- 0:00The Greek philosopher Plato, after deep consideration,
- 0:05reached the conclusion that some higher principle was real, which
- 0:09he called Forms or Ideas, and that the physical reality we see
- 0:14and experience is the result, not the cause.
- 0:19This concept is in consonance with the Vedic understanding.
- 0:24Even the Christian Bible notes that quote in the beginning was
- 0:28the word End Quote. All of these approaches, and
- 0:34many more from around the world and across numerous traditional,
- 0:37religious, philosophical, and spiritual directions, make it
- 0:42clear that the physical world is a derivative phenomenon of the
- 0:47higher source. Western psychology, in its
- 0:51earliest approaches, tries to define the meaning, direction
- 0:55and motivation for our lives in the external reality based in
- 1:00trauma and various drives of the lower nature, without ever
- 1:04taking into account the implications of the higher
- 1:07wisdom that the sages and thinkers throughout the ages
- 1:11have eventually embraced. The life we lead, the promptings
- 1:16we follow, the thoughts we think.
- 1:20The aspirations we experience do not originate in material
- 1:24substance, somehow trying to survive due to random
- 1:28combinations of chemicals making us what we are.
- 1:33Rather, they come from levels that are currently
- 1:35superconscient to our normal experience, which represent the
- 1:40idea, the Word, the light, or as some define it, God.
- 1:48In his book The Life Divine, Srioro Bindo identifies the
- 1:53basic human aspiration as a seeking after God, light,
- 1:58freedom, immortality. It is these basic drives that
- 2:04define the value and development of human life in general, as
- 2:09well as providing specific motivation to individuals as
- 2:13they awaken to a greater meaning for their existence.
- 2:19Once we recognize the wider range of the human existence,
- 2:23encompassing drives, energies, motivations, aspirations that
- 2:27are conscient to us as well as those that are subconscient and
- 2:33those that are superconscient, we cannot avoid expanding the
- 2:37focus of psychology to not simply try to fit all human life
- 2:42into a small part of the subconscient elements of our
- 2:45existence. Rather, we need to develop what
- 2:49Triorobindo calls a greater psychology that takes all the
- 2:54different planes and parts of our being into account and
- 2:58explores also the impacts of forces subliminal to our
- 3:03conscious awareness. Trying to define humanity by our
- 3:07subconscious animal drives is both unduly limited and a
- 3:13falsification that distorts our search for meaning and our
- 3:17understanding of the significance of life, and of our
- 3:21own lives in particular, Sri Robinto notes quote.
- 3:28I find it difficult to take these psychoanalysts at all
- 3:31seriously when they try to scrutinize spiritual experience
- 3:35by the flicker of their torchlights.
- 3:38Yet perhaps one ought to, for half knowledge is a powerful
- 3:41thing and can be a great obstacle to the coming in front
- 3:46of the true truth. This new psychology looks to me
- 3:50very much like children learning some summary and not very
- 3:54adequate alphabet, exulting and putting their abcd of the
- 4:00subconscious and the mysterious underground superego together,
- 4:06and imagining that their first book of obscure beginnings.
- 4:10CAT, Cat, TREE, Tree is the very heart of the real knowledge.
- 4:19They look from down, up and explain the higher lights by the
- 4:23lower obscurities. But the foundation of these
- 4:27things is above and not below. Upari Butna Isham, the
- 4:33superconscient, not the subconscient, is the true
- 4:38foundation of things. The significance of the Lotus is
- 4:42not to be found by analyzing the secrets of the mud from which it
- 4:46grows. Here.
- 4:48Its secret is to be found in the heavenly archetype of the Lotus
- 4:53that blooms forever in the light above.
- 4:57The self chosen field of these psychologists is besides poor,
- 5:01dark and limited. You must know the whole before
- 5:05you can know the part, and the highest before you can truly
- 5:09understand the lowest. That is the promise of the
- 5:13greater psychology awaiting its hour, before which these poor
- 5:18gropings will disappear and come to nothing.
