- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, guys, welcome to another episode of Eating While Broke.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I'm your host, Colleen Wit and today we have a
- 0:06Speaker 1: very special guest and personal friend of mine, nickel Fields,
- 0:09Speaker 1: artist writer, producer uh is in the building. And this
- 0:14Speaker 1: is a very special full circle moment. A lot of
- 0:18Speaker 1: people when they hear artists, writer, producer, you think of, hey,
- 0:21Speaker 1: someone that you're seeing in your face all the time.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Nick has worn a lot of hats where I feel
- 0:28Speaker 1: like this is gonna be a very educational moment in
- 0:30Speaker 1: regards to like getting music placement, writing on albums, and
- 0:35Speaker 1: what the what the hard lessons can be learned when
- 0:37Speaker 1: you are writing on albums. So this is this is
- 0:40Speaker 1: a really this this will probably be a very entertaining interview,
- 0:45Speaker 1: but I just wanted to highlight all of that prior
- 0:49Speaker 1: to us even starting. I'm trying to like navigate because
- 0:51Speaker 1: he's had to. You've had to navigate some pretty tough
- 0:55Speaker 1: waters being in this industry for as long as you have, so.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Yeah, there's been some roadblocks and noodles. So throw myself
- 1:02Speaker 2: off a bridge.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Moments, Yeah, definitely, Yeah, for sure. So what are you
- 1:06Speaker 1: gonna have me eating today?
- 1:08Speaker 2: Today? I'm just going to do quick, simple little rice
- 1:10Speaker 2: and beans, rice and beans and like not like homemade
- 1:15Speaker 2: rice rice like out the package rice and beans that
- 1:21Speaker 2: I lived off for about two months.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Two months every day, three day.
- 1:25Speaker 2: You might have you might have got some tuna fish
- 1:27Speaker 2: in there next to it. Here and there, you know,
- 1:30Speaker 2: some chicken if it was a good week.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Oh my god, I've been making jokes that Nick's dish
- 1:47Speaker 1: is going to be the worst one. No, it's actually
- 1:51Speaker 1: a compliment to you. It's the brokeus dish. But then again,
- 1:54Speaker 1: it's actually not the brokeused dish now I think about it,
- 1:57Speaker 1: because I may have been the Brokeus for today, but
- 2:01Speaker 1: I don't know what would you make humus.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Garbanzo beans can get expensive.
- 2:08Speaker 1: So all right, well let's get into you cook it
- 2:14Speaker 1: for me, So go ahead, start the rice and beans.
- 2:19Speaker 2: We're gonna get it going. So you got some red
- 2:23Speaker 2: hot later the sassoon. I'm from New York, so you know,
- 2:26Speaker 2: upstate New York, Rochester. So I grew up with a
- 2:28Speaker 2: lot of Portugan Miinnicans. And this is one thing except
- 2:30Speaker 2: for they make home made seasons. I'm gonna go. I
- 2:34Speaker 2: gotta figure it out as I can.
- 2:36Speaker 1: So you got so you're gonna do rice beans hot sauce.
- 2:41Speaker 1: And what did you say that was?
- 2:43Speaker 2: That's it? Yes?
- 2:46Speaker 1: Seasoning, seasoning, all right, yeah, so take me back to
- 2:51Speaker 1: what was going on in the air of it is
- 2:55Speaker 1: red beans and rice, right, red beans, red beans and beans.
- 3:01Speaker 1: I called them red beans, right, those are red though, right.
- 3:04Speaker 1: M every time I hear you say pencil, I think
- 3:06Speaker 1: of white beans, red beans, and.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Rice guysy beans. Okay, I know all the beans. So
- 3:15Speaker 2: this is just gonna dump that in there, and we're
- 3:17Speaker 2: just gonna let that rot. Ain't much really, you gotta
- 3:20Speaker 2: do little olive oil. Actually, I don't even need that.
- 3:24Speaker 2: I'm glad you had some olive oil because I ain't
- 3:26Speaker 2: have enough. Okay, yeah, I ain't even have no money
- 3:28Speaker 2: for oil. Sticky.
- 3:30Speaker 1: I've never actually put rice, I mean oil in my rice.
- 3:34Speaker 2: I mean, I'm just ready to do it. I don't know.
- 3:38Speaker 1: I'm gonna we're gonna find out together. You know, we're
- 3:42Speaker 1: gonna find out together. Now, I'm gonna I may add
- 3:44Speaker 1: olive oil to my rice.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Moving forward, listen the directions on the package. Oh, just
- 3:49Speaker 2: put some olive oil or some butter in it, so
- 3:51Speaker 2: you know, okay, Sometimes I follow directions, not very often
- 3:54Speaker 2: but occasionally.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Okay, So take me back to what's going on during
- 3:58Speaker 1: the time of two months of living on This.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Wasn't long after I moved to LA. So moved to
- 4:07Speaker 2: LA with some friends and kind of came out had
- 4:13Speaker 2: a little bit of money saved up from doing some
- 4:15Speaker 2: shit I shouldn't have been doing.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Like what, selling drugs.
- 4:18Speaker 2: I mean, it's over ten years. Good, good, it's over
- 4:23Speaker 2: ten years.
- 4:24Speaker 1: And I would say people on eating while broke, we're
- 4:27Speaker 1: a drug.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Dealer under yeah, so you know, I uh, you know,
- 4:34Speaker 2: and coming out here and anybody knows that's ever hustled
- 4:37Speaker 2: drugs and shit like that. It's fast money, easy come easy. Gough,
- 4:40Speaker 2: not really easy because of what you're risking to get it,
- 4:42Speaker 2: depending what you're selling. But yeah, easy come easy. Go
- 4:46Speaker 2: get these beans over here and here real quick. So
- 4:49Speaker 2: a lot of times I used to drain the juice.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Now I just keep it a little extra protein because
- 4:55Speaker 2: when you're broke, you eat all of protein you can get.
- 4:57Speaker 1: You're hilarious, right, yeah, you know what I'm saying. So,
- 5:00Speaker 1: so continue with your story. What's going on in this era?
- 5:04Speaker 2: So moved out here, had a little bit of bread,
- 5:06Speaker 2: and you know, you get caught up in the allure
- 5:08Speaker 2: as that everybody does. So and a friend of mine
- 5:10Speaker 2: I moved out here with at the time had been
- 5:13Speaker 2: doing really well. So first, you know, I came out
- 5:17Speaker 2: without the plans of work. I was currently signed to
- 5:20Speaker 2: BMG as a songwriter at the time as well. Ran
- 5:24Speaker 2: blew through my budget or not my budget, but my
- 5:27Speaker 2: advance didn't last long.
- 5:29Speaker 1: And that sucks because the advance had to be recooped.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Right, Yes, supposed to be supposed to hilarious, Yes, it's
- 5:37Speaker 2: supposed to be recouped.
- 5:38Speaker 1: So you ran through the advance.
- 5:40Speaker 2: I yeah, I like, I actually ran through most of
- 5:42Speaker 2: the advances before I even moved out here, because I
- 5:44Speaker 2: was living in New York City prior to between there
- 5:47Speaker 2: in Rochester, had a radio show at Upstate New York,
- 5:50Speaker 2: and then I also was working in the studios. There
- 5:53Speaker 2: was a point where literally squatting in BMG's old offices
- 5:56Speaker 2: at Midtown.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Oh wow, literally did they know that?
- 6:00Speaker 2: Well, they had moved their offices out of the facility
- 6:04Speaker 2: and the building was still I guess they still had
- 6:07Speaker 2: We still had access codes to the building for like
- 6:10Speaker 2: three months. So there was a bunch of us that
- 6:13Speaker 2: were a bunch of us. I don't let me not
- 6:16Speaker 2: say a bunch, but yes, quite a few of us
- 6:18Speaker 2: that were like signed in all hustling, trying to get
- 6:20Speaker 2: it because you know what it is.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what I was about to say.
- 6:22Speaker 2: It like glamer and glitz. From the outside, everybody's like, oh,
- 6:24Speaker 2: here's my big chain. I made it, But you don't.
- 6:26Speaker 2: You don't see the ship you had to go through
- 6:29Speaker 2: for you know, ten years of overnight success.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Yeah, it's crazy to think that an artist signed to
- 6:36Speaker 1: BMG would be like squatting in the BMG offices and
- 6:42Speaker 1: then they here more than one. Do you think that
- 6:45Speaker 1: was a bad business or just a bad business on
- 6:48Speaker 1: their part or bad business on you guys mishandling your
- 6:51Speaker 1: own money.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Uh So it's a combination of both in my opinion.
- 6:56Speaker 2: So it's like, I mean, the industry is the industry.
- 6:59Speaker 2: It's it's an entertainment industry. In my opinion, it's very
- 7:02Speaker 2: feast or famine. Either you're fucking scraping to get by
- 7:06Speaker 2: to get your moment or you're getting it. There isn't
- 7:10Speaker 2: and maybe after you get it, like you really crack
- 7:13Speaker 2: something good, then.
- 7:14Speaker 1: It comes stay with me if you mean stirring a
- 7:16Speaker 1: pot comes stay with me.
- 7:18Speaker 2: This is it.
- 7:19Speaker 1: I don't know if we explain to you, but when
- 7:21Speaker 1: you sit down with me, you're gonna have to talk
- 7:23Speaker 1: closer into these mics.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Oh I'm losing my radio. I saw my lapel mic on.
- 7:29Speaker 1: My Let me tell you something. Nothing I heart hates
- 7:33Speaker 1: more than a lapel mic.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Oh all right, well, I gat by the way.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Thank you. They always they you know me and eyebrows.
- 7:42Speaker 1: God bless me with some great ones. But but yeah,
- 7:45Speaker 1: just try to get as close as possible. So tell me.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Mm hmm, So tell me so prior to you. Now
- 7:52Speaker 1: that I know that this dish originated from the BMG deal,
- 7:57Speaker 1: I definitely am gonna have to go backwards. So tell
- 8:00Speaker 1: me how you got your deal.
- 8:03Speaker 2: So I ended up signing with Billy Mann after somebody
- 8:09Speaker 2: else originally from Rochester as well, that knew me from
- 8:13Speaker 2: the music scene up there, passed the story and some
- 8:16Speaker 2: demos along to him after I had written lighters.
- 8:23Speaker 1: We didn't explain this. This is your camera, that's mine.
- 8:25Speaker 1: So still so you looking at me, but you kind
- 8:28Speaker 1: of all got you go ahead. Sorry.
- 8:32Speaker 2: So I ended up at BMG after the story traveled
- 8:38Speaker 2: through a friend of mine to Billy Mann about and
- 8:43Speaker 2: then some demos went through for the song Lighters I
- 8:46Speaker 2: mean and Bruno Mars Royce nine. So that was originally
- 8:50Speaker 2: the original version of that is a demo that I
- 8:52Speaker 2: wrote with a producer in upstate New York. It was
- 8:56Speaker 2: originally a record for myself and then ended up making
- 9:00Speaker 2: its way to their team and becoming a pretty big record.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Yeah, it became a pretty big record.
- 9:09Speaker 1: But they got ahold of you, you approved it, you
- 9:11Speaker 1: cleared it.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Oh, man, I would love it if that's the way
- 9:14Speaker 2: it went.
- 9:14Speaker 1: So tell us what happened.
- 9:16Speaker 2: So the producer, after we had an agreement in place,
- 9:21Speaker 2: basically a couple of days later, it was like, yoah,
- 9:25Speaker 2: I want seventeen grand for this song, and I'm like,
- 9:27Speaker 2: what are you talking about? Created it together type shit?
- 9:30Speaker 2: And I'm like, well, that wasn't the agreement we had.
- 9:33Speaker 2: And in my head I'm like, oh, he must have
- 9:35Speaker 2: somebody interested in this thing. Sure enough he did. At
- 9:38Speaker 2: the time we thought it was I thought it was
- 9:39Speaker 2: Drake by the way he was saying.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Some certain things and what year is this?
- 9:43Speaker 2: Two thousand?
- 9:46Speaker 1: So Drake was out wait, it was pretty new Yeah,
- 9:49Speaker 1: Drake was very new.
- 9:50Speaker 2: It was pretty new.
- 9:51Speaker 1: It was before his mixtape drop.
- 9:53Speaker 2: No. No, it was after No Drake, Drake Scott Drag Scott.
- 9:56Speaker 1: But I'm saying, what didn't he drop in like two
- 9:59Speaker 1: thousand and eight.
- 10:02Speaker 2: But that's what I'm saying. Clarity, Okay, this was two
- 10:05Speaker 2: thousand so well, yeah, it was like because he was
- 10:09Speaker 2: you know, he was alluding to something about Toronto blah
- 10:11Speaker 2: blah blah whatever whatnot, so long and short in that sense. Uh,
- 10:17Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, dope, this you know, this could be dope,
- 10:19Speaker 2: not really much to talk about. I'm pretty green in
- 10:22Speaker 2: the sense of still learning a lot of the business,
- 10:25Speaker 2: like I didn't. Everything I've learned is from trial and error.
- 10:28Speaker 1: So but he tries to sell you what his half
- 10:30Speaker 1: or what was he trying to sell you?
- 10:32Speaker 2: No, No, he was he just wanted because he had
- 10:35Speaker 2: worked on this comes up later. He had worked on, uh,
- 10:39Speaker 2: making the band and all that sort of stuff. So
- 10:42Speaker 2: what was the group the boy band that Quanto is
- 10:45Speaker 2: in because Quanto is also from Rochester Q but this
- 10:49Speaker 2: producer worked.
- 10:50Speaker 1: On, yeah, making that stuff, making the band and.
- 10:52Speaker 2: All that stuff, and that was kind of like the
- 10:56Speaker 2: end of the conversation between he and I until and
- 11:00Speaker 2: so what say, six months later, I just found out
- 11:04Speaker 2: about some new family recently around that time that was
- 11:08Speaker 2: out in California, and I was out, don't you worry
- 11:10Speaker 2: about my.
- 11:14Speaker 1: I'm just all right gone.
- 11:18Speaker 2: I was out in l a visit planning a trip, planning,
- 11:23Speaker 2: like because I was looking into moving out here after
- 11:24Speaker 2: meeting some newfound family. And I heard the song on
- 11:29Speaker 2: the radio, your song song I was a part of.
- 11:33Speaker 2: I heard it on the radio first time I ever heard.
- 11:35Speaker 1: It in La or in Los Angeles. Oh my gosh,
- 11:37Speaker 1: And who was who was it? It was this.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Eminem Bruno Mars Royce to five nine and it was
- 11:44Speaker 2: like right around the time Bruno Mars had airplanes and
- 11:46Speaker 2: all that.
- 11:48Speaker 1: I definitely want to know what that feeling was like
- 11:52Speaker 1: of joy slash.
- 11:54Speaker 2: I immediately text the producer was like, oh shit, congrats
- 11:57Speaker 2: we got one. Oh well thanks was the response. So
- 12:02Speaker 2: in my head, I'm like, oh, like get a check.
- 12:05Speaker 2: You know that sort of thing never happened. Yeah, So
- 12:11Speaker 2: basically discredited everything anything I had to do with the record,
- 12:14Speaker 2: sold the record off, everything was already done by the
- 12:17Speaker 2: time I heard the record, so I had no parts
- 12:20Speaker 2: in it. I didn't understand then, because, like I said,
- 12:22Speaker 2: I was still learning a lot of the business how to.
- 12:26Speaker 2: I didn't realize then at the time I could, I
- 12:30Speaker 2: didn't have the song registered with a pro which c
- 12:32Speaker 2: sack b a my ra ascap at that time. I
- 12:36Speaker 2: didn't realize once something like that happens, you have two
- 12:38Speaker 2: years Somewhere in that show, I.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Was about to ask you, like, we can't go after
- 12:42Speaker 1: them now?
- 12:42Speaker 2: Yah, oh, listen, I've There's been many of conversations, especially
- 12:45Speaker 2: because it you know, it reappeared on his great as hits,
- 12:48Speaker 2: like this song has been Like at this point in time,
- 12:51Speaker 2: I probably owed like one point two two point three
- 12:54Speaker 2: million dollars in royalties.
- 12:56Speaker 1: So I would be so when you record the record,
- 12:59Speaker 1: it's like two friends recording in a studio, right is that?
- 13:03Speaker 2: What's friends? Is a loose term? All right?
- 13:05Speaker 1: But friends? But you know what, what's the old saying?
- 13:10Speaker 2: And at the time at the time I'm living I'm
- 13:14Speaker 2: how old was I at the time, Like early thirties.
- 13:17Speaker 2: I'm living in my brother's attic in Rochester. It's like
- 13:21Speaker 2: rock bottom for me. My brother's married, got a kid
- 13:24Speaker 2: at ack, ain't got no heat I'm up there.
- 13:26Speaker 1: And you had this hit song on the radio boom
- 13:29Speaker 1: and well, and you find out about it while you're
- 13:32Speaker 1: visiting in La Yes, and this sounds like a terrible
- 13:37Speaker 1: nightmare slash h. I definitely want to go through all
- 13:40Speaker 1: these emotions that you're feeling.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Well, okay, yeah, let's do it. I mean obviously there's
- 13:47Speaker 2: some holy shit.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, because validate, validation, like yeah, like all of
- 13:54Speaker 3: the things, because it's this isn't something that I hadn't
- 13:58Speaker 3: been working towards.
- 13:58Speaker 2: So it started out as anartist myself, you know, like
- 14:02Speaker 2: started my first studio with some friends when I was
- 14:04Speaker 2: sixteen technically, So in the midst of all that, it's like,
- 14:11Speaker 2: there's that, but then there's the part of me now.
- 14:13Speaker 2: The producer was a Christian, super Christian, like very godly
- 14:18Speaker 2: youth pastor.
- 14:20Speaker 1: That's really going to hurt because then you really had
- 14:23Speaker 1: more faith that things are going to go.
- 14:25Speaker 2: I didn't buy his bullshit from the beginning. Oh yeah, so.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Why do you mention it?
- 14:34Speaker 2: Because the part of the struggle that I had then
- 14:36Speaker 2: was being like, Yo, this dude's not a good dude,
- 14:38Speaker 2: and be like, Yo, this is what happened, and nobody
- 14:41Speaker 2: nobody was really believing me, Like, I don't want a
- 14:44Speaker 2: few of my peers that were like witnessed this stuff happen,
- 14:49Speaker 2: but in a big scheme of things, nobody was like.
- 14:51Speaker 1: No, no one was biting.
- 14:53Speaker 2: No one was biting. Until years later he got arrested
- 14:56Speaker 2: for some.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Shit and genuinely curious was the producer black white or
- 15:02Speaker 1: he was black? So also, you're this white boy, you
- 15:06Speaker 1: got it. You gotta acknowledge the stereotype for white people,
- 15:08Speaker 1: especially in hip hop. Of course there has to be
- 15:12Speaker 1: a struggle there, but man, it must have felt kind
- 15:15Speaker 1: of good to a white rapper picked it up, you know,
- 15:19Speaker 1: iconic legend.
- 15:20Speaker 2: It's you know what's funny. The part about it that
- 15:22Speaker 2: makes it really funny is I was a huge fan
- 15:25Speaker 2: of Eminem, so obviously was right well because product, because
- 15:29Speaker 2: I mean, I started rapping before everybody knew who Eman
- 15:31Speaker 2: I was, so before I was like you Vanilla, I
- 15:33Speaker 2: used to ask, motherfucker, that was the clownage that I
- 15:36Speaker 2: would get as a white kid rapp And it was like,
- 15:39Speaker 2: I was rapping before it was cool for white kids
- 15:41Speaker 2: to rap. Yeah, And then he came along, and I'm like,
- 15:46Speaker 2: this dude's dope, like and hearing him and he's dope,
- 15:49Speaker 2: and his album dropped and I was showing people his
- 15:52Speaker 2: stuff prior to his album coming out, and his album dropped.
- 15:55Speaker 2: At a time in my life where I was sent away,
- 15:57Speaker 2: I got caught with coke and crack and I I
- 16:00Speaker 2: got copped out like I was using it, blah blah blah,
- 16:03Speaker 2: first defense, facing one in the third to three years.
- 16:06Speaker 2: It was making an example out of me, and I
- 16:09Speaker 2: copped out, ended up in drug court, long term rehab.
- 16:13Speaker 2: Bullshit because I'm like, I got a drug problem. If
- 16:16Speaker 2: sold drugs to buy weed.
- 16:17Speaker 1: And just to clarify, though you never touched the stuff, right, no,
- 16:21Speaker 1: I never smoke crack. Hilarious sold back, You're hilarious because
- 16:26Speaker 1: now could you imagine a non drug person in.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Rehab and well, and the worst part is like, so
- 16:31Speaker 2: I'm in an outpatient and this is terrible. The outpatient
- 16:34Speaker 2: counselor's like I'm twenty three, I'm like sixteen years old,
- 16:39Speaker 2: Like I'm on full top of the world, asshole attitude.
- 16:43Speaker 2: And this is all before this mute this part, But
- 16:47Speaker 2: at this time I'm just talking about it because and
- 16:49Speaker 2: so I think she's hitting on me. So I asked
- 16:51Speaker 2: her out to dinner. Next time I go to court,
- 16:53Speaker 2: I don't arrest my ass, kick me out of there,
- 16:56Speaker 2: send me to long term impatient.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Wow.
- 16:58Speaker 2: So then I get sent away for a year too long.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Tom in patient basically with people it's like their last
- 17:02Speaker 2: stop before going to prison. So I was in there
- 17:04Speaker 2: with like heroinatics and all sorts of stuff, and I'm
- 17:06Speaker 2: trying to play along. You are like I belonged, like
- 17:09Speaker 2: I'm at like I have this drug problem. I did.
- 17:12Speaker 2: I had a problem selling drugs at the time, and
- 17:16Speaker 2: so I'm trying to play that along.
- 17:18Speaker 1: And yeah, so you you you passed the acting test
- 17:25Speaker 1: of being a reform drug addict.
- 17:27Speaker 2: I was there eleven and a half months and then
- 17:29Speaker 2: I got kicked out. They said I went as far
- 17:30Speaker 2: as I could in the program. So I thought I
- 17:31Speaker 2: was about to go to jail anyways.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Oh but really they were just releasing you because you
- 17:35Speaker 1: were no longer a fake drug addict, right is that.
- 17:38Speaker 2: What the theoretically? Sure? Yeah, I don't know. I know
- 17:41Speaker 2: they fucked up some paperwork. I was supposed to get
- 17:42Speaker 2: sent to a halfway house. That didn't happen. I got
- 17:45Speaker 2: out patient again this time it was an old lady,
- 17:47Speaker 2: so I wasn't trying to hit on her.
- 17:48Speaker 1: We was good, okay, okay, got it. So the record
- 17:53Speaker 1: comes out on the on the radio. This man sold
- 17:58Speaker 1: it and his respet bonds is like, thanks.
- 18:02Speaker 2: What do you want? What did you do on the record?
- 18:04Speaker 2: And I'm just like really and so. And this is
- 18:06Speaker 2: prior to me being signed to BMG, So I hadn't
- 18:09Speaker 2: been Everything I knew about how song splits and things
- 18:12Speaker 2: of that nature worked up to that point was just
- 18:15Speaker 2: of what I learned around people that I was working with,
- 18:19Speaker 2: and we were all figuring that out. There wasn't nobody
- 18:20Speaker 2: that really teaching us how to do this shit. We
- 18:23Speaker 2: were kids, you know, So I didn't know. Like I said,
- 18:27Speaker 2: I didn't know how to protect myself. I didn't know
- 18:28Speaker 2: any of these things. And that was pretty much it.
- 18:35Speaker 2: I had no money to get a lawyer, you know,
- 18:37Speaker 2: and going after so why.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Did you think that to even ask you to pay
- 18:41Speaker 1: for a seventeen thousand record when he knew you didn't
- 18:44Speaker 1: even have that money.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Because it was his way of sweeping it over and
- 18:50Speaker 2: doing what he wanted with it and trying to find
- 18:52Speaker 2: a way to not entitle me to anything. Yeah, yeah,
- 18:55Speaker 2: but later, like I said, later, you know, and getting
- 18:57Speaker 2: in a songwriting sessions like with bigger artists and things
- 19:02Speaker 2: of that nature. After I signed, I learned rather quickly
- 19:06Speaker 2: what it's like, Oh, this is what you're entitled to
- 19:08Speaker 2: when you're a part of a record like this, Like
- 19:10Speaker 2: somebody can almost be in a room half the time,
- 19:12Speaker 2: not do anything and get a piece of assng on. Say, really,
- 19:16Speaker 2: one word can kind of entitle you to some stuff
- 19:20Speaker 2: because you could say one word that changes the direction
- 19:22Speaker 2: of the entire record.
- 19:24Speaker 1: So like if you're doing a studio session and I
- 19:26Speaker 1: sit in on your studio session and I say fla
- 19:29Speaker 1: la la la, and you go.
- 19:31Speaker 2: And that becomes part of the hook and you change
- 19:33Speaker 2: the direction of the record, the right thing to do
- 19:36Speaker 2: is to give you a piece of that.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Really, even off that, even does it happened?
- 19:40Speaker 2: Not really. I'm just this is why I don't like
- 19:42Speaker 2: people in my sessions managers, Like, if you're not a
- 19:44Speaker 2: part of this creative process, fuck up out of here.
- 19:46Speaker 2: You're a distraction and I don't want any of your ideas.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Okay, but just so for educational points, because this just
- 19:53Speaker 1: got real interesting. So if if a girl or you
- 19:56Speaker 1: know how guys like to invite a bunch of chicks
- 19:57Speaker 1: to a studio session, right theoret girl comes in because
- 20:02Speaker 1: this does happen. I've been in the studio. Everybody know
- 20:04Speaker 1: will go down in studios. Well hopefully people know. But okay,
- 20:08Speaker 1: say some girls in there and they're working on a
- 20:11Speaker 1: record and she goes fallow la or she goes oh
- 20:13Speaker 1: I like that part, but maybe I'd say it like this.
- 20:16Speaker 1: If they don't take that advice, does she still option? Okay? No,
- 20:22Speaker 1: but then how can you even prove if if it
- 20:25Speaker 1: did make.
- 20:26Speaker 2: See and that's where the gray area of creating something
- 20:29Speaker 2: out of thin air and making it a tangible product.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Okay, interesting, but then it becomes a he said, she
- 20:36Speaker 1: said too. Right yeah, so the best your best piece
- 20:40Speaker 1: of advice is nobody outside of artists and production are
- 20:43Speaker 1: in the room first.
- 20:44Speaker 2: I mean, and again it's like it varies. Everybody has
- 20:46Speaker 2: their process. So is there an end? A will be
- 20:49Speaker 2: all to that?
- 20:50Speaker 1: It's like, so to clarify though, for lighters, what role
- 20:54Speaker 1: did you play on that actual co.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Writing concept of the record is mine? There was as
- 21:00Speaker 2: we're going back and forth on production, he's playing keys.
- 21:03Speaker 2: I was a guy in the direction of the keys
- 21:05Speaker 2: and what we were doing, and then writing the hook.
- 21:09Speaker 2: He had the idea of it, and then together we
- 21:12Speaker 2: formulated it into this lighter sting. And mind you, the
- 21:16Speaker 2: original demo when Bruno and the smeusing tens and everybody
- 21:19Speaker 2: got it, they wrote it out even further, so it
- 21:23Speaker 2: was even better when they were done with it.
- 21:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:25Speaker 2: But the so I was a part.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Of the writing the melody, so Eminem did rewrite his.
- 21:31Speaker 1: He wrote his own. Everybody wrote their own.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Yes, except for the course. The course is the one
- 21:36Speaker 2: thing that stayed, and that was the one thing. It's
- 21:39Speaker 2: funny because the entire concept of the record, even some
- 21:42Speaker 2: things that were said in it. I to this day
- 21:44Speaker 2: don't know whether they heard the demo with just the
- 21:47Speaker 2: hook or my verses, because there's even some similarities there.
- 21:50Speaker 2: But a hook will guide you, exceptually on a record,
- 21:54Speaker 2: So I wouldn't say that. And and I know some
- 21:59Speaker 2: of that stories got back to some of the folks
- 22:01Speaker 2: in that camp, but at the time I know none
- 22:06Speaker 2: of them had any clue. Yeah, So it wasn't like, oh,
- 22:09Speaker 2: I know, but in talking about prior, like when I
- 22:13Speaker 2: was sent away, like I got a home visit and
- 22:15Speaker 2: Eminem's record came out and like his first album was
- 22:18Speaker 2: some shady and so it's like rock bottom and things
- 22:21Speaker 2: of that nature are on it. And so that was
- 22:24Speaker 2: like at that time, I got this home visit, which
- 22:26Speaker 2: sucked me up because they send you home to fuck
- 22:27Speaker 2: you up on purpose to see if you're gonna do drugs,
- 22:30Speaker 2: And that was a big It was like I was
- 22:34Speaker 2: sixteen seventeen, torn away from everything I've known, thrown out
- 22:37Speaker 2: on a farm in the middle of a country, grew
- 22:39Speaker 2: up in the fucking city shoveling pig shit for a
- 22:42Speaker 2: year and a half. For a year. It was basically
- 22:44Speaker 2: a boot camp, nicely for a boot camp, shot camp
- 22:46Speaker 2: type shit. And so when this happened later on and
- 22:50Speaker 2: then I didn't get anything for it, it was almost
- 22:52Speaker 2: like one of my I don't want to say, like
- 22:54Speaker 2: one of my superheroes, especially for hip hop, and knowing
- 22:58Speaker 2: his story from what I had up to that point,
- 23:00Speaker 2: it was like such a It was like a kick
- 23:03Speaker 2: in the dick because now there's this record that it
- 23:07Speaker 2: was like, Yo, this would be a record that have
- 23:09Speaker 2: not only changed my life, but everybody I had been
- 23:12Speaker 2: working with could have helped my helped me put my
- 23:15Speaker 2: sister's kids and a better school, paid off my mom's house,
- 23:18Speaker 2: which still ain't paid off. But like things of that nature,
- 23:23Speaker 2: so it was it was interesting the effect that it
- 23:27Speaker 2: had on me in that sense as well.
- 23:29Speaker 1: But in this case though, it wasn't an eminem situation.
- 23:32Speaker 1: This is a this is a produce that Eminem has
- 23:37Speaker 1: no clue. Yeah, not even not even in proximity on any.
- 23:41Speaker 2: Level, not even close.
- 23:42Speaker 1: So why did you feel that way?
- 23:45Speaker 2: Uh? Like shit? You feel how you feel? You know
- 23:50Speaker 2: it wasn't.
- 23:50Speaker 1: I don't know if I'm ever going to be affected
- 23:53Speaker 1: by jays if if anything has to any peripherals of
- 23:58Speaker 1: jay Z. Just no, I'm a man at whoever played
- 24:02Speaker 1: be but lazy, I'll be like Yo, it must have
- 24:05Speaker 1: been annoyed that our stars would be aligned. And it's
- 24:07Speaker 1: just going it.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Sound good like and and But when you've been fighting
- 24:10Speaker 2: your whole life to have this validation, have this point,
- 24:13Speaker 2: You're broke, you're living, You're thirty years old, living in
- 24:15Speaker 2: an attic, can't figure out, ain't got like, ain't got
- 24:19Speaker 2: a pot to pissing, selling drugs ain't the way because
- 24:22Speaker 2: you keep doing that and get in trouble. So it's
- 24:24Speaker 2: like there's a there's a bitterness because then I start
- 24:28Speaker 2: counting what I'm not getting. It's like, yeah, there's this vindication.
- 24:31Speaker 2: This is great. Now it's like but now I'm not
- 24:33Speaker 2: like now the opportunity. And it wasn't even always about
- 24:36Speaker 2: the money. It was like that alone, that credit could
- 24:39Speaker 2: have opened the door for me to go in with
- 24:41Speaker 2: somebody else, to going with this person, which then.
- 24:44Speaker 1: And that's at the moment everybody works, Yeah, and that's
- 24:47Speaker 1: a natural reaction. That would be a total logical, natural reaction.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Everybody would feel that way, right, yeah, and you know.
- 24:53Speaker 2: And so and it's like and then there's the part
- 24:56Speaker 2: of like, don't go after it. You're like, don't try
- 24:59Speaker 2: to fight for it, chase down the labels and this that,
- 25:02Speaker 2: because then you're gonna get black balled. And it's kind
- 25:04Speaker 2: of like and I fought with that for a long time,
- 25:07Speaker 2: and it's like black ball from what?
- 25:20Speaker 1: So then how does BMG pick you up from a
- 25:22Speaker 1: non credit?
- 25:24Speaker 2: So the story travel and it ends up I end up.
- 25:30Speaker 2: It's funny. I was so broke. I had an NPC
- 25:33Speaker 2: two thousand or twenty five hundred at the time, which
- 25:35Speaker 2: is a piece of studio equipment A lot of producers know,
- 25:37Speaker 2: and I had to sell it so I could get
- 25:42Speaker 2: the money to afford the bus ticket to take the
- 25:44Speaker 2: bus down to New York City to have the meeting
- 25:49Speaker 2: for BMG. So I sold a piece of my studio equipment, damn,
- 25:54Speaker 2: so I could go and be able to Yeah, so
- 25:56Speaker 2: I could have Actually, it's funny I think about it.
- 25:58Speaker 2: I sold it. I sold that. I sold that NPC
- 26:01Speaker 2: to thirty eight Speci, another artist out of Rochester that
- 26:05Speaker 2: he's done a lot of stuff with Benny, Griselda and
- 26:07Speaker 2: them guys. So these are all this is all the
- 26:09Speaker 2: kind of the folks I grew up around green Land
- 26:11Speaker 2: and all those folks.
- 26:12Speaker 1: You go to the meeting and how does that meeting go?
- 26:16Speaker 2: Meeting is great? Like so I had prior to I
- 26:19Speaker 2: sent over some demos and they liked what they heard.
- 26:24Speaker 2: They saw potential whatever the case and the story had
- 26:27Speaker 2: he had heard the story about this Lighter's record. So
- 26:31Speaker 2: we talked and it was a writing camp that weekend,
- 26:34Speaker 2: so it was kind of like, we want to sign
- 26:36Speaker 2: you and this to this col pub deal. I'm at this.
- 26:42Speaker 2: The first session I have is at Michael Bolton's house.
- 26:46Speaker 2: Oh wow, was a friend of Billy's. Ye so, And
- 26:50Speaker 2: it wasn't with Michael, but it's at his house because
- 26:53Speaker 2: that's where they were holding the camp and they were
- 26:55Speaker 2: like next to each other in different studios. But the
- 26:58Speaker 2: story like he was Billy was advocate of the underdog,
- 27:03Speaker 2: and part of it was like, yo, we can look
- 27:05Speaker 2: into this and go after it litigation, YadA YadA, YadA YadA.
- 27:08Speaker 2: So part of that was, oh shit, I might actually
- 27:10Speaker 2: get what's due to me. So I signed because first
- 27:13Speaker 2: of all, I didn't have many other options.
- 27:16Speaker 1: So you're selling your producer equipment. So it's like the
- 27:18Speaker 1: options on the tape.
- 27:20Speaker 2: No no, no, It's like where, yeah, where does it
- 27:21Speaker 2: go from here? And meanwhile, I'm on, I have a
- 27:23Speaker 2: radio show in Rochester as well. I'm on I have
- 27:27Speaker 2: a radio show seven on Saturday nights. At the time
- 27:31Speaker 2: that became one of the highest rated radio shows in
- 27:34Speaker 2: the station's history at one point. So it's like, here
- 27:38Speaker 2: I am in this public perception of like, oh, he's
- 27:41Speaker 2: on radio, have a studio working on stuff like this,
- 27:45Speaker 2: But I'm living in an addict selling a piece of
- 27:48Speaker 2: equipment to be able to go take a meeting to
- 27:50Speaker 2: possibly get a deal, to possibly get me where I
- 27:54Speaker 2: think I want to be.
- 27:55Speaker 1: Yeah, so you get this deal, do you go home
- 27:59Speaker 1: like feeling a little bit more vindicated?
- 28:03Speaker 2: Yeah, of course, like I was on top of the world,
- 28:05Speaker 2: like in some because there was the vindication. It was
- 28:08Speaker 2: like from this bad discame and it was like, all right,
- 28:10Speaker 2: I'm gonna turn this into something. But I was. I
- 28:14Speaker 2: came from the hip hop side of things, and mainly
- 28:17Speaker 2: everybody that was a part of this team at the
- 28:20Speaker 2: time it was more pop, all rock type stuff, some
- 28:23Speaker 2: dance stuff. So it was a lot of me trying
- 28:26Speaker 2: to figure out where I fit in there. And because
- 28:29Speaker 2: I couldn't really sing, I wasn't the greatest producer either.
- 28:32Speaker 2: It was like my main skill was like I couldn't
- 28:34Speaker 2: come up with some melody, but they're simple, which are
- 28:37Speaker 2: what most hits are. Yeah, yeah, it's like most hits
- 28:40Speaker 2: tend to be simple melodies. So, and I'm a really
- 28:43Speaker 2: really good writer and putting words together in storylines, but
- 28:46Speaker 2: I didn't feel like I had a lot of respect
- 28:48Speaker 2: amongst the people that I was working with or signed
- 28:51Speaker 2: to around with, because oh, here's this guy, here's this story,
- 28:56Speaker 2: here's this record. He can't really sing his records, and now
- 28:58Speaker 2: I'm trying to get people to demo the records because
- 29:00Speaker 2: people don't hear what you want them to hear. They
- 29:02Speaker 2: only hear what they hear.
- 29:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:03Speaker 2: So you know, there was a lot of struggles in that.
- 29:05Speaker 2: So I felt vindicated and but at the same time,
- 29:09Speaker 2: it was like another layer of I got to prove
- 29:11Speaker 2: myself even more. Yeah.
- 29:12Speaker 1: Like, but you get the deal and it comes with
- 29:15Speaker 1: a check. Yeah, so what's the first thing you do
- 29:17Speaker 1: with your check?
- 29:19Speaker 2: First thing I did was put a little down payment
- 29:23Speaker 2: on a car.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Okay, you didn't replace the equipment, No, not at that time. Okay, okay,
- 29:28Speaker 1: so you get a car.
- 29:30Speaker 2: Yep, I get I put a down payment on a
- 29:32Speaker 2: seven used Forward Escape.
- 29:35Speaker 1: Oh so that's not even a yeah.
- 29:37Speaker 2: No, yeah, it's nothing crazy. Usually. I had one hundred
- 29:39Speaker 2: thousand miles I when I bought it. But I needed
- 29:41Speaker 2: something because I knew I was gonna have to be
- 29:42Speaker 2: driving back and forth between Rochester and New York. So
- 29:46Speaker 2: and I was looking in New York, I'm like, oh,
- 29:47Speaker 2: look at all the oh, the taxi cabs, the trucks,
- 29:51Speaker 2: they're all for the escapes. These things gotta last long,
- 29:54Speaker 2: probably should buy one of them. And that's literally how
- 29:56Speaker 2: I decided to buy that vehicle. And then so that
- 30:01Speaker 2: was the first thing. And then I got an apartment
- 30:04Speaker 2: down in New York City with another buddy from Rochester,
- 30:08Speaker 2: Emilio Rojas, So he and I were living together in
- 30:13Speaker 2: Washington Heights, so I was there as well as back,
- 30:16Speaker 2: and I was driving back and forth every weekend to
- 30:19Speaker 2: come to my radio show in Rochester because that opened
- 30:22Speaker 2: a lot of doors music industry wise for me, as
- 30:25Speaker 2: well as being on the radio, you know, a little
- 30:27Speaker 2: ego fulfillment, and I was fairly decent. I was pretty
- 30:29Speaker 2: good at it. And then living down in New York
- 30:34Speaker 2: City and spending as much time as I could getting
- 30:36Speaker 2: trying to get into studios and things of that nature
- 30:39Speaker 2: with artists. But getting into it doesn't matter how good
- 30:43Speaker 2: you are. Getting into the rooms with people is all
- 30:48Speaker 2: relationship based. Yeah, of course, keep hitting my elbow on
- 30:50Speaker 2: this shit.
- 30:51Speaker 1: Sorry about that, all right, because I'm short? Yeah, are
- 30:54Speaker 1: you done cooking?
- 30:55Speaker 2: Ready? All right?
- 30:56Speaker 1: Defeat us? Right, feed us, feed us. So at what
- 31:03Speaker 1: point do you decide to hop on a plane and
- 31:05Speaker 1: after the well, no, tell me how you end up
- 31:08Speaker 1: at the BMG buildings. Clearly, it's not a hard situation
- 31:13Speaker 1: to end up in. But but go ahead, what do.
- 31:16Speaker 2: You mean, Like, what do you mean How'd I end
- 31:18Speaker 2: up in the BMG.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Building because you were squatting there, you said.
- 31:20Speaker 2: Oh, oh that part. So BMG was moving offices, and
- 31:28Speaker 2: at the time money was my money started drying up,
- 31:31Speaker 2: the advanced money. You know, it wasn't a big big check, yeah,
- 31:34Speaker 2: and back and forth whatever what not. So that started
- 31:37Speaker 2: drying up. So I literally moved. Instead of bringing all
- 31:41Speaker 2: my studio equipment back to Rochester, I put it all
- 31:45Speaker 2: in the BMG building, and I bought an air mattress
- 31:49Speaker 2: and I would drive down. I would be in Rochester
- 31:51Speaker 2: because now at this time, I started selling dope again quietly,
- 31:57Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, So gotta do what you gotta do.
- 32:00Speaker 2: You gotta do what you gotta do.
- 32:02Speaker 1: And no hot sauce for me? What no hot sauce
- 32:06Speaker 1: for me? What no hot sauce for me? If I
- 32:11Speaker 1: do it, I'm gonna have to control it.
- 32:14Speaker 2: That saysn't even this red hot, It ain't even that hot. Yeah,
- 32:18Speaker 2: the white boy out hot sauce. You on your own show.
- 32:21Speaker 1: It's okay, I'm half white.
- 32:22Speaker 4: Remember you say your spice level is Come on, it's
- 32:32Speaker 4: the white huh, I got the white side.
- 32:33Speaker 2: I love hot sauce, you said. My best friend's West Indian,
- 32:36Speaker 2: so I grew up eating all sorts of spicy ship.
- 32:39Speaker 1: All right, you ready to you ready to try this?
- 32:41Speaker 2: Did you put hot sauce on it?
- 32:42Speaker 1: I put a little drop of hot sauce.
- 32:44Speaker 2: I'm ready. I mean, I know what it tastes like.
- 32:48Speaker 1: You better have to two months straight.
- 32:50Speaker 2: It tastes like tears and heartache, hilarious air mattresses and artaches.
- 33:00Speaker 1: When you start lying air mattresses, you know, like you're
- 33:03Speaker 1: on survival mode. And at no point are you thinking
- 33:06Speaker 1: to I mean, why aren't you thinking to get like
- 33:09Speaker 1: a regular day job. I know you have the radio show,
- 33:13Speaker 1: and I know you have the BMG deal, but why
- 33:15Speaker 1: pick up well?
- 33:16Speaker 2: I mean, in some cases I did you know, I've
- 33:19Speaker 2: worked my whole life, but it's not a nothing's ever enough,
- 33:22Speaker 2: not a little nine to five ain't shit. Like you know,
- 33:24Speaker 2: there was a point in time I was a catering
- 33:25Speaker 2: manager in Manhattan. So now I'm delivering and this is
- 33:28Speaker 2: prior to this, I'm delivering shit. The photo shoots, meeting
- 33:31Speaker 2: ghost face, killing shit like that, and it's like, you know,
- 33:34Speaker 2: first time, actually the first first week on the job,
- 33:36Speaker 2: I met Russell Simmons at a car wash. Fuck, I'm
- 33:40Speaker 2: gonna say to him, Hey, man, listen to my demo. Yeah,
- 33:43Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. It's like. And that was
- 33:45Speaker 2: one thing it took me that I I and maybe
- 33:48Speaker 2: some of that was my own pride.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Yeahs if anybody would understand these dudes.
- 33:53Speaker 2: Because you would think you would think so. But that's
- 33:56Speaker 2: also the other thing that it took me a very
- 33:58Speaker 2: long time because I was really bitter when I was younger,
- 34:00Speaker 2: I was better. I was angry. I still am a
- 34:02Speaker 2: little angry. Still a little bitter too, but with a
- 34:05Speaker 2: different understanding because the people that make it, people that
- 34:11Speaker 2: break through, fight, they fought for it, like and when
- 34:18Speaker 2: you haven't had to fight for it or go through
- 34:20Speaker 2: the things to get certain places, you have no appreciation
- 34:23Speaker 2: for what it takes to get there. You have no
- 34:25Speaker 2: respect for the relationships that you may introduce. It's like
- 34:30Speaker 2: you and I know each other a little bit, so
- 34:34Speaker 2: it's like you'll introduce me to somebody knowing my character,
- 34:36Speaker 2: knowing where I come from knowing I'm not going to
- 34:39Speaker 2: put you in a fucked up position.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Yeah with that person, yep.
- 34:43Speaker 2: To where somebody that hasn't earned that or learned that
- 34:47Speaker 2: along the way on their own can fuck everything up
- 34:49Speaker 2: for somebody just off an introduction.
- 34:51Speaker 1: By the way, I just experienced that in the entertainment business,
- 34:55Speaker 1: and I'll tell you it is off camera and my
- 34:58Speaker 1: first time ever, and I was like, what fuck.
- 35:03Speaker 2: It's like? And relationships are more valuable than money, yeah,
- 35:06Speaker 2: because the relationships can bring you all the money in
- 35:08Speaker 2: the world, you know. And I have a lot of
- 35:10Speaker 2: long standing relationships. Like there's people at labels now that
- 35:12Speaker 2: I'm friends with that I've been friends with for twenty
- 35:14Speaker 2: years that I met when they were sitting on the
- 35:16Speaker 2: stoop as a street team. They were on the street.
- 35:18Speaker 1: See, it's so funny you say that, because when I
- 35:20Speaker 1: had Celebrity High magazine, a lot of the people that
- 35:24Speaker 1: were when I was working with all the labels having
- 35:27Speaker 1: that magazine, they were like kind of more at the
- 35:29Speaker 1: bottom level. Now they're running shit like later like literally
- 35:35Speaker 1: like Vice President's President and the one hundred per And.
- 35:38Speaker 2: That's where a lot of my friends are like, you know,
- 35:40Speaker 2: it's like because everybody's worked to get there. So to
- 35:42Speaker 2: get back to that part of like where the bitterness
- 35:46Speaker 2: and stuff is like, it took me a long time.
- 35:47Speaker 2: I used to be mad at some some I don't
- 35:49Speaker 2: want to say mad, but I used to talk shit
- 35:52Speaker 2: because like, yo, motherfucker, how you can't open the door
- 35:55Speaker 2: for somebody from the same place you're from and things
- 35:57Speaker 2: of that nature when you have the opportunity to do so.
- 36:01Speaker 2: And it wasn't until I started making my way through
- 36:04Speaker 2: some of them doors myself and people started coming to
- 36:07Speaker 2: me thinking I could open doors to where I learned
- 36:11Speaker 2: and realized what it's like on other sides of it.
- 36:14Speaker 2: And I started learning that with the radio station when
- 36:16Speaker 2: I got there, and I was an advocate for independent
- 36:18Speaker 2: artists and getting independent artists songs played on this radio station.
- 36:23Speaker 2: So I'll be playing for a week, they'd be back
- 36:24Speaker 2: next week, like, Yo, I got a new single. I
- 36:26Speaker 2: want you to play. It's like, nah, that's not how
- 36:28Speaker 2: this works, man, Like you need to work this thing.
- 36:31Speaker 2: Take it. Take it from Rochester, go to Buffalo, show
- 36:33Speaker 2: them you're getting you played here, get them to play it,
- 36:35Speaker 2: and then do it in Syracuse and make it regional
- 36:38Speaker 2: like with this one record work that nah, man, this
- 36:40Speaker 2: new record is shit. I'm like, yo, I can't it
- 36:42Speaker 2: doesn't work that way. I'm I can't play that record
- 36:44Speaker 2: for you. Well fuck you. Then I'm like, oh, oh
- 36:49Speaker 2: fuck me, damn. I just focked for two months to
- 36:51Speaker 2: get this record on for you. Now I'm telling you
- 36:54Speaker 2: I can't play your next record and it's fucked me okay,
- 36:56Speaker 2: s yeah, And that I learned that along the way.
- 37:00Speaker 2: That is a very common thing. Like people don't like
- 37:03Speaker 2: to be told no, yeah, and I'm like to tell you,
- 37:06Speaker 2: and I'm pretty straightforward. So it's like, that's why it's
- 37:11Speaker 2: been interesting I transition into LA because a lot of
- 37:14Speaker 2: people it's like, what's the saying, Uh, people in New
- 37:18Speaker 2: York are nice or kind, but they're not nice. A
- 37:21Speaker 2: lot of people in LA are nice but they're not kind.
- 37:24Speaker 1: I never heard that, but that makes sense, you know
- 37:26Speaker 1: what I'm saying.
- 37:27Speaker 2: It's kind of like, you know, you fall down, like
- 37:28Speaker 2: get up you for you know, in New York, help
- 37:30Speaker 2: you get up, you fucking idiot, Like let me help
- 37:32Speaker 2: you get the fuck up, dumb dumb to where you know?
- 37:34Speaker 2: And then they say a lot of people out here
- 37:36Speaker 2: it's like, and I want to be careful because I
- 37:38Speaker 2: don't want to create that separation. But they say like
- 37:40Speaker 2: just okay, keep walking. You know what I'm saying, like
- 37:45Speaker 2: like that fake shit, like oh nah, girl, you so pretty?
- 37:48Speaker 2: Turn around. I can't stand that bitch. Yeah, you know
- 37:51Speaker 2: what I'm saying. But I think that comes in every city,
- 37:54Speaker 2: so I want to be very careful with that. I
- 37:56Speaker 2: think it's just more prevalent out here because so many
- 37:58Speaker 2: people come out here to be this thing. So they
- 38:01Speaker 2: there's this it's the girl from Milwaukee or Wichita that
- 38:08Speaker 2: gives off that I gotta be this sort of way
- 38:11Speaker 2: to where it's like the Natives are fucking dope out here,
- 38:14Speaker 2: same thing, like you know. It's like you know, so, I.
- 38:16Speaker 1: Don't know, it's very rarely you you in LA and
- 38:19Speaker 1: you stumble upon an actual.
- 38:21Speaker 2: Actually, I've come across a bunch like some of my
- 38:24Speaker 2: closest friends here are Native. Yeah yeah, let me think
- 38:27Speaker 2: about that.
- 38:28Speaker 4: I have.
- 38:30Speaker 1: I have like maybe one or two close friends from LA.
- 38:34Speaker 1: I don't know all my my die hard friends. It's
- 38:38Speaker 1: always going to be New York all day. Like literally,
- 38:41Speaker 1: I had maybe one or two solids here in LA.
- 38:43Speaker 1: But I love my girls in LA, but don't nobody
- 38:47Speaker 1: compared to my girls in New York. Girls different, Yeah,
- 38:51Speaker 1: because they different, they ride or die differently.
- 38:54Speaker 2: But the man, listen, I'm telling you. The friends I've
- 38:58Speaker 2: made here have become family. And it's a lot of
- 39:01Speaker 2: it is it's like people from here because they don't
- 39:03Speaker 2: they've grown up around the bullshit they're not. I don't
- 39:05Speaker 2: give a fuck who you know, don't give a shit.
- 39:07Speaker 2: I don't get like you know. And of course there's
- 39:09Speaker 2: there's exceptions to all that, but that's in every major city.
- 39:12Speaker 2: That doesn't matter. So it's just a matter of finding
- 39:14Speaker 2: your circle.
- 39:15Speaker 1: So take me to your next big milestone. After the
- 39:18Speaker 1: BMG deal.
- 39:20Speaker 2: Man, I wish I could. That's, you know, like because
- 39:24Speaker 2: the BMG deal carried on for fuck six years and
- 39:29Speaker 2: I signed the deal right at the time when the
- 39:31Speaker 2: industry was changing, publishing deals were changing, so there was
- 39:34Speaker 2: no there was like then you had to have my deal. Basically,
- 39:38Speaker 2: I had to have three records. Each record is one
- 39:41Speaker 2: hundred percent. If I co write the record with four people,
- 39:44Speaker 2: I only get twenty five percent. So I had to
- 39:48Speaker 2: have three. I had to have three hundred percent worth
- 39:51Speaker 2: of records that placed on major labels in order to
- 39:55Speaker 2: get out of my contract. Oh wow, at a time
- 39:58Speaker 2: when now Spotify and things these nature are taken over
- 40:01Speaker 2: and these are physical some of the deal. It's physical albums,
- 40:04Speaker 2: CDs they stopped, they stopped making them. Yeah, so I
- 40:08Speaker 2: would have been in the deal forever.
- 40:09Speaker 1: Crazy if you think about it. I ain't seen a
- 40:11Speaker 1: CD in a long ass time. And there was a
- 40:14Speaker 1: point where you'd go to Walmart or wherever you bought
- 40:16Speaker 1: your CDs and you went in there just for CD.
- 40:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:20Speaker 1: Now it was the last time we did that.
- 40:23Speaker 2: Every Tuesday. It used to be every Tuesday, Tuesday at midnight,
- 40:26Speaker 2: hit the record store, get the new big punish.
- 40:27Speaker 1: Your album like okay, damn the good old days.
- 40:32Speaker 2: All right, now, that's all right. I'm happy. I'm happy
- 40:35Speaker 2: to be here. One of my friends ain't make it
- 40:37Speaker 2: this far. Yeah. Yeah, so I'm actually talking.
- 40:41Speaker 1: There for six years you're with BMG, and are you
- 40:45Speaker 1: You're saying basically you got stuck in the deal.
- 40:49Speaker 2: I just nothing ever really landed, you know. There was
- 40:52Speaker 2: a few things that landed. We did a little NFL
- 40:54Speaker 2: network song, there was a bunch of almost had a
- 40:56Speaker 2: lot of one night stands with success. Throughout my career,
- 40:59Speaker 2: a lot of to where it was like this is
- 41:02Speaker 2: the moment, this is it? A lot of the eminem
- 41:04Speaker 2: story things difference I hate. I don't mean to say
- 41:08Speaker 2: that eminem story things, but you know a lot of
- 41:10Speaker 2: like that record situations to where it was like almost,
- 41:13Speaker 2: like I almost had end song in one of the
- 41:17Speaker 2: Fast and Furious movies. Then the end switched because Paul
- 41:23Speaker 2: Walker passed same thing with a record that was in
- 41:28Speaker 2: the running for the trailer for the first fifty Shades
- 41:31Speaker 2: of Gray and you're flipping a record and it became Beyonce.
- 41:35Speaker 2: So I've had a lot of moments like that to
- 41:38Speaker 2: where almost and now I'm on the cusp of another one.
- 41:43Speaker 2: But Jesus, yeah, I'm on the cusp of another one.
- 41:46Speaker 1: How do you stay not in a quitting place, in
- 41:50Speaker 1: a non non validation place, if that's a such word,
- 41:54Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, Like where you kind of like,
- 41:56Speaker 1: am I supposed to do this?
- 41:59Speaker 2: Man? I would? I don't know because it's heartbreaking, And
- 42:02Speaker 2: that's the part. It's like either you get it and again,
- 42:05Speaker 2: like I said, it's a feast or famine thing, but
- 42:07Speaker 2: there's nothing like I don't. I never started making music
- 42:09Speaker 2: for the money, and that's the thing. So it's like,
- 42:12Speaker 2: whether I'm making money or not off of music or
- 42:14Speaker 2: whatever the case may be, or whatever things I'm working on,
- 42:19Speaker 2: it's therapy for me. So I have no choice but
- 42:22Speaker 2: to create.
- 42:23Speaker 1: It's therapy. I can't understand that. But as an adult
- 42:26Speaker 1: in a major city, these aren't little cities we are
- 42:28Speaker 1: living and we're not talking about Ohio, no disrespect to Ohio.
- 42:32Speaker 1: I can't imagine what it's expensive in La.
- 42:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 42:35Speaker 1: Yeah, it's so funny because like I look at the
- 42:37Speaker 1: other side and I'm like, wow, that's crazy how much
- 42:40Speaker 1: things are. But at the same time, I could never
- 42:46Speaker 1: fathom living in a in like a city like that.
- 42:49Speaker 1: Like when people are like, you gotta live in Ohio
- 42:51Speaker 1: and life just is a lot cheaper, I'm like, that's.
- 42:55Speaker 2: But the opportunity. You pay for the opportunity and the
- 42:58Speaker 2: relationships and the network. And that's one of the things
- 43:00Speaker 2: I always tell people, because I have a lot of
- 43:01Speaker 2: friends that are talented as fuck that haven't left home,
- 43:06Speaker 2: have tried a little bit here and there, but don't like,
- 43:08Speaker 2: haven't stuck to it because they wouldn't go through the
- 43:10Speaker 2: two months of eating rice and beans. They wouldn't do
- 43:13Speaker 2: pushed through that extra part.
- 43:14Speaker 1: So you're saying that that you don't mind the rice
- 43:18Speaker 1: and beans as long as you have your fare well.
- 43:20Speaker 2: I'm also a hustler, so I'm gonna figure some shit out.
- 43:22Speaker 2: I've also always worked. I have a crazy work ethic,
- 43:24Speaker 2: Like that's one thing anybody will tell you. But I
- 43:25Speaker 2: got a big heart and a crazy work eth it.
- 43:27Speaker 2: So it's like, if I'd not have a big heart,
- 43:29Speaker 2: i'd be a multimillionaire already. But I make sure that
- 43:32Speaker 2: people around me that I work with are taking care
- 43:33Speaker 2: of before myself. And I think that's why a lot
- 43:36Speaker 2: of opportunities do present themselves to me.
- 43:38Speaker 1: When you say taking care before yourself, what does that
- 43:41Speaker 1: look like.
- 43:44Speaker 2: Say we got somebody that comes in and wants a
- 43:46Speaker 2: record and there's a little budget for it. I make
- 43:49Speaker 2: sure a lot of people you know. It's like, for instance,
- 43:50Speaker 2: I can say I have records that place that I
- 43:52Speaker 2: know paid ten to twenty grand and I got five
- 43:55Speaker 2: hundred dollars for it. But I know the person who's
- 44:00Speaker 2: charge a place in the record got the budget was
- 44:03Speaker 2: twenty thousand dollars for that record. So but it was
- 44:08Speaker 2: either take this little fifteen hundred dollars or don't get
- 44:13Speaker 2: the record at all placed in whatever this film or
- 44:16Speaker 2: TV show is. And those are the things that are
- 44:20Speaker 2: that make it hard too.
- 44:21Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying when you say, like, take
- 44:23Speaker 1: care of everyone before you, what does that look like?
- 44:28Speaker 2: Because I will work, I'll work a nine to five,
- 44:31Speaker 2: I'll do all that other shit to where some people aren't.
- 44:34Speaker 2: You know, some of the creatives I work with don't.
- 44:36Speaker 2: So it's like when a budget does come like there's
- 44:39Speaker 2: I'll make sure that they're taking care of to whur
- 44:40Speaker 2: A lot of people say, take care of yourself first.
- 44:44Speaker 2: I need to because that's you know, you really need
- 44:46Speaker 2: to because you can't help anybody if you can't help yourself,
- 44:49Speaker 2: something that took me a long time to really accept
- 44:51Speaker 2: and learn. But making sure that they're getting taken of,
- 44:55Speaker 2: maybe advancing money out of my personal account before the
- 44:57Speaker 2: money comes for shit, so they're able to survive another
- 45:01Speaker 2: week because I know I'm gonna figure it out. Everybody
- 45:04Speaker 2: don't got them, I'm gonna figure the ship out.
- 45:18Speaker 1: How do you and how do you not get the
- 45:20Speaker 1: point of like I'm enabling.
- 45:24Speaker 2: It's man, it's family, Like these are good people. I
- 45:28Speaker 2: don't really work with a lot of people. I won't
- 45:29Speaker 2: sit at a dinner table.
- 45:30Speaker 1: With so.
- 45:33Speaker 2: And I give tough love. It's not like it's like
- 45:35Speaker 2: I said that nice and that nice and kind ship.
- 45:37Speaker 2: I'm like, no, here, motherfucker, you need to get your
- 45:38Speaker 2: ship together, like figure the ship the fuck out, bro,
- 45:41Speaker 2: I can't do this no more. Like what the fuck about?
- 45:42Speaker 2: Go give me a check? You know, Like there's that
- 45:45Speaker 2: sort of ship. But it all always comes from an
- 45:47Speaker 2: honest place because I want. I want. It ain't no
- 45:49Speaker 2: fun to win a lot. That's the one thing. That
- 45:51Speaker 2: one that that that dude that sold that record off
- 45:56Speaker 2: I ended up getting himself in some trouble later on.
- 46:01Speaker 2: And I mean whatever money he did make from it's gone. Wow.
- 46:05Speaker 2: Had to change his name because it was like, yeah,
- 46:09Speaker 2: I actually made me glad not to be part of it,
- 46:11Speaker 2: because it was like some underage boy charge shit, okay, damn.
- 46:15Speaker 2: And it was crazy because the karma. I'm like, that's
- 46:18Speaker 2: now I'm vindicated. I was like, but I didn't want
- 46:20Speaker 2: that that way. That's not the vindication I want.
- 46:22Speaker 1: I feel bad for Uh. It's funny because now. You know,
- 46:25Speaker 1: I have a daughter now and people will come up
- 46:27Speaker 1: to me all the time and they're like, hey, but
- 46:29Speaker 1: are in the industry, And I'm like yeah, and you
- 46:32Speaker 1: always you would think that little girls aren't safe, But
- 46:34Speaker 1: in that industry.
- 46:36Speaker 2: Ain't nobody safe. Ain't nobody? Is nobody nobody, It's not.
- 46:40Speaker 2: Ain't nobody safe. I mean like, we're seeing a lot
- 46:42Speaker 2: of that shit come to the forefront. And it's crazy
- 46:45Speaker 2: because I heard you talking a little bit about it
- 46:48Speaker 2: when I first got in, and it's just like times
- 46:52Speaker 2: have changed so much. Certain shit that maybe wasn't accepted
- 46:56Speaker 2: or was accepted at a time that's just not tolerated
- 47:00Speaker 2: it all anymore. It's good to see that growth, but
- 47:02Speaker 2: it's also crazy to see worlds get flipped upside down
- 47:08Speaker 2: in various ways. It's like, we don't even need to
- 47:12Speaker 2: go into that. Let's let's stay away from that because
- 47:14Speaker 2: that's a rabbit hole of a conversation I already know.
- 47:19Speaker 2: But it's like it's just like because there's like it's
- 47:23Speaker 2: just crazy to see It's like like icons and ship
- 47:26Speaker 2: that people looked up to that and then to start
- 47:31Speaker 2: it's like the opposite side of the facade of I'm
- 47:35Speaker 2: out here looking like I'm doing good, but I'm living
- 47:37Speaker 2: in a fucking addict selling dope, trying not to get
- 47:40Speaker 2: caught because everybody thinks I got it. That a fake it, ty,
- 47:43Speaker 2: you make it ship. That's the other side, like I
- 47:45Speaker 2: made it. I'm a great guy. I'm helping everyone. Know
- 47:48Speaker 2: you took all their publishing, You're doing this crazy shit. Yeah,
- 47:51Speaker 2: it's the complete opposite extreme. Yeah, oh I see what
- 47:54Speaker 2: you see what I'm saying.
- 47:58Speaker 1: Yeah, it is if you had to do it all
- 48:03Speaker 1: over again, and like you had to write a letter
- 48:06Speaker 1: to your younger self knowing everything that you know now
- 48:11Speaker 1: stands cool.
- 48:12Speaker 2: Motherfucker stands cool. I you know, it's a tough question
- 48:16Speaker 2: because the problem with that and people have asked, you know,
- 48:19Speaker 2: people always ask questions like that, Like there's even I
- 48:24Speaker 2: love who I am as a person, and it's the
- 48:27Speaker 2: combination of everything that I've been through that have led
- 48:30Speaker 2: me to I'm not unhappy. I've made some money, I've
- 48:34Speaker 2: lost some money, made some money back, lost it again.
- 48:39Speaker 2: For me, it's like I'm at the point now to
- 48:41Speaker 2: where I'm really just trying to figure out connecting the
- 48:43Speaker 2: dots so I can actually be able to help other
- 48:46Speaker 2: people the way I've always wanted to, because I'm a
- 48:49Speaker 2: giver at the end of.
- 48:50Speaker 1: My core, you know me off Like, I hang out
- 48:55Speaker 1: with you a couple of times, and I would definitely say,
- 48:58Speaker 1: there's a couple of things I will saying about you.
- 49:01Speaker 2: Come on, let's go. Yeah, let's go. Let's go. Come on,
- 49:03Speaker 2: let's go. I want to hear it, let's go, come on,
- 49:04Speaker 2: give it to me.
- 49:05Speaker 1: There's a couple of things I say about you, but
- 49:07Speaker 1: I would say that the top tier would be, Uh,
- 49:10Speaker 1: you seem very genuine You're very hospitable, which is goes
- 49:15Speaker 1: hand in hand with genuineness. Right, You're you're definitely I
- 49:19Speaker 1: would say giver. Yeah, what else not?
- 49:22Speaker 2: There's some more shit you got give them the bad
- 49:24Speaker 2: ship too, Come on, bad ship.
- 49:26Speaker 1: No, I'm not doing that while we're recording.
- 49:29Speaker 2: Isn't that what this is about?
- 49:31Speaker 1: The bad Ship? I think you're nervous, Okay. From the
- 49:35Speaker 1: day I've met you, I think you are one hundred
- 49:38Speaker 1: percent dope. One hundred percent dope. I do think though,
- 49:43Speaker 1: if you get to know Nick and you are a female.
- 49:49Speaker 2: Okay, you got to look a little plug for myself.
- 49:52Speaker 2: There you go.
- 49:53Speaker 1: Do I get to keep it. That's for you, Okay.
- 49:55Speaker 2: I just needed you to say something nice about me
- 49:57Speaker 2: telling what she's.
- 49:58Speaker 1: One, because just gave me a present. I don't know
- 50:01Speaker 1: if i's not talking.
- 50:02Speaker 2: No, no, not, because now you're going to go into
- 50:03Speaker 2: the women part. Let's go. You can call me a
- 50:06Speaker 2: misogy and hist no.
- 50:09Speaker 1: If I had to be brutally honest and I uh
- 50:12Speaker 1: and uh and I said this behind your back before.
- 50:18Speaker 1: You obviously never heard this. But I genuinely think when
- 50:23Speaker 1: you get around you're wholesome, like you're a whole person,
- 50:26Speaker 1: You're a giver and all that. But I definitely think
- 50:28Speaker 1: as a female that there may be a possible nervous
- 50:33Speaker 1: stick with you because your mouth can go crazy. It's
- 50:36Speaker 1: almost like the guy that can talk himself out, like
- 50:39Speaker 1: you got me.
- 50:40Speaker 2: I talked myself into some.
- 50:44Speaker 1: From my takeaway, it's like you can have that that
- 50:47Speaker 1: three point shot, but your mouth can actually undo it.
- 50:51Speaker 1: That's that's not a bad side.
- 50:57Speaker 2: That I just said that, not because the part of
- 50:59Speaker 2: it is I'm willing to unpack that.
- 51:01Speaker 1: That's why I'm like you I should That's why I
- 51:03Speaker 1: said it's got to be a nervous tick. I never
- 51:06Speaker 1: I never say and I say that with respect to you, like,
- 51:10Speaker 1: and I've said this like behind your back, like one
- 51:13Speaker 1: hundred percent dope person. But there must be some kind
- 51:16Speaker 1: of like there's got to be some kind of nervous
- 51:21Speaker 1: tick that causes you to be super dope. And then
- 51:23Speaker 1: like I would say, just knowing you person, like when
- 51:26Speaker 1: you get around a female, you say some stuff that's
- 51:29Speaker 1: like what and so you'd have to assume it's got
- 51:32Speaker 1: to be like a nerd.
- 51:33Speaker 2: And this sounds terrible because it's funny.
- 51:36Speaker 1: It's a woman's perspective. If I had to be really
- 51:39Speaker 1: honest to me, it comes off like a nervous tick
- 51:42Speaker 1: because if you know the person, you're like, this person's
- 51:43Speaker 1: a solid person, So why the heck would they be
- 51:47Speaker 1: like Tourette syndrome of the polar opposite, because it's got
- 51:51Speaker 1: to be a nervous tick a lot of it.
- 51:52Speaker 2: So it's funny because when you've known me long enough,
- 51:55Speaker 2: now I don't bite my tongue. Yeah, like I just
- 51:57Speaker 2: say what the fuck I think you do? But it's like,
- 52:00Speaker 2: but in a lot of times I'll be poking.
- 52:02Speaker 1: Oh I'm po poke.
- 52:03Speaker 2: I'll be well, but i'd be poking because there's so
- 52:06Speaker 2: I guess you have to get into some of my
- 52:09Speaker 2: therapy shit. So I grew up watching my mother cheato
- 52:12Speaker 2: on my father, then finding out later my father wasn't
- 52:17Speaker 2: actually my father, and so growing up my entire life.
- 52:21Speaker 2: It made sense a week before I turned twenty nine
- 52:23Speaker 2: when I found out my father wasn't my father, and
- 52:26Speaker 2: my older brother younger sister were my half brother half sister,
- 52:30Speaker 2: and my entire family was lying to me my whole life.
- 52:33Speaker 2: So a lot of me, especially when I have the
- 52:35Speaker 2: love hate relationship with women, because I give my all.
- 52:41Speaker 2: But then there's this I don't trust you. What can
- 52:44Speaker 2: I get away with? How much respect you got for yourself?
- 52:46Speaker 2: Can I say this and get away with this? How
- 52:48Speaker 2: far are you gonna let me go? Is that the
- 52:51Speaker 2: right thing to be doing? No, But that's some of
- 52:52Speaker 2: the unpacking on a surface level.
- 52:55Speaker 1: For damn. I'm kind of glad I addressed it because
- 52:57Speaker 1: I called today. I didn't know what that was, of course,
- 53:01Speaker 1: and so I did hang out with you during COVID.
- 53:04Speaker 1: I remember, Yeah, you cooked me a nice dinner. I
- 53:07Speaker 1: thought you were super dope, low key guys. Off the record,
- 53:09Speaker 1: I'm Loki wanted to date you, but then we hung
- 53:13Speaker 1: out and you were very respectful of me. I think
- 53:15Speaker 1: I even spent the night at his house and we
- 53:19Speaker 1: didn't smash. We didn't smash, and I thought that was awesome.
- 53:21Speaker 1: I was like, he's really respectful. I don't even know
- 53:23Speaker 1: why I stayed, but I mean not saying it like that,
- 53:27Speaker 1: but I don't know how I ended up sleeping there.
- 53:29Speaker 1: But it wasn't. The intention obviously wasn't that. I'm just
- 53:31Speaker 1: saying very hospitable. But then you would say things abound
- 53:35Speaker 1: me and I'm like, like, is this dude a nutbag?
- 53:38Speaker 1: Like respect hospitable. So that's why I was saying, you
- 53:42Speaker 1: must have a nervous tick. But that nervous tick was
- 53:46Speaker 1: like as a person.
- 53:47Speaker 2: I was like, like, for you, it's like I get
- 53:50Speaker 2: the fuck away from. So you actually wanted to bring
- 53:52Speaker 2: this up because this was something you was trying to
- 53:54Speaker 2: understand what happened back, No, we hung out. This really
- 53:57Speaker 2: wasn't just trying.
- 53:58Speaker 1: To because I genuine think you're a dope person and
- 54:02Speaker 1: it can be. And I'm glad you explained that for
- 54:05Speaker 1: even just all women to know this, because you know,
- 54:09Speaker 1: and I get the poking because me and I tell
- 54:11Speaker 1: girls guys have disclaimers. The guy will. You'll be at
- 54:13Speaker 1: a party and a guy be like, would you have
- 54:15Speaker 1: sex with a dog or something something crazy, and you'd
- 54:17Speaker 1: be like, as a woman, you got to just be
- 54:19Speaker 1: able to walk away from you know what I mean,
- 54:21Speaker 1: that's crazy trying to but you know how they'll test you,
- 54:25Speaker 1: like would you have a threesome?
- 54:26Speaker 2: You know, And there's two sides of that. There's like
- 54:31Speaker 2: there's the we have a threesome like maybe I can
- 54:34Speaker 2: her and her friend, yeah, And then there's a threesome
- 54:36Speaker 2: like I don't really want to have a kid with her, yeah.
- 54:38Speaker 1: Or or like when I always feel like when a
- 54:40Speaker 1: guy does that, it is such a disrespectful thing that
- 54:44Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, you're trying to test me, Well, here's
- 54:46Speaker 1: the test by deuces. So if I get any sense
- 54:50Speaker 1: of a disclaimer, I'm out because I'm not I'm not
- 54:53Speaker 1: with but we're grown. Yeah. But I just I say
- 54:58Speaker 1: that to say that it didn't for me. I didn't
- 55:00Speaker 1: align with the person I knew, and then those random
- 55:04Speaker 1: whatever the heck do you call them pops?
- 55:06Speaker 2: But also to like with me, there's a lot of
- 55:08Speaker 2: personality stuff. It's like a lot of women, and I'm
- 55:11Speaker 2: attracted to strong women, So there's that. I can't say
- 55:14Speaker 2: a weak women don't do it for me. I walk
- 55:15Speaker 2: all over you. I get bored because I'm I'm strong.
- 55:19Speaker 2: I've been fighting my whole life. I need somebody that
- 55:21Speaker 2: can help lift me when I'm down, which I don't
- 55:24Speaker 2: want to say isn't often.
- 55:25Speaker 1: But you know, every like everybody, everybody has everybody.
- 55:28Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's what I'm saying. It's like, let's stop
- 55:30Speaker 2: the tough talk shit. Everybody you know, everybody has their things.
- 55:32Speaker 2: So there's that. But I'm also self like, very like
- 55:38Speaker 2: I'm attracted to strong women like slick mouth. I like
- 55:41Speaker 2: my women a little snak. What slick mouth like my
- 55:44Speaker 2: women a little stak? Yeah, Like like I don't want
- 55:47Speaker 2: every dude that says HI to you for you to
- 55:50Speaker 2: be fucking friendly with you. Don't need to be friendly
- 55:52Speaker 2: to everybody, like be a little stank because I know men,
- 55:56Speaker 2: how you doing and you're attractive? Fuck now I gotta do.
- 55:59Speaker 2: And I've the short white kid my whole life that's
- 56:01Speaker 2: predominantly dated Latin women and things that, so I've been
- 56:05Speaker 2: tested my whole life in that area. So but date
- 56:09Speaker 2: strong women. Y'all talk shit. That's who slick mouth. And
- 56:13Speaker 2: I got a lot of slick mouth too, so you're
- 56:15Speaker 2: gonna get that slick talk right back.
- 56:16Speaker 1: Yeah. But I just I'm glad that we did identify
- 56:19Speaker 1: your one little minor, not even a flaw. I just
- 56:24Speaker 1: want to say the one thing that was a little offsetting, right,
- 56:28Speaker 1: I do say some crazy shit identified the room. It's
- 56:30Speaker 1: And it's funny because for me, I always feel like
- 56:33Speaker 1: it's gonna be so so ignorant. I always be like,
- 56:36Speaker 1: women don't cheat. That's hearing this ship though, I'm like, oh.
- 56:41Speaker 2: Well, And the part is then it carries on further,
- 56:44Speaker 2: you know, because yeah, sure that's the idea of what
- 56:46Speaker 2: I based what a woman's supposed to be about. Right,
- 56:50Speaker 2: So then then get into the relationships and things that
- 56:54Speaker 2: I dealt with personally growing up. So then it's like,
- 56:58Speaker 2: you know, it's all these things and now granted, this
- 57:00Speaker 2: is all stuff that as you grow older you become
- 57:04Speaker 2: self aware. You start realizing, like you said, tick, why
- 57:06Speaker 2: do I do this? And a lot of its defense
- 57:08Speaker 2: mechanisms things that and whatnot. So it's like me, you
- 57:13Speaker 2: can always tell there's always some truth in my jokes always, always,
- 57:17Speaker 2: doesn't matter how much of a joke it is, there's
- 57:20Speaker 2: something hidden in that. Motherfucker is like, eh, I'm actually
- 57:22Speaker 2: not joking, and then being self aware enough to know
- 57:28Speaker 2: that I'm I'm always like trying to create laughed laughing
- 57:32Speaker 2: when things become uncomfortable creating jokes.
- 57:35Speaker 1: Yeah, well all right now that whosos? I hope my
- 57:39Speaker 1: whole couples have. Well, anyways, let's go. Let's catch up
- 57:46Speaker 1: to where you're at now.
- 57:48Speaker 2: All right, So right now doing multiple things actually, So
- 57:55Speaker 2: actually run a club in Hollywood's Hollywood Apartment two hundred,
- 58:00Speaker 2: which I'm one of the gms over there, which I
- 58:02Speaker 2: ended up doing on accident, same way I ended up
- 58:05Speaker 2: in radio on accident. And I've been doing that for
- 58:08Speaker 2: a few months, which has been great because it's introduced
- 58:11Speaker 2: me to i mean, a week ago, Scissor was there.
- 58:15Speaker 2: So it's like it's opened up the door for some
- 58:17Speaker 2: relationships that I haven't been able to foster just by
- 58:21Speaker 2: being out and about, especially because I'm not a big
- 58:25Speaker 2: club guy, Like I'm over that shit. I'm grown. I'd
- 58:27Speaker 2: rather sit home, say some offensive shit and take a nap,
- 58:32Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. But and then a lot
- 58:37Speaker 2: of sync film stuff, like there's a one of Skid
- 58:41Speaker 2: Bear Bailey that we just did a couple of records
- 58:43Speaker 2: for that for bats manager is getting behind I have
- 58:47Speaker 2: a placement with I can't get in the specifics per
- 58:52Speaker 2: se right now, but there's a movie coming out in
- 58:59Speaker 2: the next few month that you but.
- 59:01Speaker 1: Let's you know what, let's backtrack, Let's go back to
- 59:03Speaker 1: House Party. Okay, you got a placement in House Party, right?
- 59:06Speaker 1: How did you acquire that?
- 59:08Speaker 2: So that's funny. That record is actually me and my
- 59:11Speaker 2: guy Reezy Tunes in Good June. Good June is a
- 59:14Speaker 2: part of the group Overdose that's from out here. Cal
- 59:17Speaker 2: Maddock used to be Overdose's manager, so they're all friends,
- 59:21Speaker 2: grew up in La together, and we had done that
- 59:25Speaker 2: record like two years prior. So. This record was sitting
- 59:29Speaker 2: as a demo on my studio computer at my house
- 59:33Speaker 2: and June hit me and was like, Yo, I'm doing
- 59:35Speaker 2: this thing. And it was during the pandemic. He's like, Yo,
- 59:36Speaker 2: I'm doing this thing. I'm gonna I'm gonna perform this live.
- 59:40Speaker 2: Can you send me I'm like cool, send it to him.
- 59:42Speaker 2: He does his live performance of this and then hits
- 59:46Speaker 2: me the next day. It was like, Yo, I'm about
- 59:47Speaker 2: to put you in touch with this music supervisor. They
- 59:51Speaker 2: want this for this movie. So that was just sheer,
- 59:58Speaker 2: like god working real relationships. This a dope record, right timing,
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: right person saw it, and none of us have publishing deals.
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: We're all out of our shit. Nobody was tied to anything.
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: So we did. We brokeer that whole thing independently.
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: Wow.
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: So and then that was even crazy because originally it
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: was supposed to go direct to I think HBO Max
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: or whatever it was at the time, and because of
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: the pandemic, things kept getting punted, they're pushing things back.
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: Then there was a merger, so it was one point
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: where like, oh, we're not even getting it, Like yeah,
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: it's not like they're not even going to put the
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: movie out anymore. And then now, mind you, we did
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: all the deal for a direct to streaming was the
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: whole deal. So it wasn't a bunch, It wasn't a
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: ton of money, but great. Look then we get word
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: that they're actually going to do a theatrical release, so
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: we're like, oh shit, so and I was thinking we
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: about that, like oh we about it? No, because we
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: had already had done the deal for this other situation,
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: so it was like what we got was what we got.
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: There'll be some royalties, but the film royalties are completely different.
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: Fortunately we still own the master, but the record didn't
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: take off on the film. But it was fucking dope.
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: Got to go to the premiere here like great experience.
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: But it's like, and there's a bunch of things like that.
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: I've had a couple of things in power a couple
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: of the Power shows and you know, Mike Tyson, But
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: how do.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: Those when you get those placements, Like do the checks be?
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: Can you give us a ballpark of how decent they are?
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: They all vary. That's the thing. What the check is
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: that you get and what the actual budget for the
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: song is depending on who the person is connecting the
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: dots can be two different worlds. And that's what I
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: was saying before.
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: So it seems though it seems like you're always I
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: used to call it like I used to always sell
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: my dad. It's like I'm really hungry and it's just
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: like thin glass between me and a steak, and for
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: whatever reason, I can't break through this glass, but I
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: can see it. I can't even smell it. And I
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: always used to be like, man, it's like so close
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: but also impossible to break this damn glass.
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: But you but you gonna get it. Yeah, you ain't stopping.
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: And that's how. And it's funny because people like it's
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: because it goes correlates back to what you asked me
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: earlier about, like the music, what's it like? How do
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: you keep going? And it was like, I've been asked
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: that sort of thing because I've had so many almost
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: moments and I've had some small ones, had some bigger ones,
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: you know, and it's like they're like, what's it I've
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: been asked, what's it like? I'm like, well, imagine waking
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: up confessing. I woke up, came do you confess to you?
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: I fucking love you? You are everything I need. You
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: look at me and say you're not good enough? Get
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: up and do it again tomorrow, and get up and
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: do it again, and get up and keep doing it
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: until finally you know what you are good enough. That's
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: what a lot of it's like, because you're always chasing
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: the acceptance in the approval. Yeah, or at least I am.
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: I don't know, I don't know.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: Yeah, there's an artist I think his name is Russell
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: or russ Rush, Yeah, and he had a book. I
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: put it on my book list. I like to read
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: a lot, but I had read a couple of pages
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: out of his book and he talked about that in
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: his books, and I thought it was like it was interesting.
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: I was like, man, are we seeking this outside validation?
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: And it was crazy because he talks about once.
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: He got it, that it wasn't what you thought it was.
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: It wasn't like literally didn't cure any depression or anything
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: he was dealing with, and he had to, like obviously
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: end up. Everyone wants to say that the quote unquote
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: you know, you gotta work and you don't battle these
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: demons internally first or whatever, but shout outs to him.
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: But I did read a couple of pages and I
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: was like, you know what, I think I'm gonna check
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: out his book because I would hate to constantly feel
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: like what you just described just to get to the
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: end goal, right to end up what he described, you know.
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: But I mean that's one of the things where I
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: guess that comes along with the saying where everybody's like
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: money doesn't you know, buy happiness, and it's like, well,
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: I'd like to first of all find that out for
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: my fucking self. Let's start there, all right, And how
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: often do you see somebody on a jet ski not smiling?
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: Well, I agree, I can't agree on. I can agree
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: on it's weird because I have a nice, cool balance
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: of friends. I have some friends that are millionaires, and
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: then I have friends that are broke and I got
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: I definitely have a buffet of different option of friends.
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: But like I just try to just all from New York.
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: None of them are native La.
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: Right, No, they're all there's something from it.
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: You know. You're right.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: I do have more friends from my way, but I do,
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: and a matter of fact, now I think about it,
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: some of them do write almost as hard as my
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: New York.
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: She just can't give it. You can't just you can't
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: give it though, well he's almost you just can't give
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: it to them.
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: It's okay, man, I ain't nothing like a day one er. Man.
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: You can give it to him. It's okay, New York.
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: And I'm gonna hate you because you love La.
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: Let me tell you something. A couple of years ago.
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: It's so weird. I have two best friends that went
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: to two different. I went to two different high schools,
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: and for whatever reason, every time I go to New York,
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: I always kept up separate. And one year I was
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: hanging out with Tia and I brought her to New
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: York with me and uh and I put two of
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: my best friends in the first time ever. And I
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: don't know why it never occurred to me before, but
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: now it's like a squad of three of us. I'm like, bitch,
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: you never had to like divide your time between these
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: two girls. You could have had them all at the
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: same time the life.
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: And sharing their friendship. And that's the thing.
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: But that's awesome now where our group.
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: That's what I'm talking about. The circle. You gotta find
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: your circle no matter where you go. And it's like
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: you're gonna attract the sort of people that you are.
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: So it's like, that's why I attract smart ass, smart
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: mouth ass women because I'm a smart mouth me. Because
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: because you're a smart as you got a smart ass mouth.
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: You say, you say some slick What the fuck do
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: you just say to me? Ship too? Okay, it ain't
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: just me, trust and believe.
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: Lately, I've been realizing my smartest mouth because.
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: Oh you got yourself in some trouble. See, I got
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: all that trouble out early, so I knew happened yesterday.
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: I said, oh, man, you need to chill out before
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: you in a bad situation. I had a rough situation
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: last night where it was like, you may have to
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: learn a lesson from this.
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: One's always something to be learned.
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: But okay, I'm gonna We're gonna probably close out because
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: I know we went over time. But I do want
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: to circle back to the one question that I know
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: everybody asked. But seeing your journey has been all of bumpy,
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: all of bumpy, or what advice would you honestly give
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: your younger self for the road ahead?
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: Mmmm, It's gonna be okay, no matter how bad it
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: No matter how bad it gets, everything's temporary, money, love,
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: fucking life, it's all temporary. Feelings are temporary. When you
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: feel like you're at like it's over, it's not over.
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: Take a couple of naps, push through it, and it's
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: gonna like you can't be happy without being sad.
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I've got into the place at forty. I
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: tell people all the time, Man, I don't pursue happiness.
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: I can give a crap about happiness. I'm all about peace.
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: Give me a flat line all day. I'm good with it.
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: Like I realized that on the other side of happiness
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: is the polar opposite, and I'll stay. I will gladly
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: not ride the roller coaster and just take the train.
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: I mean, I hear you because it sounds good. And
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: that's the stability and knowing yourself and how you react
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: to things and how to handle your feelings because unfortunately
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: you ain't in control of your happiness and sadness all
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: the time.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: Yeah, is what it is.
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: There's things way beyond your control that are gonna fuck
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: with your piece.
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: So damn smoggers. You speaking real mature.
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: Yeah, you it's just it's just you know, just I've
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: been through some ship, you know.
- 1:08:20Speaker 4: It just is what it is.
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: This is a therapy. That's what I always wanted. I
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: always wanted to do a I think if we talked
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: about it once and I said, I want to do
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: a podcast called free Therapy here if you want, that's
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: one more fucking thing I gotta do. Do you how
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: much I will work like eighteen hours a day as
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: it is.
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: It's up to you tell people how they could keep
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: up with Nickel Fields.
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: Well, you can catch me on you know, all social
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: media stuff Nickel Fields N I K A L F
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: I E L d Z. You can text me at
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: ha ha fooled you. I mean that's really it.
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: You could text me how high fooled you? Yeah, that's hilarious.
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: Yeah hah, I'm a fool.
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: Yet not. I mean that's really it's you know, I'm not.
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: I'm not. I'm not hard to find, not that hard
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: to find. That's why I have to start watching my
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: big mouth, because what would be some.
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: Of the pieces of advice would you give to someone
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: else that is seeking to get placement and move met
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: movies or writing credits.
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: Get out of the bedroom, get out of the like
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: you can't like you want to spend time owning your
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: craft and developing it in the studio and things of
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: that nature. But you see it all the time. It's
- 1:09:28Speaker 2: it's all about the network. It's all about who you
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: know you can you can wrap dog shit and tendfoil
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: and market it properly, which and it's it's the sad truth,
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: you know, it is what it is. So it's like,
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: don't do it for the right reasons. As far as
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: the music stuff you gotta eat like this, it's not
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: everybody looks at the glimmer and glit side of it,
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: but it's a lonely road, yeah, even you know. And
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: they say it's lonely at the top, you know, And
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: my only thing with that is, I think it's only
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: lonely at the top. If you forget to bring to
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: people with you, or you forget who helped you get there,
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: then it's only at the top.
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I could see that. That's that's a great nugget. Yeah,
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: So all right, y'all, Well, thank you for feeding me.
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: Red beans. Rice tastes good, definitely for balling on a budget.
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: It's a good meal. It's a good meal, not bad
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: at all.
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: Especially put some hot sauce on it. Yeah, you need
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: the hot sauce.
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: The red hot definitely helped it. Thank y'all for tuning in,
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: piece out.
