- 0:04SPEAKER_03: We've also got Brian Tran and Daiki Tanabi from Sydney.
- 0:08SPEAKER_03: So welcome guys to the pod.
- 0:10SPEAKER_03: Thanks for having us.
- 0:11SPEAKER_03: Before we get started, just tell us a bit about yourselves.
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Brian.
- 0:14SPEAKER_01: So I just uh just transitioned to pickleball just recently, just um start of last year by this guy.
- 0:21SPEAKER_01: This guy this guy somehow got me on the court.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: We used to play tennis together, obviously, and um had fun.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: Just played a bit of a bit of tournies here in uh like here and there in Sydney, and yeah, we we did alright, I guess.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: And then now here now we're here like traveling and shit.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: So it's pretty good.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: That's awesome.
- 0:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you got you two of the kings of Sydney.
- 0:42SPEAKER_03: Is that how true those are?
- 0:43SPEAKER_04: Uh nah.
- 0:44SPEAKER_04: No, you got Mitch and Ryan Henry.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: That's Ryan Henry is pretty solid.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: Um I'd say we're I'd say we're we're up there.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: We're there.
- 0:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we're trying to be there.
- 0:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 0:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 0:55SPEAKER_04: No, it's good.
- 0:56SPEAKER_04: Um, I guess I'll go.
- 0:57SPEAKER_04: I'm Daiki or Daikey, however you want to say it.
- 1:00SPEAKER_04: Um how do you say it?
- 1:01SPEAKER_04: I say I say daiki just because I don't know.
- 1:04SPEAKER_04: When I was younger, like my mum always say daikey, it rhymes with Nike, and I'm like, that's so lir.
- 1:11SPEAKER_04: I just preached that.
- 1:12SPEAKER_04: But that's actually how you're supposed to say it.
- 1:14SPEAKER_04: Like in Japanese, you say daikey.
- 1:16SPEAKER_04: So um that's actually how you say it, but I say daiki.
- 1:18SPEAKER_04: Um waiting for a Nike sponsorship now.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we're waiting for Nike.
- 1:25SPEAKER_04: Um but yes, I got into um pickleball um by my friend Takara Inukai, so another friend.
- 1:32SPEAKER_04: Shout out Takara.
- 1:33SPEAKER_04: He also used to play tennis and we played like juniors growing up since we were like 12, but then you know, reconnected um after I came back from the States, and then we're going to the gym together, but then his mate was like, Oh, why don't we like he was like trying to build like a um pickleball community, like a social, and then we're just like, oh, let's just go get on court and let's just see how it is.
- 1:52SPEAKER_04: But then every like I was like, bro, pickleball, like I just play that, like we all is that, and then I was like, I don't want to play it, but I was like, okay, sure, fine.
- 2:00SPEAKER_04: And then we were using like five dollar like rackets from Kmart, and he had like a rhombus that was like carbon fiber, so good.
- 2:07SPEAKER_04: And then we were playing and he was smashing me, and I was like, bro, I used to never lose this guy in tennis.
- 2:12SPEAKER_04: Like, how is this guy beating me?
- 2:14SPEAKER_04: But then since then, like it's just been so fun, and then obviously got this guy on board.
- 2:19SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, no, it's been a it's been a roller coaster, and it's been good.
- 2:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's awesome.
- 2:23SPEAKER_03: How good were you guys at tennis?
- 2:25SPEAKER_03: Um what where where did we go?
- 2:27SPEAKER_03: This guy was a freak, bro.
- 2:28SPEAKER_03: This guy was insane.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: Heard a bit about the Brian Tram back in the day.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: This guy was insane.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: Look, like I used to like be in the National Academy with like the big boys now, so like Demonar and like Max Passell, Popperin, whatnot, used to train together like every day.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, now you're playing people.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: Now I'm playing this.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: I don't know how this happened, but yeah, um, like yeah, so I'd say I was pretty solid.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: Uh I was a good junior back in the day, but obviously uh injuries would come and go here and there.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: I had some elbow surgeries, some wrist, wrist problems, and then you know, I just started just taking it a bit easier.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: Like the body was not really really ready to be playing.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: So yeah, then just did some study and uh yeah, that's pretty much it.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: What did you study?
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: Uh studied chiropractic.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: So only just recently graduated last year.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: Congrats, man.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: Congrats.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: Thank you, thank you.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, so like now I'm just uh starting out, like starting out a new job soon, and uh hopefully that goes well.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: And then just trying to balance that and pickleball at the same time.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: That's awesome.
- 3:40SPEAKER_03: It's a hard it's a hard balance.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, tough balance.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's like always traveling, and especially if you want to like get better at pickle, like you you have to get the reps in, right?
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: Like have to play more matches, more against like good top players, and yeah, that's why that's why we're here, I guess.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: So how much play do you guys usually get in per week?
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: Oh, like four, yeah, three four.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: Four, four times a week, maybe like yeah, it was like after you yeah, like after work, yeah.
- 4:07SPEAKER_04: Like I do full-time work, so just try and get reps in during the week, like Tuesday, Wednesdays is pretty consistent for us, and then maybe like an occasional Thursday, Friday.
- 4:15SPEAKER_04: But and then do like weekends will probably just be like like one of the days.
- 4:19SPEAKER_04: Just try and drill.
- 4:20SPEAKER_04: Um, shout out to Ashton, shout out to Clara.
- 4:23SPEAKER_04: Ashton, my boy, shout out to Ashton.
- 4:25SPEAKER_04: Let's go! Shout out to Ashton sat a rough with his um with his hammy, but like now he's back, or he's kind of back, and he's I think he's feeling better, but yeah.
- 4:33SPEAKER_03: That guy, that guy's possibly one of the most exciting prospects, eh?
- 4:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, literally, like he's still young, he's still so much, but yeah, he's playing well, yeah.
- 4:42SPEAKER_04: He also came from a tennis background, like, but just yeah, gun tennis player too, from what I heard.
- 4:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it was good, and then just riddled with injuries, same as same as this guy.
- 4:50SPEAKER_04: So but yeah, that guy's free, like that kid's a freak.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: So yeah, it's good, like pickleball is just it's a lot easier on the body, you know.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: Like the paddles are light, like you're not you're not moving as much.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: You're still moving, like singles is ridiculous.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but it's like a different type of fitness, yeah.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: Like you have you have to be strong and like fast, but you know, tennis is like you have to have good cardio, and uh I was terrible.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: Awful, like so unfit, but you know, some that's what I'm saying.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: Back then they didn't they didn't have the Strava back then.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: No one could try I guess nowadays, like yeah, like this is okay for me, and like uh you know, the body's not feeling too bad.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: So, how do you go?
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: How do you guys structure the training?
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Like, how much drilling versus match play are you doing?
- 5:39SPEAKER_04: Um, I think like Tuesday and Wednesdays, we usually just play matches.
- 5:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we still just play matches because you know I think that's just the most fun.
- 5:48SPEAKER_04: Like, obviously, like I'm trying to be more the guy that's been like, hey, like let's try and drill, let's try let's play like 7-Eleven, but everyone else is just like bro, like come on, let's just play.
- 5:57SPEAKER_04: Um that's your weekly to Dike, bro.
- 6:00SPEAKER_04: So that's why I'm just like that's why like that's why on weekends I'll just get like no Ashton Caro or this guy, um, Selena, like just a one-on-one, and then just try and drill, like try to play those games because I think it's a lot easier when you do it one-on-one or two V1s.
- 6:14SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah.
- 6:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so noted noted basically Brian doesn't get a call up for drills.
- 6:21SPEAKER_03: Everyone, everyone else's gym gets a call up, he hates it like he hates it.
- 6:24SPEAKER_03: He hates it.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm just like obviously drilling is like you is needed.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, it's just it's pretty boring.
- 6:34SPEAKER_05: Uh so stupid.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: Anyways, no, like definitely, definitely is needed.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: I do drill like once or twice a week, like either with this guy or anyone.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: But yeah, no, definitely, definitely.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: We try to make it fun, like yeah, try and make it fun.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: Match play is just fun and it's like social, it's chill.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: Like, that's what I came to play pickle for.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: Like, it's a bit lighthearted and like just fun.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: Um, and then when you start drilling and like get serious, I'm like yeah, it takes the fun out of it, but yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:06SPEAKER_04: If you start playing points and stuff, I think that's where we try and find the fun.
- 7:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: So obviously, you boys come from, as you mentioned, a tennis background.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Making that transition to pickleball, what's the the biggest difference that you've noted?
- 7:21SPEAKER_04: Like, or for me, oh I don't know, for me, it's like obviously the length of the paddle is a lot shorter, so you gotta get closer to the ball.
- 7:29SPEAKER_04: I feel like in tennis, like you actually want to like extend your arm out more versus in pickle, you kind of be gotta be super close to the ball just to control it, and obviously, like it's tougher to get shape and you know move the ball around as much.
- 7:43SPEAKER_04: It's a lot more compact.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, like yeah, there's just like a couple skills that you gotta learn, like different shots, like a dink or like a flick, you know, like that was probably how long did you work on that one?
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: How many how many draw sessions did you take to learn that?
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: A couple socials like just tagging everybody against Josh's favorite six-year-olds.
- 8:08SPEAKER_03: He's got one of the toughest flicks I've dealt with.
- 8:10SPEAKER_03: Oh, so we've got a few things to learn, Dougie.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: What's what's what's the secret source?
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: Oh, I don't even know.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: Tell me more.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: Just hit it.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: Like, no, like I don't know, just just like the small things that like like obviously you just watch like I don't know, like the Americans play, and then you you can kind of pick up on like the footwork and how they how they move compared to us, like tennis players, we move a lot and like we're we're taking like multiple steps to like a ball.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: But like I feel like it's like very compact now, and then you obviously not swing as much, right?
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: Like we used to have like massive swings.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: I feel like you had the biggest swing of all time, like forehand, like it still goes back fans.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: That's true, yeah.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: But yeah, like now, like we've we've like compacted it a lot.
- 8:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so like I've like halved my swing.
- 9:00SPEAKER_03: Actually, it's so interesting you say that the movement as well is compact.
- 9:04SPEAKER_03: It's like how do you it's efficient, yeah.
- 9:06SPEAKER_03: But how do you engage your brain to go?
- 9:08SPEAKER_03: I'm moving less, but I also still need to be intense.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so like you know, I don't know.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: Like, for example, I move out for a dink.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: I used to like take four steps to there, and like now it's just like one shuffle, and then I'm you know, kind of kind of back.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: Like, I can see why you don't like drilling.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: It's good for me.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: It's good for me because like I hated moving back in the day, so now it's like I'm moving way less, and all you gotta do is just think about I don't know, like it's all about the skill in the hands and whatnot.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: So you're where you need to be.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: This is why you're gonna be able to do it.
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, this is why it's like suiting me, like sort of, I guess.
- 10:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, that's cool.
- 11:00SPEAKER_03: Now, obviously, in Sydney, I've I've obviously come and seen you guys a fair bit, and yeah, um, it seems like there's just a massive pickleball community going on there.
- 11:08SPEAKER_03: Um, and I I think you two would, but I also from outside could see it.
- 11:13SPEAKER_03: Um, Auburn picklebears, like just boys, yeah.
- 11:17SPEAKER_04: Shout out Anne, Charles, Chris, Chris, Kathy, all the crew.
- 11:21SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:21SPEAKER_04: I think they're one of the like probably the bigger pickleball communities in in Sydney.
- 11:25SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah, that's kind of where we started.
- 11:28SPEAKER_04: Well, um, where yeah, we were both started like the socials and stuff there, and they're doing a really good job in just like building the community, you know, getting a lot of people to play out in socials.
- 11:37SPEAKER_04: They're all great people as well.
- 11:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and like that's super nice.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: I'm just so long, you know.
- 11:41SPEAKER_04: I think that's the one thing as well.
- 11:42SPEAKER_04: It's like in tennis, like you don't, I don't know.
- 11:45SPEAKER_04: I guess we were playing like juniors, so like you know, it gets so competitive, it's you know, people like coming out your throat, like you know, and then off court, it's like you don't really talk as much, you know, you're kind of just keeping to yourself versus like in pickle, you're kind of just yeah, you're every out and about and like just chatting, just chatting, yeah.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: That's cool.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: It's just a game.
- 12:01SPEAKER_03: So everyone just you know, yeah, vibes, good vibes there.
- 12:04SPEAKER_03: It's it's giving the vibe of like the pickleball version of run clubs.
- 12:09SPEAKER_03: The I feel like the pickle bears, I feel like the pickle bears are like the closest version of what pickleball could be to run clubs, yeah.
- 12:15SPEAKER_03: For sure.
- 12:15SPEAKER_03: 100%.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, they've done really well, yeah.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: They've done well.
- 12:18SPEAKER_03: Well, so what do they do so well to keep that going?
- 12:22SPEAKER_04: I mean, they all like the three, like the three guys that run it, there's three of them, like Chris, yeah.
- 12:27SPEAKER_04: I mean, they love pickleball, you know.
- 12:29SPEAKER_01: So they're always out there, they're they're always playing, like every I feel like they have a social on every day, almost every day.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: That's sick though, yeah, and like all different levels, and it's always like it's always all different levels.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: Like you can be like a 2-0, like full beginner, and like there's a there's a spot for you, 3-0, 4-0, whatever.
- 12:47SPEAKER_03: That's good though, like especially for you guys to be able to go there as well and just be like, let's just play and have fun.
- 12:53SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah, I feel like I mean this is not a shot, but I just want more people to hear about it.
- 12:57SPEAKER_03: Like, I feel like more pros need to be able to engage with the city.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, even sometimes I still just go and I I just I just go here and there on Thursdays.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, like it's just good fun.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: Like, I obviously don't have to do like do something like any crazy or like try it super hard.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: Don't flick at those two eyes.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: I try my best, but look, like it's just good fun just being there and just like having a hit, you know.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: And they're all they're all good, you know.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: They're all improving, they want to get better.
- 13:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and I feel like these communities are just growing, like even like bigger boy in the park, like in Eastwood, yeah.
- 13:33SPEAKER_04: Shout out Rakesh and um Pankash.
- 13:36SPEAKER_04: Um, they'd all let it they let us train there.
- 13:38SPEAKER_04: Because I feel like in Sydney it's so tough to get caught sometimes, and then you know, we book last minute, but there's so many socials going on at the same time, you know.
- 13:45SPEAKER_04: But sometimes we just want to like hit ourselves, book a court.
- 13:47SPEAKER_04: So, you know, Rakesh was really nice.
- 13:50SPEAKER_04: Like, he plays in like competitive, like um, like tournaments here and there, and then he's here this weekend.
- 13:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he's here this weekend, he's playing singles.
- 13:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yes, and he's been really nice in like just you know, um accommodating to us um and just like you know, allowing us to have a court, yeah.
- 14:03SPEAKER_04: Um whenever we won.
- 14:04SPEAKER_04: So shout out Rakesh, my guy.
- 14:07SPEAKER_04: A lot of shout outs this epic.
- 14:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we've got to be a big thing.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: Big shout out, shout out absolutely everyone.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, actually.
- 14:12SPEAKER_03: No, and like I think that's just so cool because obviously the guys in Sydney, you guys have got a limited amount of courts, but it just seems like the community really just gathers amongst each other.
- 14:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think I don't know if in Melbourne maybe we have too many courts to the point where maybe it's harder to just gain all of the um community together.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because I think a lot like especially with the weather down here as well, right?
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: Like we don't have that outdoor sort of just rock up and play sort of thing.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: A lot of it's you know, it's all books, you're doing it, you know, there might be social sessions, yeah, but it's usually sort of done by skill level and that sort of thing.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: I mean, I was shocked to hear how many indoor courts you guys got.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you guys have so many indoor because it's crazy, yeah.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: You guys have so many.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: I mean, it makes sense, Melbourne.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but but yeah, um, yeah, like we don't have that many indoor courts.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think they're starting to pop up now.
- 15:02SPEAKER_04: Like a lot of the Pickler coming as well.
- 15:04SPEAKER_04: We've got yeah, that's in Kranala downtown.
- 15:06SPEAKER_04: Is that already open?
- 15:08SPEAKER_04: I don't think so.
- 15:09SPEAKER_04: No idea.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but yeah, like we have you know, Central Pick.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: Um they'll yeah, shout out Central Pick.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: Central pick out Central Pig.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: I mean I coach there as well.
- 15:21SPEAKER_02: This guy's fully wanting a sponsorship.
- 15:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I saw the first episode.
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: I saw the first episode.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: I was reading, yeah.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: Central pick and racketeer probably look like that.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: Raketeer's nice, yeah.
- 15:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they're they're nice courts and um yeah, even paddle club up in North Park.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: But there's only a like a handful, right?
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, whereas you guys got uh quite quite a bit of a couple of things.
- 15:45SPEAKER_03: So how filled how filled do the courts get at those?
- 15:48SPEAKER_03: Ridiculous, yeah, ridiculous.
- 15:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: I think I think if you like book now, you wouldn't book you wouldn't be able to get a court next Friday.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, really, yeah.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: Like at night time, obviously.
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but yeah, wow.
- 15:59SPEAKER_04: During the day, people like waiting like two weeks out, yeah, just to like book a court, yeah.
- 16:03SPEAKER_04: Really?
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: So like every night, every weeknight's full.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh, any weeknight is just fully packed, and weekends are borderline packed, yeah.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: So that's why like that's super cool.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: Got a hit during the day or like I don't know, find a find a park.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, pick up the park, yeah.
- 16:21SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 16:22SPEAKER_03: So eastwood.
- 16:24SPEAKER_03: Love it.
- 16:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's their first shout out.
- 16:27SPEAKER_03: You're on watch now.
- 16:30SPEAKER_03: No, it's I think it resembles um obviously in Malaysia.
- 16:34SPEAKER_03: They I talked to the guys there, and when they've built their first court, they actually you could bid more money to book in advance.
- 16:43SPEAKER_03: So you had to book like at least a month in advance.
- 16:47SPEAKER_03: But if you wanted so the longer in advance you wanted to book, you actually had to pay, I think, a certain bit more or something.
- 16:53SPEAKER_03: Oh, really?
- 16:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so people like let's say people wanted to do like every Friday, you would have to bid like a higher amount per hour.
- 17:00SPEAKER_03: That's crazy.
- 17:02SPEAKER_03: That's the rush that was there.
- 17:03SPEAKER_03: It was like everyone wanted a court, and it was like every single hour was full.
- 17:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, wow.
- 17:08SPEAKER_03: Like, I think they talk about capacity, and uh I I just met I saw the owners a couple of weeks ago, and they were just saying, like, we were borderline, like 85% full for the whole day, every single day.
- 17:19SPEAKER_03: Like off peak times, too.
- 17:21SPEAKER_03: Like crazy.
- 17:22SPEAKER_03: No, that's crazy.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: Like how many locations do they have?
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: Like, well, in that time, two weeks ago, they were the only one.
- 17:28SPEAKER_03: But now there's like there's like a hundred.
- 17:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, it's like a hundred there now, so it's a bit different in that landscape.
- 17:33SPEAKER_03: But I mean, obviously, for you guys, it sounds like that's pretty similar because you're two weeks out booked.
- 17:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but it's so hard.
- 17:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's tough.
- 17:40SPEAKER_03: It's tough.
- 17:40SPEAKER_03: When you want to do a draw session with Brian Tran, yeah, that guy's gonna pull out on you two weeks in advance, just running away from me.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: Amazing.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's tough when like, for example, like Darky works full time, you know, and so like the only times we can hit is either super early in the morning, which is no, I'm not doing that, or like 6 p.m.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: 7 p.m.
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: And yeah, so it's we can't get a caught.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, what do you do full-time Darkey?
- 18:08SPEAKER_04: I'm in uh media sales, so I work at um News Corp, just selling selling ads digital, uh digitally.
- 18:14SPEAKER_04: So yeah, nobody's doing so many shit.
- 18:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I don't know.
- 18:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, exactly.
- 18:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah, man.
- 18:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we're gonna plug it all in.
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: Man's always working.
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: Yes, not stop.
- 18:25SPEAKER_02: I don't stop.
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: The guy don't stop.
- 18:27SPEAKER_02: He was so keen to be on this pub.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: Sweet many annual leave.
- 18:33SPEAKER_04: Uh too funny.
- 18:34SPEAKER_04: But yeah, like even me, like even working full time, like sometimes I get work from home days, like on Wednesday and Friday, so I try and fit a session in like like during those times at lunch, like on lunch breaks.
- 18:44SPEAKER_03: The old the good old lunch breaks.
- 18:45SPEAKER_04: Lunch breaks, yeah.
- 18:46SPEAKER_04: Just for like just for an hour.
- 18:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, just for an hour.
- 18:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 18:51SPEAKER_04: Just for an hour.
- 18:52SPEAKER_04: You're watching this.
- 18:54SPEAKER_02: I've not, I'm not.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: I'm not managed to know what you're doing.
- 18:57SPEAKER_03: All right, we'll get we'll get to a part where we ask you guys what your biggest hot take in pickable might be.
- 19:03SPEAKER_03: Do you guys want to work out who goes first?
- 19:05SPEAKER_03: You go first, mate.
- 19:05SPEAKER_03: You go first.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: Maybe just the just the PPA draws, maybe maybe there could be a bit of variety rather than you know one one seed versus eight seed, uh two versus seven.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: No, it's like structured in that.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: I feel like it's always structured like that, and you're always playing the same team if you're you know, like if you're not progressing or have an upset, like you're always gonna play that that that team, you know.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: Um, I feel like there has to be maybe a switch up, maybe even like it's like back in tennis, you know, if you like if you look at the same drawers, it's like one versus six even or one versus seven, you know, and then number eight would verse three.
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, like I feel like I don't I don't know if that's a hot take, but yeah.
- 19:52SPEAKER_03: I think it's really interesting because I mean those guys that are maybe in that seven or eight seed spot, uh it's really hard to progress through the quarters unless you really piece it together.
- 20:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 20:01SPEAKER_03: And then someone else might take that might exceed you.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: And that's probably why like you always see like Zach, Mitch, Joey, whatnot, like you know, Lucas.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: Like they're always at the in the finals and they're always there.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: But you know, like I guess I guess that's just like my take.
- 20:20SPEAKER_03: Like who have you who have you seen the most given a specific spot?
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: I feel like I've seen Mitch quite a bit, and I've seen Mitch and Joey.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: Mitch and Joey, like probably the most, which is not not a great th they're so they're so strong, you know.
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: But but yeah, no, I don't know, maybe a bit of variety, that's all.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, nice.
- 20:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 20:46SPEAKER_04: I don't even know how the drawers worked, to be fair.
- 20:48SPEAKER_04: I never looked at it.
- 20:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'm an idiot.
- 20:53SPEAKER_04: It's like, oh, you again.
- 20:56SPEAKER_04: I had no idea.
- 20:58SPEAKER_04: Um my pickleball hot take, um, it's not that much of a hot take.
- 21:03SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 21:04SPEAKER_04: I guess like to get more players in, I think at the professional level, they probably have to start showing singles more than doubles.
- 21:11SPEAKER_04: I think singles is more, it's like a one-on-one kind of gladiator battle, similar, very similar to tennis, which obviously brings in a lot of eyeballs.
- 21:20SPEAKER_04: So, you know, getting those crazy like points where people are put like hitting passing shots or you know, I don't know, like mini like hands about the net and then finishing the point.
- 21:28SPEAKER_04: And I don't know, just to get this more people into the sport instead of like the dinking rallies where there's like a hundred dinks and people are speeding up, like you probably need the singles action more.
- 21:38SPEAKER_04: And I'm not even a singles guy.
- 21:41SPEAKER_04: You are I don't like, I don't know, like I prefer playing doubles now, but like, yeah, like singles, I don't know, it probably needs to be more shown more to get more people in.
- 21:50SPEAKER_04: I don't know, that's my take.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think I think it's like for the public, like they probably want to see some, you know, some crazy, some some crazy stuff.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, whereas like you know, I think they probably don't know how hard it is to really get those rallies going.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but but like, yeah, it's actually so tough.
- 22:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, even when we first started, we're like, truly like he's like not that.
- 22:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like a high level.
- 22:15SPEAKER_03: You got guys like Harry Brown and all that just reach the hill, just reaching in with their long maconna, they just go here and then like, but they just flick at you.
- 22:23SPEAKER_04: It's like no, like what happened to us?
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so you gotta get like, yeah, you gotta actually use your legs to get it.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: But yeah, like I think just the public probably doesn't see how hard it really is to dink and like to play those like long points in the kitchen.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but yeah, like I agree.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, definitely some flashy stuff would be more ideal to the public, I reckon.
- 22:47SPEAKER_03: What's like the flashiest shot in your opinion?
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: I don't know, just on the stretch, on the stretch passing shot.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: Or like through the legs, like I don't know, some Carl Stoker stuff or something like that.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: Behind the back?
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, behind the back, through the legs, crazy.
- 23:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that guy's nice.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but you know, you don't see that that much in dubs.
- 23:07SPEAKER_01: And singles like it can be some crazy stuff like around the post, like from the baseline, you know?
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's pretty crazy.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: That's pretty crazy.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:15SPEAKER_03: To land that a lot of skill.
- 23:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 23:18SPEAKER_04: I think it's getting better though.
- 23:19SPEAKER_04: Like I think before it was worse where there was a lot of dinky, but now you see more like far tens and doubles.
- 23:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 23:24SPEAKER_04: There's more drives as well.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: I think with the paddles and stuff, like all the spin that they they put in there and whatnot.
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: I don't even know.
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:32SPEAKER_04: So it's getting better, but I still think singles would probably attract more views.
- 23:38SPEAKER_03: That's a pretty good take.
- 23:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 23:39SPEAKER_04: I like that take actually.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: How good are you at singles?
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: Absolutely rubbish.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: I've got no racket sports background.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: So like that whole thing makes no sense.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: I went from literally playing dabbles all the time to like playing a singles comp, and I was like, what the hell are these lines?
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: I don't understand what's going on.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: I stick solely here.
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, what did you play going up?
- 24:00SPEAKER_00: Uh definitely not well, not racket sports, but uh a little bit of football, yeah, martial arts.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: Okay, nice.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: Um I was primarily sort of creative academic.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: So yeah, yeah.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's some good skills to have.
- 24:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 24:14SPEAKER_03: I actually think it's like one of the hardest things to go from zero racket sport background to just like playing it the older you get.
- 24:20SPEAKER_03: Like I I reckon when we were kids, it was like kind of easier.
- 24:23SPEAKER_03: For sure, yeah.
- 24:24SPEAKER_03: You're building up that skill.
- 24:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 24:27SPEAKER_03: So yeah, big kudos, big shout out to those people who uh didn't have a bad racket sport background.
- 24:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and playing at the highest level, yeah.
- 24:33SPEAKER_04: I think Joey, I don't think Joey everyone.
- 24:35SPEAKER_03: Joey was soccer.
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: Joey was soccer, yeah.
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: That's crazy.
- 24:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, stupid.
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: Actually not.
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because like there's still like muscle memory from like playing tennis for like 20 years, right?
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: It's like there's still like very similar similarities, like how you move on court and like I still can't hit a backhand.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's that's so true.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like exactly backhand.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: So from your guys' perspective, then for someone who's coming into the sport with no racket sports background, how would you go about like teaching someone to learn the skills of pickleball?
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: Great question.
- 25:11SPEAKER_01: Great question.
- 25:11SPEAKER_01: I mean just playing.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: I mean, I do a bit of coaching.
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: Um I'd have a good answer then.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: I feel like I feel like uh like teaching them just like the technique and the mechanics to it would would help the most and and how to move their feet.
- 25:30SPEAKER_01: Because I you get those two hand in hand and like how like the body works, you know, like just like the rotation and you know the chain of like going this way, that way, you know, something like that.
- 25:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think the footwork is such a big part of it.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: Like if I'm caught out on a point most of the time, be like, I mean what was I doing with my feet?
- 25:47SPEAKER_00: Nothing good.
- 25:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean you see beginners play, like they're just using their arm, like you know, they don't know they don't know that you can you gotta move and like you gotta use your whole body to kind of like hit the ball, yeah, and be positioned well to like be stable through the chat as well.
- 26:00SPEAKER_04: I think like even filming yourself and like you know, getting them like filming them and then watching them like seeing like hey, like this is actually how you're moving, like compared to what you think like you're moving.
- 26:11SPEAKER_04: I think that can help as well, just re-watching yourself, seeing how you hit the wall.
- 26:14SPEAKER_04: It's actually kind of shocking.
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: I was like, I'm gonna delete that footage.
- 26:19SPEAKER_03: I didn't know I was two meters from the board.
- 26:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but like even just watching like videos, like watching people play, watching pros play or watching I don't know, good players play.
- 26:30SPEAKER_01: That would probably help.
- 26:31SPEAKER_03: You better might have to YouTube Brian Tran highlights 2026.
- 26:36SPEAKER_03: Cheer highlights might have to do uh all three of us, watch some uh MPL highlights, MPL highlights shout out Dinkers.
- 26:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, did we ever play a match where it was you two against me and Ashton?
- 26:50SPEAKER_03: No, we didn't.
- 26:51SPEAKER_03: Oh, we didn't get that.
- 26:52SPEAKER_03: We had you and Steph.
- 26:54SPEAKER_03: That's actually that's actually Ashton's bad.
- 26:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, unlucky Ashton.
- 26:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, lucky.
- 27:00SPEAKER_03: It could happen.
- 27:01SPEAKER_03: Could happen.
- 27:02SPEAKER_03: Oh well.
- 27:03SPEAKER_03: Uh we'll end with this one.
- 27:05SPEAKER_03: Uh we'll do a World Cup hot take because the World Cup's on, obviously, now.
- 27:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 27:08SPEAKER_03: And uh what we might do, we'll do a 4-4-2 structure for those who don't know.
- 27:12SPEAKER_03: Four defenders, four midfielders, two strikers.
- 27:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and you guys are gonna draft the pickleball players and why like why you're gonna do that.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: Okay, uh just just the Australian scene, or are we including international?
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: No, let's do Aussie.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: Let's do Aussie, let's keep it Aussie.
- 27:28SPEAKER_01: Keep it Aussie.
- 27:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: Goalkeeper.
- 27:31SPEAKER_01: Goalkeeper.
- 27:32SPEAKER_03: Should we do one each?
- 27:33SPEAKER_04: I reckon we do one each.
- 27:34SPEAKER_01: Okay, or maybe do like a snake draft.
- 27:35SPEAKER_04: All right, let's do that.
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: Alternate it.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: Alright, goalkeeper.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: Goalkeeper.
- 27:39SPEAKER_04: Oh no, no, we'll create one team.
- 27:41SPEAKER_04: Like, but yeah, we'll see one.
- 27:43SPEAKER_04: Okay, yeah, yeah.
- 27:43SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 27:43SPEAKER_04: Okay, alright.
- 27:45SPEAKER_04: Goalkeeper.
- 27:46SPEAKER_01: Sarhill.
- 27:46SPEAKER_04: Sahel or Connor, bro.
- 27:47SPEAKER_01: Sahil Connor.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: I mean, Sahel.
- 27:51SPEAKER_01: Sahil, Sahel as the goalie.
- 27:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, bro.
- 27:53SPEAKER_01: That guy's crazy.
- 27:55SPEAKER_01: We gotta we need tall guys in the ball.
- 27:57SPEAKER_03: Tall guys, yeah, tall people at the backs.
- 27:58SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 27:59SPEAKER_03: We need some quick wingers, though.
- 28:00SPEAKER_03: Uh like left backs and right backs.
- 28:03SPEAKER_03: Ooh, do you need quick nah?
- 28:04SPEAKER_03: We just need tall people just to like clear out the ball.
- 28:06SPEAKER_03: No, just just clear the left.
- 28:07SPEAKER_01: We'll get Harry.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, we'll get Harry.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: So we got we got what?
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: Harry at the back.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: Harry, we got Connor.
- 28:13SPEAKER_01: We got Connor.
- 28:14SPEAKER_01: We got Ollie.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: Oli Gray.
- 28:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Ollie Gray.
- 28:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but three giants.
- 28:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, three giants.
- 28:19SPEAKER_04: Um Dan Fogle, Dan Fogel.
- 28:20SPEAKER_04: Dan Fogle.
- 28:21SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Dan Fogle at the back.
- 28:23SPEAKER_03: Dan's pretty tall.
- 28:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 28:24SPEAKER_04: Um Middle Midfield.
- 28:26SPEAKER_04: Four.
- 28:27SPEAKER_04: We'll go Nigel and um back.
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: We gotta have we gotta have like quick, quick players.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, quick, yeah, quick players.
- 28:32SPEAKER_01: I'll just run the ball.
- 28:33SPEAKER_01: Nigel.
- 28:34SPEAKER_01: Nigel.
- 28:34SPEAKER_01: Can we go left side?
- 28:35SPEAKER_01: Should we get cheer?
- 28:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: Should we get cheer?
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 28:40SPEAKER_01: This is my view.
- 28:42SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: Cheer in the midfield.
- 28:44SPEAKER_01: Cheer and midfield.
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: Midfield.
- 28:45SPEAKER_04: Engine room.
- 28:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 28:46SPEAKER_04: And and ashton.
- 28:48SPEAKER_04: Ashton.
- 28:48SPEAKER_04: Oh, what a duo.
- 28:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 28:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and then couz.
- 28:52SPEAKER_04: Coos.
- 28:52SPEAKER_04: Yes, yes.
- 28:53SPEAKER_04: Matt Koos on the on the right.
- 28:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 28:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no.
- 28:55SPEAKER_04: So you got, yeah.
- 28:56SPEAKER_04: And then you got your two.
- 28:57SPEAKER_04: That's a four.
- 28:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 28:58SPEAKER_04: And then two strikers.
- 28:59SPEAKER_04: Two strikers.
- 29:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we've been new.
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: We would not score any goals.
- 29:06SPEAKER_03: We're not scoring goals.
- 29:07SPEAKER_03: Can I just add that Joey while did play soccer?
- 29:10SPEAKER_03: Oh Joey forgot about Joey.
- 29:12SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, true, Joey.
- 29:13SPEAKER_03: Would Joey have played?
- 29:15SPEAKER_03: Where do you reckon Joey played?
- 29:17SPEAKER_03: Let us know if we get it wrong, Joey.
- 29:19SPEAKER_04: I reckon, yeah, Mini.
- 29:20SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 29:21SPEAKER_04: I have no idea, bro.
- 29:22SPEAKER_04: We'll just get him up front.
- 29:24SPEAKER_04: Just get him as a striker because he's played so much before.
- 29:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 29:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 29:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 29:27SPEAKER_03: And then Stoker.
- 29:29SPEAKER_01: Stoker.
- 29:31SPEAKER_01: Are you allowed to be a good one?
- 29:32SPEAKER_03: Are you allowed to do that beers on court on the play software?
- 29:36SPEAKER_03: Surely not, but we can't.
- 29:38SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 29:38SPEAKER_03: He doesn't have to defend, he just has to attack.
- 29:39SPEAKER_03: That's it.
- 29:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: Unpredictable.
- 29:42SPEAKER_03: No harm done.
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 29:43SPEAKER_00: That's a good squad.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: That is a good squad.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: What about your chief strategist?
- 29:46SPEAKER_00: Who would be your coach?
- 29:47SPEAKER_03: Oh, true, the coach.
- 29:49SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's a good one.
- 29:50SPEAKER_03: We did talk about favor cards last night.
- 29:52SPEAKER_03: True.
- 29:52SPEAKER_03: Ben Costin.
- 29:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, true.
- 29:54SPEAKER_03: There's Ben Costin out there.
- 29:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Ben Costin.
- 29:56SPEAKER_03: Ben Costin.
- 29:56SPEAKER_03: Ben Costin.
- 29:58SPEAKER_04: Good call, good call.
- 30:00SPEAKER_04: Head coach.
- 30:00SPEAKER_04: Oh, Nick Mower.
- 30:01SPEAKER_04: Nick Mallet.
- 30:01SPEAKER_04: He loves it.
- 30:03SPEAKER_04: He loves tactics.
