- 0:07We hope you enjoy the show. Hello and welcome to the long
- 0:17and short of it. The podcast where we discuss
- 0:20each of the games on the Metacritic top 100 list.
- 0:24My name is Dan and I'm joined by my name is Lawrence.
- 0:26Welcome to the podcast, welcome one, and all How are you?
- 0:30Yeah, more. I not bad.
- 0:33So, what day are we on more on a Tuesday?
- 0:35Remember, last time we recorded on a Tuesday.
- 0:37So today I've got a bit of a different episode.
- 0:40You may remember listener a few weeks ago that we said we would
- 0:45be well we've mentioned this episode so many times.
- 0:47Now we said we were going to do a special episode which was one
- 0:51where we categorize each of the games from the top 100 list and
- 0:58we select a winner. From each category based on
- 1:02genres. So I've put together the games
- 1:07into sort of loose genres. Some of them are a bit trickier
- 1:11than others because they kind of don't fit neatly into one genre.
- 1:15So you may disagree with some of the genres or feel that Game
- 1:20Belongs elsewhere, which is fair enough.
- 1:23I also must admit that I placed a couple of games that were a
- 1:27bit in between in certain genres.
- 1:30To spice it up a bit and create more interesting.
- 1:32Brackets for us. So how are you feeling leading
- 1:36into this special episode? To be honest with you, like I
- 1:39think you mentioned a steering this, about two weeks ago and
- 1:44I've not thought about it at all.
- 1:46So I'm going in pretty blind. You've not shared with me any
- 1:49lists or anything? No, so I I've got yeah, I've got
- 1:55no idea what to expect. Got to remember all the games
- 1:59and all Off the top of my head, of course.
- 2:01Yeah, yeah. Absolutely.
- 2:02Right. That's fair.
- 2:04And obviously, the winner of each category will be Tetris.
- 2:09So I will first read out the genres that I've gone for.
- 2:12I thought in my head First of all that this would be like six
- 2:17or seven which seven genres, but it just doesn't work like that.
- 2:21And here are the genres. I have just before you jump into
- 2:25that, I feel that I should also preface this.
- 2:27By saying, we haven't run out of ideas for the podcast because
- 2:32obviously we had our ranking episode a few weeks ago, the
- 2:35reason that we put this episode here is because as we've noted
- 2:40previously, towards the end of the top 100 list, we came up
- 2:43against quite a lot of long game.
- 2:44Eames because we didn't forward plan well enough.
- 2:46So at the moment we're playing, I think we've got about four
- 2:51back-to-back big games. So in order to give you an
- 2:54episode, we thought we'd bring this one forward while we play
- 2:56some of the bigger games in the background.
- 2:57So it's not that we've run out of ideas.
- 2:59We've got loader loader, loader games, left to do.
- 3:02It's just for continuity sake. We have, we have mentioned this
- 3:07episode quite a few times. Yeah, well, so we're now
- 3:10delivering on that promise. But yes, Onward, Christian
- 3:13Soldiers. So the genres that we've gone
- 3:16for our first or not first because I'm probably going to do
- 3:20them in a bit of a, random order, seven action adventure is
- 3:26there. Then we've got Adventure pure
- 3:29Adventure, then we've got action.
- 3:32Excellent original. Then we've got platform, then
- 3:37we've got first person shooter, we have third-person shooter, we
- 3:43have fighting game. Stealth Game survival horror.
- 3:51Western role-playing game. Japanese role-playing game.
- 3:56Now I could have split the role playing games, a bunch of ways I
- 3:59could have done action, RPGs strategy RPGs but Yeah, that
- 4:05that one felt the most, right because you do get a bit of a
- 4:07gulf between jrpgs western western RPGs.
- 4:12And you can usually tell the difference between them and
- 4:16there are some RPGs that are RPGs, but they don't sit nicely
- 4:19in either category. So yeah, I thought like, for
- 4:23example Baldur's Gate which is a crpg, not astronaut, Ash and
- 4:27this RPG, or and a RPG. So next we've got Puzzle.
- 4:35Strategy, racing Sports Extreme Sports and sandbox.
- 4:43No, I think you'll agree. That's quite a quite a few more
- 4:47genres than maybe we thought beforehand.
- 4:49Yes. More than the average bear.
- 4:52We're gonna kick off with I'm going to kick off with.
- 5:00An easy one with only two games in there so I'm going to kick
- 5:04off with our survival horror genre.
- 5:08It's you know it's who games are going to be in there.
- 5:10Will it be Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil Code Veronica?
- 5:14Correct. Yeah so there are there are
- 5:16games within the time. I've got a big brain.
- 5:19Yes. So all right.
- 5:23So which is the winner of the survival horror genre Resident,
- 5:26Evil 4 because Resident Evil Code for on occurs.
- 5:28One of the worst games ever played.
- 5:29I never want to play it. Her again, ever is my vote.
- 5:33What about your runner-up? The runner-up I would say we'll
- 5:38put Resident Evil 4 in first place.
- 5:40And we'll also put Resident Evil 4 in the runner-up position
- 5:44because I don't think code Veronica deserves to be deserves
- 5:48to be acknowledged personally. And that is where I stand.
- 5:52Where do you stand? I imagine quite.
- 5:54Similarly Resident. Evil 4 is the winner hands down.
- 5:59There's to me there's not really.
- 6:00Competition here. Now, there is something to throw
- 6:02a bit of a spanner in the works though.
- 6:03Hmm, what if we were to include again that we did last
- 6:07Halloween, Silent Hill 2. I'd say Resident Evil 4 would
- 6:13still when I like Silent Hill 2 and I like the vibe of it, but I
- 6:17remember. So I don't mean to be fair, the
- 6:20controls and merciful for on, on ideal.
- 6:24Yeah. Like Resident Evil 2.
- 6:27I think I'll be interested to play the Remake that they're
- 6:30doing. Ying.
- 6:31Yeah. But yes, I would say that if you
- 6:33put Silent Hill 2 in there, it would still be the case that
- 6:36Resident Evil 4 would win. Even though, I was very near
- 6:39about resi for, I'd say that one word, when the category, You did
- 6:44make it all the way through Rosie for, though, which was
- 6:47good. I did, I tried my hardest I
- 6:51would say if Silent Hill 2 was there.
- 6:53I agree. It would take the runners-up
- 6:55position, the runner-up position.
- 6:58So, okay, on to the next one, nice quick.
- 7:01One there. Next, we're going to go for my
- 7:08award for the most boring genre. The sports genre.
- 7:14So within the sports genre we have five games, we have NCAA
- 7:19football, 2004 Madden NFL, 2004 Madden NFL, 2002, Madden NFL,
- 7:262003 and NFL, 2K 1. So, All-American, football,
- 7:32yeah, and preface it with you and me, didn't play all of them
- 7:38like you played some, and I played some great and And I know
- 7:42that you said NCAA was pretty pretty good, but I'd probably
- 7:47say that. I really like it's got you AAA
- 7:50was Madden with college football.
- 7:52Yes, that was it. I'd say Madden NFL 04, just
- 7:57because it was the most modern 12.
- 7:58Therefore was the, the tightest, the most up-to-date rosters for
- 8:02that time and brought the most of the table.
- 8:05I guess. I don't know what you'd say
- 8:07because obviously, you paid a couple of different ones like
- 8:10doing you like to cake. One a day.
- 8:13So I prefer I think NFL 2K one would win it for me with Madden
- 8:18NFL 2004 as the runner-up to K1 just felt quite refreshing
- 8:24arkady and sweet, whereas, the Madden games and all the other
- 8:31games on their 2002, 2003, 2004 NCAA felt the same game to me,
- 8:36just with slightly different rosters.
- 8:39So I'm picking the outlier, the game that did something.
- 8:43Bit different I suppose. Yeah, fairly.
- 8:45Yeah. That's quite an easy one.
- 8:47Okay. Next, where shall we go?
- 8:54I've have any choices for where to go next?
- 8:58Say Western RPGs I'm interested to see what's in there.
- 9:02I'm okay. I'm thinking that the Star Wars
- 9:06game will be in there. I can't think what other ones
- 9:10will be in there. Maybe Witcher 3 So this list
- 9:15comprises Mass Effect 2. Yeah, called the Scrolls 5
- 9:20Skyrim the Elder Scrolls for Oblivion The Witcher 3 wild Hunt
- 9:25complete edition. Diablo Star Wars Knights of the
- 9:29Old Republic Divinity, original sin to Definitive Edition
- 9:34borders, Gates who Shadows of arm and undertale.
- 9:40That is how just make it more difficult for you.
- 9:43Yeah I had it down to either Jedi Knights of the Old Republic
- 9:50Skyrim and then he said undertale and undertale makes it
- 9:53complicated because I really liked undertale.
- 9:59I really like undertale and I'd put that I'd love to say that
- 10:03would be first. But for me, I'd say it's Skyrim
- 10:05just off the amount that I played Skyrim the the fact that
- 10:10I don't really tend to get bored with Skyrim and it's just a game
- 10:14that's been so prevalent in, you know, my, my twenties and I do
- 10:21have a lot of time for Skyrim, but that is a very hard choice
- 10:25between that and undertale, but yes.
- 10:27Skyrim winds up for me. What about you?
- 10:28So I think you Lance is going to completely different.
- 10:31Yeah, I think it's worth saying here as well.
- 10:33That With these answers, probably are not being as
- 10:39critical as we were in the actual episodes.
- 10:42And also in the, in the grading episode, what I mean by that is
- 10:46where, as we were trying to place ourselves in the position
- 10:50of various positions when we were grading the games, and when
- 10:54we were talking with, we're trying to consider the public
- 10:57and yet there's, this is really just a favorites list.
- 10:59Yeah, our opinions. Yeah.
- 11:02So for me, It's down to two. I think you're going to say
- 11:07Witcher 3. Yeah, that is 1 and Mass Effect
- 11:102. Yeah, that's right.
- 11:13Yes, it's down to those two. You wouldn't think I'd known you
- 11:15for 12 years, would you? I think I'm gonna go for Witcher
- 11:223. Yeah, I love Mass Effect 2.
- 11:25I do I really really, really love it and it's a good runner
- 11:28up for me. But I just love the world of The
- 11:32Witcher, so yeah. That one wins it for me.
- 11:34That one's got my heart. Okay, I'm going to pick the next
- 11:38one. I'm trying to save some of the
- 11:41bigger ones for love for later. Yeah, sure.
- 11:43There are some big ones. We're gonna go for third person
- 11:49shooter. Okay.
- 11:51I can't think of games in that genre unless the Klan came to
- 11:55may be in them but I imagine you'll put them maybe an action
- 11:57or something. So this genre, there are some
- 12:01games that do fit it. Well, one game that does fit in
- 12:03there quite naturally. But the other three games that I
- 12:06put in there, they could easily fit in action adventure, but
- 12:10that genre is already quite bloated.
- 12:13And these are the three games are also third person shooters,
- 12:17so I thought I put them here. So the options are The Last of
- 12:22Us Uncharted 2 among Thieves Gears of War or The Last of Us
- 12:27Part 2. Could be interesting as one.
- 12:30Yeah. I mean, I thought Uncharted 2
- 12:32was okay. I didn't really think much of
- 12:33Gears of War. So it comes down to the last of
- 12:35us and alaskans part 2. And if anyone has been listening
- 12:40for, you know, as long back as we've been recording really
- 12:43because the last of us was one of the earlier games that we did
- 12:46and then we did last was part to probably about a week or so
- 12:50after it came out and in our last of this part 1 episode, I
- 12:55mentioned that I didn't really understand the requirement for a
- 12:58last of his part too. And I haven't really processed
- 13:02the last of his part 2 when we discussed that games operations
- 13:05here. Yeah, yeah, still trying to
- 13:08figure out how I feel about it because we recorded that the day
- 13:11after I had completed it. Yeah.
- 13:14And, you know, I went back to watch some of the clips from the
- 13:18endgame about, for maybe seven or eight months ago and spoilers
- 13:26but the last one of the last Scenes, where where Elly is
- 13:30remembering Joel and the last conversation that they had still
- 13:34makes me choke up a little bit where Joe's saying, you know if
- 13:39God gave me the opportunity to do everything the same, I would
- 13:42do it all exactly the same again and whenever I watch that I'm
- 13:45just like, like it's it hurts watching those clips.
- 13:51And to be honest playing the last of his part two is and I
- 13:55think I said it at the time and I've said it since is one of the
- 13:58Most emotionally harrowing experiences I've ever been
- 14:01through which, you know, shows my privilege.
- 14:05Because if I'm talking about one of the most emotionally
- 14:07harrowing experiences in my life, is playing a video game
- 14:09then, you know, lucky me. But there's this the video
- 14:12games. Yeah, it is without Liam Neeson.
- 14:16Sadly. But I would say, probably the
- 14:21last of us, I really, really, really enjoyed the last of his
- 14:25part to, but I haven't been back to play.
- 14:28That game since because I just know that it's going to take it
- 14:31out of me, whereas the last was part one, I've completed it
- 14:34probably about four or five times and it is a very good
- 14:38game. The very much lived up to
- 14:40expectations and took me a surprise at the time because I
- 14:43think I mentioned in the episode that one of our friends at Uni
- 14:46told me about it in 2013, the guy called Marcus and I hadn't
- 14:50heard anything about it and then I played it on.
- 14:52So okay this game is fantastic. So for me it would be the last
- 14:55was part one. What you think?
- 14:58I'm going to go for this one Uncharted to know.
- 15:01Okay, I don't think you can say, Gears of War.
- 15:04I like Gears of War a lot, but it's not quite on the level of
- 15:09the other three game. Well, maybe to Last of Us.
- 15:14I don't, I still, although it did grow on me.
- 15:19I prefer to me, it's between Uncharted 2 in the last was part
- 15:212. So Uncharted, 2 gets the runner
- 15:23up. If it was 10 years ago, I might
- 15:27have said on child. Yeah.
- 15:30But the fact is later Uncharted games.
- 15:35Do it better not, it better. Yeah, so as much as I love
- 15:39Uncharted 2 and I've played that game a lot of times last of his
- 15:46part 2 was a surprise and I think you're right, you said
- 15:52about it being harrowing. Sometimes a game.
- 15:56I know we've had this conversation about what's the
- 15:59point of games and sometimes a game is not about having fun, it
- 16:04wasn't a fun game. No, but It did something and I
- 16:10still remember that game. Very, very clearly.
- 16:14Sometimes you just forget pretty quickly after playing them, but
- 16:18that period playing, that game is very Vivid for me and I see
- 16:24you mentioned the end conversation and immediately
- 16:28recall that conversation and remember the episode we did in
- 16:31this game may be a bit silly at times, but I'm quite happy with
- 16:38the way that We discussed this game and the way that we delved
- 16:42into some of the themes behind this game.
- 16:44Yeah. I feel like some of the stuff we
- 16:46said, wasn't some of the stuff that was going round in all the
- 16:51videos that were going around at the time.
- 16:52I think we managed to say some fresh things about this game.
- 16:56Yeah. See ya.
- 16:57Whatwhat am. I one of my favorite videos on
- 17:01last year's part? 2 is still the review that was
- 17:04done by the YouTube channel, girlfriend reviews?
- 17:07Yeah. She touches on quite a few
- 17:10things about having lost her dad in quite like a dramatic way and
- 17:14age, where it really affected her and the comparisons are she
- 17:17poured with this game and you know, wanting answers and I
- 17:20think that video really sums up how I feel about this game and
- 17:24I've not been through anything like that.
- 17:25Luckily knock on wood but you know that that game you know
- 17:32even though I've chosen the losses part one, that game
- 17:34still, I think about that game a lot and I've said to you a few
- 17:38times I will go back and play that game.
- 17:40I just don't know when I've got it in me to do so, you know, I'm
- 17:43quite I'm starting to come around to playing that again,
- 17:46now, Mmm, Yeah, the thought of playing that again is I don't
- 17:53know if it's exciting but yeah, I'm starting to want to again so
- 17:56that was the third person shooter genre.
- 17:59Next is You pick something a bit smaller.
- 18:05I know you don't know what's in each genre, but puzzle.
- 18:09Yeah, let's do puzzle. Puzzles.
- 18:12Quite good. Quite a good selection.
- 18:14I think. So it's could be interesting.
- 18:16So if you probably got Tetris in here Pat man, yep braid.
- 18:22Yep, portal. Yep.
- 18:28Coming by the others, hit me. Portal 2.
- 18:31Yep. World of Goo, right?
- 18:36You remember that game that we played such a long time ago.
- 18:39Yeah, very vaguely phone in. Yeah, that was an early one.
- 18:43I hated that game was crap. Is that all of them?
- 18:48That's it Portal. 2, followed runner-up Portal 1.
- 18:53I've said in the Portal 2 episode and I said it in a few
- 18:55episodes before. We touch that game, that Portal
- 18:572 is in my top 5 video games of all time.
- 19:00I think it's The the YouTube channel Nerd Cubed described
- 19:06portal a portal to a, can't remember which one it was as the
- 19:09perfect game. And I don't think I'd ever I'd
- 19:11go that far, but it is damn near close to being perfect.
- 19:14In my opinion, it's fantastic. The humor is very British and
- 19:18very on the nose and it just works.
- 19:23And it's yeah, fantastic. So portal to runner-up portal.
- 19:27What do you think? I also go for Portal 2.
- 19:32Yeah, but my runner-up is different purely for variety's
- 19:35sake. We've got one definitive Portal
- 19:37game which is Portal 2 and I would go for braid as my
- 19:42runner-up. I was really.
- 19:43Yeah. You like bread, didn't you?
- 19:45Yeah. I was really pleasantly
- 19:46surprised by Braden and the conundrums in that game I didn't
- 19:50look at any guys for that. So the conundrums in that game
- 19:53will really, I don't think I did.
- 19:54Anyway, some of them really stumped me so I was I was
- 19:59playing around for Age. And then you've got the reveal
- 20:01at the end, and it's just a nice little game, isn't it?
- 20:05Yeah, I enjoyed prayed. It was a pleasant surprise.
- 20:09Just wanted to pay on switch. I remember we played on.
- 20:11Yeah, Xbox. He Yeah, fair enough.
- 20:16Yeah, not really much more to say.
- 20:18Portal 2. I don't think it's perfect just
- 20:21because it still runs on that old Half-Life 2 engine and
- 20:24therefore some of the movement and that is not as smooth as it
- 20:30could be. But yeah in terms of the puzzles
- 20:32is so delightful, isn't it? Yeah it is fantastic.
- 20:35That the presentation, the area's, you go to in this game
- 20:39as you say, the voice acting the comedy.
- 20:42Yes it's a very nice little game.
- 20:48Okay, next we're going to go. Four.
- 20:58We're going to go for a genre. As you know, we're gonna go for
- 21:02the adventure. Genre, what do you think is
- 21:04going to be? There are three games in this
- 21:05genre. This one's a bit trickier.
- 21:08Yeah, I honestly don't know because you could say that
- 21:11there's Elder games are in this thing.
- 21:13But if there are only 3 then, no I'm not sure.
- 21:18I was trying to wrap my brain about our and you mentioned it
- 21:20earlier at the start. So now I don't know what.
- 21:23We got three games. Well there's only there's only
- 21:26one pure Adventure game in their brilliant.
- 21:30Okay. It's enough to warrant in the
- 21:32genre because it is, The purest of pure Adventure game.
- 21:36Okay? Again that we played very early.
- 21:39Grim Fandango? Yeah.
- 21:43Okay. See that that that's one that
- 21:45I'd struggle to put into a category but I can see why it is
- 21:50an adventure game so I think lik.
- 21:52Yeah, point-and-click Adventure. Yeah.
- 21:54Yeah. So Grim Fandango.
- 21:57So that's that's one the second one doesn't fit neatly in any
- 22:03genre. And actually it's a game that we
- 22:05played as part of the latest election which I've included
- 22:10just because it could be bothered to take it out, really
- 22:11this girl easy. Yeah.
- 22:13I put disc only gym in there because it doesn't fit nicely
- 22:16unless I put narrative. Yeah, venture or something.
- 22:21And the last one is not, it's not an adventure game but really
- 22:24fuck. I know it's put it so I put it
- 22:28in there which is another game that we played very recently,
- 22:31which really should go walking simulator.
- 22:33What do you think that is? I can't remember.
- 22:39But help Stanley Parable. Of course, I've just looked Grim
- 22:46Fandango. We said that was an early game
- 22:48as game that we ever we ever did.
- 22:51And that came out in the 23rd of February twenty twenty.
- 22:54So that was before even lockdown.
- 22:58We were born, wasn't it? That was before.
- 23:00I was born, I remember that very vividly.
- 23:02I remember playing through that game because my auntie was quite
- 23:04unwell at the time, and I remember throwing mine on to,
- 23:07and fro to go and see her. So I vividly remember playing
- 23:11Grim Fandango, and I quite enjoyed it.
- 23:14I mean it was very obtuse sometimes and not very obvious
- 23:17and juices. We did after use a guide a few
- 23:21times throughout a lot, but at the same time, I really like the
- 23:27world and the vibe that game built, you know, isn't something
- 23:31that was really seen since Stanley Parable as well.
- 23:36I know it became though. Yeah, 100%.
- 23:39Stanley, Parable, I really enjoyed.
- 23:41I thought was good. I think I enjoyed Stanley
- 23:43Parable a lot more than you did. Not that you didn't enjoy it.
- 23:46I know that you picked up a bit of fun from it, but I put quite
- 23:50a bit of time into that game and thought was for, it was great.
- 23:54But yeah, disco Elysium wins. I was excited that we're going
- 23:59to get to cover disco Elysium because I played it before we
- 24:03covered it. And I remember saying to you
- 24:05that you need to play it but I think that the Atmosphere that
- 24:10game pushes up the, the World building the characterization.
- 24:14The writing is all just superb, and I'd probably put this girl
- 24:21easy and I've been my top 10 games of all time, I think so.
- 24:25Yeah, this girl he's in Windsor and the runner will probably be
- 24:27the Stanley. Parable, Interesting to see
- 24:30where you're going to go with this.
- 24:32Well, you sign, yeah, but I'm putting Grim Fandango in second
- 24:36place. Okay?
- 24:37Yeah, fair enough, I think you're right when we, when we
- 24:39play Grim Fandango, I think it was probably too early on and I
- 24:45think we would have given it a bit more leeway.
- 24:49If we'd have played a bit later, maybe because we kind of got
- 24:52into a bit of a Groove with the games and also we kind of got to
- 24:57know the quality of some of the games.
- 24:59And that game is unique that game does a lot, right?
- 25:03Visuals, soundtrack Voice work, just the stylings, and the
- 25:10atmosphere, and the story. But the voice acting and I games
- 25:15superb. Yeah.
- 25:17It's just that some of the, the, the puzzles are ridiculous.
- 25:21Yeah. Ludicrous.
- 25:23But some were. All right, well, when we
- 25:26uploaded that that was that was a completely different life when
- 25:30we were uploading the episodes on to on to your YouTube channel
- 25:34but also the start of each episode back, then I'd edit them
- 25:38in a way that they'd always be a bit dialogue from the game or
- 25:40the You know, the thing that it was related to at the start and
- 25:44if you just want to get a feel for just like how good the voice
- 25:47acting is in Grim Fandango, just go back and listen.
- 25:49It's the second episode on our entire list, but just go back
- 25:54and listen to the first 30 seconds of the episode from the
- 25:56beginning. Because I think I put a piece of
- 25:59dialogue in there from where money meets I can remember the
- 26:02woman about lady face. Yeah, lady face, mrs.
- 26:07Blobby about Really good. So yeah, I think I can
- 26:16understand you putting that as a runner-up.
- 26:18Where do you wanna go next platform?
- 26:22Okay, I've won games. I've I'm guessing majority.
- 26:26The Mario games are going to be in here, but there is also one
- 26:29that I think will win this for me.
- 26:32Bob interests here. What you put in here?
- 26:35Yeah, I think I know what. So before you speak before?
- 26:38So first, I'll read off the names.
- 26:40Yep. And then, I'm going to guess
- 26:42what you're going to go for? Yep.
- 26:46Okay platforms. Super Mario Galaxy yep.
- 26:50Super Mario, Galaxy 2, Super Mario Odyssey, LittleBigPlanet.
- 26:55Remember that game. I do vaguely Super Mario Advance
- 27:01for Super Mario. Bros 3, nice long title.
- 27:05Super Mario 64 Ori and the will-o'-the-wisps Super Mario,
- 27:113D World. And finally, the curveball
- 27:15Celeste. Okay.
- 27:17And what do you think? I'm going to go for.
- 27:21But it's between Mario 3D World and Celeste.
- 27:28I think you're going to go for 3D world but I think Celeste
- 27:31will be a runner-up. Know, it be Celeste that.
- 27:35It's devilishly hard games too, wasn't it?
- 27:38Sorry. It was down to those two, wasn't
- 27:40it? Yeah, I'd say so, you know, I
- 27:45don't think anyone surprised. I'm not going to make Mario 64.
- 27:48My number one in this category. Everyone will be shocked.
- 27:52If you're a betting person, you've lost money on that, I
- 27:55imagined, but no Celeste. It is frustrating game.
- 28:00It was hard, but we've done 100 and 110 episodes now.
- 28:07And we've done 99 of the original 100 games, as well as
- 28:10additionals. And I've all those episodes,
- 28:12there are games, I've really enjoyed talking about, but I
- 28:14think Celeste is one of my favorite episodes that we've
- 28:17done? I think, because we touched on
- 28:20quite a lot of things that we don't normally talk about and,
- 28:24you know, Celeste is so heavily linked with With mental health.
- 28:30And, you know, being open and talking about these things is
- 28:34something that I'm quite passionate about and I really
- 28:37liked, we're talking about that game took us because like I say,
- 28:41it isn't something that would really spoken about before, but
- 28:46just because we had a good conversation about it doesn't
- 28:48mean that's the reason that it's on, you know, my number one in
- 28:51this category. I think this is a very tight
- 28:54game. I think that's a very fair game.
- 28:56It's a hard game, but I think the writing He's very good.
- 29:00The themes are very good and also what you walk away with at
- 29:04the end of it, like really making you think was good.
- 29:08So yeah, Celeste winds up for me and then 3D World.
- 29:11Mario is my runner-up, just because I think that's the best
- 29:16Mario game that we've played followed followed closely by
- 29:20Odyssey. I liked Odyssey, but yeah. 3D
- 29:22World clinches the runner-up position for me.
- 29:24What do you have to say? What do you think I'm going to
- 29:28say, maybe Mario Galaxy. Or 64.
- 29:38So, I think I've made it. No secret that.
- 29:43I'm not as big a fan of the Mario games as I am of the Zelda
- 29:47game. Yeah. so, My winner is also
- 29:52Celeste. Okay, I played Celeste before
- 29:55and I remember very clearly the first time I played it, played
- 30:00it in Vietnam. I'm so some of the rave reviews
- 30:02still feel like they games a bit underrated.
- 30:05Yeah. Because not many people talk
- 30:08about it now. No it's a special game and It
- 30:13plays really well, that the challenge is just right.
- 30:18The way that the story and the challenge of the game lineup is
- 30:25just perfect, the art Style, the music.
- 30:32Just yeah, it's a quite a, quite an experience.
- 30:36And There are very few games that I'm referring again to
- 30:41this, this idea that everything lines up.
- 30:44You've got that the quite literally.
- 30:48Celeste is climbing a mountain, you've got the challenge which
- 30:52is ramping up. You've got the fact that she in
- 30:56her own life is trying to overcome her mental health.
- 31:02Her anxiety, isn't it? Yeah.
- 31:06Everything just ramps up perfectly and it's just a
- 31:11specialist will game. My runner-up is a Mario game.
- 31:15It would be Mario Galaxy. Yep, but yeah.
- 31:20I think it's purely because I'm not necessarily saying it's
- 31:25objectively better than other Mario games because it's just
- 31:29your favorite. Like yeah.
- 31:31I don't know if I could make that argument but yeah it's the
- 31:33one that touched me most deeply in the same way that I think it
- 31:36did for you. Yeah.
- 31:38I liked Galaxy. It was Oh, What Celeste?
- 31:42Yes. Yeah. 100% I put I always put
- 31:46Celeste very close to what remains of Edith Finch for some
- 31:49reason. It up totally different genres
- 31:51of game, but what amazes me to think, I kind of holding the
- 31:56similar regard to Celeste, you know?
- 31:59Yeah that that game I didn't didn't Vibe with it me as much
- 32:02but yeah so you finish it? Yeah missed it.
- 32:07Maybe we'll talk about that game one day.
- 32:10Yeah, I think I've Heard lots of things about what remains of
- 32:15Edith. Maybe maybe a bit like Bioshock
- 32:17for you. It had lots of things about it
- 32:19before I played it, you're expecting it to be more than
- 32:22what it was. Yeah.
- 32:25I went in and it's not a bad game.
- 32:28I didn't dislike it but it I read some things that I read
- 32:33some articles by people that that really it really resonated
- 32:37with them, it just didn't resonate with me to the.
- 32:39Yeah, that's fair. Enough.
- 32:42Okay, I'm going to pick the next strategy.
- 32:46I just gave that what you're gonna do?
- 32:48You're gonna make the next strategy Choice strategy.
- 32:53Okay, so what we got in here, we've got six games.
- 32:59Okay. Company of Heroes.
- 33:03Yeah. That's one star.
- 33:06Whatever it was called Starcraft Starcraft.
- 33:12I can't I can't think the other ones.
- 33:16Sid Meier's Civilization, of course Sid Meier's Civilization
- 33:20for your favorite game ever Dwarf Fortress?
- 33:23Yeah, love that. And this one, I don't really
- 33:28know where it goes. But I think there are elements
- 33:31of strategy in there, but it doesn't fit neatly into a genre.
- 33:34So I put it here, Minecraft. I did put Minecraft in sandbox.
- 33:41It's not quite the same as the other games, in the sample, Jean
- 33:43well-known. And and and these are the rules
- 33:45in. This is the list.
- 33:46So we will abide by, you'll see when we come to the sandbox
- 33:49genre there. There's a there's a yeah line
- 33:51through them okay. I'd say Minecraft wins it
- 33:56followed by Company of Heroes. I thought I really like Company
- 34:01of Heroes compared to the other games that we did in this genre.
- 34:05I don't think I'll play a load of it but I played enough to
- 34:08Have an opinion and that game stood out from the others.
- 34:11Like, I didn't really Vibe with Starcraft and Dwarf Fortress was
- 34:14a bit, so that would be my, but, yeah, Minecraft is Minecraft,
- 34:19isn't it? And I think that if I was maybe
- 34:23born, 15 years later than 1991, Minecraft will probably have
- 34:29controlled my life in some way for quite a long time.
- 34:33I'm just not really the right age for Minecraft, but it is
- 34:36fantastic. And openness in that the The I
- 34:42don't know the scale of it is just it's endless, isn't it?
- 34:45So yeah I'd say Minecraft wins it and I don't think our episode
- 34:49of Minecraft we really did it justice as to how big that game
- 34:51is. But yeah that was a redo
- 34:55episode. That was a game that was an
- 34:57episode. That Pierre.
- 34:58Is that we get a few here and there that you don't feel like
- 35:01you've done Justice. Yeah.
- 35:03What yours. I'm going to Echo what you said.
- 35:08I don't really have much interest in this genre, but I
- 35:11did enjoy Company of Heroes and I I put more time into
- 35:16Minecraft. And then I have any of these
- 35:18other games on the strategy at least I know it's not purely
- 35:22strategy. It's sort of a construction
- 35:27seemed in a way, isn't it? And yeah, that was the element
- 35:30that I really enjoyed just building stuff and maybe if I
- 35:35was younger I would have carried on with that.
- 35:37But yeah, I just got to the point where I thought I'm just
- 35:40spending too long building this thing now.
- 35:42So I'm going to stop playing understandable.
- 35:45Yeah. Yeah, I don't really have much
- 35:48more to say about strategy to be honest.
- 35:50Far enough Minecraft wins. All right so you're pick next
- 35:57and go racing. Okay so in the racing genre, we
- 36:05have Gran Turismo. Gran Turismo 3.
- 36:11A spec burnouts 3, take down. I've again, I mean there is a
- 36:17racing. You do racing in that game, but
- 36:19it's also. Yeah, she simulator and Gran
- 36:23Turismo 2. Probably take down most fun
- 36:28because there's, you know, a lot of different gameplay things
- 36:32that you can do with it. I think I can't this wasn't an
- 36:36earlier early game but it was, you know, it was relatively
- 36:40early on and I think like the first 25 issue.
- 36:43Yeah, I think I struggled to play this on my PS2.
- 36:47Yea, if memory serves me, but know that is a fun game and the
- 36:50only reason I choose that over the GT games is just because
- 36:54Gran Turismo is Gran Turismo. It's just a driving a racing
- 36:57game wearers takedown had a bit more about it, which I enjoyed a
- 37:01bit more. So runner-up will probably be
- 37:03Gran Turismo 3, but takedown would win it for me.
- 37:08What do you think? Yeah, it's an easy win for me.
- 37:11I really like burnout three takedown.
- 37:14I've got fond memories of playing it at the time, and I
- 37:17really enjoyed playing it again. I was doing all the crash events
- 37:22and that was load of fun and I even considered buying Burnout
- 37:26Revenge, which was the successors of burnout.
- 37:29Three take down. Yeah, I really like this game
- 37:31and To me, it's a bit of a no-brainer terms of Gran Turismo
- 37:36games. I because we have three of them
- 37:40on the list and every time we got to the next one, I thought.
- 37:42Well maybe this is the one that's going to grab me and it
- 37:45never did. Yeah, so the only Gran Turismo
- 37:47game that's grabbed me. I mentioned this a few times
- 37:50over the course of the Gran Turismo.
- 37:51Episodes is Gran Turismo 5 prologue.
- 37:56That's the only Gran Turismo game of got into.
- 37:58And None of these got me. So yeah easy.
- 38:03We've been up three followed by Gran Turismo as the runner-up.
- 38:06Yeah, honestly, sorry, yeah. All right, next Let's go to
- 38:14sandbox. Let's what's going to be inside
- 38:17box? I don't know.
- 38:18I've got literally no idea what you want to put in here, so I'm
- 38:21intrigued. Sandbox is your rock star
- 38:26category for Isaac Lee. So every single thing in this
- 38:30category is Rockstar probably, okay.
- 38:34Which, I mean, I suppose it's a problem right there, really?
- 38:38But the Rockstar genre, it is basically Grand Theft Auto, 4,
- 38:45Red Dead. Redemption to Grand Theft Auto 5
- 38:49Grand Theft. Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto San
- 38:52Andreas Grand Theft Auto Vice City.
- 38:54It's the next one going to be Grand Theft Auto Red Dead
- 38:57Redemption. Ah, Grand Theft Auto Chinatown
- 39:00Wars. Well, to be honest with you,
- 39:05when you said rockstar, I immediately thought of Grand
- 39:06Theft Auto but I'd forgotten Red Dead Redemption.
- 39:10So when you said red dead, then I was oh yeah.
- 39:12Obviously there's only going to be red dead in there so I
- 39:15thought well it's got to have some competition.
- 39:17Yeah, pretty easy choice for me Red.
- 39:21Dead Redemption, two wins and funnily enough.
- 39:25I've been watching a load of read Dead 2 videos over the past
- 39:28kind of week and I'm really, really Keen to Play It Again.
- 39:32That was that was one of our longer episodes that was one of
- 39:35our longest. I think that we've ever done was
- 39:38the longest apart from the golden ranking episodes.
- 39:41I really because we we did two parts.
- 39:45Yeah, we split into two gold and I was about an hour and 40 an
- 39:49hour and fifty something like that.
- 39:51I'm going to look it up. Actually, why you speak in a
- 39:52minute? How long old?
- 39:53And I was, but yeah, read Dead 2, so good like it's cursed by
- 40:00its own. You know, realism in Parts, I
- 40:05think, but the, the story of Arthur Morgan and his journey
- 40:10and his transition as a character after again.
- 40:15Spoilers After he finds out, he's got tuberculosis.
- 40:19And if you're playing the game, as the narration wants you to
- 40:22play it, him trying to become a better man.
- 40:24Before he before he dies is just fantastic.
- 40:28The open worlds, amazing. The amount of stuff you can do
- 40:31in that game. Is fantastic, and it looks
- 40:33beautiful as well. This is the 2018 games that
- 40:35still looks fantastic by today's standards.
- 40:39So Red Dead, Redemption to is an easy winner for me, followed
- 40:43probably, because this is just our opinion and not trying to be
- 40:47subjects. Objective subjective is, and now
- 40:52it's not trying to sound Wars funnily enough, but I imagine
- 40:55that will probably be your favorite.
- 40:58It's Vice City just because I love that game.
- 41:01It's The one that I think about most when I think about Grand
- 41:04Theft Auto follow closely after that by maybe GTA 3 but not
- 41:09because I like GTA 3 just because Nostalgia but yeah read
- 41:13Dead 2 and then Vice City. What about you?
- 41:19As I said, this is a favorites list rather than a grading this.
- 41:22So I'm going for my favorite of those games which is San
- 41:25Andreas. Mmm, and I would put read Dead 2
- 41:29into as a runner-up. But yeah, I mean, there is
- 41:33nostalgia in there. I also think, if you take away
- 41:37some of the clunky control elements of San Andreas, which
- 41:39are definitely there, the atmosphere, and the moments that
- 41:43you can have in that game. I still pretty special I
- 41:46described driving along in the countryside with the rain
- 41:51beating down, and then the radio playing, and it's still awesome.
- 41:57So yeah. Yeah, that's fair enough.
- 42:00Yeah, that's my choice. I think us our to be on rock
- 42:02stars to be honest in recent probably 5 10 years.
- 42:08Yeah, I get that it that that their game design become very
- 42:11say me. So I'll be interested to see
- 42:12what they do. A GTA 6 and obviously they
- 42:16haven't released a GTA since 2013, 2012 2013.
- 42:20Yeah. GoldenEye was an hour, 43
- 42:24minutes and Red Dead Redemption. 2002 out was the first part was
- 42:3154 minutes and the second part was an hour and nine minutes.
- 42:36So yeah, that's our longest episode that game one.
- 42:40I think it's funny though, because it feels like GoldenEye
- 42:43was a much longer episode because we talked about that one
- 42:45quite in depth, but yes, we were also running the gamut of a bond
- 42:49stuff as well, which was fun. I enjoyed the golden episode.
- 42:53Yeah, I've been playing that again, recently, on Game Pass.
- 42:56Have you? Yes, it's on Game Pass on Xbox.
- 42:59Yeah, it's on the Nintendo's online service as well which is
- 43:04that they've done something weird with that because I think
- 43:07it's that you can only play online on a switch and on Xbox.
- 43:11You can play split screen but you can't pay online which makes
- 43:14no sense to me other than companies doing Yeah, I didn't
- 43:18quite get that. But alas onwards, we go.
- 43:24All right, so what we've got left are action adventure.
- 43:31Action. First person shooter.
- 43:35Fighting stealth. Japanese role-playing.
- 43:41Race are no dumb racing extreme sports.
- 43:45That's that's the categories we've got left.
- 43:46What's your next pick FPS? Okay, so the big one.
- 43:51Okay. So we've got let me count how
- 43:56many games you got here, quite a few 15 games in here.
- 44:00Okay, interesting, what I mean, we'll have all the Cod games and
- 44:03stuff and everywhere else we got.
- 44:05We've got perfect Arc. Next game is an FPS, but it
- 44:12doesn't quite fit with the other ones which is Metroid Prime.
- 44:16Halo Combat Evolved, Half-Life 2 Bioshock.
- 44:22Again, it's more of an immersive.
- 44:24The it's yeah yes GoldenEye 007 Team Fortress 2 again more of a
- 44:33multiplayer but it's done. Yes, yes.
- 44:36I have a most pleasure on ra, Half-Life Halo 2.
- 44:42Bioshock infinite's Call of Duty.
- 44:45Modern Warfare 2. Call of Duty. 4, Modern Warfare.
- 44:49Quake Halo 3 and Unreal Tournament 2004.
- 44:55Yeah, is a lot of games. I think your answer is going to
- 44:58be quite vastly different from mine.
- 45:00My number one is Modern Warfare 2, just because I spent so many
- 45:06hours of my mid to late teens playing that game with friends
- 45:09and playing online you know is etched into my brain as I think
- 45:14as as any kind of gamer our age would say And plus, I really, I
- 45:21think the story and that games really decent as well and the
- 45:24maps and yeah, Modern Warfare 2 is our classic and I would say
- 45:28that would be having a runner-up of between GoldenEye and Halo 3,
- 45:36but I'd probably have to say gold and I really enjoyed
- 45:39playing Halo 3. And I really enjoyed the
- 45:40multiplayer stuff that we did with that.
- 45:43Which is kind of pushed me to be like, yeah, that could be it.
- 45:45But now I think it would be cold and I just because of the amount
- 45:49of I played that game as a kid and how good it still is now.
- 45:54So yeah, Modern Warfare 2 and GoldenEye.
- 45:57This is a hard one, I think you're going to say BioShock.
- 46:02I'm not because it's not my favorite BioShock game.
- 46:05Okay, BioShock 2 is my Bioshock. Favorite BioShock game, I like
- 46:08Bioshock, but there's a lot of good stuff in here.
- 46:14I don't know if I really Expressed how much I like this
- 46:19game in the episode. I don't really remember the
- 46:21episode that well which is a bit odd but I remember playing it
- 46:24again recently so I think I'm going to go for Perfect Dark,
- 46:28huh? The reason being it's like
- 46:33GoldenEye but better house better.
- 46:35Yeah. Yeah, it likes the bond license
- 46:39but it's also Prime rare. It's that Golden Era.
- 46:45They're also first-person shooters of a style that you
- 46:49don't get any. Yes, definitely.
- 46:53I can't remember how many times I've mentioned this juggling
- 46:55mechanic that you have in gold and I way you shoot an enemy and
- 46:58you stagger them and then you can shoot another enemy and your
- 47:02stagger them and you can go back to the first and I mean, shoot
- 47:04them. And this kind of juggling that
- 47:06you do is strategic and you don't really see that very often
- 47:11in Shooters and I really like that.
- 47:14Yeah, I'm a big fan of perfect Arc, and I think the
- 47:18refinements. They're made to the story and
- 47:22the two player co-op and the multiplayer with Bots.
- 47:26Just some really good improvements.
- 47:28As for number two, I think I'm going to go from Modern Warfare
- 47:322. I had a great time playing that.
- 47:35When it first came out, I mentioned how fond I was of that
- 47:38game as well. The spec ops mode.
- 47:41Yeah, single-player and multiplayer, I That's been
- 47:45countless hours in that game. So yeah, for that reason alone.
- 47:48I think it's number two as as the runner-up.
- 47:50Yeah. I feel that I feel that.
- 47:55GoldenEye would be number three. Yeah, of course.
- 47:58I'm gonna go for Fighting your favorite genre.
- 48:03Yeah, what's in our fighting genre?
- 48:06We've got seven games, Tekken 3 Virtua Fighter for the street
- 48:14fighter games. I can't remember what numbers
- 48:16they are to Street Fighter. Alpha 3 and Street Fighter 4
- 48:19Soul. Calibur, Yep.
- 48:24Smash Brothers. I went streeters.
- 48:28Street fights are gross, street fights for twice and I have done
- 48:30that. Yeah, and I try did Chuck Smash
- 48:33Bros in there because Smash Bros brawl because It doesn't it's
- 48:39not it's a they call it like a platform fighter.
- 48:42Yeah but it is a fighter yeah it's not an arcade fighter like
- 48:46the others but it's a fighter now.
- 48:47It's not like the other. It's not it's not an arena
- 48:49fighting no way. So yeah where are you going with
- 48:55this one? Virtua Fighter 4.
- 48:58As my number one I mentioned in an episode and I mentioned it
- 49:01numerous times at Virtua Fighter 4 was the game that I got with
- 49:03my PS2 when I got it in like I don't know.
- 49:07And to whenever it was and for a long time that was the only game
- 49:12I had. So I played it quite a lot and
- 49:15was blown away by the graphics of it compared to what the PS1
- 49:18can do. So that takes it mostly from the
- 49:22style just point of view I think and from childhood and then
- 49:26probably followed by Smash Bros. I think I mentioned in that
- 49:30episode that the Smash Bros brawl wasn't really a game.
- 49:33I was that familiar with growing up.
- 49:36I play quite a lot of The GameCube Smash Bros melee but
- 49:40Smash Bros it Smash Bros, isn't it?
- 49:42So it's always a good laugh but yeah, Virtua Fighter 4 and then,
- 49:46Smash Brothers. What about you?
- 49:49I'm going for Soulcalibur is number one.
- 49:52I really enjoyed. I didn't complete it by any
- 49:55means, but I really enjoyed it that game and it's a game that I
- 49:58probably go back to and I'd follow that out with as a
- 50:02runner-up, Super Smash Bros brawl, not a lot of these
- 50:06fighting games did much. For me, but those two were
- 50:08enjoyable. Yeah, that's what I've got to
- 50:11say about that. Yeah, that's all I got to say
- 50:14about that. That's my Forrest Gump,
- 50:17impression. I hope you enjoyed it.
- 50:19I'm going to take over now with picking the categories just as
- 50:21we ramp up. Yeah, that's fine.
- 50:24So we're going to go next to extreme sports.
- 50:29Okay. What do you think we've got in
- 50:32here? The pro skater games?
- 50:34SSX. Yep, jet grind radio.
- 50:40Yes, that's it. So we've got Tony Hawk's Pro,
- 50:43Skater 2, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, Tony, Hawk's Pro Skater, 4,
- 50:48jet grind, radio and SSX. So where are you going Pro
- 50:53Skater? 3 wins?
- 50:56That's the game. I played the most obvious, a
- 50:58teenager I loved the music and Okay.
- 51:00My love the maps I did kind of screw myself over when we came
- 51:05to doing it for the podcast because although I played it on
- 51:09the PS2 load when I was a teenager for some reason when we
- 51:12reviewed it. Well talked about it for this
- 51:14list. I played on the PS1 which was
- 51:17not a good shout, but we live and learn be a Pro Skater 3 wins
- 51:22that for me, probably followed by Pro Skater 2 and particularly
- 51:28playing pro skater through. Pro Skater through Pro Skater 2
- 51:33on the re the Remake that was it was dark.
- 51:37Yeah there. Yeah, we're really good.
- 51:41So yeah. Pro Skater, 3 and Pro Skater 2.
- 51:43What about you? I think you're going to say SSX
- 51:45as one of them? No.
- 51:48Well, I was wrong. Well, I liked SSX, I liked jet
- 51:53grind radio but was quite frustrating.
- 51:55I like all of these games. Unlike the other sports, genre
- 51:59this one. I can always get behind extreme
- 52:02sports because are always a bit wacky right there, always a bit
- 52:04more arcadey. But yeah.
- 52:07Number 3, followed by number two, had a great time with both
- 52:10of them replaying them got. Nostalgia for them.
- 52:13Great soundtracks, just fun to play Tony Hawk's Pro.
- 52:18Skater 4 was a bit of a disappointment because it
- 52:20changed some of the stuff that I really liked about three and
- 52:22two. Yeah, yeah.
- 52:25So I've got say about it really. Yes.
- 52:27I mean, some of these genres are a bit that they're not nothing
- 52:29genres but stuff That we don't have as much to talk about, you
- 52:32know. Yeah.
- 52:33And it doesn't it doesn't really fit in the sports genre.
- 52:36No, because they're not Sports really but yeah well that they
- 52:40are. But yeah I mean all right, onto
- 52:44our action, genre So, we've got five games here, all fairly
- 52:53similar, but they could have also gone in other genres to the
- 52:57Zelda game. No, I'll name the first one and
- 53:01see if you can get the other ones from that Devil May Cry.
- 53:08I don't know. Devil May Cry.
- 53:11No, tell me. So we've also got Ninja Gaiden,
- 53:16black, of course. The original God of War.
- 53:20Yep, Hades because Hades, I suppose I could have put in RPG
- 53:25but no. Hey, this is a roguelike but
- 53:27it's the only Road like, yeah. But listen necklace.
- 53:30The only. Yeah, so yeah, I stuck it here
- 53:34instead because the action genre thought, well, it's sort of an
- 53:37actual. Yeah.
- 53:39God of Auto that says there that they're what's on the action
- 53:43list five games. What was the first one you said?
- 53:45Okay. Yeah, DMC and Ninja Gaiden.
- 53:50Hades would probably win it for me.
- 53:52I thought Hades was pretty good lied.
- 53:57It's a very good looking game. It functions really well.
- 54:00The characters are really cool. Yeah, like Hades was good time
- 54:05hard and I didn't complete it, but it was, it was a good time.
- 54:10Hey, these winds that and I guess the first God of War would
- 54:16probably be the runner-up for me.
- 54:19To be honest, all the games that you've listed in this category
- 54:21other than Hades not for you know not really like I really
- 54:26didn't enjoy DMC or Ninja Gaiden off that.
- 54:30No funnily enough. No but yeah Hades and then God
- 54:35of War one, what about you? I think you're going to say got
- 54:37a war to I think you're going to say Ninja Gaiden black.
- 54:41Correct. What?
- 54:42All the God of War 2 wins and Ninja Gaiden to run up?
- 54:48Yeah, correct. Yes.
- 54:50I really like God of War 2 and and there's so we've got the
- 54:54other God of War games come based in a different genre.
- 54:57And I think that's right. Really.
- 54:58Because did mention any episodes, these games are quite
- 55:01different from the new ones. So I thought they fit more
- 55:07nicely. Yeah, in this genre, they're
- 55:08quite close to Devil May Cry. Without the combos.
- 55:13Although I remember that any other don't think they have got
- 55:16that, they do have combos wrong, so do have combos.
- 55:20But yeah, there's something they don't have but yeah, I don't
- 55:25have the ranking at the end. I think that's what this one.
- 55:27I mean I have the ranking at the end of the chapters.
- 55:30Yeah. So I really like a lot of water.
- 55:34I think the set pieces in that game are amazing.
- 55:38The crosses of Roads, the four horses Has of the Four Horsemen
- 55:43ship thing. Yes, that one that was good and
- 55:48I don't really like Ninja Gaiden black as well as challenging
- 55:51game. But once he gets his claws in
- 55:55you, I think it's really quite enjoyable.
- 55:57It mostly did my head in. Yes.
- 56:01But I can understand why you'd put it there.
- 56:03Wait, wait. Have it's all right.
- 56:07And it's quite unique as well. Yeah, it is and and everything
- 56:11else. So Yes.
- 56:14All right, we have left Japanese role-playing games, stealth
- 56:19games and action adventure. If we're not done Western RPGs,
- 56:25Yeah, we did them. Did it early on Mass Effect?
- 56:29Of course of course, of course? Yeah, yeah, go on.
- 56:35We're gonna do. Japanese role-playing game.
- 56:39Yeah, got four of them. What are they going to be?
- 56:42I can think of three Persona 4, Golden Persona 5 Royal and Final
- 56:46Fantasy 9. I can't think about what the
- 56:48fourth is. Chrono Cross, of course.
- 56:54I mean this would be a hard one for me because I really like
- 56:57Final Fantasy 9 and coming into it.
- 56:59The three Final Fantasy games that came out on the PS1 at the
- 57:03time Final Fantasy 7, 8 9 i-i've, got a lot of love for
- 57:07all three of them but obviously, because I talked about it quite
- 57:13often the we play the game that kind of stole it for me which
- 57:19was Persona 5, Royal, and I've got a hankering to play that
- 57:22again now as well. But I don't think I've got the
- 57:24time to put into another playthrough because it will take
- 57:27my entire life. So I would say Persona 5 Royal
- 57:31wins out in this category for me, followed by Final Fantasy 9.
- 57:34As much as I enjoyed Persona 4 Golden, I thought it was decent.
- 57:38Yeah. Final Fantasy, 9 hits the runner
- 57:41up position and very similar to how I recorded the Last of Us.
- 57:45Part 2. I think when we recorded Final
- 57:48Fantasy 9, if I thought you'd finished it like the morning
- 57:50that we record, it didn't you. I finished it about half an
- 57:53hour. Yeah, I remember you're a
- 57:56bitter. You're a bit Final Fantasy doubt
- 57:57with you. I was completely after that
- 58:00game. Yeah.
- 58:01And I don't think it landed well, partly, because of that
- 58:04partly. Because I don't know something
- 58:07about that game. Just just, I didn't didn't
- 58:08didn't kick with me. So for me, the only games are
- 58:14really clicked with me out of these four are five percent five
- 58:17and Center for. I would say Persona 5 is the
- 58:21better game. I think sign up for does do some
- 58:26things better as we discussed very recently in the episode but
- 58:30I think Persona 5 edges it for me.
- 58:32Yeah, so yeah, five them for bloody lovely.
- 58:36If you want to hear more of our thoughts on Persona, go and
- 58:38listen to that episode, quite those episodes.
- 58:42Yes, those episodes correct. Maybe we'll go to a Persona 3 at
- 58:46some point. Maybe I think I doing a remaster
- 58:48of it's a remake of a remake that.
- 58:51Yeah. So yeah maybe it will appear
- 58:54perhaps. The stealth genre.
- 58:58Now the reason I'm going to this one next is because there's only
- 59:01two franchises Representatives blind seller.
- 59:04Metal Gear, right? Yeah.
- 59:07So what we've got is Metal Gear, Solid 2, Sons of Liberty, Metal
- 59:13Gear Solid 5, the phantom pain, Metal Gear Solid, Tom Clancy's
- 59:18Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Metal Gear, Solid 3 subsistence
- 59:23Metal Gear Solid, 4, guns of the Patriots and Fancy a spin to
- 59:27sell Pandora, tomorrow. We mentioned earlier that we
- 59:35sometimes go into episodes and we feel that we haven't done a
- 59:38good job, talking about certain games.
- 59:41And I think that we both were in fact, I think we mentioned it on
- 59:43the very next episode. No.
- 59:46Because we did mgs3 and then we took a break didn't win.
- 59:48Then we came back immediately with mgs4 just one.
- 59:52Oh, yeah, yeah. And I remember saying, at the
- 59:55time, I think we mentioned it on.
- 59:56Mgs4 episode that we really wanted to do mgs3 justice, but
- 1:00:00we don't feel like we did sometimes when you record you
- 1:00:04could you kind of missed the mark a little bit and we walk
- 1:00:05away feeling like that. Wasn't a particularly great
- 1:00:08episode and I think we both felt that when we talked about mgs3,
- 1:00:12which is a shame. Because yeah, mgs3 is a favorite
- 1:00:15game for both of us. So our of these games would say
- 1:00:20mgs3 probably takes the top position for me.
- 1:00:24Just because I think Metal Gear Solid 3 is a Fantastic game.
- 1:00:27I'm very cautious about this remake that Konami are doing and
- 1:00:33I'm, yeah, I'm not sure about it, but yeah, mgs3 brilliant
- 1:00:38game. So good.
- 1:00:40Again, in my top 10 and the runner-up would be Metal Gear
- 1:00:44Solid 1, just because a is a great game, good story.
- 1:00:50And there's just something. So, nostalgic about that game
- 1:00:52for me. I think I mentioned it in the
- 1:00:54episode. I remember, you know, when I was
- 1:00:56young Walking with my dad him having a PlayStation magazine.
- 1:00:59And saying, oh, we can play the demo of this new game, Metal
- 1:01:01Gear Solid, which was just the docks at the start.
- 1:01:05But yeah, that game is it's got a very special place in my
- 1:01:08heart. So top position number three,
- 1:01:11runner-up position, the original Metal Gear Solid.
- 1:01:14What about you? Yeah, I'm just three is going
- 1:01:17top. I think I know what your run is
- 1:01:19going to be as well. Well, I was thinking about the
- 1:01:22runner-up because objectively I think mgs1 is this second best
- 1:01:27but if you askme, which game, I'd want to play Tomorrow based
- 1:01:31on the recent playthrough that we had and how much I enjoyed it
- 1:01:35was it would be mgs4, okay, and Chaos theories up there as well.
- 1:01:43But Yeah, games I have a hankering to play right now in
- 1:01:49the mood that I mean it will be three of them for.
- 1:01:52Yeah. So yeah, I had to think about
- 1:01:56that one a bit though. Mmm.
- 1:01:59Yeah, you've got a lot of love from just for as well.
- 1:02:02And I do which is so yeah, that doesn't surprise me too much.
- 1:02:07Yeah. And and You talked about the
- 1:02:11mgs3 episode. I don't really remember it that
- 1:02:13well, which kind of suggests that maybe we didn't do it
- 1:02:16justice, but Mgs4. I was really quite happy with
- 1:02:20the episode that we put out on that one.
- 1:02:21Yeah, I think that was a good episode.
- 1:02:24Yeah, that was a good one. And I remember that one quite
- 1:02:26fondly, that that whole period and sometimes it's tied to the
- 1:02:30period in your life when you're playing it.
- 1:02:31I just had a lot of time to play mgs4 and I just play through
- 1:02:35slowly and it just enjoyed it and that kicks off the latter 50
- 1:02:38of our list, as well. I'm just forehead it did.
- 1:02:40So we had a bit of a break before hand in way.
- 1:02:44All right, so, onto our not our biggest genre because that the
- 1:02:49first person shooters were but onto the action-adventure.
- 1:02:54Genre probably the broadest genre in a way Zelda's in here.
- 1:02:58Zoda is in here, but we've also got some other.
- 1:03:01Yeah, entries in there as well. Where to start with this Ocarina
- 1:03:08of Time, breath of the wild Batman Arkham City.
- 1:03:14Wow, Twilight. Princess, you forgot about that
- 1:03:17guy. Yeah, dude, that was early one
- 1:03:18as well. The Wind Waker.
- 1:03:24The original Legend of Zelda. Actually, you're number one,
- 1:03:28Zelda 2, The Adventure of Link. A Link to the Past Majora's
- 1:03:34Mask, and God of War. Do you think that there's a
- 1:03:39couple of game series in this list?
- 1:03:40That's over represented a little bit.
- 1:03:42Yeah, we've got the rock stars and we got the rockstars MGS in
- 1:03:45Zelda and Mario and, and yeah, I'm Jess is, oh yeah, they're a
- 1:03:50lot. So Do you want to start with
- 1:03:55this one? Because you took your two
- 1:03:59favorite games will timer in this in this category.
- 1:04:02So, imagine you've got a bit to say, Yeah, this is an easy one
- 1:04:07for me and I still I flip flop with this recently.
- 1:04:17I'm coming down on the side of Majora's Mask so I think
- 1:04:22Majora's Mask is number one for me and the runner.
- 1:04:24I would be breath the wild. Yeah, I was very happy with the
- 1:04:30Majora's Mask episode that we did and I thought the breath of
- 1:04:33the world episode was very good as well.
- 1:04:37Things like Arkham City, the good games, but they're just not
- 1:04:41quite there. Not quite on that level.
- 1:04:43No, I I'd probably put ice hard, because I really, really enjoyed
- 1:04:55Majora's Mask a lot. But the one thing that I liked
- 1:04:59about breath of the wild, over the other side, against Was the
- 1:05:03removal of like the dungeons or the classic Dungeons.
- 1:05:07And for me the story and Majora's Mask, and the
- 1:05:12atmosphere and everything about it was perfect.
- 1:05:16The only thing I didn't like about Majora's Mask was the fact
- 1:05:19that it was a Zelda game. So the dungeons But everything
- 1:05:24else about I gained was fantastic, whereas breath of the
- 1:05:27wild, it was fantastic, and it had removed, the element of the
- 1:05:31Zelda games. I didn't, like, I mentioned that
- 1:05:33in the breath of the world episode.
- 1:05:37So I'm going to say Majora's Mask, in first position, because
- 1:05:46I did really enjoy that game and just the darkness of it.
- 1:05:49It was, it was brilliant and Curveball, I'm going to say my
- 1:05:55runner-up is God of War. And I knew that that would be
- 1:05:59there somewhere for you. Mmm.
- 1:06:00Yeah, I enjoyed that and, you know, I've still not completed
- 1:06:04breath of the wild and I'm having a really good time with
- 1:06:07it. I've not played it for about a
- 1:06:09week or two now, but I want to go back and finish it.
- 1:06:13But yeah, God of War was just a little bit different for me and
- 1:06:17yeah, it's nice to a bit representation, isn't it?
- 1:06:19Yeah, 100 percent. So yes, I'd say Majora's, Mask
- 1:06:23first, and then God of War second.
- 1:06:26Yep. I think the air when I, when I
- 1:06:33think about what jurors mask is just so special, and it
- 1:06:35shouldn't have happened. Really, is it?
- 1:06:36Yeah. All the odds were against it and
- 1:06:39it was released in such a short time period.
- 1:06:41And it was everything because in the same way, that breath of the
- 1:06:46wild is anti Zelda. And in some ways, which is
- 1:06:50Majora's Mask is a mature, Deep Zelda, game with a story with
- 1:06:58music that's haunting and just a game that gets under your skin.
- 1:07:03Yeah, yeah. Does weird game.
- 1:07:08Okay, that's it. I was at least that's our genre
- 1:07:11episode. Yeah.
- 1:07:12Well, there you go. Yeah.
- 1:07:15Were you expecting any other genres to make it appear?
- 1:07:18No, but it just doesn't seem like we've just discussed over
- 1:07:20100 games unless well, I just over an hour.
- 1:07:23Yeah. Yeah, we were moving at quite a
- 1:07:26pace and I think we just discuss these games in more detail for
- 1:07:30our grading episode. Some of them.
- 1:07:31So we went into a more detail there and this the purpose of
- 1:07:36this episode wasn't to do that. It was to say, which is the,
- 1:07:41which is the best in a genre. Yeah, that kind of does it.
- 1:07:43We may do another one of these when we've made some progress in
- 1:07:46the open critic list. Yeah.
- 1:07:48And I mean, we've still got three games left that have been
- 1:07:51added into the Metacritic top, It in the last two years, as
- 1:07:56well as halflife, Alex, some point, but we've still got a
- 1:08:01house in fata. Morgana got a wall Ragnarok and
- 1:08:05Elden ring, so maybe we'll include those on a future list.
- 1:08:09I've been watching quite a few old and ring videos over the
- 1:08:11last few days. I'm looking forward to getting
- 1:08:12back the other day. I think I'm probably going to
- 1:08:16restart the game though because I've forgotten how to play it
- 1:08:18and I think I'm going to try and do a better build this time
- 1:08:20because I want into it completely blind with no idea as
- 1:08:22to what I was doing when I started it.
- 1:08:24Ausmus. So yeah, we'll see about that.
