- 0:01Speaker 1: John Our Broncos Insider Altitude Sports Radio ninety two five
- 0:06Speaker 1: Pro Football, The Insider.
- 0:08Speaker 2: I've covered the league a little while.
- 0:10Speaker 3: Chef Legwall, he's the balloon bopper. He doesn't blow it up.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
- 0:16Speaker 1: IBDW Local sixty eight.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Start with the job and with a career. It's Leggy
- 0:22Speaker 3: on Altitude Sports Radio.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Five.
- 0:26Speaker 4: Well, I think there's two things. I mean, never gonna
- 0:30Speaker 4: lose confidence. There's two things that take place in game.
- 0:33Speaker 4: You're paying attention to how's the game unfolding? That that
- 0:36Speaker 4: can affect greatly, you know, how you're calling your game,
- 0:40Speaker 4: and then immediately the opponent you're playing relative to sequencing
- 0:46Speaker 4: first down, second down, you know, and so that would
- 0:52Speaker 4: be my just haven't done this a long time, That
- 0:53Speaker 4: would be my first thought is, you know, how do
- 0:57Speaker 4: we think this game is going to be played in
- 1:00Speaker 4: and obviously being able to adjust if it's played differently.
- 1:03Speaker 4: I can't tell you how many times I've thought a
- 1:05Speaker 4: game was gonna go a certain way and then it
- 1:07Speaker 4: ended up going a different way.
- 1:11Speaker 1: I don't know if that fully explains forty nine dropbacks
- 1:14Speaker 1: and bow Nicks's first NFL game on the road in Seattle.
- 1:18Speaker 1: But all right, Sean joining us right now as he
- 1:22Speaker 1: makes this regular Friday visit to the program. It is
- 1:25Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald of ESPN. Jeff Legwald's appearances as always brought
- 1:30Speaker 1: to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBW
- 1:33Speaker 1: Local sixty eight. Start with a job and with a career. Yeah, Jeff,
- 1:37Speaker 1: you pointed that out at ESPN forty two pass attempts.
- 1:40Speaker 1: We all got into that number forty nine dropbacks for
- 1:45Speaker 1: bow Knicks in week one as you went back and
- 1:49Speaker 1: reviewed the film. Why did Sean Payton get so enamored
- 1:56Speaker 1: with having bo Nicks drop back in that game?
- 2:00Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 2:00Speaker 2: I mean, date, it's even worse if dude, there's two
- 2:03Speaker 2: rushing attempts that are actually passes but thrown behind the receivers,
- 2:09Speaker 2: so they were technically counted as rushing attempts. So if
- 2:13Speaker 2: you're doing pure raw data, it could be fifty one
- 2:17Speaker 2: drop back in the game. And you know, my guess
- 2:22Speaker 2: is you they again. I think offensive play callers in
- 2:27Speaker 2: the in the NFL surrender on the run game far
- 2:32Speaker 2: more quickly than they do on the pass game. You
- 2:34Speaker 2: could you could have one bad run and you won't
- 2:38Speaker 2: see it again for another half a quarter. But coordinators
- 2:43Speaker 2: are willing to throw twelve incomplete passes and a pick
- 2:46Speaker 2: and and it doesn't bother them at all. So I
- 2:49Speaker 2: think some of it is just the time we're in,
- 2:52Speaker 2: and I think some of it is Sean Payton as
- 2:55Speaker 2: a play caller. I think he believes in my gut
- 2:59Speaker 2: that he thinks he could sort of shoot his way
- 3:02Speaker 2: out of it, you know, like like you know, a
- 3:04Speaker 2: Steph Curry or something. And I think people just in
- 3:08Speaker 2: the league, I think it's it's a you know, I
- 3:12Speaker 2: think it's an affliction always that the past game is
- 3:16Speaker 2: giving all game does not. But I think if bone
- 3:22Speaker 2: Nicks drops back forty nine times Sunday, that's gonna be
- 3:26Speaker 2: a problem.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:27Speaker 1: So kind of along those lines. And you pointed this
- 3:29Speaker 1: out as well today at ESPN, is that Javonte and
- 3:33Speaker 1: Julia McLoughlin combined for eight carries of one yard or
- 3:36Speaker 1: fewer last week. So did Sean get spooked into that
- 3:41Speaker 1: by a lack of success rate and confidence in the
- 3:45Speaker 1: run game? Like, there has to be some plausible explanation.
- 3:49Speaker 1: I have to believe, and I could be dead wrong.
- 3:52Speaker 1: I have to believe that that wasn't Sean Payton's plan
- 3:55Speaker 1: going into the game.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Well, you know, Nate, I asked to you know, up
- 4:00Speaker 2: to the game, did you want to throw it forty
- 4:02Speaker 2: two times? And he said no, and he was pretty
- 4:06Speaker 2: emphatic about it. So I too believe that. But I
- 4:09Speaker 2: just I see it year after year, game after game
- 4:14Speaker 2: play callers the run game, they get far more scared
- 4:21Speaker 2: out of that after one or two unsuccessful plays than
- 4:26Speaker 2: they do about unsuccessful pass plays. And I think for
- 4:30Speaker 2: a play caller like Sean Payton this year, who knows
- 4:34Speaker 2: the explosives in the Broncos offense may be hard to
- 4:38Speaker 2: come by early on here, first down becomes really important.
- 4:42Speaker 2: And when first down it starts going bad, I think
- 4:45Speaker 2: that's when the throwing picks up as well. And first
- 4:49Speaker 2: down went pretty bad early in Seattle.
- 4:53Speaker 5: Jeff, I do have a question, but first I got
- 4:55Speaker 5: to give you a shout out on the week we
- 4:57Speaker 5: lost the iconic iconic James Earl Jones, the voice right
- 5:02Speaker 5: voice to Darth Vader.
- 5:04Speaker 3: You're calling in on the Darth Vader phone that keeps.
- 5:06Speaker 5: Giving us the between each answer, So I you know
- 5:10Speaker 5: what you really went top shelf to honor the man,
- 5:12Speaker 5: and I appreciate.
- 5:13Speaker 3: About that about you. Uh. By the way, I think
- 5:16Speaker 3: it is the first time we've ever read Jeff in
- 5:17Speaker 3: a car.
- 5:18Speaker 5: Jeff has never been in a car when we've done
- 5:20Speaker 5: an interview in five years.
- 5:21Speaker 3: All right, Jeff, what what the heck with.
- 5:25Speaker 5: Audrich Estimate all of a sudden being outd were you
- 5:28Speaker 5: were you hip to anything going on with him?
- 5:31Speaker 3: When what happened? Was it on the leap play he
- 5:33Speaker 3: got hurt?
- 5:35Speaker 5: Uh?
- 5:35Speaker 2: They they the Broncos contendant was on the second tarry
- 5:40Speaker 2: and uh, Estimate obviously has been told not to say
- 5:45Speaker 2: too much, so he didn't want to say too much
- 5:47Speaker 2: in the locker room. Uh, but you know, I looked
- 5:51Speaker 2: at the secondary and I guess I can sort of
- 5:54Speaker 2: see it as well, but that the Broncos say it
- 5:56Speaker 2: was on his second tarry of the game, and that's
- 5:59Speaker 2: that's when the curt and they sort of didn't know
- 6:03Speaker 2: it was gonna be that bad. And you know, until
- 6:05Speaker 2: they did the tests on Monday morning.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Talking to Jeff Legwald here on a Friday afternoon, Jeff
- 6:11Speaker 1: joins us on the ramos Law Hotline car accident. You
- 6:13Speaker 1: need ramos Law medical doctor and attorney visit ramos law
- 6:17Speaker 1: dot com, Jeff. We saw a Steelers defense that absolutely
- 6:22Speaker 1: suffocated the status Kirk Cousins on the road in Atlanta
- 6:27Speaker 1: last week. Now, Mike Tomlin, who by the way, has
- 6:30Speaker 1: an eight hundred career win percentage against rookie quarterbacks, Tomlin
- 6:34Speaker 1: and company turned their sights on the young, fresh faced
- 6:38Speaker 1: bow knicks of the Denver Broncos. You wrote about it
- 6:42Speaker 1: this week. The Broncos they have to help bo if
- 6:46Speaker 1: they're going to have any success in the short term,
- 6:49Speaker 1: short term with him as their quarterback. What do you
- 6:53Speaker 1: think they have to do?
- 6:55Speaker 2: All You've got to contain their two edge players. I mean,
- 7:01Speaker 2: that's especially Watt. I mean I went back and charted
- 7:05Speaker 2: the the Falcons game a couple of times, and there
- 7:10Speaker 2: are very few snaps in that game. If any where
- 7:14Speaker 2: Watt isn't isn't destroying something in the play, whether it's
- 7:21Speaker 2: just be knocking blockers into the into the path of
- 7:24Speaker 2: a ball carrier, forcing bumbles, getting to the quarterback, pressuring
- 7:28Speaker 2: on an interception. Uh And they only single blocked him
- 7:33Speaker 2: by Mike count roughly twelve times. So that's through double
- 7:37Speaker 2: teams and even a triple team on a couple of occasions.
- 7:40Speaker 2: So if the Broncos plan on leaving Mike McGlinchey on
- 7:44Speaker 2: his own against Watt and and go in a three
- 7:48Speaker 2: wide set forty plus snaps like they did against Seattle,
- 7:53Speaker 2: I think that's a bad that's bad mojo right there.
- 7:57Speaker 2: And I think they you know, the Steelers are offense
- 8:00Speaker 2: wasn't much to look at, but unlike a lot of teams,
- 8:04Speaker 2: they're very comfortable playing a game where they kick six
- 8:07Speaker 2: field goals and get on the bus. They don't mind,
- 8:10Speaker 2: doesn't bother them. They don't freak out. They just keep
- 8:14Speaker 2: kicking field goals and keep beating you. So the Broncos
- 8:19Speaker 2: really really have to be willing, I think, to slug
- 8:22Speaker 2: it out a little more this week and take their
- 8:24Speaker 2: shot that way.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Jeff, what's the stress level over there? That's the simplest
- 8:30Speaker 3: way I can ask it.
- 8:33Speaker 2: You know, I think he's really trying to protect a
- 8:36Speaker 2: young team Andy, and I don't blame him. I mean,
- 8:38Speaker 2: that's how you would do it. You got a lot
- 8:42Speaker 2: of young guys, especially a rookie quarterback. These are you know,
- 8:47Speaker 2: these are gonna be bumpy for the quarterback especially, and
- 8:51Speaker 2: keeping his confidence is going to be important, so and
- 8:56Speaker 2: again I think they just simply have to sort of
- 9:00Speaker 2: do better and acknowledging he's a rookie quarterback. I felt
- 9:05Speaker 2: like in Seattle they called the game as if they
- 9:08Speaker 2: wanted to prove he was advanced beyond his years and
- 9:14Speaker 2: he's not a rookie relly and all of those things.
- 9:16Speaker 2: But that's how it felt to me. And I think
- 9:20Speaker 2: if they do that over these next few weeks, I
- 9:23Speaker 2: think that would be ill advised. So I don't think
- 9:26Speaker 2: the stress level is too high yet, but a loss
- 9:30Speaker 2: and the home opener and then you know, this ten
- 9:32Speaker 2: day road trip could do a lot for the stress
- 9:36Speaker 2: level going either way.
- 9:37Speaker 3: I think all right.
- 9:39Speaker 5: Just for fun, we had old Craig Wolfly on yesterday,
- 9:41Speaker 5: man as old school as they come.
- 9:43Speaker 3: I asked him about the Run game.
- 9:45Speaker 5: He had a great story about his grandpa telling him
- 9:47Speaker 5: to pick up the sledgehammer and keep sledgehammering, and he said,
- 9:50Speaker 5: after twenty minutes again and done anything, and the guy
- 9:52Speaker 5: said keep going and finally broke the rock and all.
- 9:55Speaker 3: That and the Run games like that.
- 9:57Speaker 5: Give me a good Craig Wolfly story, if you got
- 9:59Speaker 5: one from your time in Pittsburgh, you.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Know, I don't really have a christ story. He wasn't
- 10:07Speaker 2: in my wheelhouse when I was there. But I will
- 10:10Speaker 2: tell you a run game story from when I was
- 10:12Speaker 2: Bill Cower's first season. That year, Barry Foster carried the
- 10:17Speaker 2: ball I think almost four hundred times. I think it
- 10:20Speaker 2: was like three to ninety. And we asked Bill Kauer
- 10:24Speaker 2: in November, when are you gonna stop handing the ball
- 10:27Speaker 2: to Barry? And he said when his arms fall off.
- 10:31Speaker 2: So that was his answer.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Hey, by the way, four hundred carries, But you spurred
- 10:36Speaker 1: a thought for me real quick, Jeff. I was looking
- 10:39Speaker 1: at your your boy Mel Kuiper's twenty twenty five Big
- 10:42Speaker 1: board this week, and he's got Travis Hunter at number one.
- 10:46Speaker 1: He's got Shador Sanders right now at number fourteen. He's
- 10:49Speaker 1: listing Shador third amongst the quarterbacks. He has him below
- 10:52Speaker 1: Carson Beck and Quinn Ewers and Leggie. I don't I
- 10:56Speaker 1: don't know if this is a thing, but you're the
- 10:58Speaker 1: guy to ask, because you're the one that talks to
- 11:00Speaker 1: all the scouts and you're the guy that pays attention
- 11:02Speaker 1: to these things. You know, you talk about Barry Foster
- 11:05Speaker 1: and four hundred carries, right there. You know, we talk
- 11:08Speaker 1: about backs coming into the league and you can ding
- 11:12Speaker 1: guys based upon how many carries they had at the
- 11:14Speaker 1: college level and say, you're wearing the tread off the tires.
- 11:18Speaker 1: This guy's gonna come into the league banged up. This
- 11:20Speaker 1: is a big concern. I wonder with a quarterback like
- 11:24Speaker 1: Shadure that takes as many hits as he does, is
- 11:29Speaker 1: there any thinking that's along the same lines when you
- 11:33Speaker 1: look at a quarterback that has been running for his
- 11:36Speaker 1: life and taking as many shots as Shador Sanders has
- 11:39Speaker 1: in his time at Colorado, that scouts might look at
- 11:43Speaker 1: that and say, we would have real health concerns based
- 11:46Speaker 1: upon how many hits this guy took at the college level.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Yeah, there is some of that. I will tell you
- 11:54Speaker 2: right now. The concern people have with Shadur and you
- 11:59Speaker 2: know other folks that see you and argue it or not,
- 12:02Speaker 2: I'm telling you NFL personnel people wonder, are half concerns
- 12:08Speaker 2: about the hits he's taken, that aret the offensive line's fault,
- 12:14Speaker 2: that he is simply holding the ball too long on
- 12:18Speaker 2: too many plays, and that that's part of poor decision making.
- 12:23Speaker 2: That's now not just a guy quote unquote trying to
- 12:27Speaker 2: make a play. That's a guy making bad decisions and
- 12:31Speaker 2: plays like the interception the other night, if those are
- 12:36Speaker 2: the ones that are just enormous red flags to personnel
- 12:42Speaker 2: people because he knows better than that, and his footwork
- 12:45Speaker 2: is starting to deteriorate. I already compared some of theirs
- 12:50Speaker 2: see you game video to game video from Jackson State. Now,
- 12:55Speaker 2: obviously you're not facing nearly the rush you are like
- 13:00Speaker 2: he's facing as CEU. But his footwork is regressing some
- 13:05Speaker 2: and that seeing him drop, and uh, I think he
- 13:10Speaker 2: I think NFL people just want to see him do
- 13:13Speaker 2: better on the plays that are not the offensive line issues,
- 13:18Speaker 2: better plays he's extending for for no reason other than
- 13:22Speaker 2: he wants something bigger down the field.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Wow, there's a lot to chew on right there. From
- 13:27Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald. We'll be talking about it an awful lot
- 13:30Speaker 1: as the season goes along, the buff season, the Broncos season,
- 13:33Speaker 1: and as we get closer to the draft. Jeff Legwald,
- 13:36Speaker 1: everybody ESPN dot com check is latest right there. It
- 13:38Speaker 1: is on how the Broncos can help bote Nicks out
- 13:41Speaker 1: both against Pittsburgh and going forward beyond that. But yeah, ESPN.
- 13:46Speaker 1: That's where you get Leggy Jeff, beautiful work man. Thanks Buddy,
- 13:50Speaker 1: Thanks Fellas,
