- 1:32[SPEAKER_02]: Happy to be here.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_01]: I'm so happy to have you on.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_01]: Can you share a bit about your background and what led you to where you are today with our listeners?
- 1:39[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_02]: Although it's definitely not a linear path.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_02]: I would say I've had kind of a serendipitous journey.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_02]: It's been amazing.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_02]: But my background really was science.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_02]: It was chemistry and biology background.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_02]: Amazing.
- 1:54[SPEAKER_02]: Family brought up in.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_02]: I'm very blessed to have had that.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, did that.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_02]: And then went into actually went from there to Pat and law.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_02]: I went to law school.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_02]: Then I thought I was going to do pat and log with the science background.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_02]: And then I went into law and then branched into kind of planned giving
- 2:21[SPEAKER_02]: which involves law and finance and that was the bridge and then philanthropy and then overall health management.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_02]: So always working with families and in giving and planning out how to be meaningful and purposeful with their finances and how to steward even multi-generation finance as well.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_02]: in there would I would say had the girl interrupted experience in the best way we adapted three boys out of foster care.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_02]: Right during the law school experience so it was it was crazy I had three school aged kids during that experience but that has also been a big part of our journey as well and it's been amazing thus far.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_01]: What an amazing life you've led Valerie thank you for sharing that.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_01]: You know, at the IN team, we define responsible influence as intentionally using our actions and decisions to create a positive ripple effect.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_01]: How does this idea show up in your work with individuals and families navigating wealth and leadership?
- 3:24[SPEAKER_02]: Well, the ripple effect definitely makes me just think of how we affect others and how they affect others.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_02]: And so it's a very powerful concept in what I do because I'm working with families and individuals.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_02]: And then it influences their legacy.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not only next gen, their children, but grandchildren and even after that.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_02]: And it kind of flows over into their business entities, the charities they benefit.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_02]: You know, what I'm doing something that is that is hopefully what we're working on life changing and positive for them, that is really rippling out to those in their world that they're influencing.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_02]: So I love that favorite part of what I do that is truly amazing.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_01]: The bripples that you can see that you're creating.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_01]: directly for your clients and their families and then business.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_01]: That's amazing.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you for sharing that.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_01]: Can you tell us about a moment or experience?
- 4:16[SPEAKER_01]: For you thought you made a positive impact in someone's life?
- 4:19[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I've been fortunate to have several and the side of brag, if you get old enough, hopefully you've done that's the newest times, right?
- 4:27[SPEAKER_02]: It should be the case.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_02]: There's one woman that I just think out in particular that she came in to talk with me and she had just her husband had passed and so I have a lot of experience actually helping my mom's widows ministry.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_02]: We do some of that philanthropic work together that this lady came in to talk to me about finances overall and next gen and she was really dealing with a lot of
- 4:55[SPEAKER_02]: hurt and lost, but at the same time confusion around finances, she had really never done finance before in their home with their charities, even in the business that her husband was in.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_02]: So she was just really kind of scared.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_02]: She was scared.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_02]: She was going to make us a mistake.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_02]: She was doing something wrong.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_02]: She was just very nervous.
- 5:13[SPEAKER_02]: And so, and she was later in life and really was now going to steward a very large amount of money.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_02]: So, one of the things we would think is, well, I mean,
- 5:23[SPEAKER_02]: Not not the passing, but but having that stewardship ability, having abundance could be joyful, but it was kind of a double whammy of just so much hurt and fear for her.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_02]: So what I did is just work
- 5:37[SPEAKER_02]: little by little with her so she could gain confidence and I just remember there were times where she'd leave the office and she'd be like oh you know what this year I am gonna rent that beach house with my family I know I can do it I know how much we've got and I would just tell her hey you know her name and then you're making moves you're making moves and so she'd get that kind of smile a little bit of pattern her step from that and
- 6:02[SPEAKER_02]: And that's the joy that I get when I see something kind of moving needle for books and they're just happy.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_01]: What a perfect example of how you had a positive influence on someone.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you for sharing.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_01]: She's lucky that you were there for her.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_02]: Thanks.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_02]: So it was my honor to to walk with her in that journey.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_01]: Valerie, you've observed a confidence gap among women in financial spaces.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_01]: What are some of the practical ways you help close that gap through your events and conversations?
- 6:30[SPEAKER_01]: And what can others do to support that effort?
- 6:32[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so I see that confidence gap.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, there's good data around the fact that just women have a disproportionately affected sense of confidence, many.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, some don't, but certainly not to generalize, but there's just data that says women experience this
- 6:49[SPEAKER_02]: quite a bit in the financial arena.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_02]: And so one of the things I think I can do is put people's minds at ease that they're not the only one.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_02]: You're not alone.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_02]: Several people can feel that way about it.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_02]: And I like in it to look when I open the hood of my car, I don't know what's in there.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_02]: It doesn't mean I'm stupid.
- 7:06[SPEAKER_02]: It just means I don't want to make art, right?
- 7:09[SPEAKER_02]: So, but I definitely lack confidence when it comes to describing to a mechanic what's wrong with it.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_02]: And I think a lot of people feel that way about some areas of their finance and investing.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_02]: And so it's almost just to put their mind at ease and also say this is a journey.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_02]: You can do this.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_02]: There's nothing lacking in you.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_02]: It's just maybe something that you've not focused on as much as experts in the field.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_02]: And so just like I'm not a mechanic, I would need to learn more about that to get proficient and folks can.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_02]: And so I think that's part of it.
- 7:40[SPEAKER_02]: In the events we have, we kind of go through how you can gain confidence, things you can learn about communities that can come together, ways to let advisors and attorneys in your life know about your way of learning and let them know, you know what?
- 7:55[SPEAKER_02]: That fourth tab out on the spreadsheet, like my soul has left the building at this point, or maybe I do like this spreadsheet, or I don't, I like the pie chart.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_02]: So anyway, those are some ways.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_02]: And I think even just sharing
- 8:10[SPEAKER_02]: You know, to support that work and we share with others, look, that's confusing to me, too.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know what that word means.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_02]: It's interesting in an event, if we say, does anyone have any questions, silence?
- 8:22[SPEAKER_02]: But the first person who starts and then you just kind of see, see if hands go through.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_02]: And it's, I think, once one person is willing to be vulnerable, you just see that a lot.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that's one way that everyone can support that work.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I love your analogy about the car and automatic.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_01]: That's a perfect example, right?
- 8:43[SPEAKER_01]: Because we don't many of us don't have the knowledge that you have regarding finances.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_01]: So or cars.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_01]: So we're not trying to fix our car ourselves.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_01]: So why would we try and manage our finances ourselves?
- 8:57[SPEAKER_01]: Let's talk with the professionals and get the help.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
- 9:01[SPEAKER_02]: And we can't get better.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_02]: You know, we can start to get to where we have more expertise in this if you want to.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_02]: If you're not going to, you know, it's great to just know how to vet somebody who really can who to trust that would be key and that's in that circumstance.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely, you know, with the great wealth transfer accelerating, how do you see women's roles evolving in family office and in the financial advisory space?
- 9:28[SPEAKER_01]: And what advice do you have for women stepping into leadership roles?
- 9:32[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I mean, it's incredible the influence.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_02]: Because if you look at the statistics of how, I mean, it's kind of mind boggling, especially being the advantage that I am to see the change
- 9:45[SPEAKER_02]: of where wealth will be held.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_02]: And so back in the day, let's just say, you know, the statistics were well, you know, a lot of the household finances women are spending the money.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_02]: They're the ones who are making decisions about groceries and that this is a whole different paradigm.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_02]: This is go downtown, look at all the buildings up around you, the titles to those will be in the names of women.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, that's women will be deal makers, women will be holding
- 10:11[SPEAKER_02]: majority of wealth as we go forward and that's due to a lot of reasons.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_02]: Women coming into different kinds of employment and leadership women inheriting women becoming widowed and maybe remarried and widowed again in some cases inheriting for parents all kinds of things.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_02]: I'm seeing the difference in clients and client families and preparing women to be confident in those roles.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_02]: I think the confidence gap is one we've just got to get on that and make some positive change there.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_02]: And then women and leadership in financial management employment roles.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_02]: and leadership and ownership roles.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_02]: I think I see tremendous change and just the need for women to step into dealmaking ownership, leadership, all of that.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's so true.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_01]: You know, Valerie, what message or words have been encouragement?
- 11:06[SPEAKER_01]: Would you like to share with our listeners who aspire to make a positive difference in the world?
- 11:11[SPEAKER_01]: I just say go for it.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, be bold.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_02]: Be willing to make mistakes.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_02]: You know, some things that we might considering embarrassing, like, oh, I don't want to admit I don't know that or I'm just starting.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, just live boldly, right?
- 11:26[SPEAKER_02]: We only get to do this once.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_02]: I kind of had this joke around the office.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, well, I can either ask a stupid question and then stop being stupid or I can not ask a stupid question and remains stupid on the topic.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_02]: So, when I actually growing up, it was like, don't say the word stupid, it's mean, but you know what I'm saying.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_02]: It's just, you've gotta ask to change and grow.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_02]: And so get out there, be bold, poke the bear, just get into spaces you don't feel comfortable.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_02]: I know they talk about,
- 11:59[SPEAKER_02]: What is it imposter syndrome?
- 12:00[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, go ahead, be an imposter.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_02]: Everybody is.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_02]: Nobody is really, you know, all that and a bag of tricks, right?
- 12:07[SPEAKER_02]: Like what we're putting forward on social media, what people are putting forward all the time, that bold face is great, but everybody feels a little bit
- 12:16[SPEAKER_02]: like not perfect.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_02]: And even in the financial arena, I have never met a single individual that's like, hey, you know what, I'm nailing all of my personal finances, all of my investments.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_02]: I understand Wall Street.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_02]: I understand estate planning.
- 12:30[SPEAKER_02]: I've got all this down.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_02]: And I've been in this industry for decades in this area.
- 12:34[SPEAKER_02]: So everybody's working to get better.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_02]: So just know you're in good company and totally go for it.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_01]: I love it.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_01]: That's great advice.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think there's any stupid question out there.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_01]: The only stupid question is the one that's not asked.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_01]: So ask away.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
- 12:53[SPEAKER_01]: Valerie, thank you for sharing your journey and your wisdom with us today.
