- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Many managers struggle to build high levels of trust because they don't appreciate how far you need to go to align all of your actions, decisions and behaviours behind what you ask for from the team.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Managers create inconsistencies which damage trust.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: The more consistent and aligned your actions, decisions and behaviors are, the higher levels of trust that you can build in a shorter space of time.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: I have personally taken the worst team in a business and transformed it into one of the best within 6 to 12 months.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: I've done this in multiple different businesses and been awarded best team prizes in the process.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Over 50,000 managers per month trust my management advice on YouTube and Spotify.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Before taking any action to build trust, you need to get yourself mentally in the right place.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: So let's talk about why trust building starts in your head.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Your attitude and mental approach will leak out through your actions, decisions and behaviors.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: All your team will be watching your every move every single day.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: They will constantly be translating your actions into what your attitude and approach means for them.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: This is where trust is won or lost.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Team trusts what you do, not really what you say are right.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: The most important thing you can do is choose what attitude towards your team that you are going to show up with.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: To build trust quickly, your attitude needs to be focused on helping them be better and perform better.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: The best leaders know that serving their team is the best way to serve themselves.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: In practical terms, this means that everything you do should be in service of helping the team be better.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: And by better I mean to build a positive team-focused culture that drives higher team performance.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: The more you demonstrate that you are there for the team and that you believe your job is to help the team be successful, the more the team will trust you.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: And just to be clear, serving the team is not about being too nice, you know, allowing team members to be unaccountable or to shirk their responsibilities.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: You are not trying to win friends or popularity contests either.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: Serving the team means taking the tough and unpopular decisions when they are best for the team.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: You demand high levels of accountability and ownership from team members.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: You do everything to get the best from the team as a whole.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: To give you practical guidance on how to align your actions, decisions and behaviours to create high levels of trust fast.

- 4:00SPEAKER_00: So, example one for winning team trust quickly.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Assuming you're asking your team verbally and in writing to you know, I want each of you to help your team members when they ask for help and do so as quickly as practical.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Some of the examples of the actions you would consistently undertake.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Each opportunity you get, you go out of your way to provide personal and visible help to team members when they ask for help or when they need help.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: An example of the decisions you might take.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: When the opportunity arises, take decisions to clearly support making it easy for team members to give help.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: I don't criticise staff for taking time out to help colleagues or prioritize resources for team members with higher priority work than you.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: For example, some of the behaviours that you might display to build trust, publicly praise those that help other team members.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Have corrective conversations in private with team members that don't help their colleagues.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: For building trust in a team quickly, you need all the different ways of communicating your intentions aligned, supporting each other to create a very clear message.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: Example 2 for winning the team's trust at work.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: So assume you're asking a team, you know, we must hit deadlines we agree to and deliver in advance where we can, so our stakeholders know we can be relied upon.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: To build trust in you and your ask, the actions you might take includes working with the team members to negotiate and agree sensible, realistic deadlines.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Your visible support builds the trust that you will back up what you say.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Then you might help team members with advice, guidance, and resources so they can complete their work ahead of time.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: Another example of actions backing up what you say.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Some of the decisions that you might make to build trust in you, you know, allocate time and take action to help get resources in place to help team members complete work early.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: You might choose to keep close to the work so you can help reprioritize the team members as needed so deadlines are hit.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: Some of the behaviours you display to reinforce trust.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Be available to help team members negotiate sensible deadlines or to help them say no.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Back up your team members.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Also be available to help by providing advice and guidance so work throughputs can be sped up.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: Don't actually do your team members' work though.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: To gain the trust of the team quickly, align your asks with your actions, decisions, and behaviours.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: The team can then see you do what you say consistently day in, day out.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: Example three to encourage your team's trust.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Your ask of the team might be, you know, once we set goals and priorities, we stick to and deliver against those priorities before creating new priorities.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: To create trust in your ask, your actions might be to keep talking about and monitoring progress against weekly priorities across the team.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: To make this action visible, you can circulate progress update summaries.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: You know if you focus on the priorities, your team will too.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: For winning team trust, the decisions you might make include saying no to as much as practical of the work that is not aligned to priorities.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: And of course, you say yes to work that is aligned or supports completion of the team priorities.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: The behaviors you might display to build trust include visibly protecting the team so they have the time and space to complete their work against weekly priorities.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: To make this visible, you might communicate these events to the team where sensible.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: Building team trust needs the alignment of your asks with your actions, decisions, and behaviors.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: The message to the team becomes very clear when you align as much as possible.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: When asks and actions say one thing and your decisions behavior say something different, the team becomes confused and loses some trust in you.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Alignment matters in winning team trust quickly.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: So, in summary, gaining self-trust is working to align as many of your asks, actions, decisions, and behaviors in the same direction, all supporting each other.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: To do this very well and gain trust very quickly, you need self-awareness, determination, courage, and discipline.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: You can improve all of these skills with practice.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: Start right now thinking about the impact of everything you do on what you have asked your team.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: Do your actions, decisions, and behaviors build trust or create confusion in your team.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: And if you struggle to build deep levels of trust within teams quickly, take a look at our coaching programmes available to provide you with clear, honest feedback and what to change so you can build deeper trust within your team a lot quicker.
