- 0:22Speaker 2: Appreciate you.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Rich Sherman Podcast and another eventful
- 0:33Speaker 1: week in the off season. Jackson Smith and Jigba becomes
- 0:36Speaker 1: the highest paid receiver in the National Football League's illustrious
- 0:41Speaker 1: history at forty two point one five million dollars per year.
- 0:45Speaker 1: The Seahawks did a great job getting this deal done
- 0:48Speaker 1: early enough that it only looks like thirty two million
- 0:53Speaker 1: dollars a year if you do it over the lifetime
- 0:55Speaker 1: of the deal, which is an absolute bargain for a
- 0:58Speaker 1: receiver that just won Offensive Player of the Year is
- 1:01Speaker 1: only trending up, only going to continue to grow rapport
- 1:06Speaker 1: and relationship with Sam Darnold and continue to thrive. I
- 1:10Speaker 1: think this is this this receiving court and now it's
- 1:12Speaker 1: a well paid receiving court mental. But with Jackson Smith
- 1:16Speaker 1: and Jigbab forty two point one point five million a year,
- 1:19Speaker 1: you got Shaheed at seventeen a year. You got Cooper
- 1:21Speaker 1: Cup at fifteen million dollars a year, and then you
- 1:24Speaker 1: they matched Bobo's deal to bring him back.
- 1:29Speaker 2: They're gonna have to produce. That's that's for sure.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Now, you know it's it's it's always nice when uh,
- 1:36Speaker 1: you win and you do crazy things and you do
- 1:38Speaker 1: great things, and the expectations aren't there that there's not
- 1:42Speaker 1: a huge burden of expectation. But when you when you
- 1:46Speaker 1: get paid, when you get paid like Shaheed and like
- 1:49Speaker 1: Cooper Cup and like Jackson just got paid, now the
- 1:53Speaker 1: expectations and the criticisms that come with those expectations start
- 1:58Speaker 1: to ramp up. But I think they're ready for it.
- 2:01Speaker 1: I think they're they're pois to have another fantastic year.
- 2:04Speaker 1: They're not gonna surprise anybody this year. I'm not gonna
- 2:07Speaker 1: have to go to training camp and come back and
- 2:09Speaker 1: get on this podcast and say, hey, Mitchell, they look great,
- 2:13Speaker 1: because everybody knows what they look like. They just won
- 2:16Speaker 1: the Super Bowl. H this is a great deal for
- 2:18Speaker 1: the team. I think this this helps them long term.
- 2:21Speaker 1: I think they're gonna do the same thing with Devin Witherspoon. Uh,
- 2:26Speaker 1: I don't see any reason why they wouldn't get a
- 2:28Speaker 1: deal done there. But this is this is incredible, and
- 2:31Speaker 1: and Jackson seems to be ready to repeat. His energy's right,
- 2:35Speaker 1: his mindset's right, he's the right, He's built through the
- 2:38Speaker 1: right stuff. So I'm looking forward to to seeing them
- 2:41Speaker 1: thrive even more this season, uh with with the burden
- 2:44Speaker 1: of expectations they'll have on them after after last year.
- 2:49Speaker 1: You know about this same time last year, we're talking
- 2:53Speaker 1: about you know, them getting rid of gen O, them
- 2:57Speaker 1: trading DK Metcalf and all the things that happened that season.
- 3:01Speaker 1: If you would have told me a year later, we'd
- 3:04Speaker 1: be talking about the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks and
- 3:08Speaker 1: Jackson Smith and Jigbo coming off Offensive Player of the
- 3:10Speaker 1: Year season being named the highest paid player and receiver
- 3:14Speaker 1: in the National Football League, I would have called you crazy,
- 3:17Speaker 1: just because at that point he was the number you know,
- 3:20Speaker 1: two three receiver, he was mostly used in the slot,
- 3:25Speaker 1: just hadn't shown I mean, he'd shown ability obviously in college.
- 3:29Speaker 1: He had a three hundred yard game, but he hadn't
- 3:33Speaker 1: been given the opportunity to showcase his ability in the
- 3:35Speaker 1: way that he was this year. And you talk about
- 3:38Speaker 1: a guy just taking the bull by the horns, and
- 3:41Speaker 1: that's exactly what he did. Today's show is brought to
- 3:46Speaker 1: you by our presenting sponsor, hard Rock Bet Florida Sportsbook.
- 3:51Speaker 1: We talk a lot about football on this show, but
- 3:53Speaker 1: it's March, and you know that college basketball takes center stage.

- 4:54Speaker 1: and let's get the party started.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Richard, this is a big day for Jackson Smith and Jigba,
- 5:03Speaker 3: and he's one of those guys. Clearly he's all football.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Went asked, you know you won Offensive Player of the Year,
- 5:08Speaker 3: he won the Super Bowl. Now that he's the highest
- 5:10Speaker 3: paid wide receiver in the league, what are you gonna
- 5:12Speaker 3: do next? His response was one super Bowl? What's better
- 5:17Speaker 3: than one super Bowl two? So Richard Seattle is obviously
- 5:21Speaker 3: getting a pro here, a pros pro. He's well worth
- 5:25Speaker 3: the money. And I know the money on its face
- 5:27Speaker 3: seems like a lot, but the money on its face
- 5:29Speaker 3: seemed like a lot a few years ago.
- 5:32Speaker 2: I remember when the.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Lions resigned onmn ross Aint Brown and gave him thirty
- 5:35Speaker 3: million dollars a year, and all of a sudden, that
- 5:37Speaker 3: became the next threshold for receivers. Now that forty million
- 5:41Speaker 3: dollar mark is that next threshold. So the receivers getting
- 5:45Speaker 3: paid after him, pooka Nakula. You know, we'll see. I
- 5:49Speaker 3: don't know the other big names. I know George Pickens
- 5:51Speaker 3: just got franchise. I know he won't be in that
- 5:54Speaker 3: that tier, but I would expect some of these guys
- 5:56Speaker 3: to be making some eye popping numbers that make fans,
- 6:00Speaker 3: you know, wonder what the heck is going on. But
- 6:02Speaker 3: that's just the nature of the beast. As the cap
- 6:04Speaker 3: space goes up, these margins go up a lot higher
- 6:08Speaker 3: for these skill positions. But ultimately you alluded to it
- 6:12Speaker 3: throughout our offseason talk, Richard, and we were looking at,
- 6:15Speaker 3: you know, how Seattle was positioning themselves in free agency,
- 6:18Speaker 3: and obviously they let a little bit of their depth walk.
- 6:21Speaker 3: They let Kenneth Walker walk, they let Boie Mafi walk,
- 6:24Speaker 3: they let Kobe Bryant walk, et cetera. You know, all
- 6:29Speaker 3: for this reason because they got to pay the big
- 6:31Speaker 3: man in the room, and that's JSN. You know, Richard,
- 6:35Speaker 3: break it down for fans so they can better understand,
- 6:38Speaker 3: you know, the financial ramifications of offloading this much cap
- 6:42Speaker 3: space onto a team and what it does, the trickle
- 6:45Speaker 3: down effect that it has on the rest of the roster.
- 6:48Speaker 1: You know, some say it kills the middle class in
- 6:51Speaker 1: the National Football League, but I think John Snyder's doing
- 6:54Speaker 1: an incredible job. He did an incredible job of getting
- 6:56Speaker 1: this deal done. Early, so you know, I know, it's
- 6:59Speaker 1: highest pace in the history of the game. But then
- 7:01Speaker 1: you look at it over the next six years, it's
- 7:03Speaker 1: thirty two million dollars a year, which is a very
- 7:05Speaker 1: reasonable price for a receiver, and it's in line with
- 7:08Speaker 1: other receivers in the league. And you look at George
- 7:11Speaker 1: Pickens getting the franchise tag, I think, uh, he's gonna
- 7:15Speaker 1: be looking at thirty one thirty two million dollars a
- 7:17Speaker 1: year once he gets off of that. I think it's
- 7:20Speaker 1: gonna be fine. But this is the exact reason. You
- 7:23Speaker 1: can't keep a good player like Kobe Bryant, you can't
- 7:26Speaker 1: keep a Super Bowl MVP like Kenneth Walker. And you
- 7:30Speaker 1: got a draft, well, you got a draft. Well, you
- 7:32Speaker 1: gotta trust your depth. You gotta trust the guys you
- 7:35Speaker 1: signed in free agency that they can pick up the slack.
- 7:38Speaker 1: I know they feel good about Taya Kata in terms
- 7:41Speaker 1: of what he can do, and Kobe Bryants did. Obviously,
- 7:45Speaker 1: they have a lot of love and respect for Kobe Bryant,
- 7:47Speaker 1: and he's gonna be fantastic in Chicago. But that's why
- 7:52Speaker 1: you draft. Well, that's why you gotta trust your depth.
- 7:54Speaker 1: That's why you train the next guy. That's why it's
- 7:56Speaker 1: always next man up mentality, because when you have guys
- 7:59Speaker 1: playing at our all pro you know, offensive player of
- 8:03Speaker 1: the year type level, you're gonna have to pay him.
- 8:05Speaker 1: You're gonna have to pay Devin Witherspoon. And when you
- 8:07Speaker 1: pay Devin Witherspoon, then it means you're gonna expect more.
- 8:12Speaker 1: You're gonna have to lean on those guys more because
- 8:15Speaker 1: you're not able to pay everybody else as much.
- 8:18Speaker 2: So you know it.
- 8:19Speaker 1: That's why what happened to San Francisco. When you're paying
- 8:22Speaker 1: your best players, it's fine. But when you pay your
- 8:24Speaker 1: best players and the guy you're the guys you're playing
- 8:27Speaker 1: aren't on the field, then it's very difficult to win
- 8:29Speaker 1: the National Football League.
- 8:30Speaker 2: And so.
- 8:32Speaker 1: This is gonna work out fine. I think their window
- 8:35Speaker 1: is wide open. I think they have a great chance
- 8:37Speaker 1: to run it back. Mike McDonald's system works. I don't
- 8:42Speaker 1: think the NFL is caught up to it. Obviously, they're
- 8:46Speaker 1: still looking for answers. But when you when you have
- 8:48Speaker 1: a full all season to study a team and to
- 8:50Speaker 1: study a defense, they're gonna be looking for the few
- 8:54Speaker 1: weaknesses that they can expose and try to force him
- 8:57Speaker 1: to adjust. That's the part of being a great team
- 8:59Speaker 1: and being at the top of the mountain. That's a
- 9:02Speaker 1: little frustrating because everybody's studying you. Everybody's trying to figure
- 9:07Speaker 1: out how to beat you and create the next championship dynasty.
- 9:12Speaker 1: And can this team be a dynasty? I believe so.
- 9:15Speaker 1: I believe so because they have something. They have a
- 9:18Speaker 1: repeatable system. You know, it's not like anything they did
- 9:21Speaker 1: was incredibly difficult to replicate. You know, they ran the
- 9:27Speaker 1: ball well at times. Sam Darnold I think will be
- 9:31Speaker 1: better this year than he was last year. He had
- 9:34Speaker 1: twenty turnovers during the season, which was among the league leaders,
- 9:37Speaker 1: and then didn't turn the ball over once in a playoffs.
- 9:40Speaker 1: So again, if he plays at the level that he
- 9:42Speaker 1: played in the playoffs throughout the entire season, this is
- 9:45Speaker 1: a juggernaut of a team, A very difficult team, a
- 9:48Speaker 1: very difficult out for any team in the NFC or THEFC.
- 9:52Speaker 2: And you alluded to it too.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Another thing that this team really has is a really
- 9:58Speaker 3: game killer at general manager in John Schneider. Last offseason
- 10:03Speaker 3: he kind of stuck his neck on the line trading
- 10:05Speaker 3: DK Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Some folks kind of
- 10:09Speaker 3: looked and wondered, you know, what's the plan here? Obviously
- 10:11Speaker 3: getting rid of Geno. I mean, in hindsight, both of
- 10:14Speaker 3: those moves allowed them to make a move like this
- 10:16Speaker 3: and extending JSN because you know, DK Metcalf's another guy
- 10:21Speaker 3: making thirty three million dollars a year, so you free
- 10:23Speaker 3: up that cap space to be able to keep JSN
- 10:26Speaker 3: and it's an addition by subtraction kind of thing. You're
- 10:29Speaker 3: giving the JSN a lot more opportunity there and clearly
- 10:33Speaker 3: proved he was that guy. You know, is there anything
- 10:35Speaker 3: that you looked off of last offseason that should have
- 10:38Speaker 3: been done differently for John Schneider and the Seahawks or
- 10:40Speaker 3: do you think he just greade aa stick.
- 10:43Speaker 1: I mean, he's aced the last three years, four years.
- 10:46Speaker 1: That's why they're in a position they are because he's
- 10:49Speaker 1: drafted really well. They've made really shrewd trades that have
- 10:53Speaker 1: benefited them in a big way. They've taken care of
- 10:58Speaker 1: the positions that you got to take care of, which
- 10:59Speaker 1: you're which is offensive line and defensive line. You know,
- 11:03Speaker 1: it's not sexy to draft a guard in the first round,
- 11:06Speaker 1: but when you do, you solidify your offensive line in
- 11:09Speaker 1: an incredible way, and you solidify the culture of your
- 11:11Speaker 1: offensive line. And that's what they brought in with Grey's Abel.
- 11:14Speaker 1: I mean, you just hear how the guys in the
- 11:16Speaker 1: building talk about him and how he's changed things and
- 11:20Speaker 1: brought them together and certain things He's forced them to
- 11:24Speaker 1: hang out and be together because that's all he knows.
- 11:27Speaker 2: You know.
- 11:27Speaker 1: He's one of those old school cut offensive linemans that's like, hey,
- 11:30Speaker 1: we got to sit there and we got to drink
- 11:32Speaker 1: beer together, we got to hang out, we got to
- 11:33Speaker 1: be around each other. Hey, it's not a glamorous job,
- 11:37Speaker 1: but goddamn it, somebody gotta do it.
- 11:39Speaker 3: You gotta love to have those guys on the team, Richard.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Another low key move that this team made this week
- 11:44Speaker 3: is they re signed Jake Bobo. And I know Bobo
- 11:49Speaker 3: filled in and had a pretty decent role with this
- 11:52Speaker 3: team as a reserve wide receiver. He's certainly made a
- 11:55Speaker 3: name for himself in the preseason. How much do you
- 11:57Speaker 3: think the Seattle Seahawks like this guy? I mean, what
- 12:00Speaker 3: do you really think he brings to the team. I
- 12:02Speaker 3: know there was a lot of criticism, you know, with
- 12:04Speaker 3: this forty time and all that stuff, and he put
- 12:06Speaker 3: a lot of those fears to bed this past year.
- 12:09Speaker 3: But what do you think Jake Bobo and his resigning
- 12:11Speaker 3: needs to this team.
- 12:13Speaker 1: It means a ton, you know, in a lot of phases.
- 12:17Speaker 1: He does the dirty work. You know, he's just one
- 12:19Speaker 1: of those blue collar guys who brings his lunch bell
- 12:22Speaker 1: every day and goes to work. He's a guy that
- 12:24Speaker 1: makes an incredible impact on special teams. But at receiver,
- 12:29Speaker 1: he has plays, he has moments where where he's a
- 12:33Speaker 1: factor and he's not going to get you know, one
- 12:35Speaker 1: hundred targets or anything like that. But some guys are
- 12:38Speaker 1: for the culture, for the culture of the team, you know,
- 12:41Speaker 1: those are the guys, the nuts and bolts guys, And
- 12:44Speaker 1: he's one of those guys that are a glue guy
- 12:48Speaker 1: and really help hold this team together in critical moments
- 12:51Speaker 1: that you really don't notice until those moments come up
- 12:54Speaker 1: and you're like, oh, man, look at Bobo just scored
- 12:56Speaker 1: a touchdown in the playoffs, and you're like, you might
- 13:00Speaker 1: have he might have had fifteen catches the whole year,
- 13:03Speaker 1: and he scored a touchdown in the playoffs, And again,
- 13:05Speaker 1: he's reliable.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Where he needs to be.
- 13:08Speaker 1: There's no complaints and he's just a do shit right
- 13:11Speaker 1: guy and you need those Richard.
- 13:13Speaker 3: The one question we have coming up next, and the
- 13:16Speaker 3: big question for the Seattle Seahawks, is what to do
- 13:19Speaker 3: with Devan Wetherspoon. We just saw McDuffie get paid an
- 13:23Speaker 3: exorbitant amount of money by the LA RAMS after being
- 13:26Speaker 3: traded over from the Kansas City Chiefs, setting a new
- 13:29Speaker 3: market at corner after this JSN move, you know, what
- 13:33Speaker 3: do you do with Devin Wetherspoon? Do you re up him?
- 13:36Speaker 3: And what do you anticipate he makes? You know during
- 13:40Speaker 3: his extension? Is he another guy that you would set
- 13:43Speaker 3: the market with? Again, how would you handle the situation
- 13:45Speaker 3: if you're John Schneider.
- 13:47Speaker 1: I mean you would try not to set the market.
- 13:49Speaker 1: But again, if you get it done early enough, then
- 13:54Speaker 1: the years after the deal are the market seter So,
- 13:58Speaker 1: say he gets thirty one thirty million dollars a year
- 14:01Speaker 1: over the next four years, and they do it this
- 14:05Speaker 1: year again, when you have a couple of years left
- 14:08Speaker 1: on your deal, When you have a year or two
- 14:09Speaker 1: left on your deal, it makes a big difference. And
- 14:12Speaker 1: I think when you look at it over the lifetime
- 14:15Speaker 1: of the deal. It looks like a much more reasonable deal.
- 14:18Speaker 1: So again, I think he's going to get a deal,
- 14:20Speaker 1: a record setting deal, no question about it. I think
- 14:22Speaker 1: John Snyder is being very smart about how he does
- 14:25Speaker 1: these things and why he's doing it so early to
- 14:28Speaker 1: give him flexibility down the road and again allow him
- 14:32Speaker 1: to continue to draft well, continue to replenish the cupboard,
- 14:38Speaker 1: but also keep his guys happy, keep his best players happy.
- 14:40Speaker 3: Why do you think there's been a movement away from
- 14:43Speaker 3: teams like the Seattle Seahawks franchising players because you know
- 14:47Speaker 3: a lot of fans when you hear the talk, you know,
- 14:49Speaker 3: specifically in a running back market, like why wouldn't you
- 14:52Speaker 3: just franchise tag a guy like Kenneth Walker? What's why
- 14:56Speaker 3: is it that we're not seeing as many teams franchise
- 14:59Speaker 3: tag gu do you think?
- 15:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't really have a great answer for this,
- 15:04Speaker 1: because each team's philosophy is so different, But I think
- 15:09Speaker 1: the Seahawks just want more long term stability, and I
- 15:12Speaker 1: think that's the way John Snyder is thinking about things.
- 15:15Speaker 1: He's thinking about the long term future. I mean, in
- 15:17Speaker 1: one year, franchise tag, it puts more guaranteed money on
- 15:23Speaker 1: the books that you can't manipulate, you can't push forward,
- 15:26Speaker 1: you can't do anything like that. And they've done a
- 15:28Speaker 1: fantastic job. They they're the lowest team in dead money,
- 15:32Speaker 1: the lowest dead money team in the National Football League,
- 15:35Speaker 1: the lowest amount of dead money. And the reason is
- 15:38Speaker 1: because he's been incredibly shrewd in the way he's done contracts,
- 15:41Speaker 1: and I don't think he wants to be in a
- 15:43Speaker 1: situation where he can't have flexibility, even if it's just
- 15:46Speaker 1: for a year with the running back position, and to
- 15:49Speaker 1: pay a number that he's not comfortable with. Because if
- 15:52Speaker 1: you're even if you're paying top number, top dollar, if
- 15:55Speaker 1: you got voidable years, if you got structured the way
- 15:58Speaker 1: you structure it, you still have some flexibility. But in
- 16:01Speaker 1: a franchise tag, there's very little. A solid wardrobe really
- 16:05Speaker 1: comes down to a few pieces that actually work and
- 16:08Speaker 1: hold up. That's why I've been rocking with Quints lately.
- 16:12Speaker 3: Same Richards, you must be reading my mind. Quint's is
- 16:15Speaker 3: all about those every day essentials, but done right, like
- 16:19Speaker 3: lightweight cashmere sweaters, short sleeve Mongolian cashmere polos. How about
- 16:24Speaker 3: some linen shorts and teas? In one hundred percent Pema cott.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Yeah, it's the kind of stuff you mix, match and
- 16:30Speaker 1: whar year round without overthinking it.
- 16:33Speaker 2: And the quality is real.
- 16:34Speaker 3: They use one hundred percent Mongolian cashmere, the same as
- 16:38Speaker 3: luxury brands. Their Pema cotton is long stable, so it's
- 16:42Speaker 3: s ASoft all the time. Even their European linen is
- 16:45Speaker 3: breathable and lightweight.
- 16:47Speaker 1: The difference is they cut out the middleman, no crazy
- 16:51Speaker 1: retail markup, no fancy storefront costs, just quality clothes at
- 16:56Speaker 1: a price that actually makes sense.
- 16:58Speaker 3: And people there cut They back it up thousands of
- 17:02Speaker 3: reviews Richard like four point five to five stars across
- 17:06Speaker 3: the board. Plus they only work with factories that meet
- 17:09Speaker 3: serious standards for craftsmanship and ethical production.
- 17:13Speaker 1: Man, those linen shorts have become my go to. They
- 17:16Speaker 1: don't wrinkle like cheap lind and they pretty much go
- 17:19Speaker 1: with everything.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Plus they don't cost a fortune.

- 18:08Speaker 3: For sure, we got to take a little detour from
- 18:11Speaker 3: football talk and we're gonna talk a little bit about you,
- 18:14Speaker 3: because for all of our listeners out there, I don't
- 18:16Speaker 3: know if you've heard my guy right here, Richard Sherman
- 18:19Speaker 3: was just nominated for an Emmy. Emerging on Air Talent
- 18:24Speaker 3: Richard Sherman Emmy nominee. You know, Richard, talk a little
- 18:30Speaker 3: bit about how much it means to you to be
- 18:33Speaker 3: nominated for something like this for the Emmy. Obviously, you
- 18:35Speaker 3: were a hell of a football player. You began working
- 18:39Speaker 3: in the media shortly after retirement and you've been kicking ass.
- 18:43Speaker 3: What does it mean to you to be named as
- 18:44Speaker 3: a nominee for an Emmy at this stage, this early
- 18:47Speaker 3: on in your media career.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Well, it's incredibly humbling and it means a ton, but
- 18:54Speaker 1: it's just a testament to the product and the team
- 18:57Speaker 1: we have at Thursday Night Football. It's such a joy
- 19:00Speaker 1: to come to work every day, to work with Chris,
- 19:03Speaker 1: Tony Fitz, with Taylor, you know, the the entire staff.
- 19:10Speaker 1: There's so many incredible people behind the scenes putting in
- 19:13Speaker 1: work making sure we're in the position of Mina Spoon Kaiser,
- 19:17Speaker 1: you know that, the higher ups, the execs, Jay Marine
- 19:20Speaker 1: and and uh, you know, it's just so many people
- 19:23Speaker 1: on these teams that do a phenomenal job, Mariano of
- 19:27Speaker 1: making sure that we have an incredible product where we're prepared,
- 19:31Speaker 1: everything is running, everything's worth it's supposed to be. Uh
- 19:34Speaker 1: my guy bk making sure you know, whether it's the
- 19:38Speaker 1: graphics are are making sure you know they're they're they're
- 19:43Speaker 1: switching to the right channel, or they're switching to the
- 19:45Speaker 1: right scene or the next camera, et cetera, et cetera,
- 19:47Speaker 1: and uh, it's you know, Chris is obviously the glue
- 19:50Speaker 1: that holds everything together. So I'm just grateful to be
- 19:53Speaker 1: a part of such an amazing team and and to
- 19:55Speaker 1: be nominated for an Emmy.
- 19:57Speaker 2: Is is a really cool deal.
- 19:59Speaker 1: But it's just more attestament to the entire product that
- 20:02Speaker 1: we get to put out there every week and it's
- 20:03Speaker 1: a joy to do it.
- 20:04Speaker 3: Well, I'm excited to see you win it. Like I said,
- 20:07Speaker 3: you have my vote, Rich, you got my vote. Let's
- 20:10Speaker 3: talk a little bit matter, yes, sir, Let's talk a
- 20:13Speaker 3: little bit about these San Francisco forty nine ers. You know,
- 20:15Speaker 3: the big news in San Francisco right now is what's
- 20:18Speaker 3: going on with Trent Williams. And obviously he's entering the
- 20:21Speaker 3: last year his contract. He's got a huge cap hit.
- 20:25Speaker 3: The forty nine Ers declined his ten million dollar option,
- 20:28Speaker 3: which basically moves that ten million dollars into his current
- 20:31Speaker 3: base salary. You know, the option was in there to
- 20:35Speaker 3: give him some flexibility if they wanted to extend that
- 20:38Speaker 3: out for three more void years. So they're choosing to
- 20:41Speaker 3: take the cap hit all up front this year. What
- 20:43Speaker 3: do you what do you make of the strategy here?
- 20:46Speaker 3: What do you think John Lynchin is positioning himself in
- 20:49Speaker 3: this team.
- 20:50Speaker 1: For to be to continue to be a very competitive
- 20:55Speaker 1: football team. I think they've gotten frustrated, not with Trent Williams.
- 20:59Speaker 1: But just with the dead money situation that they've run
- 21:02Speaker 1: into year after year after year. I think they've been,
- 21:06Speaker 1: you know, amongst the top dead money teams for the
- 21:09Speaker 1: last few years because of Javon Hargraves contract, Deebo, Samuel,
- 21:13Speaker 1: you know, so many guys that they've had to part
- 21:16Speaker 1: ways with for for whatever reason.
- 21:20Speaker 2: But they're trying to get away from that.
- 21:22Speaker 1: So I don't think they want to to to throw
- 21:25Speaker 1: more dead money into the future. I think they're trying
- 21:28Speaker 1: to to take their licks now. I don't think. But
- 21:33Speaker 1: again I haven't talked to John or Kyle, but I
- 21:36Speaker 1: don't I obviously don't see them getting rid of Trent Williams.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Trent feels like he has a tremendous amount of leverage. Obviously,
- 21:43Speaker 1: the longer these negotiations go on, the less leverage I
- 21:47Speaker 1: think Trent has because teams are gonna spend the money.
- 21:50Speaker 1: They're gonna spend the money, they're gonna get pay guys,
- 21:52Speaker 1: they're gonna start to playing for next year. They're gonna
- 21:55Speaker 1: start to think, hey, this situation is done and teams
- 21:58Speaker 1: can't just create thirty million dollars in cap out of nowhere,
- 22:02Speaker 1: you know, some teams can, but the contenders usually have
- 22:06Speaker 1: a tight cap situation. So, you know, I think this
- 22:11Speaker 1: situation is going to get rectified. But obviously it's it's
- 22:15Speaker 1: been a bit of a distractionist offseason. But both sides
- 22:18Speaker 1: want to be here. Both sides want to want Trent
- 22:20Speaker 1: Williams in San Francisco, and that's something I believe and
- 22:24Speaker 1: I think that's what's gonna ultimately happen.
- 22:26Speaker 3: Well, this is not the same situation from last year
- 22:29Speaker 3: with Brandon Ayuk. I think Trent Williams, like you said,
- 22:31Speaker 3: really wants to be there. The reality is he is
- 22:34Speaker 3: getting up there in age. You know, his career is
- 22:36Speaker 3: probably coming to a close here in the next few years.
- 22:38Speaker 3: I'm sure he wants to make as much money as possible,
- 22:41Speaker 3: and I'm sure that forty nine ers want him at
- 22:44Speaker 3: left tackle for.
- 22:45Speaker 2: The foreseeable future here.
- 22:47Speaker 3: Richard, we got to talk a little flag football over
- 22:50Speaker 3: the weekend and you kind of talked about I don't
- 22:53Speaker 3: know how much we've actually talked about it on this podcast,
- 22:55Speaker 3: but you and I have talked about it separately, and
- 22:57Speaker 3: I remember asking you, I said, you, I mean, I
- 23:00Speaker 3: feel like NFL players would go and just demolished Team USA,
- 23:04Speaker 3: And you said, I don't know if that's the case,
- 23:06Speaker 3: because there's a lot of different rules at play, and
- 23:09Speaker 3: clearly we saw that all play out in real time.
- 23:12Speaker 3: You saw these guys doing like wrestling knee crawl moves,
- 23:15Speaker 3: avoiding defenders and just doing these fake spin moves and
- 23:20Speaker 3: just all over the place. And yet we've got former
- 23:23Speaker 3: and current NFL players that are just getting diced up
- 23:26Speaker 3: by these guys. Maybe Team USA and Team USA flag
- 23:30Speaker 3: football has made us all believers. Now, do you think
- 23:33Speaker 3: there's any situation where if the NFL stars were to
- 23:36Speaker 3: truly give it there all in practice by NFL or
- 23:40Speaker 3: by the flag football rules, and you learn the strategy,
- 23:43Speaker 3: do you think you know, given a little bit of time,
- 23:45Speaker 3: they might be able to put up a better fight
- 23:47Speaker 3: here or what?
- 23:48Speaker 1: No question about it, but this man, it's exactly what
- 23:53Speaker 1: I thought would happen. I thought I thought it would
- 23:55Speaker 1: be worse than what it was because it's such a
- 23:58Speaker 1: different game, and for them to put actual linebackers out
- 24:01Speaker 1: there was insane. I mean, you don't put linebackers have
- 24:04Speaker 1: no business in flag football. Their their entire build is
- 24:08Speaker 1: to stop runs and be physical, and that has no
- 24:10Speaker 1: place in flag football. So your middle linebackers is gonna
- 24:14Speaker 1: be like a nickel. It's gonna be like a nickel.
- 24:17Speaker 1: He's quick, agile, you know, maybe a taller nickel. Maybe
- 24:20Speaker 1: you get to my like Kyle Hamilton, who can be
- 24:22Speaker 1: good in space. But there's no place for bigger guys
- 24:26Speaker 1: and even the superstar guys that you're looking for. You know,
- 24:30Speaker 1: Jamier Gibbs would be great. I think K nine would
- 24:32Speaker 1: be great in flag football. I think I think Tyreek
- 24:36Speaker 1: Keel would be fantastic. Not it wouldn't necessarily be the
- 24:40Speaker 1: guys that make the best NFL players to play football
- 24:44Speaker 1: flag football. You know, it's sometimes it'd be the guy
- 24:47Speaker 1: who is the guy who is an offseason like, you know,
- 24:51Speaker 1: T shirt warrior, you know, the T shirt and shorts,
- 24:55Speaker 1: you know, superstar. Those would make great flag football players.
- 24:58Speaker 1: They don't always translate into the best physical football players.
- 25:02Speaker 1: But it's also a different game and you and you
- 25:05Speaker 1: you got to respect the guys that that play that
- 25:08Speaker 1: game and the way they play that game. And some
- 25:11Speaker 1: people would ask me before they were like, oh, well man,
- 25:13Speaker 1: they're gonna NFL is gonna send the team to the Olympics.
- 25:16Speaker 1: I said, I don't see very many NFL players being
- 25:19Speaker 1: on the roster at all. Now again, jamiir gives K nine.
- 25:24Speaker 1: You know, guys that are dynamic in short area quickness
- 25:27Speaker 1: and some of these scat little small, jitterbug receivers. Sure,
- 25:31Speaker 1: I think McDuffie would do well in this sense, you know,
- 25:34Speaker 1: But do I do I think every corner, every elite
- 25:37Speaker 1: corner that we have, would do well in this in
- 25:39Speaker 1: this game. No, I don't, because again, taking flags isn't
- 25:43Speaker 1: the same as tackling. You can track somebody down to
- 25:46Speaker 1: tackle them. You can, you can square them up, you
- 25:48Speaker 1: can read their body, and you can get yourself in
- 25:49Speaker 1: a position to bring them down. But the way they're
- 25:52Speaker 1: able to manipulate their body and lower their flags and
- 25:55Speaker 1: change the angles of their flags isn't something that NFL
- 25:59Speaker 1: players are used to. I mean, I saw Patrick Peterson
- 26:03Speaker 1: going against I show speed and he tracked him. Well,
- 26:07Speaker 1: you know, in football, it would have been a great tackle.
- 26:08Speaker 1: You would put his shoulder on him, he would have
- 26:10Speaker 1: been to the ground, but he spun away from him
- 26:12Speaker 1: because you gotta grab his flags at the end of
- 26:15Speaker 1: the day. And and that's something that takes practice and
- 26:19Speaker 1: it's not one of those things that's that comes easier,
- 26:21Speaker 1: comes naturally to guys. So yeah, it's it's it's a
- 26:25Speaker 1: different coverage, the field smaller. You know that the game
- 26:29Speaker 1: is so much different for quarterbacks. Everybody's like, oh, these
- 26:31Speaker 1: quarterbacks are putting on a bad showing, and that's it's
- 26:34Speaker 1: a different game. It's a different game. They're reading it
- 26:37Speaker 1: like these are the coverages they're used to seeing, but
- 26:39Speaker 1: it's not. It's not the coverages you're used to seeing,
- 26:41Speaker 1: and it's not the guys playing the positions that you're
- 26:43Speaker 1: used to playing. So I think with more practice and
- 26:47Speaker 1: and and changing the guys, you know, you're not going
- 26:50Speaker 1: with your your the superstars that you're used to.
- 26:52Speaker 2: You're going with.
- 26:53Speaker 1: The the guys who can who can move in space,
- 26:58Speaker 1: who can cover in space, or quick, who have great
- 27:01Speaker 1: hand eye coordination. Lamar Jackson would be fantastic in this league.
- 27:05Speaker 1: You know, you got to have a mobile quarterback. You
- 27:06Speaker 1: know you can't.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Joe Burrow is a fantastic quarterback.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Tom Brady's a fantastic quarterback, but in plag you need
- 27:12Speaker 1: a mobile guy who might be able to fling it
- 27:14Speaker 1: just enough.
- 27:15Speaker 3: I'm gonna throw a random name out there. Who I
- 27:17Speaker 3: think would be an All star in flight football. Cavante Turpin.
- 27:21Speaker 3: You know the Dallas Cowboys speeds, Yes, short, agile, quick,
- 27:26Speaker 3: Rashid Shaheed, your guy up in Seattle. Guys like that
- 27:31Speaker 3: that bring that element of quickness and speed to the game.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Look Out.
- 27:35Speaker 3: What will you just explained, Richard, is what in the
- 27:37Speaker 3: fighting community the difference between MMA and boxing, right? I mean,
- 27:41Speaker 3: you see all these MMA fighters try to fight in
- 27:43Speaker 3: boxing and it's a totally different sport. I think we
- 27:46Speaker 3: witnessed it this past weekend. Flag football is a lot
- 27:49Speaker 3: different than tackle football. But given time, I'm sure the
- 27:53Speaker 3: NFL stars could figure it out. But we did see
- 27:55Speaker 3: Odell Beckham Junior make a big catch in that game.
- 27:58Speaker 3: You know, he's still not on a team. What what
- 28:00Speaker 3: gives with him? Do you think he'll get an opportunity
- 28:02Speaker 3: this year?
- 28:05Speaker 1: You know, I'm hearing that their speculation out there that
- 28:08Speaker 1: teams are more interested because they's shown. I mean, he
- 28:11Speaker 1: can play, he can catch the ball at a high level.
- 28:15Speaker 1: A lot of the issues for him recently have just
- 28:17Speaker 1: been health. Can he get on the field, can he
- 28:19Speaker 1: stay on the field. When he's on the field, he
- 28:22Speaker 1: can play, He can catch the ball. What is his role?
- 28:26Speaker 1: Can he fit that role? Can he can he thrive
- 28:28Speaker 1: in a different role? You know, he's been a superstar
- 28:30Speaker 1: for so long. Can he thrive in a secondary role?
- 28:34Speaker 1: We'll see. But again, he's a guy who can play
- 28:38Speaker 1: the game. You you talk about DeAndre Hopkins, you know
- 28:40Speaker 1: another guy who can just play the game. They just
- 28:42Speaker 1: they're just football players. And if you put him out
- 28:44Speaker 1: there and you throwing the ball, they're going to make
- 28:46Speaker 1: some plays. Are they what they used to be in
- 28:48Speaker 1: their prime? No other time waits for no man.
- 28:51Speaker 2: But are they quality football players still? Yeah? I think so,
- 28:55Speaker 2: and I think they can have a role.
- 28:57Speaker 3: Well, we shall see. There's a lot of veterans that
- 28:59Speaker 3: are still like to be assigned here in free agencies.
- 29:02Speaker 3: And we've still got a lot of time left, you know,
- 29:05Speaker 3: obviously on the horizons the draft, Richard, We're gonna have
- 29:09Speaker 3: a lot more to talk about leading up to the draft.
- 29:11Speaker 3: It's always a pleasure sitting down with you again. Congrats
- 29:15Speaker 3: on your Emmy nomination, well deserved. I will let you
- 29:18Speaker 3: sign us off, my friend.
- 29:20Speaker 1: Thank you, Mitchell. I appreciate that. As always, you guys
- 29:23Speaker 1: can be anywhere in the world. But you're here with
- 29:25Speaker 1: us and we sincerely appreciate it. Thank you so much.
- 29:28Speaker 1: Hope your off season's going well. Hope your spring's going well.
- 29:31Speaker 1: I hope you have a great Easter in a couple
- 29:33Speaker 1: of weeks. All love, We'll see you next time.
