What the Paper Promises: IEC 61508 Parts IV to VII, FMEDA, SIL Certificates, Proven in Use and the Safety Manual
A pressure transmitter arrives at Al Sahil with a glossy certificate that says SIL 3 capable. Aisha Rahman wants to know what that sentence promises, and what it quietly leaves to her. With Tomas Novak she takes apart an FMEDA, recomputes a safe failure fraction on a whiteboard, finds the firmware version the certificate does not cover, argues about proven in use with a vendor who has a lot of operating hours and very few records, and reads a safety manual until it tells her what her proof test really has to be.
