- Lucas: Velkommen til Learn Danish with Fexingo. Episode 73. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Lucas, I've been thinking about something. I know how to say 'kitchen' and 'living room', but what about the bathroom? I never learned that. Lucas: Oh, that's a great topic. The bathroom is a really useful room to talk about. Let's start with the word for 'bathroom' itself. In Danish, it's 'badeværelset'. Luna: Badeværelset. That's a long word. Badeværelset. Lucas: Exactly. Badeværelset. It literally means 'bath room'. Can you say it once more? Luna: Badeværelset. Lucas: Perfect. Now, inside a bathroom, you'll find a toilet. In Danish, 'toilettet'. Luna: Toilettet. That's pretty close to English. Toilettet. Lucas: Yes, it's a cognate. And then you have 'håndvasken', which means 'the sink'. Luna: Håndvasken. Håndvasken. That sounds like 'hand wash'. Lucas: Exactly. 'Hånd' means hand, 'vask' means wash. So literally 'hand wash'. Good observation. And for 'shower', it's 'bruseren'. Luna: Bruseren. That's a fun word. Bruseren. Lucas: You're doing great. Now, two more items you'll find in a bathroom: 'sæbe' for soap, and 'håndklæde' for towel. Luna: Sæbe and håndklæde. Sæbe, håndklæde. Lucas: Let's put these into a little scene. Imagine you're at a hotel in Denmark. You go into the bathroom. You say, 'Badeværelset er stort.' The bathroom is big. Luna: Badeværelset er stort. I remember 'stort' from when we learned big and small. Badeværelset er stort. Lucas: Yes, exactly. And then you see the toilet. 'Toilettet er rent.' The toilet is clean. Luna: Toilettet er rent. Rent. That's new. 'Rent' means clean? Lucas: Exactly. 'Rent' is the neuter form of 'ren'. Good catch. So 'Toilettet er rent.' Now, you wash your hands at the sink. 'Håndvasken er stor.' The sink is big. Luna: Håndvasken er stor. Lucas: And then you take a shower. 'Bruseren er varm.' The shower is warm. Luna: Bruseren er varm. Varm means warm. I remember that from beach episode. Bruseren er varm. Lucas: Perfect. Now, you use soap. 'Sæben er god.' The soap is good. Luna: Sæben er god. Wait, 'sæbe' became 'sæben'? With an -n? Lucas: Yes, because we're talking about a specific soap. In Danish, nouns get a definite ending. 'Sæbe' is indefinite, 'sæben' is definite. Like 'toilet' becomes 'toilettet', 'håndvask' becomes 'håndvasken'. So 'sæben' means 'the soap'. Luna: Oh, right. So 'sæben er god'. And towel? 'Håndklædet er blødt.'? Lucas: Almost. 'Håndklædet' is correct, and 'blødt' means soft. So yes, 'Håndklædet er blødt.' Excellent guess. Luna: Håndklædet er blødt. I love that. Soft towel. Lucas: Let's do a quick review. I'll say the English, you try the Danish. Ready? Luna: Ready. Lucas: The bathroom. Luna: Badeværelset. Lucas: The toilet. Luna: Toilettet. Lucas: The sink. Luna: Håndvasken. Lucas: The shower. Luna: Bruseren. Lucas: Soap. Luna: Sæbe. Lucas: Towel. Luna: Håndklæde. Lucas: You did it. That's all six words. Let's use them in a tiny story to help them stick. Imagine you're staying at a nice hotel in Copenhagen. You check in and go to your room. You open the door and see the bathroom. You want to tell your friend back home about it. 'Badeværelset er stort. Toilettet er rent. Håndvasken er stor. Bruseren er varm. Sæben dufter godt. Håndklædet er blødt.' The soap smells good. 'Dufter' means smells. Luna: Sæben dufter godt. That's a nice sentence. I can picture it. Lucas, this is really helpful. I can already imagine using these words. Lucas: I'm glad. Repeat after me: badeværelset. Luna: Badeværelset. Lucas: Toilettet. Luna: Toilettet. Lucas: Håndvasken. Luna: Håndvasken. Lucas: Bruseren. Luna: Bruseren. Lucas: Sæbe. Luna: Sæbe. Lucas: Håndklæde. Luna: Håndklæde. Lucas: Fantastic. That's it for episode 73. Practice these words next time you're in a bathroom. Tak for i dag, Luna. Luna: Tak for i dag, Lucas. Vi ses næste gang. Lucas: Vi ses. Keep practicing, everyone.
