- 0:00As we come to the end of yet another year, it's my prayer and
- 0:05desire to share with you a truth from the Scriptures that greatly
- 0:08impacted me earlier in 2025. It is an observation that has
- 0:14stayed with me and was deepened throughout the year, and it is
- 0:21my sincere longing that it will be a revelation that blossoms in
- 0:25the years to come. But my prayer also is that it
- 0:29will be of help to you, as it was to me, in shaping how we
- 0:34perceive the Lord. I truly believe that this
- 0:40insight will accomplish at least two things for the child of God
- 0:45who sincerely longs to worship, live, and please the Lord, but
- 0:52frequently is frustrated or disappointed with themselves in
- 0:56that pursuit. This can provide a level of rest
- 1:02to your soul that can help you as you seek to honor God.
- 1:11If you really seize these glorious insights and you take
- 1:14them home with you and you meditate on them in the days to
- 1:18come, I believe with all my heart that it can encourage a
- 1:22fresh and strong adoration, a God word.
- 1:27Adoration, on the other hand, for the person who claims to
- 1:32love Christ but is not true. In fact, habitually you are
- 1:39living in spiritual adultery, loving the world and its
- 1:44pleasures more than the Creator and the Savior of the world.
- 1:47This message may unsettle you, and I actually hope it does.
- 1:53I pray that it disturbs you enough to prompt repentance so
- 1:59that you would flee to Christ, confess your sin, and experience
- 2:07true satisfaction and joy that only He can offer.
- 2:12And the truth that I am Speaking of today can be found in
- 2:16Solomon's prayer at the dedication of the temple in
- 2:19First Kings chapter 8. And I invite you to turn with me
- 2:24in your Bibles to that portion of Scripture, First Kings
- 2:28chapter 8, verse 38 down to verse 39, and I will wait for
- 2:35you. This great king says the
- 2:47following as he is seeking God before the nation in verse 38.
- 2:53Whatever prayer, whatever plea is made by any man or by all
- 2:58your people, Israel, each knowing the affliction of his
- 3:01own heart and stretching out his hands towards this house, then
- 3:05here in heaven your dwelling place, and forgive and act and
- 3:10render to each whose heart you know, according to all his ways.
- 3:15For you, you only know the hearts of all the children of
- 3:21mankind. I want to speak to you today
- 3:24about how God sees and knows our hearts.
- 3:30What a remarkable admission Solomon makes in the middle of
- 3:32this petition. You only know the hearts of all
- 3:37the children of mankind. Why is he saying that here?
- 3:42Well, we have to remember that in this prayer, at the
- 3:45dedication of this incredible achievement, the dwelling place
- 3:49of God on the earth in the Temple, Solomon understands
- 3:54humanity's tendency to go back into their ways of rebellion and
- 4:00idolatry and habitual sin, even for people like this Israel that
- 4:05is especially privileged to know God in such a unique fashion.
- 4:11And so knowing what may come in the days after the dedication,
- 4:15Solomon seeks the Lord and he says, oh God, if and when the
- 4:19people do sin and continue to live in that place, but they
- 4:24repent, I'm asking you to extend mercy and restoration to your
- 4:29children. I'm asking that you would not
- 4:33push them away, you would not turn your back on them, but that
- 4:36you would welcome them again. And it's important to remember
- 4:40that Solomon is not offering this prayer in solitude.
- 4:45This is a public event. And so the peoples are there
- 4:48observing it and listening to his very prayer as he makes it
- 4:52before God. And so you can say that Solomon
- 4:57is not only seeking the Lord, but indirectly teaching the
- 5:00people and reminding them of something concerning the Lord in
- 5:07our repentance. That God alone knows the
- 5:11sincerity of someone's contrition and desire to be
- 5:15right with God. That's why he's mentioning God's
- 5:18omniscience in this context. He's not telling God.
- 5:23God knows this about himself. He's telling the people that
- 5:28should they choose to live in sin even after this great reward
- 5:32of God choosing to be him in their midst and to fellowship
- 5:35with them, and if they were to turn back after realizing their
- 5:40foolishness, God knows. If you're sincere in your
- 5:44repentance, God really knows what's going on in your heart.
- 5:50And we see here that through the supplication, Solomon is also
- 5:55reminding the people that no one has and no one ever will be able
- 5:58to deceive God with insincere or formulaic confessions of sin.
- 6:05He alone perceives the intentions and the integrity of
- 6:07our hearts. He alone can see what is really
- 6:12occupying our motives and what is really behind our actions.
- 6:18So he can tell the difference between someone who wants to
- 6:22forsake their sin in order to please God and one who is merely
- 6:27seeking to escape its consequences.
- 6:30And so they go through perhaps a ritualistic type of repentance.
- 6:37But knowing the genuineness of 1's repentance is not the only
- 6:40thing that the Lord is aware of. There's something that He says
- 6:43in this same chapter a few verses back.
- 6:47That was the verse for me a few months ago that was opened in
- 6:53such a way that I'm still drawing refreshment from it.
- 6:58Look what Solomon says about his father David back in verse 17 of
- 7:02First Kings 8. He says now it was in the heart
- 7:08of David my father, to build a house for the name of the Lord,
- 7:13the God of Israel. But the Lord said to David, My
- 7:16father, whereas it was in your heart to build a house for my
- 7:21name, you did well that was in your heart.
- 7:26Nevertheless, you shall not build the house, but your son,
- 7:30who shall be born to you, shall build the house for my name.
- 7:36You know what's so remarkable about this passage?
- 7:39That you have God Almighty commending a man named David,
- 7:43but he does not praise King David for constructing the
- 7:47temple. He simply accepts and
- 7:52appreciates the fact that David had a desire to do so.
- 8:00What God is highlighting in David was never materialized.
- 8:06It was never realized. It never manifested.
- 8:10It wasn't something you can touch, it wasn't something you
- 8:13can measure necessarily. What God here is pleased with is
- 8:18a passion in David's heart, and so he lets him know you did
- 8:24well, that it was in your heart. Do you understand the
- 8:28implications of this for the true Christian?
- 8:34You may have had and you may still have holy aspirations.
- 8:38Christ honoring dreams and wishes, because of God's
- 8:43Providence and His will for you may prevent you from ever seeing
- 8:47it happen. And that may disturb you, that
- 8:52may frustrate you. But you have to understand that
- 8:55such intentions and longings, even if never fulfilled due to
- 8:59God's will, are still commended and appreciated by Him.
- 9:08What a thought. God honors our aspirations, not
- 9:14only our actions. You know what I find interesting
- 9:17about David after this point? There is no record of him ever
- 9:21protesting this prohibition. You have to understand, David
- 9:26had such a zeal for God's house that according to the Psalms,
- 9:29when it came to him desiring to build a house for him, he
- 9:32couldn't sleep at night. He stayed up all night because
- 9:37to him he's like, look at me in my palace.
- 9:39And God's, God's presence signified in that ark is in a
- 9:42tent. It became his, his one goal to
- 9:46do something about this, to exalt God's name.
- 9:51And it wasn't very long after David confessed his desire to do
- 9:54this that he was told prophetically, you will not
- 9:56build the house for me. Now here's what's so amazing.
- 10:01He doesn't protest. I believe perhaps in part, the
- 10:05reason why David could receive this and rest in this is because
- 10:09he realized that the Lord's pleasure was known simply in his
- 10:16longing. Because that's what David was
- 10:19after anyway. He wanted to, to bring the light
- 10:22to the Lord, and God wants to let him know.
- 10:24God knowing his heart, You're doing this for my glory.
- 10:27In my wisdom. I cannot let you build my house,
- 10:30but I want to let you know that you achieved your aim.
- 10:33I am pleased by the fact that you simply want to do it.
- 10:40This is the God that we serve, that he actually considers what
- 10:45is hidden, what we meditate on, what we long for.
- 10:53And as encouraging as this may be, our sinful hearts have a way
- 10:56of twisting such truths to justify our unwillingness to act
- 11:00in faith. You've probably had this
- 11:03conversation with somebody. I know I have.
- 11:06Maybe you've even said it. And I hope today will be the
- 11:08last time you ever do. We're somebody who is clearly
- 11:11living outside of God's will, somebody who is actually
- 11:15rejecting commands by God through His word for selfish
- 11:20reasons and sinful reasonings. And they say things like, well,
- 11:25God knows my heart. Have you heard that?
- 11:27Well, God, God knows my heart. As though the Lord condones
- 11:31compromise. This is not speaking about that.
- 11:36Far from it. Because David's concern and
- 11:39excitement for the temple did not come in brief spirits or
- 11:42fluctuated day by day. It consumed him, It was
- 11:46something he really wanted to do.
- 11:48It was something he was ready to do.
- 11:49It was something that he was willing to sacrifice anything
- 11:51for. And when he was told by God, you
- 11:53will not do it, he did the next best thing.
- 11:56OK, fine, you won't let me build it, then I'm going to fund it.
- 12:00And so he gave, and he gave of his own personal treasures and
- 12:03savings in order to leave this world, making an eternal impact.
- 12:11More than anything, this passage is meant to encourage those who
- 12:13have always wanted to serve God in a particular way, but I've
- 12:17experienced providentially redirection or hindered by the
- 12:20Holy Spirit. I want to let you know this
- 12:23afternoon and be assured that the Lord sees your heart and the
- 12:27desires in it and delights in them.
- 12:33This also serves as a warning for those who have hidden
- 12:35agendas or covetous motives and are willing to hide behind
- 12:41spiritual offices or camouflage themselves within the church
- 12:44circles to satisfy those impulses.
- 12:49Many people know Elijah was Elijah's assistant, but there
- 12:53are very few who remember the lessons that they can learn from
- 12:58Elijah's apprentice. Does anybody remember his name?
- 13:02Ghazi Ghazi. Ghazi had so much potential.
- 13:09Gehazi, who knows what could have been, what could have been
- 13:11accomplished through him as he was given access to 24/7
- 13:17discipleship, living under the tutelage of this mighty man of
- 13:21God, Elijah. But he squandered it.
- 13:23Gehazi blew it. Why did Gehazi blow it?
- 13:27Because his greed got the best of him.
- 13:31He so desired materialism that he threw away his calling.
- 13:38And the Bible gives us the moment that happened.
- 13:41The Bible actually tells us step by step when this took place,
- 13:45and it teaches us so much about what God knows about our hearts.
- 13:51One of the most incredible miracles that Elijah was able to
- 13:53perform by God's power was the healing of name in the Syrian.
- 13:58This Gentile who from a servant girl that was kidnapped from
- 14:02Israel, learned that there was a prophet in that land that they
- 14:06were war with, who had a relationship with God that can
- 14:11bring miracles into people's lives.
- 14:14And he is riddled with this disease.
- 14:17And sickness has a way of making people, even those who are
- 14:20unbelievers, desperate. Sickness has a way of humbling
- 14:24us. Sickness has a way of reminding
- 14:27us that we're human and we are not God.
- 14:31And so this name in the Syrian makes a petition to the king of
- 14:34Israel, and he makes his way to Israel.
- 14:40He gets a hold of Elijah, and Elijah gives him commands that
- 14:45required humility. And Naman complied and he was
- 14:48healed miraculously. And Elijah, who was the conduit
- 14:53through which God performed this miracle, is approached by Naman.
- 14:57And Naman is so moved, he now acknowledges the God of Israel
- 15:00is a true God. How can I pay you back?
- 15:04How can I compensate? How how can I express my
- 15:08appreciation? And Elijah was a wise minister.
- 15:10He understood this is a Gentile who's just being introduced to
- 15:15the God of Israel. In no way am I going to take
- 15:18anything from him less he should be confused and think to himself
- 15:23that this relationship with this living God is a matter of give
- 15:26and take. I want to show him that God is a
- 15:30God of grace. So he looks at name, and he
- 15:32says, go your way. I'm not asking anything from
- 15:36you. And so Naman, with his
- 15:38entourage, make the way back to Syria.
- 15:41But who's there listening in on that conversation?
- 15:43Elisha's servant, his personal assistant.
- 15:49And when he discovers this, we have the record of his thinking
- 15:52where he says, my master is foolish, essentially.
- 15:55Why would he let go of this opportunity?
- 15:58And so when Elisha is tucked away in his own place, Naman is
- 16:02on his way to Syria, Gehazi makes his way and follows
- 16:06Naaman. And when he follows him, I want
- 16:08you to see what he asks of him in Second Kings chapter 5 verse
- 16:1221. In Second Kings 521, we read.
- 16:23So Gehazi followed Naaman. And when Naaman saw someone
- 16:27running after him, he got down from the chariot to meet him and
- 16:31said, is all well. And he said all is well.
- 16:36Pause we've seen that before in Second Kings, haven't we?
- 16:41We've seen this before with a Shunamite woman when her son
- 16:45died approached Elijah and Elijah asked her is all well and
- 16:48she said what all is well? It was true for her, her soul
- 16:52was well. She had trust and faith in God.
- 16:55Now Gehazi is being asked us all well and he says all is well is
- 16:58all well with Gehazi soul. No, it's it's very dangerous to
- 17:03perceive the condition of our own spirituality outside of
- 17:06God's light. Ghazi thinks all is well, at
- 17:11least he says it, when in reality it's not.
- 17:13And we're about to discover that all is well.
- 17:15My Master has sent me to say that I've just now come to me
- 17:20from the Hill Country of Ephraim, two young men of the
- 17:23sons of the prophets. Please give them a talent of
- 17:26silver and two changes of clothing.
- 17:30What is this deception? What is this manipulation?
- 17:35What is this? It's greed.
- 17:39And keep in mind exactly what Ghazi requested because at first
- 17:42it won't seem to match what Elijah says when he confronts
- 17:45his assistant. Scroll down now to verse 25.
- 17:50This is when Ghazi makes his way back to Elijah's presence and he
- 17:57thought that he can escape the prophet's knowledge of his
- 18:02whereabouts. Second Kings 525 He went in and
- 18:05stood before his master, and Elijah said to him, Where have
- 18:09you been, Ghazi? And he said, Your servant went
- 18:13nowhere. But he said to him, Did not my
- 18:16heart go when the man turned from his chariot to meet you?
- 18:20Was it a time to accept money and garments, olive orchards and
- 18:24vineyards, sheep and oxen, male servants and female servants?
- 18:32Elijah, what are you talking about?
- 18:35What did we read back earlier? What?
- 18:36What did Gehazi ask for specifically?
- 18:39Just just some money and a few changes of clothing, right?
- 18:44But what does Elijah include? He includes all.
- 18:46Look at this catalog. Was it a time to accept not just
- 18:49money and garments, but olive orchards and vineyards, sheep,
- 18:51oxen, male servants and female servants?
- 18:56What's happening here? I'll tell you exactly what's
- 18:59happening here. God not only revealed to Elijah
- 19:04what Gehazi asked from Naaman, he also showed the prophet what
- 19:09truly lodged in Gehazi's heart. His true aspirations and
- 19:17desires. His true ambitions to acquire
- 19:21property, states, servants, to live in luxury.
- 19:28That's what Gehazi really wanted, and he was willing to,
- 19:34even with his ministerial position, even with the
- 19:38vulnerability of people's needs, execute his authority and take
- 19:43advantage of others in order to realize that aim in life.
- 19:50In other words, God knew what was really in Ghazi's heart.
- 19:57It wasn't to glorify God. It wasn't to extend grace.
- 20:00It wasn't to preach the truth. It was to actually utilize his
- 20:06position to pursue a selfish ambition, thinking that it was
- 20:10indiscernible. Clearly he forgot to pay
- 20:17attention or remember what Solomon prayed back in First
- 20:20Kings chapter 8, that God alone knows the hearts of all the
- 20:23children of mankind. There's an amazing contrast
- 20:28between Gehazi and Naman in this story.
- 20:31If you remember, Naman earlier, after being told that he can go
- 20:36back in peace, was concerned with something.
- 20:40He was concerned about returning to his duties because he was a
- 20:43high official in the Syrian government and his
- 20:46responsibilities were vast. But he also had a close
- 20:48relationship with the king of Syria.
- 20:51And one of the things that Naman had to do was assist this aged
- 20:54king into the temple of a false God.
- 21:00And when he would bow down to worship this false God, he would
- 21:03lean on Naaman's arm, and Naaman would have to bow down with him
- 21:07in order to help him. So he brings his predicament up
- 21:12to Elijah, and he says, oh, please, may your Lord pardon me
- 21:18when I do this. And Elijah reassures Naaman,
- 21:22Yes, I God understands you may have to physically prostate
- 21:26yourself, not because you're worshipping this false God, but
- 21:29because you have this position that requires you to help this
- 21:31elderly king realize that you should be in peace.
- 21:37Be in peace. But then now Fast forward in the
- 21:40same chapter, we learn what we just read it that you have
- 21:44Gehazi who outwardly look like a true minister.
- 21:48What was his posture? He stood in the presence of his
- 21:51master. When somebody stands in the
- 21:53presence of someone else, that often means that they are ready
- 21:55to serve at a command. He looks spiritual.
- 22:00He looked promising. He was the closest man to
- 22:03Elijah. But inwardly, what did he want?
- 22:09What did he truly desire? Fields and servants and
- 22:15affluence and was willing to even exploit others through the
- 22:21ministry to arrive there. Teaching us what God knows.
- 22:30Our hearts, He does not evaluate externally.
- 22:35He looks internally and He considers the purity, the
- 22:39sincerity of what we long for. He looks at our hearts above all
- 22:45else. You know, Gehazi and Judas
- 22:47Iscariot share many similarities.
- 22:51From the outside, Judas appeared to be what?
- 22:53A genuine disciple. I mean, he, with the other 11,
- 22:55walked away from their daily routines, the familiarity to
- 22:59follow this rabbi wherever he went.
- 23:02More than that, don't forget this, that when Jesus
- 23:04commissioned the 12 along with other disciples, Judas himself
- 23:08operated under the same power that these others did.
- 23:11Through Judas's hands, the sick were healed.
- 23:15Through Judas's voice, in the name of Jesus, demons were cast
- 23:18out. I mean, from the outside, this,
- 23:21this man, Judas looked like the real deal.
- 23:24Even the others among him thought the same.
- 23:29But there was someone in the midst.
- 23:30There was someone in Judas's life who really knew his true
- 23:32character, Christ, and regularly in the Gospels, especially,
- 23:38especially in the Gospel of John, the Holy Spirit shows us
- 23:41how Christ all along in that three-year tenure in a
- 23:44three-year ministry route, understood exactly who Judas was
- 23:49even though he was on staff. Do you remember what Jesus said
- 23:53in John 6 verse 70? Didn't I choose you the 12?
- 23:57And yet one of you is what a devil.
- 24:01Not one of you is going to be a devil.
- 24:03One of you right now is a devil. What a shocking claim.
- 24:11What does it show us that God knows?
- 24:15He can see through the veneers of gehazis and Judases, and He
- 24:21also sees the sincerity in the purity of unformed people like
- 24:25Naman who have the desire to to worship the true God but may not
- 24:29know all that He is all that he has to offer.
- 24:36The revelation of God's awareness of what resides in our
- 24:38hearts, it's so prevalent in the Bible.
- 24:41It goes back as far as Genesis, and I want to show you one
- 24:47strong example of this from Genesis chapter 20.
- 24:50Let's turn that together. What's happening in Genesis 20,
- 24:55at least in the beginning of it, Abraham makes his way to Guerrar
- 24:58with his family. And when he arrives at Guerrar,
- 25:03like before, he was afraid because of the beauty of his
- 25:07wife. You imagine that he was so
- 25:12worried that people would perceive and see just how
- 25:15beautiful his wife was that he had to lie.
- 25:19And he did this before so that no one would try to take him out
- 25:23if he stood in the way from having her.
- 25:26So Abraham repeats his mistake. Sarah, if anybody asks you, tell
- 25:32them you're my sister. So they do that, and Abimelech,
- 25:38the king of Gerard, took notice of Sarah.
- 25:41So he takes her for himself and all.
- 25:45Thank God he supervised over his plan of redemption.
- 25:50Because Abraham, this man of faith supposedly right, blew it
- 25:59at a very critical time. The Lord had promised Abraham
- 26:06that within a year's time Sarah would conceive the miracle
- 26:09child, and he still is willing to put her at risk of being
- 26:13taken by another man, which would what compromise that plan?
- 26:19So God himself intervenes, and this is what we read in Genesis
- 26:2220, verse 3. But God came to Abimelech in a
- 26:25dream by night and said to him, Behold, you are a dead man
- 26:30because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man's
- 26:34wife. Now Abimelech had not approached
- 26:37her, so he said, Lord, will you kill an innocent people?
- 26:42Did he not himself say to me, She is my sister?
- 26:44And she herself said He is my brother.
- 26:48In the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands, I
- 26:55have done this. And God said to him in the
- 27:00dream, Yes, I know that you have done this in the integrity of
- 27:06your heart. And it was I who kept you from
- 27:09sinning against me. Isn't that amazing?
- 27:13Sinning against me? You know, some people say, well,
- 27:18it's not. It can't be wrong if I'm not
- 27:19hurting anybody. Well, actually you are hurting
- 27:21someone with every sin you commit, and that's God sinning
- 27:26against me. Therefore, I did not let you
- 27:29touch her. What kind of trouble might have
- 27:33Abimelech got himself into? If God was a God who judged only
- 27:38actions and not considering motives, intentions or even
- 27:47ignorance, I believe like would have ended right there and then.
- 27:53Actually, why do we see this in our Bibles?
- 27:58Because the Lord wants to show us that he looks at the heart.
- 28:04And Abimelech confesses that he did not pursue Sarah knowing
- 28:07that she was another man's wife. He was under the impression that
- 28:10she was single and therefore available.
- 28:15In other words, this man was not driven by sinful compulsion.
- 28:19He wasn't perverted. He didn't have evil intent.
- 28:23In this moment, the basis of his actions was pure, and God
- 28:25Himself confirmed it. I can, I can confirm and affirm,
- 28:29Abimelech, that you are innocent in this regard.
- 28:36What lessons can we take from this?
- 28:38I think a few. Let me offer a couple.
- 28:42Number one, it's very likely that you and I have made
- 28:44mistakes of various kinds, some more consequential, some less,
- 28:51yet they arose from a place of moral integrity.
- 28:56You know who makes these kind of mistakes?
- 28:59Very often young Christians when they first get saved, who do a
- 29:05lot of things from the place of righteous zeal but lack wisdom.
- 29:11And sometimes in their decisions, sometimes with their
- 29:14words or confrontations or even their attempts to do something
- 29:17right, they do more harm than good, right?
- 29:21Maybe if we're all a little bit honest, we can say, yeah, that's
- 29:24that's true of me when I was first born again.
- 29:25There's some things that I think back to, and I'm like, I'm
- 29:28cringing just thinking about it. And if you have a particularly
- 29:34sensitive conscience, that may be enough to help you not be
- 29:40able to move on from past blunders.
- 29:47You're almost chained to your past mistakes because you can't
- 29:49seem to just get over how you missed it.
- 29:54And yet we come to a truth like this that reminds us that God
- 29:57sees the integrity of our hearts.
- 30:01He sees the innocence. He sees how maybe we were even
- 30:07operating under a limited awareness of how things should
- 30:10be done, but we really want to do something good.
- 30:16So if that describes you, take take comfort in knowing that the
- 30:19Lord's assessment of our choices are not surface level.
- 30:21They are never surface level. He's incredibly patient.
- 30:29He considers other factors. He he looks at our motives.
- 30:33He looks at our limited knowledge that we may have had
- 30:36at the time of our failures. Another point to consider is how
- 30:43there will be times when we will be misjudged by others,
- 30:48sometimes even accused, while God fully recognizes our
- 30:52innocence. When David sent some of his
- 30:57servants to the land of the Ammonites to console and comfort
- 31:02Hanoon, who was the son of the late King Mahash, the Princess
- 31:07of the Ammonites whispered in the ear of Hanoon and convinced
- 31:11them David sent spies here. You think that this is an act of
- 31:18kindness? No, he's here to actually see
- 31:21your weak spots. This is his intelligence agency
- 31:25and Hanoon believed him. He believed the whisper of the
- 31:31Princess and it caused an unnecessary war.
- 31:35Here's David just trying to do the right thing.
- 31:38And it was misunderstood, misconstrued, and caused
- 31:43bloodshed. You and I have to be prepared to
- 31:47be misunderstood or wrongly accused by others, yet at the
- 31:49same time be ready to take refuge and to take comfort in
- 31:53the thought that God Himself knows the integrity of our
- 31:59hearts, even if others do not, because ultimately His judgement
- 32:07matters the most. I love the Apostle Paul for many
- 32:11reasons. One of the things that I so
- 32:14appreciate about this great man of God is the confidence he had
- 32:18in living in light of God's evaluation of his efforts, his
- 32:22ministry, his character. This man who sacrificed so much,
- 32:27This man who took beatings, this man who faced death on on behalf
- 32:31of others for the sake of the gospel, for the sake of other
- 32:34believers, at one point was severely scrutinized by these
- 32:39Corinthian Christians, these Corinthians who dare to question
- 32:45his ambitions and his motives, to compare him to other
- 32:48teachers. And so at one point in his first
- 32:51letter to this group of believers, he says it's a very
- 32:54small thing for me to be judged by you or by any human court.
- 33:00In fact, I love this part. He goes on to say I don't even
- 33:03judge myself. I don't rely of my own
- 33:07assessment of my own heart because sometimes I'm too hard
- 33:10on myself or sometimes I'm too light.
- 33:13No, no, no, He ends up saying this.
- 33:16It is the Lord who judges me ultimately is God.
- 33:21It's God who knows the depth of my being.
- 33:25It's the Lord who knows who knows why I do what I do.
- 33:30It's a very small thing to be judged by you, Corinthians.
- 33:34My identity is not in your assessment, your conclusions,
- 33:39your speculations, your comparisons.
- 33:42That's not where I find my identity, nor do I find it in
- 33:46any human court. I rest in God and in God alone.
- 33:58Oh, we can go on and on with examples, can't we?
- 34:01You're saying, can you just pause it and remind me why we're
- 34:04going through these passages? Because I want you to leave with
- 34:06one thing this afternoon. God knows your heart.
- 34:10That's it. But I believe there are at least
- 34:14more applications that we can drive.
- 34:17How should we respond to these scriptural insights?
- 34:19What do we do with them? I believe that there are two
- 34:23major applications, one that deals with our horizontal
- 34:27attitudes toward one another and one that concerns our vertical
- 34:30relationship with the Lord. Listen to the words of the
- 34:34apostle Paul on how we should treat one another, perceive one
- 34:39another in light of the fact that God knows our hearts.
- 34:42Turn with me to the New Testament now in First
- 34:44Corinthians chapter 4 and look at verse 5.
- 35:02Therefore do not pronounce judgement before the time before
- 35:06the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden
- 35:10in darkness, and will disclose the purposes of the heart.
- 35:17Then each one will receive his commendation from God.
- 35:22So again, the Corinthians were guilty of making judgments of
- 35:26various leaders in the church, including the apostle Paul, to
- 35:30the point that it was causing divisions and fostering
- 35:34spiritual pride. And so he's confronting this and
- 35:37he's reminds this group of believers, hey, hey, hey, hey,
- 35:40hey. God alone knows the intentions
- 35:44of the human heart. You can't come to a definite
- 35:51dogmatic arrival at why a minister does what he does.
- 35:56That's the context here. Because sometimes our judgments
- 36:00are premature. Sometimes there are conclusions
- 36:02based on incomplete information. Other times they are influenced
- 36:08by our own insecurities. So Paul tells his believers
- 36:15there is a time coming though, where the Lord will reach down
- 36:19into every heart and pull out the intentions of it.
- 36:27So you Corinthians, instead of spending your energy and causing
- 36:31problems with verbalizing and sharing your personal
- 36:34understanding supposedly of why someone is the way they are or
- 36:38why they preach or minister or serve in the way that they do,
- 36:43reserve that for examining your own heart and preparing your own
- 36:49heart to be evaluated by God Himself.
- 36:54And that's perhaps one way we can grow in our sanctification
- 36:57regarding this truth. He says that there will be a
- 37:05time coming when the purpose of the heart will be revealed, and
- 37:08that's God's prerogative alone. You know, we live in an age
- 37:14today where everybody can grab a microphone and share something
- 37:18with the world. And especially with the
- 37:23political climate we're in and how everything is accessible,
- 37:27the culture war, all these things, the things people share
- 37:31online that they're not even sure about and the havoc and
- 37:36confusion and chaos that it's causing.
- 37:41Listen, if the world wants to do that, let them do that.
- 37:43But nuts, let's not bring it in the church instead of murmuring,
- 37:52instead of trying to be your own private investigator and
- 37:55bringing others in and deeming if somebody's truly righteous,
- 38:00really authentic, leave that to God and worry about your own
- 38:05heart. But there's a vertical element
- 38:10to this. Do you remember what David's
- 38:11prayer was after getting one of the most comprehensive
- 38:14explanations of the wonders and purposes of the word of God in
- 38:17Psalm 19, we we spoke about this Psalm back at the conference.
- 38:20But let me remind you how He ends, how He responds right
- 38:25after giving this wonderful description, this bullet point
- 38:30kind of explanation of the applications and the treasures
- 38:34of the Word of God. This is what He says in Psalm
- 38:3719, verse 14. Let the words of my mouth and
- 38:44the meditations of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, oh
- 38:49Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. I do not believe for a moment
- 38:54that it is accidental that immediately right after speaking
- 38:57and giving a catalog of what the Word of God is and what it can
- 39:00perform in in a human soul, David responds in this way.
- 39:09It's as though David arrived at the same conclusion that you and
- 39:11I did this afternoon that the Lord he sees the heart.
- 39:19He considers the heart. And so David doesn't end his
- 39:23prayer with let the words of my mouth that deals with outward
- 39:27piety. That's what other people can
- 39:29hear. He says, not not just outside.
- 39:34I'm asking you clean this heart, the hidden private secret part
- 39:47of who I am. I'm asking you, God, that the
- 39:51meditations that nobody else knows about would be acceptable
- 39:56in your sight. This is David's response to what
- 40:02he knew about the Word of God and what you and I are being
- 40:05reminded of in the Word of God, that He sees our hearts.
- 40:11May that be our prayer also. Let's do that now.
- 40:36And before, before I even pray, I want to give you a short time
- 40:42to do business with God. And perhaps that looks like you
- 40:48worshiping the Lord in with Glee because you had these
- 40:57aspirations that were never realized.
- 40:58You never understood why you prayed about it.
- 41:02You're willing to give up everything for it, and God has a
- 41:05different path for you. And you might be frustrated with
- 41:09your life, but oh, remember that the Lord praise David for his
- 41:12desires alone. Take comfort, servant of Christ.
- 41:17If that's you, perhaps you're riddled with guilt even still in
- 41:222025 because of things that have been done.
- 41:27Though you did it from a pure place.
- 41:32Take comfort in knowing that God knows your heart.
- 41:36The integrity of it may have not been the best choice.
- 41:39It may have been a wrong action. Not the wisest, but be liberated
- 41:47and move on in the grace of God. You might be a Ghazi in this
- 41:54place and your heart is filled with worldly ambitions, carnal
- 42:04cravings. You know the right words, you
- 42:09look the part, but there is nothing of God in your
- 42:17affections and your ambitions. It can change today.
- 42:22God can renew that heart of yours and fill it with the
- 42:26desires that were meant to be there.
- 42:35Lord, we pray that the words of our mouths and the meditations
- 42:38of our hearts leaving this place would be acceptable in your
- 42:42sight. Thank you, Lord, that You were
- 42:46not just the great revealer of hearts.
- 42:47You were the healer of hearts. You are the regenerator of
- 42:51hearts. You perform spiritual heart
- 42:57transplants. You can take these Stony hearts,
- 43:00these cold icy hearts, these critical hearts, and put your
- 43:09heart instead. And we pray that we would
- 43:14experience that, though we will never know it perfectly on this
- 43:19side of eternity, we want as much of it as possible.
- 43:24And so low. We sit here patiently and humbly
- 43:28asking for you to do what only you can do.
- 43:31In these hearts, in Christ's name, we pray.
- 43:36Amen. If you desire to stand and sing
- 43:39with us, you can do that. If you still want to stay seated
- 43:43so that you can better pray and seek the Lord, you can do that
- 43:48as well. Whatever you choose to do in
- 43:50this moment, do it from a place of worship.
- 43:54Let's let's seek the Lord and thank Him for speaking to us
- 43:56today, Yeah.
