- 0:00Welcome to Kid Cast Daily, where we bring news, trivia, fun
- 0:04facts, and more just for curious kids like you.
- 0:07Today we're kicking off a super exciting topic, Taekwondo.
- 0:11That's right, we're about to jump, spin, and kick our way
- 0:14into the world of this amazing martial art.
- 0:17So tie up your imaginary belts and let's get ready for a
- 0:20journey that's all about energy, discipline, and maybe even a
- 0:24little bit of flying. Well, almost.
- 0:26Let's start with the basics. Have you ever seen someone in a
- 0:29white uniform with a colored belt doing high kicks or cool
- 0:33moves? Chances are they were practicing
- 0:36Taekwondo. But what exactly is Taekwondo?
- 0:39The word Taekwondo comes from Korea, and it's made-up of three
- 0:42parts. Tae means to kick with the foot,
- 0:45Kwan means to punch with the fist, and do means the way or
- 0:48the art. So Taekwondo is the art of
- 0:51kicking and punching, but it's not just about fighting or
- 0:54looking cool. It's really about learning
- 0:57self-control, respect, and how to use your body and mind
- 1:00together. Imagine your body is like a
- 1:02superhero's tool belt. Taekwondo helps you train every
- 1:05part. Your legs for powerful kicks,
- 1:08your arms for strong blocks and punches, and your mind for focus
- 1:11and confidence. It's a bit like being a ninja,
- 1:14but with rules and respect for others.
- 1:16Taekwondo isn't just any martial art, it's one of the most
- 1:19popular ones in the world. Millions of people in over 200
- 1:23countries practice Taekwondo. In fact, it's even an Olympic
- 1:27sport. That means athletes from all
- 1:29over the world compete in Taekwondo at the Olympics.
- 1:32Imagine standing on a big stage, showing off your best moves in
- 1:36front of people from every country.
- 1:37Pretty cool, right? Now, let's talk about the
- 1:40uniform. Taekwondo students wear
- 1:42something called Adobok. It's usually white and looks a
- 1:45bit like pajamas, but it's actually special clothing
- 1:48designed to let you move freely. The most important part of the
- 1:51uniform is the belt. When you start Taekwondo, you
- 1:55wear a white belt, which means you're a beginner.
- 1:57As you learn new skills and get better, you are new belts in
- 2:00different colors. It's kind of like leveling up in
- 2:03a video game. Each belt color represents a new
- 2:06level. Yellow, green, blue, red, and
- 2:09finally black. The black belt is like reaching
- 2:12the top of a mountain. It means you've learned a lot,
- 2:15but there's always more to discover.
- 2:17Speaking of belts, did you know that in ancient times, students
- 2:21only had white belts? Over time, as they trained,
- 2:24their belts would get dirty and change color from sweat, dirt,
- 2:28and hard work. That's one of the reasons why
- 2:30belt colors were introduced, to show progress and dedication.
- 2:34Now let's dive into what you actually do in a Taekwondo
- 2:37class. Classes usually start with a
- 2:39warm up. You might run, jump, or stretch
- 2:42to get your body ready just like you would before playing soccer
- 2:46or basketball. Then comes practicing basic
- 2:48moves. In Taekwondo, these moves are
- 2:51called techniques. The main techniques are kicks,
- 2:54punches, blocks, and stances. Let's break those down.
- 2:58Kicks are super important in Taekwondo.
- 3:00In fact, Taekwondo is famous for its high, fast, and spinning
- 3:04kicks. Some of the most popular kicks
- 3:07are the front kick, Roundhouse kick, and sidekick.
- 3:10Picture trying to kick a soccer ball, but instead of the ball,
- 3:14you're aiming at an imaginary target in the air.
- 3:16That's kind of what a Taekwondo kick feels like.
- 3:19Punches in Taekwondo are quick and snappy.
- 3:22You keep your hands in a tight fist, tuck your elbows in, and
- 3:25punch straight ahead. It's not about being the
- 3:28strongest, but about being fast and accurate, like a superhero
- 3:31shooting webs or lasers. Blocks are how you protect
- 3:34yourself. Imagine you're holding a shield
- 3:37in front of you to stop a snowball or a water balloon.
- 3:40That's what a block does. It keeps you safe from an
- 3:42opponent's moves. Stances are like the foundation
- 3:45of a house. They help you stay balanced and
- 3:48strong. There are different stances for
- 3:50different moves. Some are wide and low, some are
- 3:53narrow and tall. If you've ever tried standing on
- 3:55one foot or balancing on a log, you know how important balance
- 3:59is. Taekwondo isn't just about
- 4:01physical skills, though. It's also about using your mind.
- 4:04Every class, students learn the five tenets of Taekwondo.
- 4:08These are like the superhero rules for being a great person.
- 4:12They are courtesy, which means being polite, integrity, being
- 4:16honest and doing the right thing, perseverance, never
- 4:19giving up, self-control, staying calm and in charge of your
- 4:23actions, and indomitable spirit, being brave and strong even when
- 4:27things are tough. These tenets help you become not
- 4:30just a better martial artist, but a better friend, student,
- 4:34and person. Here's a fun fact, Taekwondo
- 4:37students often learn to count in Korean.
- 4:39For example, one is Hana, 2 is dual, and 3 is set.
- 4:43So if your instructor says Hana dual set during class, you know
- 4:48it's time to do 3 kicks or punches.
- 4:51It's like learning a secret code.
- 4:53Another cool part of Taekwondo is patterns, also called pumse.
- 4:57Patterns are a series of moves put together in a sequence,
- 5:01almost like a dance. Each pattern tells a story and
- 5:04helps you practice your techniques.
- 5:06When you perform a pattern, you need to remember the order of
- 5:09the moves, keep your balance, and show confidence.
- 5:12It's like performing a dance routine, but with blocks,
- 5:15punches, and kicks. Sometimes students practice
- 5:18sparring. Sparring is a safe, controlled
- 5:21way to practice techniques with a partner.
- 5:23You wear protective gear like helmets and pads, and you follow
- 5:27strict rules to make sure everyone stays safe.
- 5:29It's not about hurting each other, it's about learning
- 5:32timing, distance, and respect. Did you know that Taekwondo was
- 5:36developed in Korea over 2000 years ago?
- 5:39At first, it was used by soldiers to defend themselves.
- 5:43Over time, it became a way for people to stay healthy, learn
- 5:46discipline, and have fun. In the 1950s, Taekwondo started
- 5:50to spread around the world and now you can find Taekwondo
- 5:53schools nearly everywhere, even in small towns.
- 5:56Taekwondo isn't just for grown-ups.
- 5:59In fact, many students start as kids just like you.
- 6:03Some of the world's best Taekwondo athletes began their
- 6:06journey when they were as young as six or seven years old.
- 6:09It doesn't matter if you're tall or short, fast or slow.
- 6:12What matters is your effort and attitude.
- 6:15Here's another Did you know moment?
- 6:17The fastest kick ever recorded in Taekwondo was over 136 mph.
- 6:22That's faster than a cheetah running at full speed.
- 6:25Of course, you don't have to kick that fast to enjoy
- 6:27Taekwondo, but it's fun to know how powerful the human body can
- 6:31be with practice. Taekwondo is also about teamwork
- 6:34and community. When you join a Taekwondo class,
- 6:37you become part of a group. You help each other, cheer each
- 6:40other on, and celebrate when someone earns a new belt.
- 6:44It's a little like being on a sports team, but with a focus on
- 6:47respect and kindness. Have you ever heard someone
- 6:50shout keyhop during a martial arts class or in a movie?
- 6:54Key hop is a loud yell that students use when they kick or
- 6:56punch. It helps you focus and gives you
- 6:59extra power. It's kind of like a superhero
- 7:01battle cry. Next time you're practicing a
- 7:03move, even in slow motion, try letting out a strong key hap and
- 7:08see how it feels. Let's talk about some famous
- 7:10Taekwondo practitioners. Did you know that some movie
- 7:13stars like Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme studied
- 7:17Taekwondo? Even some superheroes in movies
- 7:20use Taekwondo moves during their fight scenes.
- 7:23But you don't have to be famous to practice Taekwondo.
- 7:26Anyone can do it. Taekwondo can also help you in
- 7:29everyday life. For example, if you ever feel
- 7:32nervous before a big test or a soccer game, you can use the
- 7:35breathing and focus skills from Taekwondo to calm down and do
- 7:38your best. And if you ever stumble or trip,
- 7:41your balance training might help you stay on your feet.
- 7:44Here's a fun imagination exercise.
- 7:46Pretend you're standing on a mountain looking out at the
- 7:49world. You take a deep breath, make a
- 7:51strong stance, and get ready to show your best kick.
- 7:54That's the feeling Taekwondo gives you.
- 7:56Confidence, strength, and the belief that you can achieve
- 8:00anything with practice and patience.
- 8:02So let's recap what we've learned today about Taekwondo.
- 8:05We discovered that Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that means
- 8:09the art of kicking and punching. It's not just about moves, but
- 8:12also about respect, self-control, and never giving
- 8:16up. Students wear adobok and earn
- 8:18colored belts. As they get better, they learn
- 8:21kicks, punches, blocks and stances and practice patterns
- 8:25called poom, say Taekwondo classes help you become strong,
- 8:29balanced and focused like a real life superhero.
- 8:32And most importantly.
