Latest / Cardinal Territory: A St. Louis Cardinals Podcast / Winter Warm Up Preview: What's new with the Cards with one month before spring training
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome to episode nine of Cardinal Territory. I'm Katie Woo.
- 0:08Speaker 1: He's Trevor Rosenthal. Happy Winter warm up week. The event
- 0:12Speaker 1: of the year, or at least the off season. Probably
- 0:16Speaker 1: it is the Cardinals maybe unofficial start to baseball season.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Nothing says baseball like still on the ground and single
- 0:24Speaker 1: digit temperatures in Saint Louis. But we are excited to
- 0:27Speaker 1: reunite with the organization this weekend. Anyway, Trevor, how.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Are you, Hey, Katie. I'm doing great. Good to see
- 0:34Speaker 2: you as always. Yeah, I'm excited for this weekend. It's
- 0:39Speaker 2: finally here. I got something to look forward to. We
- 0:42Speaker 2: got the big event going to be in Saint Louis
- 0:44Speaker 2: and see a lot of familiar faces, which I'm looking
- 0:47Speaker 2: forward to.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm eagerly anticipating having at least I'll know I'll
- 0:52Speaker 1: have something to write. I mean, this offseason has been
- 0:55Speaker 1: so slow. I talked about this last episode. I was
- 0:57Speaker 1: like aggressively chasing arbitration rumor, which is a ridiculous thing
- 1:01Speaker 1: to do. It's ridiculous to like be like, oh, is
- 1:04Speaker 1: this guy maybe going to get a contract or what's
- 1:06Speaker 1: he going to make for his one year? Because I
- 1:08Speaker 1: just hadn't done that in a while, and I was like,
- 1:11Speaker 1: I feel going through our athletics Slack channel every day.
- 1:15Speaker 1: All of these beat writers have such talented stuff. Their
- 1:18Speaker 1: stories are so good, such in depth reporting on all
- 1:21Speaker 1: their signings, and I'm like the person at the like
- 1:24Speaker 1: the group party or whatever, the group project I should say,
- 1:27Speaker 1: that doesn't contribute anything, and it's just kind of there.
- 1:30Speaker 1: So we always get these messages from our bosses like
- 1:32Speaker 1: great job, team, like this our baseball vertical just continues
- 1:35Speaker 1: to crush, and I'm like, yeah, yeah, we do. I'm
- 1:38Speaker 1: not doing anything, but the rest of you guys are
- 1:39Speaker 1: doing great, so we'll be all.
- 1:41Speaker 2: A little envious of the rest of the market. I'm
- 1:46Speaker 2: there with you. I'm there with you. I can't wait
- 1:49Speaker 2: for us to have some really good content to discuss
- 1:52Speaker 2: on this show, because I mean, we are going to
- 1:55Speaker 2: bring it here at Cardinal Territory. We just need this
- 1:58Speaker 2: substance to go along with it. We go and do
- 2:01Speaker 2: we go and carry it so far, I know we.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Can only kind of bes for so long. We need
- 2:06Speaker 1: actual substance to talk about otherwise, Like I don't I
- 2:09Speaker 1: don't know, I don't even want to think about what
- 2:11Speaker 1: we get into if this continues. So at least we
- 2:13Speaker 1: know this weekend we'll have a ton of I don't
- 2:17Speaker 1: want to say news. I don't know if we're gonna
- 2:19Speaker 1: have actual news, but people are going to talk to us,
- 2:21Speaker 1: so that is exciting. Interviews, press conferences, hopefully much be great.
- 2:27Speaker 2: I love you. Had Bernie on last week. I was
- 2:29Speaker 2: listening to him and he referred to me, or he
- 2:31Speaker 2: referred to himself as being under me in the context
- 2:34Speaker 2: of coming on the show, and I was like, Bernie, like,
- 2:38Speaker 2: you are the expert here. I am I'm trying to
- 2:40Speaker 2: learn from you. So I appreciate him giving me a
- 2:43Speaker 2: couple of shout outs. That was fun to listen to,
- 2:45Speaker 2: and of course he is. He's always fun to listen.
- 2:48Speaker 2: He does a great job. He knows the Cardinals inside
- 2:50Speaker 2: it out. So great guys. You guys did a good
- 2:52Speaker 2: job last week.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Thank you. We'll have to get uh, we'll have to
- 2:56Speaker 1: do all three of us on our next episode because
- 2:58Speaker 1: I definitely plan on having Bernie back. He was great. Yeah,
- 3:03Speaker 1: let's get into it before we talk about all things
- 3:05Speaker 1: winn and warm up again. So exciting. We did have
- 3:07Speaker 1: a little bit of news Andrew Kittridge was not expected
- 3:12Speaker 1: to come back to the Cardinals this season. Twenty twenty five. Oh,
- 3:16Speaker 1: I got rid of Trevor. Oh my gosh, I'm doing
- 3:18Speaker 1: so bad with the video. There we go, I'm good
- 3:22Speaker 1: three times a charm. Andrew Kittridge has signed a one year,
- 3:26Speaker 1: ten million dollars deal with the Baltimore Orioles. Again, he
- 3:28Speaker 1: was not expected to be brought back to the organization,
- 3:32Speaker 1: but still a significant departure. Nonetheless, when you think about
- 3:35Speaker 1: what Kittridge did for this Cardinal's bullpen last year, one
- 3:39Speaker 1: of the most efficient and reliable bullpens in the National League,
- 3:42Speaker 1: and he was right up there and holds leaders among
- 3:44Speaker 1: the National League believers as well. Trevor, what are your
- 3:48Speaker 1: thoughts on this signing? First of all, a nice little
- 3:49Speaker 1: payday for Kittridge.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Yeah, you love to see that. You know. It's it's
- 3:54Speaker 2: not easy to make that type of money being the
- 3:57Speaker 2: bullpen and especially as a setup guy. So good for him.
- 4:01Speaker 2: I'm super happy for him. And my favorite thing, or
- 4:04Speaker 2: I guess how I got introduced to Andrew Kittridge, is
- 4:08Speaker 2: of him being referred to as the drunk Uncle because
- 4:10Speaker 2: of his pitching mechanics on Twitter. So those those responses
- 4:15Speaker 2: spurred up again with this signing, and it's fun to
- 4:17Speaker 2: see that. But you know, a great pitcher and a
- 4:21Speaker 2: guy that's gonna be hard to replace. I mean there's
- 4:24Speaker 2: some that's a lot of innings, a lot of solid
- 4:28Speaker 2: innings that are gonna have to be replaced in one
- 4:30Speaker 2: way or another this year.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Yeah, that's funny what you say about Kittridge's mechanics, because
- 4:35Speaker 1: the first time he came out, my dad who my
- 4:38Speaker 1: dad is on West Coast like love the Giants and
- 4:40Speaker 1: aise growing up, but religiously watches the Cardinals, so because
- 4:45Speaker 1: he just I mean, it's all we talk about is baseball.
- 4:47Speaker 1: So the first time Kittridge comes out of the bullpen,
- 4:50Speaker 1: my dad goes, this guy looks like he should be
- 4:52Speaker 1: playing like adult league softball with his mechanics. It's so easy.
- 4:56Speaker 1: And he loved Andrew Kittridge from that, like, so I
- 5:00Speaker 1: don't know, it's still effortless, and I'm like, how is
- 5:02Speaker 1: this guy throwing gas? He litle looks like he could
- 5:04Speaker 1: go be like across the street playing like a pickup
- 5:06Speaker 1: sooftball game. So we will miss that, and I think
- 5:09Speaker 1: Cardinals fans will miss that presence. But the good news
- 5:11Speaker 1: is because it's January, we can still be optimist. Optimist,
- 5:15Speaker 1: I guess about the twenty twenty five season, there are
- 5:18Speaker 1: some internal candidates to replace Kittridge, Trevor. Who you got
- 5:22Speaker 1: Who are you looking at internally to take that next
- 5:24Speaker 1: step up in the bullpen?
- 5:26Speaker 2: Yeah? I mean when I look at the roster as
- 5:29Speaker 2: it stands right now, not a ton of household names
- 5:33Speaker 2: or names that would jump out. And you know, first
- 5:36Speaker 2: and foremost, to have a successful bullpen, it takes the
- 5:39Speaker 2: whole unit. You know, if you have multiple guys or
- 5:42Speaker 2: really every single guy that's contributing in a positive manner,
- 5:45Speaker 2: it goes It helps out everybody. It takes the stress
- 5:49Speaker 2: level off of everybody, not not just the team in general,
- 5:52Speaker 2: but the whole pitching staff. So it's going to be
- 5:55Speaker 2: a group effort. And it's nice that you have a
- 5:59Speaker 2: solid piece like Ryan Helsley, and I would say to
- 6:03Speaker 2: at the very minimum, I mean, you have two guys,
- 6:05Speaker 2: and for me, the way I look at it right now,
- 6:08Speaker 2: that second guy is most likely going to be Ryan Fernandez,
- 6:12Speaker 2: a guy that can pitch late in the game, pitching
- 6:15Speaker 2: big spots and and do it. Do a good job
- 6:18Speaker 2: and eat up some considerable innings. And beyond that, I mean,
- 6:21Speaker 2: the doors kind of open. There's definitely a lot of talent,
- 6:25Speaker 2: a lot of guys that I'm impressed with. I'm glad
- 6:28Speaker 2: that they have some good depth on the left handed
- 6:30Speaker 2: pitching side. I think that's gonna be a big help.
- 6:33Speaker 2: But again, we're gonna have a lot more to talk
- 6:36Speaker 2: about once we get into spring training. Right now, it's
- 6:39Speaker 2: it's for me a lot of question marks to be
- 6:42Speaker 2: answered behind beyond those those two guys, I.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Agree with you. Ryan Fernandez was the Rule five pick
- 6:48Speaker 1: last year. It is tough being a Rule five pick
- 6:50Speaker 1: because you have to post. If you don't, you're basically,
- 6:54Speaker 1: I mean, the Cardinals can't keep you. And if you're
- 6:55Speaker 1: at a Rule five pick, unless you're on the injured list,
- 6:57Speaker 1: you have to stay on the active roster all year long.
- 7:00Speaker 1: So it did complicate things from a roster construction standpoint, because,
- 7:04Speaker 1: as you know, in the bullpen, it's all about like, hey,
- 7:06Speaker 1: next man up, who is the freshest arm. But Fernandez
- 7:09Speaker 1: could have complicated things a lot more if he wasn't
- 7:12Speaker 1: as effective as he was, and he absolutely had a
- 7:15Speaker 1: great rookie campaign, and he's going to be factored in
- 7:18Speaker 1: for some of those high leverage spots. Jojo Romero, I
- 7:21Speaker 1: thought we also saw how to break out year last year.
- 7:24Speaker 1: He's a guy that's going to take the balls off
- 7:25Speaker 1: and as he can. Man, when you think about that
- 7:27Speaker 1: first half of the season, the Romero to Kittridge to
- 7:30Speaker 1: Hellesley pipeline, seventh, eighth, ninth inning. Every day those guys
- 7:35Speaker 1: posted and no one said no Kittridge would I don't
- 7:38Speaker 1: even know. I need to know, like his strength training plan,
- 7:41Speaker 1: his diet plan, because that dude was always down to
- 7:44Speaker 1: pitch and even when Olie Marma was like I need
- 7:47Speaker 1: to stay away from you, your kittridch was like, nah,
- 7:49Speaker 1: I'm fine. And you can see that kind of mentality
- 7:51Speaker 1: with Jojo too. But Cardinals fans they know these guys.
- 7:54Speaker 1: They saw them last year again, a really affective bullpen
- 7:57Speaker 1: for the club. I'm going to go with a name
- 7:59Speaker 1: that I think most fans will recognize, but we haven't
- 8:01Speaker 1: seen him too much at least to this point. I'm
- 8:04Speaker 1: going Gordon Groseppo. And here's my disclaimer. The Cardinals haven't
- 8:08Speaker 1: designated a role for him yet. I'm sure he'll come
- 8:10Speaker 1: to spring training as a starter, as they all do.
- 8:13Speaker 1: But if you're looking for someone that can bring high
- 8:16Speaker 1: radar in short bursts, I think that's Gordon Groseppo. The
- 8:20Speaker 1: biggest struggle he's had in his professional career is sustainability.
- 8:24Speaker 1: And as a starter, of course, you know, if you
- 8:25Speaker 1: go three innings and your stuff is great, awesome, but
- 8:29Speaker 1: we've seen griseppo stuff start to dip after the fourth inning,
- 8:32Speaker 1: after the fifth inning, where he's not as effective. If obviously,
- 8:36Speaker 1: I think the best situation would be for him to
- 8:38Speaker 1: figure out that that stuff, and maybe he has. That's
- 8:39Speaker 1: why we can talk about it. I wouldn't warm up
- 8:41Speaker 1: with him so exciting, but if that's not something that
- 8:44Speaker 1: he can he's been able to fix, If that's something
- 8:47Speaker 1: where he's more effective in short bursts, I would love
- 8:50Speaker 1: to see what he brings to the Cardinals bullpen. I
- 8:52Speaker 1: think we're going to see him get a shot to
- 8:54Speaker 1: make that major league club come spring training. But yeah,
- 8:57Speaker 1: the Cardinals are going to have to have some guys
- 8:59Speaker 1: step up. Chris Croft had a nice showing early on.
- 9:02Speaker 1: What are we gonna see from Riley O'Brien. He's been
- 9:04Speaker 1: this of the year hurt last year, there are names
- 9:07Speaker 1: to look at. They aren't household names like you said, Trevor,
- 9:09Speaker 1: but they are names nonetheless. So we'll be exciting to
- 9:12Speaker 1: see how that club replaces Andrew Kittridge, especially given them
- 9:16Speaker 1: how important and how critical frankly that bullpen was last year.
- 9:21Speaker 2: This is gonna sound bad, But how do you say
- 9:24Speaker 2: Kyle Lee Lee?
- 9:26Speaker 1: He lay he, don't worry. I mess with their names
- 9:29Speaker 1: all the time and I just guess and then they
- 9:31Speaker 1: tell me if it's wrong.
- 9:32Speaker 2: So it's good, lay he he. I'm excited about him.
- 9:36Speaker 2: You mentioned Riley O'Brien. He has some nasty stuff, So
- 9:40Speaker 2: I mean there's guys, there's some arms. When I was
- 9:42Speaker 2: doing some research preparing for this and watching video of
- 9:45Speaker 2: all the guys that they have to choose from, at
- 9:47Speaker 2: least on the forty man roster, there's options there, so
- 9:51Speaker 2: that to me is exciting. But like I said, it's
- 9:54Speaker 2: going to take everybody kind of piecing it together and
- 9:57Speaker 2: finding their stride, hopefully early in the season, and I'm
- 10:00Speaker 2: looking forward to that.
- 10:02Speaker 1: The good news is Ryan Helsley, most likely like ninety
- 10:05Speaker 1: nine percent, is going to be back on himself a
- 10:07Speaker 1: nice payday and nice raise. Well, deserved. It is some
- 10:10Speaker 1: comforting when you're going to have a younger bullpen, most
- 10:13Speaker 1: likely to have a veteran presence, someone who's really commanded
- 10:16Speaker 1: last season as one of baseball's best relievers locking down
- 10:20Speaker 1: your ninth inning. So I'm excited to see what Ryan
- 10:23Speaker 1: Helsley has to say about his off season as well.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Let's get to it. Let's get to the main event.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Win a warm up preview, because that's where we're at
- 10:30Speaker 1: at this point in the off season. Trumvor, this is
- 10:32Speaker 1: your first Winner warm up as an alum.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Correct, that is correct, Katie, first one in a while.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Haven't experienced the Winner warm up in a while. So
- 10:42Speaker 2: for me, like that's it's something as a player you
- 10:47Speaker 2: got excited about because at this point, you've you've had
- 10:51Speaker 2: three months in the off season and you've been working hard,
- 10:54Speaker 2: and you're excited to, you know, see the rest of
- 10:56Speaker 2: the guys, see what their progress has been in the
- 10:58Speaker 2: off season. It's kind of funny because during this week
- 11:03Speaker 2: during the winter warm up, when you see guys, you'll
- 11:04Speaker 2: see the guy who maybe lost twenty pounds, You'll see
- 11:08Speaker 2: the guy who maybe gained twenty pounds, and so there's
- 11:10Speaker 2: a lot of uh, you know, conversation that comes up
- 11:13Speaker 2: after you're able to kind of see everybody in person.
- 11:15Speaker 2: But I mean, aside from that, aside from seeing your
- 11:19Speaker 2: teammates and the staff and the coaches, it's always good
- 11:23Speaker 2: to see, especially in Saint Louis. I mean the support,
- 11:26Speaker 2: the support personnel. They're the people that help the most
- 11:30Speaker 2: to make you know, make it easy for the players
- 11:33Speaker 2: to get on the field and you know, all the
- 11:35Speaker 2: behind the scenes stuff that you don't see. And for me,
- 11:37Speaker 2: I always had a great appreciation for these people, and
- 11:40Speaker 2: and so it's it's touching base with them, asking them,
- 11:43Speaker 2: you know, how how their winter has been, how the
- 11:45Speaker 2: holidays have been, checking in on how their families are doing,
- 11:48Speaker 2: and that I'm excited for that as well. I'm sure
- 11:50Speaker 2: even today, I don't know how many years it's been
- 11:52Speaker 2: since I was at the winter warm up, but I'm
- 11:54Speaker 2: sure I'm gonna see a lot of those people as well.
- 11:57Speaker 2: But even even you know, we talked about the writers
- 12:01Speaker 2: Dinner coming up in the nineteen eighty five NL Championship team,
- 12:06Speaker 2: seeing those guys, seeing the Red Jacket Hall of Fame
- 12:09Speaker 2: players for you know, the Cardinal Hall of Fame players
- 12:13Speaker 2: that is exciting as well, and it's weird now being
- 12:17Speaker 2: an alum and kind of being put into that category.
- 12:19Speaker 2: There might be a young pitcher on the Cardinal staff
- 12:23Speaker 2: that's going to approach me and say, oh, Trevor, I
- 12:26Speaker 2: watched you pitch while I was growing up, and that's
- 12:29Speaker 2: how i feel when I see these guys. So I'm
- 12:31Speaker 2: excited for all of those. What about what about you? Katie?
- 12:33Speaker 1: It all comes full circle that this is exciting. I
- 12:35Speaker 1: know you did plenty of winter warm ups and did
- 12:37Speaker 1: they have Cardinal caravans when you were when you were
- 12:40Speaker 1: a player coming through the system.
- 12:41Speaker 2: They did. I went on a few of those, and
- 12:43Speaker 2: those are legendary. That's when you really get to know
- 12:46Speaker 2: somebody more than what you experienced, just running into them
- 12:50Speaker 2: and having a brief conversation. And I had my favorite,
- 12:54Speaker 2: most most favorite Cardinal caravan attendee and I'm sure we'll
- 12:57Speaker 2: see him this year was Danny Cox. Danny Cox was
- 13:01Speaker 2: a legend and we just hit it off. I mean,
- 13:04Speaker 2: he's an easy guy to get to know, he's very outgoing,
- 13:07Speaker 2: but spending time with him on the bus in between
- 13:09Speaker 2: stops and then overnight, you know, spending time with him
- 13:12Speaker 2: when the day was done, I really got to hear
- 13:15Speaker 2: some great stories and it's in as a as a
- 13:18Speaker 2: young player. When those guys encourage you, it just elevates
- 13:22Speaker 2: you and to get that boost of confidence heading into
- 13:24Speaker 2: the next season and then a lot for me. So
- 13:27Speaker 2: hopefully see Danny. I know Ricky Horton is always a
- 13:30Speaker 2: fun guy, a great gentleman to be around. And then
- 13:33Speaker 2: also a Todd Worrell. Todd Worell is a good friend
- 13:36Speaker 2: of mine. So I hope I get to run into
- 13:38Speaker 2: all of those.
- 13:38Speaker 1: All those peeps, well, I think all three of them
- 13:41Speaker 1: will be at the Writers Center. Ricky Horton is actually
- 13:43Speaker 1: getting an award. I'm a big Ricky Horton fan as well,
- 13:46Speaker 1: so I'm excited for that. I love the Writers Center.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Look I'm biased, I understand, but I think it's it's
- 13:52Speaker 1: pretty unique coming outside of Saint Louis. And you know,
- 13:56Speaker 1: they're thirty twenty five ish chapters of Baseball Writers throughout
- 14:01Speaker 1: the country and the only two chapters that still do
- 14:04Speaker 1: an annual writers dinner are Saint Louis and New York.
- 14:07Speaker 1: And the reason I mean New York is always going
- 14:09Speaker 1: to have a Writers Center that it's new York. It's
- 14:11Speaker 1: where you present the national Award. It's like MVP SI
- 14:14Speaker 1: Young Rookie of the Year, et cetera. But the fact
- 14:16Speaker 1: that Saint Louis can still do its annual Chapter award
- 14:19Speaker 1: is because of the community. It's because of Cardinals fans.
- 14:22Speaker 1: I mean they we do this because there is I mean,
- 14:25Speaker 1: tradition is so important, as we both know in this
- 14:27Speaker 1: with this organization, but there is truly a desire from
- 14:30Speaker 1: the community to do this kind of event every year.
- 14:33Speaker 1: And I think it's really special because I really hadn't
- 14:35Speaker 1: you know, I didn't really know that any other chapter
- 14:37Speaker 1: continued to do this outside of New York. So coming
- 14:40Speaker 1: into Saint Louis and seeing that there was still a
- 14:42Speaker 1: writer's dinner with our own awards, that is really I
- 14:45Speaker 1: think accepted and the community is excited for That's pretty cool.
- 14:50Speaker 1: So yeah, I think our program this year is really fun.
- 14:53Speaker 1: We have some great people. But for I think when
- 14:55Speaker 1: a warm up, I just like to see my friends, right,
- 14:58Speaker 1: I like to see the writers that I have. I've
- 15:00Speaker 1: been seen in that I spend almost every day with
- 15:03Speaker 1: from February to the end of September, and all of
- 15:06Speaker 1: a sudden, they just get like taken away from me
- 15:08Speaker 1: for the off season. I love seeing the broadcasters we
- 15:11Speaker 1: talked about Ricky Horton, Chip Carry, Brad Thompson, Mike Claybourn
- 15:14Speaker 1: and all those guys. They're wonderful. I put Alexa Dat
- 15:17Speaker 1: in there, but I literally see her like every week.
- 15:18Speaker 1: She's one of my best friends. So don't miss her
- 15:21Speaker 1: that much because I see her all the time. And
- 15:23Speaker 1: it's just nice because I think read excited for baseball.
- 15:26Speaker 1: The holidays are over, it's January, it's cold, it's snowy,
- 15:30Speaker 1: we're all thinking about Jupiter, at least I am, and
- 15:33Speaker 1: the sunshine and winter warm up. You get to kind
- 15:35Speaker 1: of talk to these players that you haven't seen in forever,
- 15:37Speaker 1: the coaches too, and get a feel of what it's
- 15:39Speaker 1: going to be like to go back to baseball Land
- 15:41Speaker 1: in less than a month. So that's exciting for me.
- 15:44Speaker 1: I know that we just got today the list of
- 15:47Speaker 1: players that are going to be that we do interviews with,
- 15:50Speaker 1: and the only like major league guy that I don't
- 15:54Speaker 1: see on there other than Nolan Arnatto, which was not
- 15:57Speaker 1: expecting him to come. I think it would be very
- 15:59Speaker 1: awkward if an organization was talking about trading a player
- 16:03Speaker 1: all year long and then all of a sudden he
- 16:05Speaker 1: was expected to come and talk about the future of
- 16:07Speaker 1: a team that he may I'm going to be part
- 16:08Speaker 1: of that. Aside, I don't see Nolan Gorman here, and
- 16:11Speaker 1: I think that's the only starter or like twenty six
- 16:15Speaker 1: man guy there that's not going to make it. Sunny
- 16:18Speaker 1: Gray was a late addition, so that's exciting. So is
- 16:20Speaker 1: Wilson Contraras. So these are all the guys that we
- 16:22Speaker 1: haven't really talked to since the end of the season,
- 16:24Speaker 1: and I know I personally enjoy all the interviews that
- 16:27Speaker 1: come along with a warm up as well.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm sure those guys, I mean, they're probably excited
- 16:32Speaker 2: to get back into the baseball swing at things as well,
- 16:35Speaker 2: and maybe that spurred them to come and join this event.
- 16:38Speaker 2: So it's good to hear that they're going to be there.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Another name that I missed and I shouldn't have is
- 16:43Speaker 2: Ozzie Smith. Always really cool to see Ozzie. What a
- 16:48Speaker 2: what a just a special person to have as a
- 16:51Speaker 2: as a Saint Louis Cardinal and all that he continues
- 16:53Speaker 2: to do for the organization. Willie McGee, Jason Izringhausen speaking
- 16:58Speaker 2: of Closers and Ryan and Hellsley and myself. You know,
- 17:02Speaker 2: Jason was a was a big part of my mentorship
- 17:04Speaker 2: in my career, so it'll be good to hopefully see him.
- 17:08Speaker 2: But yeah, I think it's I didn't know that about
- 17:11Speaker 2: the Saint Louis chapter being one of the only two
- 17:14Speaker 2: that still do this annual event. And when I think
- 17:18Speaker 2: about the Writer's Dinner, I think it's important. I mean,
- 17:21Speaker 2: the writers are ultimately that conduit between the fan base
- 17:24Speaker 2: and the players and the organization, and you all do
- 17:27Speaker 2: such a good job, especially in Saint Louis, of covering
- 17:30Speaker 2: the team and making the information accessible to the fan base.
- 17:34Speaker 2: And we are fortunate in Saint Louis to have such
- 17:37Speaker 2: a strong fan base, but I can't dismiss the work
- 17:40Speaker 2: that the broadcasters and the writers and all the media
- 17:42Speaker 2: team do to to expel that coverage. So yeah, I'm
- 17:47Speaker 2: I'm you know, this is gonna be new for me
- 17:49Speaker 2: kind of brushing shoulders with the media and the writers
- 17:53Speaker 2: in a different form and fashion this year. So hopefully
- 17:56Speaker 2: there's no weird initiations or anything that I have to
- 18:00Speaker 2: be ready for, but I'm looking forward to that.
- 18:03Speaker 1: No The only writer that would like plan something weird
- 18:05Speaker 1: like that would be me, so you don't have to
- 18:07Speaker 1: worry about it. I give father writers a lot of
- 18:09Speaker 1: patience sometimes because I say some wild things up there.
- 18:12Speaker 1: I'm just trying to, you know, light in the mood,
- 18:14Speaker 1: entertain people. It doesn't always fly. They're like, why is
- 18:18Speaker 1: she talking? Why is she still here? So you'll be
- 18:20Speaker 1: safe most likely, you know.
- 18:22Speaker 2: So I teamed up with the right person.
- 18:25Speaker 1: I'll save you to me.
- 18:27Speaker 2: I got in at the cool crowd.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Sure, I mean, if we use the word cool very loosely, yeah, absolutely,
- 18:34Speaker 1: So I was, you know, getting into my little reporter brain.
- 18:38Speaker 1: And because I am going back to what you just
- 18:40Speaker 1: said about having things to share with the fans, I
- 18:42Speaker 1: wish I had more things to share with the fans
- 18:44Speaker 1: this winter. Don't get me wrong, I've taken a lot
- 18:46Speaker 1: of PTO. It's been nice, but like I enjoy these
- 18:50Speaker 1: back and forth conversations. As part of the reason why
- 18:52Speaker 1: I wanted to start the show with you is because
- 18:54Speaker 1: it allows the back and forth, the conversation and then
- 18:57Speaker 1: sharing the knowledge that they who trusted me to provide.
- 19:01Speaker 1: So when I was going through I was like, who
- 19:05Speaker 1: am I most excited to interview, and I couldn't pick
- 19:08Speaker 1: a couple. And it's not necessarily that I'm like ansy
- 19:10Speaker 1: to ask these questions. I just really want to know
- 19:13Speaker 1: how these people feel. So let's go and pull out
- 19:16Speaker 1: my little calendar Saturday. Saturday is a full day, so
- 19:22Speaker 1: I think we're going to kick it off with John
- 19:23Speaker 1: Mozaelock around ten thirty or so. That's going to be
- 19:25Speaker 1: an interesting one, just because we always start with Mo
- 19:28Speaker 1: And you know, you can look at it two ways.
- 19:31Speaker 1: There's either not a lot to talk about for the
- 19:33Speaker 1: lack of moves, or a lot to talk about because
- 19:35Speaker 1: there haven't been very many moves. So excited to see
- 19:38Speaker 1: where things stand with the what he says in a
- 19:40Speaker 1: public forum, right, Like what I appreciate about Winter warm
- 19:43Speaker 1: Up is it allows these people, whether it's front office execs, coaches,
- 19:47Speaker 1: or players, to come up and in a public forum
- 19:50Speaker 1: kind of share how they feel. So I'm excited to
- 19:52Speaker 1: see what mosays. We got some fun players Sonny Gray
- 19:56Speaker 1: on Saturday, Ryan Helsley, Brendan Donna, and then two of
- 20:00Speaker 1: your old pals will close out the day. John Jay
- 20:03Speaker 1: and Daniel Discalso are going to be our closing interviews
- 20:06Speaker 1: on Saturday. Here's something about discalso he is a good interview.
- 20:11Speaker 1: I remember, I think like the very first game of
- 20:13Speaker 1: spring training last year. It's his first game, if you will,
- 20:16Speaker 1: as bench coach, and it's a split squad, which is
- 20:18Speaker 1: so weird. So Allie takes half the team and descalso
- 20:21Speaker 1: stays at the home at Roger Dean. I don't believe
- 20:23Speaker 1: in doing away games at spring training, so it was
- 20:25Speaker 1: very easy for me to stay. And I was ready
- 20:28Speaker 1: to grill him, just as a joke, because it's like
- 20:29Speaker 1: springs training. I was ready. I had all my stats.
- 20:32Speaker 1: I was going to question every decision. Why was he
- 20:34Speaker 1: so prepared? Why did he crush it? I was like,
- 20:36Speaker 1: oh man, no, he was on it and he wasn't
- 20:39Speaker 1: even tried. Like he was just such a good interviews,
- 20:41Speaker 1: and I'm sure John Jay is as well, because they
- 20:44Speaker 1: all come from that little branch, right like Skip Schremarker.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Fantastic interview. So maybe you should come in. Maybe you
- 20:49Speaker 1: should come in and grill them, because obviously I didn't
- 20:51Speaker 1: do a very good job.
- 20:52Speaker 2: I will try my best to grill, but I agree
- 20:56Speaker 2: they are never not prepared. My favorite, Daniel Descalzo story.
- 21:01Speaker 2: And this really summed up what I view Daniels dis
- 21:05Speaker 2: Scout view Daniel as as a person.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Is.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Uh, the year in spring training when they were moving
- 21:10Speaker 2: Matt Carpenter to second base, of course, Descalzo was our
- 21:14Speaker 2: second basement the year before, and and so that could
- 21:17Speaker 2: be an awkward situation. But watching how Descalzo handled that
- 21:22Speaker 2: blew my mind. He was out there every single day
- 21:25Speaker 2: with Matt Carpenter, showing the showing the ropes, giving him feedback,
- 21:29Speaker 2: you know, teaching him the position, a position that karp
- 21:32Speaker 2: had never played at the major league level before. And
- 21:34Speaker 2: I just watched this go on throughout the whole spring training,
- 21:37Speaker 2: and then it led into the season where carp kind
- 21:40Speaker 2: of you know, took his spot on the roster, took
- 21:42Speaker 2: the playing time from Descalzo, and uh, I have so
- 21:45Speaker 2: much respect for that. That is not an easy thing
- 21:48Speaker 2: to do as a major league baseball player, let alone
- 21:50Speaker 2: just as a human being. Helped somebody take time away
- 21:53Speaker 2: from you. So yeah, I would never have anything bad
- 21:57Speaker 2: to say about Daniel Discalzo for that. But I'm all
- 22:00Speaker 2: for giving a hard time because you better believe that
- 22:03Speaker 2: Daniel Descazo has given me plenty of hard times, and
- 22:07Speaker 2: John Jay is always right next to him egging it on.
- 22:10Speaker 2: So yeah, let's let's go and get those guys for sure.
- 22:13Speaker 1: Yes, you know, I love a good instigation, an instigator.
- 22:16Speaker 1: I wonder what it's going to be like to have
- 22:19Speaker 1: Allie Descalso and John Jay all together at once, and
- 22:24Speaker 1: how that's going to go. It should be, It should
- 22:27Speaker 1: be fun, I will say. I think the Cardinals coaching
- 22:29Speaker 1: staff in general does a great job of being accessible.
- 22:32Speaker 1: There are some funny guys out there, Stubby Clap, Pop Warner,
- 22:35Speaker 1: you get down the list. I really enjoyed this year,
- 22:38Speaker 1: the coaching staff last year, and most of them are
- 22:40Speaker 1: coming back. Other things I'm looking forward to at winter
- 22:44Speaker 1: and warm up Sunday. We got a lot of fun
- 22:48Speaker 1: players coming up. Pedro Pajs. He just spent about a
- 22:52Speaker 1: week or so down in Orange County with Nolanardotto and
- 22:54Speaker 1: Lars new Bars. That's a pretty good company. Excited to
- 22:57Speaker 1: see how that went for him. Zach Thompson, He's name
- 23:00Speaker 1: we didn't really hear much of last year, and I
- 23:02Speaker 1: think the Cardinals are trying to give him one more shot,
- 23:04Speaker 1: see what he can do. If he can make this
- 23:06Speaker 1: roster if he can be a legitimate piece for them.
- 23:09Speaker 1: But the guys that I'm really looking forward to, no surprise,
- 23:12Speaker 1: Mason Win, Jordan Walker on Sunday, they're just boys them.
- 23:17Speaker 1: We know how I feel. I'm excited.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Same here. Mason Win's my guy. I'm I'm excited to
- 23:23Speaker 2: you know, Jordan Walker, he's your guy. So yeah, let's
- 23:27Speaker 2: let's hype them up. Let's get them ready for this season.
- 23:29Speaker 2: They got to make us look good. Speaking of looking good,
- 23:32Speaker 2: the coaching staff. You mentioned the coaching staff. Look, this
- 23:35Speaker 2: is my view. I was thinking about this today while
- 23:38Speaker 2: I was listening listening to you and Bernie. If the Cardinals,
- 23:42Speaker 2: I mean, really, every win that the Cardinals get this year,
- 23:46Speaker 2: huge kudos to Marvel, Descalzo, Jay, this the whole coaching staff,
- 23:50Speaker 2: because it's a I mean a tough situation. You have
- 23:53Speaker 2: this kind of dual head of leadership with Mozay Loack
- 23:56Speaker 2: and Heim Bloom and who knows who's looking over their
- 24:00Speaker 2: shoulder or each other's shoulder, who's really calling the shots?
- 24:03Speaker 2: So a challenging year. I mean, we've seen it through
- 24:06Speaker 2: this offseas. We talked about it almost every week. At
- 24:08Speaker 2: this point of no news, no news, and not much
- 24:11Speaker 2: going on, So I'm prepared to give them all the
- 24:15Speaker 2: credit that they're going to deserve for all the wins
- 24:17Speaker 2: this year.
- 24:18Speaker 1: I love that energy. I have a quick story about
- 24:21Speaker 1: the Cardinals coaching staff. This is twenty twenty three, but
- 24:23Speaker 1: you know most of the people involved are still here.
- 24:26Speaker 1: And in twenty twenty three, we don't like to talk
- 24:28Speaker 1: about that year. And it was September. Cardinals are in Baltimore.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Nothing matters anymore except Adam Wayne Wright chase to two
- 24:37Speaker 1: hundred and this if he wins against Baltimore, would be
- 24:40Speaker 1: win number one ninety nine. And that coaching staff, from
- 24:44Speaker 1: Allie to their pitching coach Dusty Blake, to all the
- 24:47Speaker 1: subs that they did, to their bullpen catchers, to the
- 24:50Speaker 1: assistant pitching coaches, they managed that game like it was
- 24:53Speaker 1: Game seven of the World Series. They did a fantastic job,
- 24:56Speaker 1: and the Cardinals ended up winning. Adam Wayn Wright gets
- 24:59Speaker 1: the win his next he gets two hundred and that's
- 25:01Speaker 1: a career. Hell yeah, Adam. But I remember going into
- 25:04Speaker 1: the clubhouse after and looking at Ali and I was like,
- 25:07Speaker 1: you guys managed the hell out of that game. That
- 25:10Speaker 1: was so fun to watch in a season where it
- 25:12Speaker 1: really felt like everything was lost, to see this entire
- 25:15Speaker 1: coach and staff band together and execute this flawless game plan.
- 25:19Speaker 1: Because look, we cook these guys a lot when they
- 25:20Speaker 1: make a bad mistake or something that we don't understand
- 25:23Speaker 1: from a bullpen perspective, sub bench whatever. I think we
- 25:27Speaker 1: should give credit when credit is due, And that stands
- 25:29Speaker 1: out to me as one of Olli Marmal's best games.
- 25:32Speaker 1: And because of that, Adam Waimer got two hundred and
- 25:34Speaker 1: we had something to celebrate and was otherwise a very
- 25:37Speaker 1: roose out of ear.
- 25:38Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that was a huge highlight for me watching
- 25:41Speaker 2: that all happen. I remember thinking because there was a
- 25:44Speaker 2: few weeks where he was not getting not able to
- 25:46Speaker 2: get the win, and even if he came out with
- 25:49Speaker 2: the lead, they would lose it. And it was like,
- 25:51Speaker 2: oh man, he was right on the edge, and I
- 25:53Speaker 2: wanted to send him a message so bad, like dude,
- 25:55Speaker 2: just like come in out of the bullpen like sneak
- 25:58Speaker 2: a winning somehow. Stop going out there trying to pitch
- 26:02Speaker 2: six solid innings, five solid innings like you got to
- 26:04Speaker 2: get two hundred and time is dwindling. But I agree
- 26:08Speaker 2: with you. I watched that game and I couldn't have
- 26:11Speaker 2: been happier. It's good to hear from your perspective of
- 26:14Speaker 2: how intentional everybody was. I mean, as a as an
- 26:18Speaker 2: Adam Wayne Wright fan, I was rooting them on. I'm
- 26:20Speaker 2: sure everybody else in Saint Louis was as well. And
- 26:23Speaker 2: that's what makes it so hard for me, at least
- 26:25Speaker 2: looking at this season, not having the Adam Wayne right,
- 26:28Speaker 2: not having the Yadi or Molina. It's it's just such
- 26:30Speaker 2: a different feel to this Cardinals team than what I've
- 26:34Speaker 2: been used to. You know, mentioned John mos look with
- 26:37Speaker 2: him stepping down after this year, It's just it's such
- 26:40Speaker 2: an interesting time. I think, you know, all changes is
- 26:44Speaker 2: ultimately going to be good, but we're kind of in
- 26:46Speaker 2: the middle, and definitely in the middle right now when
- 26:48Speaker 2: we're talking about winter warm up preview and that's our
- 26:52Speaker 2: hot topic. So good times have to be ahead.
- 26:58Speaker 1: I would hope. So, you know, it's interesting to talk
- 27:01Speaker 1: about the the mosaic turnover, right, and it's part of
- 27:06Speaker 1: the reason why I'm interested for Monday. Monday is our
- 27:08Speaker 1: heavy hitters. We have all a talking Lars new Bar Wilson, Cuturis,
- 27:12Speaker 1: Miles Michaelis and I. They have not finalized when build
- 27:17Speaker 1: with Junior and Build what the third will speak, but
- 27:19Speaker 1: they usually speak every year on Monday, so just kind
- 27:21Speaker 1: of penciling that in and one, you know, it's not expected.
- 27:28Speaker 1: I think most organizations, most major league organizations are professional
- 27:31Speaker 1: sports organizations. To hear from your ownership group ever, is
- 27:37Speaker 1: you know, pretty rare. So I do you know, want
- 27:40Speaker 1: to commend the Cardinals ownership for speaking to the media
- 27:43Speaker 1: at least once a year, if not twice or three times.
- 27:46Speaker 1: I'm excited to see what they have to say, just
- 27:48Speaker 1: about you know, the state of the organization in general,
- 27:51Speaker 1: but specifically this turnover because it is a little unorthodox.
- 27:55Speaker 1: And look, the Cardinals have been very H've been very
- 27:59Speaker 1: clear on why Moa stayed for one more year and
- 28:02Speaker 1: why heim Bloom will take over in twenty twenty six.
- 28:04Speaker 1: We know about their succession plan, we know about the
- 28:07Speaker 1: player development why that needs to be revamped, and this
- 28:11Speaker 1: will hopefully give him a head like a head start
- 28:14Speaker 1: in twenty twenty six. But it is a little different
- 28:18Speaker 1: and it's not something that has really heard of throughout
- 28:20Speaker 1: the rest of sports. So I don't know the trouble
- 28:23Speaker 1: when you first heard about this, what was your instinct.
- 28:26Speaker 2: My first instinct was that it made a lot of sense.
- 28:30Speaker 2: I mean, I have a lot of respect for blo
- 28:33Speaker 2: Heim Bloom's resume and what he did in Tampa and
- 28:35Speaker 2: in Boston. You know, I think in Saint Louis we
- 28:39Speaker 2: have a lot to look forward to with the changes
- 28:42Speaker 2: that he's thinking of and already talking about. But as
- 28:46Speaker 2: time has gone on and now we're you know, stuck
- 28:49Speaker 2: in the middle of this offseason of continuing to talk
- 28:52Speaker 2: about a trade that's not happening and signings that will
- 28:55Speaker 2: most likely never happen, it makes me wonder really like
- 29:00Speaker 2: how does this how does this all play out? Like
- 29:02Speaker 2: who's calling this shots? Does hein Bloom have to get
- 29:06Speaker 2: a stamp of approval approval every time he wants to
- 29:09Speaker 2: make a decision by John mozay loock or is it
- 29:12Speaker 2: more of a hands off I mean, for lack of
- 29:14Speaker 2: better term, like are there just training wheels on this
- 29:17Speaker 2: on this bicycle right now? Or you know when do
- 29:20Speaker 2: those come off? And to me, you know, talking about
- 29:22Speaker 2: the ownership and you think about the ownership and them
- 29:25Speaker 2: making this decision, is I would be interested to hear
- 29:29Speaker 2: what they were thinking about that, and did they not
- 29:32Speaker 2: have the full amount of trust in Heim Bloom just
- 29:34Speaker 2: coming in and taking over right away. I don't know
- 29:37Speaker 2: a lot of for me from the outside looking in,
- 29:41Speaker 2: a lot of things that just seem hard to navigate
- 29:44Speaker 2: in over a long season too. I mean, at what
- 29:46Speaker 2: point during the season, I'm sure there's going to be
- 29:51Speaker 2: different viewpoints from John Moselack's camp to the heinm blooms camp,
- 29:54Speaker 2: and they want to go different directions, and who ultimately
- 29:57Speaker 2: has the final say in that decision make we know
- 30:00Speaker 2: next year it's going to be all Heime and Bloom.
- 30:02Speaker 2: But as Cardinal fans were kind of left stuck in
- 30:05Speaker 2: the middle of at least for this twenty five season, right.
- 30:08Speaker 1: Because anytime that you're planning something beyond twenty twenty five,
- 30:12Speaker 1: High and Bloom's input is obviously going to be necessary.
- 30:14Speaker 1: And when we know that Moe is in charge of
- 30:17Speaker 1: the lineup decision or not the lineup, excuse me, the
- 30:19Speaker 1: roster decisions for twenty twenty five and he's more or
- 30:21Speaker 1: less running the show, it does feel like Cardinals fans
- 30:24Speaker 1: are stuck in the middle because in order to plan
- 30:26Speaker 1: and for years ahead, time has to really be on
- 30:29Speaker 1: board with it because it's going to be his organization.
- 30:32Speaker 1: So again, I think what the Cardinals are doing makes
- 30:35Speaker 1: sense in terms of the player development standpoint, but I
- 30:39Speaker 1: mentioned I would like to ask the Dewitz just kind
- 30:41Speaker 1: of for more clarity on this how they think this
- 30:43Speaker 1: is going the direction of the organization. Their end of
- 30:45Speaker 1: the year press conference, which was objectively a disaster, left
- 30:50Speaker 1: more questions than answers, and everyone was on such a
- 30:53Speaker 1: time restraint, you know, we really didn't get to get
- 30:55Speaker 1: into anything. So I think when a warm up will
- 30:58Speaker 1: be a little less hectic then an end of season
- 31:01Speaker 1: live televised press conference. So plenty of questions, at least
- 31:04Speaker 1: on my end, and I know I'm certainly not the
- 31:06Speaker 1: only reporter with things to ask about the Saint Louis Cardinals.
- 31:10Speaker 1: So I'm looking forward to doing like actual work this weekend.
- 31:13Speaker 1: It's been a minute. Don't tell my bosses.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Back back to work, Katie. Uh yeah, you got at
- 31:19Speaker 2: least get warmed up for spring training, and so this
- 31:20Speaker 2: is your chance knock off some of the rust. I'll
- 31:23Speaker 2: be there. I'm gonna be right alongside you. Take it
- 31:27Speaker 2: easy on me. I promise not to embarrass myself. But yeah,
- 31:32Speaker 2: if you haven't bought tickets, come see us. We're gonna
- 31:36Speaker 2: we're gonna have a good time. At least, that's for sure.
- 31:38Speaker 1: We are twevor. Did you know I'm introducing I'm introducing
- 31:41Speaker 1: you at the Rider Center?
- 31:42Speaker 2: You are.
- 31:43Speaker 1: That's a lot of pressure. It's the second to last award, okay,
