- 0:30severe mental health issues, so get yourself comfortable and
- 0:34enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:40Hi, it's Adam here. And in this episode of The
- 0:43Hypnotist, you're going to be listening to a procrastination
- 0:48hypnosis session. And it was created for an
- 0:51academic that had invested a lot of time in doing a thesis, doing
- 0:57a dissertation, and had some final bits that they needed to
- 1:00do. And there was two key things
- 1:03that came up in the conversation that we were having the the pre
- 1:08elicitation element of the session.
- 1:12And that was one part of the research thing that she was
- 1:15studying was a particular time in history and how that had
- 1:18impacted things leading up to the current day.
- 1:22And part of that was based in the 15th century in
- 1:26Constantinople. And that put a seed of a thought
- 1:31in my head that actually that could be quite a good way of
- 1:35giving it a disassociation level that's still connected into
- 1:39something that they would have an understanding of.
- 1:43The second is that they use this phrase that when they finish
- 1:47this dissertation, when they finish this thesis, when it's
- 1:51submitted, when there's nothing more to be done at that point,
- 1:54it would be a milestone for them.
- 1:57And again, a milestone is an unconscious metaphor to
- 2:01represent either how far you've gone or how much the left there
- 2:06is to do depending on which direction the milestone is.
- 2:11And what was fascinating for me is that the way that they
- 2:14described the burden and the pressure and the the weight of
- 2:22the challenge and the things they had to do, it occurred to
- 2:27me that there is another unconscious metaphor that a lot
- 2:30of people use when they're dealing with pressure and stress
- 2:34or big responsibilities. And they use the word millstone.
- 2:39And a millstone, obviously in real terms, is this huge
- 2:43concrete circular shape used to grind grain into flour.
- 2:49But metaphorically, it's a heavyweight and people often
- 2:53perceive it to be like a millstone around their neck.
- 2:56So it's really weighing them down.
- 2:58And what's interesting is that there is only one letter
- 3:00different between millstone and milestone.
- 3:03And I utilize this going from a millstone, a burden, into a
- 3:08milestone that represents irrefutable evidence that a
- 3:13challenge or adversity can be overcome.
- 3:17And it uses some historical context that uses that metaphor.
- 3:21And it also has future pacing. What's really important when
- 3:24you're doing a therapy session is to test with the client if
- 3:28they now perceive their future to be different as a result of
- 3:32the very work that we're doing. And I'm looking for head nods.
- 3:35I'm looking for things that give me evidence that there is a
- 3:38shift in that future of that individual.
- 3:42So you're going to hear the future pacing as well.
- 3:45Now, it's unlikely if you're listening to this, that you have
- 3:48a research project that is related to some historical
- 3:53significance that also feels a burden.
- 3:56What is more likely is there is at least one thing in your life
- 4:01that is something you're procrastinating on, something
- 4:04that is the millstone for you. And just as it is with this
- 4:08client, once they overcome that procrastination, the millstone
- 4:13can become a milestone. So to really get value from
- 4:16this, think of one thing you've been putting off for way too
- 4:20long. And if you did it, not only
- 4:23would you release the weight of all of this that you've been
- 4:25holding onto, but also inevitably you would have the
- 4:29thought, well, what's next? What can I now do now that I've
- 4:33got this thing behind me? So think about that and you'll
- 4:36get way more out of this session.
- 4:38Obviously, if you like the idea of a bespoke customized session,
- 4:41there will be a link in the show notes where you can schedule a
- 4:43free consultation call to explore working with me.
- 4:47For now though, find a quiet, comfortable place where you
- 4:49won't be disturbed. Relax and enjoy the session.
- 5:47Take a deep breath in, and as you breathe in, breathe in that
- 5:56slow, long, relaxing breath, and as you exhale, feel a wonderful
- 6:05sense of release. The tension is leaving your body
- 6:12in that outward breath, and the deeper you breathe, the more
- 6:26relaxed you become. And I want you to scan your body
- 6:33pretty clues of tension or heaviness.
- 6:41Sometimes when people make a shift, they use the phrase, it's
- 6:48like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders because
- 6:55sometimes a burden can feel like a millstone around our neck,
- 7:04weighing us down. And these can be heavy emotions,
- 7:16responsibilities, judgements, or just things that need to be
- 7:24done. And interestingly, this weight
- 7:32can sometimes feel heavier or lighter, not based on the burden
- 7:41of responsibility, but simply based on how resourceful that
- 7:49person feels. I want you to imagine as you're
- 7:56breathing in, you are breathing in not just relaxation, but
- 8:06resourceful relaxation. These resources can be whatever
- 8:14resources feel most useful. Energy, clarity, determination,
- 8:24or tenacity allow your unconscious to breathe in
- 8:30whatever resources you need most.
- 8:34And as you breathe out, feel that you're releasing anything
- 8:41that would make that millstone heavier.
- 8:47Judgement, doubt, or sometimes just thinking the challenge is
- 9:00bigger than it actually is. Breathe in what your body needs
- 9:08and exhale anything that feels like it's weighing you down.
- 9:21As you breathe in and breathe out, feel yourself drifting
- 9:26back. And I want you to imagine
- 9:32reading a research paper that talks about a time in history,
- 9:43not 50 years ago or 100 years ago.
- 9:47Imagine reading about a time in history over 500 years ago, in a
- 9:59particular part of the world where change was happening,
- 10:06certain ways of thinking were being challenged by new ideals,
- 10:16new beliefs. I want you to think about that
- 10:22place and that time in history. And as your body relaxes, your
- 10:29imagination awakens. And I want you to imagine what
- 10:35it would be like to be on a pathway, a Rd. either going in
- 10:45or out of an ancient city. Maybe you can imagine cobbled
- 10:55streets, the smell of smoke in the air that comes from burning
- 11:04wood or baked bread, or just that scent of people living at
- 11:17that time, lots of animals. It would have had a unique
- 11:23smell. You might even be able to
- 11:27picture the style of buildings that would have existed back
- 11:32then. Perhaps this was a place where
- 11:41traders would congregate. And maybe you can imagine the
- 11:46sound of merchants or footsteps echoing in narrow alleys,
- 11:53perhaps even the sound of prayers, the feeling of a breeze
- 12:02on your skin. Allow your imagination to
- 12:10suspend any idea of how it actually was and just give you a
- 12:16sense of how your imagination would want it to be.
- 12:23Perhaps you can imagine passing through a marketplace bustling
- 12:29with life, energy, and movement. Back then, bread was one of
- 12:41those things that was needed to condense energy into something
- 12:47that would give people that instant boost of energy in just
- 12:56a few bites of that style of bread from back then.
- 13:05And imagine noticing, tucked behind one of the main roads in
- 13:10that ancient city, you come across a mill.
- 13:18The kind of mill that may be powered by animals or water.
- 13:29But imagine seeing those massive millstones grinding the grain
- 13:34into flour. What would have been incredible
- 13:41effort required for a person becomes almost effortless for
- 13:49these millstones. Stones grinding on stones,
- 13:56crushing the grain into flour rapidly.
- 14:04Perhaps you can imagine 2 heavy circular stones, 1 stationary
- 14:10and one turning, powered by water or animal.
- 14:19And for a moment you pause and watch, and you can appreciate
- 14:24the weight of that stone, how necessary it is to be heavy.
- 14:33A millstone doesn't work if it's light.
- 14:39It is unrelenting, always turning, always grinding, always
- 14:45working. And perhaps that rotation of the
- 14:53stone becomes hypnotic, staring into the turning and turning and
- 14:58turning. And perhaps you reminisce or
- 15:04imagine something that relates to you.
- 15:15Something connects with you. Perhaps you recognize that
- 15:21millstone. It might even feel familiar,
- 15:28perhaps like the mental weight you've been carrying.
- 15:35Pressure and obligation and responsibility to finish, to
- 15:40prove yourself, to do what needs to be done.
- 15:47This burden is ancient. So are you.
- 15:52And now something within you begins to shift.
- 15:57I want you to get a sense that some people are carrying a
- 16:08millstone around their neck without realizing it.
- 16:12That heavy burden. I want you to imagine what you
- 16:20would look like if a version of you existed back then, but
- 16:27imagine that version of you with a smaller millstone around your
- 16:34neck, having to walk a journey to a specific destination.
- 16:46See that version of you with the responsibility, the burden, and
- 16:52you are the voice to help create a change.
- 17:01See that version of yourself with the millstone around your
- 17:04neck, worn, tired, but still moving forward, still pushing
- 17:13forward. Imagine stepping closer to that
- 17:17version of you and gently placing a hand on your own
- 17:22shoulder. Imagine talking to that other
- 17:27version of you. You carried this long enough.
- 17:35You're not a mill worker. You're so much more.
- 17:40A scholar, a creator, a thinker. And this weight no longer serves
- 17:48you in this form. I want you to encourage,
- 17:59encourage this other version of you by saying them.
- 18:04They are perhaps just 16 hours or 24 hours away from being able
- 18:10to put this millstone down. The millstone is making them
- 18:15stronger, but there's still a wait attached to it.
- 18:23I want you to get them imagining what it will be like when the
- 18:28millstone can be released. Imagine seeing yourself doing
- 18:38whatever is necessary to turn this millstone into a milestone.
- 18:49Maybe that's reviewing something, changing something.
- 18:55Perhaps it's condensing something, being more concise.
- 19:02Less is more. Imagine seeing you doing
- 19:07whatever is required to reach your destination.
- 19:15Maybe you do it in a week, 16 hours in a week, and then it's
- 19:21done. You can put this heavyweight
- 19:23down or maybe just two weeks, a few hours a day, and then it's
- 19:30done. And tell that to that version of
- 19:34you, you were just days away from being able to put this
- 19:40heavy millstone down. Imagine seeing it happen, see
- 19:49yourself doing whatever is necessary, and then look at that
- 19:54release and relief as that version of you can take off the
- 19:59millstone, place it down maybe just on the outskirts of the
- 20:07city, the ancient city. Why was a milestone called a
- 20:14milestone? Back then, in the past, there
- 20:22were no Rd. signs. There were rocks engraved
- 20:30letting travellers and merchants know how far away they were from
- 20:36these cities. I want you to imagine you are
- 20:44helping that other version of you take off the millstone to
- 20:48become the milestone and carved into it in timeless script and
- 20:58engravings. Here is where I turned pressure
- 21:07into proof. This isn't just symbolic, it's
- 21:13real. This stone now stands as
- 21:17irrefutable evidence that you faced the challenge and you
- 21:23finished. You overcame, you endured.
- 21:32And no one, no voice of doubt, No Fear of failure, can take
- 21:37that away. You carried the burden to its
- 21:43destination, and in doing so, you have laid a foundation of
- 21:51being stronger, more capable. You have unleashed and unlocked
- 22:00new skills, not just what you've learned, but also all of that
- 22:08knowledge and wisdom that only comes from thinking, what would
- 22:14I have done differently? Could I have been even more
- 22:18efficient, even more disciplined, even more
- 22:23tenacious? You get all of that, as well as
- 22:29the things you did experience. I want you to get a sense that
- 22:37you're becoming wiser, more capable as you stare into the
- 22:42milestone. This milestone now becomes a
- 22:49part of your internal landscape, and from this moment on, anytime
- 22:57you feel overwhelmed or hesitant, you can think of this
- 23:02milestone on the side of a Rd., A milestone that used to be a
- 23:08millstone. It's become a symbol, a symbolic
- 23:14representation of turning adversity into evidence, a
- 23:22burden into something wonderful, a foundation of your capability.
- 23:34Do you imagine staring into that milestone, hear the quiet truth
- 23:39whisper back, If I did that, what else can I also do?
- 23:51So every time you take action now, you're not starting from
- 23:56scratch. You're building on that
- 23:59foundation, on that legacy, on truth, on evidence.
- 24:10Your work is not a burden, even if sometimes it feels something
- 24:16heavy that needs to be pushed. It's a continuation of a path
- 24:21you've already proven you can walk.
- 24:27Imagine this is now done, completed the milestone.
- 24:33And imagine a future task. Two weeks, two months, 2 years
- 24:38from now. A next challenge, the next
- 24:44demand and your energy. And if you feel that familiar
- 24:50flicker of hesitation, notice when you think of the milestone,
- 24:55it melts away. Instead of freezing, you smile.
- 25:02You know how this story goes now.
- 25:05You've done it before. This intellectual and emotional
- 25:17challenge that you've overcome has made you stronger, Stronger
- 25:27than ever before. Going forward, it gets easier
- 25:36and easier because you're not starting from scratch, you're
- 25:44not under pressure, you are in motion.
- 25:50It's not a wait, it is now momentum.
- 25:59It's not a deadline, it's a legacy feel.
- 26:07Any sensation of being pushed or needing to push yourself now
- 26:12turn into feeling magnetically pulled towards that.
- 26:19You can't wait to make progress because every major
- 26:25accomplishment becomes a new milestone, even more evidence
- 26:33that you can take on bigger and more complex challenges knowing
- 26:41you have all of the resources necessary to make it a great
- 26:45success. Imagine leaving this ancient
- 26:53city but with a lightness, a spring in your step, renewed
- 27:01sense of energy, no weight holding you down, nothing you
- 27:09have to do, just things you get to do.
- 27:15Feel that light free energy as you leave the city and imagine
- 27:21returning back to the here and the now as you take a deep
- 27:26breath in through your nose and out through your nose.
- 27:33Just wiggle your fingers and wiggle your toes.
- 27:35Connect and calibrate into the here and the now.
- 27:38That's it as I now count from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken you
- 27:45starting to count. 123 waking up 456 more alert. 7-8.
- 27:53Open your eyes. Open your eyes. 910 wide awake,
