- 0:00Welcome to Doctor Turned Health Coach Podcast. My name is Dr.
- 0:04Ishori. Welcome to another podcast episode.
- 0:07I want to talk about mindset and beliefs, and I know it's a very fluffy subject,
- 0:12and a lot of my health coaching clients sometimes are like, Oh man,
- 0:17Doc, I've heard this so many times, and there's just so many ways to approach this topic.
- 0:22In the end, it ends up being not very approachable. Okay, I get that.
- 0:26Maybe today I'm going to give you three ways to approach it so that it actually
- 0:32is actionable, not just something in the atmosphere, right?
- 0:37So mindset and beliefs are important
- 0:40because there is no way to reach something
- 0:44that seems unreachable or something that seems complicated or complex unless
- 0:50you break it down into smaller actionable steps and you actually believe that
- 0:57in the end you will achieve that set goal. I'll give you a perfect example.
- 1:02Medical school, becoming a doctor for many people is so insurmountable.
- 1:06It's so unimaginable to go from an 18, 19 year old or a college,
- 1:13you know, graduating college student that one day you're going to perform this
- 1:17really complicated aortic root surgery on a person whose heart is beating and moving all around.
- 1:26And it's just impossible to imagine you're going to become a cardiothoracic
- 1:29surgeon, but of course, that's not the way it works.
- 1:33The person first takes all these tiny, small classes, and then they take exams,
- 1:39and every one of these actions and steps gets them a little bit closer.
- 1:42It reinforces their mindset and their belief.
- 1:46And of course, nobody's really going to make it through medical school unless
- 1:50they actually believe that they can one day become a doctor.
- 1:53This is reinforced by the medical school curriculum, by talking to other graduates,
- 2:00by seeing physicians who were once students give lectures to this incoming new class.
- 2:07And unfortunately, every single year, there are a percentage of medical students,
- 2:13though fortunately pretty small in the U.S., who end up not making it through.
- 2:17They drop out or they have to be kicked out.
- 2:21And the reason for that often is because they just don't believe it,
- 2:25they don't have the mindset, they don't have also the idea of the steps that
- 2:31they need to take to get to that end goal.
- 2:34For many of my health coaching clients, oftentimes they come to me because they
- 2:38are looking for a pretty major transformation.
- 2:42They have tried a lot of things, they've tried medications, they've tried it
- 2:45on their own, maybe they've had some successes, but in the end they didn't get
- 2:50what they were after, and so they're looking for something bigger.
- 2:54This is going to require a mindset shift and a belief in the end goal that if I do these things,
- 3:03I'm going to achieve this particular health goal which is why the first few
- 3:08months in my health coaching practice I really really want to dive in and figure
- 3:11out what are your health goals what is it you're actually after,
- 3:15somebody says I don't want to get a heart attack I don't want to die of a stroke
- 3:18I don't want to get cancer I want to lose weight I want to improve my blood pressure.
- 3:24And these are great goals to have but you have to have a belief that you can
- 3:29actually achieve those You have to actually visualize yourself achieving that.
- 3:34And then you can cultivate, meaning you can develop the new mindset necessary to support that belief.
- 3:44So let's break it down into these three important actionable takeaways that
- 3:50you can do so that this doesn't feel as fluffy as maybe what you thought in the beginning.
- 3:55So number one, go find examples of people who have transformed their health
- 4:02in the way that you've tried to transform it.
- 4:04Whether friends, family, co-workers, people on Reddit, people in health groups, on Facebook groups.
- 4:13Go find some examples of people who have actually achieved it.
- 4:17Look at YouTube, look at Instagram.
- 4:18And that is going to first reinforce that it is possible.
- 4:23Next, you need to develop the belief that you can achieve what you're going
- 4:28to achieve. You need to believe in what you're doing.
- 4:32So a great example might be global warming. Do you believe in global warming?
- 4:36I mean, some people don't.
- 4:38Do you believe in poverty? Okay, some people don't. Some people just say people are lazy.
- 4:43These are things you need to cultivate on your own.
- 4:46You have to sit down with the facts, with a pen and paper,
- 4:51maybe with a recording device, and cultivate,
- 4:55form your beliefs that, yes, I can imagine myself six months from now with this
- 5:02body, with this blood pressure, with this health biomarker, with this new state.
- 5:07I can believe it. I can see it. I can visualize it.
- 5:10I know I believe it. Yes, I'm still going to have doubts. There's nothing wrong
- 5:13with that. but at the core, or at least 80% of me, believes it.
- 5:19And finally, number three is developing the mindset necessary to achieve this.
- 5:24You know that if you continue doing certain actions, they're going to lead to
- 5:28the same results. You know that because maybe for the past five years,
- 5:32you've had the same blood pressure.
- 5:34So we can assume that if you continue doing the same things you've done for
- 5:36the past five years, you're going to maintain the same blood pressure.
- 5:41Meaning that of these actions that I helped you identify as a health coach,
- 5:46if one of these changed, you would have a change in your blood pressure. Likely.
- 5:52And if you attacked multiple of these, if you addressed multiple of these points,
- 5:56you probably would have an even more significant change.
- 5:58That's the mindset that fuels the belief, the mindset that these are the things
- 6:05that are leading to this outcome.
- 6:06And if I adjust these, then I'm going to have the right outcome.
