- 0:00Hey everyone, welcome back to another episode of More Than
- 0:02Before. I'm Nathan Cook.
- 0:02I'm excited to spend some time with you today as we jump into
- 0:06our topic today. Hey, let me ask you, are you a
- 0:08lifter or are you a leveller? You're one of the two.
- 0:13You're either someone that likes to lift people or you're someone
- 0:16that likes to level them out, whether that's with a a firm
- 0:21word or whether that's hopefully not physically.
- 0:25But there really are two types of people in the world and you
- 0:28got to choose what it is that you're going to be.
- 0:31Are you a person that lifts other people, that lifts
- 0:33yourself up, or are you the type of person that levels other
- 0:37people and levels yourself? And when I say level, I don't
- 0:40mean that kind of perfection level where you're trying to get
- 0:43it perfect. I mean, the level of a building
- 0:46where you destroy it, where you decimate it.
- 0:49Because here's what I know. You and I, we have opportunities
- 0:52every single day to lift or level other people.
- 0:56I hope that you'd lift other people every single chance you
- 0:59get. So let me give you 3 areas where
- 1:01you can focus on of whether you're lifting or you're
- 1:04leveling people. Number one, are you lifting or
- 1:07leveling yourself? What are the things that you say
- 1:11to yourself? Are you an uplifting person?
- 1:13Do you speak good things about you or are you negative?
- 1:17Are you negative, constantly focused on the bad things about
- 1:22you? Or maybe you focus on things
- 1:24that aren't even bad about you, but you constantly put yourself
- 1:27down. You use a lot of self
- 1:29deprecating humor. Here's what I know coming from
- 1:34experience. The more you speak I'll of
- 1:36yourself, the more I'll you actually become.
- 1:41Because here's where everything starts.
- 1:43Everything starts up in our mind.
- 1:45It starts where you think. And from that point it goes into
- 1:49one of two places. It goes into the way that you
- 1:51speak or goes into the way that you act.
- 1:55Now here's what I believe. I believe it starts with the
- 1:58thought and eventually makes it way its way out into a word,
- 2:02into a sentence, into a sentiment that comes out of your
- 2:06lips. And if you speak it enough, then
- 2:09it becomes something that you embody in your own life.
- 2:12Now you may not be speaking I'll about yourself in front of other
- 2:16people, but maybe in the quiet of your home, maybe in the quiet
- 2:19of your room, you say things that you would never say to
- 2:24someone else. You say them to yourself.
- 2:26Can I encourage you to stop talking that way to yourself?
- 2:30Stop leveling yourself out and start lifting yourself up.
- 2:35Now. This isn't a prideful thing.
- 2:37I don't want you to get prideful.
- 2:38Hey, you know I'm the most amazing thing.
- 2:40No, I'm just saying stop leveling yourself and lowering
- 2:44yourself because here's what I do know.
- 2:48You will rise to that level of thought, meaning you'll never
- 2:52outperform your own self-image. If you think that you're a bad
- 2:55husband or a bad wife, guess what?
- 2:57You're going to show up in life trying to prove that correct.
- 3:03If you think you're a bad cook, you're going to show up and
- 3:07you're going to meet that expectation.
- 3:09If you think I'm bad at sales, I can't have a relationship, I'll
- 3:13never have kids, A fill in the blank of what you believe you
- 3:18are not and what you can't do, you will rise to that level.
- 3:23You'll never outperform your own self-image.
- 3:25So first of all, what are you saying to yourself?
- 3:27Are you lifting or leveling? Second of all, what are you
- 3:30saying to other people? Are you lifting or leveling
- 3:33other people? As we go about our life, we
- 3:35interact with so many people in our day we don't even think
- 3:38about it. As we go out of our house we see
- 3:40our neighbors. Are you lifting them or leveling
- 3:42them? Are you speaking good words over
- 3:45them or are you speaking negative words?
- 3:48Are you speaking good things to your spouse, to your kids, to
- 3:53your parents, to your friends, to your coworkers, to the person
- 3:57that you meet in line behind you while you're going to the
- 4:01grocery store? Are you speaking life or are you
- 4:03leveling them down? It is easy to level people in
- 4:09our life. You see, I didn't know that I
- 4:11was leveling my wife for a long time because we would go in to
- 4:14cook in the kitchen and she'd start cutting something.
- 4:16I'd say, hey, you know, if you don't want to cut your finger,
- 4:19you could do it this way. Or maybe the measurement was
- 4:25slightly off and I would say, hey, you know what, if you used
- 4:27grams, you measured out the grams.
- 4:28We have these really nice scales that I got.
- 4:30You know, if we, if you did that, it'd be consistent every
- 4:32single time and you'd be able to make these micro improvements
- 4:35and adjustments. You see, to me, I thought I was
- 4:38helping her, but what I was actually doing, I wasn't
- 4:41helping, I was hurting, I wasn't lifting her up.
- 4:45I was actually leveling her down.
- 4:48Now that doesn't mean that you can't give correction and
- 4:52feedback to people, but there is something about understanding
- 4:55whether or not that person feels and thinks that you are lifting
- 5:00them or that you are leveling them.
- 5:03What do you do? What is your common go to?
- 5:06Are you the negative Nancy that comes in the room and has
- 5:10something negative to say? Or do you have something
- 5:12positive, encouraging, uplifting and edifying for other people to
- 5:15listen to? Now, we don't always have to be
- 5:19positive. There's a time for correction.
- 5:21There's a time for feedback. But can I encourage you like I'm
- 5:25encouraging myself As I look at my own life, I want to be
- 5:28someone that lifts others. When I see my kids do something
- 5:31that's boneheaded and it happens a lot, I don't want to be the
- 5:35person that levels them out. I want to be the person that
- 5:38comes in and says, hey, I love what you did here, but here's
- 5:41what we could do differently. Are you a lifter or a leveler
- 5:46with other people specifically, directly, meaning when you're
- 5:51directly interacting with them? That goes to our Third Point
- 5:54here. The Third Point is, are you
- 5:56lifting or leveling people when they're not around?
- 6:00You know what I'm talking about, the gossipers, people that like
- 6:02to talk behind other people's back.
- 6:04My wife and I, because we've been doing marriage coaching for
- 6:07a while, one of the things that we find is it's really easy to
- 6:11be in groups of other people and those people will dog on their
- 6:15spouse, meaning they'll say negative things about their
- 6:17spouse when they're not around. I always want to speak life
- 6:22about my wife, how amazing she is, how great she is with her
- 6:25kids, how hard she works. And you know what I hear from
- 6:29other guys, Not a lot of other guys.
- 6:31I know quite a few good guys that actually lift their wives
- 6:34up. But I have been around guys that
- 6:36level their wives when they're not there.
- 6:39I've been around women who level their husbands when they're not
- 6:42there. Do you level people when they're
- 6:46not in the room or do you lift and elevate them?
- 6:52I hope you lift and elevate them.
- 6:53So you have three different people that you're talking to
- 6:55you, you're talking to yourself might be insane, kind of like
- 6:58me. You have the people that you're
- 7:01specifically directly talking to every day and you have the
- 7:03people that you speak about when they're not around.
- 7:07James chapter 3 verse 2 says for we all stumble in many ways and
- 7:12if anyone doesn't stumble in what he says, he is a perfect
- 7:15man able to bridle his whole body.
- 7:18That is so powerful. Understand that that if you can
- 7:21control your tongue, you control your entire body, but how do you
- 7:27control your tongue? You control what you think.
- 7:31That's a lot harder to control what you think.
- 7:33So to all starts with a thought and he continues on and I love
- 7:37the two examples he gives. He gives the example of a ship
- 7:41that is powerful, that is pushed by the wind.
- 7:44It's steered by a small little rudder on the back of the boat,
- 7:50and the tongue is like that rudder.
- 7:53But what I also love is, he says that the tongue is also like a
- 7:56small spark in a forest that sets a whole forest ablaze.
- 8:03Now there's one of two ways that you can set something ablaze.
- 8:07It's either controlled, that's in a way that's beneficial, that
- 8:12lifts and helps, or the other way is it's destructive and out
- 8:17of control. Your tongue today, my tongue
- 8:22today. Are we speaking fire into people
- 8:26that warms their heart and encourages them to keep moving
- 8:30forward? Or are we speaking words that
- 8:33spark a fire uncontrolled inside of someone that burns their life
- 8:38to the ground? It all comes with
- 8:43intentionality. When you're stocking a fire, do
- 8:46you have it in a place where it's safe, where it's
- 8:49controlled? Do you have the right timber?
- 8:53There are a lot of things that go into the aspect of what we
- 8:58say, what we think. If you can control your tongue,
- 9:03then you can control your entire body.
- 9:06Now, it's very difficult to do that.
- 9:08We're all going to make mistakes.
- 9:09We're all going to fall short. I do it every single day.
- 9:11But here's what I do now is that if you want to have more than
- 9:14before, you have to examine the fruit of your mouth.
- 9:19What is coming out of your mouth?
- 9:21Is the fruit that you speak, Is it sweet?
- 9:25Is it edifying? Is it nourishing?
- 9:29Or is the fruit that you speak sour?
- 9:32Is it bitter? Is it like Gull?
- 9:36Does it taste horrible? The more you speak something,
- 9:40the more you see it around you. Catch that?
- 9:45The more you speak something, the more you see it around you.
- 9:49You're going to find what you're looking for.
- 9:52What are you speaking to? Your friends?
- 9:54What are you speaking to your coworkers?
- 9:56What are you speaking to? Your spouse?
- 9:57What are you speaking to? The person that's at the gas
- 10:00station, what are you speaking to?
- 10:05The homeless person that you meet on the street, The neighbor
- 10:08that you run into, Are you speaking to Lift or are you
- 10:14speaking to Level? I hope you're speaking to Lift
- 10:19and if you're not, I encourage you to start to examine the
- 10:22fruit of what comes out of your mouth and to start to plant the
- 10:27seeds in your mind that will eventually start to produce,
- 10:34produce that will serve the people that you speak into.
- 10:40So choose to speak life, lift others, and start experiencing
- 10:45more than before. I hope you enjoyed this episode.
- 10:49Share this, like this and leave me a comment.
- 10:52I'd love to know what you think. Are you a lifter?
- 10:54Are you a leveler? What kind of fruit do you have?
- 10:56Until next time, remember to be more and see more and experience
- 10:59more than before.
