- 0:00Hello, hello, welcome back everybody.
- 0:01Welcome back to the Cat Scan Guru podcast.
- 0:04Hope you guys are having an amazing week.
- 0:06Yes, we are in full swing of 2026 and I am fucking excited
- 0:13about all the good things that I have planned and the goals that
- 0:18I have just set up for myself because I don't do the whole New
- 0:24Year's resolution stuff because that's just not attainable for
- 0:28me. So and I've tried that in the
- 0:30past, but you know what it's just I would never accomplish
- 0:32the goal. So have lots of good goals for
- 0:35me personally and as far as you know, my brands.
- 0:40So because I have two different brands and just some other
- 0:43business ventures that I'm working on.
- 0:45So if you haven't caught the last episode, I talked about the
- 0:49CT Protocol book that I went ahead and created and freaking
- 0:54fantastic. So this is the first version of
- 0:56it. Of course, this will get updated
- 0:58as more things come out. So make sure you check out the
- 1:01link in the show notes. It's available not only as a
- 1:05hard copy but also as APDF. So make sure you check that out.
- 1:09I'm super excited as one of the greatest accomplishments I have
- 1:12so far for 2026, and I hope it helps a lot of you technologists
- 1:16out there because it's a really good resource.
- 1:19It's very general so it doesn't stick to like 1 protocol versus
- 1:23the other. It's very general so it could be
- 1:26just used anywhere. So make sure you go check that
- 1:29out. Also subscribe to the YouTube
- 1:31channel. Got lots of good educational
- 1:34content that's coming out. Subscribe to this podcast.
- 1:37Make sure you share with ACT technologist that needs to hear
- 1:39all this because they need to come and get educated.
- 1:42So bring yourself to the podcast show and also make sure you
- 1:47follow on TikTok and on Instagram.
- 1:50So everything will be available in the show notes as far as
- 1:53that. So let's get into today's
- 1:55episode where I'm going to be talking about learning CT
- 1:58without the overwhelm or burnout.
- 2:00Now, as a technologist, with the amount of years I've been in
- 2:05this, this is year #23 you can experience a lot of overwhelm
- 2:10and burnout, whether you're a new technologist, whether you're
- 2:13a seasoned technologist. I know I feel the burnout now.
- 2:16So, and it's very overwhelming, especially when you have made
- 2:21this a career and you've invested time, years, energy,
- 2:25things like that, and just paid your dues to this profession.
- 2:28OK, so I'm going to be talking about, you know, the learning
- 2:33patterns, the core exams that I feel you should know like in the
- 2:37beginning when you're starting out and how to build your
- 2:40confidence. OK, so we're going to kind of
- 2:42dive into these topics. All right, so learning patterns
- 2:45when it comes to CT, I've seen different kinds of learning
- 2:50patterns. So what I'm talking about
- 2:52learning patterns is when technologists come and they're
- 2:57transitioning from X-ray or they're a student from a CT
- 2:59program or even a traveler, you can kind of sense, you know, how
- 3:04they perform, whether they learn something very, very quickly or
- 3:08they need more time. And I've experienced both of
- 3:11these learning patterns because some people do catch on very
- 3:14quickly and some people need a little bit more time because it
- 3:18can be very overwhelming. And then I've seen learning
- 3:20patterns where people just do not care.
- 3:22And I'm pretty sure you've seen that as well.
- 3:24And they just become what you call either a textbook tech or a
- 3:29button pusher. OK, now as far as textbook, and
- 3:32that is nothing to be negative, but we're going to call it out
- 3:35as we see it because that's what it really is.
- 3:38We are a profession and you have to be the best tech that you can
- 3:43and we want you to make sure that you are safely getting that
- 3:47exam done on the patient, not just because we have 30 Ers that
- 3:51need to be done and it's a conveyor belt.
- 3:54And I know it can kind of feel that way, OK.
- 3:56So The thing is, is that we have to educate them the right way
- 4:01every single time, OK? So people who catch on very
- 4:04fast, it's very good, but they also need to make sure that they
- 4:07have good structure and that they perform the exam safely and
- 4:12not rush through the exam because they want to pick up
- 4:14speed, OK, Like you have to make sure you do it correctly and
- 4:19safely, OK, Next thing is, is that some some other people do
- 4:23need more time. Sometimes understanding the why
- 4:27behind things sometimes is why didn't my exam in the contrast
- 4:33enhanced like I wanted it to or why did this happen?
- 4:36Or you know, the different types of factors of you know, what's
- 4:40going on. OK, this anatomy is out of the
- 4:42field of view. How can we adjust and how can we
- 4:46fit everything in there? And sometimes that does need to
- 4:48be rescanned because, you know, we do have bariatric patients
- 4:53and sometimes the anatomy that they're looking at can fall out
- 4:56of the field of view. So how do we correct that,
- 4:59Right? So sometimes they need a little
- 5:01bit more guidance to really learn the core things that need
- 5:04to be learned in CT. And it can be very overwhelming
- 5:07and it can burn you out really fast.
- 5:10So sometimes people's learning curves are different.
- 5:12Now as far as the textbook text button pushers, OK, now, yes,
- 5:18you need the textbook material to learn everything on the
- 5:21registry to pass the registry to do this.
- 5:24I can tell you when it comes to actually physically interacting
- 5:27with the patient, physically doing the exam, physically
- 5:30executing protocols and physically, you know, making
- 5:33sure that your patient centering is correct.
- 5:35A textbook ain't going to help you there.
- 5:37OK, it's not going to help you there.
- 5:38It will help you for the registry and help you do that
- 5:41and become a registered tech. However, you need to know what
- 5:44you're doing when you're inside that room with the scanner, with
- 5:48the patient, and behind that console when you're executing
- 5:51that exam. Those are the things that you
- 5:53need to know because you need to know what you're doing out there
- 5:55on the floor, not what a textbook tells you, OK?
- 5:58And it's very frustrating because we do have seasoned
- 6:03people who teach the newer people.
- 6:05Well, you just push this button, that button, this button, that
- 6:07button. Well, whatever you learn in your
- 6:09textbook, no, that's bullshit. You learn more when you're
- 6:14physically active in that setting and you are doing it not
- 6:19watching somebody. When you're actually physically
- 6:21setting up the patient, physically doing the exam,
- 6:24physically administering contrast.
- 6:26That is how you learn the proper way.
- 6:29So we have to be mindful of different learning patterns with
- 6:33people as far as if they catch on quickly or if they need more
- 6:36time and we can adjust accordingly.
- 6:39OK, now the core exams that you need to know when you are first
- 6:43starting out, these are my recommendations.
- 6:46Whatever you guys do in your facilities, make sure you guys
- 6:49continue to do that. So these this is my own personal
- 6:53perspective and what I recommend.
- 6:55So all your head CTS to make sure you know how to center them
- 6:58properly, execute them properly, you know, angle if your pantry
- 7:02does that. I know a lot of newer scanners
- 7:04don't do that because I have at my facility we have two new 256
- 7:10GE machines and those do not tilt.
- 7:13Those gantries do not tilt that you do after the fact.
- 7:16We do what we call a virtual gantry tilt.
- 7:19So because those big bores do not on those big gantries do not
- 7:23tilt anymore, OK, They're stationary.
- 7:25So head CTS are very important. OK, your stroke protocol because
- 7:30especially with just the amount, whether you are like a stroke
- 7:34ready facility, you're a comprehensive stroke center, a
- 7:38primary stroke center, wherever the case is, make sure you know
- 7:42and know how to execute your stroke protocol, your perfusion,
- 7:46your CTA head. And next make sure you get that
- 7:49as a core exam tip top. OK, your abdomen and pelvis's,
- 7:54those are a scan that are ordered routinely every single
- 7:57day. Yes, I know they're fucking
- 7:59boring. However, that is a routine exam
- 8:01that gets ordered every single time you see a head without
- 8:05abdomen, pelvis with usually it's on older patients that we
- 8:08see that combo sometimes because we're trying to rule out some
- 8:12kind of urinary tract infection that the patients altered and
- 8:15things like that and can make them very, you know, altered and
- 8:18confused. OK, But you get it for a lot of
- 8:21other diagnosis as well on different populations of people.
- 8:24So make sure that you understand how to know your timing on
- 8:29contrast when it comes to abdomen and pelvises and things
- 8:32like that, and also CTA work. The next core exam that I feel
- 8:35is very, very important is your PE study.
- 8:37PE studies are very, very important and they order those
- 8:40like if you need a cup of water every single hour, OK, I know
- 8:45that was a bad analogy, but PE studies, you have to know how to
- 8:50execute them properly. Contrast timing, knowing what
- 8:53that is, making sure that you're setting up your ROI in the
- 8:56correct place, making sure that your IV is checked properly and
- 9:00make sure it's good for contrast injection.
- 9:03Making sure you know as far as how much contrast depending on,
- 9:07you know, patient habitus, you know, cardiac output, which
- 9:11cardiac output. We really don't have much that
- 9:14we can do about that. But if it looks like a really
- 9:17crappy PE study, you know exactly how you can adjust it
- 9:20next time. OK, so I feel that those are
- 9:24some core exams that you need repetition practice because
- 9:28repetition and practice builds your confidence, which is my
- 9:31last point in this episode. So when you have repetition, you
- 9:37practice those exams over and over and over and over again.
- 9:40And I know it's going to be repetitive, it's going to be
- 9:42boring. You're going to be like, my
- 9:44gosh, I'm bored out of my fucking mind.
- 9:46However, when you build that rapport where it's repetitive,
- 9:50where you practice a lot and you gain more experience, you're
- 9:54going to build more confidence in executing those exams.
- 9:57You're going to build more confidence when you center that
- 9:59patient correctly. Now I talk about patient
- 10:01centering in every podcast episode and I'll tell you why
- 10:04patient centering is very, very important when you do those
- 10:07scouts because it's going to tell that CT system the correct
- 10:11amount of radiation dose to give that patient.
- 10:14So when you center the patient correctly, it's going to
- 10:17calculate the correct dose so that we keep that dose as low as
- 10:21we can, OK? So that is very, very important.
- 10:25And that is one of the things in every core exam that you have to
- 10:29make sure you do properly, not the second time you do it right
- 10:33the first time. Patient centering is very, very
- 10:36important. So laser light, please use them,
- 10:39OK? That is what you need to do, OK.
- 10:42So like I said, repetition practice, those are going to
- 10:46make you a very confident tech. It is going to build your
- 10:49confidence in making sure they you can execute that like, OK,
- 10:54this is no problem because once you repeat it so many times,
- 10:58once you practice, once you get the flow of it, it's going to
- 11:02come naturally to you. OK.
- 11:04And sometimes people with different learning patterns,
- 11:07yeah, that might take time, but eventually they start to get
- 11:10into the rhythm, get into a flow, and everything comes
- 11:13naturally. So my course that I've
- 11:16constructed it is a course with three or four, three or four
- 11:20different courses looped into it gives you this structure in CT
- 11:24that CT schools do not give you. And I am not knocking any CT
- 11:30programs or anything like that. However, I've seen curriculums
- 11:34in it could be structured a little bit different.
- 11:36So that's why I have created an entire just CT course where it
- 11:43is 3 different courses in one huge course and it gives you the
- 11:47structure that CT programs didn't.
- 11:50So make sure you check that out in the show notes because it's
- 11:53LinkedIn there. Okay, so that is it for today's
- 11:55episode. So hopefully this was insightful
- 11:58and gives you some clarity on on how to just learn CT without the
- 12:03overwhelm, without the burnout, so you can be a successful tech.
- 12:07So thank you so much for joining me in this episode.
- 12:09Make sure you subscribe to the show, subscribe to the YouTube
- 12:12channel, follow me on TikTok. So I appreciate everybody
- 12:15listening and thank you for joining me on this episode.
- 12:18And I will chat with you guys in the next episode.
