- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with Gino Boome game this week. Of course, you
- 0:02Speaker 1: got Marquette coming up on Saturday. But six games left
- 0:06Speaker 1: now in the regular season. You got Creighton, you got Marquette,
- 0:10Speaker 1: and next week it is Villanova at Villanova and then
- 0:15Speaker 1: Senior Day against George against Providence, then Georgetown and Saint
- 0:19Speaker 1: John's and that's it. Yeah, we're down the stretch here.
- 0:22Speaker 1: When you get to this point of the season, obviously,
- 0:25Speaker 1: practices are not nearly as long as they are during
- 0:27Speaker 1: the early part of the season. Maybe maybe an hour
- 0:30Speaker 1: if that, depending on what you've got roster wise. Health.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Yeah, it depends. I mean certainly, you know they're not
- 0:38Speaker 2: as they're not as as long as they are, and
- 0:42Speaker 2: you know November December, you know, they just get shorter
- 0:46Speaker 2: each each month probably, and uh, there's you know, there's
- 0:52Speaker 2: fewer things that you have to spend a lot of
- 0:55Speaker 2: time on and hopefully you know your players are at
- 1:00Speaker 2: a point where you just need to review a couple
- 1:02Speaker 2: of things, and you know there may be some things
- 1:05Speaker 2: that you want to do a little bit differently for
- 1:07Speaker 2: the second time around, that kind of thing. But yeah,
- 1:11Speaker 2: at this time of the year, they they really they
- 1:16Speaker 2: just want to play games. They don't really want to
- 1:18Speaker 2: spend a lot of time at practice, and you really
- 1:22Speaker 2: do want to be you know, really really fresh, come
- 1:25Speaker 2: come March. I mean you still have to go hard,
- 1:27Speaker 2: Don't get me wrong, You still have to go you know,
- 1:32Speaker 2: the intensity level has to be really high. It just
- 1:35Speaker 2: isn't going to be anywhere near as as long as
- 1:39Speaker 2: it is, you know guy.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Yeah, when we get to the postseason, and I know
- 1:45Speaker 1: you talked about this, I think on Saturday your post players,
- 1:49Speaker 1: Sarah and Jenna particularly needing to be more assertive, more aggressive.
- 1:54Speaker 1: What do you like, What have you seen in a
- 1:56Speaker 1: positive way about their development lately. I mean, Jenna had
- 1:59Speaker 1: the concussion and she was starting to get on a
- 2:02Speaker 1: roll before the concussion, and now she's trying to build back.
- 2:04Speaker 1: And Sarah, I mean, yeah, we're in the February now,
- 2:08Speaker 1: it seems like you're seeing more out of her. Certainly
- 2:11Speaker 1: had a good second half against Tennessee amongst all the team,
- 2:14Speaker 1: all the players that had a great second half, But
- 2:16Speaker 1: noticeably Sarah has has seemingly been a little more assertive
- 2:19Speaker 1: in the post recently.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I think we're where they have to make a
- 2:28Speaker 2: case for themselves. Is you know, we have an advantage
- 2:35Speaker 2: over most people on the perimeter. You know, our premier
- 2:41Speaker 2: play is really really good, and we shoot the ball
- 2:45Speaker 2: really well most nights. So our one vulnerability is people
- 2:52Speaker 2: getting to the basket against us, people offensive rebounding against us.
- 3:01Speaker 2: So I think where we're going to need them to
- 3:04Speaker 2: be really, really really good is we've got to be
- 3:09Speaker 2: able to take away people's layups. You know, we've got
- 3:12Speaker 2: to have a presence in there, and you know, we've
- 3:16Speaker 2: got a rebound the ball on the defensive end. I
- 3:18Speaker 2: think that the first half of the and obviously the
- 3:23Speaker 2: fouling part, you know, that's everybody. I think the first
- 3:26Speaker 2: half against Tennessee, you know, that whole second quarter, you know,
- 3:31Speaker 2: they were either shooting wide open some wide open shots
- 3:35Speaker 2: and shooting free throws, and the entire second half, I
- 3:38Speaker 2: don't think they attempted a free throw, you know. So
- 3:40Speaker 2: it's not like we don't know how. It's just, you know,
- 3:44Speaker 2: we've got to be better at the things that we
- 3:47Speaker 2: can control, you know. So the other thing is I
- 3:52Speaker 2: think they work. They make life a little bit too
- 3:56Speaker 2: hard for themselves. You know, like first half the other
- 4:00Speaker 2: day Saturday, we were down the other end away from
- 4:07Speaker 2: our bench, and we throw the ball in the post
- 4:09Speaker 2: and Jenna catches it, turns around, lays the ball up
- 4:12Speaker 2: like like there's no defense at all, just turn lay
- 4:18Speaker 2: it up. Then down at our end she catches the
- 4:22Speaker 2: ball and there's four people gardener and she's elbowing three
- 4:24Speaker 2: of them trying to get the shot up, you know,
- 4:26Speaker 2: and then it becomes like, you know, something that looks
- 4:29Speaker 2: like why like why make things that are really easy
- 4:33Speaker 2: look really hard? You know, you catch it, you turn around,
- 4:36Speaker 2: you lay it up, you catch it, there's two guys there,
- 4:38Speaker 2: you throw it back out and we shoot it in
- 4:40Speaker 2: your offensive remount. So I think sometimes they're so anxious
- 4:45Speaker 2: to like they want to score, they want to score,
- 4:48Speaker 2: that they make life really really difficult for themselves. And
- 4:52Speaker 2: you know, so the fact that our our perimeter players
- 4:57Speaker 2: or our strength, you know, every time one of those
- 5:00Speaker 2: that's a great screen, we get a bucket. I mean
- 5:03Speaker 2: you see that, you know, every game. Yeah, so you know,
- 5:09Speaker 2: we got to just keep working at it and keep
- 5:12Speaker 2: working at it and making sure that one they stay
- 5:15Speaker 2: out of fout trouble and two you know, they help
- 5:18Speaker 2: protect the basket and limit teams to one shot.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Basically, Yeah, two players that have really stood out recently,
- 5:25Speaker 1: and you can see the progression obviously, Ali, I mean, yeah, okay,
- 5:28Speaker 1: she scored thirty four and hit ten threes in a
- 5:30Speaker 1: one game. But she's been pretty consistent over the last
- 5:33Speaker 1: five or six games. And the progression that Kallie Heckle's given, you,
- 5:36Speaker 1: like say, over the last one, you can sense more confidence,
- 5:41Speaker 1: more comfort knowing what she's what her role is here,
- 5:44Speaker 1: and she's taking the ball and run with it.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Yeah. Again, it takes, you know, it takes a little
- 5:49Speaker 2: bit of time for new players to find their way.
- 5:55Speaker 2: You know. Katy Heckle, to use her as an example,
- 6:01Speaker 2: is the kind of athlete that can can run by
- 6:08Speaker 2: you because she's incredibly quick and incredibly fast, and she's
- 6:13Speaker 2: got an explosiveness to her, but she can change direction quickly,
- 6:19Speaker 2: you know. And I think that when she's got the
- 6:22Speaker 2: ball in the open floor and she's going that's why
- 6:25Speaker 2: she gets so many offensive rebounds. You know, she's she's
- 6:29Speaker 2: just really athletic and really powerful, so that as she's
- 6:35Speaker 2: gotten more comfortable, you know, she's just starting to use
- 6:37Speaker 2: that more often and and she's getting a lot more minutes.
- 6:42Speaker 2: You know, that's the one if there is any sort
- 6:45Speaker 2: of kind of upside of you know, Blanca not playing,
- 6:48Speaker 2: is these other guards get more minutes, you know, so
- 6:51Speaker 2: the more time they get, the more comfortable they get,
- 6:54Speaker 2: the more things they can do. But yeah, I've said,
- 6:59Speaker 2: I just said recently, our three three players, Sarah Easy
- 7:05Speaker 2: Blanca have to play great in the NC tournament for
- 7:08Speaker 2: us to go where we want to go. But it's
- 7:11Speaker 2: really going to come down to can those other guys
- 7:14Speaker 2: Ali ash Kka thatck goal you know, you know, Sarah
- 7:22Speaker 2: Williams or Jenno whoever. Can they all do the things
- 7:28Speaker 2: they're really really good at, because that's what ends up
- 7:32Speaker 2: winning the game for you.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Yeah. I think in one of the pregames we talked
- 7:35Speaker 1: about this, you know, doing your role you may you know,
- 7:37Speaker 1: you mentioned the first three, but the other folks seem
- 7:41Speaker 1: to be in a good comfort zone knowing what their
- 7:43Speaker 1: role is.
- 7:43Speaker 2: And you need that.
- 7:44Speaker 1: You just can't have a whole group of superstars.
- 7:48Speaker 2: No no, And teams have tried to do that, and
- 7:50Speaker 2: then people step on each other's toes, they getting each
- 7:53Speaker 2: other's way, and everybody wants to score. Everybody's give me,
- 7:58Speaker 2: give me the ball, you know, and it just doesn't work,
- 8:00Speaker 2: doesn't work. And and yet at the same time, you know,
- 8:03Speaker 2: all these kids were really really good high school players,
- 8:06Speaker 2: and they all want to shoot, they all want to score,
- 8:08Speaker 2: they all want they're all getting yelled at by their
- 8:10Speaker 2: parents for not shooting enough, you know, and you know
- 8:14Speaker 2: whoever their agents are telling them they're not shooting enough.
- 8:17Speaker 2: And and so it's a it's a it's a delicate balance,
- 8:21Speaker 2: you know, to be really really good. But you know,
- 8:25Speaker 2: the whole secret of coaching is, you know, you've got
- 8:28Speaker 2: to you've got to make people understand that there's a
- 8:35Speaker 2: kind of a pecking order. There's a hierarchy of who's
- 8:40Speaker 2: the best player, who's the next best player, who's the
- 8:43Speaker 2: next best player, and all the way down the line,
- 8:46Speaker 2: and everybody's got to do what they're really, really really
- 8:49Speaker 2: good at. So if you're Sarah Strong and you're good
- 8:51Speaker 2: at pretty much everything there is to be good at
- 8:53Speaker 2: on the basketball court, then your role is going to
- 8:56Speaker 2: be like this big. And if you go down the list,
- 9:00Speaker 2: then you know your role is going to be this big.
- 9:02Speaker 2: But in this role, you got to be great because
- 9:05Speaker 2: if you're not any good in that role, then we're
- 9:09Speaker 2: not going to be as good a team as we
- 9:10Speaker 2: could be, no matter how good there is. So that's
- 9:14Speaker 2: the key in coaching is to find those kids that
- 9:16Speaker 2: are and that doesn't mean that that role is going
- 9:19Speaker 2: to be like that all year every game. Look at Ali,
- 9:23Speaker 2: her role was one thing. That other game it became
- 9:26Speaker 2: something completely different. You know, Blanca is not playing. Okay,
- 9:29Speaker 2: there's a lot of shots available, let me take them.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Then she made most of.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Them, and she made most of them. Yeah, exactly, Yeah,
- 9:34Speaker 2: all right.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Crate's next on the schedule, and if you haven't noticed,
- 9:37Speaker 1: they're vastly improved since we last saw them in January.
- 9:40Speaker 1: We'll get to that in a minute. We're live at
- 9:41Speaker 1: Cafe Are It's the Yukon Women's Basketball Coaches Show on Learfield.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Back in a minute.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Stay with us.
