- 1:59together. Now thought we were going to have the return to Miss Amanda this
- 2:02morning after long hiatus. Turns out the hiatus is going to be a little
- 2:06longer than expected. I got a textor missed Amanda early this morning that her
- 2:10hot water tank decided to explode quite literally, So no miss Amanda this morning.
- 2:16Instead grab someone from the newsroom. You hear her every morning on the
- 2:21morning news and she frequently pops her head in here to tell us things that
- 2:24are going on in the world. But today she's on with a full ride
- 2:28talking about Carrie Hood. Said Kerry, good morning. How are you.
- 2:30Good morning, Dave. I'm good. I've been in the studio now for
- 2:32the past more than three hours. Oh and by the way, I forgot
- 2:37to tell you Hoppies off today. So if you could just do talk line
- 2:40and also on hotline this afternoon and possibly Bongino if that's possible, could you
- 2:46do all this, take care of all the shows. Yeah, and there's
- 2:49some weeds need to be taking care of the transmitter. If you can just
- 2:51get the weed eater and go up there, we'll take care of that.
- 2:53Time. We'll replace the heater in here. Yes, yes, it's an
- 2:55ongoing thing. We had heat for like ten minutes. Yes, so now
- 3:00it's fine. But they understand, I understand. We got an email this
- 3:04morning that it's a work in progress that the it's the something I wouldn't understand,
- 3:09that's the flam adoodle or something like that is supposedly going to be in
- 3:14later in the days. We'll have more luck in twenty twenty four. That's
- 3:15what I'm hoping for. That's your news restlation. Yeah, we're gonna freeze
- 3:20in the studio. We're going to be talking to Carrie throughout the show and
- 3:23also going to be joined by Andy Shay, who's the owner and CEO of
- 3:27the Charleston Dirty Birds as the Selango law Light. The night continues over Goimar
- 3:31Ballpark. The final couple of nights of that. Eighty's going to join us.
- 3:35Talk about that a little bit later on Plus miss Uit de sec You
- 3:38get to play ten questions. Oh oh gosh, no boy. It's always
- 3:42interesting and I've and one. I've had people on here that will say it's
- 3:46interesting being on the other side because you make your living interviewing people. Now
- 3:50you get to be in there. It is I think I've only been interviewed
- 3:53once or twice in my life, and it is the most awkward feeling because
- 3:55I'm always doing the questions exactly exactly, all right, So we we are
- 4:00going to get that a little bit later on, but right now it's time
- 4:02to welcome and a good friend. Hannah Gardner from the Canal Charlesty, Maine
- 4:04Association with this week's Adopt Me Please Pet of the Week. Hannah, good
- 4:09morning, how are you? I'm good? How are you? I am
- 4:13fine? Hannah? Carrie, Carrie, Hannah, Hi, Hannah, how
- 4:15are you? I'm good? And yeah, all the pleasantries now have have
- 4:20been exchanged. All right, as always, I got the picture of our
- 4:24pet posted on Dave Aland Radio and Facebook and the Dave Villand Show on ex
- 4:28Hannah tell us the story of Hamlin. All right, Hamlin is a male.
- 4:34He is about one year. I'd say he's a fresh one year or
- 4:40two, because he still kind of shows as if he's more like puppy like.
- 4:46He is very playful with other dogs. He definitely still pulls on the
- 4:50leaf some, so he would benefit from some leaf training. Also, from
- 4:56what we have noticed in our care is that he was kid friendly. He
- 5:02actually was adopted prior to being at the shelter again, but of no fault
- 5:09of his own that the children were actually allergic to the dogs, so they
- 5:13had to bring him back, which is perfectly okay. He's looking for another
- 5:16home now, and he is a really really good all around dog. He
- 5:21definitely would probably be a good one for somebody who has a fencing yard that
- 5:28he could run around in, or someone who likes to go hiking or be
- 5:31an outdoorsy a lot, because he does have a lot of energy. He
- 5:35is still young, and we do consider him one of our class clowns because
- 5:41he is loose and lobbly and he's just fun and he just doesn't really care.
- 5:46He's just so happy to be alive. He's just such a good,
- 5:49good dog, and he is ready for a home. He said. He
- 5:57likes to be around other dogs that are playful too, So what what kind
- 6:01of you know, what's his personality like? If you could talk more about
- 6:04that kind of reindeer games is what Carrie's asking. He's just a really playful
- 6:12dog in general. He likes to play with other dogs that are equally as
- 6:15playful. He likes to run around, like when he's in play groups.
- 6:18He's very playful and alert. He's, like I said, he has chose
- 6:25to do good with kids. But where he is so playful, we always
- 6:28advise caution just because of how you know, rambunctious, little playful dogs can
- 6:32be. And he's he's not little, I shouldn't say little. He's about
- 6:35fifty one pounds. He's about an average fass dog. But he definitely is
- 6:42looking for a young couple or even a family that is willing to take him
- 6:46in and play with him and give him that face, the room around and
- 6:50stuff. So he would definitely be a good one for that. And he
- 6:54did come in as astray to us, so we don't know much about his
- 6:58past, but from what we do know since he's been with us, he's
- 7:01just a really really sweet, loving, playful dog. Any idea what kind
- 7:05of dog he is? I mean, I'm not good at you know,
- 7:09even I'm a I'm a pet person. I look at the pictures that you
- 7:11send him, by the way, again, the pictures posted on my Facebook
- 7:13and on my x page. Any any idea what kind of dog Hamblin is
- 7:18or Carrie, do you have a have a guess? I don't. I'm
- 7:21more of a cat person, but he is a cutie though, I'm looking
- 7:25at his picture right now. Any idea he definitely gives me, which you
- 7:30know, we we have no idea really what he is, but he gives
- 7:33me like lab nauser ish kind of vibes, maybe even like I mean,
- 7:41I wouldn't really want to say foolish, but definitely see maybe even a little
- 7:47pity. But you'd be surprised because I have one that looks like her,
- 7:50and she is a golden mixed with a pity, So she who knows that
- 7:58she's definitely or he is very very very sweet, very very cute. Well,
- 8:01and as you said, through no thought of his own, he was
- 8:05adopted and they had to bring him back because apparently the kids were allergic to
- 8:07him. So I wanted to throw that out there. I don't want to
- 8:09kind of throw a monkey ranch in in the whole thing, but we do
- 8:11want to make sure that maybe people realized that maybe take the dog out for
- 8:18like a kind of a trial run bringing bring him to the house and see
- 8:22how it does, because sometimes there are people that are have allergic issues when
- 8:28it comes to any kind of a pet. So we want to make sure
- 8:30that's the case. And hats off to those people for realizing that and bringing
- 8:33the dog back to the shelter as supposed to, just like setting it out
- 8:35somewhere. So hats off to those people go take a look at Hamlet's picture.
- 8:39We'll have we'll kind of a recap on Hamlet here in a couple of
- 8:43moments. But I want to talk to you, Hannah about your event that
- 8:46you held at Todd Judy on Patrick Street last week. How was How was
- 8:50that he took some animals on the road as we were speaking last Friday?
- 8:52How'd that turn out? Yeah, we actually had a few adoptions at that
- 8:58event and it was successful. We had a lot back at the shelter as
- 9:01well, so throughout the whole day it was pretty successful. And we are
- 9:07doing it all over again this weekend, I believe on Saturday, so we'll
- 9:11be there from twelve to two. Now. Is that that the Patrick Street
- 9:15Todd Judy? Is that right? Yes, the Patrick Street location. And
- 9:18Todd Judy sponsored all the adoption fees, so it'll be zero dollars for everybody,
- 9:24all right? And big shout out again to Todd and Becky and all
- 9:26those soaks over Todd Judy because they go above and beyond one helps when it
- 9:31comes to well, they go above me when it comes to the community in
- 9:33general, but especially with animals. And we I know you folks at the
- 9:37at the shelter appreciate them anything in particular the shelter is in need of at
- 9:41this time. Yeah, so I know that, of course we're still always
- 9:46accepting blankets and sheets and stuff like that. I know that we could use
- 9:52our usual stuff, which is like soap, trash bags some again blankets,
- 9:58and I know that we I know that we were fine on cat food there,
- 10:03so I believe the last I heard was some puppy pads and stuff like
- 10:09that, so we could really use all of that for right now. All
- 10:13right, all right, well, Hannah is always it's a pleasure to have
- 10:16you on the show. Thank you for being on. This is the final
- 10:18time we'll talk to you this year. You haven't been fired though, you'll
- 10:22be back next to next week, I promise. So it's you know,
- 10:24you're a spectacular person for everything that you do there, you and Angie and
- 10:28everybody at the shelter. We appreciate you taking time each week to talk to
- 10:31us, and we'll talk to you again of the new year. Happy New
- 10:33Year, kid, Happy new year to you guys. All right, thank
- 10:37you again. It's sa Hannah Gardner from the Canna Trust Me Man Association with
- 10:39this week's a doot me please. Pet of the Week. Hamlin is the
- 10:43dog's name. One year old, not fixed she but will be micro chipped
- 10:46and Vaccinata prefers, playful dogs, lots of energy, carry seems kid friendly,
- 10:52somewhat loose and clumsy. I love that description. And he's a class
- 10:56clown. I love that it's a class cloud. Could use a little little
- 11:00bit more to leash trady, they said, and he's around fifty pounds.
- 11:03But again, was adopted and the family, the kids apparently had some issue
- 11:09with the fur of the dog. In that case, I'd say, get
- 11:11rid of the kids. That's just me, that's just me being a jerk.
- 11:16But no, I'm kidding. I'm kidding about that. But I do
- 11:18appreciate though. Again, as I said, to people bringing the dog back
- 11:22to the shelter instead of just throwing it out somewhere, they did the right
- 11:24thing. There so plenty of pets available for adoption, including Hamlin. His
- 11:28pictures posted on Dave Allen Radio and Facebook and the Dave Allen Chill ONEX.
- 11:33So go check out Hamlin and go get yourself a new pet for the new
- 11:37year. Carry. You are a cat person, as you said, is
- 11:39that right. Yeah, I've been my whole life. I have a cat
- 11:43myself. He's too. Cat's famous by everybody asks about him in the newsroom.
- 11:48His name's Charlie, named after Charleston because I started my radio career here
- 11:52in Charleston, so I thought it was only fitting. And I got him
- 11:54when I moved back to West Virginia, about a week or so after I
- 11:58had made the trip back from Kellifornia. But yeah, he's two years old.
- 12:01He'll be three in March, and he's just I call my little buddy.
- 12:05He's always he's attached to me all the time, very clingy. Has
- 12:09a big personalities. First boy cat I had. I had girl cats growing
- 12:13up, but a big difference. He's just like bigger. Likes the fight.
- 12:18He kind of acts like a dog almost he doesn't. He does not
- 12:20like to get left alone. So it kind of sounds like my wife and
- 12:24I have a cat. We did have a female and a male, and
- 12:28then we had to have the female put down last year, so now we
- 12:30just have the male. His name is Grady, named after Grady from my
- 12:33favorite show Sandford and Son growing up as a kid. Grady also thinks he's
- 12:37a dog. Grady follows me pretty much everywhere I go in the house.
- 12:43It whimpers when I leave in the morning, and very excited to see me
- 12:46when I come home. And you know, I like dogs too. I
- 12:50like animals of all kinds. I really do. But my life and my
- 12:54wife's life is just really not conducive to having a dog. Cats. Our
- 12:58cat came in as astray. He never goes outside. He has no interest.
- 13:01He looks out the window. But you open that door because he came
- 13:03in on a morning we took him in when it was like, you know,
- 13:07ten degrees some cold, cold morning in the winter, and you know,
- 13:11you open that door. He's like, I'm not going out there.
- 13:13You're crazy. You go out there. I'm not going out there. That's
- 13:16kind of the way our grady is. But all right, we're going to
- 13:18take a break to Dave Aland showing five eighty Lives. Brought to you part

- 16:47How are you. I'm doing great about yourself. I am doing fine.
- 16:48Thank you for being here, sir. I appreciate you taking time,
- 16:52and I'm kind of asking it's kind of obligatory that you have to do this
- 16:56anytime you have a guest on the show or in television or whatever. Any
- 17:00New Year's resolutions for you. Well, I work in sports, so I
- 17:04think I need to be a little more fit than I am currently, and
- 17:07I'm feeling a big time after these holidays and your classic two kids under five
- 17:14that are sick NonStop. So uh yeah, I've got the classic health related
- 17:19and that's that's a good start for me. Okay, all right, what
- 17:25are the odds that you're going to be able to hold on me? Because
- 17:26you look at you, you're not You're not exactly like a big fat gal
- 17:30like I am. Well, I don't know how I do on the diamond
- 17:33right now though, So anyways, and that's not exactly the goal, but
- 17:37now it is something that I've semi I don't want to say pride to myself,
- 17:41but works towards the entire time I've been in this career because I work
- 17:45in professional sports, you know, and it's I can see how guys who
- 17:49you know, may not be athletic or interact with the team, the players.
- 17:53I mean, it's a real thing. So it's always been a goal
- 17:56of mine. All right, Well, good luck with you, thank you,
- 17:57I appreciate well. Back with you in you know, January tenth or
- 18:02something like that. That's what happens a lot of times. That's what happened
- 18:04a lot of times. All right, final days of the Selango Law Light
- 18:08the night to go mot Ballpark, and what a season it has been.
- 18:11You had this vision and you explained we'll tell you what. Let's do this,
- 18:15go back and explain where the vision for this came from you did it
- 18:18the last time we were here, But in case people missed it, where
- 18:19do where did this whole idea come from? Absolutely so about at this point,
- 18:23it'd be about thirteen months ago I went to something like this, not
- 18:26at the exact same obviously, and not in the same city stadium anything,
- 18:30but I went to something like this with my then four year old son and
- 18:33with my mom, and I mean it was at that point my son's life
- 18:38definitely the number one thing that I felt like I had taken him to that
- 18:42he just enjoyed that, he was fulfilled, that we probably needed more time.
- 18:48And as I was leaving, driving on the interstate that was close to
- 18:52that stadium, I saw the giant ferris wheel and it was almost like that
- 18:56was the time where it clicked where I was like, wait, that's Charleston
- 19:02Stadium and was sixty four right there and you see that and like you have
- 19:04the visual and all that stuff. So it really was soon after that,
- 19:08I mean it was right around Christmas last year that I really really started talking
- 19:12to people ab bouth in the city government here as well as some of the
- 19:17other people who had done these things, and you know, the people who
- 19:19actually order all the crazy amount of lights and visuals and all that good stuff,
- 19:26and it was awesome starting in January. This one guy, I mean,
- 19:29he's an absolute beast. I mean he was making these drives up from
- 19:30Texas pretty much every other month, and I mean it's you know, I
- 19:33would tell people this entire light the night event where it's like, hey,
- 19:37that's not a coincidence that those lights are like the exact fit for that wall
- 19:41and the exact fit for the exact amount and scene and everything on the field.
- 19:48I mean this guy and with us and with our team, I mean,
- 19:49we really had one heck of a design and map for it, and
- 19:53then it just kept growing. I mean that's what's amazing it. You know
- 19:56it just the idea, the visual kept growing. It you kept seeing how
- 20:00it would work in our particular stadium, and then the thing it was just
- 20:04super awesome. Uh was the entire you know, one plus month of setting
- 20:08this up and everything, the amount of people that drove by that saw it,
- 20:12that walked by that saw it, that you know, tricker beat.
- 20:17That was an amazing little you know, uh, what would you call grassroots
- 20:21marketing stance, So that that really helped kind of people start visualizing it themselves
- 20:26because I was so excited. But I think that that last month or so
- 20:29it was great. And when it's in your head sometimes I think, ay,
- 20:33trying to get that imparted to other people. It's like it's in my
- 20:37head, but but it looks like you were able to execute it. Pretty
- 20:41much. It's always in your head and you're sput on because you know,
- 20:44I mean, it's so unique, it's so big, it's so different that
- 20:48visualizing that to people, you know, I mean I could show them videos
- 20:52of other stadiums, which helped. You know. I must have said the
- 20:56term Winter Wonderland ten thousand times, right, you know, I mean it
- 20:59was it was the go to. But it's turned out absolutely amazing. Give
- 21:03me some wait for ballpark figures. There we go. What I did there,
- 21:07Karen, I get it. See what I did there? On attendance
- 21:11for Light to Night. I mean, just give me some some figures.
- 21:15How many people have come through? We are currently over one hundred thousand people
- 21:18and we've got a few days left and we'll see, you know, I
- 21:22mean every day and every week and every experience is a first. So I've
- 21:26you know, going into Thanksgiving I had absolutely zero idea what to expect for
- 21:30Thanksgiving Night, for Black Friday, all that stuff. I had no clue
- 21:33what to expect for leading up to Christmas. So you know, these next
- 21:37few days could be gigantic, really, but now I think we'll be in
- 21:41one hundred and twenty hundred and twenty five thousand people range for the six week
- 21:45event. And those people that come in, many of them are not from
- 21:48Charleston. They come in from a lot of other areas. Andy a giant
- 21:52amount, So between traveling and whatnot, I haven't been able to check the
- 21:56data in the last couple of weeks, but even through the first two three
- 22:00weeks it was over I believe it was over forty states. And trust me,
- 22:04for a relatively new guy living here, I'm starting to learn a heck
- 22:07of a lot of West Virginia towns, zip codes, everything else that I
- 22:11had no clue about, because you know, I start seeing it, so
- 22:15I mean, it really is. It's definitely the whole map. But man,
- 22:18from a West Virginia perspective, it is absolutely awesome the amount of people
- 22:22that have come. Talking with Andy Shade, the GM and CEO of the
- 22:26Dirty Birds, Carrie, I know, you guys in a newsroom have done
- 22:30a lot of reporting on this about the number of people that have come in.
- 22:33It's absolutely amazing, it really is. And what's the feedback been like
- 22:36from people? What do they say they like the most about it? Well?
- 22:38I think that they you know, so first of all, the thing
- 22:41that has been such a pleasure is that it's almost no negative feedback. I
- 22:45mean that's what's been amazing. I think that a lot of people and this
- 22:48was something that I underestimated. I guess maybe I'll admit the ice skating rink
- 22:52that has been outrageously popular. People have loved it, They've come back,
- 22:57they've rented it out afternoon. So that has been one that has been outrageously
- 23:03popular. The Selango Law Ferris wheel that was one that was a relatively last
- 23:08minute add for us, and now I can't picture it without it. Yeah,
- 23:11I mean that is such a fun thing and so unique and all that
- 23:15stuff. Uh. And then of course the lights, you know, I
- 23:18mean just being able to get lost in that and how many lights total we've
- 23:22been I mean it's minimum two million, might as well say four million,
- 23:25right, I mean, like it's a I've said one time on the air,
- 23:29I said a million, and somebody text me and said it's two million.
- 23:30It's definitely. I mean, it's certainly over two million. Uh and
- 23:34that's even what we started with. We've been added in the last six weeks.
- 23:37But uh Now, the other thing that's been really cool hearing anecdotally from
- 23:41people is that they come back. So that's you love to hear that,
- 23:45and they notice new things on the field. So I mean with the lights,
- 23:48because it's just so you know, kind of stimulating and almost overwhelming that
- 23:52you know, people probably miss things and they love being able to come back
- 23:56and see oh my gosh, I didn't even see that last time. I
- 23:57mean, we've been seeing these events to grow bigger and bigger each year in
- 24:00the City of Charles and that's part of what we do here in the news
- 24:03team is we cover these events and so to see something like this just grow
- 24:07and explode. It's also about making use of the new turf field and what
- 24:11you have there. If you could talk about that, Yeah, that's a
- 24:12one hundred percent fact that you know that artificial turfield that Mayor Goodwin's crew and
- 24:18the City of Charleston that they really you know, they blessed us with that,
- 24:22and that has been a absolute complete utter game changer. I mean for
- 24:26this event. But when you just look at the calendar, I mean this
- 24:30calendar, and well you talk about some ballpark numbers, I can't wait to
- 24:33pull all those because we had over I think it was like fifty college games
- 24:37between WV Tech Marshall and WVU played at a game without Marshall. And this
- 24:44year anyways, we had a crazy amount of high school games. We had
- 24:47a crazy amount of youth games. We had the Savannah Bananas, we had
- 24:49the high school state Tournament, we had obviously the Dirty Bird season, we
- 24:52had all the camps that we did. We had a concert at our music
- 24:56festival this October. So there's almost a zero percent chance you'd be able to
- 25:00do half of that if we did not have the artificial turf field. So
- 25:03having that, and especially for this event in a bad weather month, when
- 25:08I mean that could that could really tear the living heck out of the field
- 25:12on some of these nights or days after. Whereas for us, we're open.
- 25:18We don't think twice about it. There'll be some maintenance and stuff afterwards,
- 25:21but nothing that our crew can't handle. In two weeks versus again,
- 25:26if it was a real, real progress. I mean again, if we
- 25:29did it, we would just have to be able to tell our team and
- 25:33visiting teams, hey, just suck it, you know, like, sorry,
- 25:34you're playing on like a high school field, but you know nothing we
- 25:37can do. Well, I'm going to go back to the ice skating here
- 25:41for a moment. Are you an ice skater? Karen No, I wish
- 25:44I was. The reason I say that is because Carrie and we're going to
- 25:45get into her background. Lilted Billy is originally a Jersey girl, and we
- 25:48and we here always think that anybody north to hear that they're all on skates.
- 25:52That's just the vision we have in our head. If you get a
- 25:55chance. I know, I posted it on my social medium, our man
- 26:00what he was from our sister station to beat one of seven three to beat.
- 26:03I don't really know what you call that move he was doing on ice
- 26:06skates over at the ballpark. It was better than I could do. I'll
- 26:08tell you that because I was thinking, is the next Winter Olympics. I
- 26:14was thinking seizure. That's what it looks like what I saw. But no,
- 26:18but that has been a very very popular thing. Again, something that
- 26:22would not be popular or would not be possible, I should say, Andy,
- 26:26if it were on a grass field, you just simply couldn't have that.
- 26:29I couldn't even imagine that. Yeah, like it would he wouldn't have
- 26:32a right field a season next year. And you know, it has been
- 26:36cool, it's been you know, you see some of these kids are adults
- 26:38that are whipping around there that are clearly know what they're doing, that you
- 26:41know, have great control all of that stuff. But inevitably there are we
- 26:45have those little like kind of walker type things for news skaters. You see
- 26:49fifteen of those out there at any given time, because whether it's kids or
- 26:53new people or whatever, I mean, they just but they're just dying to
- 26:56check it out. They're they're so excited to try it. And you know,
- 27:00again the way that it's interacted and people have just been so pumped to
- 27:03be there that the people who know very very well what they're doing are totally
- 27:07cool and interactive, and it worked out perfectly beautiful and great with the people
- 27:11who were a one. Yeah, not exactly like I would be very well
- 27:18at my age, I'm worried about breaking a hip out there. That's what
- 27:19I can't say. I had a couple of texts here for you. One
- 27:22said, do the Dirty Bird provide wheelchair used for handicapped people coming to light
- 27:26the night? Or so are we handicapped accessible? You're one percent handicap accessible.
- 27:30That was one of the first things that we you know, really that
- 27:33we included on our website, that we made sure was possible and all that
- 27:36stuff. So to get on the field, it would be behind center field.
- 27:40There's a way, of course, all the way around the concourse.
- 27:41So yes, by all means it is Tex says this al Ango Light the
- 27:45Night is first class all the way our state needed to display. And a
- 27:48big thank you to everyone involved in making this happen. That's amazing. I've
- 27:52I've loved I appreciate that. I appreciate that right here and hearing a lot
- 27:57of those responses and support, and you know, I mean, it really
- 28:00has been very special and quite frankly, the way that you know, I
- 28:03was already thinking, but the way that really my mind thinks then is like,
- 28:07Okay, what more can I do next year? And that's what's cool
- 28:10man. And again this was year one, As you said, you came
- 28:12in with a basic idea. But anytime you do any sort of an event,
- 28:17you set down, you know, when it all ends with a legal
- 28:18pad, and you say what worked, what didn't work, what can we
- 28:22make better, how can we market it better? Things of that nature.
- 28:25And when you put that in conjunction Andy with what went on with Holly Jolly
- 28:27Brawley and what continues to go on there. I mean Charleston and Carrie you
- 28:33see this as well. I mean Charleston was kind of the place to be
- 28:36this Christmas season. Yeah, when I was here eight years ago, when
- 28:37I started in twenty fifteen, we didn't have any of this. We had
- 28:41some things, but nothing as big as what we're seeing now. Yeah,
- 28:44I want to talk switch gears before we'll let you go. Indian, don't
- 28:48want to talk about this before you know what. The balls will be flying
- 28:52and the bats will be cracking for the twenty twenty four edition of The Dirty
- 28:56Birds over at the Gomart Ballpark. Any kind of a preview you can give
- 29:00us, I know we have with new people in place over there, what
- 29:03are we looking forward? I'm always thinking I'm a baseball guy, why I'm
- 29:06a sports guy in general, But I'm always thinking about especially in the winner.
- 29:08I'm always thinking baseball absolutely well, it means warm weather. So we
- 29:12don't have much in terms of like literal players or whatever. But I've got
- 29:15a great, awesome relationship in history with our new manager. He was my
- 29:18manager and our previous team when I was in Lexington. I've known him since
- 29:23excuse me, twenty twenty and we won the championship together in Lexington in twenty
- 29:27twenty one. Where PJ starts his roster is power He is a power back
- 29:33guy that's number one. Number two goes to the bullpen. Then we're talking
- 29:38about you know, you round it out with the starting pitching and everything else.
- 29:41So PJ is he has got one heck of a network. I mean,
- 29:48that's what I've appreciated and respect about him since day one. And man,
- 29:52that guy is out there to win. If you like he that's that's
- 29:56his main priority. I Mean there are certain managers that want to be friends
- 30:00with the players. There are certain managers that just want to look cool.
- 30:03They are certain managers that are trying to claiming this, that or the other
- 30:06thing. PJ it is, you know, there's no you can't look at
- 30:10it any other way. He is there to win. What kind of other
- 30:12events are on the calendar for twenty twenty four. I mean, you did
- 30:15everything for the Down and Dirty, You had concerts and things of that nature.
- 30:19Can you give us little preview of what you're expecting in the new year.
- 30:22Well, I need some ideas. I love some ideas, but I
- 30:26well, I mean I'm pumped a say, you know, we're obviously you
- 30:30know some of the Marshalls games in Marshall WVU. That was that really was
- 30:34and that was the one that really really really kicked off the twenty twenty three
- 30:38season. I mean, don't get wrong, we had games before that,
- 30:41but that one over five thousand people for that game that kicked off the WHOA
- 30:47all right awesome, And then it was three weeks later Bananas. Then it
- 30:49was a couple of weeks later the Dirty Birds, all that stuff. So
- 30:53yeah, I love what everything will center around moving forward is kids, families,
- 30:59because that is it's. It was so awesome hearing from so many random
- 31:04people over the last six weeks how pumped they were that they had somewhere to
- 31:08go with their families. And when I took my kids my kids are two
- 31:11and five, a bunch of especially five year old and his friends came out
- 31:15a bunch. They were never bored. I mean it was so awesome and
- 31:18hearing from the parents and hearing from everyone else how they were so pumped about
- 31:22this. So, you know, both in terms of planning Light the Night
- 31:25next year, but then also whether it's a ridiculously cool Easter egg hunt or
- 31:30something along those lines, like things for kids and families, that is something
- 31:34I really, really really want to grow at the ballpark. All right,
- 31:37now, again, give us the timeline because the reason I want to have
- 31:40you on today is we're in the final few days of Light the Night.
- 31:44So what's it looking like over the New Year's weekend. Yeah, I think
- 31:47it'll be I think it'll be absolutely amazing. And we're going strong. I
- 31:49mean that's what the last night is January first. January first, it's all
- 31:52way through January first. So and how is the we I mean, we've
- 31:56really only had one evening of snow here in the Charleston area, and I
- 32:00saw some pictures posted online. We had the night some Monday night, I
- 32:04think it was a couple weeks ago, and we had the snow squalls,
- 32:06COVI did whatever it seemed like people said, there's snow in the air,
- 32:08let's go to the ballpark. That was a funny one. That was something
- 32:12I started hearing around Thanksgiving actually that people were saying, we'll be back when
- 32:15it snows. I was like, oh my gosh, I didn't even think
- 32:16about that, Like, but that is ridiculously cool. And those pictures that
- 32:20we got were awesome. The one kind of bummer is that that was our
- 32:24one dog night, so not exactly the best luck for that. But it
- 32:29was beautiful. And yeah, all think said weather's weather, but I mean
- 32:31I think it's you can't do anything about it, but get your family out
- 32:36there over the next couple days because again it's going to run through New Year's
- 32:39Night, which is a Monday night. Get over there, over to the
- 32:42ballpark and come enjoy four seven eight million lights over there, and plus the
- 32:46skating, plus the ferris wheeled everything that goes along with Andy. She appreciate
- 32:51you, appreciate everything that you've done and making this happen. You and the
- 32:54folks at Selenga Law for making this happen. And it's going to be even
- 32:59bigger and better for next year. We're still got a couple of more days.
- 33:00Take it in over at the ballpark and I'll be having you on and
- 33:05your new manager on as we get ready for baseball season. I'm already ready.
- 33:08Well, hey, we're ready. Trust me, he's ready. He
- 33:10was texting me. You know, we gave the nice, solid little a
- 33:14mery Christmas, right, Christmas? Hey? Have you found out about this?
- 33:15Have you found about this? What's I was like, well, okay,
- 33:17let me get back. So yeah, now we're fired up. I
- 33:21appreciate it all right, Eddie. I appreciate you being here. Andy Sha

- 36:25Yeah, you know, And it's just kind of I have a little bit
- 36:28of break trying to give a dog away and fight people from the community.
- 36:31But we only get to know you a little bit now. I mean I'm
- 36:35a little bit biased, but I will say that you know, you're a
- 36:38part of the best news organization in the entire state of West Virginia. So,
- 36:45and by the way, I just got an email. I don't know
- 36:46whether you got this or not, that I think Today's Jeff Jenkins work anniversary
- 36:50thirty seven years, thirty seven years in nineteen eighty six, and you were
- 36:55probably born in eighty six ninety one, all right, eighty six I would
- 37:00have been been to what test? So that was the December of eighty sixth
- 37:02I was a junior in high school. I don't want to talk about you
- 37:06or Ryan either one, but nineteen eighty six, Ryan's Ryan's leaving to God
- 37:09School. What's in nineteen eighty six? Yeah, but the congratulation to Jeff
- 37:15thirty seven years, Jeff Jenkins the head gad the news department here, So
- 37:17that's certainly, certainly a milestone. Let's talk about your background. Where is
- 37:23home for you when you're not in the Kanal Valley? Where are you from?
- 37:27Well, most people have heard I'm from New Jersey, originally from South
- 37:30Jersey, right outside Atlantic City, about fifteen minute drive to the Jersey Shore.
- 37:35Well, you probably would have appreciated the Bruce Springsteen bumper music that right
- 37:37just played. Yeah, that was not planned by the way go ahead.
- 37:42It's very fitting. No, but yeah, I grew up there. I
- 37:44went to college in Philadelphia LaSalle University. I worked in radio for a little
- 37:50bit there. And then got the job here in twenty fifteen, coming up
- 37:53on nine years ago, which is crazy. But I did take a brief
- 37:57break. I took a job out in calif fourn in San Francisco, worked
- 38:00out there for three years, and then got the call to come back here
- 38:05because there was an opening to co host the morning news and how could I
- 38:07pass up an opportunity to work with Chris Lawrence in the Gang. So I've
- 38:12been back here now since June of twenty one, so it's been great to
- 38:16be back. And just it was funny story. I came back here and
- 38:21I was greeted with hugs, and normally on your first day of work,
- 38:24that's not teffical, that's hr frowns upon that sting. So welcome back to
- 38:30West Virginia though. Yeah. People, it just felt like coming home to
- 38:31family. So yeah, And by the way, somebody asked me this morning
- 38:36about about Chris. Chris is off on medical leave right now. He is
- 38:39a little surgical procedure. He's going to be back better. It's like the
- 38:43bionic Man, you know. He's been a bigger, better, stronger,
- 38:45faster, but he had some much need of medical things. He's taking care
- 38:47of not life threatening or anything like that. But he'll be back here in
- 38:52a couple of weeks. So I want to wish Chris the best. Talk
- 38:55about Carrie in high school? What was What was Carrie like in high school?
- 39:00Carrie was in the marching band. I was in the color guard,
- 39:02so that's what the flags and the dancing. I did not play an instrument,
- 39:06so don't ask me what instrument I played. But yeah, I had
- 39:08a lot of friends through the band. I did media classes, obviously,
- 39:13because I you know, in high school, that's when I discovered my love
- 39:17for broadcasting. I wanted to do television news at first, and then I
- 39:22got introduced to the world of radio and I thought, wow, this is
- 39:24so much more interesting than TV. So I explain that why was radio more
- 39:30interesting than telegraon? Yeah, so I just liked the idea of listening to
- 39:36a news story with sound alone and not having to focus on, oh,
- 39:39what this person is saying and what they look like and what's in the background.
- 39:44And because sometimes we can get distracted by watching a news story and not
- 39:47really paying attention to the meat of the heart of the story. So I
- 39:52would, you know, listen to radio. I'd listen to KYW News Radio,
- 39:55which is the station back in Philadelphia, and other news stations back home,
- 40:00and I just I wanted to be one of those voices. I thought
- 40:02it was so cool to just get behind a microphone. You don't have to
- 40:06dress up or anything, and you could just be real. All the truth
- 40:07comes out, yeah, and you could just it's personal. Radio is personal,
- 40:12and that's kind of what I wanted to do. And so when I
- 40:14went to New York City, because my family and I would take trips annually
- 40:19Christmas time, we would see the Rockefeller Christmas Tree because we were only about
- 40:22two hours south of New York City, so that was a thing we did.
- 40:24And one time during those trips, my dad took me to the NBC
- 40:29News studio tour out in New York City and I saw an anchor desk for
- 40:35the first time, and I said to my dad, I want to do
- 40:37that. I just like pointed to the desk. I said what do I
- 40:40have to do in order to become a news anchor? And my dad said,
- 40:43well, you have to take journalism classes and media and you have to
- 40:45study communication in college. I said, okay, and then I started taking
- 40:49media in high school so I did a lot of video editing there, but
- 40:53video editing wasn't my expertise. I always liked to run the audio boards for
- 40:58some reason. So so yeah, in high school, I was a little
- 41:00bit of that media. I was always hanging out in the media studio.
- 41:04We had a newsroom and we did a morning news program Gammy TV. My
- 41:07high school was Apsigamy High School, so excellent, Apsagamy High School. It's
- 41:14actually named after an Indian tribe in my town. I've kind of figured that.
- 41:16Yeah, So yeah, I did the morning news program there and then
- 41:22I did the marching band all four years of high school. Okay, all
- 41:25right, Well, I mean I'm always interested in talking to people about how
- 41:28they got here. Yeah, and it's and it's refreshing to me to hear.
- 41:31And when I say a young person, and that's kind of a running
- 41:34joke between me and Carrie is the age thing, because a couple of she
- 41:37and Jarret Lewis, who's a younger guy. I made the comment a couple
- 41:39of weeks ago. I came in, I said, good job kids,
- 41:42or something like that, and I hear Carrie screaming from the other end,
- 41:45going, I'm in thirty blank or whatever. You know. I won't give
- 41:47your age. I'll be thirty three in March, so you can do the
- 41:51math you said earlier what you you were born. So I appreciate still being
- 41:54called a kid. Well, I didn't know whether I had offended you or
- 41:57not. I was like, oh, man, I should probably maybe I
- 42:00watch that. I'm gonna get called it an HR again. Now it's fine.
- 42:01The kids were running those the kids the West Virginia Morning News. That's
- 42:05what you know. But what I was going to say was it was interesting
- 42:07to me, and it's it's kind of refreshing. And Jared's, you know,
- 42:10obviously younger than you are, to have some younger people that are interested
- 42:16in this meeting because there is this thought, I think Carrie that everybody says,
- 42:21oh, you know, radio is dead. Well radio is far from
- 42:23dead. And the media in general, journalism whatever, it's as strong as
- 42:30it ever was. It's just that the way sometimes that people obtain their information
- 42:36is a little bit different. We have as many listeners in radio as what
- 42:39we ever did, but what they're they're not always getting in the car and
- 42:44turning on five to eighty. They're listening on apps shows like this, or
- 42:49the morning news. You have to make them available at other times. And
- 42:52people, you guys do a great job with a podcast that you do,
- 42:54which is basically just a summary of all of the new stuff people. I
- 43:00have people that listen to my show that will say, yeah, I listened
- 43:02to them, I binge listen. You know, I listened to like four
- 43:07shows in a row. So media journalism whatever, is as live as it
- 43:10ever was. It was just the way that we obtain it has changed a
- 43:14little bit. It's so important and I always say this to get the younger
- 43:17generation involved in radio podcasting and bringing people like Jarrett and Catherine who are kind
- 43:24of in that younger age range, to really push Metro News and five eight
- 43:29whs forward into that next generation of listeners. Because I ask people who are
- 43:34in their twenties, I say, where do you get your news from?
- 43:37And a lot of them they did. They don't, you know, they're
- 43:38not always on Twitter known as x now, or they listen to you know,
- 43:44podcasts, or they go on TikTok actually, and so sometimes what you're
- 43:47seeing is news organizations turning to Instagram reels and tiktoks to have a little recap
- 43:53of the story of the day because that's where the young people are getting their
- 43:55news from. Yeah, you got and that's that's very important. What does
- 44:00let's carry who to say? Doing her spare time? Oh my spare time.
- 44:04I watched The Office and Friends and I call my mom at home.
- 44:08But no, I used to I don't do this as much. I used
- 44:12to teach at Capitol High School the marching band there, so that was years
- 44:16ago. But I really did like teaching color guard and dancing. And I
- 44:22like cooking. I'm a big I'm not that great of a cook, but
- 44:27I try to do ryan and I like eating. Yeah, so yeah,
- 44:32I like to try different different meals. What's your specialty before we go to
- 44:37break what's your specialty? I always turn to Italian. That's because I'm part
- 44:39of Italian So I do a pasta Bolognies that people love and it's with ground
- 44:45beef and all these Italian seasonings and tomato sauce. And I make my mom's
- 44:49homemade meatballs. She gave me the recipe. So yeah, anytime I'm asked
- 44:52to make a meal, that's my go to. Danny Jones just walked in.
- 44:58I mean, you never know who's going to show up here. Hey,
- 45:00Danny, I wouldn't even asked to come here. No, I was
- 45:04kind of I thought we had a restraining order. I'm gonna be on with
