- 1:39So by the time you folks that listen to this show and watch it
- 1:44in the, you know, weekly podcast, you get a chance to see
- 1:50if we have any live comments over here on Patreon and or if
- 1:54we have anybody that that joins. As of right now, I don't have
- 1:58anybody that's joining me today, but this is a monthly recurring
- 2:03thing. So when you become a Chieftain,
- 2:05tierpatron@patreon.com/midgard musings, one of the perks and
- 2:09benefits of doing that is you get to join me on a monthly live
- 2:15stream for, you know, about an hour for however long you want.
- 2:18If you just want to pop in, you know, leave, come back, you
- 2:23know, whatever you have that access, you have that, you know,
- 2:27what do you call it benefit to, to, to engage with me on screen,
- 2:33ask questions, talk about, you know, things that may be on your
- 2:37mind or heart with regards to heathenry.
- 2:41But they but they are once a month on Monday evenings at 7:00
- 2:45PM Central time. So if you want to head over to
- 2:49patreon.com/midgard Musings and become a Chieftain Tear or above
- 2:53patron today, this is part of what you get as a benefit or a
- 2:56perk. So yeah, hopefully this goes OK.
- 3:01I'll be kind of switching back and forth just to make sure that
- 3:05if there are any live viewers watching this, that they'll be
- 3:09acknowledged in the comments section.
- 3:11But we're just going to keep rock rocking and rolling as per
- 3:13normal. So for all of you that do come
- 3:17to patreon.com and sign up at the sculpture and above, now is
- 3:19my time to congratulate and thank you for your patronage by
- 3:23name. So John Deeson, Michaela, Adam
- 3:27Cage, Chris Martino, Michael Thacker, you folks that have
- 3:34joined at the scald or above tier on Patreon, your your
- 3:38support is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.
- 3:41And yeah, aside from that, it's it's April now.
- 3:47We are less than a month away from the worldwide release of
- 3:51Till the Final Twilight Dies. It's a musical project that I've
- 3:54been working on the last several months.
- 3:56Yes, it is leveraging the use of AI software, but lyrically,
- 4:01rhythmically, spiritually, if you will, the spirit of the
- 4:04music and and whatnot is is originated by myself again,
- 4:09lyrics. I've I've spent time to to to
- 4:12put things to words and then the AI helped kind of write the song
- 4:17through, you know, prompts and this and that.
- 4:18But anyway, you now have just a few weeks left to get your
- 4:22pre-orders in. So the links for that are going
- 4:25to be anywhere in this podcast. So if you're listening to this
- 4:28on the audio streaming platforms, go ahead and go to
- 4:31the, you know, show notes section.
- 4:33There's a link for how you can get your pre-order in now, but I
- 4:38think it'll leave it's the last weekend of April right before
- 4:41because the worldwide release of it is dropping on May 1st.
- 4:44So you've got about a week prior to that to get your pre-orders
- 4:48in and then on May 1st you can buy it.
- 4:52You can purchase it. It is not going to be streaming
- 4:54anywhere on like as far as you know, Spotify or any of those
- 5:00other ones. But I do have all of the WAV
- 5:03files in a folder that when you buy the album, you get all those
- 5:09WAV files. So you can download them, listen
- 5:10to them locally on any number of the devices that you use for
- 5:14listening to music. But the pre-orders come with a 2
- 5:19tracks early, right? So you get that you get a pre
- 5:23release price or pre-order price.
- 5:28So again, check that out. It's links for that are are down
- 5:32there in the show notes. And for those of you watching
- 5:34this on Patreon, it's it's it's going to be posted down in the
- 5:37what do you call it description area of the video.
- 5:43In addition to that, I've got my book out The Heron that Flies to
- 5:47Hell or the Saga of the Heron that Flies to Hell available on
- 5:50multiple streaming or what do you call it, like audio book
- 5:53sites. You can get it digital or you
- 5:56can go to Lulu and get a physical copy.
- 5:59So those links are going to be down there as well.
- 6:04And then the only other thing that I think I want to mention
- 6:06as far as you know, things that you may have missed,
- 6:09announcements you may have missed in the last week or two
- 6:12is I am I, I've got a, a, a Class A course, a nine month
- 6:18long rune course open up for enrollment now.
- 6:23It's called the Living Food Arc. And I got some announcement
- 6:27videos that I'm going to be linking in the show notes as
- 6:30well or description area of the video if you're watching this on
- 6:32Patreon. So in case you missed those
- 6:34announcements, you can click on those to find out more, or you
- 6:38can go to randomheathenramblings.com/the
- 6:41Living Food Arc. This is not your typical rune
- 6:46course. It's it's not, you know, just
- 6:47learn what the Elder Futhark mean and how to use them in
- 6:50castings or readings. This is more of an
- 6:53apprenticeship that you'll be studying under me for nine
- 6:57months to learn my method of casting runes that I've used
- 7:01hundreds and hundreds of times in public settings, private
- 7:05settings. It's proven to be very useful,
- 7:10very beneficial, very accurate, and it is as closely as I could
- 7:14have recently, or it is as closely as I have been able to
- 7:17come up with over the years. Not just recently, but as
- 7:21closely as I've been able to come over the years of reading
- 7:24rooms, nearly a decade that is as closely resembling what is
- 7:29described in source material like Tacitus, pertaining to the
- 7:34way that the dramatic peoples would read runes or read or or
- 7:38or use divination. Not necessarily read runes
- 7:40because the sources don't specifically say that divination
- 7:44and runes were, you know, going hand in hand.
- 7:49But anyway, more on that at randomheathenramblings.com/the
- 7:54Living Futhark. So, yeah, now that we've got all
- 7:59that housekeeping stuff out of the way again, I don't have any
- 8:03and I don't have any of my patrons today checking in, at
- 8:07least not yet. So we'll see, you know, if that
- 8:09happens or not. This is kind of the first month
- 8:12of, you know, people getting used to the fact that this is a
- 8:15thing. So that and it's also Monday
- 8:17night, so there might not be a whole lot of people interested
- 8:20in getting on camera or being heard on on screen or whatever.
- 8:23But we're just going to keep rolling with it because whether
- 8:26or not those folks are here, we still have a show to go to put
- 8:30on, right? So today's today's episode,
- 8:33Episode 13, as a matter of fact, is going to be on a topic that
- 8:38has gotten talked about constantly gets talked about, I
- 8:41think, and especially in heathen spaces.
- 8:45And that is the topic of the oath or oaths in the modern
- 8:49world, especially understanding a bit more about the strength,
- 8:54the power, the significance, the consequence, you know, all the
- 8:58things about oaths from a Heathen perspective that that
- 9:03meant something at a time that here now and today are are
- 9:10people in general too casual about the, you know, the term
- 9:17oath? Do they understand even what it
- 9:20means from a Heathen context and from a Heathen worldview?
- 9:27So, you know, that was that was what I was going to be talking
- 9:32about today, with or without people.
- 9:33So whether we've got, you know, live viewers, from the looks of
- 9:37things seems to be pretty empty on the Patreon side.
- 9:41But this is only going out to my Chieftain tier Patreon.
- 9:45So if you do end up tuning in and and catching this, you know,
- 9:50please comment. But either way, let's get
- 9:53rocking and rolling, you know? So I believe that with Oaths,
- 10:00it's pretty obvious that at one point in time, these were things
- 10:07that were done instead, because it was, it was during a time
- 10:11right when when the person's word could be leveraged in a way
- 10:17it could cost you your life, right?
- 10:22And I'm not talking metaphorically, I'm not talking
- 10:26socially. I mean, I'm talking literally.
- 10:30You, if your oath was bad, like if you broke your oath and, and,
- 10:35and you didn't fulfill it, then that was a surefire way to
- 10:39become outlawed. And during those days and at
- 10:43that time, you know, medieval Scandinavian and earlier, if you
- 10:49were outlawed, you were just about as good as that because
- 10:51you didn't have the protection of society.
- 10:56You didn't have the protection of your tribe, of your people.
- 10:58You were on your own. And that meant that you were
- 11:02susceptible to being robbed, vandalized, killed, even.
- 11:05I mean, it was fair game. So your life was at stake if
- 11:09your oath was not kept. You know, So understanding that
- 11:14and realizing that in a heathen context, when we talk about
- 11:17oaths even now and today, you know, we're not, we're not
- 11:19talking about just casual promises, casual statements.
- 11:24We're talking about binding forces, right?
- 11:26We're talking about things that connect and bind men, people
- 11:32together in a social, spiritual and personal kind of a kind of a
- 11:38thing, or at least I think we should now and today, because
- 11:44that's what it was seen as at one time in this culture.
- 11:52But you know, how many of us now and today, even without even
- 11:56thinking, you know, use such words as I promise, I swear, you
- 12:00know, I've got you, right? All of these affirming words
- 12:03that we just tend to throw around casually without even
- 12:06thinking about their deeper meaning.
- 12:09And I've talked in the past, too, about, you know, oaths
- 12:12being more than just a promise and that, you know, to say
- 12:15something like I promise and then, you know, even I vow,
- 12:17right? Or I swear you know the words
- 12:21have power and our our dramatic heathen ancestors understood
- 12:25this in their society. So for us to now and today go
- 12:32through our existence and give any less weight or, or, or deny
- 12:40the weight and the value of these words, I believe is, is,
- 12:44is doing somewhat of an injustice to the culture.
- 12:48It's it's not preserving a tradition in any good way that
- 12:52should be preserved. If, if this is how we're going
- 12:54to conduct ourselves right as people in that that identify as
- 13:00heathen. This is an important part of it.
- 13:03It's honor bound, You know, you, you become honor bound by these,
- 13:07by these things, you know, so it's, it's probably one of the
- 13:11most important, if not the most important core values that I see
- 13:16needing to be really understood and focused on, right?
- 13:22Because people nowadays that, that are not thinking too much
- 13:27on the deeper context, the deep, you know, the weight that saying
- 13:33things like, I promise, I swear, like if you're going to say
- 13:35these things, then don't break those promises.
- 13:41And that that is something that I've seen become all too common
- 13:47in the modern world is, you know, people will say things
- 13:51like that, break those words of, of commitment at any moment,
- 13:56that things just become too inconvenient or not easy or not,
- 14:01you know, becomes too challenging.
- 14:04Becomes too. Yeah, becomes too hard, becomes
- 14:06too challenging, becomes too inconvenient.
- 14:08And next thing you know, where are you when you said you were
- 14:12going to be there, you know? Right.
- 14:15So the question I want to explore in this episode today is
- 14:18like, have we become too casual with oaths?
- 14:22And what does that cost us as individuals, as people, as as,
- 14:26you know, heathens? So of course, as always, if you
- 14:33have thoughts about this and you're catching this, either,
- 14:37you know, doesn't look like we're going to have any live
- 14:39viewers. But if you if you're catching
- 14:40this later on and you want to weigh in with your thoughts,
- 14:43I've been seeing some more comments coming across on
- 14:45Patreon, which is great. So if you're watching this,
- 14:49sorry, not on Patreon, but on Spotify.
- 14:51If you're listening to this on the Spotify platform and you
- 14:54want to comment what your thoughts are on all this below,
- 14:57feel free. Or if you have a thought that
- 14:59you want to share off the platform and you want to just
- 15:03reach out to me directly, you know, feel free to do that.
- 15:06Best way to do so would be to head over to, you know, my
- 15:10e-mail address, midgardmusingstn@gmail.com.
- 15:15And as we, as I said, something about that guests and what not
- 15:19coming up. We've got a guest popping in
- 15:22right now and you see him on screen.
- 15:25You don't hear him just yet. He's he's working on it, I
- 15:27think. But yeah, we're going to, we're
- 15:31going to let my guest here, John Deeson, get himself situated
- 15:38because, and this is great timing, like I said before, you
- 15:41know, they're not people show up is, you know, remains to be
- 15:44seen. It's kind of one of those things
- 15:45where I just let the ball roll and yeah, keep it rocking and
- 15:52rolling. Keep it going.
- 15:55So, yeah, I don't know. I can't hear you, John, if
- 15:57you're talking or you're trying to talk to me.
- 16:00There we go. Is that a little better?
- 16:01Oh, that's way better, man. That's that's so much better.
- 16:04In fact, I can hear you now. Yeah, no, I sit there.
- 16:07I saw you went live and I'm like, oh shit, you know what?
- 16:10I'm a pop man. Yeah, yeah, man, I mean, this is
- 16:13and I'm glad you did, bro, because and you know, just for
- 16:16the folks that we know, so we're live on Patreon.
- 16:19It's it's it's at the tier that you're at and below between
- 16:23Houston and tier. So for the folks that that catch
- 16:28this live, you know, you guys hear me talk about my my skulled
- 16:31and above tier patrons. John Deeson here is is one of
- 16:34those folks that have own support for the show and and is
- 16:38now here you get to see his, his, his, his visit.
- 16:43My ugly mug. His ugly mug.
- 16:45But when I say bro, like when I say brother, right?
- 16:48Like, you guys know, like I don't toss this term around
- 16:51lightly. We're going to, you know,
- 16:52talking about terms getting tossed around lightly today.
- 16:55This isn't one term that I use lightly.
- 16:57It's it's I call him brother because of real reasons.
- 17:00And it's great to have you here, brother, and I appreciate you
- 17:02popping in and you're welcome to stay as long as you want.
- 17:05You know it's. Oh absolutely.
- 17:07I got some time to kill. So it's one of those I just
- 17:10wrapped up at the gym. So like timing the weird is
- 17:13weird. The weird do be doing, yeah.
- 17:17But it's one of those like, yeah, anyone sitting here
- 17:20listening, I was, when I met Jesse first time, I ended up
- 17:26calling him brother. And it was a educating
- 17:31experience to say the least for me because there's one of those,
- 17:38you know, everyone's like, oh, brother, brother, brother, this.
- 17:40And you know, of sister that. I feel like if you're doing
- 17:43those kind of terms, especially since we had our talk and it's
- 17:47one of those, I mean, the weird got weird.
- 17:49And our webs did intertwine, but it's, it's, it's one of those
- 17:54things that like I, I've adopted that same policy that you have
- 17:59also brought forth. So it's one of those like, I'm
- 18:03not, you know, I don't refer to anyone as bro brother.
- 18:07I mean, you've got to now earn that term.
- 18:10Yeah. In in my eyes.
- 18:13For sure man. It's don't know, don't bro me
- 18:16unless you know me kind of thing.
- 18:20But yeah, man, I don't know if you saw the the the note I put
- 18:25out to to everybody just kind of like what we were going to what
- 18:29I planned on talking about today.
- 18:30But you're here, so the time is yours.
- 18:32I was I was getting into the concept of oaths in the modern
- 18:38world. And are we as becoming too
- 18:40casual with the term right because.
- 18:43Oh. Yeah.
- 18:45No, that's that's good. Yeah, because what I've seen,
- 18:48and I don't know about you because I know you're in a
- 18:50you're in a your own heathen space.
- 18:52You know, you've got people up in your area that you spend a
- 18:55lot of time around. And so you're seeing the social
- 18:57dynamic kind of form in a newer kind of kindred model and and
- 19:02all of this and get get get, you know, that term or the oath,
- 19:06right, That gets obviously spoken a lot about within
- 19:09heathen spaces. And I was saying earlier, right,
- 19:12How in in ancient times, or even in, you know, the like medieval
- 19:17and and before times when, when an oath was stated or given, it
- 19:22was, you know, if you failed in that, like it, it could cost you
- 19:26your life. And that's not a metaphor.
- 19:28That's not a you know, that's not a social, you know, his
- 19:31reputation gets tanked. Like yes, that, but also you are
- 19:34literally at the at the mercy of anybody who wants to take
- 19:39advantage of you because your protection is gone.
- 19:41Your honor has been lost. You're now an outlaw and anybody
- 19:45can do anything they want to you free of repercussion.
- 19:49You're outlaws, which means, hey, if I want to knock you off
- 19:53or whatever and and rob you and whatever, like they can do that.
- 19:57They could do that so. So go ahead.
- 20:01Sorry. I was going to say with the
- 20:04group that I'm a part of. Vlad time, we are not a oath
- 20:10bound because of the gravitas and the, the weight of, of
- 20:16putting forth an oath. That's one of those that was,
- 20:20you know, explained to me thoroughly the the elders of
- 20:25that community. Let me know.
- 20:26Hey, this is not one of those, you know, you're not, you're not
- 20:30oath bound. We're just growing the community
- 20:34and making it one of those better for all.
- 20:38I'm parking so I'll be a little more stable here in a second.
- 20:41Oh, you're. Good man out there bro, like
- 20:45because you know the people out here, they can't drive with two
- 20:48eyes on the road on a good day. It, it keeps me well, well busy
- 20:53enough, but it's one of those being a non oath bound is, is
- 21:02wild. I get, well, I, I shouldn't say
- 21:05wild. It's one of those.
- 21:06It's definitely a more modern approach to it.
- 21:10I will say, granted, there's like no certain oaths that, that
- 21:16if I take I, I know, I know that that weight to it.
- 21:24It's you know, I, I, I'm not sure with the brotherhood and
- 21:28all that. I I view that as an oath bound
- 21:31in my own personal respect. Yeah.
- 21:35And. That's the big thing too is, you
- 21:37know, we obviously have different social circles in and
- 21:41out of our heathen world views, but if they kind of get
- 21:45interwoven in some ways without taking over, right?
- 21:48It's integration. I think is is probably a good
- 21:50integration interweaving of things because and I think it's
- 21:54important too for people that maybe like you're you're in a
- 21:56situation or or you're within a social construct that with
- 22:00Glotsheim that is not an oath bound structure of things,
- 22:03right. Whereas others might be 1 is not
- 22:07right or wrong, but true. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 22:10But I think it's important that do we that people that do hear
- 22:13the two difference understand what we're talking about with
- 22:17regards to oath, because oath thing and an oath right.
- 22:20It's not just a strong statement, it's a binding
- 22:22commitment. You know what I mean?
- 22:25It's not like you can, you know, casually, I was saying this
- 22:29before you came on, you know, like the casualness that people
- 22:32tend to have when they say things like I swear this or I
- 22:34promise that, or I got you or whatever.
- 22:36Like, man, at one point in time when you said stuff like that,
- 22:40you were held up to meet, like to do what it took to keep your
- 22:45word. It wasn't still casual.
- 22:48And then the way people nowadays tend to, if they say things like
- 22:52that, and then when when they need to get you, when they need
- 22:55to have you back, where are they?
- 22:57Yes, what are they doing? They're not there.
- 23:00And it's like, well, you just where was that, you know?
- 23:05That yes, that's a lot of power in that and that I I've been
- 23:11invited to groups where it was, you know, hey, it's a oath bound
- 23:14group and all that. It's one of those my life is
- 23:17busy enough, like I've got gymnastics, I've got markets,
- 23:22small business owner on top of a actual 9:00 to 5:00.
- 23:25So it's one of those I can't dedicate each time to each
- 23:30weekend. It's one of those like I need
- 23:32months worth of advance. That way I can plan accordingly.
- 23:37And it's it's one of those sometimes the events, you know,
- 23:40do come up. OK, yeah, we're having one, but
- 23:42that's two weeks and a notice. And it's like, well, I've got,
- 23:46I've got so much on the schedule for that in this two weeks that
- 23:51I don't know, I can then make it.
- 23:53And then it's like, well, it's oath, but you know, you're oath
- 23:55bound or that's that's that's why I've never took an oath with
- 24:01a few of the local groups that are here, just because it's I
- 24:05don't want to go against what my word would be.
- 24:08And if I say I'm going to do something, I do everything that
- 24:12I can to do it. So if it's if it's one of those
- 24:16things that I can't put a for sure, guaranteed stamp time
- 24:20approval, we're ready to go, then I can't, I can't do that
- 24:25full commitment because then that's me breaking a tie and
- 24:29then potentially ruining friendships, ruining
- 24:33relationships. Oh yeah.
- 24:35I'm, I'm, you know. Oh, yeah.
- 24:38No, this is good. I've seen it happen.
- 24:40I've, I've lived through things like that happening because, you
- 24:43know, you do, you bring up a very good point.
- 24:44You're, you are not the only person that obviously has life
- 24:48commitments. You're a father, you're a, a
- 24:50husband, You're a, you know, again, you've got a, a
- 24:52commitment to your job and then you've got another small
- 24:55business that you're helping maintain.
- 24:58And then, you know, the commitments with your kids and
- 25:01their activities, right. And that's where I think, you
- 25:05know, society is different now than it was back then.
- 25:10The, the, the society and the way that people behaved and
- 25:15acted and interacted was much tighter.
- 25:18There was, you know, I'm in Middle Tennessee, down in
- 25:21Murfreesboro and, and, you know, you're up in Clarksville almost
- 25:24two hours away from me. That would be like a, you know,
- 25:28a day's ride or a day's walk, you know, and to, to, in, in
- 25:33way, in way back when people were much closer together.
- 25:36So the, the social construct of things was much different and
- 25:40therefore the oath bound kind of construct.
- 25:46First of all, I think it's also worth pointing out that I in
- 25:50most of the sources and in most of the the stories, the lore,
- 25:53the sagas, you know, when an oath is given, it's usually not
- 25:58always, but it's usually done by men in a kind of war band
- 26:05setting. So it's usually oaths of truth
- 26:08or loyalty from the the thanes or the the, you know, the
- 26:13soldiers and what not the the war ban to their war chief,
- 26:16right. And there's this understanding
- 26:19of reciprocity that I've got your back always and you've got
- 26:22mine. So it's very, it was very
- 26:23militant. It was very, you know, honor
- 26:26bound and and and stuff. So I think most of the context
- 26:29of things that we see from those sources are that it was, you
- 26:33know, a lot of times a, a war band setting or a war band
- 26:37situation. And then you've also got other
- 26:40situations too that, you know, like it, there's a saga, the the
- 26:45hair voter saga or Hegrix. It's there.
- 26:49That's kind of like where you, if you ever read or learned
- 26:52about swearing an oath on a boar, the sacred boar at Yule.
- 26:58That's that's where that that's, that's a source where that
- 27:01tradition comes from, because you know, the, the boar was a
- 27:06first of all, the boar was sacred to the Germanic people
- 27:08for a number of reasons, but especially for Frayer, right to
- 27:14the Swedes and, and I think the Danes, maybe even, but the
- 27:17Frayer was kind of like the embodiment in the boar.
- 27:19It was, was Frayer, right? So you, you swore your oaths and
- 27:24it was almost like doing so with the, the presence of, of the
- 27:29gods, the presence of divinity in physical form as this bore.
- 27:32And then that bore was sacrificed.
- 27:34You then consumed it. You took the power of the God
- 27:36within you, you know what I mean?
- 27:38So it was all very ceremonial, very ritualistic and much
- 27:44different. Now you know what I mean?
- 27:45Look, it's like you said, you know, if, if, if you all you,
- 27:47you all of a sudden join a, a group or a community that that
- 27:51has this oath structure in it. And then, you know, every
- 27:56Tuesday you guys get on a call or every once a month you meet
- 27:59and it's like, well, if that's what we're doing, then you're
- 28:02oath bound to do it. What happens when your family
- 28:04needs you and you have other higher obligations?
- 28:06It's like, what are you going to be looked at by your kindred or
- 28:09your group? Should you not show up?
- 28:11Now, I'm not the spokesperson for Heathenry all the time and
- 28:15for everywhere, but my opinion on that is if anybody were to do
- 28:21that and then hold you in a negative way because you took
- 28:24your obligations to your family as a higher one to them, they
- 28:28need to be kicked to the curb because they don't understand
- 28:32this the, the, the importance of, of where things are, you
- 28:35know? I agree with that and it's one
- 28:39of those I think a lot too. It does come with that kind of
- 28:42militaristic, you know, ideally the the shield of arms, it's a
- 28:46band of brothers. It's something like that.
- 28:49But like you said, if there's one of those things that it's
- 28:51like, hey, can I cuss? Yeah, yeah.
- 28:57Yeah, OK, so so it's one of those if I'm going through some
- 29:02pretty major shit and it's like, and it's like, hey, I've got
- 29:09prime example 2 weekends ago with my son.
- 29:13If we're all together and I get a call saying, hey, this has
- 29:16happened to your kid and I have to drop everything and run.
- 29:20And then I am ostracized because of that.
- 29:24I can assure you I would no longer have been a part of it.
- 29:28But it's also one of those I would have also seeked to see
- 29:34whoever was saying, you know, well, if you're going to
- 29:38prioritize, prioritize them over us.
- 29:43Yeah, I'm but, but for me, that military, that that instinct and
- 29:48I know when oats are spoked and everything like that, it's it's
- 29:51a it's a deep time together. And it's one of those times
- 29:53where you feel it in the spirit in your body.
- 29:57I mean, you feel it everywhere. But also, are you carrying it on
- 30:04like it traditionally should be? If it's, you know, let's say
- 30:08Jesse, man, I, I need, I need you here.
- 30:13I have a feeling without a shadow of doubt that you would
- 30:16be like, where are we meeting shovels needed, You know, who's
- 30:21driving? And it's it's one of those that
- 30:24feeling, and I hope you do feel the same, but it's one of those
- 30:27going through and building. It's an unspoken oath.
- 30:30But nonetheless, it's one of those the I've got your back.
- 30:33You've got mine in a much truer sense.
- 30:38And not to not to negate, you know, if anyone is going to
- 30:42listen, comment, chime in, not to negate any oaths that people
- 30:46have put out there. I'm not I'm not a fan of doing
- 30:51oaths that are that are like, hey, we're precedent over
- 30:55everything. If you can't, like you said, to
- 30:58have that open mind or you cannot see that, hey, you get to
- 31:03know me. You know, my family is key part
- 31:07of my life built it up. Happy home, happy life, happy
- 31:12kids, happy wife, all of it. Shoot the dogs, even just living
- 31:17his best, best life. But it's one of those, you know,
- 31:22coming over stuff like that. You're entering my house.
- 31:25My whole it's, it's, it's just a love and embrace and it's
- 31:29something like that. It's, it's, it's a lot of an
- 31:32unspoken oath that I do hold. Myself personally.
- 31:36Versus, you know, sitting there saying, you know, hey, Jesse, I
- 31:39swear to you this or hey, you know, glad time I.
- 31:43Swear that. This I don't.
- 31:45I don't want to do that kind of oath work because life is life
- 31:50and it all changes so fast. Yeah, and you know when you.
- 31:56Mention that with, you know, about your child, like, and, and
- 31:59you say, you know, if, if the situation was like, you know,
- 32:02somebody thought less of you for having to take that
- 32:06responsibility over theirs. I mean, why weren't they going
- 32:10with you to take care of this? Like, I'm right beside what do
- 32:14you need me to do? How can I shift the whole thing
- 32:16where it's not about you being there for me.
- 32:18It's now I got to be there for you because that's, that's
- 32:20really and truly, honestly, I think the, the, the backbone of,
- 32:24of just good relationships, but especially in Heathenry is this,
- 32:28it's reciprocal, you know, so I'm not just expecting you to be
- 32:31there for me when I need you. You're expecting me to be there
- 32:34for you when you need me. And there's this, you know,
- 32:37understanding of, again, we live in a time where our obligations
- 32:41are ours. And I understand that just
- 32:43because I might be having a bad day or something that if you
- 32:46know, you might you, he, they, whatever might not be able to
- 32:49just drop what they're doing and come to my aid at a moment's
- 32:52notice. And I don't hold that against
- 32:54them. We shouldn't hold that against
- 32:56people because they might have more important obligations to
- 32:59tend to. And that's, that's that's.
- 33:03Maintaining and. Preserving their honor with
- 33:06their people, you know, they're their innermost, right?
- 33:08So all these other relationships that we have, it's again, the
- 33:11way the world is and the way our relationships are with people.
- 33:14We can become so closely bound to people through, you know,
- 33:20through ritual, through, through actual work, you know, through,
- 33:23through being there for one another in our darkest times.
- 33:25And we've developed this, you know, feeling of kinship.
- 33:28I mean, I know you know that. Yeah.
- 33:32Without. Having to say.
- 33:34I'll be there for you. We just know that we have that
- 33:37feeling. There's that shared spirit
- 33:39between those types to know. Like I don't even have to put
- 33:43this in writing or swear an oath legally or anything like that,
- 33:47right? It's, it's understood, asking a
- 33:51fellow brother. To sit there and explain a
- 33:52situation that is happening with me that you know, is a hard one
- 33:58while I'm rushing, you know, to a hospital.
- 34:01It's one of those it's not a it's a shared bird.
- 34:05It reminds me around you. Everyone talks about, you know,
- 34:08a gift for gift and everything like that.
- 34:09But that's true. Really and truly, that's what I
- 34:13feel it the. Reciprocal.
- 34:16It's. The gift for the gift, it's one
- 34:17of those, hey, we're doing game night this weekend.
- 34:21Come on down. You know, we're going to do a
- 34:24game night at my place. I'm going to invite y'all.
- 34:27One of those. It's, you know, oaths are it's
- 34:32not just a a wartime in in today's world, it's not that
- 34:37kind of wartime thing. And I think with a lot of modern
- 34:41practices, it's viewed as it. Yeah, yeah.
- 34:46I see that too. You know, there there's that.
- 34:49Like I mean it might be stepping on.
- 34:50Some toes, but it's one of those if I'm not controversial,
- 34:53controversial, then I'm not being myself.
- 34:57You know that. And you know, you can be as
- 34:59upfront and as real as you want to be because again, this, this
- 35:04is, this goes out later on the week to everybody.
- 35:07So by the time people listen to this, it's already been, but
- 35:10like, I don't care anymore, man. I I say it how I feel and people
- 35:14want to chirp at me for it. First of all, I'm willing to
- 35:18learn and I'm willing to be taught if I'm wrong.
- 35:22I'm not going to be an asshole just for the sake of being an
- 35:24asshole, but I'm also not going to beat.
- 35:27Around the Bush. You know what?
- 35:28I mean, like, we're not wartime. We're not.
- 35:32We're not in the military, first of all, like I'm not.
- 35:34You live near 1 the military base.
- 35:36But you know what I mean. You're not a service member.
- 35:38I'm not. Yeah.
- 35:40But but I think like. Regardless of all that, one of
- 35:44the things that I keep going back to with the oath and it
- 35:48kind of ties into the right what you talking earlier about with
- 35:50the kinship titles, you know what I mean?
- 35:52And how it it takes doing of things to rely to be reliable to
- 35:59to feel like I can rely on you, you can rely on me.
- 36:02That's what honor and reputation and all that's about.
- 36:04It's tied directly to reliability.
- 36:08Can I rely on my people? Can they rely on me?
- 36:11Am I reliable? Are they reliable?
- 36:13And, and the only way that that is determined is through doing
- 36:19things and through tying Weir together.
- 36:22It's not about talking about it. Getting on a Zoom call once a
- 36:24month and saying Skull Brother this or that across the screen,
- 36:29you know what I mean? Yeah, no, it's.
- 36:31It's getting out there. It's, it's doing the damn work.
- 36:34It's, you know, it's, it's, it's, it is, it's, it's walking,
- 36:38it's spending the time, it's, it's getting weird in the weird
- 36:44together. And that's, that's one of those.
- 36:47I mean, I, I do think back to the first time I met you and all
- 36:50that and think, you know, conversations, we've had private
- 36:55conversations where, you know, I've got off crying.
- 36:58You have got off crying. And it's one of those like, are
- 37:00you OK? And it's like, yes, didn't know
- 37:05I needed it, but yes, you know, so it's one of those pulling.
- 37:13Pulling for each other with. Each other, you know we're In
- 37:17Sync where you know, if you're pulling, if you're pulling, I'm
- 37:20right there just rowing right beside you, just weathering this
- 37:24storm weather and whatever the fuck has been going on.
- 37:28That's it, man. And how?
- 37:29And how? Much of A you know, how, how,
- 37:32how much of A relief is that to feel when you've been so used to
- 37:36having to row your own ship? Oh my gosh.
- 37:41You know, You know what? I'm talking about like, yes,
- 37:44yes, you've got people. Beside you, but they're not
- 37:45doing. Anything, they're not
- 37:47participating, they're not being present.
- 37:48They're just, if anything, they're, they're like they're
- 37:50not doing anything or they're taking you for a ride and
- 37:53they're trying to get everything out of you that they can for
- 37:55themselves instead of giving anything in return.
- 38:00So yeah, that one, that one right there that that hits so,
- 38:05so hard and so close to home because it's one of those like,
- 38:09I don't, I didn't. Have my.
- 38:12Core group of people five years ago, 3-3.
- 38:17How long have we known each other?
- 38:193-4 years, Something like that. I think it's Shadowmoot.
- 38:24Yeah, because I think. Shadowmoot That that that was
- 38:28the that that that first shout out.
- 38:30Moot that. That Jerry and they all did at.
- 38:35Don's there the the hell bloat at the end of the night.
- 38:40I think that was 2022 or 2023. So yeah, about 3-4 years now,
- 38:473-4 years. So it's one of those.
- 38:48It's been a building relationship and it's one of
- 38:50those over this past year even we've got Tiger.
- 38:54It's, you know, it's one of those, one of those things that
- 39:00for me. Having.
- 39:02You, everyone else, you know, all those that I hold in my
- 39:07heart. I'm I'm not used to it.
- 39:12The stubborn side of me is one of those.
- 39:14I've been so stubborn, so headstrong with the no one.
- 39:19Else is doing it so. I'm just going to do it by
- 39:21myself, you know, one of those kind of scenarios and it this
- 39:28past March, this, this. Month has been.
- 39:32A rough one, but it's been one of those of being.
- 39:38Stubborn could. Have quite literally cost me
- 39:42everything could have cost me, you know ties friends, people I
- 39:48do call brothers that I don't you know I built this time up
- 39:52and if I would have remained in that same stubborn hard headed
- 39:56two years ago, I would have been like you know what fuck this I'm
- 39:59done I. Can handle it by.
- 40:03Myself, I don't need to burden y'all burden you burden anyone
- 40:07else because I can carry the weight.
- 40:11And it's taken me time, 35 years on the planet and realizing
- 40:17within the past year that not only can I not carry this burden
- 40:21alone, but I am not carrying this burden alone.
- 40:26I've got you and everyone else who are just that, that
- 40:30rocksteady just foundation for lockstep.
- 40:33It's one of those, you know, if you see me starting to stumble
- 40:37or something like that, there's, there's, you know, call outs.
- 40:42And when Spirit moves to speak to us, it's one of those, one of
- 40:47those things that, yeah, just, you know, yeah, we've, we've had
- 40:52our conversations. And I don't want to expose all
- 40:54that because it's that's mine and yours.
- 40:56And yeah, no, I get you man. It's, you know, we talk about
- 41:00how tough it's been just this month.
- 41:02You know, it's I, I reflect so much around my, you know, my,
- 41:07my, my, my people in, in the relationships that have grown
- 41:10between people like you and, and the other guys that we're all
- 41:14close to too. But you know, and, and, but the,
- 41:17there, it's where we, we feel, how we feel about each other.
- 41:20But, you know, other people are closer than others in some
- 41:23different ways, But when, when push comes to shove, we're still
- 41:28all equal there. What I mean, we all come to
- 41:32that, to that, you know, if we, if we see someone struggling,
- 41:35it's, hey, what's what's going on?
- 41:37Right? It's not, it's not to shame
- 41:39anybody. Sometimes, sometimes
- 41:41encouragement comes in the form of a, a pat on the back and
- 41:45sometimes it comes in the form of a kick in the ass.
- 41:48But it's never to be, you know, it's never to be malicious.
- 41:52It's never to be hurtful. It's out of love.
- 41:57And, you know, like the things I would never have thought when I
- 42:05first met you, whatever it's been, you know, 3-4 years ago, I
- 42:09never would have thought that that interaction that night
- 42:14would be the start of things now, because it kind of a rough
- 42:18interaction, if I recall correctly.
- 42:20I mean, we were both kind of twisted, you know what I mean?
- 42:23We're both feeling our things and, and stuff.
- 42:24And we're both kind of, you know, maybe going too hard in
- 42:28the pain in some form or fashion.
- 42:29And but like man, you know, interactions like that can can
- 42:34be. That can end anything.
- 42:37Further and in many ways, but it didn't you know like I wouldn't
- 42:41say like we we kind of stayed in touch.
- 42:43We didn't really like Yeah, yeah, it, it.
- 42:46Wasn't a fallout and it it's I mean it's one of those like I
- 42:49know I was, I was a little out there was flowing pretty.
- 42:55Heavy. But it's one of those, you know,
- 42:58I sat there and like, even thinking about it and thinking
- 43:00back to it, I can, I can remember to be like, and it, it,
- 43:04it was a tough love scenario, but it's one of those that it,
- 43:07it course corrected a whole bunch and it, it forced, it
- 43:11forced a part of me that I was like, that makes, I'm, I'm tired
- 43:18of, you know, being like, hey, you know, what's up, brother?
- 43:20And we're all family and we're not.
- 43:24And and that's that, that was one of those, Yeah, it, it was a
- 43:27great check. And it's one of those like it
- 43:31depended wherever everything would have ended up, that lesson
- 43:37would still be with me regardless if we even talked
- 43:41another time or, you know, like something like this where webs
- 43:48are weaved and lines are crossed and we're, you know, we're woven
- 43:52into each other's fabrics. Either way, that right there was
- 43:57one of those. You know what?
- 44:00Holy shit. He might have been an asshole
- 44:02when he said it, but he's you're spot on with it.
- 44:07Like how you know, if I'm sitting there and I'm, if I'm
- 44:10calling you brother, it's it's a hey, you're liable.
- 44:13I trust you. I, you know, I could drop my
- 44:15kids off with you. Yeah, which is?
- 44:18Yeah. I know they're safe, no harm is
- 44:20going to happen, you know, granted, they're going to raid
- 44:23your pantry, but but it's one of those I.
- 44:31That that check. Was well needed.
- 44:35Slash deserved right in in. In my own personal opinion that
- 44:41is. I'm coming from the one that got
- 44:42checked. So it's one of those IIA 100%
- 44:45like, like I said, if I had to never talk to you another day of
- 44:48my life, it would have been OK. But he gave some damn good.
- 44:54Advice, regardless of what was said.
- 45:00Right, yeah, 'cause I do like. I think about.
- 45:04I think the reason probably why I was so.
- 45:08Heavy with the web I delivered. It to you that night is because
- 45:15'cause correct? Me if I'm wrong 'cause like.
- 45:17You. You knew of me through my.
- 45:19I knew of you through your. Content.
- 45:22And then I remember what I said, which was asinine looking back
- 45:26on it. I told you because it was right.
- 45:29It was your father's passing. It's either the first year
- 45:32anniversary or like something close to it, or it was like
- 45:36right after his passing. And I was like, you know, I'm
- 45:39born with you, brother. And you were like, well, no,
- 45:43First off, yeah, you. Know.
- 45:47And I think that. Like one one of the reasons
- 45:49probably that I think looking back on it now is is why why I
- 45:53didn't just shrug it off and go, hey, man, we're not brothers.
- 45:56But I get it while you're saying it right?
- 45:57And why, why was I so vehement about my delivery?
- 46:03You know what I mean? I think honestly is because I
- 46:09maybe. Not, maybe not.
- 46:11Consciously knew anything, but I think, I think deep in my
- 46:14subconscious, I think it was like, you've got to get real
- 46:18with this one because he's a good one.
- 46:20You know what I mean? Like, you got to just make it
- 46:23known that, hey, whether he takes it or not, whether he
- 46:27accepts or not, like you've got to just don't pull any punches
- 46:30with this. Yeah, I I mean I could.
- 46:35Understand that with anybody else bro, like I haven't.
- 46:38I, you know, could be a few others now, but like in terms of
- 46:41just meeting somebody that's like, oh, I know you from your
- 46:43content and I think this or that.
- 46:45And then then bro, me like that. I mean, I've never just, I've
- 46:47been like, listen, motherfucker, you know, he's like, here's why.
- 46:51Yeah, yeah, no, yeah. And but it, it's one of those,
- 46:55yeah, I mean, that maybe, you know, maybe.
- 46:59And, and it's not like, you know, like you said, we didn't,
- 47:02we didn't sit there and message back and forth.
- 47:04I still listen to your podcast and all that.
- 47:06And I was, you know, very supportive.
- 47:08And then, you know, getting to know you.
- 47:10OK. Hey, I've got a game night
- 47:12coming. I'd like you to come up, come to
- 47:14my hall, let's hang out. You know, it was just, you know,
- 47:19gradual. Thing, you know, Yeah.
- 47:21And it's it's one of. Those like we're building and
- 47:24it's a constant building, a constant learning.
- 47:27That for me is one of those, if you're going to be a any, I
- 47:31think if you're going to be any good kind of heathen, you got to
- 47:35constantly learn always. Stay in that space.
- 47:39Of always willing. To learn.
- 47:42You know, because there's lessons to be taught from
- 47:46everywhere and by, by all, it's, you know, the, the, the, the
- 47:49day. And you know, I'll say this on
- 47:52the platform, but I'll say this with you here since, you know,
- 47:54we're talking now and you hear it to me like straight up from
- 47:57the horse's mouth, right? Like if I ever get to the point
- 48:00that I'm not receptive to wisdom, to learning to a lesson,
- 48:07and you get a sense where he's like, he's, he just thinks he's
- 48:09the hottest shit. You have my permission to check
- 48:14me right there, in whatever way possible.
- 48:16Knock me on my ass. I'll show up to your house.
- 48:19I'll. Show up to your house.
- 48:20I mean, I've got your address. It's saved.
- 48:22It's one of those be like, hey, by the way, can I say?
- 48:25I need to talk to you. Outside.
- 48:26Yeah, let's go for a walk in. The river, yeah, or whatever
- 48:30you. Know let's go for a drive.
- 48:32You know. No, no, we're going.
- 48:33To stones. River, that's where we'll head.
- 48:37Wasn't that that Family Guy episode where he's like, he
- 48:39shows up to do towels with a shotgun?
- 48:41I just want to talk to him. I just want to talk.
- 48:43I just going to kill him. I just want to talk to him.
- 48:47I won't. Kill you.
- 48:48But I'll I'll probably make you make you wish for a little bit
- 48:51of something. Yeah, but it's.
- 48:55Also one of those. I'd hope that in the same light
- 48:59I, if I ever was to that point of going, you know, I, I know
- 49:03it, I know it, I know it. You've got.
- 49:05My address. Free and free and rain.
- 49:08I'll send you the pin to my front door.
- 49:10Slap me, you know. What are you doing?
- 49:14Come on, you know, man, I've. I've done that to.
- 49:17People not, not literally like this, but I've had like, if you
- 49:20have you ever had conversations with people when maybe they come
- 49:24to you and in a sort of roundabout way they're asking
- 49:27for advice and they're not doing it in the first person sense.
- 49:31Like they're not coming to you and saying, hey, man, I'm
- 49:33dealing with such and such, What what should I do?
- 49:37And then they give you a scenario.
- 49:39Instead, what they do is they go, well, what does one do if
- 49:43like they're putting they're they're they're creating this
- 49:45bank. Yeah.
- 49:46Or Brad. Or or Chad or Robert has this
- 49:51problem going on and he come to me with it.
- 49:53Yeah. No.
- 49:55I. And then when you do.
- 49:58Like when they say like OK, so. What does?
- 49:59One do and then you go, all right, well, here's here's my
- 50:02answer to that. And you give the answer that
- 50:06best fit, you know, you give the best advice that you can.
- 50:08Basically it's experience or whatever.
- 50:11And then the next thing that that person says is yeah, but
- 50:16and then everything. Else you say.
- 50:18Is, yeah, but yeah, but at, at at eventually, at some point
- 50:21I'll be like, then I got nothing else to talk to you about, man.
- 50:24I'm, I'm, I'm Yeah. Have you ever have you ever gone
- 50:27through? I've I Yes.
- 50:30Yes, it's one of those where you'll sit there and you're
- 50:32constantly, you know, Hey, my buddy Brandon's.
- 50:37Got this going. On and you know, he really needs
- 50:40to do this, but you know he just can't seem to and it's like, are
- 50:45you Brandon? Because you're describing the
- 50:48scenario that I know you're currently going through, but you
- 50:51don't want to admit and it's one of those like the stubbornness
- 50:55that hard headedness. I've and I do not like to ask
- 50:58for help, but it's one of those for me you.
- 51:02Know hey. I've got it.
- 51:03I've got a problem when it comes to the asking for help and I
- 51:06would be the guy. Hey, you know buddy.
- 51:10'S got this going and I'd be. Like, hey, my buddy's got this
- 51:12going on and then like throw a couple like little
- 51:17embellishments to throw it off of whatever I was doing at the
- 51:21time. And so it doesn't seem like, Oh
- 51:25well, John wouldn't do this. He's he's definitely not doing
- 51:29that. But it's like I'd throw that
- 51:31stuff into and I've been the yeah, but guy and I've been the
- 51:36been the one on the receiving end of it where I'm like, I see
- 51:39through your bullshit. You're not hearing the answer
- 51:42that you want, so you're going to do the.
- 51:44Yeah, but it's one of those it's almost like they've got.
- 51:50It's almost like they've got the the answers and they're just
- 51:53wanting you to say. Yes, they want to hear you say
- 51:57the answer that they have, but there that answer.
- 52:00If it's like, hey, you know, I've got a problem buying
- 52:03lottery tickets and all of my extra money goes to lottery
- 52:07tickets. I have no money for, you know,
- 52:10gas this week because I spent it all on scratch offs or whatever.
- 52:14If that's a scenario where it's like, hey, why don't you instead
- 52:19of that $20, you're going to go burn and win nothing or chance
- 52:24it on, throw that 20 bucks in your gas tank.
- 52:28Yeah, but I could win $100,000. Yeah, but you could also lose
- 52:33the entire 20 bucks and now you're still without gas.
- 52:37Yeah, well, that's not the answer I'm looking for.
- 52:41And what if you know, what if the ticket that I get is no, the
- 52:45the that time of me being the. Yeah, but like reciprocating.
- 52:51OK, well, we let's game plant this.
- 52:52If you put $10 and you could still get $10 in this lottery or
- 52:57whatever, just fake scenario and you know you still have some gas
- 53:02for the week. It might tie you over Tuesday,
- 53:04Wednesday, but you could get back and forth to work to make
- 53:07more money to fund your Lotto. But you know, while I spent 15
- 53:13and only put five in I need now I need an extra 5 to 10 for gas.
- 53:18Can you help? And I've been on the receiving
- 53:20end of or the the giving end of. Can you help after that?
- 53:24And it's. Yeah.
- 53:27You can't keep pouring. Into a cup that won't fill, I
- 53:32know. And being yeah in that.
- 53:37Position. People that you care about too,
- 53:39you know what I mean? Like there's 100%.
- 53:42Like, you know, I don't think you're.
- 53:43Necessarily a a lost cause or a bad person inherently, I just
- 53:47think you you, you're you're just a.
- 53:50Little fucked up, you know. What I mean, you're just yeah,
- 53:53yeah, yeah. Trying to help you.
- 53:54I'm trying to unfuck. You over here right and and
- 53:56you're actually I'm not offering anything that you're not asking
- 54:00of me first so at the point of being presented with hey, what
- 54:06would you do if or how you know how would you handle this or how
- 54:08would you handle that well my. Advice is.
- 54:13What it is, and you're free to do with it whatever you want,
- 54:19but if all you're. Ever going to do is.
- 54:20Just retort back with a what if? Yeah, but this or that.
- 54:24I mean, why you even but wasting my time and your time.
- 54:26If you already have it figured out, why are you coming to me?
- 54:29Yeah. It's like, obviously.
- 54:31Something's going. On and you're wanting a instant
- 54:34gratification or justification for you being OK with your
- 54:38problem and it's one of those if you have a problem and you know
- 54:42you got a problem I I argue with insurance for a living one of my
- 54:48favorite things to do is call people on their bullshit so I.
- 54:53Quite literally get. Paid to do that and it's one of
- 54:56those like you guys hiring no. I was.
- 55:01Kidding, actually, might be, might be, but it's one of those,
- 55:07one of those getting to sit there and.
- 55:11Call people out on it and. It's OK, so that really didn't
- 55:15happen. I just wanted to see well, now
- 55:19you're asking me to in in my line of work, commit insurance
- 55:22fraud. I think I'm too pretty for
- 55:23prison. I'm not going to lie to lie to
- 55:27an insurance company and get a charge.
- 55:29So to get this this for free or that for free, that's, you know,
- 55:34it's one of those the integrity of it, the and and then get into
- 55:39watching people read and body language tells so much.
- 55:44They're wanting that gratification.
- 55:46They're wanting that part of them to go.
- 55:50He agrees. With it.
- 55:52And it's one of those I do the vague yeah, maybes I can see,
- 55:56you know, I can try that route, but I doubt it kind of things.
- 56:02And it's it's one of those you got to.
- 56:08I. Think you need to call it out
- 56:10personally, you know, right up front.
- 56:12Don't and it it's it sounds like you're along the same lines.
- 56:17Maybe it's just me getting a little older and wiser, but it's
- 56:21I don't have time for the you know, the bullshit that yeah,
- 56:24but the well, I I could this is the next Tuesday problem.
- 56:29It's not a the the joke I used to have is like, especially I
- 56:33used to drink really heavily. This is a future John problem.
- 56:38I don't. Give a.
- 56:39Flying fuck about future John. John right now is having a
- 56:43blast. He can deal with whatever's.
- 56:46So it's one of those that mindset is gone.
- 56:51Future John is now, and that's kind of the way I've been
- 56:58presenting with everything going on in my life.
- 57:01I don't want I don't want to be the one where everyone was like,
- 57:06well, he just he rolled over. He let people, you know, kind of
- 57:12walk on them not be he never stood up for the things he truly
- 57:16believed in or feel, you know, feel strongly or passionately
- 57:20about. It's one of those if I'm a say
- 57:23something on my mind and I like the the joke of, you know, I
- 57:28think T Rex's were Dragons. It's a hill I'm dying on. 100%
- 57:33you can't prove me wrong. Good luck.
- 57:36Please argue in the comments. I will argue back, but.
- 57:42I think you. Know on on something even as
- 57:44silly as that. For me it's a fun argument to
- 57:47get to have because there are depiction of Dragons.
- 57:51You know, the T Rex, the way the wing structure would work.
- 57:55Yeah, they weren't. They weren't.
- 57:56They weren't. Shorthands.
- 57:57They were literally like the, the, the, the, the bone
- 58:00structure of wings, you know? And you know what doesn't like?
- 58:03Preserve in dirt is cartilage and the massive wingspan would
- 58:07have to be something of a hollow bone and or cartilage.
- 58:10Please let there be an argument. I want it so bad.
- 58:13I'm a will it? I mean, we learned about this
- 58:17back in the. 90s when Jurassic Park came out that dinosaurs
- 58:20were more resembling birds nowadays than lizards and, and
- 58:23you know what I mean? Like so.
- 58:24Because yeah, the chicken is the closest.
- 58:26Descendant to AT Rex, which you know.
- 58:28If that's the case, I can only imagine how good T Rex tasted,
- 58:33right? Can you imagine a rotisserie?
- 58:35Rex Oh my gosh, I do. Hate to cut it short.
- 58:40Bubba, I have to get my daughter from gymnastics.
- 58:43Go for it, man. But it's one of those.
- 58:45The next one, I'm going to try to try my best, hop in and we'll
- 58:50ramble on for a hot minute. Yeah man, I'll just hang out.
- 58:54Definitely. Like I said, these these are
- 58:56monthly on, on, you know, every Monday, every Monday, the last
- 59:00Monday of the month. I think it is just, it's on the
- 59:02calendar. I think everybody that's there's
- 59:04got it. So yeah, I mean, if you can, you
- 59:06can. If you can't, no worries.
- 59:08I'll still have a show regardless and we'll just rock
- 59:10on with it. But thank you for popping in,
- 59:11man. I appreciate the dialogue, man.
- 59:13Had a good time. Man, I love you.
- 59:16Man, I hope you have a great night and I'll talk to you soon.
- 59:18Love you too, John. Take care.
- 59:20I'll see you. All right.
- 59:21Bye. Let's see here.
- 59:28Yeah, you can just close your. Thing out there John you should
- 59:30be there we go all right cool. So yeah, Michael just saw you
- 59:34commented there about a few minutes ago said surprised you
- 59:39made it Well, it's great that you did like I said we're just
- 59:42streaming live now to the Chieftain and above tier on
- 59:44Patreon. You saw John Deessen there for a
- 59:48little while, good brother of mine, good friend of mine,
- 59:51talking about just the the weight of oaths.
- 59:55First of all, this this kind of the topic of the podcast, but we
- 59:59got into some other things too. And that's what I love about
- 1:00:01having people on the show. And like this is this is an
- 1:00:07opportunity for everybody that pledges their support at the
- 1:00:10Chieftain tear and above. You can come and go.
- 1:00:13You get it. You get access to appear with me
- 1:00:15on screen and and, and talk for a bit, you know, so definitely
- 1:00:21take advantage of it if you ever feel like it.
- 1:00:23If not, you just want to sit back and kind of chill and.
- 1:00:27Type your comments out and I'll read them when I can, and then
- 1:00:30by all means do that too. But some of the things that John
- 1:00:34and I were talking about, you know, even though they weren't,
- 1:00:36even though we kind of went off into the weeds in a good way, it
- 1:00:40really does kind of tie back into kind of the root.
- 1:00:48Of the of the show, right? Oaths, obligation, Reliability,
- 1:00:54talking about things between people, you know, like the last
- 1:00:56situation or the last kind of circumstance or scenario that he
- 1:00:59and I were talking about where, you know, somebody goes to you
- 1:01:02or comes to you and asks for advice.
- 1:01:04Whether it's a direct question of what would you do?
- 1:01:06Because I'm having an issue with us and us.
- 1:01:09Or if they're creating a sort of situation that's theirs, but
- 1:01:13they're not assigning it to themselves.
- 1:01:15And they're giving this, you know what, what, what does one
- 1:01:17do if blah, blah, blah, and you go, well, this was what one
- 1:01:21should do if this is going on, right?
- 1:01:23You give you the best advice that you can, and then you're
- 1:01:25met with this retort, you know? Well, yeah, but and yeah.
- 1:01:29And then it's going, it goes back to me, like if if you have
- 1:01:33any sense of honor between people like that, you're going
- 1:01:38to respect someone's time. And I'm not going to present a
- 1:01:41situation to somebody. First of all, I'm not going to
- 1:01:43present a situation that is my situation and try to pretend
- 1:01:47that it's somebody else's or, or hide behind anonymity.
- 1:01:51If I trust you enough to go to you with a, with a question or
- 1:01:55with a problem that I'm facing that I'm needing help with, I'm
- 1:01:56going to respect your time and, and give you the truth and be
- 1:02:03transparent in that way. And then I'm going to, I'm going
- 1:02:08to listen to what you have to say, whether I like it or not.
- 1:02:13I'm going to. I'm not going to.
- 1:02:15Go with a Yeah, but I might have questions, you know, what do you
- 1:02:19mean by this or what happens when that right.
- 1:02:21I might, I might not truly know and I might be trying to learn
- 1:02:25and those questions might come across.
- 1:02:26Now I'm not going to hear we have to say and then give a
- 1:02:28yeah, but as like an excuse or a justification as to why it can't
- 1:02:32be the way you're describing or why it can't be why your answer
- 1:02:37doesn't apply or, or any sort of thing like that.
- 1:02:39And when it comes to the to the oath, you know, how can you be
- 1:02:44reliable? How can, how can you ever expect
- 1:02:49to feel that closeness, that connection, even that kinship
- 1:02:54maybe between someone, if all you're ever doing is giving
- 1:02:58justifications back? It's it's at some point,
- 1:03:02eventually I'm, you know. You're going to, you're going to
- 1:03:08ask those questions. And you're going to present
- 1:03:10those situations and the person's going to become wise
- 1:03:12enough to go. I don't know man, I guess you
- 1:03:15got. To figure it out or, or you know
- 1:03:16what I mean, they're not going to invest anything into it
- 1:03:18because nothing is being returned back.
- 1:03:21Nothing is like, you know, they're not seeing the results
- 1:03:24of their advice sinking into good soil.
- 1:03:27You know their advice is falling on deaf ears.
- 1:03:32The action isn't happening. It's just you're hearing the
- 1:03:35same old complaints, the same old song and dance.
- 1:03:39Repeat after repeat after repeat.
- 1:03:43And your patience wears thin. Your patience.
- 1:03:44Wears out and you just go, I don't have the spoons for this
- 1:03:46anymore. I don't have the patience to
- 1:03:48deal with somebody who's going to keep coming to me asking
- 1:03:52about things and then not taking what I have to say to heart.
- 1:03:56They're not taking what I have. You know, any advice that I have
- 1:03:58to say to heart, they they'd rather give me reasons or
- 1:04:02justifications as to why this can't work or it won't work or
- 1:04:05there's this other factor you haven't considered.
- 1:04:07Whatever right reasons and excuses and it doesn't secure
- 1:04:13any potential for establishing any sort of bonding identity
- 1:04:20with them. No.
- 1:04:22Whether it's a spoken oath or whether it's just this unspoken
- 1:04:25understanding of obligation, you know, and that's the other thing
- 1:04:31that you know, oath it means. Obligation it.
- 1:04:34Means Frith. You know it's.
- 1:04:43It's not just casual speech. You know, you look at the
- 1:04:46sources when, when, when oaths were sworn on the bore.
- 1:04:50I was talking earlier about with John.
- 1:04:53You know, some of the sources are one of the sources that talk
- 1:04:55about, you know, men swearing oaths on a sacred bore.
- 1:04:58I mean, these weren't just done in private between people.
- 1:05:01These this was done publicly and it became something that was
- 1:05:06binding to not just them, but to everybody, you know, and it's
- 1:05:14also worth that, you know, take a look at the Beowulf saga,
- 1:05:18which is an old English poem and you know, understand like the
- 1:05:22exchange that. I can't never remember the
- 1:05:29King's. Name.
- 1:05:33So. But but the stumble that takes
- 1:05:36place when when Beowulf and his men come and you know, he boasts
- 1:05:41and he he makes this great oath to to kill Grendel and.
- 1:05:46It's challenged. It's it's.
- 1:05:48And and it's expected that you're going to do it.
- 1:05:51You're just going to come in here and talk a big game and
- 1:05:54then not deliver on it. And so if you're going to do
- 1:05:57that, you have to have something in place to ensure that Your
- 1:06:01Honor is. Protected or you know?
- 1:06:07What happens if you don't kill Grendel?
- 1:06:09You know what happens if the monster gets you first?
- 1:06:13You don't, and now your oath is is unfulfilled.
- 1:06:19What happens to Your honor? What happens to your?
- 1:06:20Reputation What happens to the reliability that you.
- 1:06:26Established when you came here and.
- 1:06:28Said this is what you're going to do now.
- 1:06:29You're unreliable now you're not credible.
- 1:06:32Your your social credit score just tanked so but yeah, and
- 1:06:42there's other places to cross the source.
- 1:06:44Then you look at the of them all and you see repeated.
- 1:06:49Warnings to speak. Carefully, you know, don't over
- 1:06:52promise. Make sure you follow what you're
- 1:06:57going to say. Follow through with what you're
- 1:06:59going to say. There's a there was a, a phrase
- 1:07:04I I used to like here and I don't remember who originated
- 1:07:08it, but it's, you know, under promise and over deliver.
- 1:07:11It's better to. Make a make a statement.
- 1:07:17Or or commit to something that is kind of less and then over
- 1:07:25deliver on the result than to make these great big claims and
- 1:07:29then under deliver on that, you know so.
- 1:07:36Like we see. Many times throughout in the
- 1:07:38Hova mall, especially in the Hova Mall gets referenced so
- 1:07:41many times in Heathenry as as as as kind of the.
- 1:07:48Not the most important piece of. Literature, but like for
- 1:07:52heathens. To know how to be.
- 1:07:53Good, good heathens, right? Listen to the Hov Mall, Fall
- 1:07:56Hova Mall, like it's your Bible almost kind of a thing.
- 1:07:58And even though that's not what it is and never was supposed to
- 1:08:01be that way, you do see a lot of good practical wisdom.
- 1:08:04And one of those good practical pieces of wisdom throughout the
- 1:08:08hall of them all is to speak wisely.
- 1:08:09Not just, you know, talk a big game and make a fool of.
- 1:08:14Yourself it's. Choose your words carefully.
- 1:08:17Choose your words wisely. Know when to speak.
- 1:08:21Know when to listen because you know once those words leave your
- 1:08:25mouth you you got to hold up to that you know you're tied to
- 1:08:30that now and other people are expecting results too,
- 1:08:33especially with with regards to oaths because oaths are binding
- 1:08:37you're not just binding yourself to yourself and making a promise
- 1:08:40for yourself. You're making a promise that
- 1:08:42effects or could impact a wider audience and A and a broader
- 1:08:49audience, you know, and another key thing I think to.
- 1:08:55To remember is with. Sources to talk about people and
- 1:08:59their oaths and and the severity of what it means to to break an
- 1:09:03oath. And you know that that
- 1:09:05effectively put you into the status of an outlaw and you now
- 1:09:07you're susceptible and and you know at the whim of of anybody
- 1:09:13and anything that can get to you no protection you're on your
- 1:09:16own. We also see in the myth or myths
- 1:09:21of of the gods entering into. Situations where oaths.
- 1:09:28Get. Get get broken and and the.
- 1:09:32Result of that, you know, is anything.
- 1:09:34Probably the most infamous one or the most famous one is Fenrir
- 1:09:38and Tear. You know that.
- 1:09:40Story of you. Know the gods binding Fenrir to
- 1:09:48you know 'cause they see him becoming this force of their
- 1:09:52destruction and they want to prevent that and all of the
- 1:09:56things that the gods attempt to use to bind him, he can't be
- 1:10:00bound and then when it comes to a point of them having this
- 1:10:05magical fetter crafted of all these things, all these various
- 1:10:10things that you know quote. UN quote do not.
- 1:10:13Exist. Fenrir sees what's going on, and
- 1:10:18he. Demands a guarantee.
- 1:10:21And then of course. As you know, tear places his
- 1:10:23hand in the mouth of the wolf as they're binding him and when
- 1:10:26Fenrir realizes that he has been betrayed, he he he takes that
- 1:10:35that guarantee, you know, he he bites tears hand off.
- 1:10:40And so even the gods kind of pay that price, you know, in the
- 1:10:45stories and, and they that treachery, you know, that that
- 1:10:52betrayal is not unanswered and it's not unrewarded.
- 1:10:57It's not unpunished, if you will.
- 1:11:02So, you know, it's definitely seen throughout the lore,
- 1:11:09throughout the sagas, throughout various sources, why oaths
- 1:11:15matter so much. You know.
- 1:11:22You also got to think back in the day when when they were.
- 1:11:27Such a critical thing, you know there.
- 1:11:28Was really no strong, centralized enforcement of
- 1:11:32breaking your oath, right? It was society.
- 1:11:33It was your word, was your credibility.
- 1:11:35And if your word meant nothing, neither did you.
- 1:11:41You know, if you didn't, if you couldn't uphold what you said,
- 1:11:44then you were worthless. Worth was established by deeds
- 1:11:48and deeds, you know, words are the seeds of deeds.
- 1:11:52You know, you got to say it before you spray it kind of
- 1:11:54thing. Say.
- 1:11:56It don't spray it. But anyway, when you say is the
- 1:12:00seed that gets planted of the deed that you're going to do and
- 1:12:03then if you're not doing it, your credibility goes down,
- 1:12:05you're not, you're not worth anything.
- 1:12:09So with the oath. In that society did it created a
- 1:12:15societal order, create social order.
- 1:12:17It created alliances, treaties, marriages, leadership, loyalty,
- 1:12:24to to, to, to armies and things. You know what I mean?
- 1:12:28Like it was. It was so powerful, and it was.
- 1:12:32So influential that without it nothing would would be held
- 1:12:36together so. It literally shaped an.
- 1:12:40Identity. The oath.
- 1:12:41Did you know? And it's not like that now.
- 1:12:45It's we don't live in those times and like.
- 1:12:50John pointed out earlier you. Know we all have obligations
- 1:12:53that we are bound to, whether it's marriages, whether it's,
- 1:12:58you know, parenthood, whether it's other social and
- 1:13:03professional obligations, right? Things that we have, that we're
- 1:13:06responsible for, that we need to uphold and maintained.
- 1:13:12Getting. I don't want to say.
- 1:13:14Like roped into. It as if you're, you know.
- 1:13:20Enticed into doing it or or. Whatever, but you know, getting
- 1:13:23brought into this concept. Or this idea?
- 1:13:27Of swearing oaths between, for all intents and purposes,
- 1:13:31strangers. You know, people who haven't
- 1:13:34proven themselves to one another.
- 1:13:37That's dangerous business. And it's no wonder why so many
- 1:13:44groups, so many kindred, so many tribes, whatever name you want
- 1:13:47to put to them, why so many collectives seem to fall through
- 1:13:50and they seem to fail. There's, there's, there's no
- 1:13:52understanding of reality. It's, you know, reliving this
- 1:13:56now, you know, I again, I said before this, I don't want to
- 1:14:01negate, and I know John said this to you and negate the
- 1:14:04importance and, and how a kindred or how a tribe or how a
- 1:14:07collective operates with the oath.
- 1:14:10If that's part of the thing and that's part of how your group
- 1:14:13operates and that's how you make it work fine.
- 1:14:18You know, this isn't to discourage or negate the, the
- 1:14:24benefit of, of what it is and how you've been able to work it
- 1:14:26into your, your dynamics. It's just a call to attention
- 1:14:31that understand what it meant at the time and and how that
- 1:14:36translates into modern context. OK.
- 1:14:43Like with John and I earlier before.
- 1:14:44Like neither one of us have an oath sworn between us.
- 1:14:48We have. Years of experiences.
- 1:14:50That it would have been shared. That have brought us closer
- 1:14:52together as individuals into a more kinship model where we are
- 1:14:58assigning kinship titles to one another and we see each other as
- 1:15:01more than just good friends. We see each other as kinsmen.
- 1:15:06That in itself creates a social bond, A.
- 1:15:10Binding sort of relationship that there does not need to be
- 1:15:13word spoken to solidify it. You know what I mean?
- 1:15:17It's I've done that. I've, I, I have, you know,
- 1:15:21entered an oath web on an oath ring with witnesses, you know,
- 1:15:26with other men and other brothers of mine.
- 1:15:28That's worked. It's nothing's been compromised.
- 1:15:34We've been there for one another.
- 1:15:36We have that understanding of reciprocity, right leaning on
- 1:15:40each other, supporting one another, checking each other as
- 1:15:43necessary. So it's a little bit of
- 1:15:47everything, you know what I mean?
- 1:15:48It's it's worked itself out in in both ways for me too, That
- 1:15:53the, the the. Spoken oath.
- 1:15:55Is done so with enough understanding, with the right
- 1:15:59understanding of its its weight and its importance and other
- 1:16:05other relationships have become just as strong, if not stronger
- 1:16:08without that sort of a thing. You know, I think the.
- 1:16:13Big problem nowadays that we see is that modern.
- 1:16:20Modern mentality. Most people, especially the
- 1:16:23younger generations nowadays, you know, this world is is words
- 1:16:28are cheap. People don't think about.
- 1:16:33What? They're doing anymore, you know.
- 1:16:34It's or what they're saying anymore so much as you know,
- 1:16:38people either over promise, you know, make last minute
- 1:16:44cancellations for no good reason.
- 1:16:46This whole you know, I'll, I'll, I'll see what I can do or I'll
- 1:16:49try, right. There's no commitment, there's
- 1:16:50no dedication. The same thing.
- 1:16:55I said before you know that. The casual uses of terms like I
- 1:16:58promise, I swear I got you right, that sort of thing.
- 1:17:01It's people like to speak in absolutes without acting as
- 1:17:07such. You know, they'll, they'll say
- 1:17:08these things and then acting in in ways that is more, well,
- 1:17:11what's convenient. You know, I think largely, I
- 1:17:22think largely there's a problem of, you know, people have
- 1:17:26separated speech from consequence.
- 1:17:32You can say anything you want. Especially online, you know, you
- 1:17:35can say anything you want. It's nothing's going to happen
- 1:17:38to you, you know? Was your account going to get
- 1:17:42banned? Oh big whoop.
- 1:17:44You know, like. The separate speech.
- 1:17:47From consequences is fundamentally one of the most
- 1:17:50unlike non heathen. Things in structure that they.
- 1:17:55I can think of. So I think it's important for us
- 1:18:04all to. Remember, right, Especially the
- 1:18:05newcomers to Heathenry. You know, oaths aren't about
- 1:18:09impressing others. Don't do it.
- 1:18:11Don't. Don't.
- 1:18:13Get sucked into it. Don't get roped into it because
- 1:18:16it looks cool and there's, you know, a lot of fancy words
- 1:18:18getting thrown around. Or there's a horn and there's a,
- 1:18:20there's a ring and there's a sword and there's a this or
- 1:18:23that. There's a that.
- 1:18:25You know, it's not about impressing people, it's about
- 1:18:27aligning your future self who you're.
- 1:18:32Going to be. With what you're saying, what
- 1:18:35you're doing now? Because what you say and what
- 1:18:39you do now is. Going to shape what shall become
- 1:18:42We are weavers, we are shapers, you know, we are all doing those
- 1:18:47things and in our own webs of weird and.
- 1:18:51Sometimes those webs those. Threads become interwoven with
- 1:18:55others and it's so. Critical.
- 1:18:58And it's so important. To understand the gravity and
- 1:19:00the and the sincerity and the severity and the weight of these
- 1:19:05things as we talked about it. OK, you know oaths aren't.
- 1:19:13About ourselves so much as yes, there's, there's this.
- 1:19:18Obligation now that we are upheld.
- 1:19:20To and and commitments and things, but it's not about
- 1:19:25being, you know, you don't make an oath to yourself, You make an
- 1:19:29oath to others. It's about creating as a sense
- 1:19:33of structure. It's about creating dependency
- 1:19:36or dependability. Rather, it's about.
- 1:19:43Making yourself a. Better version of yourself to be
- 1:19:47there for others in in a reliable way that others can be,
- 1:19:51you know, relying on. Oaths can strengthen our weird
- 1:19:57I. Mean it's, it's a because again,
- 1:19:58it's it's, it's intertwining. It's interweaving ours and
- 1:20:03theirs, theirs and ours. So if as much of an oath.
- 1:20:08If if an oath can as much strengthen our weird, imagine
- 1:20:12what breaking one can do. I can weaken it, it can destroy
- 1:20:21it, it can devastate those bonds.
- 1:20:28So yeah, I think that's, that just about covers that.
- 1:20:33I don't want to ramble on too much.
- 1:20:35We've gone for just a little bit over, yeah, almost an hour, hour
- 1:20:39and 20 minutes or so. Had a great, I wouldn't say
- 1:20:41surprise guest, but I, you know, I wasn't knowing or expecting
- 1:20:44John was going to be here, so he got to pop in and say hey for a
- 1:20:46bit, which is great. Added a great section of, of
- 1:20:51dialogue to the show. I always enjoy those those types
- 1:20:56of things. So yeah, I think that's it.
- 1:21:00And I appreciate everybody that did or that has pledged their
- 1:21:05support at the Chieftain tier or above.
- 1:21:07Like I said, excuse me. Michael Thacker chimed in on the
- 1:21:10chat earlier. But the special thanks to him
- 1:21:14and John Deason, Adam Cage, Michaela, Chris Martino, you
- 1:21:19know, you folks that have pledged at the Scald tier and
- 1:21:22above. Thank you so very much.
- 1:21:24So of course, if you're at those tiers and above, you're always
- 1:21:28going to be looped into the to the Chieftain tier.
- 1:21:30So for anybody that listens to the show and wants to come on
- 1:21:33the show 1 time, or even if you don't want to be a come a
- 1:21:36Chieftain tier patron, I want to come on the show.

- 1:22:32It's my nine month rune course. It's not about studying runes to
- 1:22:36know what the meanings of the runes are.
- 1:22:37It's about seeing them as living things, not just static symbols.
- 1:22:42Knowing how to read runes as they're casted and as they fall.
- 1:22:45This is my method. It's a proven method that I've
- 1:22:47been doing for nearly ten years and it's, I've been doing it
- 1:22:52hundreds of times, private, publicly, all sorts of ways so.
- 1:22:58Check it all out. There and.
- 1:23:02Sorry about missing most of it so I'm.
- 1:23:03Just reading Michael Thacker says so sorry about missing most
- 1:23:06of it. Been busy lately settling a few
- 1:23:12legal things. Hope to have more active
- 1:23:14catching live streams again. Absolutely, Michael, I hope it
- 1:23:17all goes well. And like I said before, thank
- 1:23:20you for at least popping in and staying.
- 1:23:21Hi, it's always great to, to hear your thoughts and you've,
- 1:23:25you've added a lot of really valuable things to the, to the
- 1:23:28shows over the, you know, over the years topics and things.
- 1:23:32So I appreciate that. But yeah.
- 1:23:35For everybody else. That catches this whenever.
- 1:23:37Thank you so much for your support.
- 1:23:39Until we talk to each other again, may the gods continue to
- 1:23:43notice you, and may your ancestors smile upon you.
- 1:23:48See you on the next one.
