- 3:05Speaker 3: now you're looking at the screen like.
- 3:06Speaker 4: What the devil is going on?
- 3:10Speaker 3: Y'all your girl got them technical difficulties today like i'm
- 3:15Speaker 3: right here looking at the screen and um all i see.
- 3:19Speaker 4: Is my logo.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Yeah i don't think you guys have ever seen my
- 3:24Speaker 3: logo behind the screen but there it is her the
- 3:27Speaker 3: young lady who created my logo name is pinterest amani
- 3:31Speaker 3: and she is on facebook and she has done my
- 3:35Speaker 3: logo for when it was the stick girl sitting on
- 3:38Speaker 3: top of the book And now we incorporate the podcast
- 3:42Speaker 3: and her on top of the SC. So, again, I
- 3:46Speaker 3: apologize for the technical difficulties that.
- 3:49Speaker 4: I'm having tonight.
- 3:51Speaker 3: And.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Y'all know, we're just going to make it do what
- 3:55Speaker 3: it do. So, I did have a guest tonight. Life
- 4:00Speaker 3: is a-lifing. I guess that's what I can say about that.
- 4:03Speaker 4: But your girl's still going to make it do what
- 4:04Speaker 4: it do.
- 4:06Speaker 3: So... I am doing this challenge, you guys, where I
- 4:09Speaker 3: am talking about certain aspects in books. Because this is
- 4:14Speaker 3: National Book Month. And I love the fact that there
- 4:17Speaker 3: is a National Book Month, okay?
- 4:19Speaker 4: And I found this calendar. Her name is The Reading Queen.
- 4:25Speaker 3: And I was just browsing on Facebook trying to get
- 4:28Speaker 3: some ideas for work. Because, you know, I work at
- 4:30Speaker 3: a public library. And I get a lot of my
- 4:32Speaker 3: programming ideas from the public library, okay? So, I was
- 4:39Speaker 3: looking and I found this calendar and it gives.
- 4:42Speaker 4: You a certain prompt for every day. Okay? It's like
- 4:46Speaker 4: a reading journal.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Okay? So, the prompt was to talk about a children's
- 4:53Speaker 3: book that you were in love with.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Okay?
- 4:57Speaker 3: So, before I bring up my children's book, I'm going
- 5:00Speaker 3: to tell you a little bit about it. When I
- 5:03Speaker 3: was younger, some years ago, now i'm not gonna be
- 5:07Speaker 3: scared of my age i am 46 years old you
- 5:09Speaker 3: guys i am blessed and beautiful and when i was
- 5:15Speaker 3: younger there wasn't much books for me okay and i
- 5:21Speaker 3: know you guys saying patrice why are you always so
- 5:26Speaker 3: fascinated with your race your color because if i'm not
- 5:31Speaker 3: who will be you know um I'm proud to be
- 5:36Speaker 3: African American, beautiful, and black. I am just proud of it.
- 5:40Speaker 3: And I love to read African American authors. Now, I'm
- 5:45Speaker 3: not saying, of course, that I won't read others, because
- 5:47Speaker 3: I do.
- 5:49Speaker 4: But I.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Don't see others promoting our books. Let's put it like that.
- 6:00Speaker 3: So it's an honor. So I've been like this ever
- 6:03Speaker 3: since I was little. So, you know, there wasn't much
- 6:05Speaker 3: kids books with little African-American girls. Better yet, little African-American boys.
- 6:12Speaker 3: I think what sticks out in my mind the most
- 6:15Speaker 3: when it comes to children's, it was Sesame Street.
- 6:19Speaker 4: And there was this one little.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Segment where you had the mother and the little girl.
- 6:25Speaker 3: And the mother was sending the little girl to the store.
- 6:28Speaker 3: And she kept on repeating what the little girl was
- 6:31Speaker 3: supposed to get. I need a stick of, container of milk,
- 6:36Speaker 3: a loaf of bread, a container of milk, and a
- 6:38Speaker 3: stick of butter. So the little girl's dancing down the street,
- 6:42Speaker 3: and when she gets to the store, she kind of forgets.
- 6:44Speaker 3: But then she hears her mom in her head, I
- 6:46Speaker 3: need a loaf of bread, a container of milk, and
- 6:49Speaker 3: a stick of butter. So, that is like, one of,
- 6:54Speaker 3: one of like, the only representation I know.
- 6:56Speaker 4: Okay? Little girls.
- 7:00Speaker 3: African American. when it came to, you know, books or
- 7:04Speaker 3: anything educational, to tell you the truth, at my age. So...
- 7:10Speaker 3: I went on the opposite side of the pond. And
- 7:14Speaker 3: I am about to bring up my favorite children's book.
- 7:19Speaker 3: And y'all, don't judge me. Because I was with the
- 7:23Speaker 3: five Chinese brothers.
- 7:27Speaker 4: I love the story....
- 7:31Speaker 3: It was just the fascination of each one of the
- 7:34Speaker 3: brothers that had their own gift. And if you don't
- 7:38Speaker 3: know the story of the five Chinese brothers, I'm going
- 7:41Speaker 3: to give you a little backdrop of it. So one
- 7:44Speaker 3: of the Chinese brothers can swallow the ocean whole. So
- 7:50Speaker 3: he was going fishing with a friend of his. And
- 7:52Speaker 3: his friend said, okay, you swallow the ocean and we're
- 7:54Speaker 3: going to grab as much as we can grab.
- 7:56Speaker 4: But when you see my hands wave, come in.
- 8:00Speaker 1: So.
- 8:01Speaker 3: He does it. He swoops all the water in, and
- 8:04Speaker 3: his friends are up there grabbing it, grabbing it, grabbing it,
- 8:06Speaker 3: grabbing it, grabbing it. So he puts his hands up,
- 8:09Speaker 3: but his friends doesn't pay attention. They keep being greedy
- 8:12Speaker 3: and grabbing, grabbing, grabbing. So now the Chinese brother, he
- 8:15Speaker 3: is kicking and waving and making all these over-exaggerated actions
- 8:25Speaker 3: so they could come out of the water. But they
- 8:28Speaker 3: didn't because they were being greedy.
- 8:30Speaker 4: So what happens? He spits the ocean back out. His
- 8:34Speaker 4: friends drown.
- 8:36Speaker 3: So, Chinese brother goes to his, goes to trial, and
- 8:41Speaker 3: they say, hey, you know what? You know, we're going
- 8:44Speaker 3: to have to, and, you know, you're going to have
- 8:47Speaker 3: to pay for that. Can I go, Chinese brother said,
- 8:51Speaker 3: can I go to my father? So I could wish
- 8:53Speaker 3: my father and my brothers to do. Okay? So, one
- 8:57Speaker 3: brother would come in exchange for another brother. Now, I
- 9:00Speaker 3: do not remember the order of how they wanted to them.
- 9:07Speaker 3: But I do know one was supposed to be burned.
- 9:10Speaker 3: The other one was supposed to be beheaded. The other
- 9:14Speaker 3: one was supposed to be smothered. And one of them
- 9:18Speaker 3: was supposed to be thrown in the bottom of the ocean.
- 9:22Speaker 3: But one brother was tall, so he could stretch. One brother,
- 9:27Speaker 3: his neck was made of steel, so it couldn't be broken.
- 9:30Speaker 3: The other brother, he can hold his breath. And then
- 9:36Speaker 3: the other brother couldn't be burned. So, for some reason,
- 9:42Speaker 3: I just oddly love that book. That's why this book
- 9:45Speaker 3: stuck with me. All of that to say this is
- 9:50Speaker 3: that we need to get back into... Reading.
- 9:55Speaker 4: With our kids. We need to get back into....
- 10:01Speaker 3: Adding a book to that daily lineup. It doesn't have
- 10:10Speaker 3: to be a physical book. Because some kids just don't
- 10:13Speaker 3: want the touch of a physical book.
- 10:15Speaker 4: Just like some adults.
- 10:16Speaker 3: Don't want the touch of a physical book. But we
- 10:18Speaker 3: have plenty of e-services because, you guys, literacy is a
- 10:24Speaker 3: big thing.
- 10:27Speaker 4: Literacy is huge.
- 10:28Speaker 3: It is everything wrapped up in one. Now, I have
- 10:34Speaker 3: to admit, I am proud of my state of South Carolina.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Our school scores.
- 10:41Speaker 4: Just came out, and they are awesome. great.
- 10:46Speaker 3: My daughter's middle school, um, Palmetto Scholars, I want to
- 10:50Speaker 3: say they're ninth in South Carolina, and, um, the high
- 10:55Speaker 3: school has.
- 10:56Speaker 4: Excellence across the boards.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Career readiness, um, college readiness, um, workforce readiness, um.
- 11:07Speaker 4: Amplitude, everything was excellent, okay?
- 11:09Speaker 3: So I'm proud of my state, and I see the progression,
- 11:14Speaker 3: and I'm going to say this. Hats off to Superintendent
- 11:19Speaker 3: Anita Huggins. You're doing your thing. My child does not
- 11:22Speaker 3: go to a Charleston County school, but I do follow
- 11:25Speaker 3: Charleston County School's Facebook page. And it is so informative. Parents,
- 11:31Speaker 3: if you are not a part of it, become a
- 11:34Speaker 3: part of it. All the information that you need for
- 11:37Speaker 3: your child, if you have questions, you do not have
- 11:42Speaker 3: Jill Smole that lives in a corner answering you you
- 11:46Speaker 3: have those that work at what is that 70 68
- 11:51Speaker 3: calhoun street that is giving you the information from their
- 11:54Speaker 3: mouth so hats off to you anita huggins and miss
- 11:57Speaker 3: vanessa denley hi miss vanessa that was my son's um
- 12:03Speaker 3: high school principal during covid she's beautiful oh my gosh
- 12:06Speaker 3: she's such a beautiful person but all i have to
- 12:09Speaker 3: say is you know our black community we need to
- 12:11Speaker 3: get back into literacy I understand we're big into sports.
- 12:16Speaker 3: I understand we're big into everything else. We're into the
- 12:20Speaker 3: sports club, cheerleading, and everything. But we need to get
- 12:23Speaker 3: back to literacy. Because what happens if Johnny breaks his arm?
- 12:28Speaker 3: What happens if Susan busts her knee? She needs a fallback.
- 12:33Speaker 3: And I'm not saying that literacy should be a fallback.
- 12:36Speaker 3: In no way it shouldn't be a fallback. It should
- 12:38Speaker 3: be the forefront.
- 12:40Speaker 5: Okay?
- 12:41Speaker 3: Um... So, yeah, that's what I'm just going to chat
- 12:45Speaker 3: with y'all tonight about. We do have the SC Book
- 12:51Speaker 3: Y'all Awards that's going to be coming up. So look
- 12:54Speaker 3: on the first week in November, that first Tuesday, I'm
- 12:59Speaker 3: going to be bringing you the categories. And then you
- 13:02Speaker 3: guys get to start voting and start doing, no, first
- 13:05Speaker 3: before we vote, we do the nominations.
- 13:07Speaker 4: You get to nominate.
- 13:08Speaker 3: Those who you feel deserve those awards.
- 13:11Speaker 4: Okay?
- 13:11Speaker 3: Okay.
- 13:14Speaker 4: What else do we have going on? We have....
- 17:47Speaker 3: She's coming back, and she's going to be talking about
- 17:50Speaker 3: her latest book, Athena. You guys, I will see you
- 17:54Speaker 3: next week, Tuesday. Remember, there's no such thing as an
- 17:57Speaker 3: old book, because not everybody's read every book.
- 18:00Speaker 4: I'll see you guys next Tuesday. Bye!
