Latest / The PNW Podcast / Oregon Ducks SHOCKED by Oklahoma State — What Happens Now?
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_01: The other thing I saw out there over the weekend, Drew, was zero confidence.
- 0:03SPEAKER_01: Zero confidence from some guys that uh should be puffing their chest out sometime in April when the first and second round of the NFL draft is being called.
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: Those guys should be confident, and they weren't the Oh my goodness.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Welcome into the PNW podcast.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: This one uh much anticipated after an earthquake of a weekend, especially, um, you know, I guess let me back up a second.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Getting breathy already.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: We're just happy I didn't come in here with a cocktail today, Marcus.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Um, we are at the Stafford Hills Club where I am going to use some time to relax when we're done doing the podcast today, because um, let's be honest, the Oregon Ducks falling to Oklahoma State over the weekend.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Just put an absolute spork in the middle of my spine.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Um, so we're working on that.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: But of course, if you want to relax yourself, it's gonna be hard to do today.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: But if there's ever a place, Stafford Hills Club, check out Staffordhills.com.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: For all the details, tell them Drew sent you for half off your initiation.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Um, so Marcus, we're just gonna dive right into it.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: The Oregon Ducks kinda came out flat against Oklahoma State, and early on it looked like they were going to be in in big trouble if it wasn't for a hand or two tipped passes that that turned into huge turnarounds in this game for the Ducks.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: It could have been an even bigger blowout, but at the end of the day, Oklahoma State punches their ticket and beats the Ducks 39 to 31.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: Marcus.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: What in the heck is going on, dude?
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: Man, it's one of those games, Drew, that I was really glad I was by myself for.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, you you football's a very social thing.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: We're always going to the games, we got the tailgates and everything, but a game like that, I don't want to be around anyone because I don't like the person I become.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: Um, just a lot of really glaring weaknesses on this Oregon Ducks team that I didn't expect to see.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: Uh, I expected after the win at Boise State to clean up some of the stuff.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: Uh, penalties were still all over the place this week.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: That was really bad.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: We couldn't stop a four-man rush with that line, Drew.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: And we had six linemen in there for a majority of that game.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: Um, we couldn't create pressure with our four-man front that's supposedly the best in the world.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't think we have more than about two serviceable linebackers that we can play that uh we don't need to hide from the other team.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: And uh, I'll tell you, Dante Moore felt like he was seeing ghosts all day long, Drew.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: Um, I I just don't know.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: It's I'll tell you this.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: It's been since Mark Helfrich was here in his final year that I've been this worried about a duck squad.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: And I can't reconcile that fact.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: Even, you know, 24 hours later, I can't sit with the fact that we've got this much talent on the roster, and that was the product that we brought to Stillwater, Oklahoma.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: Whether delay or not, that was way more than a team that uh that just has a few things to clean up and we're gonna be uh hitting on all cylinders.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: That team looks like it's still in the shop for a couple of weeks before we take it out and run it down the street, Drew.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't think there's ever a better time to go play Portland State, but I'm not exactly confident in that either.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: I mean, I saw a bunch of people posting things like, should we not have scheduled Oklahoma State?
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Do you remember what happened last time?
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: We beat them by like 60, or I mean, it was a massive victory, and we were humongous favorites again here over the weekend, but it was also one of those deals where when you're watching it, it just didn't feel right.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Something felt wrong about it.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: It was just like three and out, three and out, and and I mentioned it before, but you know, you get the the tip pass that ends up going back for a touchdown.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: You get another one that basically bails us out again, where the ducks, if it's not for that, I we're blown out in the first half.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we're probably down by 28 points at that point, and you know, going into halftime, down by seven.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: I'm like, okay, you can kind of write the ship here.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: But I have said this for a long time.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: And when we had Aaron Fentris on, I kind of alluded to the fact that there's a little piece of me that last season I saw when Adversity showed up and they pressured Dante more, that he has this strange ability to just kind of fade into the bush.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: And I know that he was trying to be more of a leader over the weekend and was like, you finally saw him yelling towards his teammates and trying to like hype them up, but I don't know that that looked anything like a first overall pick in the NFL draft.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: I mean, the guy on the other side of the ball, Drew Mestimaker, I had to just le look down to remember his name again because this is the first time I've ever heard of him.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: And he comes in and just made it look like Peyton Manning was in the building.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: And that's a guy that never even started a game in high school.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: Was a was a walk-on as, you know, he he was a punter in high school.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: He played some safety, uh, was a walk-on at North Texas and found his way onto the squad and is now matching up and making look bad a five-star elite blue chip recruit who's got a lot of experience under his belt at the at the big time, Drew.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: And I'm not the guy that's gonna start calling for a college football quarterback's head.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: I don't like to do that.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: I will tell you right now, um, I agree with what you said.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: That wasn't a number one overall pick, and that definitely wasn't um uh a top 20 team to me.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: I didn't feel like maybe not even a top 25 team that I saw.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: And what worries me, Drew, is every time that we go to an overmanned squad like that, we're playing Oklahoma State.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: There's no question that as far as all the experts' ranks are concerned, Oregon is head and shoulders above Oklahoma State when it comes to the talent on the roster.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: So I look at what happened yesterday where they just put their thumb on us from the snap of the very first ball.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: Did they see something on tape?
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: Why is it that sometimes we can go out in these games and all of a sudden it's like some coaches just have our number?
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: You felt it with uh Kurt Signetti last year against Indiana.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, it it really doesn't make sense to me, but it's apparent when we're getting outcoached.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: And we got outcoached yesterday, too, which doesn't happen very often to Dan Lanning, but we got way outcoached yesterday.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there's a number of things.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: And I'm going to piggyback that comment by saying Dante Moore's not the only problem here.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: The offensive line couldn't protect him.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: He put the ball on the numbers a bunch of times where we just dropped the ball.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: We'll get to the fumble at the end of the game, but take it from the very beginning when Mesta Maker they did a ball fake and he ran for like 80 yards down the left side, and our fastest player on the field had to catch him at the one, and and luckily we held him to three points there.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: But if you look at that, our entire team bit on that.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: And and part of that is a is a defensive call by the coordinators to do that.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: But in soccer, you call it fishing.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: You should never go fishing and overcommit because if you miss, they're gone.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: And that's exactly what this guy did.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: He made it seem like he was this run and gun quarterback when nobody ever had him pinned as that.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: So you take that, and then in the fourth quarter, I guarantee you whatever's left of the hair up on your head you tried to rip out last night or over the weekend, sorry, when um we decided to go for it on fourth and eight in our own territory, down by less than a touchdown.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: Like, what are we doing with six minutes left in the game?
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: Six minutes, six left.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: You could have punted and played position ball with three timeouts.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: None of that makes sense to me.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: And I understand the Oregon way, because we we've lived and died by it, right, Marcus, where we go for it on fourth, we've got the big balls, and and it pays out a lot of times.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: But this wasn't that move.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: You have to punt that ball in your own territory because best case scenario, which is what happened, you hold him to three points, but we let him have two or three first downs first, and he eat the majority of that clock.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: So before we totally fumble our early season away, we already need a touchdown and a two-point conversion to get it done.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: If we punt the ball, guess who punts it back to us with a chance to win?
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's a no-brainer.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: And when your games are going like this, Drew, you'll hear coaches always say, you gotta play to your strengths.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: And our punter yesterday, and this is not something that in the badass in the decades of being a Duck fan, I've ever really said, but our punter was one of the shining bright spots yesterday, kicking 50-yard bombs, just missiles down the field.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: You gotta play field position sometimes.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: And we lost the field position game yesterday when we had the best punter on the field that was actually flipping the field for us and giving Oklahoma State 70, 75, 80 yards to drive.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: And at one point in time, we almost got gifted a muffed punt in the end zone.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: I mean, you you watch what's happening in those plays and you think to yourself, does the offense have it in them to get eight yards?
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: I don't know if I would have trusted the offense to get eight yards on any play yesterday, let alone in that situation with that much pressure on the line.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: Give the ball to the 28-year-old Australian, let him kick the down under out of it, and start over with defense because we did have one defender show up yesterday, Drew.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: Devin Jackson showed up, and that guy was playing his ass off the 96-yard pick six.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: He's the one that ran Drew Mestimaker down on that very first play.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: Um, I mean, it was, and then listen, I again, I don't want to pinpoint players and say, get them off the team or they lose a starting job.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: But our our safeties yesterday, Drew, uh Koy Peric maybe notwithstanding, but Aaron Flowers was out of position all day long yesterday.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: And it started on that very first play that you're talking about.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: Three great big steps to the wrong side of the field before his eyes were in the right position and realized that the quarterback was sprinting past him.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: That's a safety.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: That guy should be able to catch the quarterback, and he was so burnt he never had a chance.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: So um, there's some discipline problems on this team, Drew, and it doesn't seem like that because we don't have guys getting speeding tickets.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: We don't have guys getting DUIs and and showing up in the newspaper for all the wrong reasons.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: But what happened yesterday?
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: Where is the discipline of this very experienced roster?
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: A lot of these guys have a yeah, there you go.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: I mean, the price tag alone, and now I will agree with you.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: The only game balls for me go to the punter.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: And of course, Devin Jackson, he's responsible for 18.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: That's an 18-point swing, those two plays, because they're gonna go score another touchdown.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: Instead, he picks it off, runs it all the way back.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: So there's the 14-point swing.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: He shaved four points off when he ran down that quarterback.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: He's a badass, and he's for his size to be that fast, you'll see him playing on Sundays.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: But and may and I think you'll see that punter playing on Sundays as well.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: That guy can juice one.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: But the rest of us, I don't know where we were.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, there were moments.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: We had a couple wide receivers who had moments, but every one of them had bricks for hands.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: And Dante wasn't putting the ball in the breadbasket half the time, making people stretch way out.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: But we made Oklahoma State look like a top 10 team.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we did.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: Now, I know they're better than they were last uh the last time we played them when we hung almost 70 on them.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: There's no question.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: I think there's something over there's over 50 or 60 transfers on that squad.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: Uh, I think 14 or 15 players, something like that in that neighborhood from North Texas, which is where the coach is from, it's where the quarterback's from.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: But they lost to Tulsa by two touchdowns last week.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: And that is that was not a team that belonged on the field with Oregon.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: But I don't know, man.
- 12:56SPEAKER_01: If we can't fix this problem with the offensive line, I think you got to start in the trenches here.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: We have to give Dante some time to be able to make these reads.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: And something we haven't even mentioned, Drew, the play calling was atrocious yesterday.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: We can't stop a four-man rush, and when we get into third and eight, we're calling double moves and these long developing routes where the receivers are expected to get 30 or 40 yards downfield.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: Dante doesn't have time to snap the ball and check his watch, let alone let you get 40 yards downfield and then throw the ball.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: So um I I want to see better stuff out of our coordinators, both on offense and defense, because you guys got a lot to prove and some big shoes to fill.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: Um, but I I think also you got to go back to Dan Lanning here.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: You got out coach, that's on the head coach.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: And listen, I love the guy.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: I want to be his best friend, but yeah, it was a real poor performance yesterday, the worst in his tenure by far.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's never not he's never lost to an unranked opponent.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: You know, the the Ducks hadn't lost to a team that hadn't played in the national championship in four years, and that team was the Oregon State Beavers.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: That's that's a wild statistic.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: But the one thing I will lay I will leave for the the coaching thing that is just kind of an exclamation point here is fourth and one.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: Fourth and one, and we throw a little tricky play where we try and bomb a slant over the middle, and granted, it was a drop, it wasn't a perfect pass.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: But why can't we go ahead and minimize our risk?
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: It's fourth and one.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: You have the you have all of the firepower there.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: Put your nose down and move the line a yard, and then let's talk on second or third down.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: So we don't just immediately pull the air break on our team and then give the momentum right back to a team who's had our number.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'm no football coach, but come on.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: I think we're also dealing with a uh a slightly banged up Jordan Davidson, uh Davison Drew.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: I think, you know, there was some whispers that came out in camp that he got injured and was helped off the field.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: And then that exact same day, if you remember, the Ducks came out and said, I don't know what you're talking about.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: I just practiced with him, everything was fine.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: How come he hasn't been the first running back on the field then?
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: In either game that we've played, and I'm not taking anything away from De'Arre Hill yet, uh, but DeRere Hill is not the big bodied back, and he's not the guy that we leaned on all year last year.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: He's the change of pace guy.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: He's the guy that you let Jordan Davison come in and punch you five times in the face, and then you hand it to De'Arre Hill and he runs past you because you're you're licking your wounds.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: And DeRere Hill started both games.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: He's had the majority of the carries both games.
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: I don't think Jordan Davison is healthy.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: I think that's one thing that is is uh an issue here.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: But again, there's so much smoke and mirrors with all this stuff, Drew, that it's impossible to tell.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: Uh, one thing I know, you hit the nail on the head.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: There might not be a better week to have Portland State come into town.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: Um, and hey, I might also say, like, if we never schedule Boise State again, is it too soon?
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: Probably not for me.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: I could, you know, I'm watching Indiana beat the tar out of Howard.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: I'm watching Miami hang like 77 on Famu or whoever the hell they played.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: And again, I think it's respectable to go out and test yourself in these games.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: I do, but you have to think about how it has the roster come together.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: And they haven't come together very clearly, which is weird because they were all here last year.
- 16:31SPEAKER_01: Why is this team look so much less put together than the team that did it last year?
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: I don't get it, Drew, and I probably won't ever get it.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: And I get to spend this next week talking to myself about it, um, which is probably one of the reasons I should be medicated.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: And and shouldn't we all?
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: But really, I mean, I am I'm a diehard duck fan just like you.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: I was absolutely devastated yesterday.
- 16:56SPEAKER_00: Um the the hater parade, the people who just love to hate the ducks, like that's the biggest parade in their life.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: I, you know, I have something that I could say to them as well.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: But what we're gonna do is we're gonna try and stay positive.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: We're gonna take a quick break.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: When we come back, we're gonna talk about what is ahead for Oregon, what does the schedule look like?
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: How are they gonna work their way through this?
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: We'll also talk about where they fell in the ranks, as well as Ohio State, who didn't have the greatest ending to their night.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: So maybe there is a path forward, and we'll discuss that also a little bit about the Oregon State Beavers and some hope that's happening down in Corvallis here in a sec.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: The podcast is brought to you by Motorsport Hillsboro, where they have you dialed in.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: Not only do they have incredible selection when it comes to everything from bikes, both road and dirt bikes, but also you've got the e-assist mountain bikes there.

- 18:45SPEAKER_00: And my buddy Bruce over at Axiom is locally raised, and he is not part of some big private equity form firm.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: He is live and local right here in the Northwest, and they will dial you in.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: And if you tell them Drew sent you 10% off your first service, and it is starting to get into those colder months, it's right there on the horizon.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: So don't forget$500 off a new water heater if you're running into that.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: I was just dealing with that recently, and Bruce and the gang are the perfect people to take care of you.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: Just tell them that I sent you all the details about what they can do for you at axiompdx.com.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: And brought to you by the Stafford Hills Club, which is the premier place in the Portland area to work out, relax, and just kind of take care of yourself.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: It's a sense of community around here, and they hold the door for you.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: They do all the things they want to see you at Stafford Hills.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: They have top-end tennis, a salt water pool, great workout facilities, and all the greatest classes you could imagine.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: And of course, high rocks training, the premier cutting edge stuff, and it's all happening right here at Stafford Hills.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: Check out all the details on what's going down at Staffordhills.com.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: All right, Marcus, we're gonna try and move past it, but I will say I just wanted to tell you that the end of the game, you know, like we were all doing the same thing, like standing up, staring at the TV, hoping for a miracle, uh, with the ducks down eight there at the end.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: Uh, but I had, because the game was delayed by two hours, I mean, I was supposed to do that and then other things and then take my kids to soccer.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: But I had a 40-minute drive to go to soccer.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: So I did something I rarely do anymore, and that is I turned on Jerry Allen, the voice of the ducks, to kind of guide me through it on the way out there.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: And I will say, him and Jorgie, they're they're great, they're serious homers.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: I mean, even when the game was toasted, they're like, well, maybe something can happen.
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: Like the writing's on the wall, fellas.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: But at the end of the game, when we're down by eight, and all my kids are in the car and they're going, Why aren't we listening to music?
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: And I'm just ignoring them, just turning it up and up and up.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: And we fumble that pitch at the end of the game, and then it was like he dropped it, he turned around, he like looked at it for a second, and then he went for it, and the game was over.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: And for me, I was just so mad that I just immediately just turn hit the radio button to music, and Amy's like, Are you not gonna listen to the rest?
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: I'm like, No, I'm not, because this is over.
- 21:17SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm so disgusted right now that this is over.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: And she's like, anything can happen.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: I'm like, we're kneeling on the ball now.
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: Like, this is I mean, this is gonna be over in a few minutes.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: So, like, you know, I try tried to stay there, but then I had to just get out of it because it was killing my mood, and I could feel I was sucking the energy out of a car full of ladies.
- 21:35SPEAKER_00: Um, so I did have to move back to some Taylor Swift or whatever they wanted to listen to.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: But I'm sure you and you were in uh kind of an equal situation there um at the end of that game.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Drew, I was again, I was pacing a livestock trail around my house all day yesterday.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: I mean, I I'm surprised there's actually not like a track because I was just pacing for the entire game and Yeah, when I saw that fumble, I, you know, I'd I'd actually I'd watched my high school alma maters football game on Friday night, and they they uh broadcast them now on a website where you can just tune in.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: There's no play by play, you're just watching the game.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: And my my old Enterprise Outlaws called a pitch.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: They stopped them on fourth and one.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: They called a pitch in the end zone and fumbled the ball in the end zone and the defense recovered.
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: And the the high school player made the same exact mistake that D'Ar Hill made.
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: He dropped the ball and he tried to pick it up.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: And I don't know where you guys all grew up playing football, but I had a coach that if you ever tried to scoop the ball on offense and keep it moving, you were running.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: You were at practice that next week and you were doing two forties goalposts is what we called them.
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: All the way around.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: Go run all the way around the goal posts, and you should fall on the ball.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: The minute that you don't feel the ball in your hands the way it is that it should be on offense, fall on the ball.
- 23:07SPEAKER_01: And he tried to, he took a step and tried to reach down and palm at Drew.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: And when you got a bunch of 200-pound dudes running at you, I don't care how strong your hands are.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: You're not going to grab that ball with one hand and fish it out of that pile.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: And you could see it.
- 23:22SPEAKER_01: I felt so bad for the guy because he fell down and he immediately put his head in his hands and you saw the devastation, but it was just one more thing going wrong.
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: It was just the next wheel falling off the bus, dude.
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: But fall on the ball offense.
- 23:36SPEAKER_01: If you're in high school, if you're a junior high kid listening to this and you got a game coming up Wednesday, fall on the ball when you're on offense and it hits the turf.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: A hundred percent.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: And it was just the nail in the coffin.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: You can't blame that guy.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: You can't only blame Dante.
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: You can't just blame the defense.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: I mean, the defense had multiple plays that kept us in the game, but still uh letting them just pile on the yards all morning long.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: Um now we do have a little hope here, Marcus, because uh Ohio State lost in the waning moments against Texas, blew a 23-3 lead in the fourth quarter.
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: Now, here's the funny thing is um I had a little action with a buddy, um, and it was the rarest thing.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: Ohio State was an underdog by a point and a half.
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: And when I saw that, I don't think I've seen Ohio State be an underdog in like five years.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: So I just found a buddy who was who was uh drinking the the Manning Kool-Aid for Arch Manning over there and you know put a wager on the game, and I figure it's it's in hand.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: And as they just start creeping back and creeping back, and I'm just looking at that score and I'm like, if they don't do anything weird, Texas could win this game by one, knock off the buckeyes, and I still go to the bank.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: And I just sat there and watched it happen moment after moment.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: And the next thing you know, they're having it look like the the end of the Disney night in there when they were setting off the fireworks and the laser lights are gone.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: I mean, they were feeling it.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I love watching the buckeyes fall.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: It's just like a special feeling.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: And my thought is if we have a loss and they have a loss and we beat them, we're still alive in the standings to try and get ourselves to the championship game and find a way into that top 12 when it's time to go.
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: Because if there's ever a time to lose, it's gonna be early.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: Now, I was hoping it wouldn't be against Oklahoma State, but there is hope now.
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: Um, what are we looking at for the rankings now that the dust has settled, Marcus?
- 25:45SPEAKER_01: Well, uh, in in one bright spot, I'm gonna remind you about Drew.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: Going back a couple of years here uh was Notre Dame losing to Northern Iowa and eventually ending up either in the semifinals or the championship game for the college football playoffs.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: So there is still reason to hope.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: And I'm glad that you brought that back because it made me feel a little bit better.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: But we have dropped all the way to 21 in the AP poll, um, below teams like Michigan, uh, below teams like SMU, uh, way below teams like USC and uh Ohio State, of course, Indiana showing up at number four in the polls now, getting a little bit of respect after a couple blowouts.
- 26:27SPEAKER_01: So we're still there.
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: And I can't promise you that I would have put us in the top 25 this week if I had an AP poll vote, Drew.
- 26:34SPEAKER_01: So thanks, guys.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: We we appreciate it.
- 26:36SPEAKER_00: And the nice thing about that is when you're still in the rankings, that means that you can move up quicker.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: If if once you fall out, it's like, can we get back in this week?
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: Can we get back in this week?
- 26:47SPEAKER_00: When you're already in that top 25, it's just really easy for them to be like, oh, 21 beat 15, move them up three spots, or you know, something like that.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: And we have some slingshot games coming up.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: Gotta beat Portland State, gotta throttle them by 50.
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's gotta be no foot off the gas.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: It's gotta be ridiculous.
- 27:07SPEAKER_01: It's gotta be a get right game, and you gotta get right in every single aspect that was wrong in Stillwater.
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: And that's a 730 on a Friday night game, which I'm a little buttered.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: I don't have a ticket to yet.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: Um, but I'm hoping to turn the corner on that throughout the week because I would like to be there to help that along.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: Um, Oregon, USC the following week is gonna be a lot uh a lot of the same there.
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: They're ranked number 12.
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: If if USC wins this weekend, they're likely a top 10 team.
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: And if Oregon can go down to Southern California and knock them off, you've got opportunity there too.
- 27:43SPEAKER_00: And some of the other teams that you named, Marcus, um, well, first of all, you also have Nebraska and UCLA are 2-0.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: It doesn't really matter who they played, they keep winning, they'll be climbing the ranks.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: They play both of those teams.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: Um, forget about Illinois, forget about Northwestern, but then we're going to Ohio State to try and take on a team that will be a top five team by the time that comes around.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: And so there are chances to get back in the dance here.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: And if Michigan keeps having the refs do it their way, they're gonna continue to crawl up as well.
- 28:17SPEAKER_00: They're 2-0 and ranked 19 in the country.
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: So a lot of ranked teams they're waiting for Oregon.
- 28:23SPEAKER_00: I don't know, Washington's still an unranked team at 2-0, which is a little bit confusing to me.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh, didn't look very good against Washington State, though.
- 28:34SPEAKER_01: I could say that if they're uh, you know, passing the eye test, uh, that would that was kind of ugly.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: So I want to see him play uh a little bit better competition before I run my mouth too much about the Huskies, especially in the boat that we're in right now.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: But good points all around, Drew.
- 28:50SPEAKER_01: There are plenty of times to write the ship this year.
- 28:53SPEAKER_01: We've got it, we've got a get right game coming up, then we've got a must-have game, and then you mentioned games like Northwestern and Illinois.
- 29:01SPEAKER_01: You know, Illinois's not terrible.
- 29:02SPEAKER_01: Northwestern really pretty bad.
- 29:05SPEAKER_01: You gotta get right and you gotta blow the doors off those teams.
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: Because the other thing I saw out there uh over the weekend, Drew, was zero confidence.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: Zero confidence from some guys that uh should be puffing their chest out sometime in April when the first and second round of the NFL draft is being called.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: Those guys should be confident and they weren't.
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: So we got to get right.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: And uh man, this it's funny how one game can change a complete outlook on a season.
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: We were sitting here a couple weeks ago talking about if this was a championship team and uh oh how the mighty have fallen, Drew.
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: And I hope I hope that uh my worries about Dante are just blown out of the water um to where he just has these crusher games one after another after another.
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: But I've seen it a couple of times now.
- 29:53SPEAKER_00: I saw it against Indiana a couple times.
- 29:55SPEAKER_00: I saw it over the weekend where he disappears.
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: And if he's going to follow in this Mount Rushmore of duck quarterbacks, you have to crush in when it matters.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: I mean, you look at Bo Knicks.
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: I never once thought Bo wouldn't get it done.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: The only reason we fell short with Bo Knicks is we ran out of time.
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: You know, like in his final game, we just ran out of time, you know.
- 30:19SPEAKER_00: And in those types of situations, you have full trust in these people.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: And Mariota, you have full trust, and Herbert, full trust.
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: I just want to stay there with him.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: It's just for all the hype and all the NIL money and everything that they're doing for this guy.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: I just want it to work so bad.
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: So uh here's to hoping on that front.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: And Friday night, Marcus will be out there.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: What are you guys making anything special?
- 30:44SPEAKER_00: I know that you can't really make an egg McMarkin.
- 30:46SPEAKER_01: Um this is gonna be a real I'm mailing it in, Drew, because uh we've got the band has the concert the next night.
- 30:54SPEAKER_01: My band LimeWire Summer is playing at the cooler on Saturday night after the state game on Friday night.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: So we are going to have a grip of I think Costco pizzas because they feed a ton of people.
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: They're really good for 10 bucks.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: And uh so we're gonna we're gonna just get a bunch of pizzas and I'm gonna be out making friends in the tailgate community, Drew.
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna be out passing out handbill flyers like I used to do in college, something that somebody's probably not been handed for a decade plus.
- 31:23SPEAKER_01: So I need to kind of mail in the food on the tailgate a little bit, this one, but I will be out partying with the people, making friends and trying to promote our show.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and with a 730 kick, that's gonna be a late evening.
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: So you've got a you had a double whammy there.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: You got a late football game into a concert the next night, which for people who don't know, the cooler is a heritage duck bar right there off of MLK, right down the street, um, right from the stadium, owned by a buddy of ours, run by another friend of ours, and starring Marcus on Saturday night.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: It's it's gonna be a ton of fun.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: And if you're looking for something cool to do, that's a perfect way to round out your weekend.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: Uh, and maybe you'll see him handing out flyers and slices of Zah.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: Uh, I will say that$10 Costco pizza, best bang for your buck you're gonna find anywhere.
- 32:15SPEAKER_00: I'm not gonna claim it's the best pizza you will ever have, but for$10, there is not a better pizza in America.
- 32:22SPEAKER_00: Uh, I mean, the only place you could even rival the price would be a Papa Murphs, and don't take and bake me right now.
- 32:29SPEAKER_01: I mean, uh I mean, how expensive are pizzas gonna get before we all join hands across America, Drew?
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: This is ridiculous.
- 32:36SPEAKER_01: Like it's 30 bucks for a for a middling pie these days, and I I agree with you 100%.
- 32:41SPEAKER_01: The Costco's not the best thing I've ever tasted, but I don't have to take out a second mortgage or get a HELOC just to afford one.
- 32:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because if we get two pizzas at my house, you're talking about like 70 bucks.
- 32:54SPEAKER_00: 70 dollars for pe for br for dough and cheese?
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: Are you serious right now?
- 33:01SPEAKER_00: That a high schooler made?
- 33:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 33:04SPEAKER_00: Some baked kid in the back just made that half-ass with all my pepperoni slapped to one side, and you're doing that?
- 33:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:11SPEAKER_01: And it's this is coming from a guy that used to work at a U-bake pizza place when he was in high school, okay?
- 33:17SPEAKER_01: I know how much attention they pay, and it ain't enough to charge me 30 bucks for that pie.
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's absolutely brutal.
- 33:25SPEAKER_00: So I'm with you.
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: Get those Costco pies.
- 33:27SPEAKER_00: I mean, at my kid's birthday, I went and got a couple of Costco pies.
- 33:31SPEAKER_00: And I'm also the guy, and this blew up my face a little bit, Marcus.
- 33:35SPEAKER_00: I refuse to buy cheese pizza.
- 33:38SPEAKER_00: I buy pepperoni pizza, and you can pull the damn pepperonis off if you don't want them.
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: Like, but we're not going to buy dough and cheese.
- 33:47SPEAKER_00: I'm just not doing it.
- 33:48SPEAKER_00: So I bought two pepperonis and I'm like, oh well, these these girls can just pull the pepperoni off.
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: And there were multiple girls who were like, where's the cheese?
- 33:56SPEAKER_00: And I go, well, just pull the pepperonis off.
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: And they were throwing like legitimate like sit-in fits about it.
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: Like a couple of them did not eat pizza because of my decision.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: Dude, it's so funny because it's uh uh you've just uh really personified the way that a lot of vegetarians will act.
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: If you tell them to just tear the pepperoni off the top, they will have a sit-in fit.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: And I'll tell you, I just don't understand it, man.
- 34:23SPEAKER_00: I'll tell you that sweaty pepperoni, even when you turn it back to a cheese, it's a flavor saver and it'll keep you going.
- 34:30SPEAKER_00: I mean, don't get mad at me because I'm being economical, people.
- 34:35SPEAKER_00: Um, but next time, next birthday, I will get a cheese.
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: So you guys don't have a conniption fit about it, but they act the with the cheese pizza the way I acted when that fumble happened at the end of the duck game.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: That's how it goes.
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: We do have to honorable mention something though before we go.
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: Oregon State did not get the win uh over the weekend, but they did have another pretty good showing against a ranked team, um, which it looked like I think they had the lead in the third quarter before it kind of fell apart.
- 35:07SPEAKER_00: Also, that wide receiver kid of theirs is an absolute stud.
- 35:11SPEAKER_00: Um, Jesse Legree.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: This kid, when is he transferring to Oregon?
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: Dude, I don't know what's going on right now in the world of college football.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: Like we are in the upside down from Stranger Things right now, and it's hard.
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: You mentioned the the people uh that love it when the Ducks lose almost more than they love it when their team wins.
- 35:32SPEAKER_01: We are gonna eat it from those beaver fans all week long because that kid is playing his heart out right now, and we lost.
- 35:40SPEAKER_01: It's the it's the perfect storm for us to have to eat beaver talk all week long, and I'm so upset about it.
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: You know, and and the funny thing is like the older I get, I support the beavers at every turn when they're not playing the ducks.
- 35:52SPEAKER_00: And so those guys, like I've got one in particular, Scotty, you know who you are.
- 35:57SPEAKER_00: And this guy, he celebrates, he calls it Happy Duck Day, and it's the day every year that we realize how overrated we are, but he's been getting throttled and beaten with the duck's whip for the last 20 years, and so he just like finds almost like climaxing enjoyment out of our out of our just tears in the pond over here.
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: And so I don't love that.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: I wish there was a little bit more in-state camaraderie.
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: I know we need it in sport, and so I can't really push upstream on that, but come on, guys, we're supporting your team too.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: It's it makes me want to be like, all right, put them on the schedule, throttle it up.
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 36:39SPEAKER_00: It's just a lot.
- 36:40SPEAKER_01: Every time I unwrap a Reese's burrito, I'm thinking about the Beavers, and I feel like I'm I'm giving you a little bit of my time, my energy, my money there.
- 36:48SPEAKER_01: So, you know, just have a duck fart and and root for the ducks once, uh, is all I want to say to those people.
- 36:54SPEAKER_01: I know they're not gonna do it.
- 36:55SPEAKER_00: You know what I think of?
- 36:56SPEAKER_00: Uh, when you go up to the counter at like a 7-Eleven, I don't even know if they're there anymore, but they used to have that big jar of hot mamas.
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: They were like a big sausage in red water.
- 37:06SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 37:06SPEAKER_00: And to me, that's what each and every one of them represent when they're acting like that.
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: Just being a bit of a hot mama right now.
- 37:14SPEAKER_00: And if you could just calm down.
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: Uh, but the ducks, you know, I'm gonna take it on the chin.
- 37:18SPEAKER_00: I have a good buddy uh who I do some work with who was he was texting me yesterday.
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: You could feel his smile across his face, and he was just like soaking in all of our hurt and anguish, and and that's fine.
- 37:33SPEAKER_00: We will have to earn it back.
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: We got to earn it back starting with Portland State, and then we're gonna have to go beat like five-ranked teams before this matters again.
- 37:41SPEAKER_00: Um, but I will just say this to those Beaver fans: I think there's a lot of hope and a lot of promise there.
- 37:46SPEAKER_00: You're still 0-2, so just uh pump the brakes on trying to kick a dude down a hill when you're laying at the bottom of the moat.
- 37:54SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 37:55SPEAKER_00: So there's that.
- 37:57SPEAKER_01: How's the view down there, though?
- 37:58SPEAKER_01: Because we might need to we might need to check out some real estate if things keep going this way.
- 38:02SPEAKER_00: So But what we're walking around in, we're gonna have swamp foot.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: That's what's gonna happen.
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: Uh, but all jokes aside, uh, I do hope the Beavers can piece together some wins and make a run in the Pac-12.
- 38:14SPEAKER_00: And I'm hoping in the Big Ten, the Ducks can write the ship and do something.
- 38:18SPEAKER_00: Dan Lanning's got plenty of fuel there, stuff to work on, but get your motivational speeches ready.
- 38:25SPEAKER_00: You may have to uh start sacrificing something there in the locker room.
- 38:30SPEAKER_00: Something's gotta give.
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: Marcus and I will be back again uh a little later in the week.
- 38:36SPEAKER_00: Remember Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, new episodes.
- 38:38SPEAKER_00: Subscribe to the show so it can be there for you always.
- 38:41SPEAKER_00: And check us out on YouTube where you can see the tears actually rolling down our faces as we talk about the duck season.
- 38:48SPEAKER_00: But it's not over yet, baby.
- 38:49SPEAKER_00: As Dan Lanning says, everything that we hope for is still in front of us.
- 38:54SPEAKER_00: Have a great day, Marcus.
- 38:55SPEAKER_00: Thanks, bud.
