who's this guy? His names?
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: You want to bleep that? Give me? And what's his story? Dustin? Can?
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: I if I were you, I wouldn't even be talking
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: about my sister's property one county away. That's too specific.
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: I don't get too shook up about it. It's because
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: this is a great time I think to bring up
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: how Dustin is not the same hunter that Spencer and
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: Mark are, right, we need to talk about those differences
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: and why these guys like right now their panties are
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: literally in a wad because I'm saying here, like yeah,
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: it's good. Yeah, it's like shooting. I just go deer hunting.
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: I love deer hunting. Good. So, like you're apprehension based
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: on the fact that people are just gonna descend on
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: this corner about Indian hard to like find a property
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: hunt that I'm really stoked on, whether it's public land
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: or by permission or whatever, that I would not tell
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: my wife like what I'm doing, or like what property
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: I'm on, because that's like how like he fell out
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: of a tree about died, laid there for days because
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: he didn't like to tell anyone where he hunts, becau,
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: his wife didn't even know. His wife didn't even know
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: how to, didn't have any idea where to say. When
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: he never came home, She's like, I don't know he's
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: out hunting. The stakes are that high. Yeah, but this
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: happens all the time. I mean, I'm sure it happens
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: out west too, but locally in the Midwest, it happens
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: to myself. I've got guys trying to least stuff around me,
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: or at least stuff that I have access to for free.
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: They find out that you hunt there, they've seen what
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: you've killed there, and all of a sudden's gone, or
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: they hear from the lantern, well, I'm being offered five
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: thousand dollars by this other guy. I got to share
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: something a little behind the scenes. If he was like,
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: if he let me tell a story, I'll try to
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: make quick one night. Like, here's advice for anyone with kids,
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: anyone married with kids. If you want your wife to
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: not be mad at you, take your kids to go
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: do whatever you're going to do. No one ever got
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: mad at a spouse who had took all the kids
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: to do something. You're like bulletproof. Except one night, uh,
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: me and my buddy Tony took all of our kids.
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: So we had a shipload of kids and we took
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: clan digging and things got carried away and we were
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: gone way late on a school night, and I got
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: on the phone driving and got yelled at. And then
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: he got a call and got yelled at. And he
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: said to me, um, if they if this is his quote,
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: if we were the way they wanted us to be,
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: they wouldn't like us. My wife's like, yeah, I would,
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: But point being if he is like like, oh, like that,
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: he wouldn't be on the show because I would have
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: been like just a if he was a big buck
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: blow hard, that's a big buck blow hard. I wouldn't
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: have been like wanting to talk to him. I like
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: big buck blowhards. What I'm saying, it wouldn't have been
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: like I wouldn't have I wouldn't have been an entertaining
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: story to me. Yeah, I get that. Are you jealous
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: that he has a buck named after him? Now? I
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: don't have a buck name after me. You do? You
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: never seen it? It's on my water, But I imagine,
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: oh right, the buck I killed when you were off
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: in the hospital. Oh, that was the one that helped
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: you pack. I made a sticker and it was called
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: the Ronella Bucks. Yeah. He made a really nice decal,
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: the kind of you like put the whole decal behind
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: it on something and then you ate a couple of
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: minutes from it in and then you peel that big
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: plastic people off and the decal is just left. Well,
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: Steve ran around with the whole thing on because I
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: didn't know that, Like, hey man, I, unless you're really
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: trying to protect that decal, you know, you can peel
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: that other part off. And I look to do it. It
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: It was too late to kind of ruin the did
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: the decail have you like fidgeting with your belt and
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: your pants? You my pants around my knees. Uh. The
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: guy that was eight miles away, um, he was onto it. Yeah.
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: So he came like three or four days after I
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: killed this deer, and I got a Facebook message from him,
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: was like, Hey, dude, this is gonna be crazy, but
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: I hunt over here. I'm pretty sure I was hunting
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: that deer, you know, And I had already had a guy.
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: I'm not gonna say the name, so we don't have
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: to bleep it out. But so this I'm writing all
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: this down. I kind of a shark here Bill Bill
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: sell all this Bill is gonna go in alive and
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: started selling unbleeped the unbleeped cut. Yeah. I've been doing
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: it for about the two and a half years now.
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: It's nothing new. Website pops up dot com. Yeah. But
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: uh so he come over the next day because he
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: wanted to see this dear. He knew that was that
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: was the deer. You know, he had this deer after
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: talking to him in his sights the year before as
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: an eleven pointer, guests him at about two yards freehand,
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: couldn't pull the trigger. So he comes over and oh,
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: he just put his head down right when I opened
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: up at walk in cooler. He just goes, that's him,
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: because that's him, And I said yeah, And then he
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: starts showing me all the cams you know, trail camp
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: picks videos. Oh yeah, so I mean he had three
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: years to three years of him. And then, like I said,
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: three or four days later, come down. He's like twenty
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: five minutes away and uh starts showing me from Moose
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: as a three and a half year old ten pointer
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: two an eleven and then into twelve when I killed him,
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: He jumped from one seventy five to whenever I killed you.
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: A lot of people have his sheds. One guy found
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: so what is his name? I don't even know his
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: they shoote. I can't remember. But anyways, he brought him
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: to the Indianapolis show. I had moose at and uh
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: he side by, he said, I found side by side
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: and he had him scored there one with giving him
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: a twenty inch spread. Never from the year before. That's
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: from the year before. W'd you kill him? Was it
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: during the rut? Yeah? It was November four, so he
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: was he was wandering, he was, Yeah, he was walking
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: right through the woods first week in November. Our buddy Clay,
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: he's got a great story. It kind of shows one
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: of the things that's cool about Clay is, uh, he
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: was after a big giant buck in his neighborhood. And
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: he lives in a you know, like it's not like
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: big egg arias, right, little chunks here and there, and um,
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: it's hard to keep track of a deer, right. Yeah.
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: But anyways, he's aware of a big giant buck and
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: find some of its sheds, and then he hears of
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: a guy right, the got it and he was like, damn,
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: you know, like the story's over right. Yeah, but but
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: Clay brought him and gave him the match and sheds
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: a couple of sets of sheds. That's pretty dude. Yeah, yeah, Anya,
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: your bud. That dude didn't give I was hoping i'd
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: get him. You need to subtenly suggest he listened to
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: this episode so he hear's that story. It's a little guilty. Yeah,
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: I know. I've talked to him at the Indian Apple
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: Show and he said there's too much people like wanting
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: these sheds. So I was just like, you know, collectors
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: and stuff. So I was just like, well, let me
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: just make some replicause of him or something. You know.
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: Do you know the last time this buck was spotted
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: by someone else, whether he's on trail camera, pers like,
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: how how far he came to wind up and see
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: how this is flowing? Yeah? So what was the question again? Yeah?
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: How far did this buck like travel as of late
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: before you killed him? Uh? Well, I mean so the
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: only time that we have him confirmed at eight miles
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: away is only December through February. That's the only time
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: and then on But I thought he had him, he
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: had him in his sights. No, no, no, this is
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: who's adjacent to my right beside my property that I hate.
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: The neighbor had him, the neighbor adjacent to my the
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: woods eye. And he didn't come tell you. Yeah, he hadn't.
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: He didn't come to the next day after I killed it,
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: and he saw pictures and goes, that's him, your own neighbor,
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: own neighbor. Now he's a cool guy though, But so
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: when you see him, you're like, hey, what's going on, man,
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: how's der hunting been? Well? I never really, we never
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: were che Yeah that's the thing, you red, Harry. Yeah,
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: but you there was no two in talk about any deer,
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: Like nobody knew about it. If I was your neighbor,
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: I had been like listeners, a big one forty. If
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: you see him, yeah, I would shooting him and get
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: out of the woods. Don't hesitate, get out of the
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: woods and don't come back, because that's it. Yeah, So
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: why were you in this spot on this property? And
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: like why did that buck want to be there? What
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: was he doing? So going back to pictures, So after
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: that next day brought some pictures over and so his
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: first daylight was October sevente. That was his first daylight
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: he got of him. And that's whenever I was like,
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: I gotta start taking work off, you know, like it's
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: him on a camera camera. Yes, what he saw in October.
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: October sevente was his first daylight. So then so he's
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: coming into the rusting to show up. Yeah, five and
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: a half, you're always starting to show up in the daylight.
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: And uh, so I come home, but you didn't know that.
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: I did not know, So I just come home. I
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: always take off the last I don't do nothing the
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: last week of October. In the first week in November,
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: I go deer hunting. That's all. I don't write no songs.
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: I do it from a tree stand. But just write
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: him in your head. Yeah, I'll just get on my
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: phone and write. But uh, you're not up there like
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: in the tethered saddle. I don't have a sixth straight
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: with very anything. But so he was getting picks of
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: him constantly October and I shot him on November four.
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: Pretty crazy, did he he never like had a close
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: encounter or nope not the year before he did? Was
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: that two yards was the only time he's saw him
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: so he had been getting pitted. But like I said,
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: I didn't know about So I hunt that last week
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: in November or last week. You're like a serious enough
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: deer hunter where you're like, come the rut, I'm hitting
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: two weeks hard. Oh yeah, yeah, I deer hunt all
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: all the time. So, um, the reason why I was
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: there was I had I was on day seven or eight,
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: and I got four set stands on that property. So
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: my nephew killed. How far is this from your house? Okay? Yeah,
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: so you don't need to go stay somewhere, you're just hunt,
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: you're hunting at home. Yeah. So uh, I took my
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: nephew out on Halloween because he killed his first dough
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: in September, which was you season, first deer he ever killed,
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: first time, first time ever going out, put twenty five
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: grains of powder in a fifty cow and let him
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: smoke on fifteen yards. So it's pretty cool. That's great. Yeah,
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: so the first time. So he's he's way ahead of
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: way ahead of where I am. So uh, like I said,
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: I've been hunting that whole week that last week of October. Uh,
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: And on Halloween, I took Easton out again. So he
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: kill his first buck, so he could have easily killed
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: this deer because this was before I shot him. He
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: could have been he could have been the guy. So
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: I told him, like route when getting sand I said, uh, Eastern,
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: like your your buck hunting today? First buck comes by
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: and he, you know, he's saying he just went to
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: bash Pro for the first time how many weeks ago,
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: and he was like, hey, Dusty, uncle, Dusty, wouldn't be
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: crazy if we killed a big buck and got it
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: in the bass Pro shop. Literally said that. I started
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: laughing at him. I'm like, Eastern, I'm like, that's not
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: gonna happen. I said, But first deer comes through with
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: some you know, horns on his head, you can shoot it.
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: And he killed a five pointer about nine o'clock that
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: some more that morning, and I killed a dough right after.
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: So what's the five poinner? Is that a two by
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: three or five five? Yeah? He had one on one side,
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: two on the other, and then two little I'm the
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: blank by blank crowd here just more specific helps out folks. Yeah,
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: I've switched to that, but come on, it was a
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: little deer, but it was his first buck, so it's
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: pretty cool, you know. So I'm buck hunting. So four
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: days later, I'm going through these four set stands, you know,
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: just depending on whend, how the weather is. And then
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: so you're being like you're being serious. Yeah, I mean
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: you're playing the wind and thinking it's like I don't
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: get two. It's like I go deer hunting, you know,
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: it's just it's deer hunting using any cover sent I
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: use heat wave, heat wave cover center calm. It's a
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: calming scent, heats it up to like a hundred seven
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: degrees and disperses. What do you think about that mark?
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: It's pretty wild. That's not my cup of tea. But
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: teacher on, hold on, I thought that's my things. I
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: had no idea I was there. I can't see it work,
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: but yeah, so uh but that evening I just decided,
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: like I had been hitting those set stands pretty hard,
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: you know, with Easton, and then I was hunting by
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: myself too. So I also got a climber that I
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: got eighth grade year when I bought my first bow.
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: Still got it. It's the summit viper, and get a
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: new climber. No I ain't got it? Oh yeah I did.
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: Actually they didn't give me one they gave me to actually,
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: so anyways, that evening, I just I hunted, tell about noon,
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: uh tell lunch that morning on November four, one of
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: my set stands same one where Easton killed the five
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: pointer out of and uh so that hunt tel noon,
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: went home, got lunch, came back. I didn't even know
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: where I was gonna go. Times you get back up
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: in there about three. It's at three o'clock because whenever
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: I took the truck back and I took my climber
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: with me, I didn't even know where I was gonna go.
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: I just I'm gonna mix it up today. It was
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: about forty five. It was pretty warm day day in November,
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: and I was like, I'm just gonna go to this
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: west end of the farm, like I didn't even I
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: hadn't been back there in a while. And all those
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: other sets of the east side, right, Yes, all my
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: other ones are on the east side, so that I
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: usually the west side of the farm to the deer.
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: You know, I just let the property lines about a
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: hundred yards from where I set up from uh property line.
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: So yeah, got up about three o'clock that evening, you know,
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: put my sin up, got my climber up, saw it
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: off two limbs, and within three and a half hours
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: I killed the biggest deer in the USA. Didn't see
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: I didn't see a deer all evening. Didn't see a
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: deer all evening. And that was the first deer I seen.
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: All right, So why are we through? The actual moment? Brody?
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: Is your question ready to come? Right up? We're coming.
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: You already asked it. I knew you would the rumors
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: about the but like people, but I feel like you're
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: leaving a lot out for these two white tailed nerds
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: over here. Like there's no like funnel oak flat, like
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: oh yeah, hanging in the woods. No, so like I'm
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: up on the oak flat. Um yeah, so uh there's
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: the acorns were dropping. Oh yeah, what do you call
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: those do? What? What do you call patch or out patch?
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: We say, go up to the oak patch and you know?
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: Um so yeah, I got up three thirty whatever, didn't
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: see a deer and it was about six thirty right,
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: I'm talking right whenever the sun hit her up. Tell
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: me more about your setup. What do you mean what
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: you're hunting? You're hunting, You're hunting in the oak grove.
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: I got a creek running about and that's where I
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: seen about seventy yards uh to my south or to
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: my north, I mean, and then um, there's woods uh
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: all around I mean, and then about three yards back
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: is the cornfield. I mean, it's just a huge ass cornfield.
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: Like I said, it's timber and crops. But just getting nervous.
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: You ever climbed this tree in the past. Nope, this
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: was the first time because I saw two limbs off
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: going up like I had been around there before, but
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: I never got up in this tree. Have you been
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: up there that season? Huh? No, I hadn't been back
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: here since. This story is is so it's like a
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: like an archetype of a hunting story. There's so many
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: that go just like this, where either a new hunter
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: or someone like in your situation where you always hunt
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: one area and the first time you go to the
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: one spot, you never go to the big buck that
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: big bucks like I'll tell you on they never go
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: to exactly. So like there's there's people who say, like,
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: how how come is it that like the new hunter
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: that goes up for the first time ever shoots the
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: big giant buck or the kid or whatever, and it's
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: always because they would pick the place that all the
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: pros never go, or in this case, the one spot
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: for whatever reason you didn't go, and that's where they be.
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: He hangs out there and doesn't see people and treat
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: shooting arrows at them. They figured out, did you leave it?
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: Was it? Like? Can you say you never? You left
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: it for the deer? So like do you guys kind
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: of treat it as the sanctuary, like it's off limits
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: most of the time. I mean they're like, uh, one
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: of our buddies, he goes back here and hunts it.
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: But me, I just always just leave it over that
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: way because it's pretty thick that on the west side,
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: So I just always leave up for the deer and
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: stay on the east side. And that's where most of
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: the funnels aren't really but back there is that oak
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: flat and then the property line. So here's my yard.
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: You can hunt over there more often. Now in the future,
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: I think I'm going to. I think I'm going to
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: this season for sure, I'm gonna try it out. That
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: east side's gonna get real good again a year or
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: two off and then go back into year two. Okay,
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: with the last question, I'm gonna ask you in a
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: little bit. Is um, you realize it's all downhill from here?
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: Oh I know. Okay, so I'll ask you about that.
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: So so give me the moment. Oh shoot, so I'm
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: talking sitting there, you're like the song a second verse.
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: I actually did write a song that week, and uh
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: it's called Country is a Good Thing. And uh so
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: I was just sitting there on my phone, texting my girlfriend,
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: texting my dad. You know, just you know, no deer,
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: you've seen any deer? Nope? And I'm talking at dusk. Yeah,
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: it's it's right as the freaking I'm talking right one.
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: It's so crazy because right when the sun hit, like,
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: I got a text and I'm pulling my phone out
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: and he said any deer, And I'm about to text back,
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: and right whenever back, ain't seeing a deer. And right
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: as I'm about to text, I looked to my left
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: and I just see movement and all I saw was
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: these big gass antlers facing me with his head down
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: and he put his head up and that's when I went,
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: oh my god, that's a moose. And after I've seen him,
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: I didn't you know, you're thinking, where's this deer gonna go?
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: Is he How far out is he? He's about seventy yards.
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: First see him, and I'm just like, you know, I'm
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: blacking out. I'm just shaking like crazy, you know, I'd
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: never I'm thinking sev in deer, like nobody's gonna believe this,
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: and uh, he starts coming right to me in the No,
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: he's just he's just walking through the woods. Man. It
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: was it was where he's just moving saplings on his
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: way by I mean it was crazy, yeah, and so
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: no clue, had no idea. I had no idea, and
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: you had good wind, a good wind, and some good
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: scent heat waves it so so anyways, um, I didn't
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: even have time to range finding, so my range finders
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: in my pocket. But it's quick, like from when he
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: put his head up to me going wow, this is
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: the biggest deer I've ever seen in my life. He's
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: coming right up the ridge and I mean it's saplings
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: all over the place. So I'm just like, when do
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: I When am I gonna shoot him? So I just
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: whistled at him when he was maybe forty I was
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: just guessing forty yards because it was a minute, minute
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: and a half, two minutes. I don't even know I
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: blacked out, and uh I did, and I've whistled at
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: him and he looked at me. The whistle okay, that
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: literally just a little whistle and he looks at me
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: and I can't shoot him. I mean, I'm just sitting
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: there with my crossbow and I can't. I got two
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: saplings right in the boiler room and I'm about to
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: just throw up, like I'm just like I can't shoot
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: this deer. Like do I got shot him? Though? I
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: can't do that, you know, like that's stupid. And uh,
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: I had maybe a yard. I was just like, man,
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: if he takes one step, I think I can sneak
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: one in there. And I let him take one more
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: and I whistled and he took a second step instead
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: of just that was in the trees. Then yeah he
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: was so he knew where the sound was coming. Yeah
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: he knew. And right whenever he took that second step,
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: I had a little sapling again, so I just had
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: to go a hair to the left and just pulled
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: the trigger quick smoked him. He ran fifty sixty yards
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: straight west, stopped, looked around. All I could see was
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: the rack behind him, you know, and I'm seeing his
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: as old man, that's the biggest. He looked, and uh,
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: he stops about fifty sixty yards, looks around. I'm just
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: gonna go down, Go down, baby, And then he starts
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: doing the dance, flicking his tail and I said, oh yeah,
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: he's dropping and dropped fell back into the holler that
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: it came from, and I just went, let's go. Just
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: I put my heads up, shaking like crazy. Called my
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: girlfriend mckayley, like I said, I was on day seven eight,
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: So she's when you're gonna be home. You ain't gonna
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: kill big deer, you know. I'm like, baby, I gotta
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: be out there to kill something bigger than my one
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: thirty four you And I was just trying to beat that.
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: And when I sent her that picture, she was like,
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: oh my god. Well when I called her, I was like,
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: you don't even understand, Like I just smoked a one
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: sev in deer, and she's just fired up about it
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: because even though she doesn't really know, you know, like
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: I'm just saying, it's the biggest deer that I've ever seen,
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: you know, And uh yeah. Then I called my dad
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: right after and I said, Pops, you're gonna need to
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: get her crew out here. I said, I'm still on
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: the tree, and he said, now take your time, dust.
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: He's like, I know you shook up and you're worked
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: up about it, but just just wait to come down
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: till we get there, which I did, and I was
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: already already up. You were, Yeah, he knew that I was.
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, I wanted to be safe, yeah, exactly,
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: And so I waited for them. I didn't go see
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: the deer. I just took all my stuff up to
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: the field edge. Like I said, it's about some strong willpower.
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: I saw him go down, so I knew. But I
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: wanted my dad and everybody to be there when we
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: got up, because I knew this was gonna be. I
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: didn't think, you know, state record or anything like that,
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: but I just knew it was gonna be probably the
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: biggest deer that any of us have ever seen, or
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: going to the biggest typical USA. Yeah, And he was
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: just seventy yards from your tree standing you chose not
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: to go. Look, he was fifty sixty yards and I
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: watched him fall and he went down in the hall,
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: and I was just like, and I knew, like, but
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: I knew he was huge, but I didn't go look,
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: I waited until uh he's one of the boys of
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: Uh he's got three boys and hog farming. They all
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: come out, everything come out of his mouth. And so
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: is gonna develop software that just finds names, Yeah, finds
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: names in big Buck stories. And yeah, he'll he'll sit
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: back at home. Let I'll just do it. Ye. So yeah,
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: we got up on him and we're all just like
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: in shock. Really, you know, we're just looking around, like
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: high five and then just like, well, what's he going
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: to score? And I'm just thinking one eight, you know,
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: and I'm and I said one five was like that
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: was me pushing. I'm like, he's maybe five, and then
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: goes the prophet. Now he goes I'd say he's high
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: one sixties. I said, I think he's a little bigger
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: than that. Man. I said, give him some credit. But
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: you know, we're just we're not guys that we don't
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: put tape on deer. We don't if we're close to
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: fifteen inches, we shoot him. It's just like, you know,
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: that's just how it is. So with us trying to
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: figure out how big this deer was was like, you know, whatever.
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: So I got him out there in the woods and
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: took six of us to get him out. I was
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: gonna ask, what was your body like? Was he just
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: three hundred and is what we're He's probably two thirty
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: field dress, so three hundred on hoof is what we
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: were guessing. It was me and six other guys. Oh,
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: it's we didn't. We were just guessing just from deer
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: we've killed prior, you know, um, just guessing them off that.
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: But yeah, it was. I had my shirt off by
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: the time we got up to the field edge after
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: dragging him, because I was just out of shape and
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: dragon deer shows you how bad how to shape your arm.
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: So uh yeah, we got him in the truck and
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: uh took him back to the house. And at this
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: point I have started to send like snapchats, you know,
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: to my buddies, and I said, boys like I killed
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: A one eight and my buddy Blake and Byron Am
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: I allowed to said their name, They're not they're they're
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: just my friends, you know, they're just not friends. And
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: they come up there like I said, yeah, we're gonna,
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: we're gonna skin this deer out. You know. We do
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: all our processing and stuff in the basement the house
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: and uh By, Buddy Blake said, put the knife down,
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: do not touch that deer. He goes, I'm coming over.
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: I'll be there in fifteen minutes to keep it out. Yeah,
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: and we were gonna cut the backstraps out and everything,
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: you know. And uh so he comes there and he goes,
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: that is not that's a two deer. He goes, let
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: me put a tape on it. Like he's never really
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: he's not an official score. He knew enough to where
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: where to put it and how to you know, And
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: we got the does all my scoring for yeah, and
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: we got the number. And he goes, you're gonna need
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: to get this in a like a safe dude. I'm like, no, dude,
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: I'm just like no. Like he goes, You're gonna need
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: to get pictures, like professional pictures of this deer. And
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: I start laughing at him. I'm like, dude, I'm not
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: calling enough a photographer to get this picture of me
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: in this deer. Like I thought he was nuts. I
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: thought he was nuts. He's like, I'm telling you, dude.
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: So I called my photographer that I used for like
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: my music and stuff, and I was like, hey, you
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: want to come take a picture that this was the
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: next morning. I was like, hey, I killed this deer
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: yesterday evening, you want to come take some pictures. My
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: buddies say that this is gonna be a big deal,
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: and sure enough that's whenever. The next day was whenever,
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: Um you called, Spencer called me. Yeah, Luke texted me,
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: and I said, that's not my world. Yeah, but I
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: know who he ought to talk to. I guess I
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: can kind of go into that night too after because
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: Luke called me that once. I had said, like after
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: we fun, yeah, so like after we knew kind of
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: what we had. You know, me and my buddies and
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: my dad were just downstairs drinking beers like damn, this
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: is crazy, and we had put the words right out
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: of my mouth. We had rolling rock that night, little
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: bloody Mary there. I just keep the white pail, you know,
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: white ale and um. So we're all just down there
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: and I couldn't sleep at night after they all left,
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: like I was just I kept getting up and going
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: checking on him. You know. After my buddies are telling
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: me like, dude, this is a big deal, like you're
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: gonna need to get this in a safe and I'm
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: just like, shoot, I better like not go to sleep tonight,
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: like what if these pictures get out? And I didn't know.
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: And so about two o'clock at morning, I get that.
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: That night is whenever I tweeted out like it was
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: just a tweet, like I couldn't say. I was like,
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: I think I killed the biggest deer in Indiana, like
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: Indiana state record. And so I put no pictures, no nothing,
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: and uh, Ray, I was telling you about Ray Fulture
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: who he wrote like when it rains at poors and stuff.
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: I always torn with Luke and uh been buddies for
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: a while now. And he texts me, he goes, he goes,
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: oh huff. He calls me all he goes, oh huff.
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: Now let me see this deer that you tweeted about.
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: So I sent him two pictures. Right after I sent him.
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: I'm in bed and I get a call from Luke.
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: Luke Combs. I'm like, shoot, go out into the kitchen.
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: I'm like, what's up, Luke? How you doing? Man? It's
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: been a while, you know, And he goes, Bubbs. He
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: calls me Bubbs because I was always the youngest, you know,
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: kid on whenever we go on tour and stuff. I
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: was the opener, and I was always twenty one, twenty two,
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: you know, I was just the the young guy in
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: the group. And he goes, Bubbs, you don't even realize
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: what you did, did you. I said, oh, man, it's
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: it's huge. Man. This is gonna be a wall hanger. Man.
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: He goes, no, he goes, don't do anything. But yeah,
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: he goes, don't do anything. He goes, I'm gonna call
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: somebody for you. And I said, all right, cool man,
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: I appreciate it. And then he called me into marrow
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: or the next day, and then Spencer called me right after,
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: and then that's kind of how the story launched. I
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: guess crazy. Yeah, I don't. I don't want to like
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: be a douche bag, but I'm uniquely I'm uniquely suited
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: to hell somebody dustin in this situation. I knew. And
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: when I suggested guys walk through, I suggested Spencer because
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: Spencer one pays attention to this, and Spencer knows what
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: happens when people shoot big deer and like, what the
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: steps are. I used to work for North America. I
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: told Spencer. I told Spencer, did I warn you? I
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: think I warned you. I warned not to exploit him.
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: Did I Uh, yeah, I think he did see that.
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: Maybe maybe that was in just like big big big Buck,
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: Big big Bug, did Spencer, do You're right or do
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: you're wrong? Okay, uniquely suited to help someone like dust
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: in this situation. I used to work in North American
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: White Tail, who is like the proprietor of of big
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: Buck stories. They want to buy them for their cover
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: of their magazine. I've covered like world record deer in
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: the past. I've talked to bass pro, Cabela's, some of
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: the folks that have killed some of the biggest deer
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: in the world about how they went through the selling
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: process of their antlers to to profit off of these situations. Um.
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: And we've also covered like a lot of big box
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: on our website and other places, and like sort of
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: the fallout from that, whether it's like accusations of poaching
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: or just like the all the negative things they can
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: come from that. So the next day Dustin and I
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: probably spend like an hour on the phone talking about
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: like here's here's the next step, uh, to like set
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: you up to benefit and to get this thing legitimized. Yeah,
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: the fat and SKINNYO it is you shoot a big
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: old buck. Call Spencer, if you got a world record buck,
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: hit me up. I'd love to love to coached me
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: through it. He did too, Man, Uh, you sold the deer.
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: I did well? What was one of the Spencer spent
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: an hour with him in game, the whole thing. But
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: we're not gonna hear any of that. Like, give me
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: one main takeaway. What was like the one thing that
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: Spencer said in that hour where you're like, man, that
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: was really a hot tip for me. Well, it's just
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: I didn't know anything about the business side of deer hunt.
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: I just didn't even know there was deer shows or anything,
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: like you go take a deer to a deer show
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: or whatever. So like he was coaching me through like
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: the magazines and interviews and this is you know what
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: these go for? What a cover of a magazine? What
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: this is? So I didn't know anything about that stuff.
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: How long did it take for taxidermists started calling you? Oh? Shoot,
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: it was it was the next day once I posted it.
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: Ye did Uh did Spencer ballpark for you? What someone
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: might pay for that rack was? How close was he
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: he was right on it? Dead nuts? Yeah? Jeez, man,
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: I can't. Now I realized you you probably can't. You
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: have like a non disclosure. You can't tell us? Can
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: you tell us out? So when they when the guys
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: bought it from you, I don't know. I honestly don't
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: know the number. When the guys bought it from you.
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: You signed an n d A. I signed a bill
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: of sale. No, but that's not an n d A. Yeah,
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: but I we keep it. It's between me and him
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: as an undisclosed like number. It was. We agreed, Yeah,
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: we agreed to not talk about want I asked you
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: what you did with your money? It's in a very
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: safe location. Remember that there was one record holder. I
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: talked to, Luke Brewster, I think has still the non
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: typical world record white Tail. He had said he was
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: offered hundred thousand dollars and he turned it down. He
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: wouldn't tell me who it was. I asked it like,
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: could I have three guesses? And I got it on
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: the second guess who the offer was from? Um? But
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: once the word it got out that he wasn't going
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: to accept a hundred thousand dollars, nobody really bothered him anymore. Okay,
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: So all right, did I put an end of the
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: bidding war. Yeah, there was another sell that huge moose
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: for I want to say it was sixties, I remember
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: forty or sixty. There was another guy who killed I
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: think it was the Louisiana or the Mississippi State record,
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: non typical, who had said he couldn't tell me again
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: the details of what had exactly sold for, but he
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: said that he had an offer of thirty thirty thousand
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: dollars he was about to accept, but somebody came in
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: at the last minute and made a better offer that
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: included more money plus more replicas that he ended up taking.
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: So those Dustin can't tell us what the number would be,
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: but something because you can you haven't use your imagination.
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: Did you get a replica? How I can get I'm
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: gonna get the property owner one horses cost to get one.
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: I was gonna say we should get one for the studio.
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: But yeah, yeah, we kind of blew all our money
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: on this meat tester we had left that You're into
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: and Dustin's into. We definitely need to have a replica
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: of the Oh you know what we did buy that's
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: like this Actually, did you guys hear about this yet?
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: At auction? What don't you pay for it? Spencer at auction,
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: we bought an eight foot punt gun. Dollars Can you fire?
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: Make a lot of money off this punt gun? Can
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: we fire it? Oh? Yeah, that's the whole things about
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: when's that party happened? Eight eight foot long investment. He
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: calculated it out to be a two gauge. It's estimated
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: that throws about one pound throws a pound leg for reference,
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: that turkey load is like two ounces max. Eight foot
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: long punt gun. You pull a string to make it
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: go off. It just looks like a shotgun with a
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: never ending barrel on it. Twenty hy dollars at auction
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: and H and H we're gonna make the world's best
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: performing YouTube video of all time. You don't remember Gallaghy
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: how used to like another eighties reference from for your
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: Young Wimer Snappers or used to be a comedian. He
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: had two sticks. He liked a toy with the English language.
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: So he would be like, Um, there is t h
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: E I R, but there is th h e r E.
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: What gives That was like some of Gallagher's humor, and
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: then he'd do that line of humor about why things
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: are spelled the way they're spelled. And then he get
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: out a big sledgehammer and he would smash fruit. Watermelons
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: were big for him. That was like when you went
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: to see gallaghery, that's what you got, you smashing watermelons.
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: He'd smashed anything you think of. I bet you Mark
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: and uh Spencer have no idea who you're talking about.
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: The crowd Sometimes you would put on a piano's exciting.
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: People in the know would bring plastic sheeting at a
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: Gallagher concert. Okay. The reason I bring up Gallagher is
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: me and Spencer are gonna take the shooting all man
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: or stuff with our punt gun. I'm ready to see that.
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: I won the auction about ten days ago. We hope
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: it's going to be here in June. So Dust and
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: I gotta ask you, uh yeah, put a button on
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: talking about that does a does a world record, but
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: taste better than a run of the mill one thirty.
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: What happened all the meat? I've ate about four or
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: five packages of it of the backstrap? Can you send
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: us a chunk for a meat tester? Hey, I'm actually
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: gonna do some No, I'm actually gonna do some jerky.
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: How about jerky or do you guys wants a little chunk,
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: when your little chunk of meat hole muscle, and we'll
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: tell you what, We'll tenderness test it. And so then
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: when you're telling people the stats, let's do it'll be
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: like it scored this tenderness test of four point three
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: best tasted world class out there. I'm getting backed up
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: on questions right now. I'm just listening to figure out.
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: So you've eating four or five packages? Are you savoring it?
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: Are you valuing that meat as much as the guy
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: that bought the antlers from you is valuing those that bone? Well,
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: I mean, it's just whenever mckayley, my girlfriend wants to
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: if you're when you send Steve his little bitty chunk,
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: if you want to send me like I would very
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: pot luck in the world because it'd be a great
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: way to bring it. Well, you know that meatball you're eating,
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: how do you think about that? Well, the world record.
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: You might be interested in the fact that's a world record.
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: That would be pretty cool to uh, you know, share
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: that with some friends. I have a little party. We
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: had the world record book. We had friends giving UH
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: November thirty after I killed the deer and UH ended
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: up taking taking it over there and frying it up,
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: having a poker, having a poker, and I was like,
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: you boys bearter getting your snapchatsy that you class white
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: tail here. The one thing we talked about, Dustin was
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: that like, this is gonna happen regardless of what your
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: next steps are, that folks are gonna call you out.
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: Is like you poached it, this was a high fence
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: deer whatever, and imagine that happened either way. But I
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: was like, you should really get a game warden over
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: there to just like take a picture of you in
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: the buck together and the game warden standing there and
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: that'll like shut some of this down and see the
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: gut pile whatever. Yeah, So like and that's what I did.
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: I called d n R and I talked to the
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: lady and she was just like like the disc at
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: true or whatever. She was just like I said, I
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: killed the like possibly state record in Indiana, And she
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: was just like I had no idea what I was
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: talking about. I'm like, who do I need to talk to? Yeah,
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: and I'm just like who do I need to get
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: somebody here to check this deer out? So like, but anyways,
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: like nobody ever came. So then like three or four days,
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: five days later, I'm getting calls from D n R. Well,
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: I'm back in nash wondering like where I killed this deer?
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: Or like they were now they're following up, they're starting,
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: they're starting to get calls from people all over the place.
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: Really yeah, oh he posted it, he Bobby shot it
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: with a rifle, blah blah blah blah blah. And why
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: just people talking. It's unreal, man. It doesn't matter whether
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: the story because it's impossible. It's really impossible to to
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: to which to me it was impossible too, but it happened.
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: And it's just like you know what Pat Durkin says,
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: big bucks make people stupid. Yep, that's true. Oh he
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: doesn't say haters gonna hate haters. I would love to hear.
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: I think you're confusing Pat Durkin with a young lady
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: who sings pop music. Yeah, go on, So I'm I'm
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: down in Nashville, you know, writing songs that week, and
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: uh get a call, hey when can you be you know,
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: when you can you be back up here to show
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: us where you killed this deer? I said, Well, I'm
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: not going to be home for another to three days
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: or so. Um. So they went out there. I told him,
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: gave him the property owner's number, and I went out there,
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: found my gut pile, found my tree. They were texting me.
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: I had the DNR number, and he said, is it
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: was it? This tree? Two limbs cut off about twenty
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: ft up. I said, that's it. I said, gut pole
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: should be about you know, sixty yards in that haller.
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: And they found it. What was left of it, you know,
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: there was coyotes had got to it, but what was
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: left of the gut pile. And there was a week
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: or two that went by, you know, I thought everything
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: was squashed. Like okay, cool, they're still getting more phone calls. Well,
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: they wanted to come have another sit down. So I said, well,
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: come over to the house and sit down on couch.
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: I'm some coffee. I'll tell you about the whole hunt
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: if you want to. You know, hear about it. So
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: they so they're just getting calls some people who are
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: like it has to be yeah, that's what they were saying.
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: They're like, we just keep getting calls like man, and
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: we just want to I said, well, I said, here's
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: the antlers, like showed him the antlers, and I told
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: him everything. They want to see the arrow or anything
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: like that. They talk to the landowner. Yeah, talked to
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: the landowner. Uh yeah. And it was just like the
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: thing about it was is people think that I live
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: in Nashville, so it was a residency thing. But I
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: I'm an Indiana resident. I just travel for work, you know,
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: to write songs down and record songs. So like there
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: was this huge thing of like I said, well, you
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: can look at my bank statements. I said, I've been
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: living here. I said, I moved away at nineteen, but
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: I moved back and now I just traveled back and forth.
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: I said, but the past five six years I've been
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: you know here, you know. So yeah, it's but we
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: finally squashed it. We all took pictures together and so yeah,
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: so here's what I wonder about situations like yours and
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: other people have gone through this. You shoot this this
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: world class, dear. You never really this is never something
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: you were trying to do, right, You just want to
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: be a deer hunter. But now you you stumble into
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: this world class dear. Now you're dealing with d n R,
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: You're dealing with allegations approaching you're dealing with the business side.
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: All of a sudden, people are offering your money for
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: the deer. People are inviting you too shows, and now
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: you're traveling all over the country and you're talking to
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: a thousand people and everyone wants a piec of You're
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: glad it happened? Like, are you okay with this? Do
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: you like this? Or has it been? Like? I got
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: more in a bargain for I've prayed for a long time,
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: uh for music to you know, I just needed a break.
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: You know, I had three d dollars in my bank
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: account when I shot this thing. So it has completely
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: changed my life in a the best way ever. It's
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: crazy nice, that's awesome. Uh Uh remember how I told
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: you I was gonna ask you about Do you like
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: it's all downhill from here? Yeah? I mean I'm buck hunting.
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: So now have you redefined a shooter? Buck? I'm going
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: back to one thirty four if I can beat my
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: one thirty four and yeah, it's just like and if
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: I can maybe get lucky enough to work my weptope,
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: one forty one sixty's going back to November. Yeah, I'm
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: not even gonna that's just most the reset button. Yeah,
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: it's just the reset I'm and my things like it's awesome,
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: but it's like I have I get just the joy
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: out of shooting a dough, you know, or I just
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: love deer hunting. I love eating deer, so it's great man. Yep. Um,
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: your girlfriends stayed with you through this whole thing. Yep, yep,
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: she's yeah. Do you get you get approached by women
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: who just want to be closer, Like if you're like
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: in prison, women want to write your letters just because
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: you're in jail. No, no antler chasers. Thank god, you
- 1:47:59Speaker 1: kind of answered my whash, So I'm gonna ask you
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: anyways in case you want to add to it, because
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: you said you had three hundred bucks in your bank account,
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: which would mean that makes the decision to sell pretty easy.
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: But it's still but you know, the USA world record,
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: So was it easy? That was? It took me two
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: months after talking with Spencer and really trying to figure
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: out like what my best option was, you know, and
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: I'm getting I had two offers and me and him
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: were talking about bass Pro and like I was waiting
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: for them, but they never called. I had contacted them,
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: and I was just trying to figure out if there
- 1:48:34Speaker 1: was more people would be interested, but I only had two. Well,
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: then the one guy he made a real good offer
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: and was like come see me. And uh I was
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: over there for like eight or nine hours, just bullshit
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: and and you know, just picking guitar. We were just
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: you know, and then he's a guitar player. He had
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: like three or four guitars only not only monster white tails.
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: I mean he had guitars, guns, everything over there. I
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: mean it was awesome, Ted new it. Ted. What I
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: like about you calling him moose? Right afterwards was when
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: the hole in the hornbuck was killed, like back in
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: Y was killed by a train and some railroad workers
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: had found the deer who had no like familiarity with
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: hunting or really wild life in general, and they actually
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: argued about whether it was a moose or a white
- 1:49:26Speaker 1: tail at the time. That's that's crazy. Wow, Yeah, like
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: that was my first thought whenever I first saw him.
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: He put his head up. I just go, moose, Holy shit, moose,
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: this is a moose? Like what is a moose doing?
- 1:49:39Speaker 1: Indicator County, Indiana? You know, I just like what this
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: is a hog farm? You know what? Hell man? So yeah,
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: are you ready to play song for us. Yeah, I
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: might have to tune it back up, though it's probably
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: got out of tune. So Hayden's you don't travel with
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: the guitar, Paul, you do? I't have a guitar over
- 1:49:59Speaker 1: one shoulder, that dear rack. Why, here's why. Luke gave
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: me that guitar, which the one I got Taylor. He
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: gave it was his first show guitar and I've had
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: it for about five six years now. You don't like
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: travel with it? I don't know. It's I'm putting it
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: up in it's going in a glass case on the wall.
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: I don't want I would like to get a copy
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: of the replica that dear head, dear handler. Should they
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: make those ones just on a school cap, like a
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: fake school cap. It's just skull captain then, so that's
- 1:50:30Speaker 1: just what the antler's cost. And then whatever the taxidermy
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: and stuff is. If folks, did you keep the real
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: cape or you lost the real got the real cape
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: that was in the deal. I said, I want to
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: have the real cape, so I got to keep it.
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: Who are you gonna have stuff the deer I had?
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: It's already done, Yeah, Charlie Watson, North Vernon, Indiana. You
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: should have had John Hayes doing well. This guy was
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: thirty minutes down the road. This guy's thirty hours exactly exactly.
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: If folks want to see the buck, I imagine you're
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: gonna be traveling with this thing. It's some trade was
- 1:51:00Speaker 1: coming up this year. Do you know, like what stops
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: you gonna be making? Yeah, so, uh, we're in I'm
- 1:51:05Speaker 1: actually doing Smoky Mountain Knife Works. Gotta show there on
- 1:51:09Speaker 1: July nine from eleven four, playing for like forty five minutes,
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: then just showing the deer off, bringing your two passions together.
- 1:51:16Speaker 1: That's what we're doing. That's when I was talking like
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: deer hunting into a deer business. It's just crazy that
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: goes hand in hand country music and deer hunting. So
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: that's what we're gonna start doing, is you know, bring guitar,
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: play forty five minutes to show the deer off and
- 1:51:29Speaker 1: tell the story. July nine, Um August, we're in uh
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: where's that at Kansas City? And then I'm in Bloomington,
- 1:51:39Speaker 1: Illinois on the August, and then we're working on September, October,
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: November shows and then you get back in tree stand Oh,
- 1:51:47Speaker 1: that's what I told him. I said, I said, I
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: got at least have some time for Buck, because you
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: know that's right from And I only killed two deer
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: last year us like kill three or four years. So
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: I'm running along on me. You know, I'm saving that,
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: I'm saving moves, so I don't always have a little bit, man,
- 1:52:10Speaker 1: I'd always have a little bit. The next day, Um,
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: before you and I talked, Luke Combs was making the
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: introduction and one of the things he said was that
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: he's like, this is gonna change his life and it
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: couldn't have happened to a better dude. And he was
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: right like that. That was so damn cool to hear
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: that story. How you're not me or Mark Kenyon killing
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: that buck? Yeah, man, I just it's crazy. And he
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: knew that it was gonna help me, Like that's why
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: he called, you know, texted you, and you know we've
- 1:52:33Speaker 1: been friends for a long time, and um, just I've
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: been praying for something in music to what in the hey,
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: you know, like, and sure enough a deer walks through
- 1:52:42Speaker 1: and I shoot it at forty yards and now I
- 1:52:44Speaker 1: can do the deer and the music, you know, hand
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: in hand. It's just it's it's it's god man, it's
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: just how it is. Amen to that. Play us a
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: song you love? So can I tune it first? H
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: Are we doing one song? One song? Yeah? Stay for
- 1:53:06Speaker 1: our trip show. Yeah, I'll just play that fishing song.
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: That's fine, that's great. Just it goes good with the
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: meat eater. You know. I should be fishing somewhere on
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: a boat, floating sun tine, cold cane, chilling, thrilling in
- 1:53:32Speaker 1: a five pounds large mouth, good time, grinning. Yeah, I
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: should be fishing. Hell. I should be in a deer stain,
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: sipping coffee from a cup, watching the woods wick up,
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: spitting red and maine, waiting on a big buck slip
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: up thirty thirty in my hands. I should be in
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: a dear stand huh, in my way from a severy
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: day right race. Hate this backed up traffic far from
- 1:54:06Speaker 1: the skyline, night lights, concrete high rise makes it hard
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: to find the stars, catch the sunset. WHI shh is
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: down a back row, back home, sitting on the best
- 1:54:16Speaker 1: damn honey hoole. I know, shouldn't be caught up in
- 1:54:20Speaker 1: this fast life city living man. I should be fishing. Yeah,
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: I should be way out without a warrior care in
- 1:54:36Speaker 1: the world, instead of staying still stuck heads with some
- 1:54:41Speaker 1: dude in a suit honking in my rear view. I
- 1:54:44Speaker 1: could use a camel line beer. Gotta get out of here,
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: A hundred my way from a severy day red race.
- 1:54:54Speaker 1: Hate this backed up traffic far from the skyline night lights,
- 1:54:58Speaker 1: concrete higher rise makes it hard to find him. Stars,
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: catch your sun, said with shots down a back rode,
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: back home, sitting on the best damn honeyhole. I know.
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: Shouldn't be caught up in this fast live city living man,
- 1:55:15Speaker 1: I should be fishing. Man, I should be fishing. I
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: should be taking it slow, taking it in with a
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: west wind blowing just right, A hunting my way from
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: a seven day rat race. Hate this backed up traffic
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: far from these skyline night lights, concrete high rise makes
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: it hard to find them. Stars, catch your sun, said
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: with shots down a back rope, back home, sitting on
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: the best damn honey hoole. I know. Shouldn't be caught
- 1:55:57Speaker 1: up in this fast live city man, I should be fishing, Man,
- 1:56:08Speaker 1: I should be fishing. Song of Regret. I wrote that
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: song about living in Nashville, Tennessee. Then you moved back,
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: and I moved back, and then I wrote a song
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: about it. Have you gone fishing more? Yes? Good? Oh yeah,
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: We're gonna prioritize fishing a lot more these days. All right, man,
- 1:56:34Speaker 1: thanks for coming on cool. I appreciate you all having
