- 0:44Speaker 1: Bill's off this week. He'll be back next week, and
- 0:47Speaker 1: I'll be off next week. I think it is the
- 0:51Speaker 1: longest I've gone without seeing that man in some time.
- 0:55Speaker 1: If you'd like to happy New Year to you. By
- 0:57Speaker 1: the way, if you would like to leave a question
- 1:01Speaker 1: for any of us tomorrow during ask Handle anything, well,
- 1:04Speaker 1: it will just do. Ask us anything, but we'd love
- 1:09Speaker 1: to hear from you. If you have any questions, just
- 1:11Speaker 1: go to the talk back line very easy. If on
- 1:14Speaker 1: your iHeartRadio app there's a red button, a little icon
- 1:18Speaker 1: of a mic on there and you can hit that
- 1:20Speaker 1: and you get thirty seconds to ask us a question
- 1:23Speaker 1: and we'll be we'll do our best. Well, we usually
- 1:26Speaker 1: answer what eight or nine of them kno, something like that,
- 1:29Speaker 1: so we'll see what we can do. I'm humored by
- 1:35Speaker 1: talkbacks that have no logic or reason to them. They
- 1:39Speaker 1: just don't like your politics. I hear them for handle
- 1:44Speaker 1: all the time. I'm like, listen if you want to say, hey,
- 1:47Speaker 1: here's some information you don't have, or but like it's
- 1:52Speaker 1: like yelling at somebody for going.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Oh my god, you like vanilla ice cream? Oh my god,
- 1:58Speaker 2: who's Vanilla Bros? All about chuck a lot.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Anyways, still humors. Saw a story and it comes at
- 2:09Speaker 1: a weird time. This story by Peggy Noonan in the
- 2:14Speaker 1: Wall Street Journal about gallantry, and we'll talk a little
- 2:18Speaker 1: bit about what gallantry is and why she says that
- 2:22Speaker 1: it needs to come back for twenty twenty six, and
- 2:25Speaker 1: I could not agree anymore. It just is, we have
- 2:32Speaker 1: really our moral compass and our desire to serve each
- 2:37Speaker 1: other has been out of whack for some time, but
- 2:42Speaker 1: it is it's gotten to the point where it is
- 2:44Speaker 1: really really bad. But this also comes at a time
- 2:49Speaker 1: where Heather Brooker and I just realized, you know, everybody's
- 2:54Speaker 1: on tape today, So it's kind of hard to be
- 2:58Speaker 1: have gallantry when we're kind of like.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Sacrificing. Yeah, right, where is everybody? What on earth?
- 3:08Speaker 1: Oh it's it's New Year's Day. You think Chanon's going
- 3:11Speaker 1: to come in when there's football on?
- 3:15Speaker 3: That's true. I asked her yesterday I was doing. She
- 3:17Speaker 3: said she was going to be relaxing at home and
- 3:19Speaker 3: some comfy clothes and.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Yeah, get some fat pants on and get some snacks,
- 3:24Speaker 1: watch television on a cold day. Doesn't sound magical. I don't, definitely,
- 3:31Speaker 1: but I wish for everyone to have that. So gallantry, Uh,
- 3:36Speaker 1: basically it's acting without expectation, you know, no reward, no credit,
- 3:43Speaker 1: standing up for week weaker people or causes that you
- 3:47Speaker 1: that can't repay you, and.
- 3:53Speaker 2: You know, having strength and not using it cruelly.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Confidence but not the ego kind, doing the right thing
- 4:01Speaker 1: and you know, saying it wasn't anything. It's like that's
- 4:05Speaker 1: the normal thing to do when you know it's like
- 4:12Speaker 1: I don't look for a reward from my wife because
- 4:16Speaker 1: I don't sleep around like look at me, you.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Know, sticking to our oathh who's a good guy?
- 4:25Speaker 1: You you do it because that's those are the promises
- 4:28Speaker 1: you put out there or those are the things that
- 4:30Speaker 1: you said. We've gotten to this place where even if
- 4:35Speaker 1: you have a right to do something doesn't mean you
- 4:40Speaker 1: should do it.
- 4:42Speaker 2: And I've said this before on the air.
- 4:43Speaker 1: You know, as somebody who is a person of faith,
- 4:47Speaker 1: by no means doesn't make you perfect in any way,
- 4:49Speaker 1: shape or form.
- 4:51Speaker 2: But also, just because it's legal.
- 4:53Speaker 1: To do in the United States doesn't mean that a
- 4:57Speaker 1: person of faith can do it. You go to Nevada,
- 4:59Speaker 1: it's legal to get a prostitute. But just because just
- 5:04Speaker 1: because you can do something doesn't mean you should. And
- 5:07Speaker 1: the reason why I point that out is because yes,
- 5:09Speaker 1: we have rights in America, and there are rights, individual
- 5:13Speaker 1: rights that we can utilize, but there's times when you
- 5:17Speaker 1: have to look at the hole and that that's more important,
- 5:21Speaker 1: and that just exercising your rights just because you can
- 5:26Speaker 1: is not a good thing. I see people doing stupid
- 5:29Speaker 1: ass things more than ever before, Like driving on the
- 5:33Speaker 1: side of the you know, when there's traffic on the freeway,
- 5:36Speaker 1: driving on the shoulder, and one guy will do it
- 5:42Speaker 1: and you go, okay, that's a wing nut, and then
- 5:44Speaker 1: another person does it and it gives permission that old
- 5:49Speaker 1: concept of And I've seen this firsthand when my wife
- 5:52Speaker 1: and I lived in an apartment when we first got married.
- 5:55Speaker 1: We lived in an apartment in Hollywood, and someone left
- 6:01Speaker 1: something out front, maybe they moved out of the apartment complex,
- 6:04Speaker 1: and I don't know, maybe it was a table or
- 6:06Speaker 1: a chair, or someone left a cup there or whatever
- 6:11Speaker 1: it was. And I'm like, just watch, and sure enough,
- 6:16Speaker 1: by trash day there was a couch out there. Now
- 6:22Speaker 1: like people just started piling garbage. It's what we do well,
- 6:26Speaker 1: just any anytime you loosen up anything, we will go
- 6:31Speaker 1: for the loosest point, that the weakest link, we will
- 6:34Speaker 1: go through. And so this this call to reclaim gallantry,
- 6:39Speaker 1: not not just courage, but the expression of courage, bravery, bravery,
- 6:45Speaker 1: but with humility, restraint, and moral style. Rejecting bragging or
- 6:52Speaker 1: winning loudly. I love that that saying you should lose
- 6:58Speaker 1: with your head up and win with your head down,
- 7:03Speaker 1: having the balance in life. If you do have the
- 7:07Speaker 1: chance to get a win, if you have these things,
- 7:11Speaker 1: don't shove it down people's throats. Don't you know there's
- 7:16Speaker 1: if people ask or want guidance or advice, give it freely.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Don't gate keep the concept of winning loudly and I've
- 7:26Speaker 1: said this before, is insecurity is loud. Confidence is quiet,
- 7:34Speaker 1: And so when people start to get loud about things,
- 7:37Speaker 1: that shows me a weakness.
- 7:40Speaker 2: It happens, happens to all of us. But when people
- 7:44Speaker 2: get you know.
- 7:49Speaker 1: This, better than you, higher than now, whatever you want
- 7:53Speaker 1: to call it, do things because they're right. Don't look
- 7:59Speaker 1: for expectation, not credit, not reward. Standing up for weaker
- 8:06Speaker 1: people I think is important. Unfortunately, I think we always
- 8:10Speaker 1: assume the weaker are right though. You know, we have
- 8:16Speaker 1: a thing about people that are oppressed in this country,
- 8:18Speaker 1: and then you have to go, well, yeah, criminals may
- 8:22Speaker 1: be oppressed in prison, but why and things like that,
- 8:26Speaker 1: So understanding more about if you're actually helping or if
- 8:32Speaker 1: you like people will often go look, I'm helping the poor,
- 8:34Speaker 1: and it's like, well are you.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Are you really doing?
- 8:38Speaker 1: Are you trying to get them? You help people out
- 8:40Speaker 1: of situations, not lifestyles. If there's a situation in which
- 8:45Speaker 1: you can reach out and say, hey, man, I know
- 8:47Speaker 1: you got kicked in the in the goodies because of
- 8:51Speaker 1: this happened or whatever it is, that's a situation. But
- 8:55Speaker 1: if somebody is living a certain way, they don't want
- 8:57Speaker 1: to work they don't want to do.
- 8:58Speaker 2: So you can't help anybody out of that. They're an alcoholic.
- 9:01Speaker 1: You have to Yeah, you can't just give them a
- 9:05Speaker 1: little something to get them out of it. So I
- 9:08Speaker 1: like this, Peggy Noonan. I like this article. We need
- 9:12Speaker 1: to return to gallantry. And this is preaching to myself too,
- 9:16Speaker 1: that core message. You can be decisive without being brutal.
- 9:20Speaker 1: You can win without humiliating others, you can lead without boasting,
- 9:25Speaker 1: and we could be better. January first, twenty twenty six,
- 9:29Speaker 1: We're here.
- 9:30Speaker 2: We did it. You. Uh, you're a.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Pretty positive guy, aren't you. Kono, Yeah, you are. You
- 9:38Speaker 1: love your family, you got kids.
- 9:40Speaker 2: I do.
- 9:41Speaker 3: All those things are true?
- 9:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, right?
- 9:43Speaker 1: Are you looking forward at twenty twenty six?
- 9:45Speaker 2: Brother?
- 9:45Speaker 4: I guess I don't know. It's I don't know all
- 9:49Speaker 4: the same other people like you. Just this is going
- 9:52Speaker 4: to be the start, like you should have started in October.
- 9:55Speaker 4: I don't think that moth matters, So it doesn't. I
- 9:57Speaker 4: don't care.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Every moment, every day is a new beginning all that.
- 10:00Speaker 1: But do you get hopeful of the new year?
- 10:02Speaker 2: Do you go? I'm gonna no, I guess I'm hopeful.
- 10:05Speaker 4: If I'm hopeful I'm hopeful in the day all that,
- 10:08Speaker 4: like the January one, doesn't be like I'm a beautiful
- 10:11Speaker 4: now I don't.
- 10:12Speaker 2: It's not.
- 10:12Speaker 5: That's not a me take, that's not a mean to. No,
- 10:19Speaker 5: that's that's uh, the year changed. Oh this is my
- 10:23Speaker 5: don't do that.
- 10:24Speaker 1: No, I'd get it's an arbitrary mark, a line in
- 10:26Speaker 1: the sand that we go, Okay, here's something. But whatever
- 10:28Speaker 1: gets you kicked off. I mean, you can't win a
- 10:31Speaker 1: race unless someone says, Okay, this is the starting line
- 10:34Speaker 1: and this is the finish line.
- 10:35Speaker 2: It's just what we do in life.
- 10:36Speaker 4: Yeah, I guess my starting line is just on my eyes.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Open the wake up. That's a good day. Well.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Vox put out like a breakdown of twenty six things
- 10:46Speaker 1: they think will happen in the year twenty twenty six,
- 10:48Speaker 1: and a lot of these have to do with politics,
- 10:49Speaker 1: but it looks at the economy and climate and tech
- 10:52Speaker 1: and health and all these things and culture. But breaking
- 10:56Speaker 1: down a lot of people try and guess as to
- 10:59Speaker 1: what's and go down with politics.
- 11:02Speaker 2: The problem is you can't out think Trump. You can't.
- 11:08Speaker 2: He's a wild card.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Not on a particular topic, but every day, like moment
- 11:15Speaker 1: to moment.
- 11:15Speaker 2: He's a wild card. And I know Handle.
- 11:18Speaker 1: This is the thing I've known Handled for thirty years,
- 11:21Speaker 1: and I tease him all the time that he has
- 11:23Speaker 1: gotten more hyperbolic. But Trump brings that out in people.
- 11:29Speaker 1: And although I'm not a fan of the guy as
- 11:31Speaker 1: a person, that doesn't mean everything he does is going
- 11:33Speaker 1: to be wrong.
- 11:33Speaker 2: It just doesn't.
- 11:35Speaker 1: And so I look at everything across the board individually
- 11:39Speaker 1: and I pick and choose.
- 11:40Speaker 2: That's what a brain is for.
- 11:43Speaker 1: You know, not everything is going that comes out of
- 11:46Speaker 1: this guy is going to be bad. I'm sorry. I
- 11:48Speaker 1: don't believe that in anybody. And like I said, if
- 11:51Speaker 1: the devil looks me in the eye and says two
- 11:53Speaker 1: plus two equals.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Four, they're still right.
- 11:58Speaker 1: So this kind of takes on a lot of it
- 12:00Speaker 1: that the democracy, US democracy is going to weaken. I
- 12:05Speaker 1: don't know what that means. I know I hear a
- 12:10Speaker 1: lot of people think, you know, we're losing our rights.
- 12:12Speaker 1: And I would say that if I were a woman
- 12:20Speaker 1: and I looked at you know, reproductive rights, I'd say,
- 12:27Speaker 1: I hope someone re looks at this because you know,
- 12:31Speaker 1: or looks at this from the point of view of
- 12:35Speaker 1: the woman.
- 12:37Speaker 2: If I were gay.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I would be annoyed at the very least to say, hey,
- 12:43Speaker 1: are they really re looking at whether gay marriage is
- 12:47Speaker 1: going to be legal. I don't think that's going to flip.
- 12:50Speaker 1: I don't think that's going to change. But other than
- 12:54Speaker 1: those things, do I think that we're losing our rights?
- 12:57Speaker 2: I don't.
- 12:59Speaker 1: I think we have checks balances in place, and they
- 13:01Speaker 1: continue to do what they're supposed to do. Right, not everything.
- 13:06Speaker 1: You know, the president's not even getting away with everything.
- 13:08Speaker 1: There are checks and balances. And as I've said before
- 13:11Speaker 1: and we'll say again, I'm a big we the people person.
- 13:15Speaker 1: There's more of us than them, and the more the
- 13:20Speaker 1: larger government we get, the worst things will be. Smaller
- 13:27Speaker 1: government makes sense. Strangely enough, is the left and right
- 13:32Speaker 1: both have these hypocritical stances on things. The left wants
- 13:38Speaker 1: bigger government to take care of more people. Yet if
- 13:41Speaker 1: it's not a liberal mind in there, then what are you.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Going to do?
- 13:50Speaker 1: So it's so the structure should be on a case
- 13:53Speaker 1: by case basis as to you know where things can
- 13:57Speaker 1: be because if if you can do it as a president,
- 14:00Speaker 1: when if you're okay with it when your person's in there,
- 14:03Speaker 1: then you got to be okay with it when your
- 14:05Speaker 1: person's not in there. Democrats taking back at least one
- 14:08Speaker 1: chamber of Congress. People are saying that that could be
- 14:12Speaker 1: a ninety five percent chance. Historically, yeah, that's probably gonna happen.
- 14:17Speaker 1: The midterm always punishes the president's party, whoever's in so
- 14:22Speaker 1: that's probably gonna take place. But again, we keep seeing
- 14:25Speaker 1: things that are that word that we love so much, unprecedented,
- 14:30Speaker 1: and it keeps popping up.
- 14:31Speaker 2: So how is that going to play out? I don't know.
- 14:34Speaker 1: At least one major education department function survives. They say
- 14:39Speaker 1: that Trump can't fully dissolve the department without Congress, so
- 14:43Speaker 1: maybe something will stay. But again, if we're looking around
- 14:47Speaker 1: saying if Trump likes this, then we can't, or if
- 14:51Speaker 1: the left likes this, we can't. If you get into
- 14:54Speaker 1: that mentality, man, that's a cult. That's not politics. Now
- 14:58Speaker 1: you've lost your mind and you just are doing whatever
- 15:03Speaker 1: or reacting to whomever's in office that you don't like,
- 15:07Speaker 1: because ultimately I would rather them go. Okay, We'll look
- 15:10Speaker 1: at this regardless of who's in office. Look at the
- 15:14Speaker 1: Department of Education. Is America bursting at the seams with
- 15:20Speaker 1: great education? No we have highly problem highly problematic education
- 15:27Speaker 1: in California.
- 15:29Speaker 2: Now, my kid goes to a public school and I
- 15:32Speaker 2: rather like it.
- 15:34Speaker 1: I think they do a nice job, and I think
- 15:37Speaker 1: that the principal and the teachers are attentive. But my
- 15:44Speaker 1: wife's very involved in that too. They're at the school
- 15:48Speaker 1: and being a participant. And I am too, just not
- 15:51Speaker 1: as much as she is. And that's a big part
- 15:54Speaker 1: of your kid's education, how much you're involved in it.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Supreme Court rules against Trump on tariffs. That's a belief
- 16:00Speaker 1: that is going to be a big thing throughout twenty
- 16:03Speaker 1: twenty six, so says Vox. Lower courts say that Trump
- 16:07Speaker 1: exceeded authority under emergency powers. Trump is absolutely, without a doubt,
- 16:13Speaker 1: testing what the powers of the presidency mean and where
- 16:18Speaker 1: they can go. But he's only in for four years,
- 16:21Speaker 1: no matter what anybody thinks, and he keeps goating people.
- 16:26Speaker 1: He really owns people like nobody's business. I don't know
- 16:30Speaker 1: who owns me like that. I don't know nobody lives
- 16:34Speaker 1: rent free in my head like that, not even the
- 16:38Speaker 1: President of the United States.
- 16:41Speaker 2: I've never known you. Kono you think you do? I gotcha?
- 16:45Speaker 1: Listen Cono on do you buddy.
- 16:50Speaker 2: It's really refreshing.
- 16:51Speaker 1: At at eight fifty eight is when you leave my
- 16:58Speaker 1: head eight fifty eight morning, I go, there's no I
- 17:02Speaker 1: don't know about that.
- 17:04Speaker 6: Okay, there's what messages memes that's one fourteen in the morning.
- 17:13Speaker 6: I love you, buddy, I love you buddy. You gotta
- 17:15Speaker 6: put a block. I miss you, buddy. But it is funny.
- 17:21Speaker 6: It's like that people are owned like does this make
- 17:23Speaker 6: you mad? I go, that takes takes a lot to
- 17:26Speaker 6: make me mad. I don't want anybody owning me like that.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Ever, Trump replaces at least one Supreme Court justice. They
- 17:34Speaker 1: say there's a seventy five percent chance of that, but
- 17:37Speaker 1: that's you know, people age out. That's that's the one
- 17:41Speaker 1: thing that I'll give anybody. Trump got a lot on
- 17:46Speaker 1: the Supreme Court and that's forever. But most things that
- 17:51Speaker 1: he does can be reversed by someone else. They are
- 17:55Speaker 1: saying that in the World Affairs that net Ya who
- 17:59Speaker 1: will no longer be Israel's Prime minister by the end
- 18:01Speaker 1: of twenty twenty six, so that there's going to be backlash.
- 18:08Speaker 1: You know, there's still uncertainty, political maneuvering, delays, all that stuff.
- 18:14Speaker 1: No Ukraine Russia ceasefire lasting thirty plus days by the
- 18:18Speaker 1: end of twenty twenty six, sixty percent say that that's
- 18:21Speaker 1: a a rough one.
- 18:22Speaker 2: I hope for that. I hope for that.
- 18:26Speaker 1: I mean that the bullying in the garbage that Ukraine
- 18:30Speaker 1: has suffered under Russia and Putin is just absolutely insane.
- 18:37Speaker 1: China does not invade or fully blockade Taiwan in twenty
- 18:40Speaker 1: twenty six. Seventy five percent says that more pressure showing
- 18:45Speaker 1: up in that, so it isn't really positive this look
- 18:48Speaker 1: by Vox for twenty twenty six. I tend to look
- 18:52Speaker 1: at every new year as an opportunity for us to
- 18:54Speaker 1: find ourselves in a better way.
- 18:56Speaker 2: We shall see, we shall see.
- 18:59Speaker 1: CEOs are saying there unplugging over the holidays. Some say,
- 19:04Speaker 1: is that really unplugging, But they are setting some boundaries,
- 19:07Speaker 1: and this is a big deal. I think, even though
- 19:11Speaker 1: it's been exploited, that one of the good things that
- 19:14Speaker 1: came out of COVID, at least in my point of view,
- 19:17Speaker 1: was that we took a second look at our lives
- 19:22Speaker 1: and the work life balance.
- 19:25Speaker 2: And I've always been like.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Work, work, work guy, never been very balanced at all.
- 19:33Speaker 2: Like work was me.
- 19:36Speaker 1: I was work, must work, and was always annoyed when
- 19:40Speaker 1: people didn't. I mean, I believe people deserve to take
- 19:44Speaker 1: time off, but it's like in this industry there it's
- 19:49Speaker 1: not always a whole lot of opportunity. So take it
- 19:53Speaker 1: where you can get it and show your dedication. And
- 19:58Speaker 1: I was basically right in this, starting as an intern
- 20:02Speaker 1: here at KFI in ninety four, but I was already
- 20:05Speaker 1: in radio before that. I've been in radio since I
- 20:07Speaker 1: was I don't know, eighteen nineteen something like that.
- 20:10Speaker 2: So over half my life.
- 20:12Speaker 1: And I've always taken pride about being here at KFI.
- 20:15Speaker 2: It's not.
- 20:17Speaker 1: It's the best of the best. It doesn't play by
- 20:19Speaker 1: the rules of others, and so I take that seriously.
- 20:24Speaker 1: And yeah, I overworked a lot of times. I was,
- 20:27Speaker 1: you know, married once before, and I take my you know,
- 20:35Speaker 1: my part of that in the failed marriage or the
- 20:39Speaker 1: marriage failing rather because you know, I worked a lot
- 20:43Speaker 1: and I've learned from that. But a lot of CEOs,
- 20:48Speaker 1: a lot of people don't do that. They just they
- 20:51Speaker 1: think that you're a men do this a lot too.
- 20:54Speaker 1: You're not a real man if you're not working all
- 20:56Speaker 1: the time and and doing all those things. And it's hard,
- 21:00Speaker 1: but CEOs admit that they're They rarely fully unplug and
- 21:07Speaker 1: now now's the time you got to start doing these things.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Otherwise you're no good to anybody. And I'm sorry. Companies
- 21:14Speaker 1: just don't care about you like they used to. There's
- 21:17Speaker 1: not even a gold watch at the end of it.
- 21:21Speaker 1: They used to celebrate anniversaries. I remember that they slowly
- 21:25Speaker 1: stopped doing it. You They'd celebrate your one year, your
- 21:29Speaker 1: five year, you're ten, you're fifteen, and you're twenty, something
- 21:33Speaker 1: like that. And that ended pretty pretty early on when
- 21:38Speaker 1: I was here, but it was like a big deal.
- 21:41Speaker 1: You've been with the company. Now you can be here
- 21:43Speaker 1: thirty years, and it's like grab your box by And
- 21:47Speaker 1: I don't think that's unique to this business. I think
- 21:50Speaker 1: it's everywhere. But so devoting yourself to a company is
- 21:55Speaker 1: kind of stupid. You devote yourself to yourself. Think you
- 22:00Speaker 1: better yourself to the best you can in whatever thing
- 22:03Speaker 1: you're doing in front of you. I love when I
- 22:06Speaker 1: see somebody who's good at what they do or puts
- 22:08Speaker 1: themselves into it. I don't care what they're doing, I
- 22:11Speaker 1: don't you know, whatever they're doing. If they're dedicated to it,
- 22:16Speaker 1: that always impresses, impresses me and will continue to and
- 22:19Speaker 1: I go, that person's gonna gonna grow.
- 22:22Speaker 2: They're just gonna grow. People see that.
- 22:26Speaker 1: It was Steve Martin who said, be so great that
- 22:29Speaker 1: they can't ignore you. And I don't think that's just
- 22:31Speaker 1: for entertainment. I think that's in life. So you have
- 22:34Speaker 1: to take care of yourself. On the flip side of that,
- 22:36Speaker 1: setting those boundaries, smalling thoughts, finding small ways to disconnect.
- 22:40Speaker 1: So this story talks about CEOs doing that, finding this
- 22:44Speaker 1: holiday season to be quieter, setting up these micro boundaries.
- 22:50Speaker 1: They call them, not full shutdowns, but balance. And you know,
- 22:56Speaker 1: I've known people who would just disappear, like come the weekend,
- 23:00Speaker 1: you couldn't get a hold of them. And I'm not
- 23:02Speaker 1: saying you have to do that, especially in certain industries,
- 23:07Speaker 1: but you know, the work meetings. I'm not a fan
- 23:11Speaker 1: of meetings. Brainstorming, yes, but a lot of meetings. The
- 23:15Speaker 1: old saying, when all is said and done, as much
- 23:17Speaker 1: as said little is done, just point me in the direction,
- 23:21Speaker 1: tell me what you need, and let me go do it.
- 23:24Speaker 1: The longer we talk about it, the more bored I get.
- 23:26Speaker 1: I don't want to do it. So they're saying, CEOs
- 23:29Speaker 1: are starting to look for outdoor adventures, unplugging that happens
- 23:34Speaker 1: in chunks, not completely, but a chunk here, chunk there,
- 23:37Speaker 1: and some of it. They find time to do things
- 23:41Speaker 1: like using legos, which I love. I think anytime you're
- 23:45Speaker 1: creating or building, it's a healthy way to go through
- 23:47Speaker 1: life and to focus and push yourself into problem solving,
- 23:52Speaker 1: I think is one of the best things. Nothing better
- 23:54Speaker 1: to me than problem solving. When I'm in my shop
- 23:59Speaker 1: at home and I'm building something, or I'm troubleshooting something.
- 24:04Speaker 2: I designed something and i'm.
- 24:08Speaker 1: Working it out in CAT or computer aided drafting where
- 24:11Speaker 1: I'm designing something in the digital realm, three D printing
- 24:16Speaker 1: it or C and C cutting or whatever it is,
- 24:19Speaker 1: and I get past that problem.
- 24:22Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, my poor wife. I come in there.
- 24:24Speaker 1: I'm like, I figured it out. But it's a great release,
- 24:29Speaker 1: a relief, and I think playing with legos and doing
- 24:31Speaker 1: these things that we're seeing CEOs finding is part of
- 24:35Speaker 1: that of that goal. Having a beginning, middle and end,
- 24:38Speaker 1: I think is one of the best ways to get
- 24:41Speaker 1: yourself focused. But finding this time, says the guy who's
- 24:46Speaker 1: working on New Year's day. But finding this holiday time
- 24:49Speaker 1: as a demarcation for you, I think is a great
- 24:52Speaker 1: way to do it, stepping away between Christmas and New Year's,
- 24:56Speaker 1: having that time, focusing on a book, walking, uh, non
- 25:01Speaker 1: work relationships. It's another thing I've broken away from a
- 25:05Speaker 1: lot of, you know, the phony work relationship garbage, and
- 25:09Speaker 1: focus on the people that have been there for me,
- 25:13Speaker 1: that I love and that I care about deeply. You know,
- 25:16Speaker 1: when there's firings or layoffs or things like that, you
- 25:18Speaker 1: start seeing as to who's who and what relationships were
- 25:22Speaker 1: built upon, just familiarity with the same location and all
- 25:26Speaker 1: of that. So being fully unplugged, finding a way to disconnect.
- 25:31Speaker 1: And I said this earlier in the week that when
- 25:35Speaker 1: I left my management for those of you position here
- 25:38Speaker 1: at KFI, for those of you didn't know, I was
- 25:40Speaker 1: the assistant program director for many years before that, I
- 25:43Speaker 1: was the director of marketing, the director of promotions, and
- 25:46Speaker 1: I've been in a lot of management positions here at
- 25:49Speaker 1: the station.
- 25:50Speaker 2: And I walked away from that.
- 25:51Speaker 1: I was just like, it's it's not conducive to the
- 25:55Speaker 1: life that I want anymore. Got a young boy, older father,
- 26:00Speaker 1: and I want to be there for my family. And
- 26:03Speaker 1: the first thing I did was turn off the ringer
- 26:06Speaker 1: on my phone. It has not been on. It's almost
- 26:12Speaker 1: never on. Now I have an Apple watch that you know, vibrates,
- 26:16Speaker 1: and I can glance at it if I've got it
- 26:18Speaker 1: on and go, okay, write a note.
- 26:20Speaker 2: I'll get back to that person.
- 26:22Speaker 1: But the whole, the whole thing about having to respond
- 26:25Speaker 1: right this moment or be anywhere. I make jokes about
- 26:29Speaker 1: it all the time, but the reality is, you know,
- 26:32Speaker 1: on my honeymoon in India, I got to call it
- 26:38Speaker 1: one in the morning. I tease her about this all
- 26:42Speaker 1: the time. When Robin Bertolucci was my superior and I've
- 26:49Speaker 1: been called back from vacation because of fires, you know
- 26:54Speaker 1: that that was working long hours getting things done. In
- 26:59Speaker 1: news talk is there is no sleep. I mean, it's
- 27:01Speaker 1: no joke when you hear Heather Brooker going, uh, yeah,
- 27:04Speaker 1: I went to bed late last night at eight because
- 27:07Speaker 1: she's got to get up at one. You know, it's
- 27:11Speaker 1: no joke when you have crazy hours. You know, Codo
- 27:15Speaker 1: going out just to have a night with his wife
- 27:18Speaker 1: or something. You got to calculate that in the sleep
- 27:20Speaker 1: time and all of those things play apart. But if
- 27:24Speaker 1: you're not finding that balance in there. If you're not
- 27:26Speaker 1: looking to unplug at some point, you're you're giving your
- 27:32Speaker 1: life in a way that's not going to pay you back.
- 27:36Speaker 1: Nobody's going to say, hey man, you really did it.
- 27:39Speaker 1: You're not going to get that big bonus. I should explain. Uh,
- 27:45Speaker 1: cono bonuses were something they used to give out years ago.
- 27:48Speaker 2: Yeah, what what is that opinion? For two years? Haven't
- 27:51Speaker 2: got a raise? Wow, I'll give you a raise, buddy,
- 27:56Speaker 2: what do you want?
- 27:56Speaker 1: How much you want? Oh, he's doing some math name
- 28:01Speaker 1: you got a pedil? Now's the time. No, I'm not
- 28:06Speaker 1: doing that. Yeah, I've done that. Shouldn't I've done it.
- 28:11Speaker 1: You're worth it for me, so you know, we all
- 28:14Speaker 1: say it, and I know that I haven't always been
- 28:17Speaker 1: great about it. But finding that time for yourself, I
- 28:19Speaker 1: think it only makes you a better employee. Getting out
- 28:23Speaker 1: of the getting away from it the office and looking
- 28:26Speaker 1: at things differently, I think is so powerful and ends
- 28:31Speaker 1: up being super refreshing and makes you better at your
- 28:35Speaker 1: job by seeing a perspective. If you're in the bubble
- 28:38Speaker 1: of work all the time, I think you become stagnant.
- 28:41Speaker 1: I think you become part of the wallpaper, rather than
- 28:44Speaker 1: seeing things and going, oh my gosh, I got a
- 28:46Speaker 1: great idea. This came to me where while I was
- 28:49Speaker 1: playing legos, you know, or watching a movie or reading
- 28:52Speaker 1: a book or playing with your kids. That's where the
- 28:56Speaker 1: ideas come from. They don't come from the mandate. I
- 28:59Speaker 1: hate that kind of creativity. They just do that all
- 29:01Speaker 1: the time. Hey, we just got money for a billboard.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Come up with something now. I'm like, okay, well give
- 29:09Speaker 1: me a minute think about it. And you know, have
- 29:13Speaker 1: some time for creativity, So take some time for yourself.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Good old uncle Neil's given you permission.
- 29:19Speaker 3: That's good advice.
- 29:20Speaker 2: Thanks, there's some good advice.
- 29:23Speaker 3: We got good advice for you.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Yay.
- 29:25Speaker 3: On a KI show.
- 29:26Speaker 2: She's like, I'm taking off right now by me.
- 29:29Speaker 1: It's New Year's Day everybody, January first, twenty twenty six.
- 29:35Speaker 1: And I will tell you this having a nine year old, yes,
- 29:39Speaker 1: you do learn about these things very early on, even
- 29:44Speaker 1: without cell phones and social media. This stuff travels in
- 29:48Speaker 1: schools with the young persons. So every year the Michigan
- 29:54Speaker 1: Michigan College Annual Banished Words List takes aim at viral
- 29:58Speaker 1: slang and here's thing with social media slang has a
- 30:05Speaker 1: shorter shelf life, so it comes quickly, it gets loud
- 30:10Speaker 1: and annoying, and then it kind of dies down. But
- 30:16Speaker 1: you know earlier, like we say in radio, the more
- 30:20Speaker 1: clever the spot or the more clever something is, the
- 30:24Speaker 1: shorter the shelf life. You hear the first time and go,
- 30:27Speaker 1: oh that's very funny, that's clever. Then you hear it
- 30:28Speaker 1: second time you go oh yeah, it's still clever, and
- 30:30Speaker 1: then the third time you're all a little less clever
- 30:33Speaker 1: because I just heard it for the third time and
- 30:35Speaker 1: it burns itself out well. Well, social media you get
- 30:38Speaker 1: a lot of these things and at the top is
- 30:40Speaker 1: six seven.
- 30:41Speaker 2: See sat of it? Brother? Uh it seeks sad.
- 30:47Speaker 1: To see my son grow up and do these things
- 30:52Speaker 1: is kind of fun because it's like, oh, he's growing
- 30:55Speaker 1: into a little you know, a little human where they
- 30:58Speaker 1: have their own sayings with his his buddies and they're
- 31:01Speaker 1: all boys and girls as in.
- 31:03Speaker 2: Their sixcess don't don't know. I see what you're doing now, kono.
- 31:11Speaker 6: Know, I know?
- 31:12Speaker 2: Uhh, I see it. Well, it's worded about this one.
- 31:15Speaker 4: To be honest, is that slang is usually like it
- 31:17Speaker 4: means something like cat no cat like you're lying.
- 31:20Speaker 1: You're not lying. Yeah, you know, I get it. It's
- 31:22Speaker 1: just one is it's nothing.
- 31:24Speaker 2: There's no meaning.
- 31:25Speaker 1: It means nothing, it will never mean anything. It's it's
- 31:29Speaker 1: the world's biggest inside joke that has no real punchline. Yeah,
- 31:34Speaker 1: it really doesn't mean anything.
- 31:37Speaker 2: I mean.
- 31:38Speaker 1: Parents are always like, well, what does that mean? It doesn't.
- 31:42Speaker 1: It's it's it's less meaningful than skivity. Like there they
- 31:52Speaker 1: get progressively or digressively less important, uh or meaningful as
- 31:58Speaker 1: they go.
- 31:58Speaker 2: But that's one of the ones.
- 31:59Speaker 1: It's the most overused phrase of twenty twenty five.
- 32:04Speaker 2: Exactly. Yeah, that's one of them. That's at the very top.
- 32:07Speaker 1: And I believe that what you do as a parent,
- 32:11Speaker 1: if you don't want to hear it is you don't
- 32:12Speaker 1: say hey, don't say that. You keep saying it. I'm on, like,
- 32:16Speaker 1: this is cool. I'm in the joke, and trust me,
- 32:19Speaker 1: they will run from it.
- 32:20Speaker 3: My daughter does is doing this thing where? And I
- 32:23Speaker 3: don't know if your son is doing this or or kno,
- 32:25Speaker 3: your kids are. I think of older kids, right, except for.
- 32:28Speaker 2: No, his you're younger. You have an eighteen year old.
- 32:30Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, doesn't say he's an older one older kid
- 32:33Speaker 3: there she does this thing where she like does this
- 32:36Speaker 3: line across her jaw, like they touch their jaw like this.
- 32:40Speaker 3: You have you ever seen that? Like it Like it's
- 32:43Speaker 3: like schul they pull their their cheeks in, they suck
- 32:46Speaker 3: their cheeks in, and then they go they drag their
- 32:48Speaker 3: their line on both sides, on both sides. Yeah, And
- 32:51Speaker 3: it's like, I'm like, what is that? And she's like,
- 32:53Speaker 3: you don't get it. You wouldn't get it. And I'm like, huh,
- 32:56Speaker 3: so now I've started doing it and she's like, what
- 32:57Speaker 3: are you doing?
- 32:59Speaker 2: Did you say you wouldn't get it, you wouldn't understand?
- 33:02Speaker 3: Yeah, pretty much. You got to give it, you got
- 33:04Speaker 3: to serve it right back to them.
- 33:05Speaker 2: I learned it at work. I learned it at work,
- 33:09Speaker 2: doesn't she said?
- 33:10Speaker 3: It's I guess it's like indicating having like a tight
- 33:13Speaker 3: jaw line, a strong jaw line, strong jaw. That's what
- 33:16Speaker 3: the kids and the and the boys are wanting right now.
- 33:19Speaker 3: So the boys do it, and then the girls you know,
- 33:22Speaker 3: repeat it, and they start doing this.
- 33:24Speaker 2: Does something similar where.
- 33:26Speaker 1: They touch their jaw or he also does that like
- 33:29Speaker 1: the uh the wonder wondering or thinking emoji where you
- 33:34Speaker 1: put your thumb on one side of your and yeah,
- 33:38Speaker 1: and then they're pointing finger on the other side of
- 33:41Speaker 1: your jaw like.
- 33:42Speaker 3: Hmm, yeah, she does that too, She'll do this.
- 33:46Speaker 1: Yeah, that's it's I don't know, but there's a bunch
- 33:50Speaker 1: of these banished words lists.
- 33:52Speaker 2: The words that are on there.
- 33:53Speaker 1: Demure, which came up was at the beginning of last
- 33:57Speaker 1: year when being demure and.
- 34:00Speaker 3: It was some I want to say it was maybe
- 34:02Speaker 3: earlier this year. There was a TikToker that was saying
- 34:06Speaker 3: that she was very demure, very mindful, and that went
- 34:09Speaker 3: crazy viral and everybody was saying, I'm very demure, very mindful.
- 34:14Speaker 2: Boy.
- 34:15Speaker 1: Incentivized was another one.
- 34:17Speaker 3: They say incentivized, The kids say incentivized.
- 34:19Speaker 2: These are overword over used words.
- 34:23Speaker 3: Just not for kidding, Okay. I was like, I've never
- 34:24Speaker 3: heard my daughter say incentivized.
- 34:26Speaker 2: You know.
- 34:26Speaker 1: Mad my Bad made the list again. It made the
- 34:31Speaker 1: list in nineteen ninety eight. Reach Out made the list
- 34:36Speaker 1: again this year. It made the list back in nineteen
- 34:39Speaker 1: ninety four. So some of these things cycle again. Gift
- 34:43Speaker 1: or gifted, like like someone gifted me, oh, gift. Oh,
- 34:50Speaker 1: as a matter of fact, you gifted me something. The
- 34:52Speaker 1: other day, you sent me a link to the coffee
- 34:54Speaker 1: that you loved.
- 34:55Speaker 3: Yeah, did you get that?
- 34:56Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 34:57Speaker 2: I would have had and ordered it.
- 34:58Speaker 3: Did you really?
- 34:59Speaker 2: Of course?
- 35:00Speaker 3: I'm so glad.
- 35:00Speaker 1: I want to hear what you think when somebody recommends
- 35:03Speaker 1: food or something to me. I take that as very wow.
- 35:11Speaker 1: I gotta tell you, in all honesty, Cono is laxadaisical.
- 35:16Speaker 1: He takes his job very loosely, and so I'm not
- 35:20Speaker 1: used to watching him move so fast. He jumped on
- 35:23Speaker 1: that like he was he's waiting, waiting for the fat joke.
- 35:27Speaker 3: And he's got a big smile on his face. He's
- 35:29Speaker 3: proud of himself on that one.
- 35:31Speaker 2: He as.
- 35:33Speaker 1: He moved so fast he almost slipped off those four
- 35:38Speaker 1: yellow page phone books that he's sitting on.
- 35:44Speaker 2: Boy, no I do. I'm not gonna get through it.
- 35:50Speaker 1: I do take it seriously when someone recommends something to me,
- 35:53Speaker 1: because that's like a personal like, hey, can you try this,
- 35:56Speaker 1: not just food but a movie or things like that.
- 35:59Speaker 3: Cone, well, enjoy it. I want to know what you think.
- 36:03Speaker 3: It's delicio. I had people actually message me on Instagram
- 36:05Speaker 3: asking me about it as well.
- 36:06Speaker 1: Oh smelling it. So if it say the name and
- 36:10Speaker 1: explain so that people know sure.
- 36:13Speaker 3: So it is called Cometeer Coffee and it is frozen
- 36:17Speaker 3: concentrated coffee that comes in little pods that gets shipped
- 36:21Speaker 3: to your house. It's like a subscription service if you
- 36:23Speaker 3: like it and you keep it in the freezer and
- 36:25Speaker 3: then you just thow it out at hot water and
- 36:28Speaker 3: you got fresh coffee. And it's like comes in blends
- 36:30Speaker 3: that you can choose, like almost like a wine blend,
- 36:32Speaker 3: Like I want something a little more bold with notes
- 36:35Speaker 3: of chocolate and almond, and you can.
- 36:38Speaker 1: Just no pretense, but a slight, precocious finish.
- 36:42Speaker 3: A precocious finish on my java.
- 36:44Speaker 1: But I will tell you, as you were opening it,
- 36:47Speaker 1: you said, just give it a smell, and I was like,
- 36:48Speaker 1: holy smokes. And I'm a very I'm very dedicated to
- 36:52Speaker 1: Cafe Leave, which is our that's an espresso that we use. Yeah,
- 36:56Speaker 1: it's from the Don Francisco family, and it's huge.
- 37:01Speaker 2: We buy we buy lots of it.
- 37:03Speaker 1: And but when someone tells me you've got to try
- 37:05Speaker 1: this and it has that aroma, I'm like, dad, you
- 37:09Speaker 1: got to try that.
- 37:10Speaker 3: There is something really just amazing about the smell of
- 37:14Speaker 3: a fresh coffee and the way that they're able to
- 37:16Speaker 3: capture that in like a frozen pod. It's pretty impressive.
- 37:19Speaker 1: And you can add cold water and have it as
- 37:21Speaker 1: iced coffee, or you can add hot water and have
- 37:23Speaker 1: it as absolutely Yeah, So forward to it on your
- 37:27Speaker 1: best and I'm looking forward to trying it yay, And
- 37:32Speaker 1: it's I do take it seriously, Cono when someone offers something,
- 37:38Speaker 1: not just food, but are you going to finish that
- 37:41Speaker 1: bigel in there or.
- 37:44Speaker 3: Share it with us?
- 37:45Speaker 6: Now?
- 37:45Speaker 3: I can't believe nobody brought in like, nobody brought in
- 37:48Speaker 3: some New Year snacks for the crew. That's here.
- 37:50Speaker 1: I was up till we get that you're talking to
- 37:52Speaker 1: me because oh no, I was just.
- 37:54Speaker 3: Talking like management. Maybe if any managers are listening, help
- 37:58Speaker 3: help us out.
- 37:58Speaker 2: We're the only people.
- 38:00Speaker 3: No, I mean, they could have had like some portos
