- 0:14ask the experts. Joined this morning by Andrew Larson. Andrew comes to us
- 0:18from Larsen Home Services. The website Larson L A R. S O.
- 0:23N. Home Services dot com. That's Larsenhomeservices dot com. The telephone number
- 0:27six oh eight five three five forty three forty three. That's five three,
- 0:31five forty three forty three. And I know this week, generally for folks,
- 0:35makes a lot of sense to take vacation because it's generally a pretty quiet
- 0:40week, especially in the industry as far as uh roof repair and other things,
- 0:45because it's mostly all scheduled people. You know, You've got your guys
- 0:48out working, Andrew, and they are on the schedule and everything's good,
- 0:52and then out of the blue, we get a nasty, nasty storm tornado
- 0:55as a matter of fact, rolling through mid February, and that just kind
- 0:58of kind of gets your guys out there. How you doing this morning,
- 1:00Andrew, I'm doing fantastic. I heard you guys are supposed to get snow
- 1:04back home. That's why I left. Yes, yes, we are a
- 1:08chance for snow and a little bit of everything for sure. Real quick,
- 1:14I want to ask you about just about the right up the road from my
- 1:19house to matter of fact, there are a couple of homes that literally lost
- 1:23their parts of their roof and and pretty devastating obviously entire roofs. That that's
- 1:30a big, big project. I know. Obviously if that happens, there's
- 1:34definitely houses adjacent to that area that have damage to their roof. Maybe not
- 1:38all that evident, but definitely something to be inspected. Let's talk real quick
- 1:42just about what you're able to do at LUR Storm Services and why it's important.
- 1:46I know there's crews that travel around the country that'll knock on doors and
- 1:49other things. It's important to make sure you know who's doing that work,
- 1:53isn't it It is? It is. You know, there's a lot of
- 1:57companies out there that'll move into town after we get a big storm and start
- 2:02knocking doors and get some work done. And I'm not here to say that
- 2:05they're all bad, because that's definitely not the case. But I will say
- 2:08that when we typically hear about a storm restoration project going going sideways, it's
- 2:15from somebody not local because they came into town got a bunch of work,
- 2:16got a bunch of work done. And after the work is done, they
- 2:20leave. And if there's problems or stuff wasn't done up to code, like,
- 2:23they just don't care because they're not from around here. They leave,
- 2:28they change their name, and they're out. We have storm damage experts all
- 2:34over the state. I mean, I think I put a little message out
- 2:38on social media last week. I mean offices in Lacrosse, Madison, Milwaukee,
- 2:43Green Bay, Appleton, wastaf Stevens Point and experts in all of those
- 2:49offices that know how to handle this stuff. So we're pretty much local anywhere
- 2:52that you are in the entire state. And you know, one of the
- 2:55approaches that we take to what we do is, you know, there's a
- 2:59lot of storm roofers out there or people just doing roofs in general, that
- 3:04want to put a shingle on cheapest way they can looks great. The problem
- 3:08is is that when storm these storms bere becoming more frequent, right severe weather
- 3:14pattern, weather patterns of changing, kind of the storm belt is moving north
- 3:19a little bit. It used to be like Colorado to Kansas City up into
- 3:23Iowa, and it's kind of starting to move further north, and insurance companies
- 3:27are getting smart to that as well. And I've got some inside inside info
- 3:31on insurance work and agents are straight up that more and more homeowners insurance companies
- 3:38are just pulling out of Wisconsin and Minnesota because they've been they've been undersold for
- 3:44so many years, meaning relatively cheap homeowners insurance. Where we live. Most
- 3:47people are paying twelve hundred dollars a year if you think about that, So
- 3:53you've been paying that for ten to fifteen years, and you get a storm
- 3:57and you got to put a twenty thirty thousand dollars roof on, all the
- 4:00money's wiped out. So they're raising rates, they're pulling out of the state.
- 4:04A lot of different things are happening. So one approach that we take
- 4:08is we take a lot of pride in trying to sell class fur impact rated
- 4:14shingles. We want shingles that if a storm comes through with hail, they're
- 4:19not gonna get damaged. You're not gonna have to worry about it. They're
- 4:23actually made to take the impact of hail and high winds. Now, you
- 4:29have an F two or an F three tornado roll down your road like hey,
- 4:31that's a whole different story. But with the hail that's associated with it,
- 4:35the f wave shingle. I mean, I've laid that thing down on
- 4:41carpet and I've smashed it with a hammer, did nothing to it. I've
- 4:45laid our Class four impact rated armor shield shingles down on carpet, smashed them
- 4:48with a hammer, nothing happened to them. They have a rubberized membrane in
- 4:53them that allows them to flex. So that's what happens when that hail hits
- 4:56a normal shingle is if smashes down on it, there's give to the roof
- 5:00and it actually breaks the matting and then all the granules start to fall off.
- 5:03Now all we have is fiberglass matting and eventually they start to leak.
- 5:08But with Class four impact rated shingles, yes they cost more, but if
- 5:12the storm comes through, most likely not going to have anything to worry about.
- 5:15And that's peace of mind for you, because I can tell you this
- 5:19talking to people over an Economo walk. They had a big hailstorm go through
- 5:24last year. A whole bunch of roofs got replaced. Great, there might
- 5:28have been some happy people they got new roofs. Maybe they needed one.
- 5:30Guess what they just had hal go through again. You know how excited they
- 5:33are now, not excited because deductibles are going to go up. People are
- 5:39going to start getting dropped by their insurance company. Now they have to go
- 5:42through the whole headache and mess getting a new roof all over again. Now,
- 5:46if they had impacts impact rated shingles, that's something that they're not going
- 5:48to have to worry about. You know, the best way to deal with
- 5:53an insurance company is to never have to deal with them. And that is
- 5:55the honest to goodness truth. Whether it's your car insurance, your health insurance,
- 5:59your homeowner's insurance, if you never have to deal with those people,
- 6:02life is good. And unfortunately things happen. The great thing is you mentioned
- 6:06the F wave F wave shingles, and I've seen I've seen samples of them,
- 6:12and you know, we've talked about them in the past. They look
- 6:14beautiful. You mentioned all the great features to them. Just imagine never having
- 6:17to worry about about storms and hail and you know, having those things and
- 6:23never render to worry about calling and dealing with an insurance adjuster or anything like
- 6:26that. I know you guys do work for homeowners that do have damage,
- 6:30and you guys work very closely with the insurance companies to make sure that homeowners
- 6:33are getting every benefit that they've that they've paid for and making sure that things
- 6:38are being done right. It's important though, as we as we're kind of
- 6:42recovering from some bizarre storms, whether it's hail, whether it's wind damage,
- 6:46other things, that you're having your roof inspector. And let's talk about how
- 6:49that works with Larson Home Services. You know, we mentioned people going door
- 6:54to door. People will change states, change names, those kind of things,
- 6:57and they're really hard to track down. One of the things I always
- 7:00loved about talking with you, Andrew, is the company name. It's Larson
- 7:03Home Services. It's your name. You are a guy here in Wisconsin.
- 7:08Folks know you, people know your family, know your name, know exactly
- 7:12all about you. You are committed to this area. When it comes to
- 7:15having your house checked out inspected for storm damage. You want something like that,
- 7:19and let's talk about how how Lars Storme Services does those home inspections for
- 7:24folks. Here's the thing. You're exactly right, you know, I was
- 7:28born and raised in Wisconsin. I grew up at or further north, but
- 7:31moved to Madison area about fifteen years ago to start the company and I've been
- 7:35here ever since. My family lives in Lodi, My kids go to school
- 7:39in Lodi, Like this is where we are, and we put and eventually
- 7:44put my name on the company. So it's very very important to us.
- 7:46And when we do a roof inspection, we take a roof inspection very seriously.
- 7:49First of all, we're not doing roof inspections looking for hale because we're
- 7:53not a storm company. Yes, we know how to look for hale.
- 7:56It's typically pretty easy to find. But when we we do a roof inspection,
- 8:00we have a sixteen point roof inspection and there's sixteen different areas that we're
- 8:05looking for. And we're looking at ridge caps, we're looking at a ridge
- 8:07event, We're looking at softa ventilation, We're looking at the granular breakdown of
- 8:11the shingle. Are we starting to lose a lot of granules? I mean
- 8:16sometimes roofs don't have to be that old and they get baked, they start
- 8:18to lose granules. Once that starts happening, it doesn't stop, and your
- 8:22roof is going to prematurely be ready to be replaced. We're checking around chimneys,
- 8:26we're checking around skylight, we're checking flashing. So we're going through the
- 8:31roof with a fine tooth comb. We're using we're using microscopes, we're using
- 8:37moisture meters, we use a whole bunch of different tools and data to let
- 8:43a homeowner no. Now, Honestly, most of the time when we do
- 8:45a roof inspection, it's just free. When we're doing maybe we're doing a
- 8:48gutter estimate, we're doing a gutter estment. We're doing a roof inspection every
- 8:50single time, and most of the time the roof is good. Most of
- 8:54the time it is. But sometimes there are key areas. I cannot tell
- 8:58you how many times we go on a roof and it's five years old and
- 9:03it's leaking, and there's just so many roofers out there that are going to
- 9:07want to come out and say, hey, yeah, it's leaking, we
- 9:09need to replace. That's just bas the case. It's always typically one of
- 9:13those key areas because if the shingles are in great shape it's leaking, that
- 9:20just means that some of the member I always talk about the most important stuff,
- 9:22it's underneath you see the stuff you don't see. We can usually fix
- 9:28that stuff. Now, if you've had a roof over, meaning you've got
- 9:30a one or two layers of shingles and you put new shingles over it,
- 9:33and your roof is five years old and it's breaking, sorry, there's nothing
- 9:35we can do. That all needs to come off and it needs to be
- 9:37done properly. But nine times out of ten that's not the case. It's
- 9:41just flashings that weren't done properly. People having skylights on the roof, and
- 9:45I'm not replacing the skylights. Those are key late leak areas. Why with
- 9:50us, if you've got skylights and you need a new roof, you have
- 9:52to replace the skylights. And honestly, sometimes we lose jobs because of that
- 9:56because it's expensive work to do the skylights. But it's just a standard that
- 10:01we have because I know that if we don't replace them, they're gonna leak.
- 10:05Ask me how I know, because we used to do it without replacing
- 10:07them and end up leaking. And you know, you can tell somebody,
- 10:11hey, we're not gonna cover your skylight if they leak. But that's a
- 10:15really sickening feeling when you get a call in the middle of the night during
- 10:18a storm and someone's skylights are leak, it's a very helpless feeling. So
- 10:22that's just something we have to do. So sixteen point inspection, checking all
- 10:26the key areas and the actual makeup of the shingles, we can give a
- 10:30home owner a really good idea of how those shingles are doing. Also,
- 10:33if you've had a storm, we're gonna come and we're gonna lift shingles to
- 10:35make sure you didn't have a whole bunch of seal failure. Once those seals
- 10:41pussed up from a hot, strong wind like a tornado or a straight line,
- 10:43they're not gonna steal back down. And typically they've folded over, which
- 10:48means they've creased and they've broke, which is almost the same thing as a
- 10:50hail damage because where that shingle creased or it broke, now all the granules
- 10:56are gonna start falling off right there and it's never gonna steal down again.
- 10:58That's the type of situation where, uh, you're gonna need a you're gonna
- 11:03need a roof replacement. So whether it's storm damage or it's just regular inspection,
- 11:07we take it very seriously. It's an important day to have that conversation.
- 11:13And of course, let the folks from our storm services take a look
- 11:15at your house again. Roof inspection, gutter inspection. Uh. We could
- 11:18do an entire show on flashing, by the way, I could. That
- 11:22was what I talk about, how impressed I was with the work that you
- 11:26guys did on the Preble household. The one one of the areas that that
- 11:28again is thanks to talking with you over the years, I've learned to appreciate
- 11:33is we've got on our house, the front of our house, We've got
- 11:35a very large three flu chimney on the front of the house brick, and
- 11:41all of a sudden I noticed, And it wasn't until you had said about
- 11:45flashing. I looked up there. I said, look at that that flash
- 11:48like it's it's into the It's actually like again, we could do a whole
- 11:52show on it. It's the back. Yeah. I can't tell you how
- 11:56many times we get up there and we see shame those that are in phenomenal
- 12:01shape. And then we get where we closely inspect the chimney and all the
- 12:05flashing that's on the chimney. It's literally just for looks like it just goes
- 12:09up the chimney and then someone's just cocked it to the chimney. Well,
- 12:13I can tell you that that will not last. No. And if somebody
- 12:18can imagine a piece of metal going up the side of a chimney six to
- 12:22eight inches and it's just cock. Now that cocking starts to break loose because
- 12:26it's a very uneven surface, whether it's brick or it's stone. And all
- 12:31that water that hits the chimney now it's rolling right down the chimney. The
- 12:35only thing stopping it from going behind that flashing and right under your shingles,
- 12:39right down into the roof, into the attic. It is a piece of
- 12:43calking that's stuck to brick or stone. It's not going to work. No,
- 12:50those are the details, some of the little things. That's other cool
- 12:54thing too is when you work with the team at Largstone Services. I love
- 12:58it because they educate you on on exactly what makes a good roof good and
- 13:03what makes the best roofs the best, and they want to do that for
