- 0:05Hi Jason here, and you're listening to the slippery slope.
- 0:09So just wanted to discuss what happened on the weekend
- 0:12regarding Hill soul, and I've got to say I was, it was, it was
- 0:18quite entertaining, it was a little funny to see some of the
- 0:20reactions that were coming out from musicians and, and pubs and
- 0:24clubs and festivals about all of this.
- 0:27But, and I think it's just Another for Hillsong was just
- 0:31another bad headline. I'll be up front, I have gone to
- 0:36several Hillsong conference has. When I was when I was much much
- 0:40younger back I think when it was kind of around that time when it
- 0:43first started maybe the late 90s early 2000s.
- 0:47I went to several of them and I have been to Hillsong Church
- 0:51couple of times a long time ago, probably about 10 years ago
- 0:56there. It's it's not somewhere I would
- 0:58attend anymore. And I don't want to bag them at
- 1:03all. However, just my opinion, I
- 1:05don't think he'll song ID best examples of Christian Church.
- 1:09However, in Australia, they are the undoubtedly, the best known
- 1:15brand for church. So getting onto this headline
- 1:20here, from the guardian, says New South Wales.
- 1:21Premier shocked by footage of Hillsong members, dancing.
- 1:24And singing at Youth Camp, can't believe you shocked by It
- 1:28Anyway. The new supplies premiere, Yeah,
- 1:30it's Dominic parrot at says he was incredibly disappointed to
- 1:35see the footage of young, Hillsong parishioners dancing
- 1:38and singing to music and the church could be fined.
- 1:40If found to have breached the state's covid Public Health
- 1:42order. There's rules aren't there for
- 1:45the sake of it? Parotid said on Friday morning.
- 1:49I'll scroll down further on parotid said his expectation was
- 1:53that if there was a breach by Hillsong I find should be
- 1:55issued. Now I've already found that this
- 1:59Hillsong avoided the fine and all go on to that later on but
- 2:04it continues on saying on Thursday night the church was
- 2:07ordered by New South Wales Health to immediately.
- 2:09Stop singing and dancing at the Youth Camp after footage of
- 2:12Youth, parishioners dancing to music sparked wide.
- 2:15Widespread anger over certain exemptions for religious.
- 2:19Photos and videos posted on Hillsong social media accounts.
- 2:23This is the problem. They got busted because they
- 2:27themselves, put up the footage on their own social media
- 2:30accounts. So the put it up over the past
- 2:33two days, show crowds of people singing without masks during
- 2:36services and dancing to pop music.
- 2:38That was non devotional. So they can't even stick to the
- 2:41rules properly that have been laid out the camp, which is
- 2:44aimed at 15, to 17 year. Olds is due to finish on
- 2:47Saturday, That was last Saturday so singing and dancing.
- 2:51At a major recreational facility is in breach of the public
- 2:55health order. So, Brad Hazard and user fills.
- 2:58Help Minister said, while the order does not apply to
- 3:01religious Services it does apply to Major Recreation facilities.
- 3:07And this event is clearly in breach of both the spirit and
- 3:11intent of the order which is in place to help keep the community
- 3:14safe. Now, I will say, although I
- 3:16don't agree with any of these orders, whether it The church or
- 3:19pubs and clubs all especially the festival's.
- 3:22I think there should be allowed, but, you know, whether we like
- 3:27it or not, they've made these Health orders.
- 3:29They've got these rules out there.
- 3:30No singing. And dancing and get they've,
- 3:37they've kind of the using a using exemption that's given for
- 3:41churches for the way they described.
- 3:44As for specifically for a church scene, we're in a church.
- 3:48You would stand Stand up and sing to a band at the front.
- 3:51You wouldn't be moving around but these fellows decided no no
- 3:53will use it for a youth camp. And quite frankly, the festival
- 3:57looks more like a while. The Youth Camp looks more like a
- 3:59festival rather than a church service.
- 4:02And this is where they've gotten Strife.
- 4:05So New South Wales police on Thursday, issued a statement
- 4:08saying it would liaise with organizers to ensure future
- 4:11compliance with the public health orders after the use of
- 4:15Wales Health. Deemed the location to be a
- 4:17major recreational. Leti when contacted by Guardian
- 4:21Australia for comment on Thursday?
- 4:23Hillsong spokesman denied. The event was essentially a
- 4:27music festival. Well okay.
- 4:29I do know a little bit about these music about youth camps
- 4:34and I know a little bit about music festivals to funny enough.
- 4:36And for this Hillsong spokesman spokesperson person to deny the
- 4:42event was essentially a music festival.
- 4:45I'm sorry. But if you're, if you were just
- 4:48a musician Ian or a festival organizer just on the outside.
- 4:51Looking in at these youth camps. You would, you would have to say
- 4:55this would fall into the bracket.
- 4:58This would fall under that umbrella of a music festival at
- 5:01they definitely do look like it. You have Pete you have a band
- 5:04standing up for front playing playing with you know, even if
- 5:09it's Worship Christian worship music, it's still a still
- 5:13playing music that people then go and dance and Marsh to.
- 5:17Okay. It comes across Us as a music
- 5:20festival. Continuing on these events are
- 5:23annual High school-aged youth camps and are not similar to a
- 5:27music festival. In any way.
- 5:28The spokesperson said I think that spokesperson is being a
- 5:33little disingenuous, maybe a little delusional in their
- 5:36answer. Yeah, you really not help doing
- 5:38yourself any favors, Hillsong with that kind of answer outdoor
- 5:43Christian Services are held during the camp, but they're
- 5:45these are only a small part of the program and any Singing is
- 5:49only a small part of each service.
- 5:52Hey, brackets are goes on. Say a video circulating on
- 5:54social media today. Reflects a few minutes of this
- 5:57part of the program, but when pressed on how large groups of
- 6:01young people dancing to songs such as Turn Down for What.
- 6:05Bye. DJ Snake and Lil Jon constituted
- 6:09constituted a religious service. The Hillsong spokesperson did
- 6:14not respond. This is the problem with
- 6:15Hillsong. Okay, they keep trying to Push
- 6:18the boundaries, they don't try and work within the rules and
- 6:22they give themselves. They give the church in general,
- 6:25a bad name because of statements like this.
- 6:27No, no, this isn't a music festival.
- 6:29No, no, we're staying within the rules and not we you can't call
- 6:33this a festival. This is just a youth camp.
- 6:36Oh, yeah. But but what about what about
- 6:38people who are singing and dancing to a song?
- 6:41That's not a devotional song, not a Christian Soul, Turn Down
- 6:46For What by DJ Snake and Lil Jon.
- 6:48Well well, I don't know. Car needs to that one.
- 6:52Hillsong just don't do themselves, any favors.
- 6:55So the problem is the new restrictions to a Spate of
- 6:57cancellations and postponements from several music events,
- 7:01including Grapevine, Gathering, Festival Tamworth, Country,
- 7:04Music Festival, and National tours by Belinda, Carlisle on
- 7:07Rod Stewart, but churches and places of worship were
- 7:11considered exempt from the restrictions with the New South
- 7:13Wales Health, spokesman telling the Australian on Tuesday,
- 7:17singing and dancing. And Hospitality of venues and
- 7:20nightclubs is deemed. I risk due to increased movement
- 7:24and mingling within and across these venues the influence of
- 7:28alcohol consumption and the removal of masks in these
- 7:31settings, to consume food and drink people attending religious
- 7:35Services, generally remain in fixed positions and master
- 7:39mandatory for these indoor Gatherings.
- 7:41So, this is the problem. They've made it for a general
- 7:44Church setting. And then, Hillsong have gone
- 7:48said ìyou, that will include Our Youth Camp Where we don't have
- 7:53where we everyone knows their youth camps aren't a general
- 7:57Church setting. You know, though, they have the
- 8:00obligatory moshpit going, no one's wearing masks.
- 8:05They're not even not even dancing to Christian music.
- 8:07Anyway, the dancing to other music.
- 8:10And then you wonder why people out there, who aren't Christians
- 8:16clubs, pubs bands, touring groups festivals.
- 8:20You wonder? Why people I get frustrated with
- 8:25places with churches, like Hillsong a Hillsong.
- 8:30If anyone from Nelson was listening, you really need to
- 8:32pull your head in and do the right thing by everyone.
- 8:36Okay, now I'll just go by the last article, which said that
- 8:41he'll songs avoided Defines due to political click connections.
- 8:47This is on Sky News to Hillsong church has political
- 8:50connections, helped them avoid a fine after allowing singing and
- 8:54dancing at a Youth Event, says the New South Wales greens.
- 8:57MP, David Shoebridge. Now, they don't offer any any
- 9:01evidence for that. This is just the greens typical
- 9:03greens, mouthing off saying something without offering any
- 9:07kind of evidence and I wouldn't believe in the came out of a
- 9:10green Senator, the mouth anyway, but But the problem is the
- 9:17problem is they got he goes on to say mister Shoebridge said
- 9:20Hillsong had a very very close connections to some of the
- 9:24liberal party in New South Wales, not least, Scott Morrison
- 9:27as the current prime minister. One rule for those who are
- 9:32well-connected politically, Hillsong in a different rule for
- 9:35everybody else. And this, I believe highlights
- 9:38the problem with Hillsong and what they've done with this
- 9:41Youth Camp, okay? They do have a lot of political
- 9:44connections and they do have probably a lot of sway in the
- 9:48political arena in Australia and when these rules came in for for
- 9:54these restrictions came in for these festivals and pubs and
- 9:57clubs and churches. Religious Services were given
- 10:02exemptions. Hillsong should have put more
- 10:06consideration into what they were doing and thought, you know
- 10:09what, we can't have at typical youth camp, we need to consider
- 10:15the rest of Australia. We need to consider how this
- 10:18looks perception as 11 calling wise, but one man said to me
- 10:25perception is everything. Jason he says, Perception.
- 10:30Hillsong, You need to remember perception.
- 10:34You've had two years of constantly bad headlines.
- 10:39You need to think you need to think.
- 10:41Before you act, you really do. That's my opinion.
- 10:46Don't be too hard on a church. I just thank you for listening
- 10:51to the slippery. Slope
