• 0:46
Speaker 4: Welcome, ladies and gentlemen to Let's Talk with Carl Lee
• 0:49
Speaker 4: and my co host today and every every time that
• 0:53
Speaker 4: we're on the show is Hollis Lewis.
• 0:57
Speaker 2: What's up? What's up? And want to make sure that
• 1:00
Speaker 2: I give you. I want to give you a little
• 1:02
  Speaker 2: bit of.
• 1:04
Speaker 4: An introduction too, because I think you've got a different,
• 1:09
Speaker 4: somewhat of a different job.
• 1:10
Speaker 2: Right you are the.
• 1:14
Speaker 4: Project director of the crisis intervention team of community programs.
• 1:20
Speaker 4: Give me a little bit of insight. I know that
• 1:22
Speaker 4: I read that when you send it to me, but
• 1:25
Speaker 4: it includes fire department, police department, all of those kinds.
• 1:29
Speaker 4: Give me a little bit of information about what that
• 1:32
Speaker 4: entails and what your actual role is.
• 1:35
Speaker 2: Well, we work with first responders.
• 1:38
Speaker 5: First responders include law enforcement, firefighters, EMS. In addition, nine
• 1:42
Speaker 5: to one dispatchers, SUD professionals that substance you disorder of
• 1:48
Speaker 5: professional behavior health, mental health professionals, in order to build
• 1:51
Speaker 5: a better response to persons in crisis. Oftentimes, when we
• 1:55
Speaker 5: interact with individuals who are suffering from some sort of
• 1:59
Speaker 5: mental health condition or maybe some substance use disorder induced
• 2:04
Speaker 5: mental health condition, you know, most people aren't trained in
• 2:09
Speaker 5: knowing what to do. So what we do we help
• 2:11
Speaker 5: facilitate those trainings, help build community partnerships. And with that,
• 2:16
Speaker 5: even if you are trained to know what to do
• 2:18
Speaker 5: and how to effectively get these individuals help, you may
• 2:23
Speaker 5: not know your community resources that's right up the street.
• 2:27
Speaker 5: So we helped, you know, connect those community resources and really,
• 2:32
Speaker 5: you know, just trying to stare people from the criminal
• 2:35
Speaker 5: justice system that don't necessarily need to go to the
• 2:37
Speaker 5: prison or jail in order to get them the help
• 2:39
  Speaker 5: that they need.
• 2:41
Speaker 4: And so I guess the last couple of days, you
• 2:44
Speaker 4: guys have been in a state summit. Yeah, what it
• 2:49
Speaker 4: give us a little bit of insight of what took
• 2:51
Speaker 4: place there or what that is.
• 2:54
Speaker 5: Well, this was the second annual West Virginia ci T Summit.
• 2:58
Speaker 5: Basically what we did we had subject matter experts in
• 3:02
  Speaker 5: c I T U, c I T professionals and those
• 3:05
Speaker 5: who have the practical experience you know, been running ci
• 3:08
Speaker 5: T programs in their local community, just to give insight,
• 3:12
  Speaker 5: to give you know, because c I T there's multiple
• 3:15
Speaker 5: like levels, and it's multiple aspects to it. So you know,
• 3:19
Speaker 5: just giving us those there's experts, not I want to
• 3:22
Speaker 5: say opinion, but expert knowledge of different aspects of the
• 3:28
Speaker 5: c I T program to individuals and community members. We had,
• 3:33
Speaker 5: like I said, we had firefighters, ems, law enforcement now
• 3:37
Speaker 5: on one, we had local state and government officially, we
• 3:41
Speaker 5: had federal government there just to you know, learn more
• 3:44
Speaker 5: about it, see how they can set it up, and
• 3:46
Speaker 5: for those who already have c I T programs, you know,
• 3:48
Speaker 5: to expand their knowledge.
• 3:51
Speaker 2: I feel like my co host is that seems very important.
• 3:57

• 4:32
Speaker 4: at Let's Talk with Crawley for any of the updates
• 4:36
Speaker 4: and any anything that you're looking for pertaining to the show.
• 4:41
Speaker 4: So today's show, as everybody's fully aware that it is,
• 4:47
Speaker 4: it is training camp. It is just about everybody probably
• 4:53
Speaker 4: has started by the by this week, whether it's high
• 4:57
Speaker 4: school or anybody, I think most every body has gotten
• 5:01
Speaker 4: into that. And one of the conversations that we want
• 5:04
Speaker 4: to get into today is kind of the perspective of
• 5:09
Speaker 4: what is it like? What is camp like as a
• 5:12
Speaker 4: as a player, as what it's like as as a coach,
• 5:17
Speaker 4: And I think we'll even maybe dive into some of
• 5:20
Speaker 4: the especially on some of the professional levels.
• 5:23
Speaker 2: I think what the what all that entails.
• 5:26
Speaker 4: So I'm going to say this hollist like, I'm going
• 5:30
Speaker 4: to start just with an instant reaction to training camp
• 5:36
Speaker 4: in the NFL. It is and I'm sure it's not
• 5:41
Speaker 4: today because there's been a lot of changes in it.
• 5:44
Speaker 4: But it was a four week dive into a playbook.
• 5:52
Speaker 4: That's huge. There's there's it was. It was physical, not
• 6:00
Speaker 4: just physically you had to be physically fit to get
• 6:04
Speaker 4: through a camp, but also the physicality of those camps
• 6:11
Speaker 4: were obviously way different than they are now. Like you
• 6:15
Speaker 4: you would have scrimmagers, you would do goal line, you
• 6:17
Speaker 4: would do just outright scrimmages. That's like full go. And
• 6:26
Speaker 4: you know, you're talking about some of the best players
• 6:30
Speaker 4: going against each other in practice in whether it be
• 6:35
Speaker 4: individual drills, group drills, team drills, and you know, and
• 6:42
Speaker 4: again that speaks for while there was probably more injuries
• 6:46
Speaker 4: back then than there is now.
• 6:48
Speaker 5: So let me ask you as far as like the
• 6:52
Speaker 5: mental side of it. When you're getting that playbook, when
• 6:55
Speaker 5: you guys are having your you know, individual meetings, your
• 6:59
Speaker 5: team meetings, what does that consist of? Are you just learning, like,
• 7:03
Speaker 5: are you just kind of learning how to playbook? Are
• 7:05
  Speaker 5: you watching film?
• 7:07
Speaker 2: How is that? How are you digesting that playbook?
• 7:12
Speaker 4: Well, the film work comes after, you know, in between
• 7:17
Speaker 4: the practices, and it's of practice and it is about
• 7:22
Speaker 4: you know, like if you do goal line, if you
• 7:25
Speaker 4: do a scrimmage, they're looking to see whether it be footwork,
• 7:32
Speaker 4: whether you're doing what you're supposed to do, all of those.
• 7:36
  Speaker 2: Kinds of things.
• 7:41
Speaker 4: I think the biggest problem for most people coming into
• 7:46
Speaker 4: the NFL to play is not necessarily skill set, because
• 7:52
Speaker 4: they probably got drafted, they probably had a great career
• 7:55
Speaker 4: in college, no matter what level of college that they played,
• 7:58
Speaker 4: they had some success.
• 8:00
  Speaker 2: That's there.
• 8:01
Speaker 4: The hardest part of it is the reality of the playbook.
• 8:05
Speaker 5: So look and to that point because I know, you know,
• 8:08
Speaker 5: when you're talking about defenses of coverages, those are going
• 8:11
Speaker 5: to vary depending on the offensive alignment. You know, maybe
• 8:15
Speaker 5: a play right if they have a special wide receiver, special.
• 8:18
  Speaker 2: Tight end quarterback.
• 8:19
Speaker 5: Obviously, So when you are going into those film sessions,
• 8:23
Speaker 5: particularly in training camp, and you're learning, like I mean,
• 8:28
Speaker 5: is it like you got to learn the verbiage, You
• 8:30
  Speaker 5: got to learn.
• 8:31
Speaker 2: When the role coverage, when to do this, when to
• 8:33
  Speaker 2: do that?
• 8:34
Speaker 4: Yeah, you gotta you gotta know what you're checking out
• 8:37
Speaker 4: of because there's going to be formations that that coverage
• 8:39
Speaker 4: doesn't work with. So you've you've got to learn. So
• 8:43
Speaker 4: you guys are checking, like yah, yeah, yeah, we're checking.
• 8:45
Speaker 4: We're checking, just like the quarterback is is making changes
• 8:49
Speaker 4: in in in the plays we see something that we
• 8:53
Speaker 4: can't play, you know, and you may remember this even
• 8:56
Speaker 4: going back to West Virginia State, when you get a
• 8:59
Speaker 4: trip formation, which is three wide receivers, whether it be
• 9:02
Speaker 4: a tight end or back or whoever, however you make
• 9:05
Speaker 4: those three receivers on one side, usually you can't play
• 9:08
Speaker 4: a cover four, which is a four deep coverage on
• 9:12
Speaker 4: this flood. Yeah, that's because they're flooding your zone. So
• 9:15
Speaker 4: you have to make that check. So that would be
• 9:18
Speaker 4: more than likely it's going to be the strong safety.
• 9:21
Speaker 2: Who's making that check. And again those I mean that
• 9:26
  Speaker 2: kind of information.
• 9:27
Speaker 4: You you don't have a lot of time to learn those,
• 9:31
Speaker 4: those checks, what formations, but it's it's something that you
• 9:36
Speaker 4: do have to you do have to spend a lot
• 9:39
  Speaker 4: of time in.
• 9:40
Speaker 5: So let me ask you this, and this kind of
• 9:42
Speaker 5: maybe a nuanced question, but I know, like offensively right,
• 9:45
Speaker 5: So when we're making check, we have to we have
• 9:48
Speaker 5: to speak our own coded language, if you will, because
• 9:51
Speaker 5: obviously if we say you know, run a sixth route,
• 9:54
Speaker 5: you're gonna know what that is most likely, or we're
• 9:56
Speaker 5: gonna say go here and go there, you'll be able
• 9:58
Speaker 5: to pick it up. So in your verbage part of it,
• 10:01
Speaker 5: when you are making the checks adjustments of the line,
• 10:04
Speaker 5: what what is it? Can you do you remember kind
• 10:07
Speaker 5: of what that verbose would even sound like.
• 10:08
Speaker 4: Like the the the strong safety would would say trips right,
• 10:12
Speaker 4: trips left or whatever, whatever side it's on, and then
• 10:16
Speaker 4: he would give us probably like a red call.
• 10:18
Speaker 2: Red call would be three.
• 10:20
Speaker 4: Okay, So so yeah, so you'd have some color and
• 10:23
Speaker 4: then sometimes you would actually get a name for it.
• 10:28
Speaker 2: You know, we started you start out basically.
• 10:31
Speaker 4: With with color and and and the very first coverage
• 10:34
Speaker 4: that you want to learn is cover three.
• 10:36
Speaker 2: That's your base coverage, that's your three deep coverage. So
• 10:39
  Speaker 2: you're so.
• 10:42
Speaker 4: Any your any check is usually gonna get you back
• 10:44
Speaker 4: to cover three, which is gonna be red. And then
• 10:50
Speaker 4: then there's the the the reality of dual calls, like
• 10:55
Speaker 4: you might you might come out with a they may
• 10:59
Speaker 4: give you a you know, a thirty two, so it's
• 11:03
Speaker 4: three for this or twenty three two for.
• 11:06
Speaker 2: A base coverage that you're gonna play in.
• 11:08
Speaker 4: But if they give you this formation, you want to
• 11:11
Speaker 4: get to three or you want to get to four.
• 11:13
Speaker 4: So those kind of checks are also available to you
• 11:18
Speaker 4: as well once you're in that dual coverage.
• 11:20
Speaker 5: And what's funny about this conversation is that, because I know, like,
• 11:24
Speaker 5: for example, defensive, y'all spend a lot of time trying
• 11:28
Speaker 5: to I ain't gonna say maybe not a lot of time,
• 11:29
Speaker 5: but y'all do spend time trying to interpret our call.
• 11:32
Speaker 5: So if I'm calling something at the line, you'll try
• 11:35
Speaker 5: to pick up on one of my checks. So if
• 11:37
Speaker 5: I say, like if gold is the hot color, you'll
• 11:38
Speaker 5: try to pick up on that. If I, you know,
• 11:40
Speaker 5: thirty two forty three, you'll try to pick up on
• 11:42
Speaker 5: what I'm saying. I don't know we as offensive players
• 11:45
Speaker 5: have ever tried to pick up on what you guys
• 11:46
Speaker 5: are saying back then.
• 11:47
Speaker 4: I think part of the problem is when you I
• 11:51
Speaker 4: think I have an answer and it's not. It's not
• 11:53
Speaker 4: a professional, professional answer, or a coach might be able
• 11:57
Speaker 4: to override this, but to me, I think, for the
• 12:01
Speaker 4: because the quarterback is making the check, no one else
• 12:03
Speaker 4: is making the check, the line will maybe the offensive
• 12:06
Speaker 4: line may be making some checks there, they'll make their check,
• 12:09
Speaker 4: but they're gonna make their checks based on what they see.
• 12:11
Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's only really kind of affects yam. It's not. Yes,
• 12:14
Speaker 2: it doesn't affect anybody else.
• 12:15
Speaker 4: For you, as the quarterback, you're looking around to try
• 12:20
Speaker 4: to see if you're lined up right, if your backs
• 12:24
Speaker 4: are right. You got to check the D line to
• 12:27
Speaker 4: see if it's a run if it's right there.
• 12:31
Speaker 2: So you don't have the time necessarily to.
• 12:33
Speaker 4: Always try to say, well, what what's the coverage that
• 12:38
Speaker 4: they're in right now, unless it's a pre road cover
• 12:42
Speaker 4: three or or what they're justin to or what they're Yeah, yeah,
• 12:46
  Speaker 4: you can't.
• 12:46
Speaker 2: You can't. I think it's more difficult for you. But somebody,
• 12:49
Speaker 2: like the tight end wide receiver running back to somebody
• 12:52
  Speaker 2: ought to.
• 12:52
Speaker 4: Be I think the receivers could do that, and I
• 12:55
Speaker 4: think they do do that, And they may do that
• 12:58
  Speaker 4: because they'll.
• 12:58
Speaker 2: See like somebody bliss and then they'll say hot, hot
• 13:00
  Speaker 2: and different things.
• 13:01
  Speaker 1: See.
• 13:02
Speaker 4: But the tricky thing about Let's say the receiver is
• 13:05
Speaker 4: out there and he sees two high safeties right, which
• 13:07
Speaker 4: mean the safeties are the deepest.
• 13:09
Speaker 2: Two guys, and they got one half of the field.
• 13:10
Speaker 2: They got both of them got both half of the field.
• 13:13
Speaker 4: Well, when the ball snapped, that strong side safety can
• 13:17
Speaker 4: come up and play cover three. So now somebody's got
• 13:22
Speaker 4: to see that guy coming up. That receiver now no
• 13:25
Speaker 4: longer is going to be that person because he can't
• 13:27
Speaker 4: make the technique. Why exactly, So, now that that's where
• 13:32
Speaker 4: the quarterback now has to be the one to see
• 13:38
Speaker 4: what that coverage actually becomes. Even if he doesn't hear
• 13:43
Speaker 4: the check, he's got to figure out. He's got to
• 13:46
Speaker 4: know where that strong safety he's going to be. He's
• 13:49
Speaker 4: got to know where where we're rolling strong side or
• 13:52
Speaker 4: weak side. He's got to figure that out. Yeah, and
• 13:55
Speaker 4: for all your quarterbacks out there, that is your first read.
• 13:57
Speaker 4: Normally you're looking at the safeties to see what they're doing.
• 14:00
Speaker 4: They're gonna dictate coverage, all right. So let's get back
• 14:03
Speaker 4: to the training camp. So walk us through what a
• 14:05
Speaker 4: day looks like. So you arrive at training camp. What
• 14:09
Speaker 4: does a day look like? When does it start? What
• 14:11
Speaker 4: are you kind of going to.
• 14:12
  Speaker 2: You're probably you're waking up.
• 14:16
Speaker 4: You're probably waking up at the at least back in
• 14:18
Speaker 4: the day, we would wake up probably about six o'clock
• 14:21
Speaker 4: where you're staying at First, so we're staying we used
• 14:24
Speaker 4: to stay at Mankato State, which is it's about three
• 14:28
Speaker 4: hours or so from from Minneapolis. So we go way
• 14:33
Speaker 4: out at the Vikings. Now they have their facility in
• 14:37
  Speaker 4: right in.
• 14:38
Speaker 5: And I was going to just say that, like I
• 14:40
Speaker 5: just visited the Vikings the facility. Yes, so I was there.
• 14:44
Speaker 5: They stay at the Omni Hotel right there, and their
• 14:47
Speaker 5: facility is just it's gorgeous.
• 14:49
Speaker 2: It really is. I can't even.
• 14:51
Speaker 4: Imagine, of course I've seen it. I can't even imagine
• 14:54
Speaker 4: having that. You know, again, you're staying in the hotel versus.
• 14:59
Speaker 5: And the hotel's like when it's it's literally walking distance
• 15:02
Speaker 5: from the facility. You have you have about six outdoor fields,
• 15:06
Speaker 5: you have an indoor field. You got a cafeteria where
• 15:10
Speaker 5: you can get three meals a day, so your locker room,
• 15:13
Speaker 5: you got your masseuses and all that other stuff.
• 15:15
  Speaker 2: All that stuff.
• 15:16
Speaker 4: Yes, wow, So we would we would we would get
• 15:20
Speaker 4: up around six o'clock, go to breakfast.
• 15:27
Speaker 2: After you after you do breakfast, you go to it.
• 15:29
Speaker 2: You go to your morning meeting that morning in that
• 15:32
Speaker 2: office or individual. That's that's it. Starts.
• 15:36
Speaker 4: It may start off individual, then it may go it
• 15:40
Speaker 4: may go DB's and and and linebackers and then or
• 15:45
Speaker 4: and then we all come together, as you know, as
• 15:48
Speaker 4: a defensive team and watch yesterday's film or whatever film
• 15:55
  Speaker 4: we have.
• 15:55
Speaker 5: So you might have three meetings before the first practice.
• 15:59
Speaker 4: Yes, yes, yes, yeah you could, yeah, trust me, it's
• 16:03
Speaker 4: it's it's an all day thing.
• 16:05
Speaker 2: Okay, go ahead, go ahead.
• 16:06
Speaker 4: So so then when you when you when you get
• 16:09
Speaker 4: your morning meeting done, now you head to practice, get dressed,
• 16:16
Speaker 4: come out for practice. Practice is over, you go back
• 16:22
Speaker 4: to the locker room, change up, go have lunch, you
• 16:26
  Speaker 4: get it.
• 16:27
Speaker 2: You get a little bit.
• 16:27
  Speaker 4: Of a nap time and then let's let's go. Let's
• 16:30
Speaker 4: walk back to that practice.
• 16:31
  Speaker 2: Now.
• 16:32
Speaker 5: Is that like a defensive practice of offensive practice with
• 16:34
Speaker 5: how how does that work?
• 16:35
Speaker 4: It's it's offense offenses on one side, one field defenses
• 16:39
Speaker 4: on the other side. They're doing your individual work, so
• 16:42
Speaker 4: it's individual work by position.
• 16:46
Speaker 2: Then it could be group work.
• 16:47
Speaker 4: By secondary and you know, coverage with the with the linebackers.
• 16:53
Speaker 4: Then you come together, then you'll break up and what
• 16:56
Speaker 4: what everybody I think everybody knows the term you're you're
• 16:59
Speaker 4: pretty much doing a set on seven with yes it's
• 17:03
Speaker 4: called and and then the D line and O line
• 17:07
Speaker 4: and linebackers. Some of the linebackers will go there and
• 17:10
Speaker 4: they'll they'll switch out and you and and you're basically
• 17:16
Speaker 4: working on your coverages while the while the offense is
• 17:19
Speaker 4: working on their their routes. And and again quarterback is
• 17:24
Speaker 4: getting opportunities now to.
• 17:27
Speaker 2: To to read cover just because.
• 17:30
Speaker 4: And I know, at least back in the day, we
• 17:33
Speaker 4: started off with checks because most of the people should
• 17:38
Speaker 4: know the checks if you've been there a few years.
• 17:41
Speaker 4: The only people who don't know the checks and doesn't
• 17:43
Speaker 4: know really quote the defense or the offense are the
• 17:46
Speaker 4: new guys coming in so starting so so we so yeah,
• 17:50
Speaker 4: we're yeah, yeah, we may. We may. We may run
• 17:52
Speaker 4: cover three and just stay in it, but or cover
• 17:56
Speaker 4: two and we we may, we we're not. We're not
• 17:59
Speaker 4: gonna stay cover three if they give us trips. Usually
• 18:02
Speaker 4: the way they'll do that, the way they'll manage that,
• 18:07
Speaker 4: they won't give us the trips. They'll give us everything else,
• 18:10
Speaker 4: but they won't give us a trip to have to
• 18:12
Speaker 4: necessarily make that cut, that that check. But if they did,
• 18:16
Speaker 4: we would already have to know that anyway, So the burden.
• 18:20
Speaker 2: Really is on you as the as the new guy, to.
• 18:24
Speaker 4: Learn the offense, to learn the defense, because and that's
• 18:28
  Speaker 4: through the playbook.
• 18:29
  Speaker 2: That's through that's.
• 18:29
Speaker 4: Through the playbook and playbook meetings and on the field.
• 18:34
Speaker 2: Okay, you got you at some point. And I'm gonna say,
• 18:38
Speaker 2: for me, what the easiest way for me to learn
• 18:44
Speaker 2: it was really on the field.
• 18:47
Speaker 4: And again, corners not very difficult to have to learn,
• 18:51
Speaker 4: you know, it's it's safety line bockers.
• 18:55
  Speaker 2: That's a different deal. That's a whole different deal man
• 18:57
Speaker 2: partic more running based off Yes, linebackers.
• 19:00
Speaker 4: Probably, yes, because and they've got they've got coverage and
• 19:05
Speaker 4: they also have run responsibility. And then when you're blitzing,
• 19:09
Speaker 4: they're in that and they gotta they gotta get you
• 19:12
Speaker 4: in and out of those blitzers. So the linebackers are
• 19:18
Speaker 4: they have a lot.
• 19:19
Speaker 2: To do, all right.
• 19:20
Speaker 5: So okay, so you you you have your practice, then
• 19:24
Speaker 5: you're done with practice.
• 19:25
Speaker 2: What happens and he said, no, so we get a nap.
• 19:27
Speaker 4: Then after after the nap, we come back for two
• 19:30
Speaker 4: days because that was we had too a days back then.
• 19:32
Speaker 4: So now you come back practice again pretty much same
• 19:37
  Speaker 4: same style.
• 19:38
  Speaker 2: Of practice.
• 19:39
Speaker 4: Typically, now you're gonna have in that evening practice, you're
• 19:41
Speaker 4: gonna have a place where you're gonna do a special teams.
• 19:47
Speaker 2: An introduction to the special teams.
• 19:49
Speaker 4: Might be punt team, punk return, field goal, field goal block, kickoff,
• 19:53
  Speaker 4: kickoff return.
• 19:54
Speaker 2: It'll be one of one of those.
• 19:56
Speaker 4: They already have some people designed to put in that,
• 19:59
Speaker 4: but they're have other folks that will also run down
• 20:02
Speaker 4: on kickoff, rundown on punts. You know, as you're on
• 20:05
Speaker 4: the outside, guys, you're considered the gunners. Most of those
• 20:08
Speaker 4: are going to be your DB's. So then once you
• 20:14
Speaker 4: once you finished that evening, that second practice, now back
• 20:18
  Speaker 4: in shower.
• 20:20
Speaker 2: Now you're going to dinner. You come from dinner.
• 20:24
Speaker 4: Now you got to follow up meeting and by the
• 20:28
  Speaker 4: time you get.
• 20:29
Speaker 5: And then as far as you guys, like far as
• 20:31
Speaker 5: you're eating now, because I believe you said you staying
• 20:34
Speaker 5: at a college campus.
• 20:35
Speaker 2: So did y'all just see that at the calf? How
• 20:36
Speaker 2: did that work? Yes, we had we we we we
• 20:39
Speaker 2: ate at the calf.
• 20:40
Speaker 4: But they had certain they brought in the food also
• 20:44
Speaker 4: it's ca yeah, it's well, they may have cooked it,
• 20:48
Speaker 4: but it wasn't like it wasn't. It wasn't like school food. Okay,
• 20:52
Speaker 4: if that makes sense, you know what I'm saying. I
• 20:53
Speaker 4: was it was it back in the day.
• 20:55
Speaker 5: Was a situation in which they're trying like because I know,
• 20:58
Speaker 5: for example, they may the lineman to get a little
• 21:01
Speaker 5: bit more beefier. They may want a linebacker or running
• 21:03
Speaker 5: back to slim down. Was it a situation when you
• 21:06
Speaker 5: guys are working with dietitians to try to you know, feed.
• 21:10
  Speaker 4: That wasn't that really wasn't. That wasn't a thing then
• 21:14
Speaker 4: with a dietitian. But yes, there were tons of guys
• 21:19
Speaker 4: because you have to weigh in the morning and then
• 21:24
Speaker 4: you weigh again at the end of practice. So in
• 21:27
Speaker 4: the first practice in the morning, in the second practice
• 21:29
Speaker 4: in the evening, you weigh. Okay, So I should have
• 21:33
Speaker 4: put that in there now the guys who are overweight,
• 21:36
Speaker 4: and there would be there's gonna be four or five
• 21:38
Speaker 4: of those guys, you know, always always of lineman running
• 21:44
Speaker 4: back or to running back maybe co so you they
• 21:51
Speaker 4: would not give you, I mean like you had to
• 21:54
Speaker 4: be watching your food and and Bud would literally because
• 21:59
Speaker 4: you're getting fine if you're overweight, okay, you know, so
• 22:02
  Speaker 4: there there.
• 22:03
Speaker 2: So back in the day, there was fines if you
• 22:05
  Speaker 2: were overweight.
• 22:05
Speaker 5: Now now is that weight based on your position or
• 22:08
Speaker 5: just based on you personally where they want you to.
• 22:10
Speaker 4: Where they want you to be, So you don't get
• 22:13
Speaker 4: you you don't necessarily get to pick that.
• 22:16
Speaker 2: My roommate was six five sixty six and he.
• 22:22
Speaker 4: Was probably one of the first three hundred pounders.
• 22:26
  Speaker 2: That he did.
• 22:27
Speaker 4: He play, he played he plaid offensive tackle, and they
• 22:34
Speaker 4: would constantly get him to that he'd always have to
• 22:38
Speaker 4: lose weight. He'd always be ten fifteen above. And because no,
• 22:43
Speaker 4: because three hundred was like a was not was a
• 22:45
Speaker 4: bad number back then, Like nobody wanted that guy. They
• 22:49
Speaker 4: thought you couldn't you couldn't move, and he was, I
• 22:51
Speaker 4: mean he was the most athletic and the fastest lineman
• 22:54
  Speaker 4: we had.
• 22:54
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's probably wrong. Yeah, it was totally wrong. It
• 22:58
  Speaker 2: was totally wrong.
• 22:59
  Speaker 3: And so.
• 23:01
Speaker 4: After after, you know, we get about a forty five
• 23:04
Speaker 4: minute break at the end of the day, so we'd
• 23:06
Speaker 4: go to this, you know, we go to a little
• 23:08
Speaker 4: club and hang out and you know, do whatever you do,
• 23:11
Speaker 4: and then we'd stop by, you know, hearties, which is
• 23:18
Speaker 4: one of the reasons why I don't like hardiest because
• 23:21
Speaker 4: that's all you had.
• 23:23
  Speaker 2: And so.
• 23:25
Speaker 4: I would get something to eat. And if I didn't
• 23:30
Speaker 4: bring him something something to eat, he would take mine
• 23:33
Speaker 4: like or he would.
• 23:34
Speaker 2: Take of it. And I mean, you know, like what
• 23:36
  Speaker 2: am I doing?
• 23:37
  Speaker 4: Like what I ain't got There's no way I could
• 23:39
Speaker 4: defend myself against him and he and he's thinking it's funny.
• 23:44
Speaker 4: We were joking with it because like sometimes I would
• 23:47
Speaker 4: purposely not get it and and he'd be like, so
• 23:51
Speaker 4: I come in and he'd be laying, he'd be laying
• 23:54
Speaker 4: in his bed. I go over, sit my bag down,
• 23:59
Speaker 4: square up, start start eating, and he'll get up and
• 24:03
Speaker 4: he'll like have his hand like he's pinching, like like
• 24:05
Speaker 4: he gonna take half of that burden. And I'm like,
• 24:09
Speaker 4: and I called him big boy. I said, big boy, No,
• 24:11
Speaker 4: you you ain't getting none of this because you got
• 24:12
Speaker 4: to you gotta get your weight down. And he would
• 24:15
Speaker 4: call me big boy. He said, big boy, I'm gonna
• 24:20
Speaker 4: get some of that one wait for him, and so
• 24:24
Speaker 4: he would he would physically take it.
• 24:27
Speaker 2: He would physically just.
• 24:29
Speaker 4: Grab it so every daw and then I would bring
• 24:32
Speaker 4: it to him, but I you know, and even bringing
• 24:34
Speaker 4: it by him one and I never bought him fries,
• 24:38
Speaker 4: So he would steal some of my fries, but I
• 24:41
Speaker 4: would never buy him fries because I knew that was
• 24:44
  Speaker 4: that was really.
• 24:44
Speaker 2: No good to get him.
• 24:45
Speaker 5: I don't know if they had salads back in the day,
• 24:48
Speaker 5: have no found So some of me ask you just
• 24:50
Speaker 5: kind of to that point, uh, I know, And we'll
• 24:53
Speaker 5: talk about this in the second. When you were a
• 24:55
Speaker 5: coach of state West Virginia State University, like we had
• 24:58
Speaker 5: to run and tests. So was that something that you
• 25:01
Speaker 5: guys had in the pros that you have, like any
• 25:03
Speaker 5: sort of physical tests that you had to achieve in
• 25:07
Speaker 5: order to even participate in brands?
• 25:09
Speaker 4: But but Grant he he would his idea of being
• 25:14
Speaker 4: in shape was was gassers, you know, which is again
• 25:18
Speaker 4: that's an old school run, that's what we were in. Yeah,
• 25:22
Speaker 4: so he would make you run the gassers and you'd
• 25:25
Speaker 4: have to be able to run so many in a
• 25:27
Speaker 4: certain amount of time, and if you couldn't, then you know,
• 25:32
  Speaker 4: you know.
• 25:32
Speaker 2: Again his idea was fining and all those kinds of things.
• 25:37
Speaker 4: As as we went on, Let's Stecho created an actual
• 25:42
Speaker 4: running test and it was it was extremely difficult and
• 25:51
Speaker 4: a lot of players, like you know, like what did
• 25:55
Speaker 4: they call it, Like was it the Iron Man Contest
• 25:57
Speaker 4: or something like that. It was something something like that
• 25:59
Speaker 4: to insinuate like whoever the best person was actually Darren Nelson.
• 26:04
Speaker 4: Darren Nelson won it out of Stanford. He was our
• 26:08
Speaker 4: running back. But the conditioning, the conditioning piece of it.
• 26:17
  Speaker 2: Was really really.
• 26:20
Speaker 4: Impactful because you had to do a whole bunch to
• 26:25
Speaker 4: get there because Bud's idea was you you should be
• 26:28
Speaker 4: in shape when you get here, and so if you
• 26:31
Speaker 4: weren't in shape when you got there, it was gonna
• 26:33
Speaker 4: show up, you know.
• 26:35
Speaker 2: And then when burnsy d gosh I called him, call
• 26:40
Speaker 2: him Burnsley so much, Jerry.
• 26:41
Speaker 4: Burns He kind of took a little bit of less
• 26:46
Speaker 4: DECLs and a little bit of Buds to to to
• 26:50
Speaker 4: create a running test, so you could you'd have to
• 26:53
Speaker 4: do so many of this and so many of that
• 26:56
Speaker 4: to be able to do it. And then we would
• 26:57
Speaker 4: run sometimes we would run some forties and some stuff
• 27:00
Speaker 4: like that, just as for speed stuff. But it was
• 27:04
Speaker 4: really old school, you know, like walking walking anywhere on
• 27:10
Speaker 4: the field, like you coming out of it.
• 27:13
Speaker 2: Let's say you come in for me. Let's say you.
• 27:18
Speaker 4: You not even thinking about the possibility of walking on
• 27:21
Speaker 4: and saying, hey, Carl, I got you. I'm not even
• 27:23
Speaker 4: thinking about not running off the field. And again, Bud
• 27:29
Speaker 4: was not a bench guy, you know, so like you
• 27:31
Speaker 4: didn't you could won. You could never leave your helmet.
• 27:34
Speaker 4: You could never sit your helmet down. You could never
• 27:36
Speaker 4: leave it. You can never sit on it. You you
• 27:39
Speaker 4: remember a whole lot of that because that made sense
• 27:42
Speaker 4: to me, Like the helmet's the most important thing, so
• 27:45
Speaker 4: no one could ever put their helmet down and walk
• 27:49
  Speaker 4: away from it.
• 27:50
Speaker 2: You always had to have it in your hand.
• 27:52
Speaker 4: Yeah, and I and again I created that for State
• 27:54
Speaker 4: because I thought I thought it was I thought it
• 27:56
Speaker 4: was a great idea.
• 27:58
Speaker 5: Okay, so kind of not necessarily to that point. But
• 28:02
Speaker 5: like again, when you're entering camp at the professional level, again,
• 28:07
Speaker 5: I think even back in the day, the roster was
• 28:09
Speaker 5: comprised of fifty two to fifty three guys, right, So
• 28:12
Speaker 5: in addition to those guys who are veterans, those guys
• 28:15
Speaker 5: who are drafted, you also have a litany of free
• 28:18
Speaker 5: agents that are part of this training camp. So generally,
• 28:23
Speaker 5: again and we're talking about guys fighting for the professional
• 28:26
Speaker 5: lives in a sport where there is and particularly at
• 28:29
Speaker 5: that time, there is no necessarily no second you know,
• 28:33
Speaker 5: there's no to fail. There's no other opportunities, and if
• 28:36
Speaker 5: there are, they're not opportunities to really make a livable
• 28:39
Speaker 5: wage even to even today. I mean, you have the
• 28:41
Speaker 5: US the USF or UFL, and that's pretty good. But
• 28:45
Speaker 5: again it's just that one. You have Canada and that's
• 28:48
Speaker 5: kind of and you're starting to have to sprout some
• 28:49
Speaker 5: league leagues overseas. So how was the competition level at practice,
• 28:55
Speaker 5: considering like this is the shot.
• 28:58
Speaker 4: It was it's me and you being friends, but me
• 29:01
Speaker 4: and you both playing either cornerback or or quarterback. Okay,
• 29:07
Speaker 4: we know that because if they if they drafted a quarterback,
• 29:12
Speaker 4: he's staying. Yeah, you already know that he's staying because
• 29:16
Speaker 4: he's probably high one, two, three, four, Maybe he's staying.
• 29:21
Speaker 4: So he's going to be the backup. So one of
• 29:25
Speaker 4: us has got to go. And I was in that
• 29:27
Speaker 4: situation with the gentleman by the name of John Swain,
• 29:29
Speaker 4: who was a corner and they brought in a guy
• 29:31
Speaker 4: by the name of Mike Holt who had already covered
• 29:34
Speaker 4: Jerry Rice in college and shut him down. So there
• 29:37
Speaker 4: was no question he was going to be there. So
• 29:41
Speaker 4: the competition was really between me and him because one
• 29:44
Speaker 4: of us was going to have to start, and you
• 29:48
Speaker 4: know it, you know who your competition is.
• 29:53
Speaker 2: It just depends. But you try to stay friendly with it.
• 29:57
Speaker 4: Now, me and Swain didn't stay necessarily didn't stay all
• 30:00
Speaker 4: the time friendly with it, because he wasn't really like.
• 30:04
Speaker 2: We weren't the best of friends.
• 30:05
Speaker 4: You know, we were okay, but we didn't necessarily get
• 30:09
Speaker 4: we weren't hanging out together. And so it was so
• 30:12
Speaker 4: to me that made it even better for me because
• 30:15
Speaker 4: I had no problem in trying to get it, trying
• 30:19
Speaker 4: to get that position. You know, and I think most
• 30:22
Speaker 4: players and if you think about it in your own mindset, you.
• 30:28
Speaker 2: You may, you may, you may like me, but only
• 30:32
Speaker 2: one of us is gonna make it. Yeah, you may
• 30:36
Speaker 2: stay cool with me.
• 30:37
Speaker 4: But on the other side of it, every time I
• 30:39
Speaker 4: make a play, you're thinking about it.
• 30:40
Speaker 2: I need to make two.
• 30:42
Speaker 5: I mean, in this situation, not only is it about
• 30:45
Speaker 5: just making the team or even starting, but you're talking
• 30:47
Speaker 5: about like a living You're talking about God.
• 30:49
Speaker 4: Yes, yes, because again, like you said, back in those days,
• 30:52
Speaker 4: you didn't have you didn't have.
• 30:54
Speaker 2: The only place you had to go back then was Canada. Canada.
• 30:57
Speaker 5: Yeah, and and you only get a limited number of marriages,
• 30:59
Speaker 5: exactly exactly so, and that's not where if you played
• 31:03
Speaker 5: in the league, that's the last place you want to
• 31:04
Speaker 5: go now is Canada.
• 31:05
Speaker 2: If you started there and came back, that's another story.
• 31:09
Speaker 2: But you ain't. You don't want to leave the league,
• 31:12
Speaker 2: and and and and.
• 31:13
Speaker 4: I think it's even worse if if you got a
• 31:15
Speaker 4: little bit of playtime and you think that you could play,
• 31:20
Speaker 4: and you get cut, you're hoping, if anything, you're hoping
• 31:23
Speaker 4: to get picked up by somebody else, you know, compared
• 31:28
Speaker 4: to getting stuck and being forced maybe like not to
• 31:31
  Speaker 4: play at all.
• 31:32
Speaker 5: So let me ask you that like far As, like
• 31:35
Speaker 5: you know, because you're you played in Minnesota, Minnesota is
• 31:38
Speaker 5: right there far as next to Canada. Was there ever,
• 31:42
Speaker 5: like any sort of relationship with those players up there.
• 31:45
Speaker 5: Did they ever come down try to like watch the
• 31:47
  Speaker 5: games or just.
• 31:48
Speaker 4: I think I think that we I think we had
• 31:50
  Speaker 4: a couple of guys I don't remember their names. I
• 31:52
Speaker 4: think we had a couple of guys that had come down.
• 31:57
Speaker 4: I want to say, Neil Google most might have been
• 32:01
Speaker 4: one of those one of those players. But I'm not
• 32:03
Speaker 4: one hundred percent short because I know he I'm I'm not.
• 32:07
Speaker 2: Sure, but it was.
• 32:09
Speaker 4: It didn't make it any easier or it wasn't any
• 32:12
Speaker 4: more acceptable to to to go or to come. It's
• 32:16
Speaker 4: better for to come down if you're in, if you're
• 32:19
Speaker 4: there and you're getting a chance to play in the league.

Speaker 2: All right, so us.
• 34:02
Speaker 4: You know, in the lining of those in the in
• 34:05
Speaker 4: line of those questions. One of the interesting things that
• 34:08
  Speaker 4: I think about when I when I when I answer
• 34:12
Speaker 4: questions like that, is the the seriousness of practice. Yeah,
• 34:22
Speaker 4: and the the relevance of how important every play that
• 34:29
Speaker 4: you try to make or make or don't make, how
• 34:34
Speaker 4: that plays against you or for you, how relevant that.
• 34:41
  Speaker 2: You know.
• 34:41
Speaker 4: I think kids think like when they you know, oh
• 34:43
Speaker 4: my bad, Like that's not you know that, that's not
• 34:49
Speaker 4: a term you know in camp? Yeah, because you you
• 34:53
Speaker 4: you mess you mess up, You do something that's kind
• 34:57
Speaker 4: of unexpected, something that you shouldn't do. You you blow coverages,
• 35:03
Speaker 4: you blow blitzes. You know, you go to the wrong gap.
• 35:07
Speaker 4: You drop balls that are that hit you right in
• 35:10
Speaker 4: the hand. Those are way bigger than my bad.
• 35:16
Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, because like I said, not only are
• 35:17
Speaker 5: you maybe affecting other players, you're affecting yourself as well.
• 35:20
Speaker 2: Absolutely, your ability to be on this team.
• 35:23
Speaker 4: We can, we can, we trust you because if you
• 35:26
Speaker 4: drop a if you drop a ball that's wide open
• 35:28
Speaker 4: and everybody, and you've heard this before, anybody can do that.
• 35:32
Speaker 2: Don't worry about it.
• 35:33
Speaker 4: Yeah, you need to worry about it. When you start
• 35:38
Speaker 4: talking about you want to get to the next level.
• 35:41
Speaker 4: You drop two balls that are thrown right to you.
• 35:44
Speaker 4: They're already looking to see if there's somebody else. You know,
• 35:47
Speaker 4: how many did you catch? And if you caught all yours,
• 35:51
Speaker 4: I got in isiit. Yeah, because now they're looking where
• 35:54
Speaker 4: at you and thinking, you know, and again, unless you're
• 35:58
Speaker 4: way in the top of the draft and you're in
• 36:03
  Speaker 4: you don't have a lot of you don't have a
• 36:04
  Speaker 4: lot of.
• 36:05
Speaker 2: Room for era, room for air.
• 36:06
Speaker 5: Yeah, that's and that's and that creates you know, that
• 36:08
Speaker 5: can create a lot of just pressure.
• 36:10
Speaker 2: Yes, So let me ask you and I know that.
• 36:13
Speaker 5: Like, for example, this week, there've been a lot of
• 36:15
Speaker 5: discussions about Aaron Rodgers playing preseason games, and there's been
• 36:20
Speaker 5: a lot of discussion in general about the preseason games,
• 36:24
Speaker 5: whether they're going to allard to two, move it up
• 36:26
  Speaker 5: the regular season.
• 36:27
Speaker 2: Eighteen blah blah blah.
• 36:29
Speaker 5: So when you were in the league and everything like that,
• 36:33
Speaker 5: how important were those preseason games?
• 36:37
Speaker 4: They were critical for me early on trying to make
• 36:41
Speaker 4: the team. When you when you get that opportunity to
• 36:45
Speaker 4: get on the field and imagine running on the field
• 36:49
Speaker 4: as a rookie, I don't care what draft pick you are,
• 36:54
Speaker 4: but I was again.
• 36:55
Speaker 2: I was right in the middle.
• 36:57
Speaker 4: I'm running on the field for the first time with
• 37:00
Speaker 4: the Viking uniform on against whatever team, and I'm getting
• 37:04
  Speaker 4: ready to play.
• 37:07
  Speaker 2: It's the it's it's the it's the it's the it's
• 37:10
Speaker 2: the ultimate dream come true.
• 37:14
Speaker 4: But what you don't realize is the skill set and
• 37:18
Speaker 4: the speed of the game.
• 37:20
Speaker 5: Did did practice in training camp adequately prepare you for that?
• 37:25
  Speaker 2: Yes?
• 37:26
Speaker 4: And no, you know, I got the luxury to go
• 37:28
Speaker 4: against Anthony carter Ac from Michigan, you know constantly. So
• 37:36
Speaker 4: at least I saw somebody who was who was great.
• 37:39
Speaker 4: I went against somebody.
• 37:40
  Speaker 2: Who was great.
• 37:44
Speaker 4: But when you're in the game, even a preseason game,
• 37:48
Speaker 4: and you're you're against somebody you don't know, or what
• 37:51
Speaker 4: happens when you go out with the starter and you're
• 37:53
Speaker 4: looking at Sterling Shark and you you well, he was
• 37:59
Speaker 4: behind me, but and you don't know you know his history,
• 38:03
Speaker 4: you know, or Jerry Rice, You're you're standing out there
• 38:06
Speaker 4: against him and you're and you're and you making the team.
• 38:11
Speaker 2: Maybe all about how you handle that.
• 38:15
Speaker 4: Yeah, there is no starstruck because if you get if
• 38:20
  Speaker 4: you if you're a starstruck and you're and you're paying
• 38:22
Speaker 4: attention to who you got, you got a.
• 38:26
Speaker 2: Problem, that's a good that's important nuance, you know.
• 38:29
Speaker 4: I mean, you can't you know, you have to go
• 38:32
Speaker 4: out and play as hard as you can and just
• 38:37
Speaker 4: play and and and you you need to make it
• 38:39
Speaker 4: like it was youth football. You know, you can't you
• 38:42
Speaker 4: can't say, Man, I'm in the NFL. I'm running on
• 38:45
Speaker 4: the field and I'm thinking, man, this is my first time.
• 38:48
Speaker 4: Imagine the first time you're running on a game field
• 38:51
Speaker 4: in a game situation, and you're in the NFL, and
• 38:57
Speaker 4: you were running out there, and and lo and behold,
• 39:00
Speaker 4: you got a Hall of Fame receiver that that's across
• 39:03
Speaker 4: from you, that you you might have grown up with.
• 39:08
Speaker 4: You know, you may have seen him when he you know,
• 39:11
Speaker 4: Sammy White was there and and and Sammy White was
• 39:15
Speaker 4: a great Viking receiver, a great NFL receiver. And I
• 39:22
Speaker 4: knew who he was from as a kid. I knew
• 39:25
Speaker 4: who he was. He ran and his best route was
• 39:28
Speaker 4: a post corner, and he run he ran a post
• 39:31
Speaker 4: corner on me year three, maybe because I think it
• 39:38
Speaker 4: was like right at his last season and Hollis, I'm
• 39:42
Speaker 4: still running to the post. I'm still running to the
• 39:45
Speaker 4: he killed me. I mean for me to have made
• 39:49
Speaker 4: a turn back to the get to the corner. I'm
• 39:52
Speaker 4: tearing my knee, ankle, everything out. That's how bad it was.
• 39:57
Speaker 4: Luckily it wasn't year one, but you know it was.
• 40:03
Speaker 4: It's crazy because when you think about playing that's your goal,
• 40:12
Speaker 4: and when you get there, you just don't understand.
• 40:15
Speaker 2: You know, Tommy Kramer is the quarterback, you know, and
• 40:21
Speaker 2: you're thinking, man, I remember, I remember him, you.
• 40:24
Speaker 4: Know, and you're trying, You're trying not to You're like, Okay,
• 40:28
Speaker 4: that's Tommy Kramer. Okay, So you know I'm caraling. You know,
• 40:32
Speaker 4: you have to find a way to get there because
• 40:35
Speaker 4: if you don't, you're gonna struggle.
• 40:38
Speaker 2: So let me ask you this. Okay.
• 40:39
Speaker 5: So I think kind of what we are, what you've
• 40:42
Speaker 5: articulated is maybe from a younger player standpoint.
• 40:46
Speaker 2: Going through camping, different things like that nature.
• 40:48
Speaker 5: So when you're in let's say years ten, year eleven,
• 40:52
Speaker 5: you're maybe New Orleans, how is that training camp experience,
• 40:57
Speaker 5: It's just like, oh God, let's get this other with absolutely.
• 41:00
Speaker 2: When I when I got to when I got.
• 41:02
Speaker 4: To New Orleans, I was released from the Vikings and
• 41:06
Speaker 4: I got to New Orleans, I couldn't even like camp
• 41:13
Speaker 4: was like I already know camp. I already know what
• 41:16
Speaker 4: this is gonna be. Now I don't know how much
• 41:18
Speaker 4: we're gonna run. It's a different coach and blah blah
• 41:20
Speaker 4: blah blah. I got a new position. Coach, I got
• 41:22
Speaker 4: a new coordinator, got a new head coach. I got
• 41:26
Speaker 4: all these guys that I don't know. I may have
• 41:29
  Speaker 4: heard their name.
• 41:30
Speaker 5: But and you can argue that you've probably experienced that
• 41:32
Speaker 5: before when you were at the Vikings.
• 41:33
Speaker 2: You have multiple coaches and this, yes, I had, I
• 41:36
Speaker 2: had changed coaches. I had I had, so.
• 41:39
Speaker 5: Even that wasn't necessarily new. That wasn't necessarily new. You're
• 41:42
Speaker 5: just in the New Orleans heating now.
• 41:44
Speaker 4: But I'm in the New Orleans heat and and you know,
• 41:49
Speaker 4: and I'm thinking to myself, like, okay, I'm not coming
• 41:52
Speaker 4: here and not playing. So now I'm I'm I'm picking, like, Okay,
• 41:57
Speaker 4: I gotta get his I gotta get I gotta get
• 41:59
  Speaker 4: that corners job.
• 42:00
Speaker 2: And I'm hoping that they didn't.
• 42:02
Speaker 4: They didn't pick me, get me off with waivers and
• 42:06
Speaker 4: and think that I'm want to be a backup, you know,
• 42:10
Speaker 4: because I had I was guaranteed to have that season.
• 42:13
Speaker 4: So that was the that was one of the deals
• 42:15
Speaker 4: that I got cut that I wanted to be. You know,
• 42:18
Speaker 4: I didn't want to come to a place that you
• 42:20
Speaker 4: were going to turn around, try to play, see if
• 42:24
Speaker 4: I fit, see if I can still play, and then
• 42:26
Speaker 4: you're gonna cut me. So you either had to bring
• 42:28
Speaker 4: me in and keep me for the year, or I'm
• 42:33
Speaker 4: not coming. And I even turned Pete Pete Carroll down
• 42:37
Speaker 4: in San Francisco because he because he couldn't give it
• 42:40
Speaker 4: to me. He couldn't give it to me. And and
• 42:42
Speaker 4: he already had that's ninety four, That's that's super Bowl.
• 42:46
  Speaker 2: That's ninety four.
• 42:48
Speaker 4: And I was like, I'm not you know, I'm not
• 42:51
Speaker 4: going there to get cut. You know, they had some
• 42:52
Speaker 4: young guys that were that were that were pretty good.
• 42:55
Speaker 4: And I'm thinking to myself, Okay, you know, I'm not
• 42:59
Speaker 4: questioning whether or not I can beat him out. I
• 43:01
Speaker 4: don't think Pete wants me for that. I think he
• 43:03
Speaker 4: wants me for nickel and dime. You know, which is
• 43:05
Speaker 4: the extra you know, when you go to five dbs
• 43:07
Speaker 4: or six dbs, it's dime and five.
• 43:10
Speaker 2: You know, his nickels.
• 43:11
Speaker 4: So I'm like thinking, he's trying to put me because
• 43:15
Speaker 4: I could play in the middle.
• 43:16
Speaker 2: That's where I played with him. I played inside, So
• 43:19
Speaker 2: he kind of wanted you as a specialist.
• 43:20
Speaker 4: Yeah, every day, and and I'm gonna be sitting there
• 43:23
Speaker 4: for the rest of the game.
• 43:25
  Speaker 2: And I'm like, no, I don't think you know. I
• 43:28
  Speaker 2: don't want to.
• 43:28
Speaker 5: Look at that, like, well maybe if he if he
• 43:31
Speaker 5: has me here and I'm specialists, I'm not playing every dawn.
• 43:34
Speaker 5: Maybe the career lasts for maybe two, three, four, maybe
• 43:37
  Speaker 5: five more years.
• 43:39
Speaker 4: No, I didn't think no, no, because I knew.
• 43:43
  Speaker 2: I knew. Well, I won't say that I knew, but
• 43:48
  Speaker 2: I knew.
• 43:48
Speaker 4: I knew I was at the end because I had
• 43:50
Speaker 4: had I had had a lot of years in and
• 43:52
Speaker 4: I played and literally my entire career with the Vikers,
• 43:57
Speaker 4: I was on the field, and yeah, you didn't have
• 44:02
Speaker 4: I didn't have a year where I played like part time,
• 44:04
Speaker 4: you know. I played full time my entire career there.
• 44:08
  Speaker 4: And I just I just I wasn't willing to and
• 44:13
  Speaker 4: I didn't want to sit, and I didn't want to
• 44:16
Speaker 4: and and again I got when I and I think
• 44:18
  Speaker 4: I've told you this, and I don't know if I've
• 44:19
Speaker 4: said it on air, but when I was playing for
• 44:23
Speaker 4: the Saints and we were we were in the game,
• 44:25
Speaker 4: and again I think it might have been Denver, but
• 44:30
  Speaker 4: a guy ran a crow route. I knew Hollis. I
• 44:32
Speaker 4: knew it like the receiver knew it. I knew it,
• 44:36
Speaker 4: like the quarterback knew it. And I'm thinking, oh, this
• 44:39
Speaker 4: is gonna be my first pick. And if I get
• 44:41
Speaker 4: if I get in on the curl, that's that's the
• 44:43
Speaker 4: chance that's a pick sick. So this is this, this
• 44:47
Speaker 4: is getting ready to be this big play. And man,
• 44:52
  Speaker 4: I next thing I realized, I'm lying. I'm laying down
• 44:54
Speaker 4: on the ground where I had tackled him and didn't
• 44:57
Speaker 4: even touch the ball.
• 44:59
Speaker 2: And I said to my myself, Oh, something's wrong.
• 45:03
Speaker 4: I knew because and I knew, and you know that's
• 45:06
Speaker 4: something that you you know, nobody else knows. That's like, Okay,
• 45:09
Speaker 4: they threw a curl, he made a tackle. No big
• 45:11
Speaker 4: deal for me. I knew it from the snap and
• 45:15
  Speaker 4: I couldn't get there. And it's not like I swipt,
• 45:19
Speaker 4: It's not like anything any any anything that I could
• 45:23
Speaker 4: have come up with to make it an excuse would
• 45:26
  Speaker 4: not fit.
• 45:28
Speaker 2: And I was like, I'm done.
• 45:30
Speaker 5: So so let me ask you. You's going back to the
• 45:32
Speaker 5: training camp. Just how that led last year, maybe the
• 45:35
Speaker 5: last two years. How was the training camp experienced different?
• 45:38
Speaker 5: Was it just like how was it?
• 45:40
  Speaker 2: It was?
• 45:41
Speaker 4: It was being with the Saints and and they had
• 45:44
Speaker 4: a bunch of young guys and even their coach.
• 45:49
Speaker 2: Jim Jim Jim Moore junior.
• 45:53
Speaker 4: He was it was his first year coaching DB's for
• 45:55
Speaker 4: his dad, so he was just getting started.
• 45:59
Speaker 2: And so I'm older than him, you know what I'm saying.
• 46:03
Speaker 2: And I don't believe he wasn't an NFL guy. No, no,
• 46:06
  Speaker 2: not at all.
• 46:07
Speaker 4: And so so Dad was bringing him on and trying
• 46:11
Speaker 4: to get him adjusted, and like he would, you know,
• 46:13
Speaker 4: and and I don't mind this, but he'd be like.
• 46:16
Speaker 2: Did I say that right?
• 46:17
  Speaker 4: You know?
• 46:18
Speaker 2: Is that? You know?
• 46:19
Speaker 4: Because he's thinking, like I'm this veteran, he's kind of
• 46:23
Speaker 4: leaning on me, and I'm like, no, I'm not used
• 46:27
Speaker 4: to that. You the coach tell me what to do?
• 46:30
Speaker 4: You know, I don't want, you know. And it wasn't
• 46:32
Speaker 4: like I didn't want to help him. It was like
• 46:34
Speaker 4: I was confused with it because I had never I
• 46:37
Speaker 4: had never experienced this situation. I wasn't happy about it anyway.
• 46:42
Speaker 4: Like I said, I wondered I was gonna that was
• 46:44
Speaker 4: gonna be my last year with the Vikings. That's the
• 46:46
Speaker 4: year I went to the Saints. That was going to
• 46:48
Speaker 4: be my last year. I was going to retire after that.
• 46:50
Speaker 2: Because I remember telling me you want to retire.
• 46:51
Speaker 4: I wanted to retire as a viking, and so you know,
• 46:55
Speaker 4: everything about everything about that situation was was really like no,
• 47:02
  Speaker 4: no good for me. I wasn't I wasn't happy. I
• 47:06
Speaker 4: was It's like doing something that you really don't want
• 47:10
Speaker 4: to do and you got to do it at a
• 47:12
Speaker 4: high level. I'm trying to I'm trying to convince myself
• 47:16
Speaker 4: to you know, every game, to play hard. And you know,
• 47:20
  Speaker 4: I had a little, I had a little had a
• 47:23
Speaker 4: strained a hip flexer.
• 47:26
Speaker 2: Those are the most annoying.
• 47:28
Speaker 4: Yes, yes, and and you know when and I'm thinking
• 47:32
Speaker 4: to myself, man, maybe I need to milk this.
• 47:36
Speaker 5: And that's and that's funny because I think that oftentimes
• 47:40
Speaker 5: we don't think if professional athletes having that sort of mindset.
• 47:44
Speaker 5: We don't think of them like like needing to draw motivation.
• 47:48
Speaker 5: But I think that's maybe pervasive just in all in everything,
• 47:52
Speaker 5: you know, whether it's we marriage, whether it's your professional crib,
• 47:55
Speaker 5: no matter how it is.
• 47:57
Speaker 4: We were three and thirteen in Minnesota, my second year
• 48:00
Speaker 4: with less Steckel. I'm telling you now, there were a
• 48:03
Speaker 4: ton of guys who came out missed numbers of games
• 48:09
Speaker 4: solely because they were injured. And I'm making the case
• 48:13
Speaker 4: that they were milking those injuries because it was just
• 48:16
Speaker 4: we were we were you know, we just weren't good
• 48:19
Speaker 4: and we're not going nowhere, you know.
• 48:21
Speaker 2: And and and between the three games they was like.
• 48:25
Speaker 4: Early middle, it was like it wasn't like we got
• 48:29
Speaker 4: we ain't have no stretch of wins.
• 48:31
Speaker 2: They were all stretches of losses. And so you you
• 48:34
Speaker 2: ain't trying to get back in there. You don't want
• 48:36
Speaker 2: to be part of that.
• 48:37
Speaker 5: And see that's crazy because like we don't think of
• 48:39
Speaker 5: it like that. I mean, I think if you play
• 48:41
Speaker 5: sports at any level, we all know that guy, right,
• 48:43
Speaker 5: we all know them guys or girls who just they're
• 48:45
Speaker 5: gonna milk it. They're gonna kind of lay back with
• 48:47
Speaker 5: things are going good, or front runners. But we don't
• 48:50
Speaker 5: necessarily think of professional athletes in that sort.
• 48:52
Speaker 4: Of There are guys that there are, There are there
• 48:54
Speaker 4: are players, legit players who will milk training camp for
• 49:00
Speaker 4: whatever reason. You know, I got a little little tweak
• 49:03
Speaker 4: in my in my hip, I got a little tweak
• 49:05
  Speaker 4: in my calf.
• 49:07
Speaker 2: A little issue with my shoulder.
• 49:09
Speaker 5: And brother they gonna sit out and that's and what's
• 49:12
Speaker 5: crazy to me, Like because I've I've known those type
• 49:16
  Speaker 5: of guys.
• 49:17
  Speaker 2: They'll milk it.
• 49:18
Speaker 5: They'll mike the two a days, maybe practice one week,
• 49:21
Speaker 5: they're off for two weeks, you know, whatever it is.
• 49:24
Speaker 5: But it's some guys that can do that, to sit
• 49:26
Speaker 5: around kind of piddle around, and then they'll just come
• 49:29
  Speaker 5: out and ball.
• 49:30
Speaker 2: Like I've always kind.
• 49:31
Speaker 5: Of been envious of that guy who can do that
• 49:33
Speaker 5: because I'm not that guy like I have. I need
• 49:35
Speaker 5: all the practices, all the mental work I can get.
• 49:38
Speaker 4: And Okay, so now as a coach, Okay, now, as
• 49:41
Speaker 4: a coach to you, I don't think that's true about you.
• 49:48
Speaker 4: I don't as being able to have coached you, I
• 49:50
Speaker 4: don't think that that's true about you. I think your
• 49:53
Speaker 4: issue was you were not dedicated to football as much
• 49:59
  Speaker 4: as you were.
• 50:00
Speaker 2: Success you you were looking to be.
• 50:03
Speaker 4: You wanted to be somebody you you were academically you were,
• 50:06
Speaker 4: you knew you were solid, you knew you wanted something.
• 50:09
Speaker 4: So what was competing against you on the football field?
• 50:13
Speaker 4: Was you being the person that you became. Maybe there's
• 50:18
Speaker 4: no there's no question because if you the dude who
• 50:25
Speaker 4: wants to wants to get somewhere on it, wants it
• 50:27
Speaker 4: to take him somewhere. Right, you playing hurt, you know,
• 50:31
Speaker 4: I mean I played hurt a ton of times.
• 50:33
Speaker 5: But but I'll say this though, I think what I what,
• 50:37
Speaker 5: what I didn't understand is that And it's funny and
• 50:41
Speaker 5: I would even say this the same way I took
• 50:43
Speaker 5: the classrooms the same way I needed to take the
• 50:45
Speaker 5: field as far as I needed to have like the
• 50:48
Speaker 5: study portion of it, like I needed to like almost
• 50:51
Speaker 5: be in a football library and to study it at
• 50:55
Speaker 5: nauseum because I think that's where like my understanding comes from.
• 50:58
Speaker 5: Like like you said, you understand it's gonna come from
• 51:00
Speaker 5: but on the field. If I can get it like
• 51:03
Speaker 5: mentally first and then I could practice it, then it comes.
• 51:07
Speaker 5: Just like Chris Branda, he taught me kind of the
• 51:09
Speaker 5: nuances of throwing. He gave me a book. I read
• 51:11
Speaker 5: the book. He literally gave me a book by Phil Simms,
• 51:16
Speaker 5: who's like just throwing you the basic mechanics of throwing.
• 51:19
Speaker 5: I read the whole book multiple times, and then I
• 51:22
Speaker 5: was able to practice it. So that's kind of where
• 51:25
Speaker 5: and and and and you know, and and I'll and
• 51:28
  Speaker 5: I'll say this, I don't then, I don't think I
• 51:30
Speaker 5: understood how to study football.
• 51:34
Speaker 4: And again I'm staying at the coach and you're the
• 51:36
Speaker 4: and you're my player now, and I'm gonna take Chris.
• 51:40
Speaker 4: Chris did have he he did do some studying. He
• 51:44
Speaker 4: kind of didn't know kind of a little bit more
• 51:47
Speaker 4: than but he didn't have He didn't have the size
• 51:50
Speaker 4: and all of the things that you had. And that's
• 51:53
Speaker 4: and you you were set up to.
• 51:58
Speaker 2: Be able to really be a really good quarter, That's
• 52:01
Speaker 2: what and that's what hurts me.
• 52:03
Speaker 4: Yeah, because because part of all of the all of
• 52:06
Speaker 4: the knowledge stuff that you've learned from from through the
• 52:10
Speaker 4: political realm, through through your life that you went in
• 52:14
Speaker 4: and studied and learned it. You know, the rules, the law,
• 52:17
Speaker 4: all this kind of stuff, if you have put just
• 52:21
Speaker 4: a quarter of that in the football.
• 52:24
  Speaker 2: And and and.
• 52:26
Speaker 4: I mean because think about think about what you know
• 52:28
Speaker 4: about cover two, cover three, cover four. Now it's like
• 52:32
Speaker 4: you know that kind of stuff. It's like what I
• 52:36
Speaker 4: should be able to throw in the hole on any
• 52:38
Speaker 4: one of those any one of those coverages.
• 52:40
Speaker 2: I actually know what to do when you whatever coverage
• 52:42
  Speaker 2: you get me.
• 52:43
Speaker 5: And it was crazy is this weekend. It's funny, like
• 52:46
Speaker 5: I thought popped them. I remember Mike Mayer was our
• 52:50
Speaker 5: Mike Mayor. He was a safety of West Virginia State.
• 52:52
Speaker 5: He was an All American. He was a really high
• 52:55
Speaker 5: level player, and I remember he was staying here for
• 52:58
Speaker 5: the summer where as state practicing, and we're just kind
• 53:01
Speaker 5: of I mean, not him, but us, We're kind of
• 53:04
Speaker 5: just kind of we're there, but we just want to
• 53:06
Speaker 5: feel throwing. It's kind of lillygagging around, but we're like, yeah,
• 53:12
Speaker 5: we're there, you know what I'm saying. But it wasn't
• 53:14
Speaker 5: necessarily very intense, right man. He rips into me, He
• 53:18
  Speaker 5: rips into me.
• 53:19
Speaker 2: I mean, just rips. Don't you want to be great?
• 53:21
Speaker 2: Da da da da? Just rips into me.
• 53:23
Speaker 5: And at the time I was just like, man, Mike, yeah, chilloud,
• 53:27
Speaker 5: you're always intense. You know what I'm saying. I'm just
• 53:29
Speaker 5: kind of playing them off. But I don't think what
• 53:32
  Speaker 5: I understood. I don't think I understood what he was
• 53:35
Speaker 5: actually trying to say. And you know, we're young, so
• 53:37
Speaker 5: he didn't necessarily articulate it. But what he was trying
• 53:39
Speaker 5: to say was to your point, And I just say like,
• 53:42
Speaker 5: you know, if you have that opportunity, Like I always
• 53:45
Speaker 5: tell kids, if you have the opportunity to play, just
• 53:47
Speaker 5: go ahead and max it out. Like I said, I
• 53:49
  Speaker 5: was a six three, two thirty quarterback. I'm I'm I'm
• 53:53
Speaker 5: entering camping two thirty losing twenty pounds, you know what
• 53:57
Speaker 5: I'm saying. After camp, So and I was, you know,
• 53:59
Speaker 5: I was to take hits, and it was just you know,
• 54:01
Speaker 5: I was never a guy that was hurt often, so
• 54:04
Speaker 5: it's just you know, and then.
• 54:05
  Speaker 4: I'm I'm going into I'm going into college. I graduated
• 54:09
Speaker 4: high school fifty five at sixty four, and and and
• 54:17
Speaker 4: everything under the sun, everything everything, because I knew what
• 54:21
Speaker 4: I wanted, and I knew that I had to get bigger.
• 54:24
  Speaker 2: I knew I had to get stronger. I knew I
• 54:25
Speaker 2: had to get faster.
• 54:26
Speaker 4: And and I didn't have the see I put football
• 54:31
Speaker 4: on on on the only burner right, Academics were not
• 54:36
Speaker 4: on the burner for me. I had to get readjusted
• 54:39
Speaker 4: into into making sure taking care of the academic piece
• 54:42
Speaker 4: because I was so locked into football.
• 54:45
Speaker 2: And I'm one step away.
• 54:46
Speaker 5: Yeah, And that's and I always tell kids, that's not
• 54:48
  Speaker 5: I don't ever tell kids, have a plan, a play
• 54:50
Speaker 5: and b whatever like that. Get locked into you what
• 54:53
Speaker 5: you want to do. I mean, have other interests, but
• 54:55
Speaker 5: be focused because to your point, you know, if you
• 54:58
Speaker 5: look at your football career, you you were able to
• 55:00
Speaker 5: max it out to go to the highest level. You
• 55:02
Speaker 5: were able to coach, you were able to have a
• 55:04
Speaker 5: career at state, and you have a career based off
• 55:06
Speaker 5: of ATHLETs what you're doing now, and speaking of that nothing,
• 55:10
  Speaker 5: I don't know how much. I don't know how much
• 55:12
Speaker 5: time we got left, but I want to talk about
• 55:15
Speaker 5: because we both are fans of the Olympics, yes, and
• 55:18
Speaker 5: we both are fans of rugby.
• 55:19
  Speaker 2: Seven's to me.
• 55:22
Speaker 5: Like that is my that's my probably hand besides track
• 55:25
Speaker 5: and field, which we'll talk about later as it comes up,
• 55:28
Speaker 5: but that's probably my favorite Olympics sport. And I don't know,
• 55:31
Speaker 5: if you watched the women's it was it's phenomenal.
• 55:35
Speaker 2: Listen, I don't know. I'm not one hundred percent sure that.
• 55:41
Speaker 4: That that There are some there are some dudes who
• 55:43
Speaker 4: I know I played ball with. Better not get out
• 55:47
Speaker 4: there with them. It was because they're not playing. Yeah,
• 55:50
Speaker 4: I mean, I mean that thing is physical, physical. I
• 55:56
Speaker 4: mean you know, and you say, oh, well it's just
• 55:57
Speaker 4: a girl. Okay. They get out there and get hit
• 56:02
Speaker 4: and you ain't got no pads on nothing, You ain't
• 56:04
Speaker 4: got nothing on it.
• 56:05
Speaker 2: So you basically playing sandlots handlfe for that. And it
• 56:08
  Speaker 2: seemed to me.
• 56:09
Speaker 5: And even if you watch the guys, because the guys
• 56:11
Speaker 5: had the rugby seven, I think the US was in
• 56:13
Speaker 5: the I want to say they were in the Bronze.
• 56:15
Speaker 5: They were kind of in the hub, but we didn't
• 56:17
Speaker 5: make it. And it's just such a great sport. And
• 56:21
Speaker 5: why I love it so much is because it's it's
• 56:24
Speaker 5: what we did as kids, essentially really structured in rules. Yes,
• 56:28
Speaker 5: and I think I think somebody I would love to
• 56:32
Speaker 5: see a rugby seven league in the United States because
• 56:35
Speaker 5: I think for a lot of our D two players,
• 56:38
Speaker 5: a lot of our players who don't make the NFL
• 56:40
Speaker 5: or don't make you know, Canada, that would be a
• 56:43
Speaker 5: great alternative for them to start playing.
• 56:45
Speaker 4: But think about it, Okay, those guys know that they're
• 56:51
Speaker 4: gonna have gear on. Yeah, everybody who plays football with
• 56:56
Speaker 4: gear on can't necessarily play it with no gear on.
• 57:00
  Speaker 2: I mean that's true, that's true. You know that's true.
• 57:02
Speaker 2: I'm not saying everybody.
• 57:03
Speaker 5: I'm just saying it's all because if we grew up
• 57:05
Speaker 5: playing rugby slipping the sense, yes we did, you know
• 57:08
Speaker 5: what I mean. I mean we grew up playing tackle football, which,
• 57:11
Speaker 5: now that I think about it, I mean, if I
• 57:12
Speaker 5: have a son, I was like, you're a grandson for you.
• 57:15
Speaker 2: Hey dad, Hey grand dad, I'm going to play tackle
• 57:17
Speaker 2: with the guy. No, you know what I'm saying, And
• 57:20
Speaker 2: that's crazy. You would even say no? Yeah, I would.
• 57:22
Speaker 4: I would definitely say no because now I understand the
• 57:26
Speaker 4: reality of it. But back then when I was doing it.
• 57:28
Speaker 4: But again, but even with that, it's no head to head.
• 57:31
  Speaker 4: It's it's it's safer in some aspect because you're not
• 57:34
Speaker 4: necessarily leaving leading with your head.
• 57:36
Speaker 2: But but but but that head's vulnerable still. I mean,
• 57:39
Speaker 2: it's all vulnerable. Yeah, Like I said, they ain't playing out.
• 57:42
Speaker 4: I watched it and I was like, and they're and
• 57:44
Speaker 4: they're grabbing each other and they're like taking him down
• 57:47
Speaker 4: and pulling at the ball, and I'm like, man, did
• 57:50
Speaker 4: you see like the last run of game winning like
• 57:53
Speaker 4: they call it a tuddy she broke she breaks the tackle.
• 57:56
Speaker 5: The wolfan I don't know her name, woman from the US.
• 57:59
Speaker 5: She breaks tackle, she basically runs the length of the field,
• 58:02
  Speaker 5: scores with.
• 58:03
Speaker 2: No time on the flock. Yes, just like man, that's like,
• 58:06
Speaker 2: that's one of the greatest that you never and you
• 58:10
  Speaker 2: never forget that.
• 58:11
Speaker 4: Yeah, and that's gonna be one of those things when
• 58:13
Speaker 4: you talk about rugby.
• 58:14
Speaker 2: That's that's the video you gonna see.
• 58:16
Speaker 5: And that's and again, we gotta make this rugby the
• 58:19
Speaker 5: fifteens and you got the elevens and need the rugby seven.
• 58:21
Speaker 5: Is what I'm talking about is rugby. What we're discussing
• 58:24
Speaker 5: is rugby seventh. I think that's the sport that I
• 58:27
Speaker 5: can see that could translate to an American audience. In addition,
• 58:31
Speaker 5: I watched them swimming. I watched the women's the gymnastics.
• 58:37
Speaker 4: Oh my god, the athleticism, the strength bro is I mean,
• 58:45
Speaker 4: it's it's crazy. If I could even do the twist
• 58:49
  Speaker 4: and spin.
• 58:50
  Speaker 2: But I'm not.
• 58:51
  Speaker 4: I'm not landing. I'm not landing. I'm gonna it's gonna
• 58:55
Speaker 4: be terrible. And what I'm looking at the US, I'm
• 58:58
  Speaker 4: just looking.
• 58:58
Speaker 2: At the whole squad is bad. Man.
• 59:01
Speaker 5: The man I was looking at like the balance beam.
• 59:04
Speaker 5: I'm looking at the little horse thing. I'm looking at
• 59:07
  Speaker 5: the vault.
• 59:08
  Speaker 2: I'm just like.
• 59:08
Speaker 5: These women, all of them, and even the even the men,
• 59:12
Speaker 5: the men one bronze, the brother, the brother, the young
• 59:16
Speaker 5: brother who's, like I said, the first brother, I think
• 59:19
Speaker 5: that I can remember, and he's and he does this
• 59:21
Speaker 5: thing on social media. And again he's just breaking so
• 59:24
Speaker 5: many barriers. And I would just like to see, you know,
• 59:28
Speaker 5: us have more diversity in the sports that we choose.
• 59:31
Speaker 5: Like again, I understand us barriers and everything like that,
• 59:33
Speaker 5: but I mean to see those ladies, to see those men,
• 59:37
Speaker 5: just to man, that's just it was a great feeling.
• 59:39
  Speaker 2: I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna I'm gonna say this
• 59:44
  Speaker 2: and and and.
• 59:45
Speaker 4: I'm gonna make the case that it's wrong. But men's gymnastics. See,
• 59:52
Speaker 4: I don't see the kid that's sitting at home maybe
• 59:55
Speaker 4: watching that and thinking that they wanted that that's the
• 59:58
Speaker 4: sport they want to play.
• 1:00:00
Speaker 2: I think they should. I think they should, but I
• 1:00:03
Speaker 2: don't know if they think.
• 1:00:05
Speaker 4: That because you know, because I'm not sure how I
• 1:00:08
Speaker 4: would have responded to my son saying he wanted to
• 1:00:10
Speaker 4: play he wanted to do gymnastics, you know, I'm like,
• 1:00:13
Speaker 4: what do you mean is there even a guy gymnastics program?
• 1:00:17
Speaker 4: Like where are you gonna do that at? But I
• 1:00:19
Speaker 4: mean when you see those dudes, I mean, you can't.
• 1:00:23
Speaker 4: You can't take away the athleticism. You can't take the strength,
• 1:00:29
Speaker 4: the just the artistic piece of it is absolutely amazing.
• 1:00:34
Speaker 5: And I say, like the body control. I was talking
• 1:00:36
Speaker 5: to a friend of mine and he has little kids.
• 1:00:38
Speaker 5: He's started mind on sports. I was like, man, if
• 1:00:40
Speaker 5: I had if I had kids, or if not, if
• 1:00:43
Speaker 5: I had boys, or if I just said, if my
• 1:00:45
Speaker 5: daughters were serious about sports and really want to do it,
• 1:00:48
  Speaker 5: I'm like, we're gonna do gymnastics a soccer first. We're
• 1:00:50
Speaker 5: gonna learn your body control so that way you can
• 1:00:53
Speaker 5: because every like the most athletic guys that I just
• 1:00:55
Speaker 5: know on the street, they can do all types of
• 1:00:57
Speaker 5: flips in all sort and we look at and like, man,
• 1:01:01
Speaker 5: that's crazy, how'd you do that?
• 1:01:02
Speaker 2: Such body control? Right?
• 1:01:04
Speaker 4: So okay, if you if okay, if you said you
• 1:01:07
Speaker 4: had a son and you would you would you would
• 1:01:11
Speaker 4: put him in gymnastics?
• 1:01:15
Speaker 2: What would you be trying to get for him?
• 1:01:17
Speaker 5: I want to I want to build because when I
• 1:01:20
Speaker 5: think about building. I wouldn't necessarily think about building a football, basketball,
• 1:01:25
  Speaker 5: soccer player.
• 1:01:25
Speaker 2: I want to build an athlete.
• 1:01:27
Speaker 5: So and I think there's no better place to start
• 1:01:31
Speaker 5: them than gymnastics, because if you can have control of
• 1:01:34
Speaker 5: your body at mid air, you can get front flips, backflips,
• 1:01:37
Speaker 5: you can hoist yourself up without necessarily you know what
• 1:01:41
Speaker 5: I'm saying, without some like the rings, without names, necessarily
• 1:01:43
Speaker 5: thinking about what you're doing. Right, it's guys in the
• 1:01:46
Speaker 5: gym we've been lifting waist their whole life. I mean,
• 1:01:48
  Speaker 5: we've been working.
• 1:01:49
Speaker 2: Out a whole life. I can't do that, you know
• 1:01:50
  Speaker 2: what I'm saying.
