- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday, it's the 18th of
- 0:17December. And thank you for tapping on
- 0:19play. Thanks for inviting me into the
- 0:21busyness of your day because this is an important reading.
- 0:26I don't know about you, but I have had periods of my life
- 0:29where there has been prolonged challenge and suffering.
- 0:34And in times like that, we call that to God, right?
- 0:36And we just wonder why the suffering doesn't end.
- 0:40And Daniel Chapter 11 really zooms in on that experience.
- 0:44And we're going to hear about ruler after ruler after ruler.
- 0:48And it's going to sound a little bit repetitive and cyclical as
- 0:51rulers continue to oppress and people continue to be oppressed.
- 0:56And it's not going to shy away from the challenge of oppression
- 0:59or the suffering caused by that, but instead, it's going to shine
- 1:03a light on the way that people are refined and faith continues
- 1:07through the suffering. And so it is a call, a call out
- 1:11to you and to me, that when we go through these hard times,
- 1:16just stand firm in our faith because suffering and challenge
- 1:21really does draw out our faith and allow it to mature.
- 1:25And so that is the journey that we're going to be taking on
- 1:27today as we read together Daniel Chapter 11.
- 1:42I've been standing beside Michael to support and
- 1:44strengthen him since the first year of the reign of Darius the
- 1:48Mead. Now then, I will reveal the
- 1:51truth to you. Three more Persian kings will
- 1:55reign, to be succeeded by 4th. Far richer than the others, he
- 1:59will use his wealth to stir up everyone to fight against the
- 2:03Kingdom of Greece. Then a mighty king will rise to
- 2:07power, who will rule with great authority and accomplish
- 2:11everything he sets out to do. But at the height of his power,
- 2:15his Kingdom will be broken apart and divided into 4 parts.
- 2:19It will not be ruled by the King's descendants, nor will the
- 2:22Kingdom hold the authority it once had.
- 2:25For his empire will be uprooted and given to others.
- 2:30The King of the South will increase in power, but one of
- 2:33his own officials will become more powerful than he and will
- 2:37rule his Kingdom with great strength.
- 2:40Some years later, an alliance will be formed between the King
- 2:43of the North and the King of the South.
- 2:46The daughter of the King of the South will be given in marriage
- 2:49to the King of the North to secure the alliance, but she
- 2:52will lose her influence over him and so will her father.
- 2:57She will be abandoned along with her supporters, but when one of
- 3:00her relatives becomes King of the South, he will raise an army
- 3:04and enter the fortress of the King of the North and defeat
- 3:07him. When he returns to Egypt, he
- 3:10will carry back their idols with him, along with priceless
- 3:14articles of gold and silver. For some years afterward, he
- 3:18will leave the king of the North alone.
- 3:21Later, the King of the North will invade the realm of the
- 3:23King of the South, but will soon return to his own land.
- 3:27However, the sons of the King of the North will assemble a mighty
- 3:31army that will advance like a flood and carry the battle as
- 3:35far as the enemy's fortress. Then, in a rage, the King of the
- 3:40South will rally against the vast forces assembled by the
- 3:43King of the North and will defeat them.
- 3:46After the enemy army is swept away, the King of the South will
- 3:50be filled with pride and will execute many thousands of his
- 3:54enemies, but his success will be short lived.
- 3:58A few years later the King of the North will return with a
- 4:01fully equipped army far greater than before.
- 4:05At that time there will be a general uprising against the
- 4:08King of the South. Violent men among your own
- 4:11people will join them in fulfilment of this vision, but
- 4:15they will not succeed. Then the King of the North will
- 4:18come and lay siege to a fortified city and capture it.
- 4:22The best troops of the South will not be able to stand in the
- 4:25face of the onslaught. The King of the North will March
- 4:29onward unopposed. None will be able to stop him.
- 4:33He will pause in the glorious land of Israel, intent on
- 4:37destroying it. He will make plans to come with
- 4:40the might of his entire Kingdom and will form an alliance with
- 4:44the King of the South. He will give him a daughter in
- 4:47marriage in order to overthrow the Kingdom from within.
- 4:50But his plan will fail. After this he will turn his
- 4:54attention to the coastland and conquer many cities.
- 4:58But a commander from another land will put an end to his
- 5:01insolence and cause him to retreat in shame.
- 5:05He will take refuge in his own fortress, but will stumble and
- 5:09fall and be seen no more. His successor will send out a
- 5:14tax collector to maintain the royal splendour, but after a
- 5:18very brief reign he will die, though not from anger or in
- 5:22battle. The next to come to power will
- 5:24be a despicable man who is not in line for royal succession.
- 5:29He will slip in when least expected and take over the
- 5:33Kingdom by flattery and intrigue before him.
- 5:36Great armies will be swept away, including a covenant Prince with
- 5:42deceitful promises. He will make various alliances.
- 5:46He will become strong despite having only a handful of
- 5:49followers. Without warning, he will enter
- 5:52the richest areas of the land. Then he will distribute among
- 5:56his followers the plunder and wealth of the rich, something
- 6:00his predecessors had never done. He will plot the overthrow of
- 6:04strongholds, but this will last only for a short while.
- 6:08Then he will stir up his courage and raise a great army against
- 6:12the King of the South. The King of the South will go to
- 6:15battle with the mighty army, but to no avail, for there will be
- 6:19plots against him. His own household will cause his
- 6:23downfall, his army will be swept away, and many will be killed,
- 6:28seeking nothing but each other's harm.
- 6:31These kings will plot against each other at the conference
- 6:34table, attempting to deceive each other, but it will make no
- 6:37difference, for an end will come at the appointed time.
- 6:42The King of the North will then return home with great riches.
- 6:46On the way, he will set himself against the people of the Holy
- 6:49Covenant, doing much damage before continuing his journey.
- 6:54Then at the appointed time, he will once again invade the
- 6:58South, but this time the result will be different, for warships
- 7:02from western coastlands will scare him off and he will
- 7:05withdraw and return home. But he will vent his anger
- 7:09against the people of the Holy Covenant and reward those who
- 7:13forsake the Covenant. His army will take over the
- 7:18temple fortress, pollute the sanctuary, put a stop to the
- 7:22daily sacrifices, and set up the sacrilegious object that causes
- 7:27desecration. He will flatter and win over
- 7:30those who have violated the covenant, but the people who
- 7:34know their God will be strong and will resist him.
- 7:40Wise leaders will give instruction to many, but these
- 7:43teachers will die by fire and sword, or they will be gaoled
- 7:47and robbed. During these persecutions little
- 7:51help will arrive, and many who join them will not be sincere,
- 7:56and some of the wise will fall victim to persecution.
- 8:00In this way they will be refined and cleansed and made pure until
- 8:06the time of the end, for the appointed time is still to come.
- 8:11The king will do as he pleases, exalting himself and claiming to
- 8:15be greater than every God, even blaspheming the God of gods.
- 8:20He will succeed, but only until the time of wrath is completed,
- 8:26for what has been determined will surely take place.
- 8:29He will have no respect for the gods of his ancestors, or for
- 8:33the God loved by women, or for any other God, for he will boast
- 8:37that he is greater than them all.
- 8:40Instead of these he will worship the God of fortresses, a God his
- 8:46ancestors never knew, and lavish on him gold, silver, precious
- 8:50stones, and expensive gifts. Claiming this foreign God's
- 8:54help, he will attack the strongest fortresses.
- 8:58He will honour those who submit him, appointing them to
- 9:01positions of authority and dividing the land among them as
- 9:04their reward. Then at the time of the end, the
- 9:08king of the South will attack the king of the North.
- 9:11The king of the North will storm out with Chariots, charioteers,
- 9:15and a vast Navy. He will invade various lands and
- 9:19sweep through them like a flood. He will enter the glorious land
- 9:23of Israel, and many nations will fall.
- 9:27But Moab, Edom and the best part of Amon will escape.
- 9:32He will conquer many countries, and even Egypt will not escape.
- 9:36He will gain control over the gold, silver and treasuries of
- 9:41Egypt, and the Libyans and Ethiopians will be his servants.
- 9:45But then news from the east and the north will alarm him, and he
- 9:49will set out in great anger to destroy and obliterate many.
- 9:54He will stop between the glorious holy mountain and the
- 9:57sea and will pitch his royal tents.
- 10:00But while he is there, his time will suddenly run out and no one
- 10:06will help him. Our Lord, what a dire chapter of
- 10:20these kings battling backwards and forwards and backwards and
- 10:23forwards and backwards and forwards in the cycle of
- 10:27unending violence and causing so much suffering to their nations
- 10:31and the nations around them. And thankfully, Lord, for most
- 10:34of us, that is not our reality. But we still have our share of
- 10:37suffering and we still have our share of tricky situations that
- 10:41just feel like they're not going to end and all these pressures
- 10:45on us that just get us down. But Lord, even though it seems
- 10:48hopeless in this reading, we know sneak peek to come that you
- 10:53will reign victorious. And then no matter what we have
- 10:56to face today, your love and what Jesus has won for us on the
- 11:01cross is far greater than any challenge will face.
- 11:05So we live in that hope that you offer.
- 11:08Even when there is all that challenge and negativity around
- 11:12us. We hold on to you, Jesus.
- 11:14We hold on to your hope. And we know that through these
- 11:18challenges, you will develop us and strengthen us and refine our
- 11:22faith in you using whatever circumstances the world delivers
- 11:27to us to your glory. So we just lift you up, our
- 11:30mighty, wonderful, kind, and loving and all powerful God.
- 11:35And pray all of this in the saving name of your Son Jesus.
- 11:39Amen.
