Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: Hello, friends from across the nation and around the world.
- 0:07Speaker 1: I'm Martin, and you are listening to Dad's bedtime Stories. Tonight,
- 0:13Speaker 1: as promised, we're headed back into the quantum computer universe
- 0:18Speaker 1: because I had a great suggestion from Josie from Bracebridge
- 0:23Speaker 1: to do an episode where you go to different parts
- 0:26Speaker 1: of the Earth and clean up trash and save wildlife
- 0:29Speaker 1: and that sort of thing. I'd been meaning to go
- 0:32Speaker 1: back to the quantum universe for a while and I
- 0:34Speaker 1: thought this was the perfect excuse to do that. If
- 0:38Speaker 1: you have an idea for the quantum universe or any
- 0:41Speaker 1: other universe, you can leave it for me on speak Pipe.
- 0:46Speaker 1: I think there were a couple way back in the past,
- 0:49Speaker 1: and I'll go back and try to find them for
- 0:50Speaker 1: the quantum universe. But if you want to do another
- 0:52Speaker 1: one just to remind me, that would be great. Before
- 0:56Speaker 1: we get started, I just want to give a big
- 0:59Speaker 1: shout out to some of my newest Patreon sponsors. First up,
- 1:04Speaker 1: thank you too, Calder, Hayes, Hattie and Mark for sponsoring
- 1:09Speaker 1: the sponsoring the podcast on Patreon.
- 1:12Speaker 2: I really really appreciate it.
- 1:14Speaker 1: And last thank you to Brandon, Melissa, Josie and Charlie
- 1:21Speaker 1: from Bracebridge for their Patreon sponsorship as well. Apparently they
- 1:27Speaker 1: started listening for the first time with my hydro one
- 1:30Speaker 1: episode when I was caught in the middle of an
- 1:32Speaker 1: ice storm about a year ago now, and funny enough,
- 1:37Speaker 1: not the first.
- 1:38Speaker 2: People who told me that was the episode that led
- 1:40Speaker 2: them to the podcast, so who knew.
- 1:44Speaker 1: If you'll like the podcast, don't forget to rate it
- 1:46Speaker 1: and review it wherever you're listening, consider joining Patreon if
- 1:50Speaker 1: parents think that's a good idea, or you can even
- 1:53Speaker 1: check out some of my books that are available online.
- 1:57Speaker 1: I actually went back due to some views and stuff
- 2:00Speaker 1: like that, and fixed up some of the older books.
- 2:03Speaker 1: So Cards of Power has just been updated the first
- 2:06Speaker 1: volume of it, just as a different format. There's no
- 2:09Speaker 1: need to buy it again or anything like that if
- 2:11Speaker 1: you already have it, but if you're buying it new,
- 2:14Speaker 1: I've just kind of spread things out a little bit.
- 2:16Speaker 1: I made it a little bit longer, with bigger words
- 2:20Speaker 1: and that sort of thing, something I'd always wanted to do,
- 2:23Speaker 1: and fix a couple little mistakes I found when I
- 2:25Speaker 1: was reading it for my other podcast, and I also
- 2:28Speaker 1: changed one of the pictures in the coloring book because
- 2:32Speaker 1: I saw another review that pointed out something strange in
- 2:34Speaker 1: one of those pictures. Not a huge deal, but I
- 2:36Speaker 1: did replace it. Anyways, you can check all of those
- 2:40Speaker 1: out on Amazon. The link should be in the description.
- 2:43Speaker 1: And now it's that time again. Time to get as
- 2:48Speaker 1: comfy as you can in that bed. Close your eyes
- 2:52Speaker 1: and imagine yourself doing what the kid in the story does.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Imagine yourself waking up in your very own bed. Before
- 3:04Speaker 1: you can even sit up properly, you hear Quantum's voice
- 3:08Speaker 1: speak from your wrist. Good morning, he says, cheerfully, I
- 3:15Speaker 1: have a surprise for you. You blink and lift your arm.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Quantum's tiny, smiling face is glowing on the screen of
- 3:25Speaker 1: your watch. A surprise, you ask, Yes, please look beside
- 3:32Speaker 1: your bed on the nightstand. You should find a button.
- 3:37Speaker 1: You look beside your bed, and sure enough, there is
- 3:41Speaker 1: a night stand there, even if there wasn't before, and
- 3:46Speaker 1: even stranger. Sitting on top of that night's stand is
- 3:50Speaker 1: a little red button. Oh what does it do? You ask?
- 3:56Speaker 1: I believe, Quantum says. The best way to answer that
- 4:01Speaker 1: question is to press it. You hesitate for a second, because, well,
- 4:08Speaker 1: you're not really sure about pressing this big red button.
- 4:11Speaker 1: On your night stand. But eventually you decide to go
- 4:15Speaker 1: for it. You press down on the thing, and for
- 4:19Speaker 1: a moment nothing happens, and then your bed begins to move. Oh,
- 4:27Speaker 1: you jump off the bed as the entire thing slowly
- 4:31Speaker 1: slide sideways across the floor with a smooth, mechanical hum,
- 4:37Speaker 1: revealing a large square of metal, a hatch of some kind. Quantum,
- 4:46Speaker 1: you built something under my room. I built something under
- 4:51Speaker 1: your room, under much of the house and under a
- 4:55Speaker 1: good portion of the yard. Quantum replies, I was productive
- 5:01Speaker 1: and I had a lot of energy to work with.
- 5:05Speaker 1: You hurry over and kneel beside the hatch. It's made
- 5:09Speaker 1: of dark silver metal with little glowing blue lines around
- 5:13Speaker 1: the edges, and there's a handle in the middle of course,
- 5:17Speaker 1: dry opening it, Quantum suggests you grab the handle and pull.
- 5:23Speaker 1: The hatch lifts up with a hiss, and beneath it.
- 5:28Speaker 1: There's not a ladder or stairs, or you know, some
- 5:32Speaker 1: sort of elevator. Instead, there's a slide. The shiny metal
- 5:38Speaker 1: slide curves steeply down into glowing blue light below. You
- 5:45Speaker 1: built a secret underground base, you say, staring down the slide.
- 5:51Speaker 1: That is correct, And you made the entrance a slide
- 5:58Speaker 1: that is also correct. I have researched children on your
- 6:03Speaker 1: world thoroughly. Slides are extremely popular. You grin huh fair point.
- 6:11Speaker 1: You sit down at the top, grip the sides, and
- 6:15Speaker 1: push off. You shoot downwards, immediately twisting through a polished
- 6:21Speaker 1: tunnel of metal and blue lights. The slide curves left,
- 6:26Speaker 1: then right, then drops more steeply, and your stomach flips
- 6:30Speaker 1: in the best possible way. At the bottom. You burst
- 6:35Speaker 1: out of the tube and slide across a smooth metal
- 6:38Speaker 1: floor before coming to a stop in the middle of
- 6:42Speaker 1: a gigantic underground chamber, one that definitely wasn't there before.
- 6:50Speaker 1: You stand up slowly and your mouth falls open. The
- 6:55Speaker 1: base is enormous. The walls are smooth steel and dark
- 7:01Speaker 1: gray metal, broken up by glowing blue lines that run
- 7:06Speaker 1: along the floor and ceiling like streams of light. Overhead,
- 7:12Speaker 1: huge support beams arch high above you. One side of
- 7:16Speaker 1: the chamber is taken up by an enormous new printer,
- 7:20Speaker 1: far larger than the one in your room upstairs. Thick
- 7:24Speaker 1: energy canisters are plugged into the back of it, though
- 7:28Speaker 1: none of them are glowing anymore, which makes you think
- 7:31Speaker 1: they might be empty. Or close to it. Beside the printer,
- 7:37Speaker 1: mounted against one wall, like the heart of the whole place,
- 7:41Speaker 1: is Quantum's main body, its screen glowing brightly. A group
- 7:47Speaker 1: of helper bods drift quietly through the air.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Nearby.
- 7:52Speaker 1: There are more than before, several of them, all hovering
- 7:57Speaker 1: carrying tools, scanning surfaces and moving the last few panels
- 8:01Speaker 1: of metal into place along the walls. But most of
- 8:05Speaker 1: the base is still empty, just a huge open space.
- 8:12Speaker 1: This is amazing, you say, thank you, Quantum says, there
- 8:18Speaker 1: is still much to do. At present. The base contains
- 8:22Speaker 1: a primary fabrication chamber, energy routing systems, robotic docking stations,
- 8:29Speaker 1: secure storage and launch access. However, many facilities remain unbuilt.
- 8:37Speaker 1: You slowly turn in a circle. You built this whole
- 8:41Speaker 1: place while I was sleeping. Yes, mostly printed it. You
- 8:46Speaker 1: sleep for a long time, which is super helpful. I
- 8:51Speaker 1: can't believe this, Oh you should. It is standing directly
- 8:56Speaker 1: beneath your feet, Quantum replies, I meant it more as
- 9:01Speaker 1: a figure of speech. You walk toward the giant printer,
- 9:05Speaker 1: where one of the helper bots floats past, carrying a
- 9:08Speaker 1: tool nearly as big as itself, sitting beneath it. Is
- 9:13Speaker 1: the folded up submarine in the shape of a backpack.
- 9:18Speaker 1: So what happens next, you ask, do we start building
- 9:22Speaker 1: all the cool stuff now? Yes, Quantum replies, but first
- 9:27Speaker 1: we need more material. And after researching your Earth, I
- 9:34Speaker 1: have found many possible sources. Quantum screen changes and suddenly
- 9:40Speaker 1: a map of Earth appears different places, blink and red.
- 9:46Speaker 1: I've spent the night analyzing publicly available information. There are
- 9:51Speaker 1: many areas on Earth in desperate need of cleanup. According
- 9:56Speaker 1: to the Internet, every year, an estimated nineteen to twenty
- 10:01Speaker 1: three million tons of plastic waste leaks into the aquatic ecosystem, rivers,
- 10:08Speaker 1: lakes and see you stare at the map that much. Yes,
- 10:16Speaker 1: Also in twenty twenty two alone, the world generated and
- 10:20Speaker 1: estimated sixty two billion kilograms of electric waste. That is
- 10:26Speaker 1: sixty two million tons. You look from the map to
- 10:30Speaker 1: quantum screen, so there's basically garbage everywhere. That is a
- 10:37Speaker 1: somewhat simplified summary, Quantum says, but yes, essentially the map
- 10:44Speaker 1: zooms in in an area marked with a glowing symbol.
- 10:48Speaker 1: I would like to start by expanding our aquatic operations,
- 10:53Speaker 1: but first we require more high quality material. Electronic waste
- 10:58Speaker 1: will be especially use It contains metals, circuitry, structural materials,
- 11:05Speaker 1: and many components suitable for advanced fabrication. With such a
- 11:11Speaker 1: large quantity, it will be less necessary to reorganize atoms
- 11:16Speaker 1: themselves into different materials. You nod slowly, all right, so
- 11:23Speaker 1: you want me to go get a bunch of e
- 11:25Speaker 1: waste correct. Also, in order to facilitate this, I have
- 11:30Speaker 1: made substantial upgrades. A deep metallic rumble passes through the base.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Floor.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Panels in the ground slide apart, and from below something
- 11:43Speaker 1: enormous begins to rise. You take a step back as
- 11:47Speaker 1: a machine lifts up through a giant hatch in the
- 11:51Speaker 1: floor and settles into the middle of the launch bay.
- 11:56Speaker 1: It looks kind of like a helicopter, a cargo ship,
- 12:00Speaker 1: and a futuristic drone smashed together. It's large and silver gray,
- 12:07Speaker 1: with a rounded sort of cockpit at the front and
- 12:11Speaker 1: four massive circular devices mounted around it, one on each corner.
- 12:17Speaker 1: They resemble giant propellers from a gigantic drone, except there's
- 12:22Speaker 1: no blades. Instead, each one glows faintly with a sort
- 12:28Speaker 1: of blue white energy. At the bottom is a wide
- 12:33Speaker 1: intake of some kind that looks well, kind of like
- 12:38Speaker 1: a tractor beam if your knowledge of science fiction is right.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Mounted on the rear are several large energy tanks that
- 12:47Speaker 1: look almost identical to the ones from the submarine. What
- 12:54Speaker 1: is that you ask? That? He says is a hover
- 13:01Speaker 1: You walk around it in awe. It's huge. It needed
- 13:07Speaker 1: to be. The plans I have drawn up for the
- 13:10Speaker 1: upgraded submarine and ocean cleaning device are much larger than
- 13:16Speaker 1: a backpack size. Therefore, you will need something larger than
- 13:21Speaker 1: a hover scooter to relocate it. The hover copter contains
- 13:27Speaker 1: its own collector beam, d atomizer, storage tanks, and dual
- 13:32Speaker 1: navigation modes. You made a giant flying garbage vacuum. That
- 13:40Speaker 1: is correct, you grin? I love it. A hatch on
- 13:45Speaker 1: the side folds open, revealing the cockpit. Quantum begins explaining
- 13:51Speaker 1: as you climb inside. It has several flight modes. In
- 13:56Speaker 1: hover mode. The right hand lever controls eltude, lifting it
- 14:01Speaker 1: up and down. The left hand joystick controls forward, backward,
- 14:07Speaker 1: left and right, or by twisting it you can spin
- 14:12Speaker 1: in circles. It is very similar to the controls on
- 14:16Speaker 1: a toy drone. Hover mode is ideal for precision movements
- 14:22Speaker 1: picking things up, dropping things off, or landing. You sit
- 14:27Speaker 1: in the pilot's seat, staring at the controls. As the
- 14:31Speaker 1: side closes up. On the right hand side, you see
- 14:35Speaker 1: two levers. One looks like the height lever the spaceship
- 14:39Speaker 1: is talking about, and the other is marked throttle. There's
- 14:44Speaker 1: a central steering wheel that's sort of folded into the
- 14:48Speaker 1: dash at the moment, and a little lever on the
- 14:52Speaker 1: left hand side. What's the other flight mode? You ask?
- 14:57Speaker 1: In the other flight mode, the reconfigures, the steering wheel
- 15:03Speaker 1: folds out, and the entire thing acts more like a
- 15:07Speaker 1: traditional airplane, only one that will not fall from the
- 15:11Speaker 1: sky if you come to a complete stop. In this mode,
- 15:16Speaker 1: speed is controlled with the throttle on the right hand
- 15:19Speaker 1: side of the steering wheel, and the rest of the
- 15:22Speaker 1: ship is controlled with the wheel itself. Pulling back pulls
- 15:27Speaker 1: the ship upwards, pushing down moves it forwards, and steering
- 15:33Speaker 1: left and right. As you may have guessed, steers it
- 15:37Speaker 1: left or right. I suggest you start with a basic takeoff.
- 15:44Speaker 1: The base starts to rumble again, then sunlight shines in
- 15:50Speaker 1: over top of the hovercraft as a gigantic.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Hatch opens up.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Oh starting hover copped now the hoofer copter hums to life.
- 16:05Speaker 1: All of the little controls on the dashboard laid up
- 16:08Speaker 1: at once and well, it starts to sort of hum.
- 16:15Speaker 1: Now pull up on the right hand lever to move
- 16:19Speaker 1: yourself straight up and out of this place. You do
- 16:24Speaker 1: just that, carefully, pulling up on the control. The hum
- 16:29Speaker 1: grows louder, and the ship starts to move up, higher
- 16:35Speaker 1: and higher and higher. Out of the hatch and above
- 16:40Speaker 1: your home. You look at a little glass panel below you,
- 16:46Speaker 1: one that lets you see what's directly below, which should
- 16:50Speaker 1: be helpful for landing. A huge opening in your lawn
- 16:55Speaker 1: slowly starts to close until it completely disappears, appearing as
- 17:01Speaker 1: if nothing was there in the first place. You practice
- 17:06Speaker 1: hovering around on the little copter, moving left and right
- 17:10Speaker 1: on the joystick. The copter itself moves directly right or
- 17:16Speaker 1: directly left as you push in that direction. If you
- 17:19Speaker 1: push forward, it moves forward, and backward it moves backward.
- 17:26Speaker 1: You try twisting the joystick, and the copter twists with it.
- 17:31Speaker 1: It's actually really easy to fly in this mode, though
- 17:35Speaker 1: not particularly fast. A GPS map appears on the display
- 17:41Speaker 1: in front of you, with a glowing path leading away
- 17:45Speaker 1: this is your destination, a large electronics waste depository. With
- 17:52Speaker 1: this additional energy collected, we should have no problem completing
- 17:56Speaker 1: the submarine upgrades to continue our cleaning of the Pacific
- 18:01Speaker 1: garbage batch. Now, are you ready to switch to flight mode?
- 18:08Speaker 1: I guess so, you say, press the button. A big
- 18:13Speaker 1: blue button lights up that says flight mode, right beside
- 18:18Speaker 1: another button that reads hover mode, which is currently glowing green,
- 18:23Speaker 1: probably to indicate that it's on. You press the flight
- 18:27Speaker 1: mode button, and the ship hums slightly differently. Now simply
- 18:34Speaker 1: press forward on the throttle and steer with the steering wheel.
- 18:40Speaker 1: The steering wheel pops out of the console in front
- 18:43Speaker 1: of you. You take hold of it with your left hand,
- 18:47Speaker 1: put your right hand on the throttle, and press forward. Instantly,
- 18:53Speaker 1: the hover copter surge is ahead. Whoa, you say, as
- 18:58Speaker 1: the trees blurbneath. You pull back slightly on the wheel
- 19:03Speaker 1: and the craft climbs pointing upwards. You angle left to
- 19:08Speaker 1: avoid a group of buildings.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Just in time.
- 19:12Speaker 1: You should be more careful. Quantum says buildings are to
- 19:16Speaker 1: be avoided. Luckily, I have built in safety devices to
- 19:22Speaker 1: take over control if you are doing something too dangerous. Oh,
- 19:28Speaker 1: probably a good idea. The hover copter continues to shoot
- 19:33Speaker 1: forward atn incredible speed as adrenaline pumps through your body.
- 19:38Speaker 1: You are doing exceptionally well for a first attempt. However,
- 19:43Speaker 1: the depository of electronic waste is not particularly close. I
- 19:49Speaker 1: suggest you give it a little more gas.
- 19:55Speaker 2: Okay.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Once you find yourself high above any possible obstacles, you
- 20:01Speaker 1: do exactly as Quantum suggests and press forward on the throttle.
- 20:07Speaker 1: The ship zooms forward at incredible speed, and you hear
- 20:12Speaker 1: a sudden banging noise as you presumably break the sound barrier.
- 20:18Speaker 1: You may notice that you don't feel the speed as
- 20:21Speaker 1: much as one might in a traditional Earth aircraft. Quantum
- 20:25Speaker 1: says that is because I have also built in a
- 20:30Speaker 1: small artificial gravity device. This way you can travel at
- 20:35Speaker 1: up to ten g's without feeling the acceleration against your body.
- 20:42Speaker 1: You zoom up through the clouds and over top of
- 20:46Speaker 1: the world at absolutely incredible speed until Quantum's voice appears again.
- 20:54Speaker 1: I believe we are reaching the destination. Lower your altitude
- 20:59Speaker 1: and switch back to hover mode. You look at the
- 21:02Speaker 1: little GPS and see that the little dot that indicates
- 21:06Speaker 1: where you are is approaching. The little dot that indicates
- 21:10Speaker 1: where the e waste is. You slowly pull back on
- 21:15Speaker 1: the throttle a little bit and push forward, dipping down
- 21:20Speaker 1: below the clouds at a much more reasonable speed. Below
- 21:25Speaker 1: you lies a huge sprawl of discarded machines, Mountains upon
- 21:32Speaker 1: mountains of broken monitors, televisions, old computers, tangled wires, printers, microwaves, cables, keyboards, phones,
- 21:43Speaker 1: and piles of metal frames just glinting in the sun.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Oho you say yes, Quantum says humanity is extremely skilled
- 21:56Speaker 1: at inventing future garbage. You lower into hover mode and
- 22:02Speaker 1: slowly use the lever to bring the craft down over
- 22:06Speaker 1: top of the site. Activate the Collector. Quantum suggests. A
- 22:13Speaker 1: screen over to your right lights up with a button
- 22:17Speaker 1: that says activate Collector. As soon as you press the button,
- 22:23Speaker 1: the screen displays all of the garbage below and asks
- 22:27Speaker 1: you to select a target. You select, a gigantic pile
- 22:32Speaker 1: of garbage hit except and a cone of energy shoots
- 22:39Speaker 1: downward like a tractor beam. Suddenly, broken electronics begin lifting
- 22:45Speaker 1: from the heaps below, small pieces at first, and then
- 22:49Speaker 1: wull clusters of devices, enormous tangles of metal and wire.
- 22:55Speaker 1: They rise into the beam, vanish into the intake, and
- 22:59Speaker 1: are instantly deatomized, breaking them down into their well most
- 23:06Speaker 1: basic components. The energy tanks at the back begin to
- 23:11Speaker 1: glow brighter and brighter. The process is actually astonishingly fast, Quantum,
- 23:21Speaker 1: you say as you watch, this thing is incredible. Yes,
- 23:25Speaker 1: Quantum says, I am aware. The ability to use a
- 23:31Speaker 1: larger three D printer allowed me to construct more advanced materials.
- 23:36Speaker 1: In this case, you have now collected a substantial amount
- 23:41Speaker 1: of material. We should return. You turn off the little
- 23:48Speaker 1: garbage vacuum device and lift back up into the air
- 23:52Speaker 1: above the clouds, before switching into flight mode once again
- 23:57Speaker 1: and pressing forward on the throttle again. You hear a
- 24:01Speaker 1: loud boom as you pass the sound barrier and keep
- 24:05Speaker 1: on going. The clouds zip below you as you keep
- 24:09Speaker 1: an eye on your little GPS, checking to see if
- 24:13Speaker 1: you're anywhere near your home, and then you see something in.
- 24:17Speaker 2: Front of you. It grows larger and larger.
- 24:21Speaker 1: At first it looks a little bit like a bird,
- 24:24Speaker 1: and then you realize it's an airplane, an airplane that
- 24:28Speaker 1: you're heading directly towards. You quickly pull back on the
- 24:33Speaker 1: joystick or steering wheel, I should say, and the ship
- 24:37Speaker 1: zooms up above the gigantic passenger plane, then past it
- 24:42Speaker 1: at incredible speed. You press forward and dip below the
- 24:47Speaker 1: clouds until things start to look rather familiar again, until
- 24:53Speaker 1: you see your own home. You switch to hover mode
- 24:59Speaker 1: and sl slowly lower the thing down towards your house.
- 25:04Speaker 1: A huge hatch opens in your yard out of seemingly nowhere,
- 25:11Speaker 1: and you carefully aim the ship directly above it, and
- 25:15Speaker 1: then slowly lower it down.
- 25:18Speaker 2: Through the hatch.
- 25:20Speaker 1: The hatch closes above you, the sunlight disappears, and immediately
- 25:27Speaker 1: the little helper bots are already moving, grabbing the huge
- 25:31Speaker 1: storage tanks and moving them over to the three D printer.
- 25:35Speaker 1: You look over to see the little backpack sized submarine
- 25:40Speaker 1: already in place, and then the printer starts up. It
- 25:46Speaker 1: hums to life. Golden energy surges through the transparent channels
- 25:51Speaker 1: in the machine, and you see parts forming with incredible speed. Walls, panels, engines,
- 26:00Speaker 1: mechanical arms, collector systems, printing modules, and all sorts of
- 26:04Speaker 1: other pieces put together in a gigantic metal square or
- 26:10Speaker 1: wel cube. Before you know it, the gigantic square is
- 26:16Speaker 1: completely made. It's time to upgrade our ocean cleanup operation.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Please lift the hover copter up higher so we can
- 26:27Speaker 1: activate the tractor beam. Uh. Okay, you haven't even had
- 26:34Speaker 1: time to get out of the thing in the first place,
- 26:36Speaker 1: because Quantum moves rather quickly. The hatch above you opens
- 26:41Speaker 1: up again and you use the lever on the right
- 26:45Speaker 1: to increase your altitude. Hovering just above the ground beside
- 26:50Speaker 1: your home, the helper bots fly the gigantic square below you,
- 26:57Speaker 1: and Quantum's voice appears again. Activate the tractor beam, Quantum says,
- 27:04Speaker 1: and another little button lights up tractor beam. You press
- 27:10Speaker 1: the button, a light shines down below you and snaps
- 27:14Speaker 1: the gigantic square that apparently folds out into a submarine
- 27:19Speaker 1: onto the bottom of the hover copter. Next destination, the
- 27:25Speaker 1: Pacific garbage patch, a little GPS map appears once again.
- 27:32Speaker 1: You lift the ship up high above the clouds, before
- 27:36Speaker 1: once again switching to flight mode and pressing forward on
- 27:40Speaker 1: the throttle again. There's a gigantic boom as you pass
- 27:45Speaker 1: the sound barrier and zip forward over top of cities,
- 27:51Speaker 1: over top of forests and lakes and rivers, until you
- 27:55Speaker 1: eventually come to a huge body of water, the Pacific Ocean.
- 28:02Speaker 1: You zip over the ocean at incredible speed until the
- 28:06Speaker 1: water below begins to change. You slow down as you
- 28:12Speaker 1: see scattered debris appear first, and lower the ship towards
- 28:17Speaker 1: the water. Soon you see larger clusters than wide streaks
- 28:23Speaker 1: of floating garbage, then, at last a great sprawling mass
- 28:29Speaker 1: of the patch itself. You slow into hover mode and
- 28:35Speaker 1: lower the giant cube toward the water. Stand by for activation,
- 28:41Speaker 1: Quantum says, activating submode. The tractor beam disengages. The square
- 28:48Speaker 1: falls to the ground and splashes into the water, and
- 28:52Speaker 1: then it begins to unfold. Panels split apart, sections extend,
- 28:59Speaker 1: Haull pieces rotate outward. Massive side collectors swing into place,
- 29:04Speaker 1: A larger body emerges from within the cube. Windows appear,
- 29:09Speaker 1: tanks extend. A wide rear section opens up to reveal
- 29:15Speaker 1: something new, a whole fabrication bay with its own three
- 29:20Speaker 1: D printer and storage area, until that too becomes completely
- 29:25Speaker 1: covered in a hard metal shell. You stare through the
- 29:30Speaker 1: cockpit at this strange transformation. The new submarine is huge.
- 29:38Speaker 1: That's gigantic, you say, I am glad you approve it
- 29:44Speaker 1: had to be gigantic. Quantum replies, because it is no
- 29:49Speaker 1: longer a simple submarine. It is now a mother sub
- 29:55Speaker 1: I have added storage and printing chambers on the back.
- 29:59Speaker 1: This the vessel can now process collected waste into usable
- 30:03Speaker 1: energy and fabricate additional clean up devices in the field
- 30:09Speaker 1: so it can build more machines. Well it's out here,
- 30:15Speaker 1: that is correct. Some will collect floating debris, Some will
- 30:21Speaker 1: travel underwater to recover submerged waste. Some can be deployed
- 30:26Speaker 1: near inlets and river mouths where much of the plastic
- 30:30Speaker 1: enters the water in the first place. As I mentioned earlier,
- 30:35Speaker 1: an estimated nineteen to twenty three million tons of plastic
- 30:39Speaker 1: waste enter aquatic ecosystems every year. Interception is now a priority.
- 30:47Speaker 1: You lower the hovercraft onto the surface nearby, climb out
- 30:52Speaker 1: and board the mother ship. Inside everything is bigger than before.
- 30:59Speaker 1: There's more room to move around, more screens, more controls,
- 31:04Speaker 1: and in the rear, behind a sealed doorway, a new
- 31:08Speaker 1: on board printer glowing with quiet power. You sit at
- 31:14Speaker 1: the controls and start the collectors. The mother sub moves forward.
- 31:21Speaker 1: Huge amounts of floating plastic slide into the front system.
- 31:26Speaker 1: They're pulled inwards, deatomized, and routed into the internal energy
- 31:32Speaker 1: banks on a nearby screen. The available material count rises rapidly.
- 31:40Speaker 1: Then the rear printer comes to life. Inside the fabrication chamber.
- 31:46Speaker 1: At the back, metal parts begin appearing almost immediately. A
- 31:52Speaker 1: small submersible body forms, smooth and compact with miniature collector
- 31:59Speaker 1: arms and a rear intake. You watch fascinated as a
- 32:04Speaker 1: dissembled piece by piece. Quantum, are you building another sub already?
- 32:10Speaker 1: That is correct, he says, this is Unit one, autonomous
- 32:16Speaker 1: debris collection submersible. The little machine finishes printing, a hatch
- 32:22Speaker 1: opens at the rear of the mother sub, and the
- 32:26Speaker 1: many sub drops neatly into the water. On the display,
- 32:31Speaker 1: you watch it dive beneath the surface and begin moving away.
- 32:37Speaker 1: It will now collect debris independently and return stored energy
- 32:42Speaker 1: to the mothership. The printer starts again. A second many
- 32:48Speaker 1: sub forms, then a third. After that, a group of
- 32:53Speaker 1: little hovering helper drones are printed, as well, little flying
- 32:58Speaker 1: robots that can put together together smaller pieces into larger structures,
- 33:03Speaker 1: or move stored energy bins from one machine to another.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Before long, the operation has become something much larger than
- 33:14Speaker 1: one kid in one submarine. The mother sub moves steadily
- 33:19Speaker 1: through the garbage patch while it's new helpers spread out
- 33:25Speaker 1: like a growing clean up fleet. You stand in the
- 33:29Speaker 1: center of it all, looking from the front screens to
- 33:32Speaker 1: the fabrication bade, the glowing ocean outside, and realize that
- 33:38Speaker 1: this could actually change the world using garbage to create
- 33:45Speaker 1: new materials. This is amazing. And since we're using all
- 33:53Speaker 1: of the garbage to create more things. To get rid
- 33:56Speaker 1: of the garbage, we'll have more material then we know
- 34:00Speaker 1: what to do with Before well before you'll even know it.
- 34:07Speaker 1: I believe your immediate task here is complete. The cleanup
- 34:11Speaker 1: fleet can continue autonomously. Also, I believe it is your bedtime.
- 34:18Speaker 1: You smile, so you're saying I should go home. Uh, yes,
- 34:24Speaker 1: that is exactly what I'm saying. You leave the mothership running,
- 34:30Speaker 1: climb back into the hover copter, and lift up over
- 34:34Speaker 1: top of the water. You rise high above the ocean
- 34:38Speaker 1: before switching into flight mode and pressing forward on the throttle,
- 34:43Speaker 1: once again creating another sonic boom as you blast into
- 34:47Speaker 1: the sky. You fly over the ocean until you come
- 34:52Speaker 1: back to the land, where you once again fly over
- 34:56Speaker 1: cities and oceans and lakes and rivers before coming to
- 35:01Speaker 1: some nearby territory. You switch back to hover mode as
- 35:06Speaker 1: you approach your house and carefully lower the machine down
- 35:11Speaker 1: into the little well cargo bay hatch. The hatch closes
- 35:18Speaker 1: above you as the hovercraft or hover copter comes down
- 35:24Speaker 1: with a soft landing and a little hiss, the hover
- 35:29Speaker 1: copter opens up. You climb down out of the hatch
- 35:34Speaker 1: and walk back over to the slide that brought you
- 35:37Speaker 1: down here in the first place. Uh, Quantum, how do
- 35:41Speaker 1: I get out of here?
- 35:42Speaker 2: You ask?
- 35:43Speaker 1: That is easy. You just use reverse slide mode. Have
- 35:48Speaker 1: a seat on the slide as if you just arrived,
- 35:52Speaker 1: Quantum says. So you sit down on the bottom of
- 35:56Speaker 1: the slide facing the normal direction. A little circular piece
- 36:01Speaker 1: of metal folds up from the bottom and pushes against
- 36:05Speaker 1: your feet, lifting you backwards up the slide, around the
- 36:11Speaker 1: corners and up through the hatch until you find yourself
- 36:15Speaker 1: standing in the middle of your bedroom, above the little
- 36:20Speaker 1: secret hatch. You step off, close the hatch door, and
- 36:26Speaker 1: move over to the bedstand and press the little red
- 36:30Speaker 1: button again. The bed slides back into place. You climb
- 36:36Speaker 1: into it, pull the covers up over top of yourself,
- 36:40Speaker 1: and rest your head on the pillow.
- 36:44Speaker 2: The lights in the room turn.
- 36:46Speaker 1: Off and you begin to just focus on your breath,
- 36:52Speaker 1: noticing your stomach rise and fall with each deep breath.
- 36:59Speaker 1: With each out breath, you try to release a little
- 37:03Speaker 1: more tension, noticing any tension in your arms and your
- 37:08Speaker 1: legs and letting it melt away. Soon it feels as
- 37:17Speaker 1: if you're just floating on a cloud. Your mind wanders
- 37:23Speaker 1: off to thoughts of new dreams, new adventures, and new
- 37:31Speaker 1: fun things you can build with a three D printer.
- 37:35Speaker 3: To come, good night everyone in.
- 39:25Speaker 4: New York. More union, no no thing, no.
- 44:27Speaker 3: More. M m
- 50:06Speaker 1: M
