- 0:00So, we've talked about the top 10
- 0:02greatest moments in New York sports
- 0:04history and we've also talked about the
- 0:06Knicks championship run and the things
- 0:08that they went through. Today, we're
- 0:09going to be talking about the top 10 New
- 0:12York sports blunders. And I'm going to
- 0:15be honest with you, dude, I I went
- 0:16through this thing and I could not find
- 0:18a lot that I remembered about. There's a
- 0:20few obviously everybody's going to know,
- 0:22but there were so many that I tried to
- 0:23remember and I couldn't really remember
- 0:25any of them. So, my list is definitely
- 0:27going to be a lot different than yours.
- 0:29So, how long did it take you to come up
- 0:31with these? Let me ask you that.
- 0:33>> Not long. I just I My problem was
- 0:36narrowing them down and then like
- 0:39putting them in in order where I felt
- 0:41like where where my number one was, you
- 0:44know what I mean? Like
- 0:46cuz there's a lot There's a lot. You
- 0:48probably forgot a lot of these and you
- 0:49want to forget a lot of these, but
- 0:50there's a lot. There's a lot of them.
- 0:52>> So, I definitely forgot, but we talked a
- 0:55little bit before the show about He came
- 0:56up with a ton of honorable mentions. I
- 0:58couldn't come up with one. That's how
- 1:00tough I found this to be. So, I'm going
- 1:02to let you start and we're going to
- 1:03cover
- 1:04>> to list that many.
- 1:08>> Yeah, we're going to cut it down to your
- 1:09top two honorable mentions and then
- 1:11we'll get into the actual list. So, I'm
- 1:12going to let you start. Give me your
- 1:14first honorable mention.
- 1:15>> So, my first honorable mention
- 1:18is going to be 2009 Mets versus Yankees
- 1:22June of 2009
- 1:24and it was a Subway Series
- 1:26and the Mets were winning 9 to 8
- 1:30and
- 1:32you know, like the Mets I guess
- 1:35they were you know, they were still
- 1:36relevant. They you know, they were
- 1:37coming off
- 1:39Yeah, I I won't go into too much, but
- 1:41they were they were still relevant team.
- 1:42Yankees were still good. Back to that
- 1:442009 was when the Yankees went to the
- 1:46World Series. So, the Mets were winning
- 1:48the game 9 to 8.
- 1:50Bottom of the ninth.
- 1:51K-Rod on the mound.
- 1:55He's about to wrap it up. Throws a pitch
- 1:57to A-Rod. A-Rod hits this can of corn
- 2:01to the second baseman, Luis Castillo,
- 2:04who in turn proceeds to drop the pop-up.
- 2:08And that's it, game over. Yankees score
- 2:11two runs, and you just I all I remember
- 2:14was K-Rod with his glove on his head,
- 2:17looking like what the hell just
- 2:19happened.
- 2:19>> Popped up.
- 2:22Castillo.
- 2:25DROP THE BALL! HE DROPPED THE BALL! HERE
- 2:28COMES TISHARA, AND THE YANKEES WIN!
- 2:32>> I didn't even remember that. I'm not
- 2:33going to lie to you. Like I do I
- 2:34remember it vaguely. That's the thing.
- 2:36So like didn't even come to my mind when
- 2:37we were talking about sports blunders.
- 2:39So I don't have another honorable
- 2:40mention. So you tell me what was your
- 2:41other one.
- 2:43>> Oh, you're not going to like this one. I
- 2:45It's It's just This is one of my
- 2:46favorite
- 2:48moments. And I I can't believe you
- 2:49didn't list this one, but
- 2:51November 27, 1994, Miami Dolphins versus
- 2:54the Jets.
- 2:56The Dolphins were losing 24 to 21. 22
- 3:01seconds left on the clock. Marino's
- 3:03marching down the field. He's running
- 3:05through the line of scrimmage. He's got
- 3:06about 22 seconds left. He's He's like
- 3:09getting down to the line like he's going
- 3:10to spike the ball.
- 3:12Gets to the line. The Jets are there
- 3:14flat-footed.
- 3:16Marino then in turn just takes the ball,
- 3:17throws it to Mark Ingram in the end
- 3:19zone.
- 3:21>> We are seeing another spectacular effort
- 3:23by Marino WHO FIRES TOUCHDOWN!
- 3:29>> TOUCHDOWN. MARINO'S running around the
- 3:31field like he just won the [ __ ] Super
- 3:32Bowl, and the Jets just in typical Jets
- 3:36fashion go down to the Dolphins.
- 3:39Dolphins end up going like that
- 3:40propelled them, and they end up winning
- 3:41the the uh AFC East that year. But just
- 3:45an incredible incredible defeat at the
- 3:48hands of Dan Marino.
- 3:49>> The fake spike. So let me tell you this
- 3:51is number nine my list.
- 3:53The number nine on my list, but let me
- 3:55set a scene for you, okay? The first
- 3:57half of that game, and I remember this
- 3:58game vividly. I
- 4:00The Jets were playing incredibly
- 4:02offensively. Boomer Esiason was the
- 4:04quarterback. Johnny Mitchell had a huge
- 4:07game in the first half, came out of
- 4:08nowhere that year. Incredible first
- 4:10half. I remember this cuz I'm at a bar
- 4:12with my family at some party, and I'm
- 4:15I'm at the bar watching the game, but
- 4:16there's no sound what the whatsoever.
- 4:18And I remember, man, the Jets are
- 4:20killing these guys. I'm like, "Oh, this
- 4:21is great. This great."
- 4:22Second half comes and it's just a
- 4:24downward spiral spiral ending the game
- 4:27in that fashion. Of course, who was that
- 4:29against? Aaron Glenn, who is now one of
- 4:31my favorite players, of course, growing
- 4:32up. And now he Of course, he is the Jets
- 4:34head coach. I'm I'm shocked it was an
- 4:35honorable mention for you. Like, to me,
- 4:37it was still number nine, but it was
- 4:38such a big part of the lowly Jets
- 4:41history that I thought it would make the
- 4:43list.
- 4:44>> Well, here's the Here's the thing.
- 4:45Here's why it didn't make my top 10 is
- 4:47because the game, ultimately, was
- 4:49insignificant. Jets sucked.
- 4:52>> Hold on. No, no. The Jets going into
- 4:54that game, they were six and four. So,
- 4:56no. They were doing well that season.
- 4:58That They lost every game after that
- 5:00one. They went six and 10 that year.
- 5:03They lost every game since that spike.
- 5:05>> Again, it wasn't it wasn't pivotal.
- 5:08Again, yes, they I mean, in typical Jets
- 5:10fashion, they they collapsed after that
- 5:12game.
- 5:13>> In true Jets fashion, Pete Carroll was
- 5:15the head coach of the Jets during his
- 5:17one season, and they were playing well
- 5:19defensively, offensively still they
- 5:21started to come alive with Boomer
- 5:22Esiason, Johnny Mitchell, like I said
- 5:24before. And all of a sudden, that game
- 5:26changed the course of history. Cuz after
- 5:29that season, the Jets fired Pete
- 5:31Carroll, they hired Rich Kotite. Pete
- 5:33Carroll went to New England. It would
- 5:34just It just sent the Jets down a
- 5:36miserable spiral. Not just for that
- 5:38season, but hiring Rich Kotite would
- 5:40have then eventually got us Bill
- 5:42Parcells. So, I guess something good
- 5:43came out of it a couple years down on
- 5:45line. So, that was your two honorable
- 5:46mentions. So, you want me to start
- 5:48number 10, right?
- 5:49>> Go right ahead.
- 5:51>> So, we're going to stick with the New
- 5:52York Jets and it is the butt fumble, the
- 5:56infamous butt fumble by Mark Sanchez.
- 5:59>> A year ago we talked to Tom Moore then
- 6:00at Indianapolis, the offensive
- 6:01coordinator. We got a busted play here
- 6:03and then and then Sanchez gets hit, the
- 6:06ball is loose and it's alive. I have
- 6:09never seen this before in my life.
- 6:11>> And it's only number 10 on my list
- 6:13because the Jets were terrible that year
- 6:14regardless. Like, if they were a good
- 6:16team like they were under Rex Ryan the
- 6:17previous couple of years it would have
- 6:19been a lot worse, but because the team
- 6:21was so bad that year,
- 6:23it's got to be at number 10. Yes, it's a
- 6:25horrific moment. Summed up the season,
- 6:27but don't forget under Rex Ryan the Jets
- 6:29were a really good football team. Two
- 6:30AFC Championship appearances in a row.
- 6:32They couldn't get it done, but to me
- 6:34yes, it's a bad New York sports moment
- 6:36because of what happened, but in the
- 6:38grand scheme of Jets fandom, it's really
- 6:40not that bad.
- 6:42>> It it actually was one of my honorable
- 6:44mentions just because it was hysterical.
- 6:46You know, you just don't see I mean it
- 6:47was
- 6:48typical Jets
- 6:50[ __ ] up. It was just terrible. But
- 6:52again, the game was insignificant, the
- 6:54season was insignificant. That's why it
- 6:55didn't make my top 10 because
- 6:58and ultimately it made no difference.
- 7:00They even if they were
- 7:02um
- 7:03winning the game, whatever, that season
- 7:05meant nothing. It was just it was
- 7:07nothing for them, so.
- 7:08>> The worst part of it is what it happened
- 7:10against the Patriots which made it even
- 7:11worse. Because the Patriots obviously
- 7:13were the dynasty of that era, so.
- 7:15>> the fake spike. It was against the
- 7:16Dolphins, you know, AFC rival.
- 7:18>> All right, before we get to your Well,
- 7:20let's hear your number 10 because we're
- 7:22not going to cover it in too much, but
- 7:23what's your number 10?
- 7:24>> Number 10 was low on the list for me
- 7:27because it happened before we were
- 7:28alive.
- 7:30And it was a I mean like not too many
- 7:32people will say it's a I mean yeah, it's
- 7:34a blunder because they ended up losing,
- 7:36but
- 7:37October 13th, 1960, game seven of the
- 7:401960 World Series.
- 7:43Yankees versus Pittsburgh Pirates, game
- 7:45tied 9-9, bottom of the ninth, second
- 7:48baseman Bill Mazeroski, who ends up
- 7:49making the Hall of Fame anyway, but
- 7:52uh
- 7:53gets up, bottom of the ninth, hits a
- 7:54home run off of Ralph Terry. Pittsburgh
- 7:56wins the World Series. Still to this
- 7:58day, the only game-winning home run to
- 8:01win a World Series.
- 8:02>> My number nine was the Marino spike. So,
- 8:06we covered that already. What's your
- 8:07number nine of the top 10 New York
- 8:09sports blunders?
- 8:10>> This one is is fairly recent. It's a
- 8:13game five of the 2024
- 8:15World Series, Yankees-Dodgers.
- 8:18Um the Yanks were down 3-1 in that
- 8:21series, but they had Gerrit Cole on the
- 8:23mound.
- 8:25They could have won that this game.
- 8:27They're They're up five nothing.
- 8:30Um you know, they win this game, it
- 8:31could be a different series. You don't
- 8:32know.
- 8:34Fly ball off of Tommy Edman's bat.
- 8:38We all know what happens. He drops the
- 8:39fly ball.
- 8:41Opens up the inning. They score five
- 8:43runs, tie the game. They go on to win
- 8:447-6. They win the World Series.
- 8:47And you know, this stuff just doesn't
- 8:48happen to the Yankees, but it happened
- 8:50to the Yankees, and it was just uh one
- 8:51of those epic collapses. And
- 8:53you know, I mean, listen, I'm not a
- 8:55Yankee hater, but it was kind of funny.
- 8:58>> You're a Yankee hater. Stop it now. Stop
- 9:00it.
- 9:02All right. So, this one should get under
- 9:03your skin. We're going to go to to
- 9:04number eight. We
- 9:06>> Oh, boy.
- 9:06>> So,
- 9:06>> All right. Let's hear it.
- 9:07>> number eight is is something I don't
- 9:09think it's going to make your list, but
- 9:10being a Mets fan,
- 9:13early in the 2000s, this one should make
- 9:16every Mets fans list. Because when I
- 9:18remember when this happened, me and you
- 9:20had a a long conversation and back and
- 9:22forth about this.
- 9:24And it's the Carlos Beltrán cold strike
- 9:26three in 2006.
- 9:29>> Beltrán at the plate, Carlos Beltrán. He
- 9:31is ready. So is Wainwright. The 0-2
- 9:35delivery.
- 9:36Curve struck him out looking. The
- 9:38Cardinals are going to Michigan to take
- 9:40on the Tigers.
- 9:41>> This did make my list.
- 9:42>> It did. Okay, so let me tell you
- 9:44something. We were
- 9:45>> on the phone. We were
- 9:46I was saying how do you not get a ball
- 9:49on the bat with two strikes? I
- 9:51understand that called strike three was
- 9:52a big breaking ball, but you know what?
- 9:53You got to swing.
- 9:55>> If I remember correctly, we were on the
- 9:57phone.
- 9:58All right, so with this one I mean I'll
- 10:00tell you where where where was it on my
- 10:01list? Let me tell you where it was on my
- 10:02list first and then actually for me,
- 10:05this was number two on the list.
- 10:07>> Oh, wow. That's
- 10:09>> It was devastating.
- 10:11It was devastating and I'll tell you
- 10:12why.
- 10:13It was number two on my list.
- 10:15It was game seven NLCS.
- 10:18The game was tight. The Mets were
- 10:21heavily favored, but Cardinals were not
- 10:24they were like barely into the playoffs,
- 10:25right?
- 10:26>> That was a great Mets team. Phenomenal
- 10:28Mets team.
- 10:29>> You can't even you can't even it was the
- 10:31greatest Mets team
- 10:33I mean it's up there with '86. That's
- 10:35how good they were, okay? They trumped
- 10:37the 2000 team. This team was phenomenal.
- 10:39>> Yeah. Oh, they had stars everywhere on
- 10:41that team.
- 10:41>> Yeah, they had pitching, fielding,
- 10:43batting, everything was great.
- 10:46It's one to one
- 10:48and we were on the phone like the whole
- 10:50throughout the whole game.
- 10:51Endy Chavez makes that catch, ends up
- 10:53throwing out the guy at first base,
- 10:55doubles him up. Mets get out of the
- 10:56inning.
- 10:57We go to the top of the ninth
- 11:00and freaking Yadier Molina hits that
- 11:02two-run home run. They go ahead three to
- 11:04one. And you were on the phone with me
- 11:06and you [ __ ] you're like, "That's it.
- 11:07I'm [ __ ] done." And you hung up the
- 11:09phone and you're like, "Fuck this team."
- 11:10You were like done.
- 11:12Bottom of the ninth comes.
- 11:14Mets load the bases. I get your ass on
- 11:16the phone. You're like, "I'm [ __ ]
- 11:17watching." You're going nuts. We're all
- 11:18going nuts cuz Beltrán's up. You're
- 11:20like,
- 11:21>> Yeah.
- 11:21>> Beltrán's going to come through, right?
- 11:23>> So so hold on. Before you go any
- 11:24further, let's not forget who Carlos
- 11:26Beltrán was prior to coming to the Mets.
- 11:29In Houston, he was Mr. Clutch in the
- 11:32playoffs.
- 11:33>> Modern day Mariano Rivera.
- 11:35>> I'm expecting something big here in this
- 11:37moment.
- 11:39>> Yeah, I mean
- 11:42I I expected him to come through minimal
- 11:45base hit, minimal.
- 11:47If not like a grand slam, cuz bases are
- 11:49loaded. You just you just feel
- 11:51electricity in the place, Shea's going
- 11:53nuts.
- 11:55And when Wright throws that [ __ ]
- 11:57ridiculous curveball, I'm and I can
- 11:58still see it.
- 11:59>> He never took the god damn bat off his
- 12:01shoulders. I'm like
- 12:02>> You It doesn't matter. You have to
- 12:03protect the plate with two strikes. You
- 12:05have to swing at that ball. There's no
- 12:08question about it. And he just watched
- 12:10it come in. What did you think was going
- 12:11to happen? I'm still pissed off about
- 12:13that. I'm not a huge Met fan anymore
- 12:15because I just can't deal with [ __ ] like
- 12:16that and how baseball's played nowadays.
- 12:18>> I said to you in the last podcast that
- 12:20the Cardinals have always been the Mets
- 12:22nemesis. And it's just another reason
- 12:24for me to hate the Cardinals because
- 12:25they always stick it to the Mets
- 12:26somehow. So, what's your number eight?
- 12:28That was mine.
- 12:29>> All right. So, eight. Let's see what I
- 12:31had as eight. I got to look for it
- 12:33because I got my ridiculous list here.
- 12:35Oh, this is one of your favorites, I
- 12:37believe.
- 12:381994 game five Eastern Conference
- 12:40finals, Indiana Pacers and the Knicks.
- 12:45Wow, this was a great game. I remember
- 12:47this one. This was the Knicks were
- 12:48trailing in the fourth quarter.
- 12:50I not the Knicks. No, I'm sorry. The
- 12:51Pacers were trailing in the fourth
- 12:53quarter. My bad. The Pacers were
- 12:55trailing in the fourth quarter.
- 12:57And the entire game Spike Lee's jawing
- 13:01at Reggie Miller.
- 13:03Reggie goes off for [ __ ] 25 points in
- 13:06that fourth quarter.
- 13:09He scores 39 for the game.
- 13:12Okay?
- 13:13And the infamous
- 13:15choke signal is born. It's the famous
- 13:19Reggie Miller choke game.
- 13:20Now, it it is number eight on my list.
- 13:23And this is the reason why.
- 13:25The Knicks won game six and game seven.
- 13:26So, it made no difference, but it is
- 13:28still infamous.
- 13:30It is still great. Reggie Miller's
- 13:32performance in that game was ridiculous.
- 13:33The Knicks should have had them beat.
- 13:35They didn't beat them.
- 13:36>> To me that's not a big blunder. It's not
- 13:38a big blunder considering they went on
- 13:39to win the series.
- 13:41>> they still went on to win the series. I
- 13:43was going to make an honorable mention,
- 13:45but
- 13:46>> It's a definitely a moment in New York
- 13:48sports moment which will never be
- 13:49forgotten, but still. All right, so I'm
- 13:51going to go to number seven and and my
- 13:53list is filled with sports moments. They
- 13:56may not be in the actual sporting event,
- 13:58okay, but one of the biggest blunders
- 14:01New York has ever seen that I think
- 14:03people have forgot about
- 14:04is Plaxico Burress shooting himself in
- 14:07the leg.
- 14:08>> Oh, wow.
- 14:09>> And getting going to jail after that
- 14:11because you forget the New York Giants
- 14:13just came off a Super Bowl victory.
- 14:15>> Former Super Bowl champion Plaxico
- 14:17Burress was formally indicted on gun
- 14:19charges Monday in New York City.
- 14:21>> And over the Patriots and he caught that
- 14:23big touchdown for them to win the game
- 14:25and then for him to go out, go to a
- 14:27nightclub, bring a bring a gun in New
- 14:30York
- 14:31without a carry license, get arrested.
- 14:33He went to prison and derailed his
- 14:35career. That to me is number seven. The
- 14:37one of the biggest blunders that didn't
- 14:39occur
- 14:40>> And who and
- 14:40>> on the court, on the field.
- 14:41>> Who knows? Who knows if they had him
- 14:43like what what could have happened,
- 14:44right? You know, they still had a decent
- 14:46team.
- 14:47>> Uh dude, he was he was a big time
- 14:48player, big time part of that team. He
- 14:50was such a match up nightmare nightmare
- 14:51cuz guy's like six five or six six,
- 14:54whatever. He was huge. So that was that
- 14:56was to me is my number seven. What's
- 14:57your number seven?
- 14:59>> Another one of these gut-wrenching ones
- 15:00for a fellow Knicks fan there.
- 15:02Game seven, 1995 Eastern Conference
- 15:05semi-finals, Knicks versus Pacers again.
- 15:09Knicks down 97-95.
- 15:11>> This is the big one. This is the big
- 15:13one.
- 15:13>> Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.
- 15:16Um they inbound the ball at half court.
- 15:19Right? And they have a play set up for
- 15:20Ewing. Ewing spins off the defender,
- 15:24has a clear path to the basket.
- 15:26You thinking we're tying the game at
- 15:28minimum. He gets fouled, we're going to
- 15:29we got a chance to win it, right?
- 15:31>> Starks cuts to the corner. Inbound to
- 15:33Ewing.
- 15:34Now at three,
- 15:35NOW AT TWO,
- 15:36EWING
- 15:40>> INSTEAD OF FREAKING DUNKING THE BALL,
- 15:43my man finger rolls it.
- 15:46Okay, gets cute with the ball.
- 15:48Hits the back of the rim.
- 15:50Pacers go on to win that game. They win
- 15:52the series and go on to the Eastern
- 15:54Conference Finals.
- 15:55>> So, let me tell you something. That is
- 15:57That is my number one sports blunder.
- 16:00>> Wow.
- 16:01>> You
- 16:01You don't under- You don't understand
- 16:03how much that haunted me.
- 16:05>> have been your year.
- 16:06>> For 40 years that has bothered me until
- 16:09the Knicks were able to just win it. You
- 16:10don't understand how big that was. The
- 16:12Knicks came off '94 going to the finals.
- 16:15You know, they played hard. John Starks
- 16:17went cold in in game seven. You all know
- 16:19the series. They come back the next year
- 16:20still under Pat Riley. They're favored
- 16:22again to come out of the East. Jordan
- 16:25had just come back off of baseball and
- 16:27he had lost to
- 16:28the Magic
- 16:30in that series
- 16:31uh in that year as well. So,
- 16:34Ewing's got to dunk that god damn ball.
- 16:36He misses it and I am just beside
- 16:38myself. Gut-wrenching. To me it That's
- 16:40That's haunted me forever until right
- 16:43now, you know.
- 16:44>> Yeah. I can see that.
- 16:47>> It has been such a long time for me to
- 16:49get over that.
- 16:50Like 1995 to 2026, we're talking about
- 16:5331 years.
- 16:54>> Yeah.
- 16:55They had a rough run in that the late
- 16:57'90s.
- 16:58>> So, that was my number one, man. And
- 17:00that's only your number seven, which is
- 17:02wild to me.
- 17:03>> Oh, wait. It gets better. Yeah.
- 17:05>> Oh, great. So, let's go to number six.
- 17:07Number six again another New York Knicks
- 17:09moment. It's the one I touched on
- 17:10before. It's Reggie Miller scoring eight
- 17:13points in nine seconds and the Knicks
- 17:15lose that game one.
- 17:17>> Game that's nearly 60 fouls called.
- 17:19Actually, that is short of the record
- 17:20for both teams in a playoff game.
- 17:22Miller for three, and he got it.
- 17:25Reggie Miller with a clutch tray, and
- 17:27it's 105-102.
- 17:30And a steal! Miller retreats to THE
- 17:32THREE-POINT LINE AND HITS AGAIN!
- 17:34>> I think they still won that series. It's
- 17:36either a '94 or a '95. That that's the
- 17:38thing. I don't remember what year it
- 17:40was. That's why I asked you before.
- 17:42But I think this the Knicks still went
- 17:43on to win that series.
- 17:44>> I remember that game like it was
- 17:45yesterday. That was the most ridiculous
- 17:47thing I ever He He went off. That last
- 17:49like 10 seconds of the game was crazy.
- 17:51>> He He hits He hits a shot. Knicks go to
- 17:54inbound the ball underneath the basket,
- 17:56and they're pressing, and for some
- 17:58goddamn reason Anthony Mason, God rest
- 18:00his soul, throws the ball to Reggie
- 18:02Miller, who then steps out behind the
- 18:04arc and nails a three to tie the game.
- 18:07It was just
- 18:08in true typical Knicks fashion,
- 18:12gut-wrenching. So, to me, that's my
- 18:13number six. And Reggie Miller, again,
- 18:15he's
- 18:16Honestly, I think my Michael Jordan to
- 18:19me is the number one guy I cannot stand,
- 18:21but he was the goat, so I get it.
- 18:23>> Reggie Miller was the biggest nemesis of
- 18:25the New York Knicks.
- 18:26>> If he's not two, he's one A, let's put
- 18:28it that way. So, what's your number six?
- 18:30>> though. The Knicks beat him though.
- 18:31>> All right. So, what's your number six?
- 18:34>> All right. My number six, to steal a
- 18:35quote from the the great Joe Benigno,
- 18:38"Oh, the pain."
- 18:39June 2nd, 1993.
- 18:42Game five, Eastern Conference Finals.
- 18:45New York Knicks versus Chicago Bulls.
- 18:49Series tied two to two.
- 18:5120 seconds left on the clock.
- 18:53The Bulls lead 95-94.
- 18:56Final five seconds. Ewing dishes the
- 18:59ball to Charles Smith,
- 19:00who in turn puts up four
- 19:04squared-up shots to the basket.
- 19:06>> Plenty of time on the shot clock, down
- 19:08to 10.
- 19:09Ewing for Smith.
- 19:11SMITH.
- 19:17>> AND CONTINUES TO miss on each shot.
- 19:21Causing them to lose that game and go
- 19:23down 3-2 in the series.
- 19:26And that game went on to be known as the
- 19:29Charles Smith Memorial.
- 19:31>> I I felt so bad for Charles Smith
- 19:33because you're right, we should have won
- 19:34the game but at the same time it it was
- 19:36against Michael Jordan and the Bulls but
- 19:37I felt so bad for the guy. Yeah, but it
- 19:39was Charles Smith but but still.
- 19:42>> Listen, you win that game, you never
- 19:45know man. You go up 3-2 on the Bulls,
- 19:47you never [ __ ] know.
- 19:49That's that game that game was like
- 19:52game four
- 19:54against the Spurs.
- 19:56They miss that and the Spurs come back
- 19:58and they they they win, right? And
- 20:00they're tied 2-2.
- 20:01That's a different series.
- 20:03>> Let me ask you a question. We we've
- 20:05we've seen all the bad [ __ ] already
- 20:07that's been happening to the New York
- 20:08Knicks. Now that finally something good
- 20:10has happened, do we do we get like a
- 20:11couple of good things in a row? Do we
- 20:12get another championship? Do we start
- 20:14having things go our way? We had that OG
- 20:15tip-in that's to me you know, I said
- 20:17before that that'll be number one in the
- 20:19greatest New York sports moments of all
- 20:20time but I'm hoping we get more great
- 20:22Knicks moments now.
- 20:23>> I feel like
- 20:26they have to go back-to-back now because
- 20:31it's only going to get harder now.
- 20:33Giannis is now in Miami. Boston's going
- 20:35to be better.
- 20:36>> [ __ ] Giannis.
- 20:38I feel like the curse has been You see
- 20:40all these bad things? You see all these
- 20:42bad things? Like the curse is lifted.
- 20:44It's lifted. It's gone.
- 20:45>> And don't don't sleep on Brooklyn, man.
- 20:46Now we got Julius Randle.
- 20:47>> Stop it. Stop it. I love Julius but stop
- 20:50it.
- 20:50>> The draft is tonight, too. So,
- 20:52we'll see.
- 20:54>> All right, so
- 20:56let's get into uh number five now. We've
- 20:59covered one half of the list. Let's get
- 21:00into number five. Again, my list is an
- 21:02epic blunder here and it's not something
- 21:05that occurred on a field, on a court.
- 21:08This is might be one of the biggest
- 21:09blunders. I'm putting it at number five,
- 21:11but we're going to go back to the New
- 21:12York Jets. It'll only because I'm a huge
- 21:13Jets fan and I they've caused me so much
- 21:15misery over the years, just like the
- 21:16Knicks.
- 21:17But it's the New York Jets taking Kyle
- 21:20Brady over Warren Sapp in the NFL draft.
- 21:24>> Oh, wow. It's a shock.
- 21:27>> With the ninth pick in the first round,
- 21:30the New York Jets select tight end from
- 21:32Penn State, Kyle Brady.
- 21:38>> Now,
- 21:40watching the NFL draft for me as a kid,
- 21:43ever since I started following football,
- 21:44is one of the greatest things that I do.
- 21:46Every year, I sit down and I watch it.
- 21:47It always used to be at Radio City Music
- 21:49Hall in New York. I always wanted to go,
- 21:51never got the chance. But every year
- 21:53watching the New York Jets draft is like
- 21:55something out of a freaking movie
- 21:58because there's epic blunders after epic
- 22:00blunders, surprises, trade-ups,
- 22:02trade-downs. And this is not the first
- 22:04draft pick that's going to be on my
- 22:05list. Okay, we'll get to the next one
- 22:07later. But Kyle Brady was on to do
- 22:10nothing as a New York Jet, right? Came
- 22:12out of Penn State, supposed to be a good
- 22:14blocker, decent catching the football.
- 22:16But then you have Warren Sapp who goes
- 22:17on to become a one of the best defensive
- 22:19tackles in the National Football League,
- 22:21a Hall of Famer. The best He came up
- 22:23with a three technique because of Warren
- 22:26Sapp. Like he defined that position.
- 22:28And imagine if Warren Sapp had been
- 22:30drafted by the New York Jets, what that
- 22:31team could have become because guess
- 22:33what? After the fact,
- 22:35Bill Parcells came in.
- 22:37>> Well, I mean, look, if I knew this was
- 22:39going to be listing bad draft picks, uh
- 22:42we could do a whole pod on New Jersey
- 22:43Nets and {slash} Brooklyn Nets draft
- 22:45picks because I mean, you think the Jets
- 22:47made bad picks?
- 22:50Dude, I mean,
- 22:52I
- 22:53None of these teams make good picks,
- 22:54man. The Knicks
- 22:54>> There's there's also talk about the
- 22:55Knicks picks also, man.
- 22:57>> They're they're all They're all still
- 22:58New York blunders. I mean, this is a big
- 23:00blunder. You're taking one player over a
- 23:02Hall of Fame player.
- 23:04It's a blunder.
- 23:05>> I mean, come on, man. You got The list
- 23:07is long for that, man. The Nets took
- 23:09what, Sam Bowie against the Michael
- 23:11Jordan? Like, come on, man. Like
- 23:13>> I got it, but you don't you don't see
- 23:15that pick get played over and over and
- 23:17over on SportsCenter. You don't see it
- 23:19all the time every day ever since they
- 23:20referenced the New York Jets. Anytime
- 23:22they cover the draft, they always show
- 23:24that pick. It's just a horrible moment
- 23:26and this one more like I said I'll talk
- 23:27about.
- 23:28>> Was he a terrible player?
- 23:30>> Yeah, he didn't do anything. He was he
- 23:32never got a second contract with the New
- 23:34York Jets, let's put it that way. So,
- 23:36what is your number five moment?
- 23:37>> All right, so my number five is an
- 23:39actual sports moment. Um
- 23:42September 30th, 2007.
- 23:45Mets-Marlins
- 23:47last game of the season.
- 23:50Um
- 23:51it's uh final game of the season, Tom
- 23:53Glavine on the mound, Mets need to win
- 23:55to get in.
- 23:57He continues to implode
- 24:00in the first inning and let up [ __ ]
- 24:02seven runs in the first inning. Seven
- 24:05runs and five hits and I'm I'm there.
- 24:06Last game of the season, I'm there,
- 24:08[ __ ] losing my [ __ ] Like, you I
- 24:10couldn't believe they didn't have Pedro
- 24:11warming up in the [ __ ] bullpen just
- 24:13on standby just in case somebody
- 24:15imploded. They didn't have anybody
- 24:16ready.
- 24:17It was the most ridiculous and it's the
- 24:19[ __ ] Marlins. They go on to lose
- 24:22eight to [ __ ] one.
- 24:25And
- 24:27that concluded the one of the most epic
- 24:30collapses in MLB history.
- 24:32>> But, Tom Glavine is one of the worst
- 24:34Mets of all time. Like, you expected so
- 24:36much more out of Tom Glavine and he was
- 24:38he he was like Frank Viola. Remember
- 24:40Frank Viola? Same thing. Awesome before
- 24:42he on Queens, phenomenal, comes to the
- 24:44Mets, he was terrible.
- 24:45>> No, his first year on the Mets uh Viola
- 24:48was like a 20-game winner. The first
- 24:49season
- 24:50>> He won 20 games, but if you watch those
- 24:51games, he was always in trouble, never
- 24:54pitched well. It was wasn't the same
- 24:55player.
- 24:56>> So, then Tom Glavine wasn't terrible for
- 24:58the Mets, but he wasn't the same guy he
- 25:00was in Atlanta. But on the flip side,
- 25:04when he was in Atlanta,
- 25:06I don't know if you remember this, but
- 25:07the the umpires used to call the [ __ ]
- 25:09strikes like a foot outside back in the
- 25:11day.
- 25:12And they weren't doing that. Once he got
- 25:14to the Mets, they weren't [ __ ]
- 25:15calling that [ __ ] which is like
- 25:17phenomenal. When he was on the Braves,
- 25:18they were calling it. They're not
- 25:19calling it when he's on the Mets.
- 25:20>> It's every generation of It's every
- 25:23generation of Mets signing a big name
- 25:25pitcher. You ready?
- 25:27I'm going to go with the first Frank
- 25:29Viola, Tom Glavine, Mike [ __ ]
- 25:31Hampton. Same [ __ ]
- 25:33>> Mike Hampton was
- 25:34>> Same [ __ ]
- 25:35>> No.
- 25:35>> He was He He was He He came to the Mets
- 25:37He He wasn't dominant like he was, you
- 25:39know, when he was with the What was it?
- 25:40Colorado where he was where where where
- 25:42he was?
- 25:42>> He went to Colorado. That's the thing.
- 25:44He He was dominant and he was great in
- 25:46the playoffs in 2000, and then he
- 25:47bounced and went to Colorado. I mean, if
- 25:49you want Pedro
- 25:51was hurt.
- 25:52>> He's the only guy.
- 25:52>> [ __ ]
- 25:53>> But
- 25:55>> Uh Scherzer, Verlander, you name it.
- 25:58They
- 25:58>> But it's later. That's way later on.
- 26:00>> Dave Magadan? Dave Magadan?
- 26:02>> Garbage. Garbage.
- 26:03Dude, Pedro Martinez
- 26:06was at the end of his career. He didn't
- 26:07He didn't have the get-go. But let me
- 26:09tell you something. Pedro Martinez is
- 26:10the greatest pitcher of all time in my
- 26:12>> Yeah, makes sense.
- 26:12>> I was feverish. Not just because
- 26:15Not just because he the ERA Look at
- 26:18Pedro's ERA rate throughout his career.
- 26:20Even at the end of his [ __ ] career,
- 26:21the guy is just the mentality.
- 26:24>> Pedro when he came to the Mets that
- 26:25first year he was with the Mets, he was
- 26:27great. He just got hurt.
- 26:29He was great. He was great for the Mets.
- 26:30I don't think he was bad. It's just like
- 26:32They just don't They don't have luck.
- 26:35They sign these guys, they just don't
- 26:36like Johan comes out, [ __ ] awesome
- 26:38the first year, throws a no-hitter, he
- 26:39[ __ ] he's done for the rest of his
- 26:40career. He's done.
- 26:41>> I know that that's another guy. They
- 26:43line them up. Mets go out and get a big
- 26:45name The only guy the Mets went to go
- 26:46out and actually really perform was Al
- 26:48Leiter. But Al Leiter wasn't the big
- 26:49star name, but he was a really good
- 26:51pitcher.
- 26:51>> Al Leiter was great, man. Aliter was
- 26:53awesome. Same
- 26:54>> I said he was the only guy that he
- 26:56wasn't like a superstar like these other
- 26:57guys, but he was a really good pitcher.
- 26:58>> He was a solid two. He wasn't an ace. He
- 27:01was a solid two.
- 27:03>> he came to the Mets and became a
- 27:05superstar in my opinion. That's how good
- 27:06he was. Let's get to number four. The
- 27:08number four, I'm sticking with the New
- 27:10York Mets and it's again another off the
- 27:12field
- 27:13blunder. But this is a big one. It's
- 27:14still haunting to the Mets to this day
- 27:16and now they celebrate this day.
- 27:17>> Can I guess what it is? Can I guess?
- 27:18>> Yeah, go for it. What do you think?
- 27:20>> Is it the Bobby Ojeda Bobby Ojeda with
- 27:23the [ __ ] the the the hedge trimmer or
- 27:24whatever the [ __ ] it was?
- 27:26>> No. We could I didn't even think of
- 27:27that. It's the
- 27:30It's the right name, but it's the wrong
- 27:31Bobby. It's the Bobby Bonilla contract
- 27:34blunder.
- 27:35The Wilpons
- 27:37blundering the Bobby Bonilla contract
- 27:40and now the Mets are still paying $1
- 27:42million every year.
- 27:43>> I think they could suit him up. They
- 27:44they could use him right now.
- 27:48>> You want to talk about another horrible
- 27:50signing? Bobby Bonilla. For the I
- 27:52remember his first game he had two two
- 27:53home runs. I was like, "Oh my god, the
- 27:55Mets are going to be awesome." And then
- 27:56he's utter trash after that. And the
- 27:57Mets are still The Mets are still
- 27:58paying.
- 27:59>> first time they signed him. They're
- 28:01paying him on the second time they
- 28:03[ __ ] signed him.
- 28:04>> That's even worse.
- 28:06>> [ __ ] up the first one, they [ __ ] up,
- 28:07they signed him, and then they're going
- 28:08to go back and sign him again and pay
- 28:10him for the rest of his life?
- 28:11What the [ __ ] is wrong with this team,
- 28:12man?
- 28:13>> Those are the Wilpons, but they were the
- 28:14worst owners in I want to say I want to
- 28:17say in sports, right?
- 28:18They I don't think there's anybody worse
- 28:20than That's a podcast we could do is the
- 28:21top 10 worst owners in sports. We could
- 28:24do that one one day.
- 28:25>> Oh, yeah.
- 28:26>> What's number four? What's your number
- 28:28four?
- 28:29>> All right, sticking with the those good
- 28:31old New York Mets cuz they're they're
- 28:34So, we did we did uh we did '06.
- 28:37We did '07. That was number five.
- 28:40'06 was my number two.
- 28:41But number four is '08.
- 28:44Final game of the season, final game at
- 28:47Shea Stadium, and I was there once again
- 28:50to witness
- 28:52the Mets
- 28:54collapsing once again. Needing to win on
- 28:57the last game of the season to force a
- 28:59play-in game for the playoffs.
- 29:02They lose again to the lowly [ __ ]
- 29:04Marlins 4-2 on the last game of the
- 29:07season to close out Shea Stadium in epic
- 29:10fashion. The most This And then what
- 29:12even pissed me off even more
- 29:14is that the Phillies had to win so that
- 29:17the Mets were eliminated. Then the
- 29:19Phillies, of course, won, and it was
- 29:21worse because of the [ __ ] Phillies. I
- 29:23hate the Phillies. I can't stand the
- 29:24Phillies. Phillies win, they get into
- 29:26the [ __ ] World Series that year.
- 29:28[ __ ] Mets.
- 29:30Unbelievable.
- 29:32>> By the way, so everybody out there
- 29:33listening, we both went to college in
- 29:34Philadelphia, so maybe you understand a
- 29:37little bit more why he hates
- 29:39the Phillies. All right, so we're
- 29:40getting into the top three now, believe
- 29:41it or not. So to me, this is one that I
- 29:43don't know if it made your list. We only
- 29:45have three spots to go, but this is
- 29:46another pivotal New York Knicks moment
- 29:48where I thought they were going to We
- 29:49were really good team
- 29:51going to go through the playoffs,
- 29:52getting ready to play the Bulls, and
- 29:55in 1997
- 29:58PJ Brown and Miami Heat PJ Brown throws
- 30:02Charlie Ward during a free throw towards
- 30:05the end of that game,
- 30:06and Patrick Ewing and Larry Johnson
- 30:09leave the bench.
- 30:10>> Tim Hardaway at the line. Watch PJ Brown
- 30:12and Charlie Ward. Pete PJ later on said
- 30:14he thought Ward was going for his knees.
- 30:16So I'm going to throw him on the floor
- 30:18on top of photographers.
- 30:20Could you imagine if Eugene Amos was at
- 30:22the bottom of this pile? 1-800 lawyers,
- 30:25hello.
- 30:26Pat Riley, Jeff Van Gundy getting
- 30:28involved, making sure no one's going to
- 30:30get suspended for the next game.
- 30:32>> And unfortunately, they got suspended.
- 30:34Patrick Ewing got suspended for game
- 30:36six. Larry Johnson got suspended for
- 30:38game seven, and the Knicks go on to lose
- 30:40both of those games. It cost them the
- 30:43series and it this is the year the Bulls
- 30:45were won 70 games, okay?
- 30:47One one of the best teams in NBA
- 30:49history, but if you go back there in the
- 30:50regular season, the Knicks and the Bulls
- 30:51played four times. The Knicks won two
- 30:54and the Bulls won two. I said to this
- 30:56day that if the Knicks won that Miami
- 30:58series, they had a real good shot of
- 31:00beating the Bulls that year because they
- 31:02played real tough four close games and
- 31:05[ __ ] P.J. Brown throws Charlie Ward
- 31:09and you know we all we all know what
- 31:10happens
- 31:11after that, but I will say this, Miami
- 31:13went on to win that series and get swept
- 31:15by the Bulls in the Eastern Conference
- 31:17Finals, but that to me still to this day
- 31:19really pisses me off.
- 31:21>> Yeah, P.J. Brown is a dirty player.
- 31:24Um
- 31:25but that you know what, it just it goes
- 31:27to show you, man.
- 31:28Over the years the Knicks have just not
- 31:30been the friends of the officials of the
- 31:32NBA.
- 31:34Uh I mean like I'm not a Knicks fan, but
- 31:36they there is some bias. There's
- 31:38definitely some bias.
- 31:39>> And do you think it's because Ewing the
- 31:41the whole controversy about the envelope
- 31:43being cold and them getting Patrick
- 31:45Ewing? Do you think maybe that has
- 31:46anything to do with it? They said, you
- 31:47know what, let's [ __ ] the Knicks for the
- 31:49next 20 to 30 years.
- 31:51I'm just saying.
- 31:53>> I mean like how about how about
- 31:54how about [ __ ] San Antonio getting
- 31:56[ __ ] David Robinson, Tim Duncan and
- 31:58then [ __ ] Wendy
- 32:00>> Are you kidding me, dude?
- 32:01>> Exactly. Same thing. Well, the year
- 32:03before Tim Duncan David Robinson got
- 32:05hurt that year, so he was out basically
- 32:08the whole year and they were horrible
- 32:09and then they got the number one pick
- 32:10and they drafted Tim Duncan, fine.
- 32:12I agree with you though, I think a part
- 32:14of it plays into that, but what's your
- 32:15number three?
- 32:17>> All right,
- 32:18uh we're going to go
- 32:21November
- 32:234th, 2001.
- 32:25Post 9/11.
- 32:28We're in a post 9/11 world, right?
- 32:31Game seven of the World Series,
- 32:32Diamondbacks versus the Yankees.
- 32:34Right?
- 32:36You got the Yankees winning the game two
- 32:39to one.
- 32:41We got bottom of the ninth in Arizona.
- 32:46Diamondbacks get a lead off hit from
- 32:49Mark Grace. Gets on base.
- 32:51They proceed to get the next guy on.
- 32:54And then
- 32:56I believe somebody bunted them over and
- 32:57it was second and third. And Tony Womack
- 33:01comes up.
- 33:02And at up to this point Mariano Rivera
- 33:05was flawless in post season history.
- 33:08Flawless. And it's Mariano, okay?
- 33:13He lets up a base hit to Tony freaking
- 33:15Womack.
- 33:17Diamondbacks tie that game.
- 33:19Okay?
- 33:21Next guy up, I believe gets hit by a
- 33:23pitch. They load the bases. Luis
- 33:25Gonzalez comes up. Now you got Tim
- 33:27McCarver, the legendary Tim McCarver on
- 33:29the call.
- 33:30And the Yanks bring in the infield. And
- 33:32Tim McCarver goes, "I don't know if
- 33:34that's the right decision, especially
- 33:36with Mariano on the mound."
- 33:38This is word for word what he says.
- 33:40He's the type of the way he pitches, he
- 33:43busts guys in with that cutter. I spec-
- 33:46You go I think he said especially
- 33:47lefties. And he's like they tend to hit
- 33:49these bloop singles off of him.
- 33:53Pitches to Luis Gonzalez. I think it was
- 33:54a 1-0 count. Luis Gonzalez saws off a
- 33:58pitch from Mariano.
- 33:59Flares it just over the head of Derek
- 34:02Jeter. Winning run comes in.
- 34:05>> 2-2 bottom of the ninth.
- 34:07Game seven of the World Series. Bases
- 34:09loaded.
- 34:14FLOATER! CENTER FIELD! THE DIAMONDBACKS
- 34:18ARE WORLD CHAMPIONS!
- 34:20>> AND the Diamondbacks win the World
- 34:21Series. Now, if the Yankees had won,
- 34:24that would have been four straight.
- 34:26You're talking about dynasties. That
- 34:28game
- 34:29This is This is why I have it so high,
- 34:31number three. That game for me
- 34:34ended that Yankee dynasty run.
- 34:36>> Let me ask you a question. Who's the
- 34:38blunder on? Joe Joe Torre or you saying
- 34:40it's Mariano?
- 34:42>> No, it's Mariano.
- 34:44Dude, I got to
- 34:45>> know. I feel like it should be I I feel
- 34:47like it should be on Joe Torre.
- 34:49Well, if you get to move the infield in
- 34:50or anything
- 34:51>> You got the Oh, the infield. Uh
- 34:54Well, it Listen, it was only one out.
- 34:56There's only one out.
- 34:57>> Yeah, but so if he jams in and they put
- 34:58the infield at regular depth and Jeter
- 35:00catches the ball, everybody stays and
- 35:02now Mariano has has a chance to face a
- 35:04batter with two out or you know, you can
- 35:06get out any base.
- 35:08>> I mean, Luis Gonzalez I think at that
- 35:09point is Chris still fast runner, right?
- 35:12He hits the ground ball There's not
- 35:13There There might be a chance he legs
- 35:15that out and they don't and they don't
- 35:16get the double play.
- 35:18So, if you have to you have to go
- 35:19infield in there.
- 35:21>> I don't know, man. To me to me I'm I'm
- 35:23I'm not going to blame Mariano Rivera
- 35:25for that one. I'll blame Joe Torre. I
- 35:27get what you're saying. The guy is you
- 35:29know, the greatest of all time when it
- 35:30comes to closers. He's probably top
- 35:32what? 10 pitchers of all time I would
- 35:34say. You know, that's debatable. All
- 35:36right, so this again, number two is a
- 35:39big moment in New York Jets history that
- 35:41people don't talk about enough, but for
- 35:42me, you know, this is 1983.
- 35:46And when we talk about a draft class
- 35:48that has
- 35:50multiple Hall of Famers at the
- 35:51quarterback position,
- 35:53it's to me that this should This should
- 35:56be number one on any Jets fans
- 35:58>> God.
- 35:59>> list. There's no question in my mind
- 36:01because you're skipping over a
- 36:02generational player and a generational
- 36:04talent at that time and I still today is
- 36:07the greatest passer in NFL history. He
- 36:10may not be the greatest quarterback, but
- 36:11the greatest thrower of the football to
- 36:14this day in NFL history and this number
- 36:17two is the New York Jets drafting Ken
- 36:19O'Brien over Dan Marino.
- 36:21>> Jets take the first round selection,
- 36:24quarterback,
- 36:27Ken O'Brien of California Davis.
- 36:31>> In 1983, like
- 36:33Dan Marino coming out of Pitt
- 36:35everybody thought was the man. He ends
- 36:38up going after obviously John Elway, Jim
- 36:41Kelly, and then Ken O'Brien.
- 36:44He goes after to the Dolphins. But if
- 36:46you go look at back coming into that
- 36:48draft, everybody knew John Elway was
- 36:49going to go number one, but there was
- 36:51questions where he was going to play
- 36:53baseball and that's why, you know, the
- 36:54Broncos traded with the Colts and got
- 36:57that pick. But Dan Marino coming in, I
- 36:59think I thought everybody for the most
- 37:01part thought Dan Marino was the best
- 37:03quarterback in that draft. And for the
- 37:04New York Jets
- 37:06to bypass him and take Ken O'Brien, it's
- 37:10it's a disgrace. I don't know how to
- 37:12I'm not I'm not going to kill Ken
- 37:13O'Brien. He did he he had a solid career
- 37:15for the New York Jets, didn't have an
- 37:16offensive line, never really got a
- 37:18chance. Good thrower of the football,
- 37:20don't get me wrong. He had some weapons
- 37:21on at the receiver position, but when
- 37:23you have Dan Marino out there who's gone
- 37:25on to do
- 37:27so many things in the NFL, holds so many
- 37:28passing records at that point. I
- 37:30remember watching games where he'd be
- 37:31throwing for 400 and change against Drew
- 37:33Bledsoe who's throwing for 400 and
- 37:35change, doing things that the
- 37:37quarterbacks are doing now in 2026 that
- 37:39that you know, he was doing back in the
- 37:411980s and early 90s. So
- 37:43it's an epic blunder. I had to put it at
- 37:45number two and
- 37:46only thing I put at number one was
- 37:48Dwayne's finger roll because it caused
- 37:49me so much freaking misery. So that is
- 37:52my list. Dan Marino not coming to the
- 37:54New York Jets.
- 37:55>> So, let me comment on that. Marino
- 37:58coming out in '83.
- 38:01I mean, I've seen so many interviews on
- 38:02this, but he was the most polished
- 38:04passer
- 38:06to come out of college.
- 38:07This guy he he he starts he started
- 38:10halfway through the season in '83. In
- 38:12'84 takes him to the [ __ ] well,
- 38:14again, to the Super Bowl. But um
- 38:19Yeah, I mean, yeah, I didn't even think
- 38:21of of being a blunder like that cuz like
- 38:23we were talking about before.
- 38:24>> for
- 38:25>> You can have a podcast on just draft
- 38:27pick blunders because
- 38:29all these teams, be it the the Knicks,
- 38:33the Nets, the the Rangers.
- 38:36>> The way I look at this, you talked about
- 38:37it before how it changed the Yankees
- 38:39fortunes to when Mariano gave up that
- 38:41hit.
- 38:42>> Yeah.
- 38:42>> That literally set the Jets back another
- 38:4510 years. That's how I look at it. Like
- 38:47it just they they made such a mistake
- 38:50that it sent the franchise back another
- 38:52years. And then what did we go through
- 38:54after it? Went through the [ __ ] fake
- 38:55spike. Went through the butt fumble we
- 38:56covered. There's so many other bad
- 38:57moments because of that pick. Jets draft
- 39:00Dan Marino, God knows what happens.
- 39:02Maybe you get to the Jets to Super Bowl.
- 39:03We don't know. That's why I had to put
- 39:04it on the list.
- 39:05>> Yeah.
- 39:06And the Jets didn't have like a bad
- 39:07team.
- 39:09Now that weapons are off to his credit,
- 39:11Ken O'Brien wasn't terrible. He was a
- 39:12good, you know, he's a good passer.
- 39:14>> No, but he's not Dan Marino. Stop it.
- 39:16He's not He's not Dan Marino. Yeah, he's
- 39:17not Dan Marino.
- 39:18So we we covered your number two. So
- 39:20what is your number one moment? We said
- 39:22number one is Ewing's finger roll. So
- 39:23this is it. Your number one. What is it?
- 39:25>> I I can't believe you you forgot this.
- 39:28And as a Mets fan, 2004 ALCS
- 39:33collapse by the New York Yankees.
- 39:36>> 1918 season.
- 39:39And here it is. Ground ball to second.
- 39:41Race. The Boston Red Sox have won the
- 39:44pennant.
- 39:46>> They're up three games to none on the
- 39:48Boston Red Sox. Okay. Commandingly.
- 39:52Commandingly
- 39:54in the series.
- 39:56And they proceed to lose
- 39:58four straight games. It's never been
- 40:01done before. It's never going to happen
- 40:03again. They lost four straight games to
- 40:07the Boston Red Sox. And the Boston Red
- 40:09Sox went on and won a World Series for
- 40:12the first time
- 40:14in like God knows how long. It was like
- 40:16what, 70 something years, whatever it
- 40:18was.
- 40:19>> And they broke the curse.
- 40:20>> Seems. And it broke the curse, the curse
- 40:21of the Bambino. That to me
- 40:24is the ultimate
- 40:27collapse, the ultimate blunder.
- 40:31It's the ultimate uh faux pas
- 40:34for for sports. It's how do you let this
- 40:37team that you've dominated for decades,
- 40:40you've kept them like you've stepped on
- 40:41them constantly, and they finally come
- 40:44through?
- 40:45And
- 40:46you know, it was
- 40:49you know, you know, like they just they
- 40:51were just defeated. And then just to
- 40:53watch all the Boston fans in New York
- 40:56celebrating was just like unbelievable.
- 40:58It was just like something you'll never
- 41:00see again.
- 41:01>> For me, you know what it is? It's when
- 41:03you're not a fan of a team and they
- 41:04something like that happens. I remember
- 41:06rooting for the Red Sox cuz I don't like
- 41:08the Yankees. I'm a Mets fan, so like I
- 41:09don't I don't I never I usually don't
- 41:11root against the Yankees, but
- 41:13>> I'll tell you what it was about these
- 41:15about the Yankees and and
- 41:17the those late '90s Yankees, early 2000s
- 41:21Yankees, right?
- 41:22It's not that you hated the Yankees.
- 41:25It's you hated the Yankee fan.
- 41:27The they're just the bragging and the
- 41:30talking of the trash and oh, your team
- 41:32well, what you win? Oh, 1969, 1986. Oh,
- 41:35we got 27 rings. Like, dude, come on.
- 41:40I mean, the Mets might be bad, but
- 41:41they're not 2004 ALCS collapse bad,
- 41:44okay?
- 41:45That will always be number one for me.
- 41:47>> Because they have 27 World Series,
- 41:50because they have all that, they could
- 41:51they could, you know, laugh about it
- 41:53now. But at the end of the day, like,
- 41:55you know what? They let the cat out of
- 41:58the bag. They let the, you know, they
- 41:59let that happen.
- 42:00>> a couple. Yeah.
- 42:02>> That's why that's why I say to you is
- 42:04like with the Knicks, especially, same
- 42:06kind of moment. The Knicks have always
- 42:07been down. They've always been down.
- 42:08Now, all of a sudden, they got one. So,
