- 0:00Father, I just want to thank you for your faithfulness and goodness.
- 0:17Thank you for these opportunities.
- 0:19Lord, we're not a people that have been called to stand on political stances and we are
- 0:29people that have been called to stand on your word and I pray that as we walk through it
- 0:34we understand the importance of it and that we really understand the importance of it
- 0:39for your people.
- 0:40Help us to rightly divide it, to teach full counsel of your word, to really stand on the
- 0:46side of righteousness, on the side of truth, not on the side of opinion or political stance
- 0:53but really help us to be sanctified separate, different than the world in every way and
- 1:00I pray that your word impacts us in a way that this kind of really starts to transform
- 1:07our minds in understanding who you are and what your purpose and plan is.
- 1:13Lord, we thank you for your faithfulness and goodness and we thank you for these opportunities
- 1:18to present the truth before people for them to decide for themselves the reality of your
- 1:26goodness and faithfulness but yet also that through the power of the Holy Spirit truth
- 1:33is revealed and truth comes.
- 1:36So Lord we thank you for that and we praise you in Jesus' name, amen.
- 1:41So we're going to be dealing with some very tough issues today as a matter of fact dealing
- 1:46with that particular issue itself.
- 1:50So if you would go to verse 7.
- 1:58I feel led to say this, so I'm going to say it.
- 2:01A lot of times I think what preachers do is they get on their soap boxes about certain
- 2:06things and they're not really on the soap box of truth biblically, they're on the soap
- 2:15box of wanting to be accepted among their peers or among other quote unquote believers.
- 2:24Though there are times when that is a good thing, I think in many cases it can be a detrimental
- 2:29thing because the preacher should always be pushing and driving people to Jesus and that
- 2:36Jesus is the one who should be bringing the reflection of holiness and righteousness as
- 2:41we look at ourselves compared to him and that's what should be reorienting us.
- 2:46So I'm saying that because I think this is going to be important as we go through verse
- 2:517 through the rest of the chapter.
- 2:53So verse 7 of chapter 5 says this, in the days of his flesh Jesus offered up prayers
- 2:59and supplications with loud cries and tears to him who was able to save him from death
- 3:07and he was heard because of his reverence.
- 3:11Although he was a son he learned obedience through what he suffered and being made perfect
- 3:18he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, being designated by God
- 3:27a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.
- 3:33Without this we have much to say and it is hard to explain since you have become doll
- 3:40of hearing for though by this time you ought to be teachers you need someone to teach you
- 3:46again the basic principles of the oracles of God.
- 3:51You need milk not solid food for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the world
- 3:57of righteousness since he is a child but solid food is for the mature for those who have
- 4:05heard for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish
- 4:12good from evil.
- 4:15Now very important because verse 9 really starts to deal with a particular conversation
- 4:23a particular statement.
- 4:25So first I want us to understand this Christ is the king of righteousness our high priest
- 4:32our Melchizedek.
- 4:35Now what's interesting about the word Melchizedek he is means king of righteousness but do you
- 4:41know where he is from?
- 4:43He is from he is the king of Salem or Salam right.
- 4:49Salem is the king of peace.
- 4:51He is the king of peace the king of righteousness.
- 4:55Now the question would be many would say well that's Jesus but isn't isn't God Yahweh the
- 5:02king of righteousness.
- 5:04Isn't God Yahweh the king of peace.
- 5:07Is he not as the triune God the king of all things.
- 5:13I mean what would change only Jesus being the king of righteousness and the king of
- 5:17peace when in reality God himself is king.
- 5:23Jesus being the second person of the Trinity representing the triune Godhead.
- 5:29Now I want you to think about that because I there in my opinion I think Melchizedek
- 5:36may be a little different than what you're thinking.
- 5:39I want you to think about that in the next couple of weeks as we get into chapter 7.
- 5:44Now that was principle number one Christ is the king of righteousness our high priest
- 5:49our Melchizedek Christ being our source of eternal salvation requires a high priest who
- 5:58was and is and always will be the priest of the most high God.
- 6:05And remember we talked about a couple weeks ago that Jesus is the exact imprint the exact
- 6:12representation of the father that he and the father are the exactly the same and if he
- 6:17and the father are exactly the same then so is the spirit of God.
- 6:22There's a hint.
- 6:23Now when we're looking at Hebrews chapter 5 verse 9 here's some very important words
- 6:28here and being made perfect was Jesus made perfect.
- 6:34The word perfect here is not that he was imperfect to become perfect.
- 6:40This word perfect actually is the is this is the statement exalted to the state of heavenly
- 6:47majesty.
- 6:50So Jesus being exalted to the state of heavenly majesty.
- 6:57Remember Jesus says in chapter 17 of John that he is going to the father and that he
- 7:04specifically prays in the beginning of his prayer that God the father would glorify the
- 7:10son and bring him back to the same glory he had before.
- 7:16That's this idea right here exalted to the state of heavenly majesty.
- 7:21Okay.
- 7:22That's the word perfect.
- 7:23He became the source the ideas ideas means the cause.
- 7:32He became the cause of eternal salvation.
- 7:36He causes eternal salvation.
- 7:39I want you to hear that.
- 7:41You know what causing is right.
- 7:44Something that's not to something that becomes he causes it.
- 7:50He is the cause of eternal salvation to who to all who obey him to everyone or only to
- 7:59those who obey him.
- 8:02And Jesus says if you love me you obey me.
- 8:05He also said that you will know them by their fruit.
- 8:09So we know some very important things here.
- 8:11God's people obey him.
- 8:13That's what we talked about last week.
- 8:15Obedience is the key to knowing who is of who and who is not.
- 8:21So when we're looking at this issue of the cause of eternal salvation it is the cause
- 8:27of eternal salvation to all who obey him.
- 8:30Chapter verse 10 being designated.
- 8:33What's interesting about this word designated is it's to address salute or call by name
- 8:40in public.
- 8:42God the father has addressed Jesus.
- 8:47Good Jesus has called Jesus by name in public as a high priest.
- 8:57That's my high priest.
- 8:59Now what's interesting about this high priest is he has always been a high priest.
- 9:06Remember Jesus was crucified before the foundation of the world which means he was priest of
- 9:11his people before the foundation of the world.
- 9:14That the very things that he had to represent concerning the priesthood had to be applied
- 9:19to Abraham Isaac and Jacob and all of the saints before his crucifixion.
- 9:25Isn't that interesting.
- 9:26So the very act of the priest coming before the father on behalf of his people saying
- 9:33I got them covered.
- 9:36I'm their sacrifice.
- 9:37We talked about that last week also.
- 9:39So the father addressed Jesus and calls Jesus by name in public as high priest and this
- 9:48particular high priest by God a high priest after Kata the word here is the word Kata
- 9:55means according to.
- 9:57So he is a high priest according to the order.
- 10:01Now many people would think that the word order would mean oh he's got to be secret
- 10:07society.
- 10:08I'm not just a joke.
- 10:10You guys got serious on that.
- 10:14So when you think of an order of something you're like whoa.
- 10:17Well actually it's not the word order.
- 10:20The word actually is the character the fashion the quality the style or after the manner
- 10:27of the priest considering of Melchizedek.
- 10:32So Jesus is according to the character fashion quality style and manner of Melchizedek.
- 10:46Isn't that interesting.
- 10:48Doesn't that sound familiar that he would be the exact imprint of Melchizedek that he
- 10:59is of the character fashion quality and style of Melchizedek.
- 11:04That's the point here.
- 11:05In other words the consistency of the scripture is applied here that Jesus is the high priest
- 11:12and he is the exact character fashion and quality of Melchizedek.
- 11:17That's what this word means.
- 11:19It's an interesting word.
- 11:21You can go a little bit deeper dive and that's where you'll find that information in the
- 11:26lexicon.
- 11:28Now turn to Genesis chapter 14.
- 11:31Genesis chapter 14 just so that you understand a little bit about Melchizedek.
- 11:37In Genesis 14 there is only three places in all of scripture that Melchizedek is mentioned.
- 11:45One is right cheer.
- 11:49Right cheer I know for you guys who are like from the city you know what cheer is right.
- 11:55Here.
- 11:56That's just a silly thing.
- 11:58When you grow up in the hood you kind of know what cheer.
- 12:00Well how y'all I'm from right cheer you know that's I you guys I lost you.
- 12:04It's okay.
- 12:05It's all right Ben's going squirrel.
- 12:08I got it.
- 12:09Who squirreled me.
- 12:10That was my wife.
- 12:13Chapter 14 verse 17 says this and after his return from the defeat of chair Delorma and
- 12:22the kings who were with him the king of Sodom and went out to meet him in the valley.
- 12:29And the question is who.
- 12:30So what happens is Abram gets done having a war with the kings and during this time
- 12:36of the kings the king of Sodom comes with Abram and he specifically asked for something.
- 12:45Now how do we know that this is the king of Sodom because the scripture says so and God
- 12:49hasn't destroyed the city of Sodom and Gomorrah yet.
- 12:52That doesn't happen until chapter 18.
- 12:54So we're in chapter 14.
- 12:56Okay.
- 12:57And then he says this he comes out to meet him in the valley of Shiva.
- 13:02That is the king's valley and Melchizedek king of Salem or Salam.
- 13:10Now the king Melchizedek the king of righteousness is the king of peace because that's what Salam
- 13:16means.
- 13:18Okay.
- 13:19Brought out bread and wine.
- 13:24He was priest of God most high.
- 13:27Now it's interesting is many would say see that's Jesus because he brought bread and
- 13:35wine out.
- 13:39Couldn't the Holy Spirit bring out bread and wine if he was Melchizedek or couldn't the
- 13:43father bring out bread and wine if he was Melchizedek.
- 13:45I mean aren't they God Yahweh the triune.
- 13:49So verse 19 says and he blessed him.
- 13:53He blessed Abram and said blessed be Abram by God most high possessor of heaven and earth
- 14:01and blessed be God most high who has delivered your enemies into your hand.
- 14:08And what did Abram do.
- 14:09And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.
- 14:16It's an offering a tithe to end the king of Sodom and Sodom said Abram give me the persons
- 14:25but take the goods for yourself.
- 14:27And Abram's like no I don't think so.
- 14:30No way because if I do that you're going to be like I'm taking credit and it's going to
- 14:35be bad and I really don't like you.
- 14:37So Abram was like you're not getting a penny you're not getting anything from me.
- 14:41And that's how the story goes because four chapters later the city is in ruins.
- 14:49What's interesting about Melchizedek is the name of Melchizedek where Melchizedek is from
- 14:55what Melchizedek does and Abram's response to Melchizedek.
- 15:02This is not a mere man.
- 15:05And this is important because as we continue to read we're going to understand a little
- 15:10bit more about Melchizedek.
- 15:12I think you guys are starting to see where I believe who the person Melchizedek is.
- 15:20Okay now let's keep going.
- 15:24Principle number two.
- 15:26What God has said in his word is meant to be understood starting with the simple to
- 15:32the difficult.
- 15:34God has said it not to make it difficult for you.
- 15:39What God says he means.
- 15:42It's not confusing.
- 15:43He says exactly what he means and he means what he says.
- 15:47He's not trying to do some mystery.
- 15:49So if you have some dude on stage or some lady on stage going I have a mystery of God
- 15:54and all that kind of stuff run for his run.
- 15:58No mystery.
- 15:59There's no secrets.
- 16:02It is exactly what he says he is and he does exactly what he says he's going to do.
- 16:07And so salvation is easy to understand.
- 16:12We're sinners.
- 16:13We're dead in our trespasses and sins.
- 16:15The only way to go to heaven Jesus says I am the way I must die for the sinner shed
- 16:22my blood to cover their sin be buried so that they will have victory over the grave because
- 16:29I know about you.
- 16:31We have an entire cemetery of bodies that have not been resurrected yet that one one
- 16:38day will.
- 16:40OK.
- 16:41So that being said he resurrected from the grave.
- 16:45So we now have victory over sin death in the grave.
- 16:48That's why I shared with the kids.
- 16:50Now let's clarify this a little bit.
- 16:53If salvation is that easy to understand then why do so many people don't understand it
- 17:03because most of you guys if you're believers go I totally get that.
- 17:07Go tell it out there and they're going to look at you like you're crazy like what are
- 17:10you talking about makes no sense.
- 17:14Well so let me say it this way.
- 17:17Salvation is easy to understand with the Holy Spirit but impossible without him.
- 17:24Want you to grab that salvation is not your decision.
- 17:30Salvation is a work of God.
- 17:32And when the Holy Spirit comes upon the heart and changes the heart they come to the truth
- 17:37illumination the doctor of illumination to the reality of salvation at which point they
- 17:42confess the impossible.
- 17:45Jesus is my master.
- 17:47That's what this means.
- 17:48And so First Corinthians chapter two verse 14 I've said this 20 million times.
- 17:53I'll continue to say it.
- 17:55It's a verse I use quite a bit but it's very clear.
- 18:00The natural person does not accept the things of the spirit of God for they are folly to
- 18:08him and he has not.
- 18:10He is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.
- 18:16You hear that they do not accept the things of the spirit is the gospel of the spirit
- 18:21of God.
- 18:23Jesus says in John 3 when he's having a conversation with Nicodemus Nicodemus you must be born
- 18:29of the water and of the spirit.
- 18:32Well how can a man enter his mother's womb a second time.
- 18:36He says that which is born of flesh is flesh.
- 18:38You got to be a human being that which is born of the spirit of spirit.
- 18:42You don't see the wind.
- 18:44You see the effects of the wind.
- 18:46You don't know where the wind came from.
- 18:47So it is with the spirit.
- 18:50There you go.
- 18:51Context scripture interpreting itself.
- 18:54Excellent thing.
- 18:55I love it.
- 18:56I don't need to work at it.
- 18:57You just got to present it.
- 18:59And so he clarifies a little bit more in Hebrews 5 11.
- 19:05He says about this about what this word this this Perry Perry us the word concerning this
- 19:14or concerning that.
- 19:16What is that the whole statement previously said.
- 19:19That's what us means.
- 19:21So Perry us means concerning the entire statement I previously said let's go there.
- 19:28What did he say though he was a son.
- 19:31He learned obedience through what he suffered and being made perfect.
- 19:36He became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him.
- 19:43Isn't that interesting.
- 19:44In other words because of what I just said to you you guys should know this.
- 19:51And then he clarifies a little bit more.
- 19:53We have much to say about eternal salvation and the work of Christ.
- 19:59But it's hard to explain.
- 20:03First of all if it's an easy doctrine it's something we should know.
- 20:06Why would the writer say it's difficult for me to talk about with you.
- 20:11I'm going to explain it to you.
- 20:12This is what he says since you have become doll of hearing since you have since you have
- 20:18come to the point that you're not listening and the reason why you're not listening is
- 20:24because you aren't mature.
- 20:26So here we go.
- 20:28Clarify this.
- 20:29Jesus actually shows this principle in Luke 24 verse 25 through 27.
- 20:35If you remember there were two guys walking on a road to Emmaus and Jesus shows up and
- 20:40they don't recognize him he's like yo have you heard what's going on like over these
- 20:44last couple days.
- 20:46And Jesus is like no go ahead and tell me.
- 20:49He didn't say no but he was like what what happened.
- 20:53And this is what Jesus says to them after the conversation.
- 20:56He said to them oh foolish ones and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have
- 21:02spoken was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into
- 21:08his glory and beginning with Moses and all the prophets he interpreted to them in all
- 21:16the scriptures the things concerning himself.
- 21:20In other words why aren't you believing.
- 21:23I've already told you this stuff.
- 21:25Not only have I told you it but the prophets and Moses told you this.
- 21:30Why don't you believe.
- 21:32Because they were foolish immature without life.
- 21:40So here comes the next statement.
- 21:44Principle number three you will not grow and mature in faith if you do not learn the fullness
- 21:50of God's word especially the basic doctrines of faith.
- 21:56You must grow you must go beyond the Gospels and dig deep into the Old and New Testament.
- 22:02You need the full counsel of the word of God.
- 22:05That's what this means.
- 22:07That's exactly what this particular writer is talking about.
- 22:10Now to prove this out a little bit let me give you a supporting scripture.
- 22:15Until we until we all attain the unity of the faith and the knowledge of the son of
- 22:20God to mature manhood to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ so that
- 22:26we may no longer be children tossed to and fro by waves and carried about by every wind
- 22:33of doctrine by cunning by human cunning by craftiness and deceitful schemes.
- 22:38Ephesians 4 13 through 14.
- 22:40What is the purpose of us teachers is to teach you the full counsel of God of God's word.
- 22:46What is your responsibility.
- 22:49Guys I'll clarify that right now.
- 22:53Hebrews chapter 5 verse 12 to 13 for though by this time Dia ho Kronos.
- 23:02That's what by this time in other words you guys should be beyond this already.
- 23:10Ouch.
- 23:12That hurts.
- 23:15Why are we even talking about this.
- 23:16This should be simple for you.
- 23:19Actually he's writing to Jewish people.
- 23:22The Jews know it's not a secret when he brings up Melchizedek he knows exactly they know
- 23:29exactly who he's talking about.
- 23:31And he's saying you by this time you should know this already.
- 23:34You ought to be teachers.
- 23:36You should be doing teaching not sitting as a student.
- 23:42You need someone to teach you again the basic principles.
- 23:47The archaic the beginning the origin the story the story high on you guys should be on should
- 23:56be beyond the archaic story high on this year this word beginning or origin of the first
- 24:02things the simple teachings like the alphabet doctrine of salvation the doctrine of righteousness
- 24:09the doctrine of justification the doctrine of sanctification the doctrine of election
- 24:13the doctrine.
- 24:14All of those are simple basic truths.
- 24:16We should be talking about the deep things of God.
- 24:19How does God totally transform our lives.
- 24:21What can we do to continue working for the kingdom.
- 24:24Like that's what he's talking about here.
- 24:26But we're so too stuck on the little things.
- 24:31So we saying listen I got to go back and teach you the alphabet.
- 24:34A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P.
- 24:39You guys know.
- 24:44Come on.
- 24:45That's what he's saying here.
- 24:46So by this time you ought to be teachers.
- 24:48You need someone to teach you again the basic principles the origin the beginning of the
- 24:54simple things like the alphabet.
- 24:55Because that's literally what this word means.
- 24:58Stoichayan.
- 25:01What specific simple things like the alphabet the oracles of God.
- 25:08Can't even obey the simple things.
- 25:10That's one of the things that's so important about baptism.
- 25:13It is simple.
- 25:15It requires no knowledge.
- 25:18It requires an attitude of obedience.
- 25:21That's it.
- 25:22I want to do this because he's asked me to.
- 25:24And I love him and I'm going to do it because I love him.
- 25:28That's why we do it.
- 25:30No secret.
- 25:31No mystery.
- 25:32There's no salvation and baptism.
- 25:36It's the work of God upon the life.
- 25:40Now he says you need milk not solid food.
- 25:44This is what this writer says.
- 25:46I can't feed you the deep things of God that you'll choke.
- 25:50I got to give you milk.
- 25:51I got to you got to start suckling again.
- 25:55For everyone this word everyone is the word pas and this word pas literally means any.
- 26:01So it's not every single believer.
- 26:03It means any believer who lives met to echo or mateco is another way to say it.
- 26:11Mateco to partake of or to feed on.
- 26:17So this particular truth this reality of feeding you milk is for anyone who feeds on milk.
- 26:27If all you're going to do is go to church because you want to hear a happy message this
- 26:33ain't the place for you.
- 26:36You know as Stephen Furtick would say if you're coming for doctrine go get fat at another
- 26:43church wear that wear that church come and get fat with the truth of God because mature
- 26:49people preach the gospel because when all craziness breaks loose guess whose church
- 26:55is going to be empty because there's no mature believers there.
- 27:01Real men need to lead.
- 27:05And so the reason why he says this to them for any who feed on milk is unskilled.
- 27:14I pie Ross I pie Ross this word I pie Ross means inexperienced or without experience
- 27:23with a specific thing.
- 27:26It means you don't have any experience with a specific thing.
- 27:29What thing the Bible.
- 27:32You know it's 30 years of walking with Christ.
- 27:35I'm a little bit more than that but I'm not even halfway as efficient as R.C.
- 27:43Sproul was before he went home to be with the Lord or John MacArthur or some of these
- 27:46guys they know the word far better than I do.
- 27:50But people ask how Pastor Joe how can you know that because I work out I spend time
- 27:58in it.
- 27:59I think about it constantly.
- 28:01Why do you think about it because I love it.
- 28:04How can you not love this thing.
- 28:05You're like well I don't like reading.
- 28:08Listen you don't even got to read you got Bible apps that'll talk to you.
- 28:14I mean pretty easy nowadays.
- 28:18How could you not.
- 28:19And that's exactly what he says here that they are they are they are inexperienced with
- 28:25the word of righteousness is the word here in their inexperienced in the word of
- 28:31righteousness.
- 28:33He tells you what they're inexperienced.
- 28:35The reason why they're unskilled the reason why they're on milk is because they just want
- 28:39to be told how wonderful they are.
- 28:43Vodi Bakum called that this sissified Jesus.
- 28:47They want the Jesus that's tolerant but they don't want the Jesus that tells the truth.
- 28:56They just can't live any way you choose to live.
- 28:59And so what happens is this logos.
- 29:04Dike Yasuna is the word here.
- 29:07Dike Yasuna the doctrine concerning the way which man may attain the state of approval
- 29:15of God.
- 29:17When it talks about the word of righteousness he's talking about the doctrine concerning
- 29:21the way of the Christian life.
- 29:26Now this is true then we can understand why they're on milk.
- 29:31Why because they are napias napias means they're childish untaught.
- 29:38One thing you'll know you're going to get taught here and it's going to be hard and
- 29:41it's meant to be hard.
- 29:42It's not.
- 29:43It's hard for me.
- 29:44You think I don't struggle with some of these things when I'm in it.
- 29:48If I don't struggle I have to wonder where my mind and heart is that I want to be radically
- 29:53transformed for Jesus even now.
- 29:58And I want to test everything.
- 30:01Your job is not to take me at my word.
- 30:03Your job is to prove it.
- 30:04And if you're going to prove it write it down.
- 30:06Show me show the show the elders show us.
- 30:11Let's reason together through the scripture.
- 30:13Everyone has that responsibility.
- 30:15That is what he's talking about in the next verse in chapter in verse 14.
- 30:21You need to be able to discern the difference between good and evil.
- 30:25And so here's some scripture to clarify the prove this out acts chapter 20 verse 26 through
- 30:3327.
- 30:34Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all for I did
- 30:42not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God.
- 30:48Listen to me I don't care how you feel about what I'm teaching.
- 30:54If it is biblical and true and the scripture interprets the scripture that is not my problem.
- 31:00My problem is to love you through it and let us reason together with it.
- 31:04And if I'm wrong trust me I will write this ship.
- 31:09But you need to understand if I don't teach the full counsel of the word of God your blood
- 31:14is on my shoulders not going to happen.
- 31:19I will not be looked at by my God and my Savior as as inefficient and a failure to preach
- 31:28and teach the full counsel of his word.
- 31:30I won't do it.
- 31:32That's on me.
- 31:35How do we know this because he says this in Second Timothy 316 for all scripture is breathed
- 31:40out by God and profitable for teaching for reproof for correction and for training and
- 31:47righteousness that that you that I the man of God may be complete and equipped for every
- 31:55good work all scripture not just the ones that make us feel good the ones that are difficult.
- 32:04That being said it's very important.
- 32:09You guys know the five solace.
- 32:12Well here's one I have not given to you yet.
- 32:15Sola scriptura the scripture alone is only the scripture alone.
- 32:23Scripture is the only thing given to God's people to renew the mind.
- 32:28There is nothing on the planet that will change your thinking.
- 32:31You're like well I don't need the word of God the spirit will do that.
- 32:35The spirit uses the word of God.
- 32:37The scripture says that God sends his word out and it will not return to him void.
- 32:40The whole point of the word of God is to change you.
- 32:43We'll prove that in a minute.
- 32:45It's the only thing on the planet that will convert the heart change the mind of man which
- 32:50the Holy Spirit uses to convert the heart.
- 32:53Faith comes by hearing and hearing that of the word of Christ.
- 32:57The very gift of faith comes through the gospel through the word of God.
- 33:01Now how do we know this.
- 33:05John 17 14.
- 33:08If you got to get a chance come on out on Wednesdays.
- 33:11We are here.
- 33:12John 17.
- 33:13And this is what he says I have given them your word.
- 33:20There's more to it but I want you to hear that and I'll clarify this again because in
- 33:24Psalm 1 verse 1 and 2 it says blesses the man who walks not in the council the wicked
- 33:30nor stands in the way of sinners nor sits in the seat of scoffers but his delight is
- 33:35in the law of the Lord and on his law he meditates day and night.
- 33:39You want to be a man blessed a woman blessed meditate on his word.
- 33:44You know what meditate means.
- 33:45Chew the cud.
- 33:48How many guys know what cows do.
- 33:51They chew cud.
- 33:52How many stomachs does a cow have.
- 33:55Four.
- 33:57You know as that's called every time he swallows and throws it back up.
- 34:01Cud.
- 34:02Why does he chew the cud.
- 34:03To get every single bit of nourishment that that cow can get out of that.
- 34:07That's why you guys got milk.
- 34:10Chew the cud.
- 34:12Now let's clarify this a little bit more.
- 34:16Verse 14 but solid food stereos the firm immovable the hard the rigid the solid food the food
- 34:26food here is trophy.
- 34:28What's interesting it's not talking about food.
- 34:31It's talking about the substance for instruction or the food of the mind.
- 34:37So this immovable rigid food of the mind the substance of instruction is for the mature.
- 34:45In other words you notice the opposite of the mature is the milk.
- 34:51So you want to drink milk.
- 34:55Keep enjoying your milk.
- 34:56Eventually it will rot.
- 34:59But food chew it up.
- 35:03Right.
- 35:04For the for it is for the mature for those who have their powers of discernment trained
- 35:11by constant practice.
- 35:15Notice where your powers of discernment come from.
- 35:18It comes from the gymnasial the exercising vigorously the hexes word here practice.
- 35:27So this word trained by constant is the word gymnasial vigorous training and the word practice
- 35:35is the word hexes.
- 35:37Now what's interesting about this word hexes this word means power acquired by practice
- 35:45or use.
- 35:46In other words you don't get like Arnold Schwarzenegger by taking a pill.
- 35:54You actually have to lift weights.
- 35:57So you've got to exercise your spiritual muscles.
- 36:01Just pull it up start doing curls thinking about it.
- 36:07All right.
- 36:08So practice the power acquired by practice or use.
- 36:12What is the power acquired by practice or use discernment.
- 36:17You need to vigorously exercise biblical truth.
- 36:23Now what's interesting about what you're going to discern is you're going to discern the
- 36:28difference between the good the callous or the evil the Kakos.
- 36:35So the callous is this the beautiful by reason of purity of heart and life praiseworthy morally
- 36:44good and noble.
- 36:45So in order for you to exercise what is good the callous so that you can know what is beautiful
- 36:52you got to spend time in the word.
- 36:54And then he says in order for you to know the Kakos the evil the contrary to divine
- 36:59and human law that which is a crime.
- 37:03Did you know when you sin you're committing a crime.
- 37:08You may not commit crime against man but you're committing a crime against Jesus.
- 37:13So how does it feel to be a criminal.
- 37:17I'm a criminal.
- 37:20We're all criminals.
- 37:22We're committing a crime.
- 37:23We are we are living in a way and failing to discern that which is contrary to divine
- 37:30law.
- 37:32That's a crime.
- 37:35Wow.
- 37:36Ouch.
- 37:38That's the point.
- 37:39So how do we live in such a way that we avoid committing the crime.
- 37:44How do we live in such a way that we can have the powers of the sermon trained by vigorous
- 37:51exercise so that we can acquire this discernment through practice and use so we can know the
- 38:00good and the evil.
- 38:04Psalm 119 verse 9 through 16.
- 38:07And this is for all of all of you young men and all of the old men and women and everyone
- 38:12else.
- 38:13This is for everybody.
- 38:15But the scripture here specifically uses this term.
- 38:18How can a young man keep his way pure by guarding it according to your word.
- 38:26With my whole heart I seek you.
- 38:28Let me not wander from your commandments.
- 38:31For I've stored your word up in my heart that I might not sin against you.
- 38:37Blessed are you O Lord.
- 38:38Teach me your statutes.
- 38:40With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth in the way of your testimonies your
- 38:47commandments your truth I delight as much as in all riches.
- 38:55I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways.
- 39:00I will delight in your statutes.
- 39:02I will not forget your word.
- 39:06Memorize it.
- 39:08How can a young man keep his way pure by living according to your word.
- 39:11I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.
- 39:14That's an IV if you guys want to know.
- 39:17I memorize this as a 22 year old.
- 39:25Just to clarify this in a New Testament statement pretty simple Romans 12 to do not be conformed
- 39:33to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind so you can test and approve what
- 39:39God's will is his good pleasing and perfect will.
- 39:43Romans 12 to why is this important because it's the word that transforms.
- 39:52Why is this important because you should be eating meat by now not drinking milk.
- 39:56Why is this important because you need to grow and until you grow in the fullness of
- 40:03Christ then you will not know the work that you're supposed to do.
- 40:10That's what this whole thing's about.
- 40:12And it's important because that's the responsibility of the priest and he's saying this so that
- 40:18you understand when I'm talking to you about Christ and his eternal salvation and his priesthood
- 40:25this is basic truth for you.
- 40:28So when you get into chapter six your mind's going to explode because there's some deep
- 40:34things there and then you get into chapter seven you're going oh my goodness I didn't
- 40:38see that and then you go deeper and deeper and you go into chapter 10 and you understand
- 40:45you have to suffer and you got to consider it pure joy brothers when you go through suffering.
- 40:54How many of you guys are willing to allow the plundering of your property for the sake
- 40:58of other believers.
- 40:59You're going to give up your house and go out there in the street while people get persecuted
- 41:03and beaten.
- 41:04That's what they did is that you actually went and participated.
- 41:10Why because they knew of a better treasure.
- 41:13That is meat.
- 41:15It's a lot of truth coming.
- 41:18So that's why the writer writes what he writes here.
- 41:22Man feast on the word.
- 41:26The word is full of goodness.
- 41:28It is what?
- 41:32Filling for the soul is sweet as honey.
- 41:38It tastes good.
- 41:39It is your spiritual manna.
- 41:43So enjoy it.
- 41:45More to come in next week as we get into chapter six.
- 41:49So let's pray.
- 41:50Father I want to thank you so much for your faithfulness and goodness.
- 41:53Thank you Lord for your word.
- 41:55Thank you for challenging us to be people who vigorously exercise your word in our lives.
- 42:03Help us to test everything to know your truth.
- 42:07You have promised that you would guide us in it.
- 42:09To you be honor and glory and power and might forever in Jesus name.
- 42:13Amen.
