- 0:01Speaker 1: In this corner, standing at 6'5, weight class unknown, but
- 0:04Speaker 1: hailing from the city of sin, put your hands together
- 0:07Speaker 1: for Jamison Welch. And in this corner, standing at 5'10,
- 0:11Speaker 1: weighing in at pounds, and coming to us from his
- 0:14Speaker 1: super secret bunker with no AC in Tucson, Arizona, put
- 0:18Speaker 1: your hands together for Luis Montemayor.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Welcome back to another episode of Mixed Company Podcast. Of course,
- 0:28Speaker 3: I'm going to have the show. My name is Jameson.
- 0:30Speaker 3: As always, I'm joined by Luis. Luis, what's going on, man?
- 0:33Speaker 2: Hey, Jameson.
- 0:34Speaker 4: I got something cool that happened over last weekend that
- 0:37Speaker 4: I wanted to do a quick promo for. Luckily, I
- 0:40Speaker 4: got invited to Phoenix to the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Central
- 0:45Speaker 4: Boxing Gym. We've talked about that gym before because that's
- 0:48Speaker 4: where I went to interview Sean Porter a few months ago.
- 0:52Speaker 4: It's a historic place. Mike Tyson trained out of there.
- 0:54Speaker 4: Oscar Deleuze trained out of there. The Benavides family trained
- 0:58Speaker 4: out of there. And actually, it was a reopening because
- 1:01Speaker 4: it was purchased by Jose Benavides Sr., who I got
- 1:04Speaker 4: to meet, got to interview. And, you know, there's a
- 1:09Speaker 4: full video of the interview up on our YouTube right
- 1:11Speaker 4: now by the time this airs. So go check that out.
- 1:14Speaker 4: Our YouTube channel is in our show notes, or you
- 1:16Speaker 4: can find a playlist on the 19 Media Group channel.
- 1:19Speaker 4: But it was so cool getting to meet the Jose
- 1:21Speaker 4: Benavides Sr. For those of you who don't know, David
- 1:24Speaker 4: Benavides' father.
- 1:25Speaker 2: So, yeah.
- 1:27Speaker 4: He's kind of a big deal to, you know, to,
- 1:29Speaker 4: to say the least. And, uh, you know, shout out
- 1:31Speaker 4: to Emily Gurdon, friend of the show who invited me
- 1:33Speaker 4: out for, for the event. And, uh, it's just so cool,
- 1:36Speaker 4: you know, to get to meet a legend and, and
- 1:38Speaker 4: the gym has such a, such a great legacy. And,
- 1:41Speaker 4: you know, the whole thing that they kept talking about
- 1:43Speaker 4: is for the kids, you know, for, uh, they do
- 1:46Speaker 4: it to get kids involved in boxing, keep kids off
- 1:49Speaker 4: the street, you know, give them something cool to do. And, and, uh,
- 1:52Speaker 4: you know, and maybe build some future champions out of Phoenix. So,
- 1:57Speaker 4: Just wanted to put that out there and say that
- 1:59Speaker 4: I got to make it. I'm not including any of
- 2:01Speaker 4: it on this episode. I want to keep that as
- 2:02Speaker 4: a bonus on the YouTube. But yeah, it was really cool.
- 2:06Speaker 4: And just doing the show, not just fun, but lets
- 2:09Speaker 4: me do cool things like that, like meet Jose Benavides.
- 2:13Speaker 4: It's just great. I know you've done a lot more
- 2:16Speaker 4: of this hobnobbing with athletes and celebrities and that, but
- 2:19Speaker 4: that stuff is kind of new to me. So I'm
- 2:21Speaker 4: just super excited when I get an opportunity.
- 2:24Speaker 2: No, that's cool, man. That's very cool. That's dope, man.
- 2:26Speaker 2: You're going to enjoy yourself.
- 2:27Speaker 3: It's always about networking experiences and meeting people.
- 2:31Speaker 2: All that falls into one. So that's really cool. I'm
- 2:32Speaker 2: glad you're able to attend that. That's really cool.
- 2:35Speaker 4: Yeah. So like I said, check out our YouTube channel. Uh,
- 2:38Speaker 4: but let's move on to a big fight that happened
- 2:40Speaker 4: over the weekend. Very exciting fight. Emmanuel Navarrete versus Shaki Foster.
- 2:45Speaker 4: We talked about it last week. I was very excited, man.
- 2:48Speaker 4: Did that fight not disappoint? Uh, despite the fact that
- 2:52Speaker 4: my guy, Emanuel Navarrete, you know, big fan of him,
- 2:55Speaker 4: got to interview him as well, you know, thanks to
- 2:57Speaker 4: this show, just couldn't hold his own against Shaki Foster,
- 3:02Speaker 4: who came in with speed, position, strength, and just completely
- 3:06Speaker 4: dominated that fight. And it was really, at the end
- 3:10Speaker 4: of the day, you know, I'm a fan of the sport.
- 3:12Speaker 4: I want to see exciting fights. Yeah, I'm above that,
- 3:15Speaker 4: but Navarrete lost, of course. But, you know, all respect
- 3:18Speaker 4: to Shaki Foster for, you know, being ready to win,
- 3:22Speaker 4: ready to kick ass in that ring. And I just
- 3:24Speaker 4: want to get your take on what happened on Saturday night.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Sometimes a better boxer just wins.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Sometimes one guy is more talented than the other, and
- 3:31Speaker 3: it showed that night.
- 3:32Speaker 2: And nothing against that ready. I mean, if you want
- 3:35Speaker 2: to get a fight, it's just not much you can do.
- 3:36Speaker 3: When you have a guy that's that talented, that much
- 3:39Speaker 3: faster it felt like, able to implement his game plan
- 3:44Speaker 3: in the ring the way he did, it's going to happen. Now,
- 3:46Speaker 3: with that being said, I mean, the bigger question is,
- 3:49Speaker 3: where do we go from here? Because there's other fights
- 3:52Speaker 3: to be made. And we'll probably get to this later
- 3:55Speaker 3: on in the show. But it feels like we've been
- 3:57Speaker 3: disappointed over the last couple of months with all these
- 3:59Speaker 3: potential fights that were supposed to be made that didn't
- 4:01Speaker 3: get made for whatever reason. Now, where does shock fall
- 4:05Speaker 3: into this, right? Obviously, we saw what happened at the
- 4:07Speaker 3: end of the fight with Mammoth Shakur and.
- 4:10Speaker 2: All this and that. We'll see. You know, with Shakur, it's,
- 4:13Speaker 2: you know, it is what it is. It's kind of
- 4:15Speaker 2: getting tiring.
- 4:16Speaker 3: But with that being said, it's good to see another
- 4:18Speaker 3: guy in the mix here. for a big fight or
- 4:21Speaker 3: for a fight that would garner interest and would be
- 4:23Speaker 3: a competitive fight.
- 4:24Speaker 2: That's all you want to see. At the end of
- 4:26Speaker 2: the day, fans just want to see competitive fights. That's it.
- 4:29Speaker 3: We're not asking for guys fighting every other week.
- 4:32Speaker 2: We're not asking for that. We're just asking for competitive-ass fights.
- 4:36Speaker 3: That is it.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Nothing more, nothing less. Yeah.
- 4:39Speaker 4: It's really cool to have somebody that, you know, a
- 4:41Speaker 4: young name that lives up to the hype and now
- 4:44Speaker 4: he's got three belts. He's going for undisputed. He wants
- 4:46Speaker 4: to do that at some point soon.
- 4:48Speaker 2: And, you know, I'm a fan.
- 4:48Speaker 4: I'm definitely going to follow what he does next. I
- 4:51Speaker 4: will say, yes, fans just want to see really good
- 4:54Speaker 4: competitor fights, but man, I can't, I can't avoid talking
- 4:57Speaker 4: about this. Just some fans are just kind of, they
- 5:00Speaker 4: can't stop finding things to complain about. They're saying, Oh,
- 5:03Speaker 4: shock was running.
- 5:04Speaker 3: In the ring.
- 5:04Speaker 4: You know, it wasn't actually fighting. He was, he was
- 5:07Speaker 4: clinching too much. Like, first of all, my man was
- 5:09Speaker 4: using good footwork to hit and not get hit, which
- 5:12Speaker 4: is the glitching he did to, um, stop Navarate from
- 5:17Speaker 4: landing his, uh, landing punches. Also, most of the time
- 5:19Speaker 4: happened either after a really artful dodge or landing some bombs. So, yeah,
- 5:25Speaker 4: I just, I hate how people just kind of pick
- 5:27Speaker 4: certain things. I'm like, it's like, you're just kind of
- 5:29Speaker 4: looking at, you know, Oh, he dodged a bunch of punches. Like, yeah,
- 5:32Speaker 4: but he also landed a shit ton more. You know
- 5:34Speaker 4: what I'm saying? I'll never get it. But, um, you
- 5:38Speaker 4: just kind of want to tear a guy down after
- 5:39Speaker 4: an excellent performance. And it's just dumb. We're here to
- 5:43Speaker 4: see exciting fights and see these athletes at their best.
- 5:47Speaker 4: And Shaq was at his best. Best performance that I've
- 5:49Speaker 4: seen from him up until this point. And yeah, it's
- 5:54Speaker 4: amazing just how, like I said before, Navarrete wasn't invincible
- 5:59Speaker 4: or anything. He's had a loss. He's been dropped once before.
- 6:02Speaker 4: But Shaq very clearly studied Navarrete's style which can be
- 6:08Speaker 4: very difficult to kind of pin down. He's a bit erratic.
- 6:10Speaker 4: You know, he's very aggressive. And, man, he just had
- 6:13Speaker 4: an answer for everything, and it was amazing to see.
- 6:16Speaker 4: And you saw it early on. Like, the first round,
- 6:19Speaker 4: I think the announcer said that no matter if it
- 6:20Speaker 4: didn't land a single punch, it looked like.
- 6:22Speaker 3: When you're fast and you have superior talent, it's a
- 6:27Speaker 3: very hard hill to overcome. It's not impossible, but it's
- 6:30Speaker 3: very hard a hill to overcome, especially if you're not
- 6:32Speaker 3: able to land. If you're not able to get the
- 6:35Speaker 3: guy in trouble... it's very, very difficult, like very, very
- 6:39Speaker 3: difficult to win that fight. But that being said, it's
- 6:42Speaker 3: an entertaining fight nonetheless. Like I said, I'm more curious
- 6:46Speaker 3: about what it sets up going forward. Like that's the
- 6:48Speaker 3: kind of thing we're at. We're at the end of
- 6:50Speaker 3: this year. We have two months left roughly. Obviously there's
- 6:53Speaker 3: not going to be any fights this year between anyone,
- 6:56Speaker 3: but going into 27, I'm interested to see what that
- 6:59Speaker 3: sets up. I'm more curious about that than anything at
- 7:01Speaker 3: the moment.
- 7:02Speaker 4: Sure, and I am too. It's just kind of a
- 7:04Speaker 4: bummer that there were like, you know, a handful of fights,
- 7:07Speaker 4: several that should have been announced or that, you know,
- 7:10Speaker 4: were in talks and that fell apart. Honestly, mostly for
- 7:12Speaker 4: bullshit reasons. It's not like somebody got injured or anything
- 7:14Speaker 4: or had any personal life issues. But yeah, I mean, Haney, Shakur, Kishan,
- 7:23Speaker 4: Ryan Garcia, like all of these fights that, you know,
- 7:25Speaker 4: people should have at the very least maybe announced something
- 7:29Speaker 4: for the beginning of 27 by now, you know? obviously
- 7:33Speaker 4: we're going to see Benavidez back in December, which is awesome.
- 7:35Speaker 4: Speaking of, uh, speaking of the Benavidez family, but yeah,
- 7:39Speaker 4: like it, it was such a great summer and then
- 7:41Speaker 4: falls wasn't too, too bad, but then it was just
- 7:43Speaker 4: one disappointment after another of like, we want to see
- 7:47Speaker 4: these names up on an official announcement and we're just
- 7:51Speaker 4: kind of getting hosed, you know, here. Uh, and it,
- 7:53Speaker 4: and it's been, it's been kind of a bummer. I
- 7:55Speaker 4: don't want to be totally negative because like I said,
- 7:57Speaker 4: we did have, it has been a pretty good year,
- 7:59Speaker 4: a very good year for boxing overall. Right. It's just
- 8:02Speaker 4: kind of like a bunch of disappointments and quick succession
- 8:05Speaker 4: is what it was. But yeah, I mean, I think
- 8:09Speaker 4: definitely having beaten Navarrete in such a clear, dominating fashion,
- 8:16Speaker 4: you can't deny that shock's a star and that a
- 8:18Speaker 4: lot of people are going to be paying attention to
- 8:20Speaker 4: what he's seeing next. And I hope we don't fall
- 8:22Speaker 4: into any more of this kind of bullshit where it's like,
- 8:25Speaker 4: get back in the ring, man, pick an opponent.
- 8:27Speaker 3: You know, ride the wave of, you know, So you're correct,
- 8:32Speaker 3: but also you got to remember, like, going a year
- 8:35Speaker 3: without fighting is crazy. Like, that's something that you just
- 8:39Speaker 3: can't do. You can do it once, but that can't
- 8:43Speaker 3: be the plan. But you have to fight multiple times
- 8:45Speaker 3: a year, but also we don't know what the money's
- 8:47Speaker 3: going to be like next year. Like, I'm not trying
- 8:49Speaker 3: to be, I want to keep politics aside, but the
- 8:52Speaker 3: economy is the economy right now. A lot of people
- 8:54Speaker 3: are going through a lot of stuff right now, and
- 8:57Speaker 3: banking on people being able to travel to Vegas or
- 8:59Speaker 3: Atlanta or D.C.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Or to New York, LA, wherever to watch a fight,
- 9:04Speaker 2: you're asking for a lot.
- 9:05Speaker 3: People don't have that extra grand or two grand or
- 9:07Speaker 3: five grand or whatever it costs for that weekend right now.
- 9:10Speaker 2: They just don't.
- 9:11Speaker 3: So if you're banking on people chugging out a bunch
- 9:13Speaker 3: of money to go to a fight, it better be
- 9:15Speaker 3: a fight worth watching because, hey man, people got fire
- 9:19Speaker 3: sticks and shit. I've seen people watch fights on Twitter
- 9:24Speaker 3: and TikTok. So with all that being said, be careful
- 9:29Speaker 3: what you wish for because... You keep on playing with
- 9:31Speaker 3: the consumer. And the one thing we've learned, especially since COVID,
- 9:35Speaker 3: you can't play with the consumer. Consumer's pissed off now.
- 9:38Speaker 3: We're going to find other ways of consuming the fight.
- 9:43Speaker 3: So they keep playing all these games they want. If
- 9:45Speaker 3: they keep scheduling these fights that no one wants to see,
- 9:47Speaker 3: the consumer will let their voices and their wallets be heard.
- 9:51Speaker 3: And that's not good for anything in boxing at the moment.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Boxing gets the benefit of the doubt way too much.
- 9:57Speaker 3: And I think they've met their match thus far.
- 10:00Speaker 4: Yeah, and there's two levels to this. Yeah, you're setting
- 10:03Speaker 4: up disappointing fights that people don't want to pay to see,
- 10:06Speaker 4: but the people who do have money to spend aren't
- 10:08Speaker 4: spending it on boxing. It's just not as popular as
- 10:10Speaker 4: it used to be. We talked a couple episodes ago,
- 10:12Speaker 4: and this isn't to say like, oh, things actually aren't
- 10:15Speaker 4: that bad. The economy's shitty. Let's all be real. But
- 10:19Speaker 4: the Sphere is full up every weekend, and people are
- 10:21Speaker 4: laying thousands of dollars for that. And that's what they're
- 10:26Speaker 4: going to do. They're not choosing between boxing and going
- 10:29Speaker 4: to a show at the Sphere.
- 10:30Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying?
- 10:32Speaker 4: Boxing seems to be a little bit less on the
- 10:34Speaker 4: forefront of people's minds for entertainment in Vegas and things
- 10:37Speaker 4: that people want to go to. And it's a bummer
- 10:39Speaker 4: because it used to be so synonymous with Vegas, and
- 10:42Speaker 4: that was the thing to do there. And you know, I...
- 10:46Speaker 4: I've been to Vegas twice in 20 years. So it's
- 10:48Speaker 4: not like, you know, is there more to see? Is
- 10:52Speaker 4: there more to do? I don't know. But definitely it
- 10:54Speaker 4: seems to me the vibes is that boxing is no
- 10:57Speaker 4: longer the draw for Vegas visitors.
- 10:59Speaker 3: Well, it depends on what kind of visitor, right? So
- 11:03Speaker 3: normally if there's a fight, people are coming here for
- 11:05Speaker 3: said fight. That's the thing, right? So there's a fight
- 11:09Speaker 3: Saturday evening, whatever Saturday it is. People are in town
- 11:12Speaker 3: for that fight. They're here for that. So that's not
- 11:15Speaker 3: necessarily a concern. because if there's a fight, people will
- 11:18Speaker 3: travel for that. However, here's the problem. You used to
- 11:22Speaker 3: be able to get that fight fan to come without
- 11:25Speaker 3: a doubt. There was no issues. They're coming regardless, no
- 11:28Speaker 3: matter what's fine. Like, for instance, when, like, De La Hoya,
- 11:33Speaker 3: when Mayweather, even Shane Mosley, when he would fight, people
- 11:36Speaker 3: would come to Vegas just cuts. That part's out now.
- 11:40Speaker 3: You got to have a worthy opponent for people to really,
- 11:43Speaker 3: even Ryan Garcia, right? Like, going forward, he's going to
- 11:47Speaker 3: have to fight somebody of good note in order for
- 11:50Speaker 3: people to come out and be like, oh, okay, I
- 11:52Speaker 3: want to be out in Vegas this weekend and watch
- 11:54Speaker 3: him or be in Vegas for this fight. I think
- 11:56Speaker 3: the days of being in Vegas for a tune-up fight,
- 11:59Speaker 3: I don't think those are there anymore.
- 12:01Speaker 2: I think those are out.
- 12:02Speaker 3: I think you have to put together the max people
- 12:04Speaker 3: want to see and be around.
- 12:05Speaker 2: In order to go forward.
- 12:07Speaker 4: No, that's a really good point, and yeah, it's unfortunate
- 12:10Speaker 4: to see, and when money's limited, you're going to pick
- 12:14Speaker 4: and choose your events, and No disrespect to a lot
- 12:18Speaker 4: of these fighters that I really love, but before this weekend,
- 12:23Speaker 4: you say, oh, Shockey Foster is headlining a fight. I
- 12:25Speaker 4: would have been like, well, I'll watch it on TV.
- 12:28Speaker 4: I just respect to the guy. But yeah, there's a
- 12:32Speaker 4: lot of names that we can put out there that
- 12:35Speaker 4: are kind of the similar level. Our guy, Roley Romero,
- 12:40Speaker 4: especially these days, who's going to go for a Roley
- 12:42Speaker 4: Romero headline fight to Vegas and travel and spend the
- 12:44Speaker 4: money hotels all that stuff so yeah but uh but
- 12:50Speaker 4: yeah i mean you know at the end of the
- 12:51Speaker 4: day we're we i we can be kind of bummed
- 12:53Speaker 4: about the state of boxing but i will say saturday
- 12:55Speaker 4: night really reminds me why i love the sport so
- 12:58Speaker 4: much uh and yeah even even being disappointed that my
- 13:02Speaker 4: guy lost uh it was just so cool to see
- 13:05Speaker 4: a talent like shock you know take over and um
- 13:08Speaker 4: I popped in after the fight. I was scrolling on
- 13:10Speaker 4: TikTok and ran across a friend of the show Legend
- 13:13Speaker 4: from Boxing Legends Lounge, Boxing Legends Lounge, holding a live.
- 13:18Speaker 4: And I decided to pop in really quickly after a
- 13:21Speaker 4: few drinks. And, you know, I just kind of went
- 13:24Speaker 4: in there and slurred. And, you know, he had seemed
- 13:26Speaker 4: to be like a majority of black panel. And I
- 13:29Speaker 4: was like, as a Mexican guy, I just want to
- 13:30Speaker 4: come in here and, you know, show respect, you know,
- 13:32Speaker 4: build some bridges and say, big fan of Foster, mad respect.
- 13:36Speaker 4: I'm not going to sit here and say, well, he
- 13:38Speaker 4: didn't do this. He ran. He this, you know, a
- 13:41Speaker 4: hundred percent. I'm a fan. And, you know, that's what
- 13:43Speaker 4: I really want the boxing community to feel like. And
- 13:45Speaker 4: everybody there was very complimentary and just popped in and
- 13:48Speaker 4: out to say that, you know, it wasn't trying to
- 13:50Speaker 4: hang out and embarrass myself after a few, after.
- 13:52Speaker 2: A few, a few rounds.
- 13:53Speaker 4: But, um, so, you know, yeah, that's, that's what we
- 13:56Speaker 4: really want to see is people, fans of the better
- 13:59Speaker 4: fighter of the night. And also never at the class act,
- 14:02Speaker 4: you know, through and through, uh, you know, didn't sit
- 14:05Speaker 4: here and make excuses saying, Oh, I was robbed. And
- 14:07Speaker 4: he had that mess. You know, he said, shot came
- 14:10Speaker 4: in with a better style. He beat me. And that's
- 14:12Speaker 4: what it is. And, um, you know, I remember last
- 14:15Speaker 4: time I saw him at the fight in Phoenix, uh,
- 14:17Speaker 4: he fought a guy named sugar Nunez. Well, I also
- 14:19Speaker 4: got the interview in Spanish, by the way. And at
- 14:22Speaker 4: the end of that fight, they're like, they're hugging each other.
- 14:24Speaker 4: They had their arms around each other. Like they're, you know,
- 14:26Speaker 4: buddies after that, but I think just beat the shit
- 14:28Speaker 4: out of him. And I just, I love to see it.
- 14:30Speaker 4: It was wonderful to see. So, um, yeah, shout out
- 14:33Speaker 4: to both of these guys. Uh, And Navarrete is, you know,
- 14:35Speaker 4: he's not going anywhere. Like he's, he's still a name.
- 14:37Speaker 4: He's still a draw and Mexicans will still show up
- 14:40Speaker 4: for him. It's not like, you know, this, this, yeah.
- 14:42Speaker 4: It's going to derail him or anything. Um, so yeah,
- 14:46Speaker 4: let's see what both of these guys are going to
- 14:48Speaker 4: do soon. Um, moving on to another fight that I
- 14:52Speaker 4: guess should be bigger than it is this weekend's the
- 14:56Speaker 4: return of Canelo versus Christian and Billy, uh, Canelo fight.
- 15:00Speaker 4: I mean, a Canelo fight is always a big deal.
- 15:02Speaker 4: For me personally, I'm always excited. I'm always going to
- 15:04Speaker 4: show up. But we already talked about how the fight
- 15:08Speaker 4: being in Riyadh was, I guess, what? Concerning because of
- 15:13Speaker 4: terrorist attacks that have happened.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Everything.
- 15:15Speaker 4: Everything.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Yes.
- 15:18Speaker 4: Fights still going on in Riyadh. The one thing that
- 15:20Speaker 4: kind of hit me this week is that I realized,
- 15:22Speaker 4: because I was looking at the start time, they're actually fighting.
- 15:25Speaker 4: fighting at like 3 p.m mountain time the main event
- 15:29Speaker 4: it's not a saturday evening fight previously when canela's father
- 15:34Speaker 4: riad he made sure to fight in whatever like whatever
- 15:36Speaker 4: it's six in the morning or something like that so
- 15:38Speaker 4: it would be saturday night 8 p.m 9 p.m whatever
- 15:42Speaker 4: the fact that it's like 6 p.m eastern 3 p.m
- 15:45Speaker 4: pacific like that just goes to show like this fight
- 15:48Speaker 4: has zero juice it's sauceless like What did we get here?
- 15:53Speaker 2: Zero juice and it's going against college football in America.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Good luck.
- 15:56Speaker 3: People will not be watching this fight like that. I'm
- 15:58Speaker 3: just being honest with you. College football is very major
- 16:01Speaker 3: on Saturday midday. I think that if they're having it.
- 16:04Speaker 2: On at 3 p.m. your time, that means it's on
- 16:06Speaker 2: 2 p.m. my time.
- 16:07Speaker 3: That makes some sense because the prime window of college
- 16:10Speaker 3: football is 4.30 my time, 5.30 yours for the primetime games.
- 16:14Speaker 2: So that makes some sense.
- 16:15Speaker 3: But, man, it's not good.
- 16:17Speaker 2: It's not a good move. It's not. It's been a mess.
- 16:21Speaker 3: Everything we've heard about this event, it's been a mess
- 16:23Speaker 3: from the travel to the details to the state. Everything's
- 16:28Speaker 3: been a mess. Like, honestly, at this point, it's almost
- 16:31Speaker 3: like who cares? We know Canelo's going to win.
- 16:33Speaker 2: He's not going to lose. We know he's going to win.
- 16:35Speaker 3: The key thing is getting him back to the States
- 16:37Speaker 3: healthy and safe, and then we'll see what's next.
- 16:40Speaker 2: But I would be surprised if he loses this fight.
- 16:44Speaker 4: Agreed. My problem is that all of the things we've
- 16:48Speaker 4: been talking about this fight hasn't even had to do
- 16:50Speaker 4: with him or Christian and Billy or the results. It's
- 16:53Speaker 4: everything around it, except the conflict in the region, whether
- 16:58Speaker 4: it's going to be safe, people not going to attend
- 17:01Speaker 4: the fight because they were concerned, us worried about fighters
- 17:05Speaker 4: being at risk. The airport that they flew in was
- 17:09Speaker 4: the one that just got bombed a couple weeks ago.
- 17:12Speaker 3: Exactly, exactly.
- 17:13Speaker 4: So this is just, and yeah, for, for something that
- 17:16Speaker 4: we talked about, I mentioned in a previous episode, small venue, very,
- 17:20Speaker 4: very cheap tickets, not making a lot of money, uh,
- 17:23Speaker 4: at 3 PM, you know, on, on a Saturday afternoon,
- 17:27Speaker 4: it's just like, it, it feels like there's no reason
- 17:31Speaker 4: to even have this fight. Like, of course I'm going
- 17:32Speaker 4: to watch, I'm going to go out, I'm going to
- 17:35Speaker 4: watch it. And, you know, hopefully there's, it's a great fight,
- 17:37Speaker 4: but it hits like a, all these barriers to actually
- 17:40Speaker 4: like sitting down and enjoying what, what goes on in
- 17:42Speaker 4: the ring. It just feels like they should have just
- 17:45Speaker 4: canceled it, postponed it, moved it to the States, whatever.
- 17:48Speaker 3: And I don't know, man.
- 17:50Speaker 4: Turk Yelichick says that Canelo said, oh, I'll fight no
- 17:54Speaker 4: matter what happens. Oh, he is not afraid of anything.
- 17:56Speaker 4: But who's to say that's not what the Saudis told
- 17:58Speaker 4: him to say so they could save face?
- 18:01Speaker 3: We have too many non-boxing people in boxing right now.
- 18:05Speaker 3: And that's the biggest issue we have with the sport.
- 18:07Speaker 3: There's too many people who don't know and understand boxing.
- 18:10Speaker 3: and they're making too many decisions. And that's the biggest
- 18:13Speaker 3: problem we have with all the non-fights that we're having,
- 18:16Speaker 3: with all the issues with fights that we are having.
- 18:18Speaker 3: Just in general, it's too many people who are not
- 18:21Speaker 3: boxing experts or people who have boxing in their best interest.
- 18:25Speaker 3: They are involved, and that is the biggest problem we
- 18:27Speaker 3: have in the sport at this time.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Agreed.
- 18:30Speaker 4: And what they're trying to do with the names that
- 18:34Speaker 4: are out there like Canelo and putting him in Riyadh
- 18:36Speaker 4: and the times that he's fighting and the people that
- 18:38Speaker 4: he's fighting like, It's wild considering that just a year ago,
- 18:42Speaker 4: we had a mega fight that everybody was excited about.
- 18:46Speaker 4: I was losing my shit about when Canelo fought Crawford
- 18:50Speaker 4: at a football stadium. What happened in a year? What
- 18:56Speaker 4: changed in a year?
- 18:57Speaker 2: Well, a big part of it is there was no rematch.
- 19:00Speaker 3: So that automatically is tough because there's not another opponent
- 19:04Speaker 3: that's really worthy of any kind of big event right
- 19:07Speaker 3: now for Canelo, right? He's not going to fight Benavidez, so...
- 19:09Speaker 3: He's not going to do that. Then there's no other
- 19:11Speaker 3: big fight that's like, ooh, we can do this at
- 19:15Speaker 3: this venue or whatever.
- 19:17Speaker 2: Just none. There's none at this time.
- 19:19Speaker 3: That might change going forward, but as of right now,
- 19:21Speaker 3: there's no major event that pops up. Canelo's in no
- 19:26Speaker 3: rush to fight right away either. He wasn't in a
- 19:28Speaker 3: rush to fight by May or by June or whatever,
- 19:31Speaker 3: so that's out.
- 19:33Speaker 2: I think a big part of it, Luis, is this, man.
- 19:36Speaker 3: The opponent's definitely one of the reasons, but Once you
- 19:39Speaker 3: wait past six months, it's going to be tough to
- 19:42Speaker 3: generate a buzz because, one, the fight's not domestically. It's
- 19:46Speaker 3: not domestic. It's not in North America. It's not in
- 19:49Speaker 3: South America. It's in a place where no one's really
- 19:52Speaker 3: going to go. That's the first thing. Secondly, it's been
- 19:56Speaker 3: postponed and pushed back and pushed back and a lot
- 19:59Speaker 3: of mystery around it. People stop caring. I hate to
- 20:04Speaker 3: say it, but the general public is going to move on.
- 20:08Speaker 2: With things.
- 20:09Speaker 3: If you don't keep the updates, right, they're just going
- 20:12Speaker 3: to move on. And there's nothing, I can't fault them
- 20:15Speaker 3: for that. I can't like, that's how it goes. Like
- 20:18Speaker 3: eventually people move on with things and that's just how
- 20:22Speaker 3: it is.
- 20:24Speaker 4: Well, and we've said before a million times, you know, uh,
- 20:27Speaker 4: Mexican support, Mexican fighters, you know, everybody in the race
- 20:29Speaker 4: supports their, their fighters of the same race. It's in
- 20:32Speaker 4: that Mexico will come out and me, you know, as
- 20:33Speaker 4: a Canelo fan boy, unapologetic, love the guy. I'll always
- 20:37Speaker 4: show up for his fights. With all of this stuff,
- 20:41Speaker 4: in terms of how much time is waiting, the lack
- 20:43Speaker 4: of opponent, not fighting Benavidez, not rematching Bud, not rematching Bivol,
- 20:47Speaker 4: which is what people would really get excited about. You're
- 20:51Speaker 4: kind of then, you're losing, you're leaving money on the
- 20:55Speaker 4: table by not having in Vegas when a bunch of
- 20:57Speaker 4: Mexicans would have showed up no matter what. Even if
- 21:01Speaker 4: a lot of Canelo's juice is gone. a lot of
- 21:04Speaker 4: Mexicans would definitely still go because of, because of who
- 21:07Speaker 4: he is.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Vegas, LA, Dallas, Houston. Like people would have figured it out.
- 21:14Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 21:15Speaker 3: But to fight over there, fight someone that's not really
- 21:18Speaker 3: a big name either.
- 21:19Speaker 4: Like it's just, it's the worst of all worlds. It's
- 21:23Speaker 4: the worst possible scenario.
- 21:25Speaker 3: There's like a tune up fight for Canelo. We'll see
- 21:28Speaker 3: what ends up happening. And then next year is next year.
- 21:31Speaker 2: But, yeah, it's just.
- 21:33Speaker 3: One of those things where it's just very lackluster. And
- 21:36Speaker 3: you got to believe that the Saudis are losing a
- 21:41Speaker 3: bunch of money on these events. And you got to
- 21:43Speaker 3: think that with everything going on, I don't think they're
- 21:47Speaker 3: getting out of this what they thought they were. And eventually,
- 21:52Speaker 3: we're looking at them pulling the plug sooner.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Than later, right? Because.
- 21:57Speaker 3: They've gotten, what, one mega fight out of all this
- 21:59Speaker 3: since they've gotten involved? One, which was Canelo Crawford, right?
- 22:02Speaker 3: That was a mega, mega fight. Everything else has kind
- 22:05Speaker 3: of been lackluster, even though they put money into stuff.
- 22:08Speaker 3: I remember when Crawford fought in L.A. at the soccer
- 22:10Speaker 3: stadium a couple years ago. That was a big deal,
- 22:13Speaker 3: but that wasn't a profitable event. It just feels like
- 22:16Speaker 3: they're throwing money. I mean, if Conor Benn really made
- 22:19Speaker 3: $ 15 million versus Ryan Garcia, that's a huge issue. With
- 22:23Speaker 3: no disrespect to Conor Benn, he made it. If someone's
- 22:26Speaker 3: going to pay you for that, hey, by all means,
- 22:27Speaker 3: get your bread. But if you really got to pay
- 22:29Speaker 3: $ 15 million, then we are in a really bad spot.
- 22:35Speaker 4: Well, you know, the next quote-unquote mega fight is Fury
- 22:40Speaker 4: versus Anthony Joshua. I've made it very clear. I don't
- 22:42Speaker 4: personally care. That's not a mega fight.
- 22:44Speaker 2: That's not a mega fight anymore.
- 22:46Speaker 4: No, but they're treating it like it's supposed to be.
- 22:48Speaker 4: They're saying, oh, biggest fight in British boxing all these years.
- 22:51Speaker 3: So that's over there. We don't care about that. That's
- 22:54Speaker 3: over there. And they're not in their prime. So over there,
- 22:57Speaker 3: boxing is different. They live, die, and sweat boxing and soccer.
- 23:02Speaker 3: So that's cool for over there. But no one's stopping
- 23:06Speaker 3: their routine on Saturday to watch them fight here. Whatever
- 23:10Speaker 3: I have going on on Saturday or whenever it comes on,
- 23:13Speaker 3: the plan still goes on.
- 23:15Speaker 4: Nobody's breaking plans for future Joshua.
- 23:17Speaker 2: No, not in 2026. Sure.
- 23:21Speaker 4: And I think that's part of the mistake here is
- 23:25Speaker 4: that they're thinking that this is more of a big
- 23:27Speaker 4: deal than it really is. And I don't know. I mean, sure,
- 23:32Speaker 4: like I said, I'm sure there's tons of people out
- 23:34Speaker 4: in the UK and in Europe who are losing their
- 23:37Speaker 4: minds waiting for this and saying, finally, blah, blah, blah.
- 23:40Speaker 2: But I don't know.
- 23:42Speaker 4: But also, I really wonder how much juice a lot
- 23:45Speaker 4: of these things have because there's people, you know, we
- 23:48Speaker 4: were talking, There are stories about Ryan Garcia fighting Floyd Mayweather,
- 23:51Speaker 4: which is stupid in and of itself. But would people
- 23:54Speaker 4: show up for that? I feel like they would just
- 23:56Speaker 4: because of nostalgia's sake. Oh, no.
- 23:59Speaker 3: So the reason why you keep on hearing Pacquiao and
- 24:01Speaker 3: Floyd's name being brought up is because people are going
- 24:04Speaker 3: to be interested. People will show up. Their names, they
- 24:07Speaker 3: get floated for a reason. Whether it's right or wrong
- 24:09Speaker 3: or whether we love it or not, it is what
- 24:11Speaker 3: it is. But we're going to hear those names to
- 24:13Speaker 3: the end of time until they– either can't box no
- 24:16Speaker 3: more or won't box no more, we're going to hear
- 24:18Speaker 3: their names forever. That's just how that goes. Especially if
- 24:20Speaker 3: they both have financial issues, allegedly. Yeah, we're always going
- 24:25Speaker 3: to hear those names. That's not stopping anything.
- 24:28Speaker 4: That's fair. It's just such a weird time for boxing.
- 24:30Speaker 4: It's like things are going really well this year, but
- 24:34Speaker 4: you just can't have nice things for too, too long
- 24:36Speaker 4: until the bullshit starts creeping back up.
- 24:38Speaker 2: There's like five fights that should have been made this
- 24:40Speaker 2: year that weren't.
- 24:41Speaker 3: I've never seen guys in their prime in their mid
- 24:46Speaker 3: to late 20s just not fight. I've never seen. I've
- 24:49Speaker 3: seen guys not fight certain guys but still fight.
- 24:52Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 24:52Speaker 3: Hey, this agreement didn't work out. I'm going to fight
- 24:55Speaker 3: this guy now. I've seen that happen. I've never seen
- 24:57Speaker 3: this many people just duck a fight, just not fight.
- 25:01Speaker 3: Just be like, you know what?
- 25:02Speaker 2: This didn't work out.
- 25:02Speaker 3: I'm going to fight someone else real quick and then
- 25:04Speaker 3: come back. No, I'm just not going to fight until
- 25:06Speaker 3: I get my way. And Keyshawn Davis, man, I don't
- 25:12Speaker 3: know what's next from here.
- 25:14Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 25:16Speaker 3: There's only so many times that you can say no
- 25:19Speaker 3: to the most money you ever made before people just
- 25:22Speaker 3: stop fucking with you.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Agreed.
- 25:25Speaker 4: Yeah, and the term tomato can was thrown around. I
- 25:29Speaker 4: haven't heard that in a while, but it's just like
- 25:30Speaker 4: tuna fight somebody that's not really a big challenge. But honestly,
- 25:34Speaker 4: I'd rather see these names fight a damn tomato can
- 25:36Speaker 4: than not fight at all.
- 25:37Speaker 3: Man, part of boxing is staying active and also giving
- 25:40Speaker 3: your fans something to see. But also, you can't keep
- 25:43Speaker 3: passing up record paydays because someone else got paid a
- 25:45Speaker 3: certain amount.
- 25:46Speaker 2: You just can't do it.
- 25:48Speaker 4: Right, exactly. So, yeah, no, that's a really good point
- 25:51Speaker 4: that actually it didn't click that they're– back in the days,
- 25:55Speaker 4: if a contract falls through, well, you pick another fight.
- 25:57Speaker 4: Maybe it's not the biggest name in the world. Maybe
- 25:59Speaker 4: it's not a mega fight, et cetera. But you get
- 26:01Speaker 4: in the ring and you stay warm. You don't cool off.
- 26:05Speaker 4: That's like with anything. And as an athlete, you got
- 26:09Speaker 4: to stay warm. That's like we'll never watch. So it's, yeah, it's, it's,
- 26:13Speaker 4: it's just wild. And it's just like, it feels so scattershot,
- 26:16Speaker 4: you know, the, the end of the year just feels like, Oh,
- 26:19Speaker 4: maybe a story is going to happen or maybe a
- 26:20Speaker 4: fight's going to happen. And then all of a sudden not,
- 26:22Speaker 4: and people speculate about this and we're just kind of
- 26:25Speaker 4: stuck here trying to like, just, just grabbing, trying to
- 26:27Speaker 4: grab balls out of the air. Like we're, you know, scrambling. So, um,
- 26:32Speaker 4: but yeah, but anyway, sorry, uh, not to, to make
- 26:34Speaker 4: this too, too long. Um, yes, I, I will be
- 26:36Speaker 4: watching the Canelo fight this Saturday. Uh, it's 31st Halloween. So,
- 26:40Speaker 4: And actually, you know what? I had mentioned before that
- 26:43Speaker 4: I was kind of hoping that it did get postponed
- 26:45Speaker 4: because I wanted to go out on Halloween night or
- 26:48Speaker 4: on a Saturday and have a good time and didn't
- 26:50Speaker 4: want to be out, didn't want the fight to go
- 26:52Speaker 4: too late. But this is actually kind of better because
- 26:55Speaker 4: I'll be day drinking and then all evening I'll be
- 26:57Speaker 4: free to go out on Halloween night. But that is
- 27:01Speaker 4: also kind of like, it just kind of makes that
- 27:04Speaker 4: fight seem like more of a bummer. Yeah. We'll be watching.
- 27:08Speaker 4: We'll discuss the results. And, you know, hopefully, you know,
- 27:11Speaker 4: knock on wood, everybody there is safe, comes back home
- 27:13Speaker 4: in one piece, you know, and comes home to their families.
- 27:16Speaker 4: We can't stress that enough. So, yeah, Jameson, where can
- 27:20Speaker 4: people find you on social media?
