- 1:11This one is the called the Lansing Froud Matter from Hollywood. It's time now.
- 1:18Poor Johnny Doller, alright, cotter at Universal Adjustments. Jim, how
- 1:25are you in a rush? I have to catch a playing in Tucson,
- 1:27Arizona. Lucky you nice there this time he listen. One of our brokers
- 1:32out there rode a fifty thousand straight life policy and a man named James Lansing.
- 1:36Lansing dropped dead two days ago, and you'll never guess why. I'll
- 1:40bite why mister Lansing starved at death one with a fifty five He died of
- 1:46malatrition. Got the carner's report from Tucson right in my hand. Well,
- 1:49if a man could buy a fifty thousand dollars policy, you ought to be
- 1:52able to buy himself a square meal. Yeah, Johnny, Flight two or
- 1:56three leaves at ten forty five? Are you interested at the airport? Jim?
- 2:07Tonight and every weekday night, Bob Bailey in the transcribed Adventures of the
- 2:12Man with the Action Packed Expense Account, America's fabulous freelance insurance Investigator, Yours
- 2:16truly, Johnny Dollar. Expense account submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar at the
- 2:31Universal Adjustment Bureau Home Office, Hartford, Connecticut. The following is an accounting
- 2:37of expenditures during my investigation of the Lansing fraud. Expense account. Item one
- 2:44one hundred seventy eight dollars and thirteen cents caused a plane ticket Hartford the Tucson.
- 2:50I shave, showered, packed, and got out to the airport in
- 2:52time to have breakfast there. Jim Carter found me at the cashier's cage.
- 2:57Hey, kiddo, you won't need a coat out there in As usual,
- 3:00Jim Crater was bigger than I thought. A man who stands six foot five
- 3:05always is a little ruddier, a little more blustery, but as efficient as
- 3:08ever. I wrote a special delivery airmail to the Insurance Commission in Arizona this
- 3:14morning and explain it worldwide. They wrote the policy, we're holding up payment
- 3:17pending investigation. Are you going to tell them that in person? We'll be
- 3:21out there as soon as the letter. Well, I like to be formal
- 3:23on these things, especially with a state commission size. I just as soon
- 3:28let them think. We'll get around to a routine investigation later in a week
- 3:31or two. In other words, you didn't tell anybody we're coming, No,
- 3:35I didn't. Maybe we can work at better this way. The faster
- 3:38we move in and find out what's what and aren't bothered by anybody, the
- 3:40better off we'll be. They give me a ticket lead June. Yeah,
- 3:45sure, hey RL, thank you sir, Yeah, Johnnyette. Commission is
- 3:49going to get formal sooner or later and ask a lot of questions, mainly
- 3:53why doesn't worldwide honor to claim and pay off the beneficiary? So we'll have
- 3:57to askt that on and get ourselves some good answers. Okay, yeah,
- 4:01thanks pow. Has anybody asked that question here? The beneficiary sure, James
- 4:06lancing sister named Arlene Kennedy. She called the broker and he referred her to
- 4:12claims the vision at Worldwide and she called them a long distance and then they
- 4:15called me. I told her, put her off for a while, telling
- 4:18her it was just routine. Let's see, she's gonna be tough man.
- 4:21She could be Johnny. I understand she has money of her own, and
- 4:26she has some influence in and around Tucson, a lot of money. Yeah,
- 4:30and trust she's very comfortably fixed. It'll watch yourself, get up.
- 4:35It's missus. Kennedy's pretty upset by the whole business. Can't blame it for
- 4:40that. James Lancing died on the street with no identification on him. By
- 4:45the time police found out who he was, a routine PM who had already
- 4:48been performed to determine cause you know, the county was going to bury this
- 4:53guy with fifteen thousand dollars worth of insurance. Yeah, imagine that. Oh
- 4:58excuse me, lady. The post mortem never happened unless Lancing dropped dead on
- 5:02a public street. Yeah, I see what you mean. I requested the
- 5:06coroner's office and two sons ahold of body until it will get something done for
- 5:11a picture seatbelts. Oh yeah, yeah. The first thing that occurred to
- 5:16me when I saw the pm plinning was that it might not beat James Lancing
- 5:19at all. Chronic heart conditions, long history, the ability. Doesn't sound
- 5:25like anybody worldwide would ensure Lancing took a physical before the policy was issued.
- 5:30And of course he did. See if you got any material on his insurance
- 5:33examination? Sure right here. Standard for James Lancing was one okay when the
- 5:41policy was issued a couple of years ago. Malnutrition, long history, chronic
- 5:47heart. How could he get in that bad shape in two years? That's
- 5:54a pretty good question, Johnny, that the answer is going to be great.
- 5:57Yeah, what's the exam? Have any physicians name? I see here
- 6:05a doctor Carl Maylood Sweet nine thirty two, Valley National Building, Tucson.
- 6:11He's our first job, Johnny, hey cut stewardess. Yeah, Well,
- 6:20back to business, kiddo. It was a long trip and I spent most
- 6:27of it going over the material and Jim Carter's briefcase by the time we circled
- 6:30Tucson Airport at four forty five in the afternoon, I had the facts pretty
- 6:34well in mind. Expense account item two three fifty camp fair at Tucson Airport
- 6:46to the Pioneer Hotel. Jim Carter and I took a joining role. I
- 6:49unpacked my clothes and got on the phone. A sergeant Younger at Tucson Police
- 6:54had made the DA report on James Lansing. Yes he was in. Yes,
- 6:58he'd be glad to talk to me. Jim Carter contacting the statematical morning,
- 7:04let meet mister Doller. How he liked to cent. Well, I've
- 7:08been here two hours, sergeant. Why, they're certainly nice, but like
- 7:11this all through the winter months. It's a little warm in the summer though,
- 7:16this Lansing manner. Yeah, it isn't really much to tell you,
- 7:20mister dollar. One of the cards answered. The car man was found dead
- 7:24in the doorway of a jewelry store about four blocks down the street. This
- 7:29was a day before yesterday's sergeant. Yeah, I went down to the scene
- 7:32and called the corner's office. No identification on him, so always started to
- 7:35check him out. Took a little while. The time we got to make
- 7:39on the corner had already performed an autopsy. Yeah, I understood that was
- 7:43about the way it was. So tell me, how did you identify him
- 7:46as Lancing? One of his prints matched up on our cards here. Lancing
- 7:50was booked on a traffic beef year ago. Otherwise would still be trying to
- 7:54make you're sure it's Lansing over in the morning. I wish sure his sister
- 7:59came down identify him? Name m Kennedy. Yes, what did missus Kennedy
- 8:03have to say about the cause of death? Nothing? That malnutrition bit didn't
- 8:07do a thing for her. We all thought Lancing some sort of a transition,
- 8:13you know, just some old bum until we identified him. Any witnesses
- 8:16see him die? I haven't found any. According to the corner, he
- 8:20had been dead an hours so before anybody noticed him at all. Happened early
- 8:24in the morning, I see, say, did Lancing have any other business
- 8:28down here other than that traffic violation? Nope? All right, who'd I
- 8:35have to see to get into the mark off on the corner for you won't
- 8:37be any trouble there. You want to go over now? No? Later
- 8:39on? Maybe? Uh dollar? Yeah, death was from natural causes.
- 8:46There's no doubt about that. Yeah, no matter how much you investigate,
- 8:50you people are gonna have to pay off. Well, aren't you. Maybe
- 8:56we just have to be sure one thing. What's that that we ensured the
- 9:01right man. By the time I finished was Sergeant Younger. It was six
- 9:09o'clock. I found a hotel and Jim Carter, busy in the fishing,
- 9:11has always had already gotten the vital statistics on doctor Carl Mayhood Northwestern University Medical
- 9:18School in nineteen forty, Army Medical Corps in nineteen forty one to forty five.
- 9:22Doctor Mayhood's license to practice medicine and Arizona was issued in June of nineteen
- 9:26forty six, married two children. Income and practice, according to Carter,
- 9:30was average in person. Doctor Mayhood was a tall, blonde man in his
- 9:35late thirties. He looked like he needed a week's rest and a few light
- 9:37and you have an alarm clock around the house. Was a Garland man.
- 9:43He was that. Yes, good bye, Yes, doctor Mayhood. My
- 9:48name is Johnny Dollar. I'm from Hartford. I represent the Adjustment Bureau of
- 9:52Handling Acclaim for Worldwide Insurance. Well what does that mean? I'm an investigator.
- 9:58So my fourteenth, nineteen fifty three, you examine a man I'd like
- 10:01to get some information about. I hope this won't take too long. Was
- 10:07it an insurance examination? Yeah? The man's name was James Lansing. Do
- 10:11you happen to remember James Lansing? No, I can't say that. I
- 10:16do remember him, mister Dollar? What about it? Would I like to
- 10:20show you the standard examination form? First? Is this your signature? Is
- 10:28that your signature? Doctor? I suppose so? Yes, I don't know.
- 10:35Aren't you sure? Well? How many people are certain of their signatures?
- 10:37It looks like my signature, mister Dollar. I can't say for sure,
- 10:41for it is a risin all right? What about these? Are these
- 10:45notations on the form and your handwriting? I would think so, I don't
- 10:50know. It looks like my handwriting. I can't say. According to this
- 10:56form, you gave mister Lansing a complete physical and pronounced him sound. That's
- 11:01my job as a doctor on these insurance examinations. Anything unusual about that?
- 11:05As the Lancing died two days ago, doctor, there's nothing unusual about that
- 11:09either. Did they send you all away from Hertford so I could tendue to
- 11:13go back there and buy a book on heart disease. You can get them
- 11:16anywhere in the country, the simplest kind, not even a doctor's book.
- 11:20Read it, know it, and don't take up my valuable time. I'm
- 11:26sure his patient, Lancing was forty one years old if he had no heart
- 11:33condition when I examined him two years ago, and obviously he didn't according to
- 11:37my findings, it's entirely reasonable to assume that he could have developed heart trouble
- 11:41in a very short while, even the day after I examine him. You
- 11:46people gauge those things in your premiums. Why do you bother me? Are
- 11:48you finished? I take it you've had yourself a tough day, doctor,
- 11:52and you don't want to be bothered with anybody. Look, I'm not here
- 11:54to bother you. That's from what's on this sheet and what's happened. You're
- 11:58on enough trouble to get yourself involved in a police investigation. I'm here to
- 12:01try to avoid all that for you as well as me, and please don't
- 12:05lecture me on heart trouble. Incidentally, we know the statistics by age,
- 12:09race, color, climate, state, religion, occupation, geographical area,
- 12:13and sex. It so happens we don't have to go into that. Doctor,
- 12:16James Lansing died of malnutrition. I said, Lansing died of malnutrition.
- 12:24I'll be coronist report. Look at yourself. Well you should know now,
- 12:33was it possible for you to overlook that condition at the time you'll examine Lansing?
- 12:37If he'd been suffering from malnutrition in any degree, I would have discovered
- 12:41it and noted it. According to the coronist findings, James Lansing had been
- 12:46ill several years. The lung and heart condition existed at least ten years.
- 12:52Can you explain how you were able to pronounce some physically fit doctor? Nope?
- 12:58How about this the angina condition? I could have missed that, but
- 13:01it's unlikely with a degree of aggravation noted here on the corner's report. Have
- 13:05you had much experience reading chest x rays? Doctor? Of course, alesions
- 13:11reported by the KI. If there's been any lesions on Lancing's chest, I
- 13:13would have reported them. I can't explain that either. Well, now you
- 13:16understand why I'm here. Certainly I wish I could help it. You can
- 13:22just let me see your file copy of the examination and the X ray you
- 13:26took at that time. I'll have my nurse looked them up. I don't
- 13:28keep files over a year old up here. We have a placed on them
- 13:31the basement. Okay, I'll have them for you tomorrow. What time tomorrow,
- 13:37as soon as possible, like to have them first thing. Doctor.
- 13:41You're kind of on the aren't you. That's right, doctor, I'm kind
- 13:46of on you, Johnny Dollar, Doctor Maho, I sent you a copy
- 14:07of Lansing and Joints examination this morning. Did you get it all right?
- 14:09Yes? I did, doctor, Thank you very much. Just looked it
- 14:11over and I take everything's all right. It's an exact duplicate of the one
- 14:15cent of the insurance company, and that part's okay, but it doesn't straighten
- 14:18out matters on this case. I am not concerned with your case particularly.
- 14:22I just hope you're through bothering me, mister Dollar. Not quite. What
- 14:24does that mean? I want another hour of your time, doctor. I
- 14:28want you to go over to the car in his office with me and look
- 14:30at mister Lansing's body to identify it. I've got to know if he's the
- 14:33man you examine or not. About an hour, doctor, I can get
- 14:39an injunction, all right. Expense account submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar,
- 14:52location Tucson, Arizona at the Universal Adjustment Bureau Home Office, Hartford, Connecticut.
- 14:58The following is a further accounting of expended jurors during my investigation of the
- 15:01Lansing fraud or was it a fraud? Expense account IDEM three ten dollars loan
- 15:09the Jim Carter, who was working with me on the case. Thanks buddy,
- 15:13I pay it back as soon as I can cash check. Been so
- 15:16busy I having that time. How's your doctor friend? I'm going to pick
- 15:20him up pretty soon and go over to the Carner's office. I want him
- 15:22to look at James Lansing and see if he's the same man he passed on
- 15:24the insurance examination two years ago. Either we insured the wrong man or doctor
- 15:30Mayhood examined the wrong man. I don't know which. How have you done
- 15:33so far besides what I told you yesterday about doctor Mayhood? Yeah, well
- 15:37he's in healthy financial shape, not bad, but you know, healthy.
- 15:43His house halfway paid for, he owns one car upright, man has eight
- 15:46months to go on another one, all of which doesn't mean anything. If
- 15:48he phonied up an insurance examination. Rue you know, I've been thinking this
- 15:52would have worked. But James Lansing died on the street in the city,
- 15:56performed an autopsy deaf malnutrition for a private position. Without an autopsy hanging over
- 16:02him. It could have been heart failure or most anything. Jim, I
- 16:06think we can do whatever we want around here, step on anybody's toes,
- 16:08make any kind of noise we like with this kind of situation to investigate.
- 16:12We don't have to be careful. Lansing's bodies in the Morgue. There's no
- 16:17doubt that it's him Exhibit A, but we aren't sure that his fifty thousand
- 16:19dollars policy was issued legitimately. What are you getting to call the State Insurance
- 16:23Commission, Jim. Let them know we think this is a bad one from
- 16:26top to bottom. Let them know that so that when the beneficiary starts to
- 16:30complain, they can tell her it might scare her and whoever helped her end
- 16:33up being more ridiculous than they've been already. I'm gonna hold off, Johnny,
- 16:40why till I see how you and doctor Mayhoold make out at the Morgue
- 16:45expense account item for two dollars cab faired from my hotel to the Valley National
- 16:51Building. I pick up a scowling doctor Mayhood, and then we drove over
- 16:53to the carna's office. Mister Dollar, is a waste of your time online.
- 17:00Sorry to inconvenience your doctor, but it's necessary. I suppose so,
- 17:03and I suppose you have a job to do. But I have a job
- 17:07too. Mister Franks, the insurance broker telephones me and says he's sending over
- 17:11a man for a physical. I do the physical. It's immaterial to me
- 17:14whether the man I examine is qualified for insurance or not. My job is
- 17:18to examine him. It's up to the insurance company to determine it. Johnny
- 17:22Dollar, this is doctor Mayhood. I believe sergeon's younger phone. Yeah.
- 17:27Dollar, It's up to the insurance company to do what they want about the
- 17:32examining. I understand all that fact. Then don't ignore it with your high
- 17:34pressure tactics, because examination is the only part I have to do with his
- 17:38business. I examine the man named James Lansing two years ago. You have
- 17:42a copy of my findings on that examination. I stand on him and don't
- 17:47forget it. I don't forget for one minute, nor do I forget that
- 17:51what you've found and what an autopsy surgeon found there are completely different opinions on
- 17:55Lansing's physical condition. Here we go, boys, there's the body polish effect.
- 18:03Please, yeah, I'll doctor. I called my lawyer after you called
- 18:11me today. I won't be intimidated, mister d You aren't being intimidated doctor.
- 18:15You're being asked to cooperate. Then maybe I don't like the way you
- 18:18west for cooperation. My attorney, you will be in my office to represent
- 18:21me if you bother me any more about this look at this body. Your
- 18:23attorney can't refute what's already an established doctor. You pronounced James Lansing in good
- 18:29physical condition two years ago, and on tops of reports shows that when he
- 18:33died two days ago he was in very bad physical condition, so bad that
- 18:37two years ago he couldn't possibly have gone through a careful examination in your office
- 18:40without some of the symptoms being detected by you. Where is your medical degree
- 18:44and what response? Why don't you shut up and take a look and tell
- 18:47me if you've ever seen this man before. I won't be spoken to it
- 18:48that way. Just a minute, I'll get an injunction and I'll charge malpractice
- 18:53and negligence if I have to. Oh on what round? You're being stupid?
- 18:59Doctor. All you have to do is look at that corpse and tell
- 19:02me if he's the man you examined in your office two years ago. Well,
- 19:08I don't know whether I've seen this man before or not, or does
- 19:11he look familiar in any way. I can't say I might have examined this
- 19:15man. I don't know. This is James Lansing, doctor, the name
- 19:18you filled in on your physical examination for the insurance I know that. Is
- 19:22this the man you examine? I don't know. I honestly don't know.
- 19:26It was two years ago. If I see a man for three hours in
- 19:30the course of a physical examination, am I expected to remember his face or
- 19:33any details about him two years later? Is there any way you can determine
- 19:37whether or not this is the man you examine in your office? No,
- 19:41not that I know. Is there any way you can determine it? Believe
- 19:47me, doctor, I can try, and I did try that afternoon,
- 19:56over the protests of doctor Mayhood. I took all of the personnel can I
- 20:00with his office down to the moor a nurse, the receptionist, the x
- 20:03ray technician and the laboratory worker. None of them recognize the body of James
- 20:07Lansing. Expense a count Adam five ten cents. One phone call the Jim
- 20:14Carter, who'd spent the day preparing the necessary forms for the insurance Commission and
- 20:18gathering data on Lansing's beneficiary. You think doctor Mayhood was in on it.
- 20:22He's too mad, too belligerent, Jim, You don't sound too sure,
- 20:26male. And maybe he just strikes me as an an abductor. And let's
- 20:30say Mayhood's way down to my list. He examined a man who said he
- 20:33was James Lansing. It could have been anybody. All right, we'll want
- 20:37to go that way for a while, any ideas I'm on my way out
- 20:41to Lansing's old address. He had an apartment on the other side of town.
- 20:44I want to see how he's lived out there. Still want me to
- 20:47go ahead? The insurance Commission, Yeah, go ahead. The manager at
- 20:56James Lansing's apartment house happened to be a woman, and I need a Reagan.
- 21:00She also happened to be willing to go back down to the coroner's office
- 21:03with me and view of the mortal remain there you are. Oh have you
- 21:18ever seen this man before, missus Reagan? Yes, yes, Or that's
- 21:21that's mister Lansing, Apartment thirty four. You're positive. Oh yes, I've
- 21:25seen him every day for almost two years. Okay, I want to smoke.
- 21:30I want to get out of here. I don't know why I'm acting
- 21:34this way. He doesn't look any different now than he's looked before. I've
- 21:37seen him stretched out like that one hundred times, I mean almost like that.
- 21:41Oh s don't me. I mean, I guess it's because I knew
- 21:45he was just drunk then, not dead. He was crazy, carrying on
- 21:48the way he did. It feels good to be out in the sunlight again.
- 21:56I'll take that smoke now, let's tell it. Oh, thank you.
- 22:07Oh. Mister Lansing used to get up around ten every morning. He'd
- 22:11look awful, but he was always kind of nice, polite, you know,
- 22:14he'd be regular as clockwork. He'd walk past my door and dip his
- 22:17hat and go right down to the store and come back a little while with
- 22:19a sack of groceries, a bottle of milk for his cat, and some
- 22:22doughnuts for himself, and some booze. Huh. And then he'd just locked
- 22:26himself up in his apartment and stay there all day, drinking real alcoholic.
- 22:30Well, I'd say so. At least I wasn't surprised he starved to death.
- 22:34He can't live on whiskey. He was pride to the ears by noon
- 22:37every day as long as I knew him. Mister Lansing didn't work then,
- 22:41well, I think he tried to sell real estate once a long time ago.
- 22:44Oh but how could he? I understand he was a retired engineer or
- 22:48something like that. He pays rent. Oh, yes, I always seemed
- 22:52to have enough money to get along. Did he have any family, missus
- 22:56Reagan? Well, I know he's got a sister living in town somewhere.
- 22:59What about his friend? They seem to do all his drinking alone. Say
- 23:03you're from the insurance company, you should know about his family. Apparently there
- 23:07are a lot of things we don't know. A man named James Lansing moved
- 23:11into your apartment house two years ago. He didn't work, but he had
- 23:15enough money for his rent and his liquor. He also had enough money to
- 23:18buy some expensive insurance, very expensive. Somehow he passed an insurance examination,
- 23:23and then he suddenly died. No one, nothing, just one beneficiary.
- 23:27It's dallar. You don't suppose somebody just gave him enough money to get along
- 23:33so he'd drink himself to death, do you that's one way of looking at
- 23:37hi, Missus Reagan. Oh, my poor man, My poor poor man.
- 23:48I spent another hour with Missus Reagan gathering as much background as they could
- 23:52about the last two years of James Lansing's life. I also spoke to the
- 23:56janitor of the building and two of the tenants. They all verified the that
- 24:00Lansing had been drinking heavily for better than eighteen months prior to his death.
- 24:03No one seemed to know why Jim Carter had a nancing. I talked to
- 24:07our man in La Johnny Lancing lived there before he came at two cents.
- 24:11He had several arrests for drunken us, never married one time. He made
- 24:15his living as an engineer, finally got fired for drinking on the job.
- 24:19It's just one of those chronic cases. First arrest was back in nineteen thirty
- 24:23nine. How's the beneficiary holding on, sister? Yeah, well, missus
- 24:29Kennedy was pretty upset when the Insurance Commission, not a fighter. We were
- 24:32in town making an investigation and Dignan put out things like that. She I
- 24:36don't know how long it it take. This all comes second hand from the
- 24:40insurance Commission. Johnny a broken a. Hillary Franks sold the policy. What
- 24:47have you got on him? Hillary Franks has represented Worldwide Insurance in this area
- 24:51for seventeen years. You're stolen, kid. I'm sure I'm stalling, Jim,
- 25:00because we're right down to the meat of it now, and it makes
- 25:00me sick. There's only one person who stood to benefit by having James Lansing
- 25:06insured. That's the beneficiary, his sister, Arlene Kennedy. So, Jim,
- 25:11you know as well as I do. Somebody else had to take the
- 25:12physical examination on doctor Mayhood's office. Someone had to help her arrange that,
- 25:18Someone had to help her get Lansing signature on the policies. She couldn't have
- 25:22pulled it off by herself without gumming it up. She had to have expert
- 25:25help. Hillary Franks. Yeah, Hillary Franks, seventeen years broker Worldwide insurance
- 25:32company. Okay, the salesman's the first one to come up a suspicion in
- 25:34a case like this outside of the beneficiary. So let's get on with all
- 25:37right, Jim One thing, but Hillary Franks knows we'll be looking at him,
- 25:42and he knows he's under suspicion. That worry a little bit. After
- 25:47seventeen years in the business. He should also know where we're going to be
- 25:49before we get there. If he did something, he's Dumber's trying to work
- 25:52a fifty thousand dollars fraud on his own insurance company. He might do something
- 25:56even dumber. If so, what's the thirty h m. Yeah. From
- 26:03now on, Johnny, you better carry this. There will be another intriguing
- 26:22episode of the Lansing Fraud tomorrow. Tomorrow, Well tomorrow, there's a bit
- 26:26of excitement when a pair of thieves started falling out. Matter of fact,
- 26:32a lot of excitement. Join us, won't you? Yours truly? Johnny

- 27:07episode of Yours Truly Johnny Doller. Roy Rowan speaking welcome back. Handing over
- 28:15a thirty eight. That's a pretty dramatic way to bring a serial to an
- 28:19end or to a cliffhanger, and we will find out more of what's so
- 28:30of what will happen. This one feels a little bit like it's moving kind
- 28:33of slow, so it sounds like part three. We're gonna see the pace
- 28:38pick up all right. Well, Listener comments and feedback. Michael, who
- 28:44sent in the donation, I said, Adam, just wanted to tell you
